first story seemingly experienced contractor named Tom turns out to be an EPT causing chaos and ultimately losing his job due to his inability to handle basic tasks and interpersonal conflicts the Second Story frustrated by A bank's arrogant savings plan a grand father used malicious compliance to exploit the system resulting in unexpected gains from the bank's stupidity and arrogance the third story employee refusing to assist customers as stalking was his primary task leading to a confrontational conversation and a change in approach today's first story is the story of the a-hole colleague so I work in it on a help desk for the NHS and we're a little short staffed this is an issue because the people phoning us are doctor and nurses trying to access patient records write up treatment plans update medication Etc it's pretty essential they have access to their computers and that their computers are working so as a result we're not a log and flog desk where you write down the issue until the caller someone will get back to them next week we're expected to have enough technical knowledge to fix the majority of issues over the phone when possible so short staffed as a result of this we hired a contractor we intentionally chose a higher rate of pay because we wanted to recruit and EXP experienced person who could hit the ground running interviewed several candidates and eventually hired Tom Tom who says he's been working in it for several years and has worked on call desks before Tom who after a week at emerges has never logged a call in his life doesn't understand the concept of save doesn't understand that when creating a ticket you have to describe the issue Tom who is actually a drain on the desk because even 3 weeks down the line someone has to be constantly sat with him not Manning their own phone because he needs help with every call this is why we wanted someone experienced someone who would take a few days to get up to speed with the local environment but at least knows the difference between a computer mouse and his own a-hole I don't have an issue with a person asking questions and have trained several people but when you represent yourself as a seasoned it contractor with experience in this industry I don't expect to have to tell you that your machine is running Windows how to find out whether your machine is 64 or 32bit and that this is relevant when picking the correct version of software and drivers to download eventually my colleague Charlie has had enough a user has phoned up and shouted at Charlie for 10 minutes because of a call Tom logged Tom spent an hour with the person on the phone and all he wrote down was the word printer and its asset tag no mention of any issues no troubleshooting no detail at all Charlie fixes the issue in 2 minutes machine hosting printer was not switched on and then asked to speak to Tom about the call Tom lies to Charlie's face and first of all says he didn't take the call then says that he remembers that the user could not connect to the printer he does not listen and what started as a constructive conversation about what to do next time ends up in a yelling match with Charlie asking Tom if he'd ever worked on a service desk and that his work is missing basic details and is not good enough said what we were all thinking frankly boss doesn't stop it because he agrees Tom then goes to complain to boss boss then calls me into his office and says as well as Tom having an issue with Charlie Tom also thinks I speak to him rudely now I've never said a bad word to Tom I've tried to help him so many times and assist him with almost every all this upsets me a lot and on the way home I cry and question whether I really am a bad person and just don't know it I decide that if Tom doesn't like the way I talk to him I won't talk to him no more help for the person getting paid more than me who thinks I'm a bee anyway a week later when his call Quality is dramatically dropped due to my not helping him anymore several user complaints and escalations to directors about poor service Tom gets let go oh well what a shame so sorry to see him go if only I could have spoken to him to tell him that the second story is malicious compliance to A bank's arrogant Savings Plan had to deal with a bank today and got pretty mad with their stupid procedures and bureaucracy not the people that serve me I literally started thinking about Petty compliance to one of the topics and how well banks have protected themselves with legal documents and I remembered this golden story from my grandfather may he rest in peace couple clarifications a will'll use the symbol money when referring to money for ease but this is on a local current curency B the story is a fairly long way back in time C back then salaries monthly would range between $17 up to $350 stretching the upper end a bit The Story So my grandfather was at a point in his life with a wife and a couple of young kids settled in an apartment and was working in a factory and painting houses he was working more than 28 hour jobs 6 days a week to provide as well as save money for the future and for the kids and as it ended up the grandkids as well so with about a double income he was managing to put some money on the side each month he had gone to one of the local banks and opened up a savings account with a healthy interest different times he put in some money about $5,000 and left it to grow a year later he went in to put in some more money in start a new plan for another year and the guy told him to go with one of their new plans where the interest was 2.5% up from under 2% on the normal end ofe paying plan he had and this new plan was paying every day the interest as well as he could add money each month mon instead of once a year before starting a new plan according to Grandpa even the fine print didn't seem to have any negatives so he went with it about $7,000 at that point 3 to four months go by and he goes in to add some money to the account and asks for the account movements to be updated back then you add a booklet that they put in an old style printer and it would add only what was not already printed brand new tech back then he gets his print out and its 4 months of daily plus interest added when you do the math 7,000 * 0.025 divided 365 you get about 48 cents per day that was not being paid he asked why after 4 months of daily payments his deposit was still the same and the clerk smirked back that the amount was too small the system was not calculating sents just whole numbers so with his amount being 7K his daily payment was 48 cents rounded to zero he went to the director of the bank office and mentioned everything together with the fact that for over a 100 days the bank had been keeping for itself 50 cents per day and how was that allowed because it was robbing the customers and the director just responded with in our bank individual offices have the right to operate semi-independently this is why we're able to offer such a competitive interest rate whilst our bank doesn't offer it officially we're allowed to set some rules for ourselves if you don't like feel free to change your position change your position meaning not be so poor according