Antonio Pierce Made THE WORST 4th Down Decision in NFL History | Las Vegas Raiders Reaction Video

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce on the decision to punt fourth and one the fourth quarter seven minutes to go down six ladies and gentlemen in this video today I'll be breaking that call down why it was wrong the problem with coaches like Antonio piers and what needs to happen moving forward for Las Vegas Raiders let's take a listen to Antonio trying to defend the indefensible this is from the a I mean this is from the actual Las Vegas Raiders YouTube channel this this press conference are the reporters across the street what what's going on do they are they screaming are they 100 yards away screaming in the wind is having to carry these questions to Antonio Pierce do they don't have a microphone are there aluminum cans with strings on them attached 100 yards away and these poor reporters I mean they might as well have wrote a letter and Antonio Pierce might as well read the letter silently to himself and then answer the question Jesus let me see if I can find a better video all right this is from Vegas sports today uh this seems to be a little better audio let's roll Antonio down six at the Plus 43 one yard to go on fourth down it felt like you at least thought about it for a second and then R the punt team what what kind of went behind that yeah just I mean field position you know defensively punter I mean we got what we wanted we got him backed up we got three timeouts there play good football get the ball back you know half court as we call it offense Midfield hopefully but um they broke off a long run and that was the end of it so the decision in case you're not familiar with the situation right Raiders have the ball they are down six seven minutes left is fourth and one from the four uh 43 okay in no world do you punt this ball it it would be better to kick a field goal here than punting this ball punting this ball and we we have analytics pulled up to defend this and kind of show the extent of it but it doesn't get worse than this from a decision standpoint to me and I've said this before in the past with other coaches like Nathaniel Hackett or M McCarthy if you get this wrong as a head coach I think this is a firable offense you cannot be the one making these decisions below a decision like this and hold on to your job as far as I see it Antonio Pierce's whole thing is that he's a culture guy his team loves him his team plays physical you know he's tough the team is tough the Raider culture that's fine but none of that equals this if your team is tough if your team is physical if your team has Raider culture if if all of that is true if they love you if they'll run through a wall for you then you don't do something like this which is probably the most cowardice decision possible and it is on the surrender the punt surrender index as you will see this is a Hall of Fame nominee for cowardice uh decision and I don't mean and I'm not saying that you know that that is the term for it I the surrender index it rates it on a on a scale of basically um how coward how cowardice a decision is on fourth down or to punt so that's not my words but that's what it is and that kind of is what happens with coaches like this where you hear all the time the coaches that are The Vibes coaches the coaches that are uh you know the man managers and all of that can you imagine being a player on the Raiders and running through a wall for this guy and loving your coach and and you know buying into the culture and and working hard all week and all the other stuff that we hear all the time you know the Rah R speeches and and and whatnot and then all your hard work all of that is just tossed away because of a decision by a guy who is hired to make these decisions but he is the one he's the only one in the entire Stadium who who knows that that you know that doesn't know this is the wrong decision I don't get it and and that's been a lot of the defense of Pierce after this is that you know the Raiders will be okay because they love their coach that's fine but there's a big difference between being really really good at locker room speeches and being really really good at being a football coach this is something else that I don't get this is the NFL these are billion dooll franchises these are some of the biggest franchises in the world hire someone to do it I said this exact same thing I have a video on the channel about Dan Campbell and decisions he made in this almost the same situation and the Lions IM immediately made a change did they fire Dan Campbell no because he was such a good man manager and that's what he does absolutely this team loves him the team runs with the wall all that stuff they went and hired a team of analytics analytic Pros data scientists probability experts and they handle these decisions they present the decisions to Dan Campbell in real time just like an offensive coordinator would present something to Dan Campbell they they buzz it in Campbell he gets the numbers and he makes the decision that's it that's how you fix it imagine if you're playing Blackjack okay and you're playing Blackjack and a guy at the table or a girl at the table is hitting on six on 16 when the dealer showing a four I don't care how good or how funny that person is I don't care about the Vibes that person is bringing the table I care that they are losing me money I care that their decisions are so bad that they're losing me money if you're in a car with somebody and they're running over mailboxes and they're getting into car accidents and they're making bad decisions at red lights and they don't know what's going on they're blowing through they're blowing through stop signs and they're making bad decisions at every point but they have a really good playlist it's fun