is a fun time for those of us that grew up in this area and seeing the guys that uh we used to watch a lot yeah nowadays you hear about how players support different sports in the same city how much did the world champion Dodgers support the world champion Lakers in the 80s yeah a lot and even before then I mean this has been a deal um I used in high school my uncle I mean we were big big everybody fan in in La my uncle would say hey look uh especially the Lakers going into into the the playoffs he said look if you drive downtown and they played to the sports arena at the time if you go down and buy the tickets I'll pay for them so I'm in high school so I got up early in the morning I I drive downtown stand in line to the sports arena be able to get the tickets and then be able to get to school on time so that was that was the big deal in fact uh we start to talk about guys that have had played the game um we went to a game my uncle and I did it's Santa Monica then Santa Mon City College to watch a basketball game it was the UCLA freshman team that was playing and so we see them come out UCLA and they're coming out to uh another guy it's a big basketball fan Kenny landro just walked into the booth so anyway we're seeing this guy come onto the onto the the court I'm thinking watching him is okay he's shooting pretty pretty well but you know I said oh that must be the coach's son because he was not anywhere near the height as the other guys well then we saw him play the game and I go oh my goodness look at him play the game it was Gail Goodridge Stumpy yeah and that was his freshman year in watching that so these guys were were people that I looked up to when you talk about Kareem and you talk about James Worthy and you Michael Cooper and the guys that are here tonight for me that's like a visitation back to to earlier years years when uh it was a big big deal the sports as it still is you look at all the sports teams now here in Los Angeles we're really blessed to be able to to pick and choose and and see what's going on a lot of the role players for the Lakers are on top of the Dodger Dugout right now but would you compare a Kenny landro to a Michael Cooper he was one of the very vital role players that used to get some big starts and caught the final out of the 81 World Series he caught the final one and then he jumped into the air after he was able to catch it he's standing here humbly kind of putting up with us but I also noticed that he's wearing a ring that I have a matching a matching ring from the the world championship in in in 1981 you'd be very proud to know my uh eight-year-old son told me he does not like the Yankees oh I love him even more because I grew up that way uh with the exception of Mickey M and then I got to play against M I think it was his final year we were or final two years and then we were on an All-Star team together my first All-Star Game and uh to have Mickey Mano call you by your first name I'm going oh my goodness so what is what does this come to that's a pinch me moment similar to last night with show Otani how many times have you heard me say when you come to the ballpark you never know what you're going to see and none of us have seen what we saw last night and that was for Shi Otani becomes a 4040 man here's the other part too he's the first one to ever have 4040 and accomplish both of those num numers in the same game he had his 40th stolen base that came in the fourth inning and then he had his 40th home run a grand slam walk-off that was in the bottom of the ninth inning and by the way for show Otani would you believe that was his first career walk-off home run and it's number 40 of the season and it's a grand slam we'll see what he does to top it tonight Rick we'll where I am um been a great group of guys and a great Clubhouse to be a part of one of the best pitches the Rays have in their rotation despite my tweet I feel shamed now no you're good you had to do what you got to do it's your job no no no it's okay it's okay I don't need the spotlight you got BOS and Taj uh and they're throwing the ball really well so it's been fun to watch you're having a great year too 19 starts your ER a is below 4 3 and A2 in a tough AL East your whip I don't have to tell you how have you been able to navigate such a tough division um I don't know I think a lot of it was uh starting here in Los Angeles you know a tough division here and then going to another tough division um just kind of feel like it prepared me a little bit and then the pitching staff and Department over in Tampa has been has been great and just continuing the efforts and just keep me throwing the ball in the zone and letting guys get themselves out it feels like young guys when they get traded it kind of makes the the match ation process speed up a lot do you feel like you had to grow up really quick after being traded um I don't know I feel like I kind of grew up a lot between my first and second year here in La um but I think going through that whole experience and you know getting to spring training and meeting everybody getting down there early so I could get acclimated to Florida and get acclimated to everyone um staff wise and and the team um really helped but I think just going there and just fully buying in and just trusting what they had and what they saw in me and believed um really helped what's it what's it like to be with the Rays Kevin cash and their pitching coach I heard is amazing does it feel like you just put on a different uniform but it's the same process yeah a lot of stuff was similar I think a lot of just the main difference is maybe just the way things were messaged um you know stuff here in Tampa is very simplified um cash is great U really supportive you know he's he's always pulling for us and uh wants us to do our best and then sn's on the pitching side and the rest of the pitching Department they've been great they're just doing whatever they can to help help us continue to get better each between starts Ryan pepio is our guest in front of first pitch between the Dodgers and Rays pepio is not pitching in this series he'll be pitching in Seattle against the Mariners but it feels like the change up and everything else is still very Ryan pepio this year yeah been throwing a lot of change UPS um fast wasn't good um slider mixing a little cutter know more lefties and then uh we talked about a five pitch mix the