along with my partner Chris Singleton I'm John shamby the first half of the All-Star break is behind us and partner it's go time in the second half and if you want to be playing meaningful games at the end of September you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks all right we'll be back to give this one started after this just about set to go now today's starting pitcher Charlie Morton but Chris he hasn't exactly been Stellar here on his home now well I'll say this every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans in front of the city and you know this guy no different he wants to be more effective here so you know you look at the numbers they haven't been great at home I'm sure he wants to that and we'll see if he's able to start that in this one CJ ABS the lead off as he at ball one and a big swing of a Miss he reallys the change up with that arm action that one finds the zone and the count one and two and another ball the pitch right side hard hit marfield to first in time one up one down as we take a look at the Nationals lineup they do a lot of things well in this offense singy they control the strike zone they make pitures work hard for outs and as a result one of the better OBP teams in the league well what I love about it is it's an organizational philosophy whether you go to instructional League whether you go to spring training you see these guys even during batting practice when it doesn't matter they're practicing that type of approach Boo and when you have that filtering through the organization even when you call up a player he steps right in and continues with the pattern that they have established at this level which ultimately leads to a lot of success that misses two and0 you know you translate on base percentage it's basically this teams that have a high on base percentage they don't make outs at a very high rate as my buddy Joe Sheen says OBP is life that's in there right through there for a strike one out base is empty got him looking for the [Applause] K and now it's Juan YZ it's been a tough stretch for him at the plate barely hitting over the Mendoza Line this month swing and a liner foul off to the right two out Bas is empty check swing went around and it's and two bounce to the left side Ella throws to First Nets go down one two three and the Nationals gone in order and now the Braves will get their first crack at it no score it's major league baseball and it's on the show and we're back and on the hill in this one Jake Irving maybe a little pedestrian there in terms of the but with those numbers you expect to be in a game and have an opportunity to win and really that's all his teammates can ask for so we'll see if he's able to be consistent in this one ready to go for the last half of the in and here is Michael haris we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offensive side for just a second Chris it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most the pitch well he gets to balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there are certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team hit it thinks that they've got a basee hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away the next offering misses ball one swings through that one it's a strike out very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner when two strikes you just strugle to put theall in you don't have to get a hit at that point you can help your team just by reaching on an ER but some way got to find a way to short enough to swing and put the ball in play next time and that one is lifted in the air and there's two down and let's take take a look at the lineup singing the numbers tell us this is an offense designed to swing it they're not going to force a ton of action on the bases and so obviously that is one of the focal points that we'll look at and you look at the quality of the adats because of the fact that the legs aren't a part of this game they have to be very selective look for long pitch counts grinding out at bats and really barrels to the baseball because it's a lot easier to jog around the bases than for these players to Sprint righty [Music] delivers and a curb is down and in two ball no strike that one misses and it's three and0 let's see if he gives him anything to hit here foul ball there swing and a line drive curling foul down the right side and down on strikes and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down two three end of one and we're still scoreless and welcome back to the and now it's Luis Garcia back to work fouled off he was late Morton the tall righty 25b and he was a third round pick back in 2002 now inside and it's a ball and a strike time to look at our umpiring crew in this one Kenny Jansen behind the plate yeah and expect a little inconsistency on the corners he doesn't make any wild calls but he does give and take there a little bit so he doesn't have the easiest Strike Zone to figure out especially as the game goes on when you're expecting it to become more consistent look like you got a little excited on that fast got to think to yourself want to stay up the middle that way if you're a little bit early you hit it out of the ball L opposite field not and another ball up the middle throw on to ol lead off man retired here in the second and now it's keber Ruiz right through there for his strike the key to his success is getting ahead early in the count he cannot afford to go deep into counts doesn't have a ton of swing and Miss stuff so he's going to have to work efficiently and that one missing low so a foul ball makes it one and two and another ball two balls two strikes wouldn't chase that time one down base is empty got him looking that's a strike out well just couldn't pull the trigger on the fast right there and I don't think he was taking it thinking it might be a called ball or anything I just think was flat outzen did not that location in my opinion J stri and a pitch misses inside I think it's very important to establish