[Music] welcome everyone to Ames Iowa home of Iowa State and these Cyclones have been looking to gather strength all morning long we've got a sensational matchup for you fans have been filing in and getting ready for this game as we'll see a squad from the back the Eastern Michigan Eagles taking on a team from the Big 12 the Iowa State Cyclones glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm Reese Davis David Po and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to tee it [Music] up and the Cyclones will get this season underway as Co meet leather and and they thought about a return Then thought better of it they'll bring it out to the 25 so Eastern Michigan's offense takes the field to start this game off here he comes and obviously a defense is always going to be aware of a quarterback but boy he finds a way to put defenses on their heels all the time David I mean what can't he do he's got the weapons he's got the confidence he's got the experience Jesse these kind of guys are and the pass is intercepted and the senior just snatched the ball out of the air and gave it back to his offense that's kind of a double Landing for this offense because on their opening drive not only did they turn it over with the interception but they've Now set their defense up in a really tough spot deep in their own end line gets set first [Applause] down looking to move it through the air fires downfield nice def defensive play to get a hand in there and knock it away they'll try again on second down after the incompletion from the gun the running back has it how much ler is this guy going to leave on the deck as he gets it down to the 25 balls out the 25 they're in field goal range but they love to convert this third and short quick completion on the out and he'll go down but he has enough for the first down the Cyclones come to the line with a fresh set of downs they'll throw it on first down oh and it's a pick he threw it right into the double coverage and they'll close in on him after a good return on the interception offense set on first [Applause] down looking for a man it's Snider throwing right complete downfield defense on skates that time they finally drag him down at the 42 they used the chunk plate across Midfield and they've got it first and 10 just outside the 40 he's looking to throw it gets it out quickly and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pickup they'll start this one from the 29 on first down going to the running game they pick up half of it it'll be second and five so guys over the last few years there have been seismic changes to college football realignment they image lightness but one of the biggest changes the transfer portal yeah and now guys that are unhappy are in a situation where they see something that they'd rather got some room enter into the goal line he's run out of bounds after the big game and they are in business first and goal new center Downs right on the doorstep for this offense they try to power it in and he takes it to the house touchdown Eagles lining up to tack one more onto that lead Precision blocking up front created the open Lane and the running back followed it beautifully yeah and it's pretty easy to follow an offensive line that makes those holes and just gives you a caravan all the way to the end zone what an unbelievable job blocking up front here he comes from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Iowa State sending the offense back out quarterback extends the play pulls it in it's Higgins and that throw was a bullet by the quarterback on that curl route in zone coverage and how about the anticipation he gets rid of this pass before his receiver is even turned around I love it keep and the quarterback goes down at the 11 yd line you make up the game plan and not a lot on the play sheet for this third and long from inside their own 20 fires to the tight end and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker this could absolutely spin this game in another Direction they're going for it inside their own 30 that's caught it's alustin he's not going to get there stop short on fourth down looking for a productive play on first down he wants to throw he makes a catch he was working his way toward that goal line they'll stop him at the two after the big play up top Eastern Michigan will line up with a first and goal movement here from the tight end they'll dial up the run on first and goal and to the touchdown Eagles yeah and now this offense building that lead it's still the first half but I tell you what shown some glimp of why they could become a really really good offense listen you go into halftime more of the same right continue to do what you're doing take care of the football this offense has looked really good in the first half not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair catch Iowa state has the ball back the Cyclones ready to go on offense to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing on all six cylinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up yeah and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or that scheme that you can use against this defense he's R out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down use the play fake now to throw quarterback feeling that pressure and he's knocked down at the 42 negative play on first down that's what a defense always wants he wants to throw here on second down finds a man on the left and it is a chunk play a huge gain on that one before the defense brings it to an end they'll throw it from the Red Zone buying some tie DOD some room headed to the goal line they'll finally get him stopped at the one yd line what a run there this offense in scoring position with a fresh set and he takes it in for the score touchdown cyclone and the offense finds a way to cut into this lead they still have plenty of work to do they do but that's a big score you don't want to get late and start getting in the second half when you fight to come back by so many points so great job getting points get that momentum back on your side so you can come out and do some good things when you get the ball next time that ball skips through the end zone it's a Touchback and they'll take over at the 25 yd line plenty of