other a couple years ago um and have about the curveball back so um a little bit of the grip change that they help me and Tampa with so just you know tinkering things and adding extra tools to the toolbox how much are you keeping tabs on some of your former teammates like Gavin stone or Bobby Miller are you watching those guys yeah absolutely you know you go through the minor leagues you go through seeing those guys get called up you go playing on the same team you obviously want to follow all your buddies you know you you go through a full season you go through the grinds of an actual season with all those guys you really get to know them because you end up spending more time with them in your own family so just being able to see the success that those guys have had and obviously I'm going to keep tabs on them because they're my buddies and I want them to do well you know you always want your friends to do well I'm sure you're the guy that is least surprised that Gavin Stone was able to make this jump what is it about Gavin stone that he has such a even Keel personality he's always been that way um always been even Keel always been stone cold is uh so you know he just goes out there and pitches you know I think similar to me my first year you know you kind of get your teeth kicked in a little bit you kind of learn from it and you know sometimes you need need that experience to you know make the correct adjustments to see that when you do have some success your stuff does play in the big league level and at this level and just to watch him go out there and you know take what he learned from last season then go and have a stellar season like he is this year it's it's been fun to watch from far when you're part of a staff like you are with the Rays you guys have some pretty good young pitching and also next year you're getting back Shane mclanahan so the future is even brighter with you part of it what's it like getting to know some new pictures about the way they go about things yeah it's it's cool cuz you know coming from here he had a lot of guys that you can bounce ideas off of especially with kers and Walker and Tony D all the guys in veteran presents and then you go over the Tampa and you got the young guys like BOS and Taj and then you have Springs and Rass and and Shane because Shane's over rehab in in Tampa so he's there every day so you know you get to bounce ideas and you get to learn stuff that I learned here and then also stuff that I learned from the guys in Tampa and just take ideas from every single person and you know fit what makes work for me and um maybe take a piece from one of the younger guys take a piece from somebody who's been doing it for a while and um you know make it my own before I let you go I was at Brad Paisley's bar when Eric neander and Andrew fredman made the trade to send you to Tampa Bay I got to know neander that night he seems to be a great guy and really cares about his players have you had that experience with him yeah absolutely Eric's been awesome um one of the first people to call me when everything went down and really just made me feel like I was at home um really made me feel and my wife make us feel like we're coming to a good situation and really eased our minds when everything was kind of going crazy um so you know I'm really thankful for him and all the effort that he put in um to make us feel comfortable and welcomed um because without that you know I would have been going crazy in my mind um but he's been great nothing but nothing but great things to say about him hey I watch more rais games now than I ever did in my life but I only watch them every fifth or sixth day when Ryan pepio is on the mountain and I'll be watching on Monday night you can't forget about Johnny and Club too you know you got other people come on now I want to see that blonde stash of Johnny Duca oh it's there it's there he did shave it off for a little bit but it's back it's back I get to watch Duca when you pitch that's when I check in yeah there you go there you curveball by just this much he was just under it it was a towering drive to the warning track in right field but all it was was an out and the Dodgers came up a buck short tonight in Extra Innings they were down a early 4run hole in the first inning because Clayton kers shot through 32 pitches and just wasn't sharp in that inning so they found themselves down 4 nothing before the seats were even warm let's head downstairs right now to hear from manager Dave Roberts on what was off with kersha that first inning you know first inning I think it was just he just wasn't sharp I don't think the curveball um to that Lefty La um you know was up um there were some sliders that were up you know couldn't put put hitters away and they were you know putting balls and Away balls and play that Luka DeLuca B um so I think that it just he wasn't sharp early and then it just seemed like there was a sense of urgency in the sense that he was kind of his Tempo got quicker and he was getting quick outs they were putting the ball in play and uh it was it was huge that he at least got us through the fifth inning when you look at the bull p and I guess specifically with Joe Kelly how do you I guess you know describe some of just those I don't know inconsistency is the right word but just kind of spe up and down um that's a good question um you know his last two were great efficient strike throwing uh today he left a slider middle middle 1-1 hit it for a homer gets the first out um drew the infield in I felt good about the matchup and he's just got to go out there and make pitches and he left a slider um you know good pitch to hit so as far as inconsistencies I just don't know that answer you know I think that there's sometimes he comes in and he's lights out and other times uh you know he labors um so you know I don't know if it's something we got to dig into or you know what it is but yeah I mean it's it's certainly been inconsistent okay yeah yeah I just think that for me um I wanted to put the best defender of left field in there and you in a one- run ball game I just felt that you know CT in that spot is a better option all right there's manager Dave Roberts and I can explain a couple of the things that he was talking about right there uh why is Joe Kelly inconsistent I could tell you why when he's not throwing his curveball a lot in games that means his arm's not
