[Music] and welcome in everybody glad you're with us inter league baseball on MLB The Show it's the San Diego Padres taking on the Tampa Bay Rays first pitch coming at you right after the [Applause] break just about set to go Today's starting pitcher Taj Bradley Chris it's a little more common these days but still he's a strike out per inning type of guy well I hear you about the strikeouts a lot more guys striking out today but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out particularly when you need it a Man On Third less than two outs situations where yeah maybe you're not a real high strikeout guy but just knowing you have the swing and Miss stump in a big spot I think it's real critical and he's got it rander kicks deals that one not close one and one and he takes a strike and another ball [Applause] [Applause] flew open a little bit with that front shoulder but was able to slow his back down just enough to make contact with that pitch keep theat alive next offering upstairs [Applause] good plate appearance there able to take the walk it wasn't easy but he earned that walk after a long atat that's a nice job finding out that advat a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall Very gritty here's Donovan Solano just missed [Applause] the pitch nope profar gets his lead at first with nobody out and here comes in there at the knees it's two and two good zip on that fast at the bottom of the Zone if he's there all day it's going to be a tough one for the hitters and the curb is down and in still just the second batter of the inning and on the M he's already thrown 13 pitches they got him working hard out [Applause] there now a screamer into the Outfield he makes the gra let's take a look at the Padre's lineup this is an offense Chris that's having a hard time scoring runs right now yeah sometimes things just aren't going to click and unfortunately what happens is guys press they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game you've got to let the game come to you if you chase it it's going to run from you so this is a team that just needs to calm down relax and understand they're going to come out of this Jake cronenworth in the Box here lets that one go for a ball Cronin worth a seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that way and there's a foul ball back up the oh that got him safe at first and now after the play we'll check on the right-hander status catcher coming out to check on him it looked like it got him on his back leg so you'll wonder if that might be a problem for him in terms of pushing off the rubber yeah it's a great point and we'll have to see how he looks but to me it appears he's moving pretty well I think it's just going to sting for a while but hopefully nothing more here's Manny Machado I'm curious how he decides to attack on the mound this guy at the plate has been great hitting under pressure this year and that is in for a strike and it's all and one well all eyes on the double play ball in this no better way to get out of this inning righty delivers that one hammered but pulled foul Runners at first and second with one gone and we're just getting started here in the top of the first that's off the mark and the count one and [Applause] two it misses it's a strike out here's Xander bards just missed with this many pitches throwing here in this first inning I mean you're giving the other team a really good look he's going to have to find a way to get some weak contact maybe a swing and Miss get into that Dugout and hit the reset button and a pitch and another ball tough spot right here couple Runners on two ball count you can't nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch if you leave something out over the plate it's going to bring in some runs two on two outs and a foul ball makes the count two and [Applause] one and that's too high good pitchers make pitches in big situations and right here with the middle of the order hit her up runner in scoring position got to find a way to throw a quality strike swings and misses at the pitch off the plate I think you're sitting off speed [Applause] there two outs stays [Applause] alive pay off pitch popped up walls under it and that is that Padre's leave a pair and now the Rays will get their first average and that's a good thing in this case not allowing too many base runners so most days he's going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win and I expect to see that from him in this one today and stepping in for the ray yandi Diaz Diaz the why to kick the pitch that one the other way pulls up and in there for a knock I was watching his rounds during batting practice today so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel go back up the middle in the other way sometimes when you step in the Box during the game you get a little anxious and you get away from that but so far I've seen him stay consistent with his pregame preparation at the plate now for the Rays is the DH Junior Camero in the air center field Merill makes the grab one away batting third the left now a look at Kevin Cash's lineup for the Tampa Bay Rays this an offense Chris that's having a hard time scoring runs right now yeah sometimes things just aren't going to click and unfortunately what happens is players press they try to do a little bit more and they get out of their game you've got to let the game come to you if you chase it it's going to run from you so this is a team that just needs a calm down relax and understand that they're going to come out of this Dylan Carlson batting with one down takes a [Applause] strike and a pitch and a good eye [Applause] there here goes the runner swing and a miss thow a second tag and they got him I think that was a hit run right there when you look at how far that pitch was out of the zone and the hitter still trying to put W on it put it in play that tells you that they had something going but unfortunately there was a good job of execution by the pitcher and the catcher to get that out of the zone and then throw out the runner at second base really nice job behind the dish two out space is empty that pitch just misses the inside corner two and two it's a good take foul ball another two two [Applause] upcoming that one missing inside [Applause] oh