Arizona Diamondbacks VS Houston Astros MLB live PLAY BY PLAY scoreboard 9/8/24

see that curveball more than the slider from Verlander today because the Diamondbacks only have one hitter in their lineup who will bat right-handed against Verlander here's the 1-1 curveball again and that misses lowan in and it's two balls and a strike one thing about JV is jv's you're going to tell him what he's going to use you know he's very Adept at looking at a hitter and seeing what what they can and can't hit what's working for that day for him so he's always adjusting while he's out there that's what makes him so great the 2-1 and that's a ground ball foul at the F first base side that was a slider and it's a 2-2 count yeah he he reads swings probably about as well as anyone do yes he does that's what Hunter Brown's starting to do arti starting to do that when you start reading swings that means you're you're not you're going away from exactly what you know scotting reports and all that you're going to what works for you at that particular day bregman's backed up at third to2 and in the dirt with an off speed pitch Full Count now to Carol when I say get go away from Scout reports I don't mean go away from it totally obviously you have it but if you don't have the stuff to get it to where you you need to then you got to make adjustments and he's been great at that throughout his entire career Outfield shaded the other way against Carol here's the payoff pitch and that's lifted in the center field coming in a few steps McCormick he's there to make the catch and that is out number one on 86° outside at first pitch 73° indoors with the roof closed at minute made Park raldo Pomo will stand in switch hitting Short Stop batting from the left side one of two Switch Hitters in the lineup today for the Diamond Backs Pomo batting 279 347 on base percentage three homers 31 driven in first pitch as a strike on the outside corner Diamond Backs do not have catel Marte in the lineup today another switch hitter as he played the first two games of this series had been on the injured list activated on Friday an ankle injury so not in there today 01 and that is inside turns Pomo off the plate and this is the first time that the Diamondbacks have been able to play or have chosen to play a lot lot of their left-handed hitters because the Astros started two lefties the first two games Robert Valdez on Friday and US Kikuchi yesterday here's a one and that misses down and end with a slider it's two balls into strike it's a very left-handed possession player group for the Diamondbacks as it is berlander the kick and the 2-1 and there's a strike on the outside corner with a slider and it's two and two well it looks pretty sharp right now that wasn't a slider with that he was trying to get back foot it was where he wanted to thr throw was which was away Pomo ready and waiting from the left side Verlander with the two- two and that's hit off the hands and back into the screen eighth career start for Verlander against the Diamondbacks last saw them in his final start of the regular season last year in Arizona when he threw five scoreless innings and got the win 5- one with a 1.7 7 ra lifetime against Arizona for Justin Verlander here's a 2-2 curve ball grounded softly right side coming on the field at Altuve he's got it throws to First in time and there are two away that'll bring up Jack Peterson seeing his first action of the series left-handed hitting DH batting 280 400 on base percentage 21 homers 60 RBIs for Peterson nice pickup for the Diamondback signed a one-year deal after playing the last couple of years with San Francisco infield Shades him the pull bregman even with third and way off the line no score two out nobody on top of the first Verlander pitch and Peterson fouls it back into the screen yeah that's a good pickup it's a heck of a year not playing every day and basically they're left-handed hitting DH only plays against righties which is why we didn't see him the first two games here's the 01 and there's a strike at the knees Peterson thought it was low only he may have had a point it's nothing in two home played umpire today is Lance Barrett Jeremy rigs at first Mark rieter the second base umpire crew chief is the third base umpire that's Alonso Marquez as long as he doesn't have any pearls around his neck we're in good shape yeah got a enough of a glimpse of that during the 2021 World Series we do 02 that is just off the outside corner and it's one and two and Peterson played his first seven Big League Seasons with the Dodgers Astro saw him in the 2017 World Series also and he's bounced around since then Cubs Braves Giants now Arizona onew breaking ball and that hit the front foot of [Music] Peterson so Verlander yanking that one and Peterson reaches first base on the hit by pitch which you hate to see especially with two strikes yeah that curveball went a little bit um horizontal on him instead of usually goes straight down I got a little horizontal while I hit his front leg Yeah I thought I hit his foot it actually hit the the back of his front calf yeah here's Josh Bell switch hitting first baseman batting left first pitch and Bell hits this one out to right freezing in his tracks gamble now moves to his right and makes a two-handed grab to retire the side so Verlander Works around the two out hit by pitch and after a half inning Diamond Backs nothing Astros coming up you have a call from [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] he [Music] starts 143 Innings 148 hits 32 walks 121 strikeouts Le batting 267 against a 26-year-old from Henderson Nevada h Altuve will lead things off for the Astros six in the AL with a 300 average 355 on base percentage pitch on the way and Altuve hits it in the air foul and into the seats off to the right for strike one yeah he's got a good fast ball as you see right there it's 97 he's got a cutter slot a curve and change and of course the occasional sweeper which is a strikeout pitch on to a 19 Homer 59 RBIs needs one more Homer for his third career 2020 season oh one and Altuve hits it foul again off to the right almost identical and it's nothing in two w 98 Nelson has a good arm as you mentioned be better with the yellow spikes yeah those are those are canary yellow spikes that Nelson's featuring here's the O2 and Altuve fouls it over the screen that fast ball at 99 so each fast ball all three to Altuve to start this game for Nelson 97 98 and now 99 you know that Alum can handle that there's no doubt about that but he got his chances on these we could imagine there's going to be some sort of breaking ball here or fast ball up again Outfield straight away [Music] indeep Nelson the kick and the o02 swing and a miss elevated a fast ball at 98 above the Zone Al two8 down on strikes and there's one out yeah I I've never seen this kid pitch um that's pretty impressive right off the get-go now it's yordon Alvarez to the plate Alvarez fourth in the AL with a 313 average third with a 398 on base percentage seventh with 32 homers and 80 RB for yordon leads the team seven rbi's in this series for Alvarez first pitch and there's a strike on the outside corner nothing and one you're on five for nine over the first two games of this series six of his seven runs that he's driven in this series came in game one when he hit two three-run homers on Friday it's a nice night 01 and that's inside Alvarez moves backward on that 99 mph heater all fast ball so far from Ryan Nelson and it's one and one denouncing himself with presence first career start for Nelson against the Astros Astros saw him pitch one inning out of the bullpen in the last game of the season last year 1-1 and Alvarez hits it in the air down the left field line long run over there for Smith and he won't have a play it's into the seats foul ball and two strikes change up there from Nelson the first non-fast ball he's thrown comes on his seventh pitch interesting pitch right there cuz yordon as we all know is a real good change up [Music] hitter Nelson with the one-w and that's a ground ball hit softly past Nelson to left the short stop Pomo Fields it on the right side of second base and throws out yordon for the second out got in on Alvarez there'll bring up Kyle Tucker Astros designated hitter second game he's played since coming off the injured list activated on Friday and was the DH in that game one going 0 for two with a walk and a hit by pitch hasn't played the field yet since returning Joe spot is saying hopefully that'll happen happen here over the next week pitch on the way and that's fouled into the screen and that's catcher interference as Tucker's bat made contact with the mitt of Adrien del Castillo and Kyle Tucker will head to first base charge the error to the catcher Kyle's got on in some interesting ways here the last two games he's played has it well catcher's interference is uh that's part of his game that that is part of his game yeah I never learned that one I need I needed to learn that one last year Tucker reached on catches interference seven times which tied for the major league lead and tied in Astros record that ball was by him so Tucker at first here's bregman there's a strike nothing in one 97 on the fast ball to bregman third baseman hitting 259 315 on base percentage 21 homers 63 RBI starting for a second straight day didn't play Friday of course nursing that sore right elbow no score bottom of the first the one and bregman lines this down the right field side but that slices into the seats foul and it's nothing in two you don't see this very often the starting pitcher comes out and just pumping fast balls but when you got 97 to 99 I get you can do that um which gives advantage to the pitcher because if we haven't seen the other pitches that's what happens the next time around it's an 02 count to bregman pitch on the way and that bounces in there a Breaking Ball glov by Castillo on a hop one and two was talking to Brent strm of course former Astros pitching coach now the Diamondbacks pitching coach his third year over there was asking him about Nelson and the first thing he said to me is he is not scared and well he's shown it already yeah he's not one two swing and a miss breaking ball gets bregman he goes down on strikes and the side is retired Astro strand a runner and after one Astros is nothing Diamondback's nothing okay now everybody in I volunteer for the Third row this sacrifice is [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] she keeps a picture of me [Music] in on the grass at third first pitch curveball and that's popped up left field Alvarez moving toward the line but won't have a play as that's into the seats for strike one McCarthy batting at 294 361 on base percentage 8 homers 51 RBIs had two hits yesterday 01 and that's hit the other way down the left field line slicing will it stay Fair no foul by maybe a foot and it's nothing and two to McCarthy that would have been a double had that been maybe a foot to the right yeah that was close went out of my view a little bit third base umpire Alonso Marquez making the call and it definitely was foul looking at the replay so McCarthy takes his time gets back to the box has really come into his own offensively this year for Arizona it's always been a a good outfielder great speed really good athlete first round pick at University of Virginia back in 2018 selected by Arizona yeah that's a nice nice little year right there two- strike pitch and that is lined through the right side a base hit and Jake McCarthy is aboard to lead off the second and with speed as well it's 21 Steals on the year for McCarthy and 26 attempts first hit for the Diamondbacks and that'll bring up aino Suarez who hit a solo home run in yesterday's ball game his 25th home run of the Year batting 24 4 314 on base percentage seventh in the National League with 88 runs batted in a throw over to First and McCarthy back with a dive Suarez is interesting cuz you never you never know what you're going to get you know he can look real bad on three straight pitches and then go deep you know we've seen him enough when he was with Seattle be able to pitch to him at times but next thing you know he hits a three-run hmer so JV knows that you got to be careful with these type of guys pitch on the way and that's lined in the left field a base hit for Suarez McCarthy goes to Second back-to- back hits for the Diamond Backs to start off the second and they have Tan on with nobody out bring a paven Smith left-handed hitting left fielder getting his first start in this series he's hitting 247 in 43 games 320 on base percentage four homers and 18 RBI for Smith it's been up up and down between the Diamondbacks and their triaa affiliate in Reno this year bregman even with third rest of the infield back shaded slightly to pull against the left-handed hitter be interesting to see what he does here it's McCarthy at second Suarez at first pitch on the way and the fast Ball's a little high ball one both of the hits to start this inning coming on Fast balls from Verlander and last fast ball at 94 velocity is up a couple of ticks from where it was in his last start in Cincinnati the 1 oh and that's in the dirt with the change up two balls and no strikes herlander coming into this game with 260 career win he's been stuck on that number since May 24th 20 and that's it high in the air down the right field line ball is hooking if it stays Fair it's trouble and it is off the foul pole a three-run home run for pav and Smith that was a rain maker hitting high off that pole and it's three to nothing Arizona pav and Smith going deep for the fifth time this year another fast ball and another hit for the diamond bats probably fell behind the other day too so fast ball wound up being belt High Lo like judging for bir Diaz was set up wanted that down now it's Adrien del Castillo still nobody out pitch on the way and a swing in a Miss got a fast ball by Him Up and Away del Castillo hitting 273 in 21 games 342 on base percentage three homers and 14 runs batted in getting his first start in this series The 01 and there's a strike at the top of the zone and it's nothing in two to Dell Castillo who had his contract selected by Arizona a little over a month ago when Gabrielle Moreno went on the injured list out with a groin injury they hope to have him back in another week or two here's the 02 down and in with the slider a one ball two strike count you