to get started here and today's starting pitcher Grant Holmes Chris it's a little more common these days but still he's a strikeout per inning type of guy well I hear you about the strikeouts a lot more guys striking out today but when you consider having the ability to get that strike out particularly when you need it a Man On Third less than two outs situations where yeah maybe you're not a real high strikeout guy but just knowing you have the swing and Miss stuff in a big spot I think it's real critical and he's got it and a swinging a miss one [Applause] two the next pitch misses and the count is even two and two swing and a miss dropped him out and one away came inside with that two- strike fast B nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of Thee get around on it and catch it up front many times if you do it's a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don't like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they've got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put him away did a nice job right there P the string of the change up well anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to start an inning you got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction table Setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you're dealing with the number three hitter any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and instead of it being a solo shot it's a two or three run Homer and that's off the Inside Edge and it's two and [Applause] two this one popped up right side Olen makes the catch and that is that and the Nationals gone in order and now the Braves will get their first crack at it no score you're dialed into the show back at truest part getting the nod on the mound DJ hers and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him yeah and you don't want to be too quick to say that he can't pitch on the road sometimes you know it's just a matter of luck it's not having a field difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field don't know what it is but I know this he's got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we'll see what he's able to do in this [Applause] one foul ball still a one and two count and now the Lefty struck him out looking oh just excellent location on that inside fast ball really locked him up and it's a hitter it's not typically what you're looking for you're trying to protect away and then end so you can be a little bit tardy with two strikes hard to tell if he was fooled or if he thought it' be called the ball but either way that's a really nice pitch kicks and fires in the dirt re bow two [Applause] strikes swings through it and that's a strike out well there appears to be no problem settling in on the mound out there today it looks pretty tough to start this one punching out the first two hitters of this ball game and somebody's going to have to put the bat on the ball put it in play and get something going here's Marcelo Zuna and he chases that one below the zone pitch misses two and two I think he wanted that call on the upper part of the Zone but just didn't get it now he's just trying to get a better feel for how much it missed so he can adjust his sights just a little bit that's to third the throw to first and it's a one two three inning for the Braves and the Braves go down quietly scoreless after [Applause] one and we're back top of the second up now for Washington James Wood J rightand her kick steals this one popped up fouled ground first base side and there's one down that the first B one YZ here's Juan [Music] YZ Swang in a miss and it's one and two tear [Applause] ball just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great run around at first with one gone and now it's Luis Garcia next pitch is downstairs they'll score here in the [Applause] second swing and a miss Denny Jansen doing onplay duties in this one not a huge Strike Zone from Jansen so he can't really be called a pitcher umpire but he does like the bottom part of the strike zone we may see some pitchers steal a few strikes down there especially the ones right below the knees that's if their catcher can present it properly goes down swinging for the strike out hold the string of the change up he came out of his mechanics there typically likes to shoot the ball the other way but that time little [Applause] anxious next to hit for the Nets Riley Adams and a one1 and that misses off the outside [Applause] edge and a two- on hammered but foul righty to the plate still two and two after the foul ball and the righty deals and that one hammered way back there that one is gone he circles the bases third home run of the season and that gives him a lead it's two nothing Bo his plan was to hit the ball hard and he was going to figure out the rest later you can't argue with those [Applause] results knew what pitch he wanted to hit spent on some other pitches in this hit bat was very patient and it paid off so two away with nobody on here's the rookie third baseman Jose tenna that one is hammered right field laurano ranging back and it hits the fence safely into second he's got a double he absolutely ripped that ball out front and almost got it out of here man just a really strong balanced swing and a fraction of an inch different on the back and it is probably out of [Applause] here and here's the rookie center fielder and the pitch and that's in there at the knees for a strike and it's second just off the outside part of the plate it's a good take swing in the Miss and that is that two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run Homer and it's two zip we head to the bottom of the second and now Matt Olsen up to after scoring runs this is where you're looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats [Applause] chopped left side and that's just foul the one two stays alive and he deals battling here as he fouls it [Applause] away the pitch swing and a miss and he struck him out that's one out the bottom of the second so here's Murphy now that's outside two and one one strike one down base is empty now one fouled off two and two and a pitch foul ball left side he'll see another the Lefty fires just misses the mark outside the Zone really good take especially with two strikes that one R that's going back back some more out of here a massive home run it's his eighth home run of the year and they're on the board it's 2-1 he absolutely crushed that one no doubt about that one boo we knew it wasn't coming back well you can never fault a guy for going after a hitter in a 3-2 count he tried to challenge him but just didn't have enough to get it by him really good swing and a nice