Game 7: (128) Umass Minutemen @ (1) Georgia Bulldogs (CF25 Tournament: First Round)

[Applause] welcome to Athens Georgia Sanford Stadium home to the Georgia Bulldogs where more than 990,000 have already started to bark loudly today we have one of those games that test your focus top 25 team against an unranked opponent can you take care of business as we'll see the UMass Minutemen taking on the number one team in the land the Georgia Bulldogs for EA Sports college football ree Davis with you alongside David poock and Jesse Palmer and guys can't wait to get this one started Georgia about to kick it off to get us [Applause] underway on the move from inside is five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the cover average team and they stop him at the 21 the miniman offense takes the field and they'll go to work first and not only is this guy the energy and the engine of the offense there's a certain Charisma that he has that sort of elevates everyone around him he's got a Moxy about him ree it just seems like when he's in the Huddle he's got 10 other sets of I pass on the way it's picked off he'll try to take it back touchdown Bulldogs a great return for the touchdown any return for a touchdown is a great one to a defense and that is not the start this offense wanted you're trying to come out you're trying to create some momentum and get a rhythm and consistency but you throw the pick six early and put yourself in a hole not [Applause] good ready to try the point after and he's got the extra point and it's seven nothing to start this [Applause] one they're about to kick it away and the defense probably can't wait to get back out there after the pick six here he comes from inside his own five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the minut and going back to work on offense the big thing now don't get rattled by that last pick six David N it was a big mistake uh obviously the defense took advantage of it but you got to put it behind you Jesse I'm sure you know a thing or two about throwing a pick six and and had a rebound I believe I've only thrown one in my life but yes I do because of that singular instance I'll say this you can't let that play Beat you twice you got to go out not try to get it all back here in one play Just execute the offense the run from the shotgun found a little bit of Running Room knocked down at the 24 after a pickup of four that didn't bust for a long one but now third down becomes very manageable it's not third in eternity now the whole Playbook short passing game long passing game all of it's available Here Comes This Home crowd as the defense tries to get off the field on third down they'll try to pick it up on the ground they were all all over him nowhere to go as that third down play turned into a disaster great job by that Defender I mean he timed that snap count perfectly got into the back field and created the negative play UMass will line up to punt it away this will be their first punt of the afternoon this is a spot you see many returners try to take a chance but not this time the fair catch just inside the 40 the Bulldogs offense taking the field first chance we have to see them today as we take a look at our impact players for this one what are you looking for Jesse for a guy to make an impact well these are simply put the leaders of this football team and generally games go how these guys play if they make plays they've got a shot to win this one no doubt they got to show up the these are the team leaders these guys have to play well if they're going to win the football game solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six right back to him on the ground continuing to turn and move it forward and they're closing in on Midfield it's down at the 48 and that's the problem with blitzing on defense you live by the blitz you die by the blitz defense dialed up the pressure but the offense had a better play call they ran it away from the Blitz and that's why they were able to be successful now on third down for this off defense to the ground to try to pick up the first he's got enough to move the chains and they'll spot it at the 47 you don't always have to run the sexy plays right it doesn't have to always be uptempo and fast and spread and doing all this stuff sometimes you just lower your shoulder sometimes you just run powerfully you get the first down and that's all that matters Georg are coming out with the fresh set of downs from the gun leaves it on the inside with the back nice solid form tackle from this sophomore and those physical runs take a toll it might not be a big game now but down the road third fourth quarter late in the ball games they tend to turn into bigger runs got three on first down it's second and seven wide receiver now comes in motion they're trying to get to it just too much of a rush and down goes the quarterback just behind the Midfield strip at the 49 the defense just simply not fooled by the play action often times an offense you're hoping the Run fake is going to slow down those pass rushers but man oh man they had their ears pinned back they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one looking to throw it's back coming after him can't make the connection the pressure there caused to miss timing this dude will pick you apart if you give him time you better get to him you better make him feel uncomfortable this defense did that nice job by the defense hurrying the quarterback through his thought process georgo lining up to punt it away he ought to be able to use this first punt to pin him deep no opportunity to run it back as the ball goes out of bounds the UMass offense turns to the field boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clicked