know it's it's tough for JV you know you you say well you know Yer wanted it down but JB's a high fast ball pitcher you know so it's it's tough for him to do that when he's had so much success throughout his great career pitching up in the strike zone here's the onew and that's lifted out in the center coming in on it McCormick waiting on it makes the one-handed grab and that is the first out of the inning second inning is brought to you by Dr Guy Lewis in the Texas Center for cosmetic dentistry visit love that smile.com or call 28136 smile three nothing Diamondbacks one out nobody on in the top of the second the batter is Luis goret left-handed hitting second baseman batting 212 306 on base percentage no homers nine runs batted in pitch on the way and that's in there for a strike Mariners won earlier this afternoon beating St Louis 10 to4 at bus Stadium as Mariners able to take that Series so the Astros currently have a five-game lead in the division 01 that bounces in there and it's a 1-1 count of course this being the Sunday Night Baseball game everything else has concluded so the Astros need a win to stay 5 and 1 half games up on Seattle which is where they were when play started this afternoon across Major League Baseball here's a 1-1 swinging a foul tip into the glove of Diaz 1 and two Astros with a magic number of 15 to clinch the division that's combination of Astros WI and Mariners losses that would give the Astros the AL West one two to guor and that smacked foul into the seats off to the left one and two still so you're saying we got we got some baseball to be played still 20 games remaining including tonight Astros have just three more series at home after this series concludes have the A's coming in after an off day tomorrow on Tuesday one two that is high and then the Astros last home stand of the year will start on the 19th against the angels and Mariners a six-game home stand in between these two home stands a six-game road trip to Anaheim and San Diego 22 and that's hit in the air shallow left side or shallow center field going out Peña coming in Mccormick Peña with the call and the two-handed grab and there are two away another elevated fast ball from Verlander and gets harmless contact from gor back to the top of the order in Corbin Carrol who flyed out to Center his first time 3 nothing Arizona top of the second bragman in on the grass at third pitch on the way spins outside ball one you know another thing to keep in mind too so mentioned just three more Home Series remaining the Astros in the season with three games in Cleveland and those games could wind up being consequential even if the Astros have the division clinched by then 10 curveball in there for a strike the two division winners with the top record in the league in the American League they get a buy to the division series don't have to play in the Wild Card round the division winner with the third best record does play in the Wild Card round 1-1 that's up and in two and one Guardians B deal yeah Guardians you know earlier today the the Guardians were able they lost their game to the Dodgers so they're 81- 62 the Astros are 77 and 65 right now 21 that's outside although the Yankees have kind of come back to the pack as well Yankees lost two to one to the Cubs today so the Yankees are now 82 and 61 but both the Yankees and Guardians have better records than the Astros do at top the division 3-1 to Carol and that's popped up Shallow Center going out Peña coming in McCormack McCormack will play this one and makes the one-handed grab to retire the side but three straight hits including a three-run home run by pav and Smith and after one and a half Diamondbacks three Astros nothing now this from your local station [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] exclusive experiences in merchandise help raise money for fight Childhood Cancer see the fullish of auction items at astros.com charity game Diamondbacks three nothing over the Astros bottom of the second Ryan Nelson facing Yer Diaz first pitch and the fast balls a strike on the inside corner nothing in one tell you what it looks hard for up here last fast ball at 96 and that's one of the softer ones yeah well straight over the top Diaz behind the plate for the Astros tonight the 01 swinging a Miss Tardy on the fast ball there Yer hitting 296 that's seventh in the AL 323 on base percentage 16 Homer 79 driven in ready for an 02 here it comes fast ball misses high and it's a one-w count you know The Scouting Report has him but his average fast ball is 95.1 I don't think he's seen 95 yet has he nope and maybe we'll see it diminish as the game progresses be nice here's a onew breaking ball outside two and two Nelson's been in the Diamondbacks rotation pretty much all year he does have two relief appearances but those were both uh both appearances when he followed an opener hasn't lost in his last 12 outings 22 swing and a foul that got a piece of the mask of del Castillo two and two still Nelson's last loss was back on June 26 did miss a couple of weeks in April with an elbow injury he doesn't walk guys either Diaz waiting for a 2-2 here it comes swing and a foul tip held on to by D Castillo and that is the third strike out for Nelson one away now it's Jeremy Peña Astro shortstop had a three-run homer yesterday hitting 270 310 on base percentage 15 Homer 68 runs batted in for Peña Nelson this is the the first season of his big league career in which he's been in the big leagues the entire year oh with that arm first pitch and that misses inside for a ball made three starts in his first big league action 2022 one his big league debut that year in San Diego throwing seven shutout Innings and then last year in the in the big League's most of the Year 27 starts here's the 10 and Peña hits it in the air to Center McCarthy comes in a few steps waiting and squeezes it for out number two Nelson was on the post season roster for the Diamondbacks last year on their run to the World Series and he was more or less used as their long man as a matter of fact had a relief outing in the World Series in game four his only appearance in which he threw five in the third Innings and gave up a run yeah I'd like to see that velocity come down a little bit and see what he see what he's featuring with the breaking ball yeah hasn't really had to use the breaking ball yet here's Victor kartini first pitch there's a breaking ball and that's a strike a curveball nothing in one kartini hitting 276 341 on base percentage six homers 22 RBI getting the started first base tonight kartini hitting 320 over his last 10 games the 01 swing and a dribbler foul off to the left and it's nothing in [Music] two Nelson second round pick of the Diamondbacks in 2019 out the University of Oregon where he was a a short stop as well as a pitcher he didn't pitch excl exclusively until his last year at Oregon and he was working mostly as a reliever for the Ducks Diamondbacks they drafted him and made him a starting pitcher here's the 02 and that is inside with a fast ball one and two so not a lot of miles on Nelson's arm compared to a lot of pitchers with his amount of professional experience No Doubt here comes the one-w breaking ball spoiled foul head it over the screen behind home actually that was a change up you know and I you know he throws the ball straight over the top which is kind of funny if he was a short stop you know Short Stops don't throw like that right uh to make that adjustment right off the get-go so they saw something immediately with him here comes the onew and that's a chopper right side to his left it's the second baseman Gori he has as it throws to First in time and the side is retired 1 two three inning for Nelson and after two Diamondbacks three Astros nothing cancer is never just cancer [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Tuesday night game throughout the season go to astros.com stardogs to get your tickets today next game for the Astros will be a dollar Dog Night Astros off tomorrow start a three- game series with the A's Tuesday night 710 first pitch it'll be Spencer arag Getti against Osvaldo bedau three nothing Diamondbacks lead the Astros as we start the third Justin Verlander set to work to Heraldo Pomo who grounded out his first time up paven Smith three-run Homer in the second bregman in on the grass at third berlander the kick and the pitch and the fast ball is off the outside corner at 93 ball one fourth start for ver Anderson coming off the injured list missed two months with the neck injury the 1 and that's down an end with a breaking ball two balls and no strikes and ever since having that neck issue berlander has really worked on improving his posture in every way possible the 2 there's a strike on the outside corner because it's believed that's what led to the neck issues he's even start to focus more on how he sits on the plane things like that that's what we get we get old yeah here's a 2-1 and that is a bit outside check to swing and it's three balls into strike yeah it makes a difference you know especially with you know we're in such hot weather into AC and all that kind of stuff it's just a weird deal 3-1 and that is popped up Shallow Center out as Peña in is McCormack Peña calling everyone off and makes the one-handed grab with a first out last four hitters have hit the ball in the shallow center field against Verlander here's Jack Peterson hit by pitch his first time up Peterson with the canary yellow batting gloves cleats and shinard yellow is not one of the Diamondbacks colors first pitch and that is in there for a strike at the knees with a change up nothing in one I know I like that players are allowed to express a little more flare now with their uh apparel choices oh1 curveball and that is ripped over the leap of Altuve and in the right a base hit Peterson hit that hard 108 mph off his Bat on a curveball and Peterson has the fourth hit of the game for Arizona he's on with one out man back when I played the I wish I hate to say those words but you couldn't wear anything had to be in the uniform couldn't wear white cleats had to be predominantly black or the color of the uniform right uh you couldn't do anything oh the Oakland A or there that was the only team only team well Astros wore white we could wear white at home white cleats y that was part of our deal here's Josh Bell switch hitting first baseman fly out his first time takes one in the durt to change up ball one but as soon as we change uniforms you couldn't right so you could wear white with the in the early 90s with those uh with those Astros uniforms yeah we had white and Alamo one0 that's outside 2 and0 yeah they kind of cream colored yeah dirty dirty white yeah for the road unifor so we get two pairs of shoes that's it now they got like 400 pairs of shoes one was a dirty pair of white ones that were the road ones and the white ones were for home 2 that's in the dirt three balls and no strike she'd go through a whole season two pairs of cleat yeah well probably a little bit more than that but yeah but basically that was the idea you couldn't do different variables right I mean think about our Astros uniform with that rainbow color you could have done a whole bunch of different things oh sure you could have had guys we were in cleats with all the the different colors of that rainbow 3 swing and a foul tip held on to by Diaz 3 and one and then you think about you know the things they do like players weekend yeah all that stuff can do you know Memorial Day Weekend stuff like that guys we'll get to where different things Father's Day weekend Mother's Day weekend 3-1 and that's a ground ball pulled through the right side a base hit on his way to second base Peterson he makes the turn headed for third gaml fires it toward third it's cut off and Josh Bell makes it back to- back one out singles for the Diamondbacks who have Runners at the corners and Verlander in trouble for a second straight inning fast ball down the middle that'll bring up Jake McCarthy he singled and scored his first time Up 3 nothing Diamondbacks top of the third Arizona the top scoring offense in baseball we need another popup shallow first pitch curveball misses low and it's ball one and Verlander generally doesn't get a ton of ground ball double plays no he's a he's a flyball pitcher because he pitches up in the strike zone like we talked about earlier the high fast ball has been his bread and butter his whole career and just three ground ball double plays induced by Verlander this year this one's dribbled off to the right one and one this is Verlander's 14th start this season yeah if he's going to get it it's going to be probably on a slider or breaking ball or something like that he doesn't get many on his fast ball unlike fber who gets a ton because his ball sinks Peterson off third Bell off first one out 3 nothing Arizona top of the third now timeout called by McCarthy will step out and take a practice way McCarthy third straight year of at least 20 steals for Arizona second longest such streak in Diamondback's history Tony wack had four straight Seasons like that one-1 and that is just a bit outside two balls into strike Tony WL yeah four straight seasons of 20 or more steals for the Diamondbacks from 99 to 2002 yeah he could run yes he could the 2-1 and that is just off the outside corner again not missing by a lot with these last two pitches but missing and it's three and one as Verlander once again falls behind in the count 55 pitches for Verlander working in the third 3-1 and that's down an end Ball Four Miss with the slider Diamondbacks of the base is loaded with one out first walk issued by Verlander that'll get Josh Miller out to the mound got to give him a break right here sometimes JB gets he gets going real fast uh just gets it and throws it just trying to give him a break give him a [Music] breather so Verlander Josh Miller talking things over few of the infielders joining in on the conversation as well home plate umpire Lance Barrett head it out to break it up but it ends before he can get to the mound Suarez dangerous had a home run yesterday has 25 home runs on the season comes up with The Bases Loaded in one out Arizona already leading 3 nothing in the top of the third Suarez singled his first time up that's Peterson at third Bell at second and McCarthy at first for Arizona berlander out of the windup delivers and that's hit foul and out of