Lancing Michigan Spartan Stadium and home of the Michigan State Spartans there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the AAC the Florida Atlantic owls taking on a team from the Big 10 the Michigan State Spartans for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis joined here in the booth as always by David Pollock and Jesse PA guys let's te this one [Applause] [Music] up and the Spartans will kick it away to start he thought about bringing that out for a half second but he'll take a knee and they'll bring it to the 25 so the Ford Atlantic owls offense takes the field for the first time today and here's the man they rally around and he has earned that type of respect David you dang right you earn it by doing it and he's done it at such a high level everyone believes in this young man in Palmer there's a reason why you're right David he's been in the big moments and he's won the big games this guy delivers when the game is on the line This Crowd full throat splitting the eard drums and letting him know it's going to be a long day nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry and they sniff that draw out well draw you you will have to sell that pass like you going to throw the ball down the field but the defensive line the defense was not biting you could tell they were ready for it Kan got on the running back got him on the ground quick fast and in a hurry he lobs one high down the left side oh he can't hang on to the football a big play sitting right there for the taking and they can't get it done early in this one FAU will send out the punt [Applause] team looking for a block it's brown everybody stays in their Lanes well enough and they stop him at the 31 yd line so the Michigan State smarts offense will have its first possession of the game here are our impact players for this game and it goes beyond executing an assignment to make an impact in the game yeah obviously we were talking to both coaching staffs this week and we asked them who needs to step up and play well they immediately pointed to these guys right here they are the key for their respective teams yeah and they don't always show up in the Box Score but these are the guys of the leaders these are the guys getting everybody organized and have to play well for their team to succeed Swit quarterback checking off back to pass it's child he tosses one high and deep down the left side and he holds it in inside the 30 these are the type of throws that can make the Spartan offense feel Invincible I mean just go to the next level you know you're going to get a heavy dose of the Run game but when you can complete these passes down the field you will have all Michigan State fans go green go white go green go white listen I know there are a lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put fires toward the end zone oh picked off takes it the other way he'll finally go out of bound but he was showing off all the skills after that interception FAU has it back as the owls offense will go back to work last time David it was one two three kick the last drive that three and out sometimes that puts your defense in a bad spot and you got to get a drive together here so you don't wear the defense out I just think daveid too predictable at that last Drive they got to do something here to get this defense on their heels grabbed over the middle it's Tucker and they explode on that one and they've got it down to the 22 hey nice job by the offense there attacking the middle of the field excellent route finding the soft spot in the defense nice job by the quarterback putting it right on his guy FAU racing to the line to the air on first down quick completion on the out route that's about as close as you can get to that marker and it will be second and just a few breaths away from the first down he's looking to throw caught near the stick it's more good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch the owls have their offense in high gear the inside handoff give him about a yard on the play it's down at the 10 operating in the Red Zone here on second [Applause] down the hand off to Johnson and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of [Applause] scrimmage on third down going up top and the pressure is going to get to him and down he goes and that's how the first quarter will end it's been a defensive battle through the first period and the stats tell that Tale they'll try to start the second quarter by putting points on the board with a field goal the holder will spot at about 35 yds out and it's no good he missed it kicker tried to tack a few more on the scoreboard guys and couldn't do it Michigan state has the ball back and here comes the [Applause] offense grabbed in the back field it's Carter got some of the work done on first now let's see what they have on second down power football with the run the Spartans get it past the sticks it'll be first and 10 from the 30 the they're getting this guy lathered up at the 40 there he goes smashes him with the stiff arm big big gain on that one as he steps out of bounds with a first down and the Spartans come to the line with a fresh set of downs one back in the back field he gets to carry oh man there's some big hitting going on in the trenches right now this defense they take a lot of pride in stopping the Run let's keep our eye on them throughout the course of the game and see if they can contain this running attack and you can forget running in the middle against this defense we'll take a quick break here two minutes to play and in the first half a third and long coming up here looking for a man it's child he makes the connection they make the stop but not before they do their work up top and pick up a first down the Spartans have pushed it inside the 20 quarterback will audible they're looking to pass from the red zone he got it and he will score touchdown Spartans and I just love the execution by this offense late in the half man you want to take the lead you want to get that momentum on your side and they do it they finish it with the passing game and tell you what keep that passing game up you can keep this lead keep the momentum and keep putting up numbers [Applause] he'll try to add another to their lead and the pat makes it 7 nothing so it's an 80 yd drive and they close the deal with a 20yd pass for Six about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown and and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive at their own 25 the FAU offense will return to the field we talk about settling for points but sometimes when you have to settle for nothing David it can be demoralizing yeah and it can definitely be frustrating and I think it leads you to safety and the pressure gets there and down he goes at the 18 so let's see if they can make up for that loss on second down from the 18 they'll run on the screen PS through the defense they make the stop but not before he takes a chunk out of what they need to move the sticks a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half on Third and long trying to have a big completion here and the heat gets there and they get him down at the 14 yd line the defense going to stop the clock with the timeout they want to make sure they have everybody on the same page fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way on the move it's brown