to know yourself to have great self-awareness uh certainly celebrate successes along the way but man we've there ain't nobody um that is where we need to be right now and so we got a lot of work to do and this gives us another opportunity a different type of challenge this week a wounded dog coming in here a well coached football team a group of coaches that have been incredibly successful they've got a talented roster and they're trying to figure out stuff that we're trying to figure out finding the right guys to put on the bus and then put them on the right seat and so they'll have some shuffling around we'll have a little bit of shuffling round as well that's just part of you know figuring your team out Houston on offense big experienced quarterback that they got back there what have you seen uh from Houston on tap offensively again we studying Donovan all the way back to last year you know he threw for 22 touchdowns which was fourth best in the conference uh has taken over, 1600 snaps in the Big 12 and so this is an experienced athletic UM quarterback he's thrown for over 60% on a on a through the course of a year and he's in a new system and they're trying to figure out what they you know how they want to utilize them he can run he can throw it since so Ken is back they got three deep and they're all almost clones and they'll have some packages where two quarterbacks are out there and um and then they have a brand new group of guys up front that they're trying to work through uh you'll see a variety of personnel groupings 11 and uh 12 two tied end some three tied end person Personnel sets as well and they'll give you everything from empty to end over sets and four and the Back Field uh defensively they're aggressive uh they've got some real Playmakers at all three levels there linebackers and the secondary and up front and it's a group of guys that you know again if you look at uh UNL from a year ago that was a really highly successful averaging around 48 points a game a year ago and uh you know they held them well below their their um total yardage numbers their points totals and so that's a group that that's going to come in here you know uh confident Willie Fritz kind of known as a program Builder he's been doing it for a long time from watching him from afar what's made him so successful um he he keeps things simple he's about the basics he's about the fundamentals he can identify people's strengths and puts them in the right position to be successful he's going to utilize all three phases and make sure that they're playing in unison uh so the field possession uh not giving up explosive plays possessing the football getting it to the fourth quarter and then uh putting them in the right play so offensively they they do a lot of checking at the line of scrimmage to make sure they're in the right run the right pass the right protection uh so they don't take a lot of negative yardage plays and then they they do a really good job of development of the talent identifying good talent maybe undervalued and then getting them you know a lot out of that Talent you channeling the spirit of Bud Wilkinson tonight for this I mean you know hey look um nobody has you know more respect and appreciation you know for what Oklahoma football's represented for such a long time and what it means to so many people and um so high expectations and high standards uh standards always Trump those expectations but um so to be able to to recognize the the past teams um it's been a lot of fun for our players as we've tried to educate them on what those past teams and the past coaches uh what they've represented and uh so this has be a really cool opportunity for our guys to um have a little extra juice if you will you know you you hope that's not the motivating factor but they will um and I think the fans will have a great appreciation for what they see as well should be fun go get them coach appreciate you thank you Boomer room sharp hul in five receptions for a team leading 47 yards and the opening touchdown of the season in his sooner debut the last tight end to score a touchdown was Austin stogner against West Virginia last season the last tight end to have five or more receptions in the game was Braden Willis against Texas Tech in 2022 the last tight end to lead the team in receiving yards well that was Gabe ier is down in that South End Zone where the Sooners have been working with the offensive line who looks healthy who looks in on that offensive line Gabe well I Jake Taylor looks like a guy that's gonna play to me and with with the way that he's warming up I would expect him to be your starter at the right tackle position so you're looking at some combination of seon and Tarin I'm guessing with no Hickman that would mean you're going to get Josh Bates at Center weu is Going to Be Your Right Guard that's the one you feel like you know where he's going to be but yeah with the way that Jake Taylor is going through warm-ups I expect him to play guys and Toby that's a great sign last week Jake Taylor did not play but was suited up Woody Washington did that as well so we'll be to U Houston tonight well first and foremost week in week out this is always going to be the same number one dominate the line of scrimmage um defensively last week you can check the box on that offensive line not so much I think uh we need to bounce back this week it sounds like we're getting healthier on the offensive line we need to dominate both sides on the line of scrimmage number two the vertical passing game we hit on a couple of plays or we had opportunities on a couple of plays in week one that needs to be more of a threat for us we need to start testing defenses down the field and the results of that are going to trickle down into the running game and number three no explosive plays on defense uh we've done a good job like you can tell the difference with this team the communication no mental mistakes we should be able to contain Houston's offense today no problem the only thing that could keep them in the game is if we have issues on the back end a guy not in the right Gap in the running game and we let something get out of the gate for an explosive play and they get into the end zone if we can limit that not not limit it eliminate that and we should be just truly believe he wouldd be in a bigger program if he was a couple inches taller I like the physicality he plays with we saw U's interior offensive line struggled to create movement at the point of attack last week against Temple Carlos Allen is not going to make it easy tonight with the way that he plays that defensive tackle position for the Cougars so I've got my eyes on 92 for Houston's defense nose tackle number 18 Anthony Holmes 62 295 sophomore out of Houston and the dog or the other defensive end number four Rush end Brandon Mack 63 senior ol Miss transfer the linebackers one of whom's a sooner a former sooner number 25 Jamal Morris 6-2 senior from Houston transfer from OU and number 44 is Michael baton 61 senior from Houston transfer from Louisiana Monroe I asked the Houston play-by-play voice Kevin esen Felder who the best players are on this U defense or this