to my grandfather he was Furious and just stood up and left went back home and read all the fine prints of the contract again only to find the information so vaguely written that it could have been about weather temperature calculations the malicious compliance he read it once more and 2 days later he went back to that office Bank he added some money to get the amount to 7450 and left no complaints nothing he went back 4 days later to update his booklet with recent account movements and the system was paying $1 every day since he confirmed this he went to the other Banks he had accounts he was a smart man and did not want to keep all his money in one place but now he was on a Revenge Mission he took out all his money from the other Banks and went back and opened up two more accounts with that exact same amount he also got the bank to pay those interest payments in a separate account making sure the amount was just right at $74.50 so he started getting $3 $1 per account every day that was in a period when he was getting paid about $7 a day for about 10 hours of work or about 15 from his two jobs this continued for so long that with time passing and him saving more he managed to get up to eight such accounts before they shut down that plan and changed it according to him that run for over 11 years the way this worked was him pretty much netting a 5% interest rate off the stupidity and arrogance of the bank just because most people at under 7K in savings so everyone subscribed on that plan was getting robbed whatever they were owed he said that the interest rate fluctuated up and down a bit so he ended up getting the amounts up at 8K just so he would be losing money when the rate was falling lower he said that according to his calculations he net about $111,000 over what his money should have earned with that apy of 2.5% bonus story I'm getting charged a monthly service fee an ATM with drawal fee a register fee even when I want to put cash in my account and there's no other way Etc and I had an account my main one from my student years that was in a different bank bought by the current one so my account still has the old code in the system and the old fees which pretty much was no fees unless you do something in the office that could be done online for free in other words about $10 to $15 a month less so I was trying to do some personal business and the register lady tried to promote me different paid service packages that would make all those fees go away by paying for a package and I declined since my main account was 95% cheaper for my use after a few times she checked my account and saw that the main account was free essentially she called to the central office of the bank and told them in front of my face we're not charging this customer anything because he has an account from old Bank how can I close his account and transfer him to a paid one you can imagine red lights in my eyes and steam out of my ears first I had to threaten to just close all my accounts there go have a talk with her supervisor and put in an official Complaint I'm not making crazy money by any stretch but I get sent on Long overseas projects and all my expenses go through those accounts so if a month's salary was $11,000 made up figure but I make a bit over the national average for indication when on Project I'm spend 15 to 20K a month and then that money is returned to me as expenses so in the eyes of the bank I deal with 20K a month you can adjust that number higher for real figures so that could be a visible loss for them maybe we argued went to the manager of the branch employee got scolded in the excuse was but he's not paying anything at the moment how are we supposed to promote the paid packages also an official Complaint was filled against her but nothing real I can do more but sitting in Rage I remembered my grandpa's story about something he was actually able to do the third story is manager was not happy with my performance before I start I need to make a few things clear I work in a hardware and Furniture Store the store vision is to become the most beloved store in the surrounding area we have two supervisors one is a decent guy that wants the store to succeed we'll call him Jim he's the main supervisor the other's more of a sidekick and more of a problem to me the supervisor sidekick seems to do F all in the store treats me and others like idiots and explains the simplest tasks for at least 15 minutes I suspects he need this time to fully figure out how the task should be done himself we'll call him D this story is a side job for me to help while I'm getting my bachelor in software engineering but his full-time job so let's get to it my primary task according to my job description is to stock shelves however since our vision was updated all stocking staff is tasked with focusing on customer satisfaction first and stocking after I work one evening 18 to 21 and one day 9 to 18 a week the previous evening I worked there was very little stocking to do I took a cart and started it was a slow evening but I got a few questions thrown my way had a few conversations with customers about what they were doing and generally helping them in the process proc and made a sale that took an hour due to the customer not really knowing what they wanted this meant I could do very little stocking work understandably D wanted to know why I hadn't finished my cart I explained to him that I had been busy and what I had been busy with answering questions and handling customers he didn't like that he just wanted the stocking work to be completed he accused me of not working hard enough I was working my butt off and not having my priorities straight I feel like I was prioritizing according to our policy as I felt that I was being unfairly accused I didn't go yes sir but went full defense in an irritated manner this unproductive conversation lasted for about 20 minutes with him being very demeaning towards me I may have been a bit of a smart a in this conversation but then again isn't the essence of malicious compliance to be the biggest smart a you can be I asked him why it doesn't help with stalking if it's needed told him to watch the camera footage of what I was doing things like that finally he told me I'm here for the customers you're here to stock all right Mr D we'll do the next shift Jim was the supervisor for the first half of the day and D for the second half I told every customer that asked a question the following even though I'm fully capable of helping you my supervisor doesn't allow me to handle any questions as I'm hired to stock I'll call someone to help you after Jim had to handle a customer in myste he came up to me and asked me why I told customers I wasn't allowed to help them I told him that according to D I'm there to do the stocking and he's there to handle the customers all this resulted in me D and Jim having a nice conv ation in the lunch break after which Jim left the store to de's capable hands and both me and de having to concede that our demeanor hadn't been professional we both apologized and shook hands the day went decently I have a sneaky suspicion that this is not the last time I'll be posting about my adventures