no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here th yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit on this drive the Roar of the crowd trying to fuel this defense to keep them pinned in their own end on second down down he'll fire receiver looks it in it's complete and the defense stops him just short of the first down maybe needed a few more chain links to move the [Applause] sticks and that last completion left him short of the sticks it's third down to the ground to try to move the chains just nowhere to go against this defense to B that that single yard he needed on third down great job a contained by this defense and in order to do that the end man on the line of scrimmage defensively has got to be able to set the point and force the football back into traffic and that's exactly what happened there fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair Catch and Georgia ready to go back to work on offense they missed an opportunity to extend this lead the last time they had it Jesse yeah they got to be able to regain that momentum right go back to what was working earlier on in this one and David to me that starts with being the more physical team oh I definitely agree being the more physical team but understanding the situation of the game you're still winning you got the football back now put a nice drive together and execute well guys it's Georgia holding the lead at the end of the quarter and after that first quarter let's see if these guys can get back in the game in the [Applause] second here's this offense with a fresh set of downs wide receiver shows motion touch pass on the Jet Sweep and how about the efficiency on that one it'll bring up second and four all right so not a home run play for the offense but I do like the creativity and I like how they're going to stress this defense and do it in less conventional ways ran the ball on first down let's see what they do on second finds a tight end he almost picked up the first down on that one but he'll be just a little bit short nice job by the defense staying glued to him getting him on the ground as soon as he catches the football knowing he's a threat I'm not going to let this guy get out of my sights nice job by the D will they keep it on the ground again here on third down quick touch pass to the receiver nothing but green ahead and chunk plays are the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes the stop this defense really needs to be careful and they have to play with great eye disciplin understanding where the football is at all times moving forward they have got to know if this guy has the ball cuz he is dangerous in space and the Bulldogs look to keep this drive humming they'll try the run and a nice job by the running back finding space getting downhill making the good run great job finishing with his PS going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone dropping back it's back he's got his man didn't get a whole lot of yardage before he was stopped but using the running back in the short passing game gives him a first down that's what it means for the quarterback to be responsible for the Blitzer he held it as long as he could got rid of it and they pick up the first down yeah and it's basically like him blocking them right just letting him come in come in now I throw it to the running back and now as a defense I got to get that guy on the ground I did my job I'm and he takes it to the house touchdown Georgia and what a push up front by this offensive line everyone playing in unison driving out of their stance working into the second level hats on hats creating a lane for that running [Applause] back lining up to tack one more onto that lead and the extra point makes it 14 nothing an impressive 66 yd touchdown drive and they finish it off with the score from the four lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown [Applause] Drive fielded In The End Zone it's Brown pulled down at the 18 and the decision to bring it out of the end zone was not a good one the Minuteman going back to work on offense this is when the pressure can ramp up a little bit on an offense David when they start feeling the heat to answer a score and I think being down 14 you can kind of feel that way but dude if you put a good drive together this is a seven-point game so Palmer no need to panic I was just going to say David I mean this thing can flip quick you go down score all of a sudden your defense gets a stop or who knows better yet gets a turnover this game is entirely different going to run it it's John he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions not exactly the ideal situation for this offense third and long backed up inside their 20 back to pass it's pachan and it's incomplete on third down that's why it's so important for this defense to win first and second down you set up third and Longs like that you can show your exotic looks you can get the pass rush going everybody in the back end expecting throw and that's how you force incompletions and Force fourth Downs UMass will line up to pun it away fair catch called for and made we're ready to get another look at this Bulldog offense they want to set the tone strike quickly Jesse they've done exactly that up two touchdown and this quarterback has been dialed in too he's been so good reading coverage going to where the open guy is with the football and they've been up and down the field D so far and this defense needs to make something happen right now you've already given up a couple touchdowns your offense has got nothing going still early in the game get a stop create some momentum for your offense motion from the offense they're bringing