time for one more snap before the end of the quarter pulled and fired complete they make the Stop and that'll bring the first quarter to a close that's the end of the quarter and Eastern Michigan has the lead guys let's have a look at the stats as we've played one period we'll start the quarter offense about to snap it on second [Applause] down they'll try the run and he's got enough for the first down it'll be at the 35 here's this offense with a fresh set of downs might as well run him until they stop him he's got it again cre good after on that one to work his way up to the 42 got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four going over the top makes the catch down the right side they just gash the defense on that one they've got it down to the 23 the eagles look to keep this drive [Applause] humming now on the counter got enough space and he Sprints to the end zone touchdown Eastern Michigan they may have to give this guy a homestead exemption In The End Zone he spent so much time in there and we're not even at halftime I i' I've lost count I I don't know that's probably on your stat sheet in front of you but goodness gracious that's at least three that I that I can remember so he's having a heck of a day and it'll be a Touchback the ball will come out to the 25 yd line Iowa State sending the offense back out now we'll get a chance to see if they can answer that last score trailing by 14 Jesse Yeah and at this point of the game I feel like offensively you should go back to what's been working for you in this game don't be afraid to dial up plays that you've already had success with running it and throwing it it's okay to repeat plays down 14 at this point and I would also say Palmer kind of understanding that my defense is not playing great so a shot toward the end zone was open he had it and he dropped it would have been a touchdown instead it's second down let's see if they go back to the air on second down that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum off the play fake and the defense gets to the quarterback what a great job by this defense the tone early in the first half they've been hitting the quarterback early and often make him feel uncomfortable make him feel that pressure keep getting him on the ground that's why theyve built a lead he's got it and they convert they'll Mark him down right there but it is a big play and they'll move the chains and the Cyclones will snap it on First and 10 gets it out fast stopped just inside the 30 and the 29 it's a 10yd pickup and a first first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs the sweet feet keeping the Play Alive it's incomplete good job by the defense sticking with its coverage after they couldn't connect it's second and 10 he's looking to throw deep shot for the end zone and he's got it touchdown IA stake and I tell you what that passing touchdown man that should spark this whole team like The Comeback is more than on now like they got the touchdown they cut into the lead you want to get a stop and go into the half get all the juices all the excitement and be like listen the passing game's rolling we got this The Comebacks in full effect he'll start the return inside is five good job by the coverage unit to put a stop to that return Eastern Michigan takes over as the offense heads to the field these two defenses have had their head spinning here in the first half and now we might even see a little more scoring with this drive it's going back and forth this is like two heavyweights just trading blows David what do this defense got to do to get a stop here I I tell you what man when you're giving up points like this and you've got no momentum you got to find somebody that can make a play to create something and listen if you're if they're scoring anyways let's be aggressive let's Blitz more let's let's make sure we're making them feel discomfort in some way shape or form catch in the middle it's Mitchell and they finally haul him down but not before the good catch and run the offense getting set for a first down from the 45 that's enough he's going to pass fires to the wide out working that left side and he's brought down after a nice game from inside the 40 at the 37 it's first down looking to move it through the air it's incomplete and he's lucky to get that one back almost intercepted second down coming up off play action strong pass rush gets to the quarterback and they get him at the 46 the offense quickly calls timeout to stop the clock on Third and long doesn't need to take the check down and this defense is bringing the heat another sack there's a Timeout on the field tight game here late in the first half Eastern Michigan will be forced to punt first time we've seen their punt team this [Applause] afternoon the punt goes out of bounds and a nice job to get them backed up I think they'll Spott it right around the 15 first down for this offense he's looking to throw it fires on the move and this will be incomplete a big hit there for second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again he's looking for a man on second down he's got it down the right side ripped off a huge chunk play on that one as he gets the first down before he steps out of bounds the explosive play set the table now they got to serve the feast and he takes it to the house touchdown cyclone and I love that this offense stuck to it stuck to the Run game didn't Panic they got down but they answered the Bell right before the half and they got this thing right where they wanted now they can tie this football game and hopefully go into the half with a lot of momentum looking for an alley from inside his own 10 and he did a good job bobbing and weaving and finding a little bit of Running Room on that return offense getting set for first down looking to throw it's Snider and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down time dwindling away as they try to put points on the board right before the half lost to fire on second down it's complete and he was loose and out the gate and doesn't go down until he gets to the 48 yd line he'll come out throwing on first down got him downfield across the 25 he's got room a huge gain on that one before he ran out of bounds and he has the first down and