the inside part of the plate early guy's fast but you also have to be aggressive and ready to hit in your zone now you're in a tough spot next offering is downstairs it's a good take KI andand on the ground of first chaparo steps on rander kick Steals and now te up and that's in the dirt and a pitch swings and misses on the fast up in the zone for the strike out off to a strong start S as he's punched out three of the first five he's faced well he's definitely minimizing contct he can get the swing and miss when he needs it but he'll also keep the defense fresh behind him allowing BS play as well laano comes up the hit I'm liking what I've seen from him at the dish lately hitting better than 350 this [Music] month and the righty deals [Music] and that's in for a strike and that's off the Inside Edge and the count is two plate one ball two stri that one misses in the dirt great lay for the hitter that one almost got him battling here as he fouls it away knocks that one away and we'll do it again popped up foul territory behind the plate Ruiz calls it in and there's one away good the right there they really good com here's or and that one a little below the knees and it's w to know on the ground tosses to First and straight set down to begin the bottom of the third back to the top of the lineup Michael Harris now at the plate he's struck out swinging at his first back and that one pulled foul two down bunch of outs can they turn that and stay within the Zone we'll see but I think they have toes the catch for the out and there's a one away up now for Washington James Wood caught looking his first time up and ball one strike one well we call that keyho even though it's right there and looks pretty good if he doesn't love it he's not going to swing that early in the count one down base is empty now the right hander ready to go still no score imately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter that one finds the zone two right now he may have not liked either of those first two pitches or agreed with the UMP calls but at this point he's going to have toar down and be ready to hit close to the zone now one miss swings and misses struck him out Travis Dar getting ready to hit his firstat was a strike out takes low for ball one swing by dar oh that one lift it to left high and deep back there get out of his 14th of the just like that they move in front it's one he absolutely feasts on shot just couldn't quite pull it off it would have been a stunner if he did so one out nobody on and now the right fielder Ramone lauriano B and there's a ball the one just missed Urban maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run Chris yeah it seems that way you know guys they can come out feel good but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitch they're not trusting their stuff that's through there for a strike well he's been good for the most part is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit oh partner every picture is a little different I I liking it to you sometimes you come in and you're not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show uh so perhaps it's the same with him nobody really wants their Rhythm broken up but sometimes they need a little pickme up and the pitch and that's too high ball four a great back and forth and that bad he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it ban with a orella on it first with two down and a foul B is alive left hand batter weights pitch in the dirt and that's ball two that one the other way and he can't hang on to third he pulls into as a r open early here comes the pitch F off foul and A1 right through there for a strike action in the pen down there djd up and throwing number 48 getting cranked up as well two outs fights it off he'll see another the pitch that one off the mark two and two two balls two strikes swing and a miss struck him out and that'll keep more runs from coming in inning over so they get three runs on four hits one was the solo Homer we're headed to the fifth it's the Braves three and the Nationals nothing and welcome back to the ballark we go to the top of the fifth now it's the second baseman Luis Garcia Morton back to work inside almost got him after scoring runs this is where you're looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats misses just off the outside edge I think that was a strike next pitch way upstairs now three ball count down in the ball game you've got to be very selective take your walk if they'll give it to you in the air left side sizes this one up makes the grab and there's one down now cat and now the catcher comes up to him Hebert Ruiz struck out looking in his first at bat that one is absolutely beled and it's a one hopper Off the Wall should be extra bases Ruiz into second and he's got a double that started and ended pretty quickly no messing around right there a really nice ban swing on it and when you can one into the Gap like that you're thinking extra bases from the first couple of steps out of thex he'll feel real good about that one Jose tenna digging in for the Nationals struck out swinging his first time and a foul ball pitch misses and it's one and one one out and a runner at second and we're at the top of the F boots in and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score Runners on the corners with one gone and now for Washington Andre chaparo flyed to right his first time in there for strike one in this situ with Runners you got get ahead you can dict the rest of the at nice job right there now this is in the air down the line he's got it Runner tags for home it's a sack fly as he comes across the score and now just a two-run deficit well that's a quality at bat right there you know the situation you need something in the and deep enough and that's exactly what he did good pass to the Bas and now it's Joey G for one he struck out swinging last time base hit center field throw stops the lead runner at second two on and two out well clearly he was ready to hit right there absolutely