playoff to the right nothing in one 96 on that fast ball to Suarez yeah humped it up yeah that's one thing he's always done in his career when he when he needs a little bit more he's got it Outfield straight away against the right-handed hitter here's the 01 and that misses down and away one and one Astros play the infield back shallowest of the infielders is kartini at first couple of steps behind the bag playing off the line against the right-handed hitter only right-handed hitter in Arizona's lineup today fanders 1-1 curve ball snaps in for a strike right at the knees one and two it's good pitch there kind of got him to buckle on it too it's a double play candidate even though he doesn't hit into many berlander with the onew and that is hit through the left side a base hit that'll score Peterson Bell goes to third 4 nothing Arizona Suarez is two for two picks up his 89th run batted in and the bases remain loaded for Arizona 97 on that fast ball I think he wanted a little higher than it was but Suarez able to hit it through the left side yeah it was supposed to be away kind of leaked middle middle [Music] in so the Diamondbacks keeping the pressure on here it's now paven Smith who at a three-run home run off the right field foul pole stands in first pitch is off the outside corner for ball one and field stays back for the Astros playing slightly to pull against the left-handed hitter here's a 1 and that is a little bit low with the slider looks like he's having trouble getting a feel for his breaking stuff right now yeah he is um he's kind of encouraged with the 96 and then the 97 they're just fighting it the 2 fast ball strike on the outside corner two and one yeah the velocity as you mentioned definitely up from where it had been particularly his last outing the 2-1 and that's hit fouling out of play off to the left and in some ways I was talking about this with Dana Brown on astal launch earlier in some ways it's almost like spring training for Verlander as he tries to kind of yeah two two months is a lot especially for a guy 41 years old right that's a ton of time Bell at third McCarthy at second Suarez at first four nothing Diamondbacks one out top of the third here's a 2-2 to Smith and he hits this in the air deep to left field Alvarez is back so is McCormack and it's into the landri Crawford boxes a grand slam for paav and Smith his second home run of the game he has driven in seven and the Diamondbacks now lead this one 8 to nothing pav and Smith having himself a day and it's only the third inning son take it to the bus cuz it only goes downhill from here that is that is quite a quite a two at bats that'll bring up Adrien del Castillo who flyed out his first [Music] timeout pitch on the way and that is off the outside corner for a ball fourth Grand Slam Allowed by Astros pitching this year the 1 and that is in there for a strike and it's one and one 67 pitches for Verlander it's only the third inning 1- one and that is lined in the right field a base hit that's down the line headed toward the corner del Castillo on his way to second base and he has himself a double so Justin verland are not fooling anybody right now as he has allowed six straight to reach and that'll get Caleb Ferguson up in the Astros Bullpen Del casel who was one for his last 21 picks up his third double and this crowd is silent here's Luis goret popped out his first time pitch on the way that's a curve strike on the outside corner that was Verlander's 30th pitch of this third inning and again he was under duress for much of the second inning as well the 01 swinging in a Miss at a fast ball and it's nothing in two gor yeah when when things kind of get going sideways uh your mistakes get hit all the time and you know the chances you throw it another another day it's a popup today it's a homer 02 and that smacked foul over the screen and it's nothing in two still so his misses have been in the middle of the plate um not on the corners the corners have been out for balls instead of on the corner it's just that's what happens when you get hit 02 and that sliced down the left field line over is Alvarez by the line makes the catch and finally the second out of the inning del Castillo back to second base bring up Corbin Carrol ninth man to bat in the inning he's 0 for two with a couple of fly outs the Grand Slam by paven Smith is only the fourth Grand Slam Verlander has allowed in his big league career really and the first in more than 14 years that's amazing infield Shades to pull Diamondbacks leading 8 nothing pitch on the way and that zips in there for a strike nothing and one Luis Val bua the former Astro was the last player to hit a grand slam off of Verlander he did it while playing for Cleveland back in April of 2010 the 01 hit off the hands and foul out of play off to the left nothing in two the other Grand Slams Verlander has allowed in his career came in 2007 that was hit by Joe Mau of the Twins and AJ pinski then of the white socks got him for a Grand Slam in 2006 but just four grand slams Allowed by Verlander that's probably his first year wasn't it uh 2006 was his first full season yes he run the Rookie of the Year 02 curve ball and that's lifted and caught by P just as it was sinking basically hit right to him makes the shoulder High grab and the side is retired but damage done as a diamond back score five runs four of them thanks to paven Smith's Grand Slam and we through two and a half Diamondbacks eight Astros nothing rooting for the family team has become quite the tradition at amigi bank it's something we grew up doing and it's [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] City on First Responders night presented by budlight on Wednesday September 11th be sure to get the purchase or purchase the First Responders night hat add-on package before it sells out go to astros.com firstresponders Astros have their work cut out for them Diamondbacks lead 8 nothing as we start the home home third Ryan Nelson has retired six of the 7even he face delivers to Ben gaml and it's a fast ball for strike on the outside corner gaml left-handed hitting right Fielder batting 264 398 on base percentage a home run and four rbi's the 01 breaking ball drops in for a strike and it's nothing and two there's the curve from Nelson oh yeah he throw a curveball in there too but this is uh another one where it's just one batter at a time and field Shades to pull here's the O2 swing and a miss good morning good afternoon and good night got him on a change up that's the fourth strike out for Nelson as gaml goes down yeah gaml shaking his head going everybody's getting 97 and 99 I'm getting CT balls and change up so whatever that last pitch was so one out nobody on for Chaz McCormack Astro Center Fielder batting 203 264 on base percentage five homers 27 RBIs MCC Corman couple of hits including a two-run single yesterday pitch on the way and McCormack lifts this one in the center that's a base hit the first of the night for the Astros CH McCormack continues to swing the bad well since his return from AAA Sugarland and he's on with one out in the home third yeah we talked last night about that b said he got to Right Center kind of kept him through the ball thankfully got a 94 mph fast ball instead of the [Music] [Applause] 99 yeah that's the softest fast ball we've SE here's Altuve struck out his first time up Outfield straight away pitch on the way curveball and that is outside for a ball yeah that pitch doesn't look as natural as the fast [Music] balls Caleb Ferguson continues to warm in the Astros Bullpen so it looks like Justin Verlander is done after three Innings of work the 1 and that is off the outside corner with a cutter it's two balls and no strikes this the same guy pitching against us looks a little different now huh it is when he was thrown 97 to 99 2 swing in a Miss there's the cutter and it's two and one starting to mix in more of his other pitches that's what we talked about earlier generally that's what happens you establish trying to establish your fast ball you know early in the game and then have to mix and stuff after that to get him off it Bell holding on McCormick at first base the 2-1 and that is inside like a little Quick Pitch there yeah it's three and one and that's the way Verlander pitched most of his career you know he throws a lot of his fast balls early in the count um but JV you know just had a hard time locating his fast ball today Diamond Backs with an 8 nothing lead throw over to First McCormack back standing not exactly sure why Ryan Nelson's worried about Chaz mccor eight to [Music] nothing Chaz goes and gets thrown out at second base he might as well keep going out of the ballpark 3-1 and that is a strike right at the knees on the inside corner at 95 and a Full Count to Altuve Alvarez on Deck he missed his spot and became down and in for a strike um sometimes you miss spots in it right down the middle that's the difference 32 fouled back to the screen got a cutter and the count remains three and [Music] two Astros taking the first two games of this series from Arizona really swung the bats well in both games obviously going to need to swing the bats really well tonight if they're going to come back in this one the pitch and Altuve hits it in the air to left it fooled Smith racing in Pomo going out and P makes the catch for out number one back to first goes McCormick Smith foed by fooled by the big swing of Altuve looked like Jose got it off the end of the bat but Pomo making a nice play he was still cutting out cutting up all his RBI you couldn't believe it I got seven ribbies and two homers and three Innings there's Alvarez he grounded out his first time Alvarez has seven RBI in this series yeah first pitch curveball that Miss is down and end ball one never know you really don't I've seen eight nothing leads or eight run leads go away you never know there's a game against St Louis that I believe you played in yes Astros came back 1 and Alvarez takes one outside two balls and no strikes Nelson brings the hands together set at the belt two and there's a strike on the outside corner with a cutter a back door cutter two and one both of these teams off days tomorrow Diamondbacks head home after this have the Rangers and the Brewers in the desert 2-1 and Alvarez hits it in the air down the right field line racing over Caroll and he runs it down about 3 or 4 feet from the foul line and the side is retired Astros a one out hit but that's all and after three Innings Diamondbacks eight Astros nothing and we're back with the action [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] is now on pitch for Houston in the top of the fourth inning Leander facing Heraldo Pomo who has grounded out and popped out Ferguson 4.47 RA in 55 games 48 in the third Innings 50 hits 23 walks 57 strikeouts pommo turns around and bats from the right side in the first pitch to him as a breaking ball strike nothing and one Ferguson a three er and 13 appearances since joining the Astros in a trade from the Yankees here's the 01 and that's down an end did he go around no swing that's according to Jeremy rigs at first it's a ball into strike so Justin Verlander done after just three Innings gives up eight runs eight hits one walk and no strikeouts for [Music] Verlander the 1- one that's down and in seven of the eight Diamondbacks runs driven in by Haven Smith who had a three-run homer in the second and a Grand Slam in the third 2-1 ground ball left side pass the diving Peña and in the left field the base hit for Pomo the ninth hit for Arizona and it comes leading off the fourth hard hit ground ball yeah tonight was just the fourth start in Verlin 's career in which he did not record a strikeout and the first since July of 2017 when he was with Detroit now it's Jack Peterson he's been hit by a pitch and he is singled he's also scored a run reaching both times infield plays him the pole kartini holding on the runner left on left match up the pitch and Peterson takes one inside ball one these two former teammates with the Dodgers which was Ferguson original organization first five Big League Seasons with LA through last year got right went to the Yankees yeah 10 and that is down it's two balls and no strikes to Ferguson or to uh Peterson from Ferguson close enough High set now the 2-0 curve ball drops in for a strike two and one Peterson originally getting to the the big leagues back in with the uh Dodgers back in 2014 here's a 2-1 and that is a little bit low three balls in a strike his dad played for the Dodgers too Stu Peterson was an outfielder got eight big games all with the Dodgers in 1985 no kidding 3-1 and that is low ball four so not the best start for Ferguson a single and a walk Diamondbacks with a chance to add to their already sizable lead with Pomo at second Peterson at first for Josh bell bell singled and scored in the third he's also flyed out Bell acquired from the Marlins at the trade deadline for a player to be named later second straight year that he was traded at the deadline Ferguson steps off as Pomo was dancing off second base last year Bell started the season with Cleveland and got traded to the Marlins High set now the pitch ground ball dribbled foul just to the left of home plate strike one as a matter of fact the day that Bell got traded last year from Cleveland to the Marlins the Guardians were in Houston and they had to change their lineup at the last minute because of the trade and fber Valdez went out and threw a no hitter against him that was August 1st last year yeah 01 that's in the dirt knocked down by Diaz and it's a 1-1 count we could we could potentially throw some no hitters up there a lot you've done pretty good the last few years with guys going out there and giving it a shot out there is it 17 no hit bids since uh 2017 that have lasted at least seven Innings by far the most in the majors this one's lifted into Center by Bell coming in McCormack he's there to make the cap High catch for out number one Runners Retreat you can book the 2017 or the 2022 Commissioners trophies for your next event to learn more go to astros.com Trophy Astros with a a magic number coming into this game of 15 to clinch the division and get back to the postseason the Mariners Lo the Mariners won their game earlier in St Louis Astros have a five-game lead here's Jake McCarthy first pitch and McCarthy takes a strike on the outside corner he has singled walked