in the final seconds of the first half they'll send out the field goal unit no no good and here in the second quarter Miss field goal leades his tied guys Eastern Michigan will kick it deep to start the second half he thought about bringing that out for a half second but he'll take a knee and they'll bring it to the 25 Iowa state has the ball back the Cyclones ready to go on offense first drive of the second half always fun to watch you see what type of tweaks were made at the half especially when you're locked up in a ball game like this one yeah and it's been a good game I mean it's been a little bit of back and forth in a feeling out process and now once you get to the second half who's going to get aggressive Palmer who's going to take some shots try to make some plays and really go for it yeah it's interesting I think as play callers right now you learn a lot about these coaching staffs with respect to who does make the best adjustments there's a lot of coaches that believe we're just going to be who we are we're going to keep doing what we do we're just going to do it better but then there are others that tweak things a little bit on offense and on defense'll find out here and just wedges it ahead a bit before he's brought down I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physical you hear it a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it the Cyclones have it with a first and 10 we they'll go to the ground and he's able to find a little bit of Running Room before they get him down after the nyd pickup on first down here's second and one they'll test the right side and the Cyclones have a first down all right nothing flashy there he just did what it took to get the first down offense has it at the 28 on first down he wants to throw starting to feel a little pressure trying to escape and get it himself he found a little opening and got loose they couldn't stop him in the back field so a solid pick up there On The Run it's Lee there to make the tackle and with that we'll head to the fourth [Applause] [Music] quarter we've been treated to an aerial show by these two guys so far as you check out their numbers they'll try to open the quarter by cashing in on this big opportunity deep in the Red Zone with the run on first and goal and how about that interior defense stuffing the run for nothing and the D deny them on second and [Applause] goal someone moved a little early and the offense will go backward false start off so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty can the defense stop them again on second and goal he looking to throw extending the play makes the grab goes out of bounds just short of the goal line and they'll be set up and in great position here if they can pay off this third and goal opportunity man oh man touchdown Iowa State and they grab the advantage taking the lead here in the fourth the extra point is good and now in the fourth they're up by a touchdown and an extra point the kickoff team out there getting set score Iowa State the ball bounces through the end zone and it will be a Touchback a first down for the [Applause] offense he's going to pass fires to the middle all kinds of room to throw that one in there and he almost ran away from everybody on that one a huge pick up on that play looking downfield it's Snider unloads to the white out makes a connection and a pickup of better than 30 yards on that completion before the defense brings him down big drive for this offens leate trying to tie the game they pieced together a couple of first downs and here they come again he made the first guy Miss but there were too many dudes coming to help and they stopped him behind the line after losing a couple on the that last play here second and 12 he's looking to throw just a short pass to the tight end they stop him almost immediately short game there and still a little ground cover to pick up the first and if you didn't know this was a big play the crowd is telling you a huge third down caught behind the line it's Mitchell he's there to make the stop but not before he sets up this off it's first and goal from the seven and guys if they can make their way into the end zone we'll have a tie game in the fourth and the stage will be set for a great finish he just about put this game away if he'd been able to hold on to that one instead it's second down he'll run it up the middle trying to pick it way to the end zone and they try to run inside and there is nowhere to go it's still third and goal from the gun wants to pass that ball is intercepted at the goal line and he's brought down to this defense gets the ball back to it own first and 10 from inside their own five you got to take care of the ball but there is room to take a shot here timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible you got to believe they just want to run it take care of the football and keep that clock moving on second and nine quick out called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense out of the shotgun on third down throws for the tight end he's got it defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense the Cyclones will snap it on First and 10 good pick up on that play it'll bring up second and four kept it on the ground on first down now back to the line looking for a crease it's Lee really nice stop there from this senior leader and that last run leaves him with a third down will they keep it on the ground and that's exactly what I want from my offense like listen they're out of timeouts I want this clock to tick now we have seen some college coaches across college football continue to run the football and also give up the football and give a gift to the other team this one's over if I just take a knee they get a big win here and start the season on a positive note you got to love that as the players you come out you have so much anticipation coming into the season finally getting ready to play in front of a live audience you're able to come out and execute and get this win under your belt David couldn't be a better way to start the year and for the losing team obviously it's a little bit different you have something to look at now to analyze where do I need to get a little bit better but plenty of time still left in