little pressure on the coverage team there and they'll stop him at the 47 yd line the Spartans have it back on offense hoping to play some good ball really good balance on that last Drive they mixed it up all over the place Jesse yeah how nice too to have the defense on their heels because at this point they don't know what's coming at them they had problems stopping everything that last qu so I think this defense would come back with a a little more aggressiveness I mean they let them have what they wanted now they got to dictate to this offense a little bit more deep shot for the End Zone Falls incomplete and he did everything perfectly except catch the football second down coming down what a play by the defender there guys in his own End Zone the offense has taken a shot and if that Defender was just one step behind that would have been a touchdown but the hit forces the incompletion with the catch it's Carter this defense is going to have to be careful not only do they have to worry about this guy running the football but they've got to keep their eye on him when he runs routes to he is a versatile back they're going to go to the air on Third and short quickly complete he's out of bounds but not before picking up enough for the first down these routes have some reads and adaptability built in and the big fella found that cushion and made the play man it's so awesome how much offenses have evolved they know exactly what they're getting where to oh what a grab by the defense and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the pick this is obviously not a great start for this quarterback here two interceptions already in this game he's got to do a much better job with his decision making pressure coming and the quarterback caught up two and sacked at the 12 clock winding toward toward zero they'll get one more snap off that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with the halftime update gentlemen what else is new a spirited environment there in East Lancing and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top Michigan state has the ball back and here comes the offense going to the run to start this second half he got a bunch and look close to getting a lot more but he's got the first down this is going to be a big key for him David with the lead here in the second half running the football right staying on the field and bleeding the clock yeah run the football you're ahead you can be a little bit more conservative but again this opens up the pass this keeps everything in balance for this offense nice Patience by the quarterback here working against Zone coverage he was allowing his receiver an opportunity to find that open space in the defense before pulling the Trigg One Step wrap two-step squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground here on third down to the ground to try to pick up the first this might depend on the spot but I think he's going to come up just inches short of converting that third down they're strong and they're strong defensive tackles they're strong there's such big jokers in the Middle where they just lock out those offensive linemen and running backs listen they don't have much of a chance when you got that 300 plus pound gu grabbing you around the shoulder pad you tend to go to the ground pretty quick he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down and the Spartans are moving quickly down the field receivers telling the quarterback what they see wants to throw on first down catch in the middle it's belly they stop him just short of the first down but it will be second and inches coming up the Spartans are threatening in the red zone on second down wants to throw it incomplete thanks to the great defensive pressure there that sort of threw them out of rhythm and and that was good defense again and unfortunately we've been saying that all game long really really good defense or listen you can spin on the other side this offense has really been bad tackled after taking up the first down and another nice game by the offense High defense we got to change something up here they're putting a big drive together play after play having a lot of success how do we break the Rhythm how do we give them something that can create a tackle for a loss or a sack or something to get momentum back on my side he steps and powers and works his way they finally get him down at the two defense going all in to stop the [Music] run barges ahead into the end zone he goes touchdown Sparty timely decisions effective play management helps him get in the end zone after that marathon drive and every time the offense needed a play Boom they got it I mean you think about it whether it's was a small run small pass whatever they needed they got it done and they popped it in for the score lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown [Applause] Drive Z here here he comes from inside his own five he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 FAU has it back as the owls offense will go back to work this is when the pressure can ramp up a little bit on an offense David when they start feeling the heat to answer a score and I think being down and he's all bottled up and now it's worse the ball's loose defense covering it up and not letting the offense get it back it's a turnover the offense and starts with a short field takes a hand off it's Carter he's all the way down to the three an electric Rod has him set up and the Spartans have it in scoring position on first and goal trying to slam in and he takes it to the house touchdown Michigan State another rushing touchdown that's now two on the game this offense thought they could come into this one running the ball being The More Physical team and they look like it right now the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead they got the ball in great field position and Bam Bam two plays and into the end zone at he'll bring it back from inside to five finds his way up to the 24 before he goes out of bounds the FAU offense will return to the field trailing by three touchdowns if you're going to get back in it David the time to start is right now got to start now defense giv up points on that last possession again the offense is going to have to score and Jesse probably scored pretty quick yeah you got to go Tempo you're going to have to try to fit in as many plays as you can throughout the rest of this game but I think more than that you got to eliminate the negative plays no more penalties and no more turnover that pass is incomplete and they might be fortunate it wasn't knock free for a fumble it'll be third down feeling some heat got it set up on the outside he's got enough for the first down and he might get a few bonus yards if they call that a face Mas defense that's just an obvious face mask penalty there no way you're getting away with it got to keep your composure there that's the end of the quarter and Michigan state has the lead they've built a comfortable lead after 34s of play Let's Take a look at how we got here the offense comes back out with a new set of downs after the penalty getting some heat quickly complete the thing I like about the slot receiver he's really intentional in his route run the quarterback always knows exactly where he's going to be on the field they've got great chemstry looking to throw it's fer quickly