and scored twice today the Mariners losing to the Cardinals last night two to nothing Astros gained a game on Seattle yesterday the 01 that's a ground ball hit softly right side coming on the field at Ferguson and he tags out the runner excellent play by Ferguson and I think the reason you were groaning there baggy cuz those are really tricky plays kind of a tweener play both kartini and Ferguson going for it Ferguson fielded it and still was close enough to McCarthy to tag him out especially in impressive considering how well McCarthy runs that's the thing how well McCarthy runs so one unassisted you don't write that often in your scorebook no you do not so Pomo now at third Peterson at second two outs eight nothing Diamondbacks top of the fourth aino Suarez at the plate two for two with an RBI and two- Run scor High set now the pitch and that's in there for a strike at the knees with the breaking ball with that great play stop by any Daniels Jeweler's location and say Astros for your free team bracelet and $50 gift card toward any purchase of 99 or more Daniels Jewelers own the dream here's the 01 and that is at the knees again fast ball at 994 and it's quickly 0 and2 to Suarez two strike pitch swing and a mess good morning good afternoon and good night Suarez got him on the breaking ball in the dirt and the side is retired first two Diamond Backs reach but no harm done and after a three and a half Diamondbacks eight Astros nothing now this from your local station this guy the hospital [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] for that brilliant young right-hander 15 game winner and does it with a gem that was the great Milo Hamilton calling the great Daryl Kyle no hitter 31 years ago today yeah September 8th 1993 against the Mets at the Astrodome 8 nothing Arizona leads the Astros bottom of the fourth pitches outside to Kyle Tucker reached on catchers interferences last time of course you were on the field I was for that no hitter Best Days of My Career the 1 and that is pulled foul up the first base side yeah you had an RBI double in that game remember he serves well it wasn't that well I also made an error that's why it was a 4 to one game I wasn't going to get into that no that's perfectly fine I blame Kimi for that and then actually the umpire's fault really yeah it was a weird play it hit Butch husky in the foot and the Umpire didn't call it 1-1 that's outside in low it was actually Joe orac I looked it up today yeah it was Joe orac or maybe just punched out but husky so it was the um it was the fourth inning of that game Astros already had the lead and uh yeah a ball hit the foot of Joe orac from Kyle the 2-1 that's outside I believe it was a curveball yes it was and orac was hopping away because it hit his foot and rolled to the towards the Dugout nobody was calling anything the guy maybe it was Butch husky was on First and he was they were running around to third base and I ran over there and picked it up the 31's a strike on the outside corner three and two to Tucker threw it to cetti over there and he missed it after all the balls I picked for him at first base and they scored a run but what I said was one of the greatest times in my life cuz I've never been so happy for a teammate ever at that particular point the 3-2 to Tucker and that's hit foul back into the screen he was my roommate in instructional League my roommate in the big leagues in 91 and we were very very close friends unfortunately up until his death three and two the count to Tucker here's the payoff pitch curve ball that's outside ball four so Tucker walks the first allowed by Nelson that comes to lead off the home fourth yeah you never know what can happen this you know his velocity was so you know we're appraising his velocity in the first inning and now he's pitching at 94 so things have changed a little bit since then fourth inning brought to you by the Houston Health Department where we care about your health remember Alex bregman with a two-run shot his 22nd home run of the year it is 8-2 Arizona that get out of here in a hurry yep there's a start there's six we got six back now one at a time that'll get Brent Str out of the Dugout the Diamondbacks pitching coach bregman now with 65 runs batted in and with that home run the Philips 66 Home Run pump total is now 2,436 Astros homers in menade Parks history Philip 66 official home run sponsor of the Houston Astros look like bregman came up there looking for a heater in and he got it yeah you know Alex hits the ball in very well U you know when he came up there the first time it was 98 and there 99 and that one was at 95 I think so yep little bit of a difference you know Crawford boxes help there um it all counts so the Astros down 8-2 now it's Cher Diaz who struck out his first time up was that Daryl Kyle no hitter the first time You' ever been part of a no hitter at any level yes pitch on the way from Nelson and that's a ground ball left side shuffle stepped to his right for Pomo he's got it throws to First and time one away you know especially being my roommate yeah you know someone you were very close with I mean Daryl and I got called up excuse me we made the team out of spring training in ' 91 and we both thought we were going to get dropped off at the hotel cuz it was a joke at the Save in in CMI Florida Jeremy Peña flyed out his first time pitch on the way that is at the knees for a strike that was low but called a strike did you and Daryl Kyle find out you were on the opening day roster in 91 at the same time yes we couldn't believe it the 01 and that's hit down the right field line slicing Carol a long run in the foul territory reaches and makes the catch just before getting to the netting nice play by Corbin Carroll covered a lot of real estate to get to that foul ball for the second out the way they used to do it is we'd sit around we have stretch and then you'd wait and then you'd see if our clubhouse guy or travel secretary came out and he kind of tapped you on the head that means you had to go in that means you got sent down uhhuh and we're just kind of sitting we're looking at each other and you know Luis Gonzalez at the time he already thought he won the Rookie of the Year and uh and they didn't tap us on the shoulder we couldn't believe it first pitch to Victor kartini ground ball up the middle right at the short stop pero who's right behind second throws to First and the side is retired Astros get on the board on bregman's two-run Homer and after four Diamondbacks eight Astros two [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] Hello Kitty bucket toe earn more and get your tickets at astros.com promotions 8 to2 Diamondbacks lead the Astros as we go to the bottom of the fifth Caleb ort on the mound for the Astros right-hander 1.06 ER in 13 games 17 Innings eight hits two walks 18 strikeouts leag batting 136 against Orton baggy he's been quite the fine for the Astros a waiver claim from Baltimore pitch very well at Sugarland uh couple of in the big leagues yeah I mean I'm watching I'm looking at the the uh reports in Sugarland every day and I'm like this kid's throwing like 97 99 why we don't have this kid in the big leagues first pitch to paven Smith and that's in there for a strike paven Smith the star of the game three-run Homer in the second a Grand Slam in the third it's only downhill from here Justin Verlander knocked out after three Innings charged with all eight runs the Diamondbacks have scored did not record a strikeout 01 is at the knees for a strike and it's nothing and two yeah he's done a great job and he's a really good kid quiet [Music] um great find was on paternity leave a couple of weeks ago he and his wife having their first child the O2 and that is off the plate away a one-w count or came up in July early part of July was up for 5 days made a couple of appearances and was outstanding yep it was a roster crunch he had to go down he was he had options the one two that is off the outside corner with a change up and when he got sent down Joe is spot to make clear to him he was like hey you are a part of this we you're we're going to be able to use you you're going to be back here and sure enough he came back up a couple of weeks later and has been up ever since 22 to Smith and that's popped foul and out of play behind home and into the third deck two and two still that change up he threw the pitch beforehand if he can fine-tune that with that pitch the change up with that hard fast ball he can be even better um which is hard really even to say since he's pitched so well he's got a 1.06 two two and that is Hammer deep to right hooking and gone the third home run of the game for pav and Smith he has driven in eight it is nine to two Arizona apparently it doesn't get any get any more difficult that's crazy Smith came into this game with four home runs in 43 games on the season and he has three home runs tonight and it's only the fifth inning yeah he's got a smirk right there you know that a rocket down the right field line Lord hit that 112 milph here's Adrien del Castillo a double and a fly out first pitch is a strike at the top of the Zone nothing in one started him with the cutter it's rare that you see a team score nine runs and one guy has driven in all but one of them yeah 01 swing and a miss at a cutter in nothing and two wow Port relieve Caleb Ferguson who threw a scoreless fourth inning the2 and that misses down one and two the Astros with an off day tomorrow so they can kind of empty their Bullpen tonight if need be and then after tomorrow's off day 16 straight days with a game The onew Swinging a Miss finished them off with a 98 mph fastball upstairs del Castillo strikes out and there's one away for the first time ever with MLB Network and an a bat subscription stream the MLB Network 247 plus select out ofm Market games visit mlb.com atbad for details here's Luis goret he has popped out and flyed out or it delivers and that's over for a strike nothing in one so you were saying earlier when you and Daryl Kyle got to the big leaks at the same time found out you were on the opening day roster in 91 that basically you didn't get you didn't get the tap on the shoulder right that's how you knew you made the team 01 check swing dribbled out in front of the plate and fielded by the catcher Diaz throws the first in time for the out almost came together with ort ort yielded at the last instant and there are two away that been like a football Sunday right there two big dudes just running into each other yeah you're not kidding so two out nobody on for Corbin Caroll who's over for three tonight so no one actually told you you made the team you just found out you made the team because you were still there yeah we figured it out afterwards um it was just weird really surreal situation uh to think back that long ago how that went down first pitch to Carol that's outside for a ball so art how never called you into the office or anything like that it was crazy it might have been the other way around that they did tap us and tell us we made I don't even know I can't remember but it was so confusing back then cuz I couldn't believe it one that's outside so you didn't think you were going to make the team out of spring training I mean no not really I mean I thought with 10 days left I was getting sent down and next thing you know they asked me to play first base they said Bob Watson said you want to play first base in big leagues or you want to play Third Base in Triple A and I'm not that smart but I can figure that one out 2 it's in there for a strike at the knees two and one worked with Matt gante as's infield coach to learn first Bas actually Bob Robertson who was a first baseman for the Pirates back in the day 2-1 that's outside we had we had a crash course every every morning every afternoon and then I would play in the the B game first and then I would play in the bigly game after that so you're playing in two games a day two games you had to learn first base 3-1 and that misses low and outside Ball Four Carol draws the walk as ort Miss with the cutter he's on with two out for Heraldo Pomo who is one for three with a single 9-2 Arizona top of the fifth if I see that kid Paving on the iPad I'm going to lose it there's nothing to look at yeah they have a shot whatever you're doing yeah just stay right there the iPad should be asking him for advice exactly first pitch to Pomo that sails outside and high for a ball he is literally to two home run a two-run homer away from the cycle of homers yeah I know that's never happened I don't believe it has no chance 1 oh that is down and in and it's two balls and no strikes now to Pomo I'd rather not see it here nine to2 Diamondbacks unless it's yon or something right ort brings the hands together now steps off and looks Caroll back to first base pretty sure ESPN's going to show it tonight kid you don't have to watch it now oh yeah he's looking at something on the iPad now shot of him in the Dugout 2 and there's a strike on the outside corner two and one so you weren't a guy who went back to the video room to look at it a pat only well we didn't have a video room that's true 2-1 hit foul over the screen we had a v we had video downstairs and the only time I would go back and look is if I thought of if I wanted to know whether or not it was a strike that they called me out on or were they trying to pitch me in and they just missed and they went in so I can realize that they weren't trying to throw the ball there gotcha to two and that is strike three call at the knees with the cutter on the side corner Pomo goes down looking and the side is retired when you don't have or to paint the corners called C Pro painters they can paint the full interior exterior surfaces of your home go to certapro.com paven Smith with his third home run of the game and after 4 and a half Diamond packs N9 Astros 2 [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] down n-2 Arizon Nelson who delivers it's outside for a ball gaml struck out swinging his first time up Alex bregman a two-run homer in the fourth the only scoring for the Astros to this point Astros are down 8 nothing after two and a half Innings the 1 and gamble lifts this one in the shallow left field late break for Smith and that's going to drop in front of him that late break C Smith otherwise that's an out so I guess paven Smith isn't perfect and he's on gaml is to lead off the