yeah the wi to the pitch popped up McCoy settles under it he's got it and that is out number three nothing in the Tampa first on to the second now for Tropic still nothing nothing back now in Tampa Bay top of the second here's the rookie center fielder Jackson Merill Mar Bradley back to work High Fly ball right field low has it sized up and there's one [Applause] down that David peral at the pl David peral getting the start in right 36 years old and he was born in Venezuela fast ball for a [Applause] strike he one line drive he's got it and there's two away it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting a line drive that finds a glove but you will get some high five you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your [Applause] control Luis cusano stands in with two away as he takes a ball that missed by a lot two and0 two down nobody on he swings and fouls one off second inning here no score that Clips the [Applause] corner checks his swing now it appeal to First and he W around not an easy call there but that puts an end to the inning nothing doing here this half now to the bottom of the second no [Applause] score ready to go for the last half of the inning now up for Tampa Bay Josh [Applause] low now the rightand are ready to go still no score there's the strike he's been known to jump all over the first pitch so that seems like a missed opportunity right there there a foul ball swing and that ball smashed on the line Mero makes the grab one down that Jose cavier next to hit for the Rays one that you might not describe as having Elite level speed but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game first pitch doesn't find the Zone this guy's definitely a plus Runner but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time never takes a break it's guys like that even though they don't have the Elite Speed the fact that they're consistent with it they make moves on the base [Applause] passs now a dragma third base side grabs it barehanded fires to first it's there and that's a great play batting third B Christopher here's the third baseman Christopher Morell and first off ring is fouled off [Applause] the wi of the pitch that's outside and now it's even one and [Music] [Applause] [Music] one just misses the mark outside the zone really good take especially with two [Applause] strikes keeps the back going with a foul [Applause] ball got him looking and he did not like the call nothing doing for Tampa will move to the third with no score and we're back all set for the start of the inning stepping in for San Diego Mason McCoy McCoy line in the pitch inside corner that's a strike it's own and one and that one Clips the corner that's excellent location on the fast right there early in this game if he can do that all game should be a good Ting for struck him out looking well that was a pretty poor at bat he just never got the bat off the shoulder I mean you got to go up there looking to swing at some point especially once you're down 02 and at that point make an adjustment look to put the ball in play if it's anywhere close and I'm just not sure what the plan was there so the batting order turns over jerks in proar the next up for the padr great on that fast ball o and one top of the third no score and he's down 02 as he swings through it well he's been aggressive right out of the box and a smart pitcher is going to play off of that especially when you get to two strikes one b and that's outside O2 pitch that far out of the Zone gives the hitter a little confidence that maybe he can climb back into this atack [Applause] and a one two wouldn't chase that time one out Bas is empty three two [Applause] now gets a piece there we'll do it again one down base is empty on the ground to the left and it goes just [Music] foul swinging a Miss he didn't make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strikeout backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that's now three in a row yeah he's really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches throwing them where he wants to right now now so we'll see how long he can keep this streak going Donovan Solano the next up for the Padre's that one lifted to left Carlson makes the catch in and over home half of the third coming up no score set for the bottom of the third and here is Johnny Dela the right hter back to work and that's a little bit high and that's ball one one [Applause] and and a swing in a miss one and one back our way and that's out of [Applause] play the pitch this one lifted in the air left field and that'll get down for a hit hooked around that pitch on the outside but he was still able to square it up pretty nicely and that takes quick strong rist to out and now they got some speed on first so we'll see if they try to get him into motion so next to the plate for Tampa Bay Taylor walls ball one no strikes ball one no strikes DeLuca aboard here at first with nobody out in for a strike and the count one and two the two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here knocks that one away and we'll do it again [Applause] [Music] Short Stop takes the [Applause] ball hold out on strikes couldn't pull the trigger on a fast ball at the knees and here's the catcher definitely wants to stay out of the double play here ball on the ground in the infield should be an inning ending double play throw to first and he's back in there that's in there strike one this guy is just filling up the strike zone right now don't want to get yourself in an2 hole you better be ready to pull the trigger on the first pitch next offering is in for a strike quickly into an 02 count both pitches were down in the zone I think you set your sights a little bit higher because you'll have a tendency to chase if you look down in that area all interesting he's looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single back to back strikeout so they haven't been able to move that up get him in scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring I tell you good job so far on the mound he just needs one more out Diaz in the box now no balls in a strike started to swing held up two gone but the goahead run is at first here in the last half of the [Applause] third that's towards Center under it he's got it and