Houston defense and he mentioned a couple of secondary guys defensively lron McCutchen is is probably the the guy that everybody points at but AJ Hy is another guy too he he's he's a safety he was there last year he was transfer out of New Mexico uh he's a guy that just really he had an interception this past week and I thought he was uh I thought he played really well he mentioned Latrell McCutchen there Chris plank he'll wear number one another name that should sound familiar he's a former sooner as well he'll be at one corner tonight for the Cougars and in your Spotlight he is one of five members from the 2021 recruiting class for Oklahoma that rank number number six in the country that will be on the field tonight of course four of those with the Sooners Danny stman Jalil faroo who unfortunately is out Billy Bowman and Ethan DS but Latrell mccut and the fourstar out of Austin LBJ was a high school teammate with Andrew makuba who is now a Texas boy he had a sit out last year and it's kind of unique because it was an old transfer rule right he didn't have his undergrad degree before he transferred from USC to Houston so as a second time transfer he had a sit out a season called it the hardest thing he ever did due to the transfer rules he said game days were the worst day of the week and actually brought tears to his eye he wasn't even on the field or around the team when they would go on the road but after Isaiah Hamilton transferred out in May to go to Old Miss he stepped up to be their number one guy be fascinating to see if Latrell McCutchen can make an impact in his return to Norman the other Corners number 12 a Johnny Carter 6-2 senior Utah straight transfer Utah State I should say safety's number eight Trail web 511 sophomore to Lane transfer the free safety number two the aforementioned AJ Hy career leading 190 tackles he had an interception last week against UNLV he transferred to Houston from New Mexico and the anchor of the nickel 15 Hershey mclen 62 senior from Friendship Mississippi that's another name that could sound familiar he played liked from last week's game was the two back set with Javonte Barnes and Taylor Tatum on the field at the same time I think we're going to see more of that two back set in this football game with some of the injury issues at the wide receiver position I hope that that package in Seth L tril's offense continues to grow and I expect Javonte Barnes to get some more cares tonight with just how good he's looking physically I'm hoping we see a lot of number two because he's looking explosive and he's looking good Chris is that the goat that was just on the field down there Patty gasso absolutely guys we got an injured goat yeah she's got a a right arm that has been fractured fracture of the right wrist so she's waving people home too much yeah that's exactly what happened she was waving coordinator Seth Latrell said about him this week he's been awesome since he been here not only um you know stepping up as a leader but really coming in and um you know works extremely hard um you know he wants to be great um he wants to be coached hard um he wants to be pushed by coach Schmitty you know and uh always trying to find as many different ways for him to get the ball in his hands jumbo it wasn't apparent in live action it sure looked like it it it happened right in front of me and that he could not have act acted calmer which usually is an indicator that he didn't touch it but we'll see oh no well right there it doesn't look like he touched it what they're showing in the stadium yeah the ball doesn't see what about his right hand off the bounce right there yeah like his right it doesn't look like the spin of the ball changes any but reminder call on the field is U ball and that he did touch it so you need conclusive evidence that he didn't Toby I'm glad you said that because that was one of the points during and I understand we have big 12 officials tonight but that was one of the points the SEC hammered home during SEC media days the reviews have to be beyond beyond a reasonable doubt if you will uh with evidence that truly overrides what happened on the field the initial call on the field is presumed to be the right call in a situation like this I don't think he touched it but I don't know if you can conclusively prove he did it's wild though that how you know 80,000 and the official right there on the sideline we're absolutely sure it did after the over to play the will and you know it's going to be tough to run on this group with those two big boys playing backer Robert Spears Jennings also in the game at safety uh-oh third and eight trips right Sanford the back shotgun snap Smith straight drop looking right steps up flushed throws across the middle high catch flag is down this could be a touchdown Williams in the open field caught from inforced in the previous spot third down well that's where they've gotten us though so far as a couple of the extended plays that's when it gets really hard on the back end you know if the quarterback's able to you know kind of break loose from the initial Surge and get outside and create some different time those all the route Concepts break down you're just trying to hang on to whatever you can but then you get broken routes and that's tough tough on DBS third penalty on Houston backs it up to the 21 and brings up a third down and 18 with 108 to go in the quarter Oklahoma leads at 7 to3 probably be real conservative here on this call I would imagine trips right one left Smith has it looking across the middle throws it back left side screen and it's caught far side with room to run 30 35 pushed out of bounds I think just shy of the first down marker hardly anybody over there 37 yd line that's a 16 yd gain but they needed 18 boy this is a real good play design you know you've got the trips to the right and the back is offset to that creating the four and it's that they fake that little drag screen where the number one receiver comes back behind the line of scrimmage and they instead of bringing the back to the front side to block they hide him and he skates back and they throw that running back screen to him pretty good play design and luckily we sniffed it out late enough to be able to get that push out of bounds Suter go punt safe here on Fourth and two Willie Fritz waited to send the punt team on the field but he finally did it there's the kick Lefty far sideline Billy Bowman calls for a fair catch dropped it jumps back on top of it I was talking to Brent early in the week and Willie Fritz is a huge uh analytics guy oh really so he goes you've seen so far from this offense and the defensive adjustments yeah I think that when you look at U's offense it's about getting the Run game going and I love what I've seen from javante Barnes during this during this last series and I think that stuff that two back set they can really build on it but if you're Oklahoma's offense you you can't really be com con concerned at all with what Houston is doing offensively you just have to operate the way that you want to operate but yes plank it's clear Houston wants to reduce the the possessions in this game by the way we got a heck of a