home fifth that would have been a tough one anyway probably playing a little too deep for gaml yeah the other way yeah so one on and nobody out for Chaz McCormack who singled this first time Diamondback's one of those teams that play their outfielders deep at all times basically yeah they're deep I mean you're you're seeing more and more teams do that for first pitch to McCormick is high the Tampa Bay Rays are the first team I can remember trying to take away the extra base hit yep it's like okay you're going to give up some bloop hits from time to time but those are just going to be one base is the the thinking behind that try to prevent the doubles and the triples by playing deep the 1 is highing away and it's two balls and no strikes to McCormack right-hander set at the belt now the 2- and that is in there for a strike 93 on the fast balls a fastball velocity steadily decreases for Nelson who was 97 and 99 with that fast ball the first inning or two the 2-1 and that's high in away three balls in a strike good one guy a Time Diamondbacks had a decision to make when Merill Kelly came off the injured list in mid August he had been out for 4 months almost with a shoulder injury about who to keep in the rotation who was going to leave the rotation there's a strike on the outside corner at the knees McCormack took a step toward it first but that was a good pitch fans don't like it but Lance Barrett got it right it's a 3-2 count and the Diamondbacks decided to demote Jordan Montgomery put him in the bullpen because he had been pitching poorly and you know Ryan Nelson had been pitching very well 3-2 cormack lines Us in the right center field that's a base hit gamble makes the turn he'll go to third as the ball's played back in by McCarthy and Chaz McCormick is two for two yeah you never know as a hitter when things change you know and Chaz got that hit with the base is loaded last night then hit that ball to Right Center we'll talk to him a little bit about that after the game he's gotten two hits today that way um you know things have changed uh and that's great cuz when Chaz gets hot he gets real hot same with this guy Jose Altuve well he's Jose Altuve yes 0 for two tonight with a strikeout and a pop out he's got a track record first pitch swing and a miss big cut at a cutter upstairs nothing in one Al Tu was trying to hit that onto the train tracks gaml at third McCormack at first nobody out Diamondbacks lead 9-2 bottom of the fifth the pitch and a swing and a foul back to the screen another awkward swing and a pitch that was well out of the strike zone a fast ball about head high and it's nothing in two tuve uses his timeout as he'll readjust the vro on the batting gloves Runners lead off first and third leo2 outside and low with a slider one and two think about Jose is you know I've seen him his entire career um he could take some bad swings here and there but the great thing is he never puts him in play and the bad ones he does put in play dribbled on the third base line he gets knocks but he can fix himself pitch by pitch which is impressive one two It's tap foul behind home on the curve one and two still he's just a different animal you know it's I used to tell George Springer don't watch what Jose does at home plate cuz you can't replicate that he's just a special dude yeah um you might want to talk to him in a thought process but not exactly on his mechanics and how he goes about it here's a onew high did Altuve hold on the swing he held that's according to Jeremy rigs at first that time Nelson humped it up to 97 on that fast ball two and two the count to Altuve pitch on the way and that is just just off the outside corner Oh by an eyelash with that cutter a call good Callo balls the ball three and two the count Runners lead off first and third payoff pitch and altu lifts this one in center field and that's going to get down for a base hit gble can walk home McCormack goes to Second Jose Altuve with an RBI single and it's N9 to3 Arizona that's what I'm talking about he can take some really bad swings and figure it out and there you go he hit a line drive to left center right [Music] there 60th RBI of the season for Altuve who now has 170 hits fourth most in the AL and that'll get Brin Str out of the Dugout yeah you got we're down by six you got Yan up with two guys on that was our Honda Drive of the game racing today for a great deal on a Honda at your Greater Houston Honda dealer yeah things can get Mighty interesting here they sure can with yordon Alvarez with a big swing all the infielders joining in on this mound meeting as Nelson needs three more outs to qualify for a victory home plate umpire Lance Barrett now making his way out to the mound Bren STM headed back to the third base Dugout a few of the players linger and now Lance Barrett tells them to move along a cormick at third or at second base altu at first three straight hits for the Astros to begin the home fifth down now by six runs yordan Alvarez to the plate he has a ground out and a fly out Alvarez hit two three-run home runs in the first game of this series on Friday night Outfield straightway and deep infield shaded to pole pitch on the way and that is off the outside corner and low ball one 97 on the fast ball so now the velocity is creeping back up for Nelson that he's in trouble yeah dur runs is starting to get to him the one and that is outside with another fast ball at 97 and it's two balls and no strikes to [Music] yordon interesting pitch right here what he throws and as he stay with the heater oh the 2- it is a fast ball and it's off the outside corner again and it's 3 and0 nobody out Kyle Tucker on Deck two men already on for the Astros so all three of these fast balls have missed away from Nelson about to deliver his 71st pitch here it is and there's a strike on the outside corner 97 on that heater again and it's three and one so sticking with number one [Music] [Applause] here 3-1 breaking ball low Ball Four that was actually the change up change up yeah and Alvarez draws the walk to load the Bas is for Tucker Must Be a nice comeback right here Tucker for your first knock back in three months second walk Allowed by Nelson so McCormack at third out tuve at second Alvarez at first and Kyle Tucker second game he's played in since coming off the injured list on Friday up in a big spot Outfield Shades the pull first pitch and that's way high a change up Miss badley with it ball one the tuck was coming out of his shoes right there he was he was going so far forward he's got a calm down I know he's excited big opportunity right here hasn't played in 3 months you buddy tu career 409 hitter with the base has loaded the 1 is a strike with a fast ball at 95 this time on the outside corner Kyle with five grand slams in his career he is one for four with the bases loaded this season infield back for Arizona leading by six with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth 1-1 swing and a miss at a fast ball upstairs at 98 reach back in the bottom of the barrel right there and found 98 down there and it's one and two now to Tucker Tucker drew a walk and scored in the fourth reached on catcher's interference in the first Bas is full of Astros here's the onew and Tucker Hits it high in the air out to left Center to his left Smith he's there to make the catch tagging McCormack he will score a sacrifice fly for Tucker and it's 9 to4 Arizona maybe got under that fast ball Just a Touch just a little bit so Tucker earns his 41st RBI of the season and his first run batted in since coming off the injured list so Altuve still at second Alvarez still at first for bregman who hit a first pitch to run Homer his last time was on a fast ball he's also struck out Diamond Backs will get activity in their Bullpen right-hander Kevin gingle is warming Nelson set at the belt a look at second now the pitch fast ball strike at 97 near the bottom of the Zone nothing in one one strike pitch and there's another strike with a cutter on the outside corner bregman wasn't so sure but Lance Barrett got that right they did good pitch do about that bregman with some words for Barrett nothing in [Music] two Ryan Ryan Nelson hasn't lost since June 26 02 and that is outside with a fast ball one and two he is letting it fly right now yeah he [Music] is tuve at second Alvarez at first N9 to four Diamondbacks bottom of the fifth base hit the right right here one two swing and foul back to the screen on an elevated fast ball and we'll do it again at 1 and two gregman climbs back in the Box chokes up on the bat per usual waiting for a [Music] one-w here it comes and that's high two and two [Applause] first four Astros this inning reaching base before Tucker sack fly care how hard it is to get the ball down to Alex Alex can hit it two two outside with a cutter and it's a full count asttr is really making Nelson work this inning big pitch right here in the ball game even us down by five it's still a big pitch [Music] 3-2 bregman lines this one toward left center field Smith over reaches and makes the catch and that is the second out hit pretty well by bregman but pav and Smith didn't have to go far to get it in the left Center Gap now it's Jer Diaz's turn with two out still two men on jer's 0 for two tonight with a strikeout and a ground out should be ready in the Diamondbacks Bullpen set at the belt by Nelson the pitch swinging a Miss got a fast ball by him upstairs at 97 nothing in one you really got to tght yourself of guys that throw hard like this to get the ball [Music] down 01 swinging a foul back to the screen on another elevated heater and it's quickly o and two yeah you can't make a living up there swinging of pitches up there you know every one that you hit the other you know 50 you're going to either foul off or swing and Miss but janner knows that janner's done a run better job in the last two months of swinging at strikes here's the2 swinging a foul back at the screen on another high fast ball well above the strike zone in two still that knocked off a piece of the uh robotic camera by the screen behind home plate he's picked up by Peña who will hand it to the bat boy if you have the pitcher here throw it even higher I guess if you that ball was at his head high Altuve off second Alvarez off first another 02 and that is hit softly in the right field that's a base hit altu around third he will score Alvarez in the second Yer Diaz with a two out RBI single N9 to five Diamond Backs that is when every single person that's a hitter is going are you kidding me you just threw all those pitches above and he's swinging at and you're going to try and trick him that's how we make money that's how we make money and that'll get that'll cost him Tory lell out of the Dugout so Ryan Nelson finishes one out shy of qualifying for a win yeah all those High fast balls Diaz kept fouling them back swung through one and throws him a cutter running away from him and yer well that was a gift yeah I mean you still got to hit it don't get me wrong sure especially but Jer can do stuff like that he you know you you can mess around he'll swing at some bad pitch [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] 2.87 RA in in 62 games 62 and 2/3 Innings 58 hits 13 walks 67 strikeouts League batting 245 against a 30-year-old from Lake Side California nine to5 Diamond Backs Astros have scored three here in the bottom of the fifth two out two on for Jeremy Peña first pitch did he go around on the pitch inside he did says Jeremy rigs at first and that strike one to Peña who was flyed out and fouled out today yordan Alvarez at second base Jer Diaz just had a two- out RBI single he's at first he knocked the starter Nelson out 01 and there's a strike on the inside corner and it's quickly 0 and2 to Peña 94 on that two seamer there Auto take there last time I said something about Auto take you hit a three-run home in the bullpen so hopefully that'll happen again gkl 02 that bounced in there kicks to the right ad del Castillo but gets to it quickly runners hold and it's one and two bury to [Music] slider GLE making his first appearance in this [Music] series works from the third base side of the rubber delivers a two swing and a miss chased a slider that bounced tagged out by D Castillo and the side is retired Astros put up a three spot rbi's by Altuve Tucker and Diaz they strand a couple and we head to the six Diamondbacks nine Astros 5 S Grass Steakhouse [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] more I'm not times a single a walk a hit by pitch and a run first pitch and that bounces in there and off the glove of Diaz for ball one change up from ort Diamondbacks LED this game 8 nothing not knocked Verlander out after three Innings but the Astros have scored five of the last six runs in this contest never know the 1 oh that's highing away two balls and no strikes Diamondbacks have more activity in their Bullpen left-hander AJ Puck is getting loose yeah you're going to see some of our leverage guys pitch this game too just to get some work in the 2 that is a strike on the inside corner yeah you think about uh Josh ha I mean he has aitch this game yeah in quite some time you got to go back to the last home stand the last time hater pitched 2-1 and that's hit off the hands pretty deep to right it sends back gaml on the track has room makes the catch out number one the crowd collectively holding its breath but gaml caught that a couple of steps from the wall bring up Josh Bell he's one for three with a single and a run score yeah Josh haer last pitched last Friday really yep first pitch to Bell and that's a ground ball right side right idle two AAS second Bas picks it up throws to First in time and there are two away let's pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Houston Astros radio network tomorrow morning at 10: inep because you you got to have feel when you pitch no matter if you're hard throw or not you have to have some feel where the ball's going so you got to get some work in here and there 1-1 to McCarthy and that's hit in the air out to left Center fairly deep going back on it McCormack onto the warning track makes the catch in front of the Diamondbacks Bullpen and it's a one two3 inning for Caleb ort the first one two3 inning for Astros pitchers tonight we're through 5 and A2 at minute made Park Diamondbacks nine Astros 5 now this from your local state station the Houston Astros [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] to five lead over the Astros bottom of the six AJ Puck left-hander the third pitcher of the night for Arizona a deadline acquisition by the Diamondbacks from the Marlins 4 and8 3.30 RA in 51 games for starts 60 Innings 44 hits 25 walks 75 71 strikeouts vict kartini will lead it off as a bottom third of the order do up for the Astros who have scored in each of the last two innings two runs in the fourth three in the fifth kartini has grounded out twice today and now Puck having an issue with his [Music] pitchcombe series that is a heck of a beard right there man yes it's pretty thick it's red yeah no lip hair yep oh yeah and not really any under underneath the lip hair below it's that's menacing how about menacing all right we go with menacing let's go with that puck is ready the pitch and kartini fouls it over the screen into the third deck since joining the Diamond bags Puck has allowed one run in 16 Innings that's over 19 games got a good arm really does was the sixth overall pick in the draft in 2016 by the A's 01 and that's a ground ball softly hit up the middle trickling out to Pomo shortstop has it throws to First in time to get kartini and that is out number one going bring up Ben gaml who's one for two with a single into run score actually no this is going to be Jak Myers pinch hitting for gamble with the Lefty now into the game so Myers is going to bat Jake hitting 226 291 on base percentage 12 homers 55 runs batted in Puck when he was drafted at University of Florida it was as a starting pitcher but dealt with some injuries had Tommy John surgery back in 2018 moved to the bullpen Marlins moved him into the rotation to start this year but then he got hurt and he moved him back to the pen first pitch and Meers swings through the slider nothing in one yeah he's a big fell throws hard 6' 7 the 01 and that misses down and in with the fast ball at 96 yeah puck made four starts in April then had a shoulder injury that put him on the shelf for about 3 weeks and after that the Marlins gave up on using him in the rotation 1-1 and Myers hits this in the air out to Center amling to his right waiting for it McCarthy and that's out number two brings up Chaz McCormack who has a couple of hits today Diamondbacks because they've been trailing much of the series really haven't used their leverage guys in the first two games so all those guys are are pretty fresh tonight already saw GLE who got the final out of the fifth inning striking out Peña the only batter he faced and now puck [Music] first pitch to McCormack swing and a miss at a slider nothing in one and they're getting to these leverage guys a little earlier than they normally pitch Puck isn't normally pitching in the sixth inning but a lot of that's the result of Ryan Nelson only going four and 2/3 despite the big lead Nelson giving up five runs so he cannot win this game here's the 01 swing in a m at the slider down and in and it's nothing and two to McCormack I imagine if he can get out there he's going to pitch two innings since we got two lefties coming up uh after Altuve if we don't get going right here 02 and that misses down and end with the slider it's one and two nine to5 Arizona bottom of the six the kick in the one two two and that's inside two and two to McCormack Puck was in his second season with the Marlins when the Diamondbacks acquired him at the end of July 22 McCormick hits this in the air out to Right Center over McCarthy and Carol Carol backing up makes the catch and the side is retired one two three inning for Puck and we go to the seventh Diamond Backs nine Astros [Music] 5 and we're back with the action Coke Zero sugar might be the best Coke ever that's right Jim with an irresistible taste and zero sugar Coke Zero [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Applause] for [Applause] [Music] the seventh Robert Fort Jeff Bagwell producer engineer Matt Boltz at Min made Park new pitcher for the Astros or fourth of the night is right-hander Hector nerys facing aeno Suarez first pitch is outside and in the dirt ball one Suarez two for three with an RBI single and a couple of runs scored nerys making his seventh appearance with the Astros 53rd appearance overall this year a 3.81 ra the 1's a strike on the inside corner 49 and two thirs innings 43 hits 27 walks 51 strikeouts for nerys 1-1 and that is just off the outside corner with a 92 mph two seamer and it's a two ball one strike count the 2-1 inside three and oneys and the rest of the bullpen just trying to keep the game where it is right here give the AST offense more opportunities to come back 3-1 and that is smacked in the center field and it will drop in front of Meers for a base hit and the leadoff man is on for Arizona third hit for Suarez Meers now playing center after pinch hitting with Chaz McCormack moving to right and here is the man of the hour paven Smith he is three for three with three homers I am first eight runs batted in for smith a three-run homer in the second a Grand Slam in the third and a solo Homer in the fifth first pitch and that's over for a strike with the splitter nothing in one second three Homer game for a diamond back this year aino Suarez had a three Homer game against the Nationals at the end of July 01 another splitter and that's at the knees for another strike and it's quickly 0 and2 to Smith they may it hear the loudest Ovation from the crowd tonight if Smith is retired here Harris looks over his left shoulder at Suarez before coming set here's the 02 swing and a miss good morning good afternoon and good night pave and Smith can't handle three straight Splitters from nerys and finally Babe Ruth is retired one away he had a chance for the cycle of homers now it's Adrien del Castillo who is one for three with a double by the way it has been first pitch to Castillo is fouled back to the screen it has been just over 7even years since a player hit four home runs in the game it's happened 16 times in big league history and the last player to do it was a diamondback the 01 and there's a strike on the outside corner with the fast ball former Astro to JD Martinez h four home runs for the Diamondbacks September of 2017 against the Dodgers who he would later play for there goes the runner NIS doesn't see him this one's grounded foul at the first base side nothing in two still Suarez had three or four steps toward second base before nerys even lifted the leg but he'll have to go back to First and still Castillo fouled it off it's nothing in two yeah a snake attack right there Astros leading by four top of the seven two strike pitch and that's in the dirt good block by Diaz keeping that splitter in front of him and it's a one-w count no Astro by the way has ever hit four home runs in a ball game and no one has ever hit four home runs in the game against Houston the onew and that is hit sharply past the diving Altuve and into right field for a basee hit on his way to third goes Suarez the throw win goes all the way to third but not nearly in time and Adrien Del Castile has a second hit and the Diamondbacks threatening for boore with Runners at the corners and one out just to the left of Altuve now it's Luis gor who's 0 for three today pop out fly out and ground out if we get a ground ball we get a double play here and nerys when he's at his best he is getting those ground balls Diamondbacks haven't scored since Smith's last home run in the fifth first pitch to gor is in there for a strike on the inside corner Diamondbacks LED this game 8 nothing Astros scoring five runs over the fourth and fifth Innings to get to within 9 to5 [Music] the 01 swing and a foul tip held on to by Diaz and is quickly 0 and two to gor yor getting his first start in this series playing for his third team this year started the year with the Braves then with the angels 02 and bounced in there knocked down by Diaz on the splitter and it's a one-w count good block there certainly was thereis takes his time getting back to the top of the hill that's Suarez at third del Castillo at first for Arizona del Castillo held on there by kartini the onew that's high Miss badley with the fast ball two and [Music] two it's over his left shoulder before coming set nerys here's a 2- two in the dirt the Army thought about it but he held on the swing another good block by Diaz on the splitter and it's a full count when Hector's at his best he can throw that splitter for a strike when he wants to and one for a ball when he wants to uh and when he's real good he's got his good fast ball working on both sides of the plate the 3-2 Runner takes off from first and this one's lifted to left to his left Alvarez he gets there makes the catch tagging from third as Suarez the throw home on a hop not nearly in time Suarez scores standing up sacrifice fly for Luis gorbe and a Diamondbacks lead 10 to5 gor earning his 10th RBI of the Season yordon threw it right on the money but it was kind of going the other way a little bit so hard to get too much on the throw so Bill Castillo at first two outs back to the top of the order in Corbin Carrol 0 for three with a walk and he takes one in the dirt knocked down by Diaz ball one keeps burying these Splitters nerys NIS the fourth pitcher used by the Astros Justin Verlander started last just three Innings charged with eight runs here's the 1 oh there's a strike on the outside corner at 93 one and one center fielder Meyers Shad slightly the other way the kick and the pitch ground ball tapped softly foul up the first base side just past the Astros Dugout Mariners one earlier in St Louis Astros need to come from behind win tonight if they want to maintain a 5 and 1/2 game lead lead one two up and in turns Carol off the plate with a 93 mph fast ball and it's two and two yeah the way hitters are nowadays the way they dive you know they freak out that Ball's only about four or five inches [Music] inside pitch misses a bit high and it's three and two Nick Hernandez is up in the Astros Bullpen there is 24 pitches here in the seventh inning with two two outs in a Full Count del Castillo will be off with the races from first kartini backs up at first base 3-2 ground ball pulled just fair glov by kartini takes it the first himself and the side is retired Diamond Backs get a run on your May sack fly time the stretch Diamond packs 10 Astros five owning a business [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] he [Music] [Music] the T sageing blue is like perfume deep in the heart inning Diamond Backs with a 10 to five lead over the Astros AJ Puck out for a second inning of work needed just 10 pitches in a one two 3 six top third of the order do up for the Astros starting with Altuve he had an RBI single in the fifth and scored himself 1 for three Outfield deep and straight away first pitch to Altuve and a swinging a Miss he thought for sure he was getting the fast ball he got the slider and was way out ahead of it so he started his last step back like that still got a hit Puck with the 01 and Altuve rifles this one in the left center field that's a base hit racing over to try and cut it off is McCarthy but he gets it on the warning track p and Altuve cruises in the second base with a double his 27th of the year maybe makes a keep doing that you can hit man that was an Astros extra base hit presented by Xfinity Next Generation 10g Network only from Xfinity the future starts now here's yordon Alvarez left on left matchup yon three for eight with two homers in his career off of puck he is 0 for two with the walk tonight first pitch and there's a strike on the outside corner at 97 part of what makes Puck so tough on lefties is that low arm angle that he has oh yeah and being six7 yep 01 swing and a miss at a slider away and it's quickly 0 and2 on yordon another left-handed hitter Kyle Tucker is up next that's why Puck is in the game right now Ryan Thompson right-hander is loosening in the Diamond bags bll pin here's the O2 swing and a dribbler foul off to the left on the slider away he gets a little higher on his on his breaking ball he he comes up a little higher and on his fast ball he drops down a little bit I'm sure yordon can pick that up Altuve the lead off second Astros down by five nobody out bottom of the seventh 02 and Alvarez pops it up on the infield playable for either or or Pomo Pomo makes the catch just to the right of second base and that is out number one altu stays put now it's up to Kyle Tucker he had a sack fly in the fifth inning it's also walked and reached on catches interference so he hasn't been charged with an official at bat yet today he has scored a run Tucker one for8 against Puck lifetime that one hit a homer another Lefton left matchup [Music] Tucker ready and waiting first pitch and that is a bit high for a ball pucka look back at second now the pitch breaking ball strike on the outside corner Tucker checked to swing but it didn't matter so back toback sliders to start off Kyle there a good one [Music] there here's a one-1 and there's another strike on the outside corner that time of the fast ball at 97 Astros with double barreled action in their Bullpen right-handers Nick Hernandez and Ryan Presley which and Ryan Thompson warming for Arizona here's a one-w and that misses down and Away with a slider it's two and two gregman on Deck he might see Thompson yeah I think you're right two a off second Puck looks at him now the two- two and that is strike three call on the outside corner Tucker doesn't like it but Lance Barrett got that right and Tucker goes down looking Puck's first strikeout there are two away tough pitch right [Music] there there's bregman he is time up in the fifth Puck's going to stay on and phase him rather than the righty Thompson pitch on the way and that's over for a strike with a slider nothing in one bregman two for seven with a double in his career off of Puck Astro saw a lot of puck when he was in the National League West with the A's 01 ground ball hits softly foul just wide of third and it's nothing in two 96 on that fast ball at the knees 02 driel foul off to the left came back with the slider still nothing and two Astros taking the first two games of this three-game series so already have the series win need to come from behind to get the series sweep yeah Astros have won six in a row at home 02 is high and it's one and two had a 10 game home winning streak in June and July that's their longest this year you isn't it funny