Tempe Arizona and Mountain America Stadium home to the Arizona State sundevils where Sparky and his gang have been sharpening those pitch fors in anticipation of this one there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West the Wyoming Cowboys taking on a team from the Big 12 the Arizona State sundevils for EA Sports College football ree Davis with you alongside David Pollock and Jesse Palmer and guys can't wait to get this one [Applause] started the Cowboys will get us started with the opening kickoff looks like he's going to try to return it really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the so Arizona State's offense takes the field for the first time today and this big Bella can beat you in a number of different ways in the passing game David yeah so much fun to have a guy that I can rely on that can beat guys over the middle of the field that can beat man-to-man coverage this guy is the Ultimate Weapon and I love that this guy has an awesome catch radius you don't have to be perfect as a quarterback when you throw to him he can make me look good when you run those drag routes it just takes a little bit of knowhow and when I say that reers understand find Space my quarterback's going to find me he's looking for that space at the same time nice throw nice catch way to get the first down with the first down they'll put it in play from the 33 just will his way for a couple out to the 35 and that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road picked up two yards on that last need eight on second down they'll keep it on the ground that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle [Music] there a third and long coming up here it's a draw he's one out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down it's a really good sign if you're on offense here you're putting it on your offensive line on third down critical down in distance opening drive of the game let those guys fire off get a hat on a hat you can run the ball pick up the first you're around Midfield and all things looking pretty good here early for this offense looking to go up top on first down that was an eyelash away from being picked off and that is not the way to set the tone with a near pick on your opening drive great coverage great break on the ball had a chance to really make a big play and maybe even take that thing back to the house but you got to secure the catch we like to hit people more than we like to catch balls keeping it on the ground with the running back and the defense snows him under after a very short gain if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum third and long and he'll try to throw for it got his man quickly and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up wow what a great job by that quarterback finding his receiver on third down you know guys one of the most telling stats at the end of the game is third down conversion percentage if you're a great third down team it's invaluable to your offensive success and that's why teams drill third down so much in practice takes a handoff it's scattero makes the tackle at the 23 yd line give him 10 yds and up the first down I think it's really important for this offense they get this guy going early in the game they're doing a nice job of that right now remember he's the kind of running back who gets better as the game goes on that's a really good omen for this offense considering his success now early leaves it with the running back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one listen I know there are a lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put his face in the fan get close to the line of scrimmage and tackle and on the opening drive he's out there he gets a huge tackle for loss early that is a statement Play It's been a defensive battle through the first period and the stats tell that tale let's see if the offenses can find a little rhythm as we start the second quarter they are controlling the ball ninth play of the drive on second down wants to throw it got his man to the left and he's brought down after a nice game oh boy this freshman quarterback has a host and he is seeing that thing in there they're running the curl route against Zone coverage the quarterback knows that's going to be a tight window he's got to rifle that ball into his wide receiver he does just that and as a result they pick up the first down the Sun Devils with the first in 10 they'll ride the running back and leave it with him pull down after picking up five to the 6yd line I like this guy as a running back because he can run between the tackles and he can also go outside he could really do it all going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down [Applause] he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions this is a tough one a third and long from this part of the field they can though pick up the first down trying play action they're trying to get to it oh CL intercepted in the end zone and what a Red Zone stop that would have been it'll be fourth down nice job by the defense they're mixing up their look they third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on the quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion they'll try to cap off this drive with a field goal from the right hash and this distance makes that angle not quite so severe between the uprights it's good and with that they break see on the scoring it's three nothing well this team knew coming into tonight's game they had to get momentum early playing at home they want to get the crowd into it so you get a beautiful drive here to start this thing you would have liked to cap it off with a touchdown but listen set yourself up for a field goal did not it through the uprights You' got the lead everything right now looking good after that last field goal Drive they're set to kick it away from inside the 10 yd line he'll bring it back didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the Cowboys offense will try to get something started with their first possession and these two electrifying Runners can put on a show guys we always talk about the importance of tackling on defense never more so than it came like this when you've got two studs in the back field that can make people look silly you better bring hats to the football yeah and you think there'll be a lot of carries today when when you got running backs like this that you can feature you're going to see them get the football a lot early and often didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 from the gun give on the inside picks his way ahead pick up of three and gets it to the 20 yd line we've reached the two-minute warning and we have ourselves a ball game and they have a chance to take the lead here before the half third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a dooy if they can pull it off dropping back it's faota throws to the back and they'll miss the connection here on third [Applause] [Applause] down and the Cowboys will call on their punt team he'll settle for some pretty good field position and make the fair catch at around the 35 Arizona state is going back on offense and they come out looking for a spark