Heat and the quarterback is snowed under but when it's a playaction pass that quarterback he really has to sell the fake he can't tell his offensive lineman's getting beat right away while he's selling the fake he had no [Applause] shot they've got some work to do on this third and long from the 40 as we reach the two-minute warning they'll need to try to get a stop to keep this thing from getting out of hand here they come facing third and long from the 40 from the gun wants to pass it's caught and he was loose and in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one and listen the defense knew coming into this one they were going to Target him early and often he is a weapon and there's no mystery where the quarterback's going to be looking on critical down and distances let's see how they are able to cover him throughout the rest of this game using the back as a receiver on the screen they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some Lan for their running back lots of good stuff on that play you slow down down the rush you get a completion and you move the chains and most importantly you're right you don't force a short yarded situation that you have to get nice job invite that Rush up the field take advantage of the looking for the end zone and good coverage there and knock it away and deny the score you simply don't see that very often a quarterback of this guy's caliber missing a guy wide open in the end zone he makes those throws in his sleep the incomplete pass leaves him with second down they want to just keep throwing it they're setting up the screen not a whole lot of room there on that screen passes it just never develop and so many things have to come together perfectly for a screen to work for big yardage and they were closed you could tell that almost busted but they just got wrapped up got a little bit of yardage but they really wanted that one to be a big Gainer on third down going up top they've got the screen set up he's right out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down great job too by the QB there holding the ball as long as possible allowing the pass rush to get up field and at the very last second getting it to his guide so that he can go get the first down the dogs with the first and 10 back to pass it's backck he's got it on the Run touchdown dogs and they take it in for six more points and there's so many targets to focus on and so many Elite Playmakers and they just lost it they lost the running back out of the back field he catches the football does the rest takes it into the end zone what a nice weapon to have on your team [Applause] lining up for the Pat and the extra point will tack another one onto this lead a 67y touchdown drive there and they finish it with an 11 yd touchdown Dart just about set to kick it [Applause] away and he'll just take a knee and this drive will start at the 25 the UMass offense returns to the field this lead in the half you're behind you'd love to create something before the break to build momentum Jesse but you've also had some miscues on offense a big part of why you're losing the game right now I'd take it into halftime make my adjustments and come out ready in the second half yeah I'm going to take it in halftime too pmer but I'm trying to put some points up right here be aggressive set the tone be like Hey listen this is what you're going to get in the second half so find something really quickly you can go to nice job there good timing between the QB and the wide receiver executing that out route still some work to do after that last completion it's second down dropping back it's pachan he makes the connection there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer finally this offense starting to shake the cobwebs and get things moving it's first and 10 he's looking to throw it fires to the wide out a strike downfield big big gain on that one as he steps out of bounds with a first down I know it's early in the game but defensively after that play you know you have to tackle the catch when this guy gets the ball in his hands he is so dangerous after the fact so it's okay for him to make catches you just got to get him to the ground quickly after that huge play right back at him on First and 10 from inside the 15 makes a catch they'll Mark him down at the two the excellent execution on that throw and catch nice completion here here to this wide receiver and you're going to see this receiver line up in different spots all over the field all game long defense has got to keep their eye on where this guy is because they know he's a big part of this offensive success they'll use a timeout right before halftime maybe time for one or two more plays and here on second down they'll send out the field goal unit to try to get three before the break splits the uprights right down the middle [Music] so they get the late field goal right before the half and not much time after this kick off for an answer let's see what he can get done from inside his own 15 coverage team there to make the stop they avoid disaster and that's the end of the first half first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connors in our halftime update thanks men the end of a very entertaining first two quarters of football in Athens talk about a first half from that dude out of the back field he's been a total Game Changer and how many top plays moments have we seen on Miss tackles Alone video game moves from one of the shiftiest players in all of college football and with that let's send it back to the Filas between the hedges in Sanford Stadium second half just about to get started and UMass will kick it off let's see what he can do with the return