Training Camp UPDATES - Should you draft NICK CHUBB??? - A Doctor's Take

Intro yo what's going on headliner Nation it's your boy the doc and we have a jam-packed episode to get into today I asked you guys last week for some questions about injuries that you had for players that you're thinking about drafting you guys delivered so I picked my five favorite comments from last week's video to answer today on this week's video hopefully you guys enjoy that conversation but before we get into it we got to talk about some of the training camp news that has dropped from an injury perspective and some that's just more updates on players coming back from injury so let's get into it all right so we're only a week into training camp we have had a few players suffer season ending injuries already I've listed them up on the screen most of these guys are defensive players but the biggest name from an offensive perspective is probably Lions kicker Michael Badgley he was supposed to be the starter for them he tore his hamstring in training camp so he is now done for the year which opens up a spot for a high power kicker to come in and potentially produce for your fantasy teams on a pretty good offense but no Michael Badgley so we're looking now for who is going to be the kicker for the Lions we don't know that yet but I imagine in the next couple weeks they will pick a guy and go with him heading into the season all right next up we got Training Camp Injuries some training camp injuries that I'm just kind of keeping an eye on right now running back Joe Mixon deal with a hamstring strain has not practiced a lot yet so far to start training camp hamstring strains can be a little tricky R they think he'll be back before week one but again just something we're keeping an eye on in case things don't go the way that they plan Jets quarterback Aaron roders is not expected to play much at all in the preseason we might see him for a series but he's coming off that ail's injury I would not be surprised if they shut him down for the entire preseason no sense in risking him coming back in a preseason game we know who Aaron roders is at this point Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson dealing with a calf strain has not had a lot of time to practice with the ones yet this is opening up the door for Justin fields to get a chance to run a ton of reps with the first team offense and we've actually seen the Steelers get into a fight over a late hit on Justin field so clearly the team is starting to Rally a little bit around him worry about Russell Wilson being kind of an interesting cat I don't know if he really connects to the players on his team as well as a guy like Justin Fields who really has everything to lose if he doesn't win this quarterback battle he's fighting for a big big time contract and I wouldn't be surprised if he is gaining a lot of support within the team with these reps he's so far looked pretty solid in the practices that I have been able to see people reporting on so again opening the door with this Russell Wilson calf injury for Justin fields to maybe take control of that quarterback room Steelers rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson dealing with an ankle sprain they expect him to miss multiple weeks but he could still be back by week one I don't really draft players especially rookies that Miss chunks of training camp with injuries but Roman Wilson apparently did look good before he went down with this injury Chiefs wide receiver SL running back SL kick returner cadarius Tony has an ankle injury New Year same cadarius Tony we're not really trusting him for more than just maybe if you have a lot of kickoff return points or something like that he's just very unreliable from a lower body injury perspective and then the 49ers have a couple guys worth mentioning uh wide receiver Jacob coing a rookie deal with a hamstring strain their running back rookie Isaac gindo also dealing with the hamstring strain of the two gindo sounds like it's more serious so if you were planning on picking those guys up or looking at them on your Dynasty rosters they're probably worth stashing at this point I don't expect either of them to really make a huge Splash for the 49ers this season PUP NFI all right guys next up we got the list of guys that have been cleared off the pup or NFI list and are back practicing really the biggest surprise here is Cowboys cornerback Trayvon Diggs coming off the ACL te most of the guys that tore their ACL last season are still on these lists so it's good to see him back and practicing already 49ers wide receiver rookie peaw coming off the hamstring strain a couple rookie tight ends Eric all Theo Johnson both those guys back practicing now good to see that if you like to take a deep shot at tight end I don't mind either one of those guys and then Green Bay wide receiver Jaden Reed and Saints wide receiver Chris o lave both started on the pup or NFI list and both of those guys got cleared pretty much immediately so it doesn't look like they were dealing with anything too serious all Nick Hockinson right guys let's get into the questions that you guys asked in last week's comment section first up we got Nick meany 8542 I love your commentary on Hockinson do you think that if he were to come back week seven would he have any limitations on minutes or snaps so last week I talked about TJ hackinson and how I projected that if he starts on the pup week seven seems to make the most sense for him with the team going to London in week five and them having a week six by week seven seems to be the most likely option for them to bring him back midseason I do think that you have to remember with an ACL tear that return to production typically takes 12 full months he tore his ACL and MCL in week 16 so yeah even if he comes back in week S I would not expect him to be at pre-injury production even though he's had enough time to recover from the ACL it takes more time to actually ramp up once they're playing again you're probably looking more at like week 10 through 12 before you get real production out of TJ hackinson not really someone I'm super keen on buying into in fantasy drafts again we could be wrong he could get taken off the pup but so far nothing really shows any signs of him getting off of the pup early it looks like he's most likely going to miss those first four weeks and then it's really about when do they think they can bring him back next question Javon Williams from Allan Chang 162 thanks for the work doc what do you think of gavon Williams injury from two years ago should he be doing better than last season medically so gavon Williams had a very complex ACL tear if anyone was following the channel you know that we were out out out on jav Williams last year because of the complexity of his ACL injury now so far what I've seen is he came into training camp healthy he's been producing I don't like that the team drafted another running back it seems like Shawn pyton may not be 100% sold on javante Williams being much more than a pass catching back but we know that b Nicks really likes to