though how we didn't win any games at home last year tables have turned yes there are one two breaking ball in the dirt did he go around he did says Jeremy rigs at first bregman not happy and he strikes out to in the inning so back-to-back strikeouts for Puck he throws two scoreless Works around altuve's lead off double and we go to the E Diamondbacks 10 Astros five at the crack of a bat track open above [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] 7.71 ra seven Innings eight hits a walk eight strikeouts face two three and four in the Diamondbacks order yordon Alvarez has come out of this ball game Jason Hayward is now playing right field and Chaz McCormack has moved over to left Alvarez popped out to second base in the bottom of the seventh so wonder if something happened to yordon first pitch to Pomo was outside for a ball that's obviously a bit alarming yeah let not let's not even think that way Pomo one for four with a single the one and that's over for a strike with a slider one and one Hernandez making his second appearance in this series he threw a 1 two 3 ninth inning to wrap up the Astros win on Friday night 1-1 and that's low two balls in a strike another good crowd on hand at minute made Park 34,1 154 the attendance for this Sunday night game the fans have been great they sure have the 2-1 and there's a strike with a breaking ball in the outside corner and it's two and two yeah that you he talked about the Astros not playing well at home last year it certainly wasn't because they didn't draw fans at home absolutely not last year the average the Astros had over 3 million fans for the first time since 2007 22 that's fouled back into the screen two and two still yeah just weird how it works you know everybody's trying to figure it out oh Astros can't play at home what is it what is it it's it's really nothing it's just SI it just you never know what you're going to get every year and it's got to be one of those things too baggy you don't want to make it bigger than it is exactly right the 2- two breaking ball and that's hammered but hooked foul into the seats down the right field line like as a player you're not going oh my God I can't hit here like we've been hitting pretty well here since 2000 I mean it's this is a good ball park to hit in um it just happens every once in a while yeah 22 and that is just off the outside corner a Full Count players probably wouldn't think about it much if at all if it weren't for the media always asking them questions about it yeah I mean you get an idea I mean sure of course but it was so egregious last year with the difference 3-2 and that's hit the other way and in the left Center a base hit Myers over quickly and Pomo at first with a leadoff single his second hit of the game that's the 13th hit for Arizona tonight tonight Jo Peterson he's reached three times a single a hit by pitch a walk he's also scored a run one for two tonight crowd has been pretty quiet much of the night that's what happens when home team goes down 8 nothing early like the Astros did first pitch and that's in there for a strike Justin Verlander had his first start ever as an astro in which he did not record a strikeout going three Innings charged with eight runs Hernandez the fourth reliever used by the Astros tonight the 01 and that's hit foul and out of playoff to the left it's nothing and two now to chck Peterson Astros start a series with the A's on Tuesday here at minimade Park off tomorrow 710 first pitch Tuesday and Wednesday 110 first pitch to wrap up the series with Oakland and the home stand on Thursday The o02 Swinging a Miss went after a head high fast ball Peterson not happy with himself for going after that one and that's the strikeout for Hernandez one away Spencer arti will pitch for the Astros on Tuesday against asalo BAU Terra GTI will look to bounce back after the rough outing in Cincinnati arti the August American League rookie of the month here's Josh Bell first pitch and there's a strike on the inside corner Bell one for four with a single and a run Wednesday night it'll be Hunter Brown against Lefty JP Sears and then for the Day game Thursday Lefty fber Valdez against Joey Estus 01 and bounces in there after tonight just 19 games remaining on the season for the Astros who have a magic number of 15 over Seattle to clinch the AL West Mariners with a 10 to4 win in St Louis this afternoon Mariners are off tomorrow as well they start a home stand on Tuesday and they start a series with San Diego 1-1 and that misses down it's two balls in a strike a slider we get a ground ball right here Rangers also won earlier today they beat the Angels 7 to four in Arlington that's who the Diamondbacks play next the Rangers the 2-1 hit foul back toward the screen two and two see uh White Sox beat Boston they did they were trailing late and then wound up turning it into a route scored five runs in the ninth White Sox won that one 7 to2 over the Red Sox 22 strike three call on the outside corner with a fast ball looked like he surprised Bell with the heater back-to-back strikeouts for Hernandez two out so the white socks with their win are now 33 and 111 now some of you may recall that the worst season in Astros history 2013 that's how many games the Astros loss 111 the white socks still have know 3 weeks left in the season there's Jake McCarthy Runner takes off the pitch is high throw down to Second by Diaz not nearly in time Peña tries to deak Pomo into thinking the ball got away but raldo Pomo doesn't fall for it and he picks up the stolen base as eighth and nine attempts on the year Diamond Backs leading 10 to5 we just took off early he did second time that's happened the 1 and that's hit in the left center field that's going to get down for a base hit pero round third and coming home McCormack with the throw home it's cut off RBI single for Jake McCarthy stolen base pays off for the Diamondbacks who lead 11 to5 Jake McCarthy his second hit reaches for the third time tonight so Arizona after the Astros had gotten to within four have been able to pick up runs in the seventh and now in the eighth yeah we had what little what momentum we had going um kind of lost it there with the two runs we just gave up he aeno Suarez three hits tonight and four at bats first pitch and Suarez lines it foul that'll slice into the seats off to the right strike one and then you think about you you talk about momentum you think about the bottom of the seventh Astros had the top third of the order up and weren't able to get any runs on the board now they were facing AJ Puck who certainly is no picnic no he's not throw over to first base and back with a dive goes McCarthy so now the Astros certainly are going to be paying more attention to McCarthy who has 21 Steals on the year [Music] o and one the count to [Music] Suarez Hernandez delivers there goes McCarthy pitches High thrown into second by Diaz the tag out McCarthy looked like he didn't get a very good jump Altuve applying the tag let's see if the Diamondbacks are going to challenge and they are not going to or are they let's see they haven't decided yet and they're got a challenge see if his foot got in there before the tag let me get some looks at it here on our monitor his foot might have gotten in there Arizona's challenging the uh the out call at second base it's close but maybe not enough to overturn it we'll see McCarthy with the bent leg slide did that left foot hit the bag before Altuve applied the tag as of now the inning is over but we'll hold the phone it's close it's extremely close I tend to think that McCarthy got in there but you know the call on the field was safe was out rather so you know you got to have convincing evidence to overturn that he looks safe to me but yeah yeah I think his foot is in there before Altuve appli as a tag I tend to believe that there's enough to overturn that but we've been surprised before yes we have Alonso Marquez the crew chief with Mark rieter on the headsets back to New York on the earpieces back to New York as we get some more looks at it on our monitor the crowd's pretty quiet because I think they're expecting this to go the Diamondback's way stands the runner is out wow and Arizona will lose the count well the Ash will take that yep so McCarthy caught stealing for just the sixth time in 27 attempts this year Diamondbacks get a run on McCarthy's RBI single and we go to the bottom of the eighth Diamondbacks 11 11 Astros 5 memberships for the 2024 buddy [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] up for your Houston Astros the catcher number 21 sker Diaz bottom of the eighth inning starting with the man on the mound side aring right-hander Ryan Thompson he'll face Jer Diaz who had an RBI single in the fifth Thompson delivers and Diaz rifles this over the head of gor and that'll drop in the center for a base hit so Jer Diaz gets the bottom of the eighth started on the right foot for the Astros are eighth hit of the game Randle gritch is now in the game in left field for Arizona paven Smith who has three homers tonight is now playing first base Thompson comes into this game with a 3.32 ER and 5 7 games 57 Innings 55 hits 13 walks 45 strikeouts for Thompson who started his professional career as an Astros farmand was a 23rd round pick of the Astros in 2014 first pitch of Jeremy Peña is down and in yeah he gets everybody right-handers out on his deception you know throws I don't know I think three quarters might be high yeah 1 oh and that misses inside it's two balls and no strike now you can see it in the strikeout not a ton of strikeouts just soft contact generally is what you're going to get from him native of Turner Oregon played collegiately at Campbell University in North Carolina 2 and there's a strike at the knees on the inside corner 90 mph on that fast ball the two seamer he went from Oregon to North Carolina apparently wow quite a trip spent a couple of years at a junior college in Oregon before winding up at Campbell 2-1 Chopper softly hit Third Base side tough play coming in Bear handing Suarez throw a first save Peña beats it out INF field hit for Jeremy his first hit of the night down to Second goes Diaz and now it's Victor kartini's turn he's 0 for three can't coach speed that's right he did everything right Suarez there still couldn't get Jeremy Jeremy textbook hitting the front first pitch that's in there for a strike so that's the way base running generally is taught yes you you want to hit first base when you're racing down the first try to beat out of throw with the going to hit the front part of the bat with the ball of your fo yep it's the quickest way there 01 and that is a little bit low and outside one and one you won't get hurt generally that [Music] way switch hitter batting left kartini yeah I mean even in the big leagues you'll see guys hit the middle of the base jump toward the base things like that but you want to hit that front part of the base with the ball of your foot running the first and as you know do not dive in first base yes 1-1 swing and a miss at a pitch running down and in vicious two seamer 1 and two and you said it yesterday that even though you know that as a player sometimes you just you can't help it you can't help it but yeah getting running through first base is much faster than diving to first base and less of a chance of injury 100% one two swing and a foul tip that's held on to by D Castillo a two seamer running down and in and kartini Strikes Out one away Myers is going to be called back to the Dugout and John Singleton will pinch hit for him Astros want a left-hander up against this right-handed side armor Singleton hitting 231 on the year 317 on base percentage 13 homers 36 runs batted in 13 homers match his career high which he did in 2014 so a chance to extend that with what remains of the season by the way Mauricio duban not starting for a second straight gain he jammed his left thumb sliding into first base like we were just talking about on Friday but Joe asot said he should be available tonight yeah that's just like I said you you're thinking you're going to get there faster but you just don't first pitch and Singleton swings through a two seamer down and Away nothing in one and generally what happens is the bigger the moment you see that the more more yeah if you're just running down and there's nobody on base or anything like that you're generally not diving into first here's the 01 and that's in the dirt it's a ball into [Music] strike Josh haer is up in the Astros Bullpen haer hasn't pitched since August 30th which is why he might get into this game yeah he's got to get some work in 11 to5 Arizona two on one out for the Astros bottom of the eth 1-1 swing play in a miss two see are running down and in and it's one and two you're a guy like me I've slid into first feet first really yeah because I'm out by two or three steps and I can see the balls being thrown inside the Baseline so I'm trying to slide underneath the tag that's only when you're slow out of the box says the guy with two 3030 Seasons I do but I don't get out of the box very fast I'm usually like a cork screw in there one two swing and a miss got him on a two seamer darting downward and Singleton Strikes Out back-to-back strikeouts for Thompson so two outs now still twoing on for Chaz McCormack who's two for three couple of singles and a run scored for [Music] McCormack that's yanner Diaz at second Jeremy Peña at first they started this inning with back-to-back hits pitch on the way breaking ball spins inside the 1 swing and a foul tip held on to by del Castillo pretty good Sinker from down there yep 6' 5 in tall Thompson delivers a 1-1 dribbled foul off to the left over by the Diamondbacks Dugout and it's 1 and two Diamond Backs Bullpen has had his issues particularly of late 24th in the majors in bullpen ER and the Astros have gotten runs off the Diamondbacks bullpen in each of the first two games of this series but haven't been able to do so tonight all five runs the Astros score charged to the starter Ryan Nelson who had an 8 nothing lead but didn't pitch long enough to qualify for the win went four and 2/3 Innings onew and McCormack lifts this in the left field that's down for a base hit stop sign given by Gary Pettis to Jer Diaz as gritch on that quickly and the Astros have loaded the bases with two out on that hit by McCormick and that brings up Altuve look this been a little interesting