unloads to the right he makes a catch and he's brought down after a nice game well they're running the Cur rout against coverage so the quarterback knows he's going to have to put that one on his receiver and you saw the velocity and the arm Talent this guy has that was a missile here they come first and 10 from the 48 looking to move it through the air unloads it left and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down well the receiver was double covered on that play and I don't know if the decision by the QB had to do with the pressure because he was hurried he just had to get rid of that faster than he wanted to he's lucky he didn't come away with an interception there they'll try again on second down after the incompletion he's looking to throw and the pass is incomplete thanks to a big hit looked like the offense had a chance for a big play there but the running back just could not reel that ball in they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one he'll just keep slinging it another incompletion on third down ah what a great play by the defense listen that's why he plays defense yes I get it I get the jokes defensive guys can't catch real well but the offense they caught a Big Time Break right there that could have been disaster on their side of the field could have been a big turnover that led to points fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way and nobody able to field that punt as it rolls out of bounds Wyoming takes over the football and the cowboy offense on its way out he'll come out throwing on first down got his man in the middle well it's a nice job by the defender there closing the Gap with the wide receiver you're going to complete the hitch pass but he's able to run right up on him get him to the ground for a this offense has a second down play back to pass it's saota he's got his man there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer that's a bang bang play three-step slant they rep this over and over in practice so they can go out and execute it on game day like that trying to find his man on first down makes the grab building momentum picking up a chunk of yardage moving the chains out to the 34 here's a Timeout on the field tight game here late in the first half the Cowboys will snap it on First and 10 he's going to pass that's caught it's brown and he'll be marked down right there still short of the first down and these quarterbacks have to really trust their wide receivers that they're going to be disciplined and run to the right route when they're throwing that ball to that outside like that because those Corners are sitting there on the inside and the worst thing that could happen is to miss inside and that cornerback can go the other direction the quick out he's out of bounds but not before picking up enough for the first down drip drip drip the water droplets keep hitting the forehead the paper cuts keep accumulating and they keep moving the ball down the field David yeah and there's a skill to that I know it's not always the sexy route it's not what everybody wants but man when you take the defense gives you and you move the ball slowly down the field and your quarterback's making good decisions your offense can put up great numbers and now getting towards the Red Zone try to get some points the offense uses a timeout to stop the clock and they'll get a quick breather little bit more to go after that last completion they'll try to pick it up on second down feeling some heat and they got him for the [Applause] sack third at the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin and our halim up thanks guys looks like we've got a terrific atmosphere there in TP and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top with that said let's send it back to the guys at Mountain America Stadium and the sundevils will kick it off to start the second half and he takes this from inside the five really dis job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 he'll start this third quarter with a run knocked down after picking up five out to the 24 I I like it just frustrate the defense get that five to six yards make him onor the Run make them know that you're willing to run the football and run it effectively halfway there on first down it's second and five quarterback on the keeper he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three really really nice football play man I got to understand option football I got to play my responsibility make sure that I know what I'm doing look at the linebacker great job doing that staying patient getting to the quarterback making the big tackles they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here looking to throw it's faota it's complete on the right side and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker one of the things I love about this defense they just have such great awareness and they're always communicating they understood the down and distance they knew exactly what they needed to do to make the tackle to force the punt that is so well done and the Cowboys will send out the punt unit this will be the second time they've had to kick it [Applause] away he gets a block looking for Running Room he'll get it to the 43 yd line before he stopped Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making it way onto the field it has been a complete uphill struggle for both of these offenses Jesse it sure has at this point David someone's just going to have to step up and make a play someone's got to break a tackle and make an incredible catch and just some life to this offense whatever you can whatever it takes don't worry about looking pretty that's out the window we've already looked really really ugly we got to find something that works to put some points on the board and now on second down for this offense from the shotgun the hand off to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and there was no space nowhere to go that play went absolutely nowhere sometimes you just need a dude to show up make a play and he did sometimes you just need to block that dude and they didn't ball spotted right at Midfield as they try to convert third and short they'll try to get the first through the air gets it out fast putting together a real scoring threat here as they pick up the first down at the 36 he might have expected to see this DB up in his receivers kitchen instead nice little Zone and they pick up the first man offenses are getting so good Reese at seeing the holes in the zone knowing you're in zone knowing where to sit down how to make it an easy pitch and catch for the quarterback and that's what it was on third sh he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down a nice job by the defense there tackling the catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do time winding down in the quarter they come to the line hand off to the lone back gets enough for the first down but not sure they'll get another playoff here in the third quarter as the end of the quarter and Arizona state has the lead three quarters are in the books time becomes a factor both in trying to hold the lead or cut into it as we take a look at the [Music] steps