Adam Schefter UPDATE: 49ers are preparing to play Week 1 without Trent Williams; J. Chase's contract

fans got some relatively good news Monday there are reports the team and star wide receiver Jamar Chase are working on getting a deal done this week the Bengals uping their efforts to get a deal done in recent days after Chase stopped practicing during his hold in he was in Street Clos at practice on Monday the team of course open their season against the Patriots this coming week here's Bengals head coach Zack Taylor speaking to the media this afternoon right I'll start by announcing our captains uh special teams captains were Keem Davis gather and EV mcferson on defense we had Germaine Pratt Sam hubard and Von Bell and our offense we had burrow uh Ted and Orlando so I think it's a great group of eight you know there's there's no number I really usually put on it um a lot of guys got votes you could make an argument for about 20 um and it was really was was impossible to whittle it down tighter than that we had eight guys that are all very qualified and and uh I feel really good as they were nominated by their by their peers you expect march to play on Sunday we'll just take a today do you have to put together a game that includ not yeah we're always ready you know there's always injuries and things you got to deal with so we're adapt to that how about Mar is he training towards play we'll see we'll give it through the week Jamar a it's impossible for me to say with with 100% conviction but um I feel good about the shape that he's in's yeah I mean you have to ask those guys that are going through [Music] it [Music] ask right I mean I think that's the that that's the best way to put it there's a bunch of guys that maybe weren't captains um that still have that responsibility in that pool in the locker room and with me uh but Pratt it was good to see get the recognition he deserves you know he does a great job he works hard in the in the film room um hard worker on the practice practice field obviously and makes a ton of plays for us in the game very smart player he in year six same year as me that's easy to remember um so again it's just good to see guys rewarded and um knowing that it could have been a bunch of other guys as [Music] well well smart player we'd played against smart player had a lot of respect uh you know he's a guy I know we we tracked on special teams before and then he got his opportunities on defense and so um we had a very clear picture this is like a lot of more feedback than normal I feel like uh we had a very clear picture of what he was as a person dating back to his time in Iowa um seen his role in that defense in Baltimore he' executed it very well he could see a very smart player good communicator made a lot of plays on the ball was always where he needed to be and we just thought that was the right fit for us on defense and he's to a te he's been everything that we'd hoped he would be and so I think it's been really good to see him and vaugh and the other DBS back there communicating and um I mean good good rundown player where he can fit in the Box make the tackle and um can be a physical presence in there and at the same time be on the back end and hold up his coverage responsibilities and be a weapon Force as well there so just a very well-rounded player that's that's been a good asset for us on defense Bangles head coach Zack Taylor addressing the media today and you heard off the top you may not have heard the questions but he was addressing the Jamar Chase situation he says the situation with Chase's dayto day if he's not available this week they're always ready if he is available he's confident that chase is in good enough shape to make a difference in the game this coming weekend against the Patriots of course Chase wants his name at the top of this list ahead of his former LSU teammate Justin Jefferson whose average annual value of his contract sitting at $35 million all right let's dig more into this with our lead NFL Insider Jonathan Jones JJ there seems to be hope that they can get this deal done in the coming days how much of Chase opting to sit out of practice and possibly holding out to Kickstart the season here uh kind of gave some impetus towards new talks and trying to get something done well deadlines always spur action right and so it is not surprising Jeremy that as we get closer to week one as Jamar Chase appears very serious about withholding his Services whether he actually will or not still of course to be determined that can spur some action it is a very unique situation first of all you have a Cincinnati Bengals franchise uh an owner in Mike Brown that does not regularly ever really hand out a whole lot of guaranteed money Beyond year one so that is to say that typically these deals are not done uh for guys of Jamar Chase's ilk uh very early they usually are done when they are in the Bengals parland supposed to be done and then on top of that you have a player in Jamar Chase right this sort of new generation of athlete who typically Jeremy in the NFL a wide receiver has to wait after his fourth NFL season to get that big payday that's typical usually quarterbacks great quarterbacks great young quarterbacks they only have to wait until after their third year right so uh Joe burrow only had to wait until after his third year to be to become the highest paid player in NFL history well that was with the Cincinnati Bengals organization and so if you are Jamar chase you say it shouldn't really matter what the standard practice is around the