now so Jose Altuve comes to the plate two for four he doubled in the seventh also has an RBI single and a run scor tuve taking his time getting to the plate here to face Thompson fans get to their feet yeah they're hoping to see something big here Astros down by six Bas is loaded two out pitch on the way and that is off the plate away for a ball Altuve one for five with the bases loaded this year he has seven career Grand Slams which is tied for the most in Astro's history with Alex bregman and Carlos Lee got to get the ball up here it's tough guy to elevate the 1 swing and a miss at a two seamer and it's one and one that just disappeared sure did Justin Martinez the Diamondbacks closer is getting [Music] loose here's a 1-1 bounc to the back stop one and two that's Diaz at third Peña at second and McCormick at first for the Astros yordon Alvarez came out of the game in the eighth so Jason Hayward is on Deck still haven't gotten a reason as to why Alvarez Departed the onew way outside and a swing and a miss at a two seamer Altuve angrily throws his Bat and helmet down for chasing a pitch in the opposite batters box and the Astros leave them loaded three strikeouts in the inning for Thompson to make up for the three hits he allowed we go to the ninth inning Diamond packs 11 Astros 5 hey Houston Astros fans do you know an All-Star math teacher kico Phillips is teaming up with the Houston Astros to recognize Houston area matth [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] haer enters the ball game for Houston pitching for the first time since last Friday so for haer it's been nine days since he was last in a game which is why he's pitching down by six runs second in the American League with 29 saves 3.2 ad in 60 games 60 in the third Innings 35 hits 20 walks and 90 strikeouts for haer he'll face aeno Suarez to start things off Suarez is three for four with three singles an RBI and three run scored 11 runs 14 hits for Arizona five runs 10 hits for the Astros Diamond Backs have also been charged with an error first pitch swinging a Miss at a slider nothing in one Astros also have Mauricio duban now in left chz McCormick is in Center duban in after Myers was pinch hit for last inning that pitch bounces and off the glove of Diaz it's a 1-1 count especially with the off day tomorrow Astros didn't want hater to go too long without pitching and I'm sure hater didn't want to go too long without pitching the one-1 swing in a Miss got a fast ball by him downstairs and it's a one-w count haters last appearance last Friday against Kansas City he got the win after blowing just his second save chance of the year the onew and that is drilled deep to left Kiss It Goodbye aoo Suarez homers for the second straight day hit that over the landre Crawford boxes Suarez a four hit game and the Diamondbacks lead is 12 to5 Suarez going deep for the 26th time this here well that's the only bad part about coming and getting work would be good a home run home runs have been an issue for a hater that's the 11th home run he's allowed in just over 60 Innings this year well that's part of the reason why you get him in here to get some some work so he can be a little bit more precise on his location here's pav and Smith three homers tonight and eight RBI struck out his last time up in the seventh against Hector nerys Lefton left match up first pitch there's a strike on the outside corner with a slider nothing and one good depth on that slider right there the 01 swing and a miss another slider downstairs and it's nothing in two now to Smith O2 two that's highing Away Paul sewald right-hander is up in the Diamondbacks Bullpen so looks like he'll have the bottom of the ninth seeing him enough too this year hasn't been quite as good for sea Wald onew is outside and low that's why he's warming up to come and pitch a game his team's currently leading 12 to five 2 two and that misses is down that should have been a strike but it was not called as such and it's a 3-2 count 96 on that two seamer 3-2 outside ball four so Smith walks and Adrien del Castillo comes to the plate let's pause 10 seconds for station identification on the Houston Astros radio network tomorrow morning at 10 in-depth Astros conversation with Fleet and on your home of the stroll Sports so Josh haer losing the strike zone a little bit here six of his 11 pitches have been balls looking to get an out he's giving up a home run and a walk the pitch and did he go around on the pitch upstairs he did thank you very much Alonso Marquez down at third and it's one and one 1-1 swing in a Miss get slider running away from del Castillo one and two situations like this when you have your leverage reliever getting work in you don't want him to throw too many pitches one two that's H foul to the top of the screen one and two still no you don't um obviously you don't want to get into the 30s or anything like that right and it's not more about his AR it is about his arm it's about not getting hurt or anything like that one two that's high two and two but this is not abnormal for a leverage guy to pitch in a game where you're pretty much out of it not to be that sharp yeah it just works like that there's a reason Josh had so many saves in a row you know and they gave up a homer to not to break that but you know he doesn't give up too many blown saves when he's got this chance for actual save 22 is in the dirt with the slider with 3-2 count now to Dell Castillo and a lot of those you know home runs and stuff he gave up early in the year where we're either tied or behind uh you know he's had some issues with the Home Run Ball but when you pump fast balls that's what you're going to get sometimes 32 that's lifted in the center waiting for it McCormack now comes into a few steps and McCormack squeezes it for the first out Smith back to first base there's another left-handed here to Luis goret 0 for three with a sack fly it's just so difficult sometimes to just replicate that adrenaline it it just I've seen it I've seen it throughout my career yeah guys when they come in where it just doesn't have that adrenaline it's just different first pitch that's in there for a strike it's kind of like what you were talking about the other day about getting at bats in lopsided games where it's very easy to kind of give that a bat away cuz you're just not as focused 01 swing and a miss nothing in two it's not because you know someone's lack aicle or no no no it's just like it's just the competition part now on the flip side if you're if you're a young hitter and you're facing Josh hater your adrenaline's a little high oh yeah you know what I mean the 02 and that's whacked foul into the net down the left field line nothing in two still to gor you know when I was working in the minor leagues that's something that guys would talk about when you know Stars would come down star pitchers would come down to make rehab starts they get killed or they'd give up to a home run to someone you never heard of right exactly 02 that's hit foul back into the screen nothing in two still they did that one my first year when I was with the Astros they brought a couple guys down when I first got down there it might have been I forgot what it was maybe it was an instruction we oh you know what I was with the Red Sox and we came over and faced some guys with the with the uh with the Astros with the Astros and we killed him Portugal was one of them I think um 02 and that is a little bit low uh kerfell came in uh we I mean we just tore them up they're like Portugal's like he's waving a white flag he's like I'm out of here I can't set any of these guys up [Music] nothing here's a onew that's hit fouling out of playoff to the left yeah situation with those guys they're just trying to get ready for their season just trying to get working and meanwhile you guys you know you're you're looking at this as an opportunity to show you belong in the big we bust all the way over from Winter hav Florida for some game that those big leers were pitching in you know in the back fields the one two ground ball chopped right side fielded by kartini tags the runner and then goes to first for the out nice play by kartini un assisted double play tagging Smith and then tagging the base home run for Suarez we go to the bottom of the ninth Diamond Backs 12 Astros 5 and we're back with the action Coke Zero sugar [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] wall was the Diamondbacks closer has 16 saves this year but lost that role to Justin Martinez with some struggles 4.19 RA in 41 games this year 38 and 2/3 Innings 33 hits 10 walks and 41 strikeouts for sea Wald who last year had a career-high 34 saves between the Mariners and Diamondbacks big part of Arizona's run to the World Series Jason Hayward leads it off first pitch is outside for a ball missed with a fast ball at 90 mph Hayward entered the game in the eighth inning he's an Alvarez's spot I haven't heard yet as to why Alvarez came out when he did the 1 and there's a strike one and one Hayward hitting 203 in 71 games this year 283 on base percentage six homers 30 RBI two for 14 in eight games with the Astros 1-1 way outside two balls in a strike seaw wall replaces Ryan Thompson who allowed three hits but struck out three batters the 2-1 that is outside because starter Ryan Nelson did not go five innings it's the official scor's discretion as to who gets the win assuming the Diamondbacks hold on here probably give it to AJ Puck 3-1 that's strike on the outside corner oh that was horrible that's terrible that was way off the plate outside Jason Hayward was making a turn toward it first and now making his way back to the Box having a conversation with Lance Barrett he's got every right to do that that's his at bat it means a lot mhm you got a bear down [Music] here here's a 3-2 swinging a Miss fast ball away and Hayward has more words for Lance Barrett as he makes his way back to the first base Dugout boy is that frustrating sure is one away cuz he forces him to swing at that pitch and I'm sure that's what he said to Barrett something to that effect yeah you you know I've heard before you know that's your at bat well at the end of the day actually it's yours so that's what stinks about it yeah Kyle Tucker at the plate sack fly in the fifth 0 for one tonight first pitch is a strike at the knees on the inside corner Tucker also walked and reached on catcher interference and scored a run Astros are down8 nothing got it to within 95 but Diamondbacks have scored three unanswered 01 Tucker pops it foul and out of play off to the left nothing in two Shay witam has moved on Deck to hit for bregman Astros down 12 to five in the ninth two- strike pitch and that is just inside could have been called a strike but it was not one and two most of this crowd of more than 34,000 is decided to spend the rest of their evening elsewhere one two and that's lifted shallow left field racing in git chuk and that's going to dunk in for a base hit so Kyle Tucker gets his first Hit Upon returning from the injured list on Friday that'll get a nice cheer from the folks Who Remain the Astros 11th hit of the game and now Shay Whit in 15 games 325 on base percentage no homers and four RBI sea wall delivers breaking ball strike Diamond back's not bothering to hold on Tucker here yeah tuck he just coming back off an injury he probably don't feel like running yeah the 01 broken backgrounded foul off to the right piece of the barrel flying off and up the third Baseline and wiam headed back to the Dugout for a new one it's nothing in two and two bats were brought to him neither of them were the one he wanted so he pointed to another one and now has that bat give me out two his Bat he's got hits there W him just now making his way back to the Box Tucker at first one out bottom of the ninth 12 to five [Music] Arizona Mariners won earlier so barring a comeback the Astros are two outs away from seeing their division lead trimmed to four and a half games here's the 02 and witam hits it high in the air pretty deep to left Center but this is playable waiting for it gritch makes the catch on the edge of the warning track and the Astros are down to their final out Tucker back to first [Music] base Jer Diaz to the plate he's two for four RBI single back in the fifth inning 90 mph doesn't throw hard seaal but gets good back spin on the ball he used to be 92 93 here and there though sure uh these are one of these at bats right here too like we talked about before 01 breaking ball and that's lifted down the right field line long run back for Carrol he reached just can't get it off his glove hits Off the Wall Tucker he's around third and he will score Diaz in the second base with an RBI double it is 12-6 Arizona well it was good to see two things there one gner getting another hit in a double uh the other part is watching tuck run and you could tell Tucker was not running 100% not 100% but not running like oh my God you know what I mean yeah it wasn't terrible so that'll be that' be a good test see how he felt see what everybody says you know when he gets back in the Dugout how that felt so Yer with his third hit and second RBI of the night there's Jeremy Peña first pitch and that's fouled back into the screen nothing in one and it's good mentally for him you know to see you know to feel what he can do could he push it more does he need to back off things like that yeah sometimes you just don't know until its game Speed game speed is totally different we can go out in Cincinnati all we want and sit watch him run but until he actually does it in the game now the intensity wasn't there because of the type of game it is but still 01 and that's rocket it down the right field line slicing foul by about 3 fet nothing in two Astros down to their final [Music] strike yeah sometimes you need to be forced to do something in a game situation before you can maybe overcome a mental hurdle right and if it just maybe if it's just sore okay what ever that's fine but yeah you're right it's all inside your head and your body of what it feels like here's E2 and that is strike three call on the outside corner and that is the ball game the Arizona Diamondbacks avoid getting swept in Houston as Arizona wins tonight 12-6 Astros lead in the alss now 4 and 1 half games we'll be back with the Gallery Furniture post game show after this when you drive a vehicle so reliable it's backed by a 10-year e for