smok that baseball what a swing sent it out way faster than it came in of course 113 off theat and no matter where you hit it at that speed it's t to make a play first and second two down and now the center field he's over for one first offing misses badly for ball one two on two outs and fouled off the pitch here's the strike up high now one and two [Applause] that's foul off to the right side keeps the ab going well he knows they don't want to give him anything to hit but when you got opportunities to drive in runs you've got to expand the Zone he's capable of going out there and doing damage with it next pitch misses way outside this one popped up settles underneath it squeezes it and that's the third out one run in the inning but they leave two last half of the fifth coming up it's the Braves three and the Nets one back here at Atlanta we head to the bottom of the fifth now in for the Braves Marcelo Zuna the wi to the pitch in his 11th season 33 years old and he was born in the Dominican Republic the pitch he swings and fouls one off there's a pitch we haven't seen in a while it's going to be tough on the hitters if he can mix that in whenever he wants the2 keeps the back going with a foul ball and they'll do it again really great change of speeds he goes off the off speed to The Fast and The Hitter doesn't know what's coming next not close with that one and the count one and two would chase that time out towards Right Center that's well struck and a gigantic blast and they add a run it's 41 that one just sounded different yeah might have been the loudest moment yet man my ears are ringing can feel that swing from the [Applause] booth it's like he's playing that's not the easiest to hit a home OPP field the Gap making it easy that's [Applause] for on the pitch now for the Nationals DJ herd and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed relever from the pin with the Lefty hitter coming up I think it's a good move I know I never liked when opposing team did that to me and now Matt Olen up to hit that one not close and that is ball one late with the swing there always exciting to see a late off home run and an inning kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning one run across in the frame so far last half of inning number five and the ball Le Count that's where you want it's a good Miss Off the Mark there and the counts [Music] full payoff pitch F off again and it remains three and two the line in the pitch left field [Applause] base show some really nice patience in at into a good anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you Barrel straight to it that's great work right there Dar the next to hit takes ball one and that's downstairs and outside the pitch that one in there across the letters and there's a foul ball just missed really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where missed probably doesn't agree appears he ready to move on to the next pitch kicks called a strike he's really working that inside corner with the cut tell you what I hated that pitch so tough to get the barrel to and to keep it fair good eye right there and that one is lifted in well as good as things can be it can be a tough day at the office even for the Skippers seeing the offense just sputter not able to get anything going next one misses and now it's even one and one and another ball and it's a three up three down Inn doing here this half top of the order du up in the home half of the six it's the Braves five and the Nets one now on the M for the Nationals number 48 he's aaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season and that's not where you want to be at all so we'll see how he does here Michael Harris digs in Now sing you got to appreciate a guy who's this good defensively I mean watching him track balls in the Outfield it is beautiful and first off ring is fouled off he's so solid calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air and you just automatically assume that it's an out every time it's hit in the air good eye in that spot there's one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman Alex Gordon and then became an elite perennial gold Glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals but he's a guy when you watch him play you would imagine that that's all he ever played in his life was the Outfield live Drive H and the lead off man [Applause] aboard and next for Atlanta Whitfield one for three and that one fouled off yeah some guys just have instincts right I mean that's the way it goes we talk about Larry Walker the Hall of Famer and his Instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn't play a ton of baseball as a kid check on the runner Harris back in on a dive remember Mark Kat was a real good defensive outfielder good instincts not great speed now the oan and downstairs yeah and I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true that's to third tenna wide throw and it gets away Marcelo Zuna will hit next he's already homered in this game off the pl well don't count look for him to be aggressive here you got some Runners on base and opportunity to catch a mistake and put some runs up on the [Applause] board next offering is foul back [Applause] second here no outs and that's outside two and one could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch coming two and one now outside good pitchers make pitches in big situations and right here the middle of the order hit her up runner in scoring position he's got to find a way to throw a quality strike next Al in there for a strike three and two Nows play opportunity here You' got to lay off pitches down in the zone right there swinging at that pitch that's a no no that one RI way back there say good out of that one another Homer his second home run of the game and they tack on to their lead it's 8-1 when you're it's so critical that you move the ball around change speeds even try to trick the hitter at times but when you give up a home run right there manager doesn't have a lot of