he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 and George are ready to go back to work on offense they start this third quarter with the lead but they might want to think about in up that protection yeah the good news is you're you're leading on the scoreboard the bad news is your quarterback doesn't feel like it cuz you can't protect him so David adjustments and pass protection that has to be something they were talking about here at halftime 100% just you can't get him hit that much he's still doing a good job delivering the football but if you keep hitting the quarterback enough man they'll start to see ghost they'll panic and they'll make some of those mistakes open the drive with a chunk play out past the 40 and they are in business on first down and they couldn't hold off the heat and he go goes down with the sack playaction pass success has a lot to do with selling that fake you could tell defense was not buying it got in the back field got the big [Applause] play they'll try to keep that sack from Wrecking this drive here on second and 15 keeps it on the boot leg throws to the wide out grabbed in the middle it's Thomas and how about that what the doctor always ordered an explosive play to the 40 the dogs pick up the first down through the air and the Georgia faithful starting to howl and bark and we've seen that in the past with Georgia maybe you get a little bit conservative a little bit too much riing on great defense run the football the reason that they broke through the reason they started started winning championships in the recent era they became more aggressive more Dynamic throwing the football down the field and defense nowadays they don't look at stats of what is the yards per rush they look at how many negative plays they can create cuz why now you look at second down man it just became very predictable for this offense nice job creating the loss on first down they'll run it out of the shotgun really nice stop there from this senior leag and sticking to the run I tell you what a lot of teams that are really good are really stubborn and they continue to run the football even with little success so this offense is going to continue to focus on running the football you can tell they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here to the air it's Beck and they'll miss the connection here on third down really nice third down sub defense there that time it's third and long they're expecting pass and they're mixing up their looks they're trying to change the picture pre- snap to post Snap to confuse the quarterback and now forcing the incompletion setting up fourth so they're going to send out the field goal unit to try a long one he's going to have to break out the thunderfoot on this one a 57 yd attempt splits the upright it's good and that will extend their lead even further well that kid just showed up his hammer for a leg 50 plus and he did it with ease that lead just keeps getting fatter in this kickoff team doing a little [Applause] running the returner will field it and bring it back I know he thinks he can house every return but sometimes you just have to take a knee as he's stopped at the 14 the inside hand off now they've got Breathing Room got six all the way out to the 20 you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second down really really manageable that's a great job by the offense got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four pulls it and fires to the left and just a short safe pass play they pick up a few this quarterback right now is in a Groove and he's doing a nice job in pre-nap he's reading the coverage and he's getting an idea of where he wants to go with the football that's why the ball's cominging out of his hands so quickly that's why he seems like he's in a great Rhythm right hum quickly back to the line they'll try to run for it draged down to the turf but not before getting the first down that is how it's done on third down and short and no doubt about it an easy hole to get through and clearly get the first down if you really want to simplify football the low man wins that time the offense got the better of the D easily picked that up you m getting set to snap it on First and 10 they're getting this guy lathered up at the 40 there he goes and they'll pick up the first down and Mark it at the 47 when you talk about creating big plays in the running game like this this makes the game really easy actually when you got a guy like this that you can hand it to with this much speed and elusiveness just hard to bring down in the open field what a big game for the offense comes out throwing on first down can't hang on and he'll tell you he really should have made that catch and he had an opportunity right in the middle it'll be second down that's what I'm talking about that is how you close and when a guy's going to make a catch you make sure he doesn't make it physicality using your pads running through him and guess what not only this play does he feel it next time he tries to go over the middle or feels footsteps this will pay dividends and he has a solid gain before the defense bottles him up I know the passing game sells and the passing game is exciting but it's not exciting to get five or six yards of pop on the ground but it will be very successful guys this offense is already reeling down multiple possessions really need to cash in on this drive looking to pass it's pachan he's got the tight end and they react did well to the completion but it was too late to keep him from getting the first down well look that wasn't a touchdown but that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression the give out of the gun he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple well there's a statement by the defensive line first down play expect run and they just dominated up front beat their one-on ones and force a tackle for a loss the negative play leaves them with second and 12 leaves it with the running back and a good solid pick up before the defense Cuts him down hum Mas quickly back to the [Applause] [Music] line gives it to the back on the draw and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker well guys it's Georgia holding the lead at the end of the quarter and they are starting to pull away as we come to the end of the third quarter let's take a look at how we got here just about ready to go in the fourth and we'll see if any drama can be mustered down by multiple possessions you can't come up empty on this drive they'll go for it on fourth down the incomplete pass ends a frustrating series and they turn it over on downs from the gun running back on the Move play callers love it offensively when you can run the football when the other team knows you're going to do it that is called imposing your will and here in the fourth quarter with the lead very first play of the drive you break off a nice run he might just call the exact same play right again here after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven right back to the well that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there ball is at the 41 as this defense tries to force the punt on Third and long off play play action grabbed behind the line it's Del good tackle there to stop him short of the first down and now they have to make a call such a tough spot to be in on defense because you're trailing You're Expecting the offense to run the football they just did it on the last play and then on a critical third down they go play action and they throw it over your head you got to feel for this defense Georgia sends out the punt team this will be the second time they've had to kick it away and they'll let that one go and it'll roll out of bounds the Minutemen going back to work on offense that last Drive was promising at times but stalled out and they turned it over on Downs Jesse I think they got to do a better job here just being better early in the Downs on first down finding positive plays yeah and it's frustrating when you move the football and get stopped on the other side of the field and get no points but they've had some success and I like the aggressiveness they just got to cash some of these drives in let's see what they've got on second down to the air it's puman throws to the tight end and he really needed to hold on to that one but it was knock loose and third down is coming it's a nice adjustment by the defense here with a big lead in the game you're putting extra DBS on the field knowing the offense has to throw to get back in this one in the fourth quarter so your best cover guys on the field and they force an incompletion on the last one you've got a third and manageable backed up in your own end but convert here and you get some momentum unloads to the Wi out t spot in the middle a quick tackle made but he's got plenty for the first down the offense has struggled they're not going to win this game but trust me this coaching staff is still trying to find things to build off of for next week and after an explosive play like that maybe they can generate just a little bit of momentum and gain a little bit of confidence that they can keep coaching up heading into their next game just masterful working that sideline and getting the toe down for the catch when you're throwing these comeback routes man the timing has got to be so good between the two of them because you know the ball is going to be in the air a long time you can't throw it late it's going to get picked that time really nice job getting it out early and the receiver doing a nice job on his route so that the ball was right on him as soon as he turned around looking to throw it again and it's picked off and the offense makes the tackle in frustration after the interception Drive comes up empty and it's a turnover and as a defensive lineman late in the game man when you know it's passed you're pinning your ears back trying to get to the quarterback and DBS are trying to do this pad them stats get the int nice job by this D we're ready to get another look at this Bulldog offense here's another opportunity Jesse to stretch out this lead after punting last time I think it goes back to your Playmakers reys I think it's finding the guys that have been working for you earlier on in this game and getting them the football yeah and there's obviously no need to panic I mean think about it you got the lead you got the football you got to be smart with the football make your plays put a good drive together here eight- yd pickup on first down leaves them with second and short the give and tick tick tick tick tick tick tick there to stop him at the 43 but he gets five and moves the sticks and often times running backs love draw plays because there's less traffic in front of them the offensive line is selling pass the quarterback selling pass they don't get the handoff until the very last possible second so the D Line's rushed away up field and now it's so much easier for these backs to find their holes and pick their lanes and they Tred the middle of this defense and that is not happening and just a great job by the defense being Stout right that's your job be Stout up front stuff in the Run play make them get in more passing situations but do not let them run the football that's 101 stop the run first they got nothing on the last play it's second and [Applause] 10 it's a draw he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three it's going to