they're fun to ride around with would you let them drive you to the airport hell no hell no right you get someone who can make those decisions it's that easy let's get back to Antonio Pierce defending this two long runs um that the defense gave up uh you know the defense played good but you know two spots right there where where they didn't play necessarily great um that run game stopping the Run game you've talked about it didn't happen when it needed the hell was that was that a damn giraffe okay so he he answers this run question they get back to question about the fourth and one so we're going to skip ahead to that like camer to guys get ready to head was something with the game management about the same question I just got asked yeah I just saying like were you like consider maybe yeah no we consider going for it as a long one I mean got stopped earlier in the game momentum punter had done a good job you know pining those guys back I think we had two or three point I think three points inside the 20 um again you know defense was the strength for the most part of the game keep them back up with three timeouts so this is the dinosaur mentality is what this is It's a dinosaur mentality of you know defense defense strength of the team momentum all this stuff you hear you hear the same thing over and over again the reason I'm really bringing this up one is because a ton of Raiders fans watch the channel so I I throw in them a bone helping them out here providing some content the king of content for two teams simultaneously in the NFL Saints and the Raiders but also because I said this would happen in the off season I said I didn't think Antonio Pierce was a good coach and I had a lot of people in the comments saying Antonio Pierce is a good coach he should have been the head coach the team loves him he's a he's a Raider guy the culture and I explained that doesn't add up anymore this isn't 1975 where you get a raah ra coach he gets the team fired up and then the teams line up and then big man wins it's not how it is anymore that's not the NFL this is the NFL right now it's all out there so this is the fourth down decision bot this isn't the surrender index that I was talking about we'll look at that next this is from Ben Baldwin it's an automated bot that runs the anal uh the algorithm to determine your win percentage at a moment and then the win percentage per decisions all right so this one is that's situation down six fourth and one 43 yards from the opponent End Zone quarter 4 7:15 timeouts 3 and three okay go for it if you go for it your win percentage is 23% right the S the success percentage is your likelihood of converting it all right the field goal attempt as you can see this success is is making it you have a 66% chance of getting the first down the field goal attempt drops your win percentage from 23% to 14% all right so it's a 9% worse decision to kick a field goal then punt drops it another percent so the punt is just the decision to punt not Punt and then don't hold them not not Punt and down them at the one just the the second the decision to punt goes it drops it from a 20 2 3% win percentage to a 133 Antonio Pierce's decision I don't care about analytics I don't care about your defense doing this I don't care about the strength of your team I don't care about the punter putting them within the 203 times earlier in the game I don't care about any of that stuff the the second they sent the punter out there he cost the team 10% 10% win percentage that is huge again this isn't a a coin toss this isn't a well some coaches will do it here some coaches will do it there I can see it this way I can see it that way this is flat out wrong not to mention this is the first game of the season this isn't with the season on the line this isn't with the division on the line this isn't a playoff game not that Antonio Pierce would find himself in a playoff game but this isn't a playoff game this isn't with a trip to the Super Bowl in the line This is week one it's 16-10 neither offense can do nothing you're lucky to even be on the 43 and you say I think it's easier because this is what the decision really is he thinks it's easier for me to punt it stop them get the ball to have enough time to March down the field and score like do you see how crazy that is because at the end of the day he's trying to do the thing that he's already doing at the end of the day he's saying like I know we're already on the 43 but it's harder for our team to get one yard it's harder to do that I have less faith in that then I have more faith that we that we punt it down it return it or stop them return it and then score and then get a bunch of first downs and score with less time time with less resources because you'll probably use your timeouts it's flat out not knowing the situation and flat out not having the ability to make the decision let's go to the surrender index Las Vegas decided to punt from the Chargers 43 on fourth and one with 715 remaining in the fourth the surrender index of 131.76 this punt ranks as the 100th percentile of cowardly punts of the 2024 season which you know it's only the first game so it's not that big of a deal but it is the wor it's obviously the worst and the 99.9th percentile of all punts since 1999 to put that simply in 25 years this is one of if not the worst punt or decision to punt in 25 years this is a 0.1% percentile or 0.0 yeah 0.1% of of bad punts bad decisions and the craziest thing is is it's not like well he just made a little whoopsy Poopsy it's not he just made a little whoopsy Poopsy he told you this last year he told you this he told you this was going to happen last year Antonio Pierce said we're going to run the football we're going to punt on Fourth and short we're going to kick field goals we're going to rely on our defense and when I