complete open space of the 25 and he was loose and in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one they've marched to the Red Zone and here they go he'll throw it he's got it on the Move good throwing catch takes it down to the five as the offense tries to cash in going to work in the Red Zone they can't pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone lets it Fly had it in his hands for the score and let it fall to the turf it'll be third down boy they'd love to move the sticks here and take a shot at it on first and goal he's going to look for a man on Third and short he caught it they'll get him stopped just short of the end zone but they're in business here with a first down defense is backed up shadow of the goal post trying to defend their own end zone trying to get to it can't make the grab as he was going for six right there can the defense stop him again on second and [Applause] goal he's looking to throw he's got it in the end zone touchdown ow nice job by the offense going down the field putting points on the board but you're still down a couple possessions still need some good things to happen you need your kicker to go to get warmed up we need an onside we need to score some points we need a lot of things to go right to win this football game they are running out of time here they need to get the ball back they'll line up for the onside kick they're on it and they get it back for another drive and there's still life in this team obviously they're down here in the fourth quarter but they're able to execute the onside kick they retain possession and now let's see what happens can't find his man as he took a shot trying to deliver that football and it'll be second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again looking for a man it's fer he finds his man they immediately call timeout time to preserve every second they can to try to rally here Le they'll throw it on first down just tried to ease it out here and it falls incomplete after the misfire now on second down they want to just keep throwing it Fire's on the Move connection to the right and chunk plays are the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes the stop from the Red Zone looking for a receiver they're bringing Heat just had to get rid of that one good job to avoid the loss this defense is showing the Spartan spirit and they are swarming I mean they're making them earn everything nothing giving up free playing so good at all the levels of the defense I from a Michigan State they get enough rush and it pays off the sack at the 20 time out called by the offense and now they just have one remaining in the half fires deep toward the end zone fires into traffic picked off trying to take it back and they capitalize not only on the pick but on the great return to improve this field position that should be the nail in the cin what a great break on the football getting the big turnover you got the lead now just go out there be smart on offense and run that clock the Spartans have it back on offense hoping to play some good ball firmly in control with this game we'll see if they just try to run out the clock and get out with the victory everybody on offense here should feel really good about their performance today too David they had a really good game plan coming into this one they went out and they executed at a very high level yeah lights out and this game's over interested to see the philosophy now do we keep chucking the fill and keep trying to score points cuz it's the defense's responsibility to stop them or do they just run this clock and say all right we did enough today we kick them in the face they've got first and 10 at the 50 throwing right he's got it and this offense is feeling it as they rip off a big chunk of yardage and they've got it on the 22 see what they dial up on First and 10 looking to pass it's child buying some time as he moves left got some room headed to the goal line and he waltes in for the score Dodge down Spartans these guys looking to put the finishing touches on this game with that score yeah I think you feel confident that ends it right late in the game it will take a miracle for the defense to get back in and that Miracle is no longer coming [Applause] now on to attempt the try KCK on for the extra point and the extra point splits the upright and they're up a 43 touchdowns a 21-point cushion in the fourth they're just about ready to kick it away ATL he'll take the return try to get better field position he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 FAU has it back as the ows offense will go back to work this offense needs something to feel good about it hasn't been very productive today Jesse well I think it's just important they stay aggressive try to throw the football and just see what this quarterback can do here at the end of the game to build confidence for the next time they take the field yeah and there hadn't been much good today but uh build confidence sure but just show your team you're going and the quarterback is knocked down back at the 13 now they've got to hustle to the line and get [Applause] set on Third and long no secret what he needs here and this is just one of those days man where everything has gone wrong right like they just haven't been in a rhythm they haven't they haven't got it going and never built the momentum this is this is one of those days you learn from you try to grow from a lot of things that were going to shot and they get to him and sack the quarterback and they'll stop the drive on Downs there's not many play calls on the sheet to score a bunch of points really quickly so you got to go for it here I like the aggressiveness but this offense used to miss the mark and they just got to score more points they got to do better right Palmer that's expert analysis they got to do better off the play fake on first down to throw and the ball comes out what a disastrous play and the defense jumps on it they get that turnover and the defense able to get pressure to the quarterback and they've got everybody trying to swipe at the football and the impact on the hit sometimes jars the ball loose great job with the pass r a better job forcing a turnover looking for a productive play on first [Applause] down he's going to pass not much of a chance there he just had to get rid of it to avoid the sacks now on second down after the incompletion to the air it's fer and that's just a flat misfire not even close to his receiver and here we go final play of the game right here cornner showing press they want to be physical here they're trying to get to it and the quarterback caught up two and sacked at the 12 winning those individual sixc battles every Play Time After Time After Time After Time and that leads to a victory here and I love when teams go out and play like it's sudden death like if they lose the game they're entire season is over this game wasn't for the national championship but would you wouldn't know that watching this winning team David tremendous effort and tremendous execution I love competitive people I love competitive coaches I love competitive teams that they know that their job is to go out and get a w no matter how no matter where you play you want to play in the parking lot we'll go meet you great job of this team being ready getting the W so that's going to do it