be tough sledding for the offense here they're trying to ice this game by running the football and bleeding the clock they've got a pretty good lead here late in the game but the defense knows the run's coming right so they're going to be loading the line of scrimmage getting stops like what they just did be interesting to see what the offense does on this next [Applause] one a third and long coming up here give to the running back and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop there's nothing more frustrating than when you get late in the game and you know they're running the football and you don't stop them it's been that kind of day for this defense they haven't played well they're going to have to go to the well they're going to have to figure some things out practice this week I can promise you will not be a lot of fun with these coaches he Nails it a 58 yd field goal how nice is it as a head coach to have a kicker like this it makes these decisions on fourth down so much easier just trut him out there and let him stroke it through the upright they're really starting to to extend that lead as they get ready to kick it away again and they thought about a return Then thought better of it they'll bring it out to the 25 the UMass offense returns to the field this has been a really disappointing performance David no question about that but they can find some positives yeah and every time you watch the tape you know Jesse coaches are pointing out look at this this was open if we' have just ran the details to the right route hung on to the football little things can make a big difference yeah that's why they call it a game of inches David but I'll say this if you're on offense don't go on social media this week it ain't going to be pretty after this performance you've got to lock in you got to take the week of practice very seriously and find those positives that you can build off David you're talking about and this is just one of those days man where everything has gone wrong right like they just haven't been in a rhythm they haven't they haven't got it going and never built the momentum this is this is one of those days you learn from you try to grow from a lot of things that we're going to show in the film room that people aren't going to like but hopefully you can learn from it and do better next time didn't have much of a choice there but to get rid of it and this defense has put her game together like it is hard to put all the facets of Defense together run defense pass defense they've been so good man dialed in you could tell they were ready they were fast they were physical they dominated this football game if they can convert here that type of play play can really give you a shot of momentum fires to the tight end and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down and listen the defense playing really conservative right you got the lead but here's what I'm trying to do I'm trying to get sacks I got to get to the quarterback like I got to make sure I'm getting him knocking him off the spot patting my stats by the way got a lot of sacks late in games and we had a big lead but that's okay that's what you're supposed to do keep competing defense mates a grab enough for the first and not much of a fourth down gamble when it's that much of a sure thing an easy conversion for this offense UMass getting set to snap it on First and 10 he's going to pass fires to the wide out connection to the right and they make the Striking connection and they've got it down to the 13 yd line of red zone chance and there's no quit in this team obviously they're trailing late in the game but they're trying to make it happen we've seen two big plays now backto back they're putting pressure on this defense how about that play to get a hand in there and force the incompletion and that's just the kind of game it's been for this quarterback in this offense you got a great game planing all week long you're watching it throughout practice you think you're going to have a chance to light up the scoreboard but they're just not able to hook up you got to give this defense a ton of credit they've done a great job in cover coverage they've been breaking on passes they've had their number and that's why they're leading by as much as they are he's got it on the move he threw that one with some serious Heat this senior quarterback doesn't need a lot of space to get it in there and you got to love the versatility of the big fellow you can put him in the box and let him block big defensive lineman or you put him in the slot and you throw him the football and have success UMass lines up with a first and goal looking to throw it's pachan and it's caught touchdown minute man and a nice touchdown continuing to fight continuing to play this one it's pretty much over down multiple possessions this late in the football game it would take a miracle but nice job by this offense continuing to fight push the ball down the field make plays [Music] [Applause] here comes the two-point try takes a snap wants to throw quarterback now on the Run still looking he gets in there for the two-point conversion and now we have a two-possession game time is against them still down by two scores but they'll line up for the onside kick he's able to grab the football and the hands team gets the job done yeah and this is why you put your hands team on the field most of the time when you know it's coming and you put those guys that are great catchers of the football the first guys what do they do they go block they go blow somebody up the next guys catch the football secure it get your butt on the ground and most of the time when you do this the ball ball game is over [Applause]