patience because the velocity is not there to overcome and get the swing and [Applause] miss and now it's Matt Olsen's turn to hit in the air out to Center car it and there's one down a good recovery though after giving up the Home Run not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that now it's the Atlanta catcher Travis darno he's already Homer here in this one first pitch misses that's a little bit [Music] low righty [Music] delivers down the right field line and a base hit so a man aboard now with one [Applause] away well they call that an advantage count for a reason so much to get something you can handing thatch now on the B for the Nationals number 53 be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the score just doesn't have the same intensity to it but he's got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score man at first now in for the Braves Ramon laurano he's been a great free agent side in there for a strike at the bottom of the zone darno the base runner at first with one out and that's a base hit they fired in quickly so it's first and second with only one away how let that his nice job of going the other so now to the plate for Atlanta Jared keler and the first pitch misses for ball one already three runs across in the frame here in the bottom of the six next offering is in for a strike activ in the Washington Bullpen Jacob Barnes looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez late that time and it's strike two one two fights that one away still one and two got him swinging that slider wasn't even close to the strike zone and he got him to chase that's just a bad approach right there either he was looking for something else and got completely fooled or he was sitting all over the slider and just couldn't resist the temptation but man really expanded right there and didn't have a chance of making contact with that pitch Ella at the plate now that's ball one nasty back door slider there's really nothing you can do with that if you swing at it so that's a good take by him and the pitch foul ball there the pitch and it's foul away two outs couple of base runners at first and second and another ball two chase that time that's a really good take right there slider down and in very difficult to get the and do anything with at the belt fires got him looking that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand Atlanta gets three on the Homer it's now eight to one you're watching Major League in andrees chaparo picked up an RBI and his last still their only run of the game so far first pitch doesn't find the Zone tenna off of first with two away in the dirt nice job behind the plate there activity in the bullpen re Lopez appears to be getting ready and I'm sure he's feeling some nerves this would be his major league debut Chavez warming up as well two outs right through there for a strike in today's game not that many fast counts but hitter still in the back of their minds they're looking for one two change up call right there excellent pitch selection to go with next offering in there for a strike that is strike two on the ground right side he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it Nationals leave one it's still an 81 ball game set for the last half of the seven now for the Braves Orlando Aria the Lefty fires here's a strike the short stop takes the ball one ball one strike that's Off the Mark ball two and that's in for a strike well looks like he's wanting to work the upper part of the strike zone what does that mean Top Hand better be working for the hitters adjust that side a little bit give yourself a chance to hit and now the Lefty good job to fight that one off the pitch ground ball right side and he takes it himself for the out up next for Atlanta theer so the lineup flips over now the leadoff spot for the Braves Michael Harris no matter what you're playing this kind of rival take your game to another level and that's downed away one Bas is empty one away here the bottom of the seven breaking ball inside and now two and0 there's the strike of the knees nasty two slider there for a strike that tells you he's got a lot of confidence in that pitch one down base is empty right back to him on the mound tosses to first two up two down the number is empty and next for Atlanta Whit mareld and first off ring is fouled off two down nobody on that misses it's a ball in strikes well two outs and a chance to put up a zero on the scoreboard here and that's not something that's come easy for this staff in this one sh off the outside edge and it's two and two on a line base Jo get on base keeps it going patience and discipline paid off there line like that at the plate doesn't come naturally for most hits and now it's the Braves DH Marcel Zuna looking for his third home run of the game yeah he blast his second of the game in the sixth inning scy looks like he's playing on beginner mode in this one beginner mode is where it's at Chris right through there for a strike hitter showing so much versatility understanding the situation gets on base with two out to bring possibly the best hitters in this lineup up to the plate in this inning and here it comes he swings and fouls one off and now one and two center field under it and that is that one left for Atlanta and it remains an eight to one game back here in Atlanta here's Joey Gallow still out there to pitch the eighth and working with a big lead he's been excellent really on his game in this one and at this point he wants to finish what he started one ball no stri just missed is there a debate to be had about shutting him down maybe to preserve some bullets given the score absolutely when you consider over the course of a long season guys putting a lot of stress on that elbow on that shoulder but you also have to pry the ball out of a hand of a guy like this because he's so competitive the wine of the pitch swing and a miss two balls two strikes [Music] righty to the plate foul ball another two two upcoming and that skips into dirt and the