check down to the running backs on screenplay so he could still see quite a bit of work as of medically he should be much better this year than he was last year and I'm not like totally against him this year so I guess that is an improvement from a fantasy take perspective I don't hate drafting Javon Williams as your rb4 five somewhere around there especially in leagues that give you PPR bonuses for him catching a bunch of passes next question here from Christian Watson sport dog 1000 can you explain what was done to Christian Watson in regards to his problem with recurring hamstring issues if he gets through training camp and preseason would you draft him so Christian Watson had a pretty significant side to side difference from a hamstring strength perspective so we can actually measure hamstring strength with a machine where basically you pull and you compare side to side how strong and how much force you're creating with that hamstring they found about a 20% difference on the right side compared to the left side in terms of his strength so the side he keeps recurring with this hamstring injury on has a significant weakness compared to the other side when we're talking about why it's happening typically once you've injured a muscle like a hamstring you have a forc production deficit on that side and if you're not really training with somebody that's specifically looking for that strength deficit you don't really train isometrically on that side so even though you're doing a lot of strength training as an NFL athlete you're not single leg training very often and so what he's done this off season is worked with a trainer specifically on equalizing those two legs so that hopefully he doesn't have these hamstring issues going forward if he's healthy through training camp in preseason yeah I mean I'm not afraid to draft Christian Watson at his current price I like him a lot more as like my wide receiver four in case I can throw him in on a bye uh for another guy somewhere where I can get a lot of upside for my for my wide receiver four position I don't hate it for Christian Watson but as far as like what he's doing he's mostly just single leg training trying to get that equalized from side to side so he doesn't have a major deficit on one side compared to the other all right our next question comes from James R how he's got a little icon next to his name that's cuz he's joined our exclusive headliner Nation Discord hit that join button down below if you want access to us year round for your fantasy team we give advice on there each and every day I do injury updates every single Sunday on the Discord so make sure if you haven't already hit the join button become an exclusive member of headliner Nation but James as thanks Doc appreciate your hard work with CD Lam holding out does that make him more likely to suffer an injury due to lack of conditioning or practice now this is actually a great question from James because it's not something we really think about when guys are holding out I dug up a little bit of research and there's a few guys that have actually looked into injury risk for guys that hold out for more than 10 days the study showed that 42 players have held out of training camp for over 10 days and of the 42 11 of them actually suffered a season ending injury at some point during the year which is right around 25ish per a little bit more than that actually and that is not typical of an NFL season you might think well lots of guys end up on the IR the studies that we have done on player averages for teams missing uh and being placed on IR is about three out of 50 players for each NFL team so roughly about 6% of the time do guys miss significant chunks of the Season due to injury on NFL team so of those 42 Seasons having 11 of them have a significant injury that led to an IR stint is a pretty considerable difference side to side now that's not to say that CD lamb is doomed to have an injury this year but it is something that we're going to pay attention to as he misses more and more time in training camp and it's something that we can look back on if and injury occurs and go H we should have probably been more concerned about CD lamb going forward but as of right now I'm not crazy concerned we're still very early in training camp cidd lamb is a pretty young and healthy wide receiver overall in his career there's no indicators outside of his hold out that he would be at any increased risk for injury this season so I'm still perfectly happy drafting CD lamb understanding that injuries happen and it's not something that you can predict with a 100% certainty all right last Nick Chubb question probably the guy I get the most questions about in the comments each and every video this one comes from Anthony lisapo 9185 what's the status on Nick chub's injury thanks so not a lot of great news coming out of Browns Camp as far as Nick chub being ready for the start of the Season there's not a lot of optimism that he's going to be ready by week one there are videos of him lifting a ton of weight again doesn't really tell us much about where he's at from a recovery standpoint haven't seen him really running or cutting at all so far a a few videos of him jogging but not anything that would indicate that he is ready to be a Bellow in the NFL so Nick chub again not a guy that I'm really buying a whole lot of in my drafts right now I think there's a good chance that he starts the year on the pup and I just don't really see an opportunity for him to be the Bell cow that he was coming off of that major knee injury last season it just doesn't really seem like it's in the cards form especially with Jerome Ford playing well and getting a ton of reps right now as the teams rb1 I just don't see how Nick chub is going to step in and be an immediate producer for your fantasy team I think he could still have a good second half of the season but are you willing to wait for multiple weeks for him to actually give you that me personally I don't like to waste weeks on guys that are not going to be ready to start the season especially at Cost I'm going to let somebody else take that risk hold on to him all through the first month maybe two months of the season and I'm going to pick somebody that I think is going to give me value for my fantasy team from week one because you got to start racking up those wins early you can't Bank on a guy being 100% that doesn't start the year perfectly healthy it's just not a very good way to win fantasy championships you got to get those wins early try to get those by weeks in for your fantasy playoffs and then just let somebody else deal with the headache that is Nick chub this season all right guys that's it for the injury update show hopefully you enjoyed this format where I answer questions if you liked it let me know in the comments down below leave those questions I'm going to try to answer as many of them as I can and you never know I might actually answer a few more of them in next week's injury update show appreciate you guys liking and subscribing to the channel and we'll see you guys next week [Music]