not only is the scoreboard on their side but so too is time as we in the fourth they'll give it to him again runs through the tackle they'll rip off eight on that play it's second and two you got to give the coaching staff credit because they really do Focus all season long on situational football with the lead late in the game if we're on offense we're trying to stay in bounds we're trying to bleed the clock and after ripping off a really nice run that guy knew I've got to get down I cannot get pushed out of bounds cannot get t tackled out of bounds really really nice job smashes through didn't get much done on that run he'll fight his way out and maybe maybe pick up a yard boy there wasn't much room to wiggle for that running back there none at all great job by the defense get in the back field quickly closing up all the holes nowhere to run the pressure the intensity is palpable a huge play right here on Third and two Let It Go to The End Zone and it's caught touchdown sundevils man really nice job attacking the middle of the field you see those safeties men I want to split them he splits it right down the middle throws that post right on the numbers catches the ball in the end zone touchdown [Music] he'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point extends the lead to double figures at 10 that drive covered 57 yd for the touchdown and they finish it up with a 15 yd scoring toss lining up to cover for the kick after that touchdown drive on the move from inside is five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Wyoming has the football back and here comes the offense he Wast no time and comes out throwing and in a lowc scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just it's frustrating and you got to put that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful Palmer now use it against him yeah David I think for a play caller this is tough right it's like you have to have the perfect play on just to get a first down in these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play and it breaks this trend he's got his man that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk explosive plays the defense finally able to make the Stop and a big key on that throw to the slot receiver guys is putting the ball out in front the location of the throw is what helped that guy get extra yards after the catch the Cowboys are in the hurry up to the air on first down unloads to the wide out he's got it he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down and there's no quit in this team obviously they're trailing late in the game but they're trying to make it happen we've seen two big plays now back to back they're putting pressure on this defense and the Cowboys will snap it on First and 10 back to the air one more time fires to the big fella they make the stop right there good pick up still short of the first down coming into this one I thought this guy was going to be a monster he was going to put up huge numbers we know this is a big part of the offense week in week out their defense has done a great job clamping down on him that is only his second catch so far in this game we reached the two-minute warning and we see miracles in college football all of the time and they could use one here the Cowboys have moved it inside the 20 back to throw it's saota gets it out quickly gets out of bounds after the big game but they've got it first and goal hey you know the defense here in this situation with a huge lead they've got to anticipate that this offense is going to be trying to throw the ball to the sideline so they've got to work different coverages to try to force the quarterback to go over the middle of the field with the football and the Cowboys trying to pay off the threat on first and goal unleashes to the end zone and the pass hits picked off and he's brought down to this defense gets the ball back for own that should be the nail on the cin what a great break on the football getting the big turnover you got the lead now just go out there be smart on offense and run that [Music] clock linebackers shuffling around trying to keep the quarterback from getting a read give is they work on that clock timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible that's got to be demoralizing if you're the defense you're trailing you need to get the ball back you got to get off the field but you can't stop the run when they're going between the tackles this defense is going to have to get a lot more physical especially in the middle he is going nowhere stop at the line of scrimmage defense uses a timeout quick trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense You' got a third and manageable backed up in your own end but convert here and you get some momentum power football with the run and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense the sundevils will punt it away on fourth down this will be second time they've had to kick it away playing the field position game as he makes the fair catch right at the 50 line gets set first down they're going to open this drive with a pass the throw to the outside is complete stopped after making the catch well you can tell those two have been practicing the out route all off seon long they looked like they could have completed that in their sleep they'll try to kick it into overdrive clock's running second down [Applause] coming dropping back it's saot fires to the middle holds it in knocked down at the 29 yd line picked up 15 yds on the play and he's got a first down the defense has their hands full trying to stop this guy in the slot they're going to have to figure something out to bracket him try and get two bodies around and maybe get some safety help as well because right now they do not have the answer for this guy he'll spike the ball to try to save every precious second he [Applause] can now on second down he's looking to throw makes the grab outside it's brown and he'll run across the sidelines after the good game it's so nice as a quarterback but you've got a guy like that working for you in the slot he has such a good field to find the Open Spaces in the defense just makes life so much easier for his quarterback here they come up to the 23 yd line not thinking field goal wanting to convert this third and short they get him down with this offens is set up first and goal from the nine really nice job there at the quarterback reading coverage he knew exactly where to go with the football and at what exact time the timing could not have been better they get the completion on third down setting up first and goal sprinting to the line to try to get this one off clock's running and they'll spike the ball to try to save as much time as they can defense roll up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming to the air it's faota makes the catch he's all the way down to the two yd line just spectacular execution there had a nice job working the middle of the field I think it's so important to keep defenses honest and you can't just Dink and dunk outside you got to work the middle great job finding this wide receiver over the middle of the feet [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