that'll end the inning one left for Tampa and we're still knotted at zero and welcome back to the ballpark and now Jake Cronin number Jake and the pitch swing and a ball popped up catcher tosses The Mask settles under it PS it in for the out that was a good pitch to hit right down the heart of the plate and pretty good timing on it just got underneath a little bit and popped it up Mach here's Manny Machado now went down on strikes his first time through when you talk about Elite defensive third baseman this guy is at the top of the list start when you you look at Players like this you play that Hot Corner got to be pretty courageous over there with the way balls come off the bat that's the kind of guy that every year you expect to be in the All-Star Game and have a gold glove if not a platinum glove all tied up top half of inning number four so what are the skills you look for that make a really good defensive third baseman that Elite well Bo one of the things I think about immediately are just the feet does he have good feet is he able to quickly react and when you have Good Feet you've got soft hands and soft hand Defenders are able to make tough plays look easy one down base is empty foul ball still one and two [Applause] count righty to the plate gets a piece and stays alive kicks and and another ball this guy's a fun guy to watch taking it B he just battles up there he doesn't take a pitch off at all makes it so difficult on the pitchers out there you could tell they get frustrated with how long it takes to put him away got him looking and to away now man he have a stanky leg on that one right there that curve ball just locked him up here sander Bogarts now 0 for one so [Applause] [Music] far check swing but he went too far that's strike one hard hit right side Padres go down one two three nothing doing there for the Friars and we are still scoreless back here at Tropic field bottom of the fourth now it's the DH Junior cero the pitch and that skips into dirt [Applause] next offering is foul back and the pitch right side and a quick out number one now B no left this is Dylan Carlson he popped out his first time California Kid played for his dad at Elk Grove High School his teammates there with Nick Madrigal it's in there and that [Applause] strike B is empty one away we're here at the bottom of the fourth clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back just off the Inside [Applause] Edge swing and a miss pulled to string on the Chain J well that's always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count and as aitch allows you to start expanding The Zone hits become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that's what leads to the strikeout ground ball base now Joey gets on base and keeps it going went up there looking to be aggressive and got something he can handle once you get the ball by pitcher there's a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground balls nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit and now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on first cavier stands in now looks at that one [Applause] inside he swings and drives one out to deep left field and that one is going to go home run number 10 of the Year and that gives him lead it's two nothing he's so good at getting his arms extended and that's exactly what he did right there you don't typically want to pull a pitch in that part of the plate but he doesn't allow his wrist to roll over stays through the ball gets the Loft and gets the Home Run Morell adding for the second time and that's strike one well he's been incredibly efficient this one first pitch strike percentage over 70% that's well above League average and that's what's allowed him to pitch well up into this point right through there for a strike [Applause] swing and a miss struck him out slider got him for strike three the Rays with a two-run homer it's now a two nothing ball game it's major league baseball and it's on the show we go to the top of the fifth so digging in now for San Diego Jackson [Music] Merill as he turns on the rubber here with that good live arm delivers and the first pitch misses for ball one well after scoring runs this is where you're looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats next offering upstairs the pitch nope that's ins expect for that guy to come right at you with a fast ball something in the zone because he does not want to allow the lead off wall and that's ball than it's tough after falling behind a hitter two balls and no strikes but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter but he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with conviction Peralta stands in here leaves that one off the inside he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you'd prefer that pitcher work away kicks and fires swinging a foul over the screen and back out of play breaking ball inside and it's two and [Applause] one the pitch and strike swings throw it and that's a strike down that's about as nasty of a spitter as you'll come across especially in terms of movement that thing tumbles out of his hand and just drops off the table at the last moment he keeps it down it's just so tough to put W on next for the Padre's Luis cusano he struck out swinging at his first back foul ball there campusano goes 5' 11 in 230 lbs and he was a second round pick back in [Applause] 2017 here comes a pitch fought off foul Merill the base runner at first with one out a swing and a miss picks up strikeout number seven stepping in for San Diego Mason McCoy hisb if B was a [Applause] strikeout late on that fast ball just a bit there not sure if he had a hard time picking it up out of the hand or if he was sitting off speed that one fouled off the Padres trailing by two and we're in the top of the fifth next offering upstairs pretty standard High 02 fast right there if you're smart look for something down in the zone but not too far chase the fast up the ladder for strike three he continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books it's the Rays two and the Padres nothing back now in Tampa Bay we head to the bottom of the fifth here's a speed threat Johnny DeLuca the rander back to work and a curb misses outside ball one [Applause] and that's in the [Applause] dir up the middle Bogarts Fields it cleanly just got him and he was burning up the Baseline the batter number six and stepping in for the Rays Taylor walls struck out looking his first time strike one oh and one [Music] inside just missed next offering is in for a [Applause] strike look out and it hit him he had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch and now the cat for [Applause] the in for a strike one one man I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was musgrow throws over it's low he gets away man it first one [Applause] away the kick in the pitch Runner goes and there's a foul ball the2 got him and there's two away the first basem number two y Diaz now one for two you have to be careful throwing and breaking pitches even in an O count he loves going after the off speed St and he's really good at head over the first and he [Applause] Sav hey Clips The Zone going one all impressed that he went right after him on that first pitch that's the key try to get ahead in the count and you can play around a little bit more as they it bat expands two outs and that one fouled [Applause] off and he deals at the ball in the dirt but kept close well done behind the dish the pitch and a foul ball he stays alive well you can't really adjust your game plan for that last pitch guy hasn't thrown it very much you got to focus on the stuff that he's throwing up there most of the time lace down the line pick the extra bases walls around second headed for third coming home relay through for a base hit around third now a long throw home but it's up and it's for nothing comes through with the RBI just kept it simple play at the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there's just no one there to knock it down [Music] [Applause] out of the bullpen for the Padres Tanner Scott and we all know about a slider it's just filthy man and one of the better ones in the game I'd say spin rate's very high and it just breaks a ton now it's the switch hitting outfielder Dylan Carlson see the velocity 97 with that fast [Applause] ball next offering in there for a stke and it's O and two wow good luck catching up to that one and now the Lefty battling here as he fouls it away [Applause] at the belt and fires good job to fight that one off cero off of nothing top of the sixth inning now batting jerkson profile the W to kick the pitch out to short walls fires across the diamond P far is out well he's doing a nice job of keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution the rr's DH Donovan [Applause] Solano that one in there across the letters establishing both ends of the zone is critical most times guys are want to get hitters out down but if you can get them to look up get a called strike that's going to make that Strike Zone a lot bigger little bit low ball one one ball one strike hit in the air center field under it he's there he's got it two down now bat the first Jake now here's Jake cronenworth and it's foul away he one good eye in that spot two down nobody on and we're the top half of the six fast ball for a strike [Applause] left hand batter Waits got and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three make it six shutout innings for him out there now this is just part for the course these days huge fast balls coming out of the bullpen now one one Bullpen action for the Jason Adam appears to be getting [Applause] loose ball to strike just missed outside and now three and one [Applause] that one catches the corner for a strike hard grounder into the out field for a knock and the lead off man aboard now second stepping in Jose cavero he had a big swing back in the fourth the two-run Homer and that helped them get the lead and what a swing it was Boo poetry in motion and those are the type that you hardly feel when you connect with the baseball just so smooth a great feeling off the bat ball one no strikes this is one of those situations the infielders have to pre-plan and understand that the ball's got to be hit extremely hard right at them if they're going to have a chance to go for a double play Nobody out runner at first we just miss a swing and a miss and that's strike one two ball one strike and the pitch allall three in the dirt blocked and an excellent job keeping it right there runner at first with no outs here next offering is in for a strike good approach right there you want to get something just a little higher that you can Elevate stay out of that double play and a pitch that's fou off to the right side keeps the ab going the pitch fouled off again and it remains three and two outside and that is ball four that's a great at he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk the start to this inning he was hoping for on the mound now he's going to have to really dial it up against the part of this lineup to get out of this Jam Christopher Morell will hit next [Applause] and that one fouled off hit's got some good opposite field power what I like about something being hit to the right side into the Outfield is that the base runner second has a very good read and can determine whether or not he can score on that base hit and a pitch that one just misses his understanding the strike zone very impressive that was a very close 02 fast ball I just don't know how you take that bounced up the middle oh great stop throws from his knees close play but in there wow he did everything he could on that play with the throw from his knee but the hustle down the line was enough to earn the infield knock and that's a great baseball play all the way around now up for Tampa Bay Johnny DeLuca that's a [Applause] strike all loaded up here in the bottom of the [Applause] six May a strike out and you need a ball perhaps on the ground for a double play or get yourself a pop up something but you got to make some pit but if he can battle and get through this he can earn some [Applause] [Applause] points not even close there two balls two strikes definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside really think the outer half is open three wouldn't chase that time and a swing of the Miss and that is a big first out thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we're see more fasts in that location hitter especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger and the batter will be the short stop Taylor walls he's go for one late swing fouled off the pitch B that's just out this is situation where the hitter is looking for something up in the zone that he can get his arms extended what you have to be careful of is that pitch that's up that's in on your hands that'll pop you up in the infield and that's exactly what the pitcher [Applause] wants kicks and fires that one fouled off two and two low on third cavier at second Morel at first one gone roll to short possible two ball on to Bogart what a double play that was inning over just trying to sneak one through with the bases loaded but an excellent job by the defense to turn that one and get out of this Jam top of inning number seven and now it's Benny Machado the Padres in Striking distance but have some work to do boo it starts with the leadoff man need a good and bad out of him right here Bradley back to work and that's in for a strike I really like how he's been attacking hitters early in at bats he's throwing strikes on the first pitch to over 70% of the guys he's faced in this one and that's a little high [Applause] Smash down the left field line and it stays [Applause] Fair dominant performance for him today boo just two hits allowed so far no runs across either and he's had an answer for just about every hitter he's faced so I don't think this hit is going to knock him off his stride too much man at first Xander Bogarts digs in now hey and that's in there at the knees for a strike if you're going to get something going this is the time to do it you get the lead off man on everybody's got to look over the shoulder and say I'm just going to keep the line moving don't try to do too much headed down the line Carlson sizes this one up nabs it one down [Applause] the center number three Jackson Merill the next up for the Padres out towards Right Center that's well struck and no one can get there Machado around second around third he's safe a little more back spin on that instead of the Top Spin he's jogging around the bases rather than pulling up at second one out runner at second David Peralta the next to [Applause] hit foul ball there [Applause] swing at a hard hit liner up the middle to base [Applause] hit everything came together for him that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay [Applause] run on it first with one gone so digging in now for San Diego Luis cusano and that one is lifted in the air makes the grab and there's two [Applause] gone now B the short Mason McCoy at the batter now Mason McCoy who's over for two with a pair of strikeouts [Applause] [Music] that one is hammered right field low going back and CAU on the warning track two runs three hits no errors and one left Midway in inning number seven and it's time to stretch it's the Rays four and the Padre's two we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seven J Jason Adam just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game Adam and now the catcher comes up to three pitch strike out last time up got to put up more of a fight in this one and he deals and he gets that fast ball by him upstairs it might be time to choke up a little bit get that front foot down early maybe even just spread out he's really late right now and the pitch is in for a strike and the count is 0 and two righty delivers and it skips in swing and a ground ball out to short and one away in the bottom of the seven oh nice job by the short stop to field that on the back hand and gather himself get his feet underneath him he had a long throw but he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step secure the grip and finish the throw and here's the first baseman yandi Diaz and first first offering is fouled off and the righty deals the other way and that's a fair ball and that rolls into the corner now he turns and heads for second the throw in but he's in there easily putting some good swings on the ball that's his second base hit in this one you really shot that one down the right field line and somehow found a way to keep it from slicing foul one thing that was great about the approach his head was down all the way through the pitch and that's how you do it so man aboard at the plate now for the Rays is the DH Junior Camero man it's second swinging a foul straight [Applause] back righty to the plate and that's in the dir two strike and another ball Runner second here one [Applause] gone goes down looking for the strike out called strike three and a fast ball up in the zone just locked him up right there for the second out and that's the B he's probably going to be thinking about for a little while didn't pull the trigger not how you want to go down in an RBI spot so now you got to hope your teammate behind you can pick you up [Applause] Carlson in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike the pitch late on that fast ball I guess you throw it that hard you can get away with locations like that right down the middle but I still think it's a dangerous pitch don't want to do it again gets a piece there we'll do it again [Applause] and a swing and a miss the hattick that ends the inning the runs one hit no errors and a man left eighth inning coming up it's the Rays four and the Padre's two welcome back and a new arm of the mound to start the eight rasmo Ramirez well the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game some of them are just wired different so we'll see what he's got here here's the switch hting left fielder jerx in proall the pitch Ramirez a six foot righty he throws a cutter a sink a change up a for Seer and he occasionally uses a curve and the one0 profar gets a piece there here's a one-1 comes up empty that's count one no and a swinging a Miss I got a ball one [Applause] St w play over to first and that's a great play for the [Music] a next for the Padre's Jake cronenworth one for three fast ball for a strike and it's [Applause] one and the rander deals fouled off left side looking very settled on the mount here in the eighth one more out and they'll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead oh and Che now bals that off to the left and will do it again the 02 line and that's a base hit so a two out Knock keeps the inning Alive Now Machado up here corner