NFL it shouldn't be held against me that I'm a wide receiver I am crucial I am essential to this team's success and so I should be paid now even if that is not what this franchise typically does and so that's why we have been in sort of this stalemate for a long time it is unique it is different than what we just dealt with with Brandon auk in San Francisco for example and so no one really knows for sure if this deal will ultimately cross the finish line before week one well and that's the thing is that there's a lot of people in the Cincinnati area who are saying hey he's still got two years left we can wait another year and then we want to we don't want to tie up this money uh this year we want to kind of look at it but then you offer run the risk right JJ if it it could be 36 now it might be 38 or 39 by the end of next season right so do you have any insight into how close they are to a or how far apart the two sides actually are at this point so historically the Cincinnati Bengals don't give out guaranteed money Beyond year one to non quarterbacks right and we can go back 20 years and there was the issue with Carson Palmer and the Bengals there was some concern before Joe burrow got his deal about 12 months ago this week uh that he was ultimately going to get that big contract that they were going to be able to agree to terms on so much guaranteed money and the cash flow that would be coming in and so look all those Graphics Jeremy that we flash up there that have average annual value the thing that matters here for Jamar chase the thing that matters that graphic right there the thing that matters is the cash flow is the guaranteed money at signing and so CD lamb even though he is below Justin Jefferson just got $100 million guaranteed that matters when you put pen to paper what is it and so I would anticipate even though everyone is playing this very close to the vest based off of History one could anticipate again where CD lamb and his representation just took the bar at the wide receiver position that guaranteed money is surely at issue because the Bengals like a number of teams would tack on fake years would inflate the number at the end if you want to win on a graphic then Be Our Guest is what a number of teams would ultimately say but we will win in terms of cash flow in year one year 2 year three that's probably where the rubber is is meeting the road right now or rather is not meeting the road uh based off of how the Cincinnati Bengals have always operated and where this Market is today at wide receiver cause for optimism certainly for Bengals fans something we'll certainly be keeping an eye on again Chase was in Street close again today uh at practice all right JJ let's switch gears here there is other reporting out today that things are not great between San Francisco and left tackle Trent Williams and the threat of Williams missing games is quote very real uh what is the latest on this situation and are you confident that they can get a deal done here I think the threat of Trent Williams missing games has has been very real because Trent Williams has shown that he will miss games he will stand on principle he did that several years ago with Washington where he said I'm not playing for this organization again no matter what it costs me and ultimately uh wound up in San Francisco it was three years ago that he signed a 6-year 100 plus million contract and we see right here average average annual value Trent Williams has slid down now to uh sixth on the list and I know that I kind of joked about average annual value but when you look at the top of this with wors with Su with darol especially with tonsil these guys are getting a cash flow that Trent Williams isn't seeing right now and even though he's on the other side of 35 maybe even on the other side of 36 he is still by all estimation and Proclamation the best left tackle in all of football and so so what Trent Williams sees is oh the San Francisco 49ers just paid Brandon auk and last year they paid uh Debo Samuel and Bosa and in the summer even though Christian mcaffrey coming off the offensive player of the year uh award was already the highest paid running back in the NFL even though the entire NFL does not pay running backs and everyone has sort of tacitly agreed to that the San Francisco 49ers then gave Chris mcaffry a Rays because of how great he played uh last year for them in their Super Bowl run and so Trent Williams says well I'm pretty essential to this operation over here and I'm still the best in the NFL and it's been 3 years since I signed my deal here so I deserve to get bumped up if you're going to pay the guy who's already at the top I've slid down I deserve to go up there I remember being there Jeremy uh in I think Late July or early August and there was some thought that ultimately this will get done but maybe Trent just doesn't want to play in or excuse me practice in training camp maybe he will take a $50,000 fine as a man who has made tens of millions of dollars he'll take that fine per day and say you know what I'm going to train on my own and I'll be there when I ultimately get paid and now it is a very serious situation here with the ners where they may have to go into week one with Jaylen Moore as their starting left tackle I don't know how this is going to wind up but I don't think that Trent Williams is one to be trifled with I think that the ners should and are taking this quite seriously Niners opened their season a week from today on Monday Night Football hosting Aaron Rogers and the New York Jets