heard that I told all the Raiders fans I said that's not going to work can't do that you cannot win games or expect to win every game 13 to nine you can't go into it saying yeah we're going to play the field position game Run the football be tough and that's it you know who gives good speeches pregame speeches locker room speeches jamus Winston no one is asking him to be the starting quarterback because he's not great at decision- making if all it was was who's a good guy who do who do teammates like if that was it be a whole lot of different starters out there now think about what I just said about the defense of Antonio Pierce and what people always say about Anton Pearson coaches like this this is this is Tony Romo you know the Vibes coaches the team plays hard coaches we see them they're all the time we see this type of coach of the you know they play hard for him they love him you know he he's he's tough all that happens all the time let's hear what Tony Roma has to say about this this is after the decision let's see if Tony Romo mentions well he probably needs to be better at these analytical these spots a little game theory I wouldn't worry about the Raiders and Antonio Pierce is for real like I've played against him I've communicated with him a bunch you know since he took over last year and I think he's outstanding in almost each area you know that you want your head coach he well except decision making has the ability to communicate with the players at a very high level he has a standard that he sets that they follow that follow that they followed that standard and Antonio Pierce obviously is not holding himself to a high standard because one decision dropped them 10% in the win percent these players play as hard as any unit or any team that you'll see on tape week in week out last year you'll see that again today it Leafs out they had too many turnovers and I think that costed them when they were right in that position to kind of extend the lead and no right when they were in position to extend the lead or to take the lead Antonio pierce decid the punt to me there's a lot of positives there but they didn't get the W but they're much more exotic on defense than you think he knows how to hide guys I think they're going to have a really good year they're just in a very tough Division I mean the AFC West is ass by the way take the Chiefs out and it's the worst division of football you got the Chargers you got Andy Reid and the Chiefs Shawn pton a Young quarterback we'll see but the Raiders are are going to be fine they just going to have to win some of the close ones can't win you cannot win the close ones you cannot win the close ones with that kind of decision-making that's the problem that's the problem let me read this last tweet here Antonio Pierce uh we already saw that uh this is this is an interesting couple of paragraphs I was thinking today about this the weekly minutia within an NFL organization the hundreds of people working hour after hour to improve the team's chances to win this is a good point it's mindblowing that after all that one win in 14 half a win in the normal Raiders season can be tossed away with the decision of one man a decision that every other human in the stadium knows is wrong mindblowing 100% that's what I'm saying all this like the team loves them the team follows them the team works hard all the coaches all the assistant coaches everything it really does come down to this right here think about in the NFL now like the analytics that go into every team you think about how smart all these coaches are how smart the assistants are 20 years ago no one knew who assistant coaches were no one cared who is the I mean you who is the OC you know of some of the greatest teams in in uh the in the NFL's history if you go back further than about 10 years absolutely no clue now you know the OC and the DC of every coach in in the NFL Bobby slowick and Ben Johnson Bobby slowick and Ben Johnson are like heralded genius gurus and they're offensive coordinators that's where we're at with the NFL now I will say it again it is so easy for these NFL teams you know how we always see the quality control coaches who their job is to like hold the pants of the head coach when the head coach is running on the field instead of hiring those guys how about you hire a couple of guys from the the uh Resorts World Poker Room head on down to cir hire a couple of middling like average poker players and stick them up in the booth and let them run probabilities it's that easy hire a couple MIT grads on your analytics team it why not this is the NFL this isn't a high school they can hire whoever they want you how many coaches the NFL teams have you many random positions they have every single NFL team within the next five years we'll have it we'll have one of these teams it will be just like your offensive coordinator special teams coach it'll be just like that you'll have an analytics department or an analytics coach or a or a game theory manager or a situational coach and every team will have that coach and it'll be that coach's job to sit up in the booth and just straight up provide provide the numbers just uh 23% plus 10% go for it that's it uh minus 3% kick it that's their whole job will be it it will be so normal and in 5 years and no team is doing it some of the teams are lions are Ravens are they they have been public about hiring analytical experts so I feel bad for the Raiders fans because it's more of the same and it could have been prevented and it should have been seen coming but it is what it is so I don't know I I don't think Antonio Pierce unless unless they unless they do what I'm saying and go get someone to run the actual game theory and to help him out but if they don't do that I'd be absolutely stunned if he is the head coach at the end of the