home run here's Jared [Applause] Kellick HS and misses it's a strike out way out in front of that inside pitch there just exactly the opposite kind of approach that you want with two strikes you want to let the ball travel make sure you recognize it try to shorten up so that you can at least put the ball in play clearly fooled but I think even more so you question the two- strike approach here's Orlando [Applause] arcia late on that fast ball one ball two strikes two down nobody on to the right side jeepz he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it but not before they answer back with a solo home run and it's now a 2-1 ball game back here in Atlanta top half of the third inning and now the right fielder Alex call [Applause] Pa tapped in front of the plate and one away in the top of the third here's CJ abrs to hit [Applause] foul ball one down base is empty that's outside and it's two and two that one just misses he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hitter coming up if he's [Applause] wed and here it comes twigs and misses it's a strike out pulled the string on the change up man I really like the ability to bounce back right there after not getting the call he probably should have gotten didn't let it affect his focus and he came back with another good pitch to get him swinging righty delivers ham that one deep left field and forget [Applause] it that was blasted to the Moon his first Homer of the year and they tack one on the board it's 3-1 that was blasted absolutely no doubt off the bat looks like this guy was looking out over the plate but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball so direct to the pitch absolutely blasted out of this ballpark base is empty with two away now the left fielder James Wood and it goes just foul two outs and another ball two ball two [Applause] strik cuts on it misses that's a strike out hold the string of the change up but the solo shot stretches their lead even further and this is now a three one ball game it's Major League inning showed some really nice patience in that in bad worked himself to a good count I don't know how he's able to shoot that pitch the other way and still put something on it that pitch was inside and he let it get really deep so pretty incredible hands to fight it off and still get good wood on it Whit marfield up to the plate at the belt and fires fought off foul and now it's one and two good eye right there gets a piece there we'll do it [Music] [Applause] again the two two on the way this one in the air center field under it makes the grab one down up next for the center field Michael so the lineup flips over and here is Michael Harris singy you got to appreciate a guy who's this good defensively I mean watching him track balls in the Outfield it is beautiful so how much does his speed factor into his ability to go get it it's heartbreaking for the hitter because off the bat he thinks this Ball's going to get down because of that speed and the ability to make up so much ground he enters the picture and breaks a guy's heart liner caught it second it's never fun going back to the Dugout after hitting the line drive that finds a glone but you will get some high fives you know when you make great contact you feel like you've done everything right but in this game of baseball not everything is in your control here's Ramone laurano here comes a pitch and there's a foul ball there's one guy that I can think about Boo who started as a third baseman Alex Gordon and then became an elite perennial gold Glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals but he's a guy when you watch him play you would imagine that that's all he ever played in his life was the [Applause] Outfield two two now and he chases that one that's the inning all they can't do anything with the lead off single there on to inning number four it's the Nationals three and the Braves W back at truest part on to the fourth and now the first baseman Juan YZ YZ yeah some guys just have instincts right I mean that's the way it goes we talk about Larry Walker the Hall of Famer and his Instinct on the bases despite the fact that he didn't play a ton of baseball as a [Music] kid the why to kick the pitch up the middle sends it to first lead off hitter retired in the fourth the batter number two second Bas Lu Luis Garcia will hit next remember Mark Kat was a real good defensive outfielder good instincts not great speed fast ball for a strike yeah and I figured you would get Kat into this because you had a free dinner at his house the other night that is true that just misses now two and two and a swing and a miss picks up strikeout number seven oh that's a blue zone right there or the cold Zone on the hitting chart just doesn't have much success in that part of the strike zone and a really good job of the pitcher executing try to go there as often as you can the numbers are in your favor next pitch is outside this is important if he can go one two three here will be a very pitch swing and a ball lifted in the air shallow left field wood pulls it down and there's two gone just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to left Jared Kelner next up for the [Applause] Braves H hard base hit throw stops the lead runner at second two on and two out couldn't have timed it up any better than that really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew hand allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws so two on with two away and next for Atlanta Orlando Aria and that one fouled [Applause] off come backer to the mound in plenty of time to First what a play inning over two left for Atlanta score holds it's 3-1 ready now for the fifth inning now the third baseman Jose tenna here's a 1-1 wouldn't chase that time looks like he's being a little cautious with him in this at bat after doubling the first time up doesn't want to make another [Applause] mistake next offering is down low a rare three ball count here he's been throwing strikes all day got to be ready to hit if you're in the box that one misses so a lead off walk boo do you think you could draw Walk In The Bigs if we gave you enough at bats that's a good question um I think that if they gave the pitcher a false scouting report on me yes I think I could draw one the pitch foul ball [Applause] there here's a one-w double play ball to second marfield off balance feed there's one over to First SA now here comes the skipper and we're going to see a pitching change in this spot GRT Holmes is done we'll be back in a minute with a new arm on the mound Spencer schwellenbach on The Pitch Out of the pen here pretty tight game so they're looking for Quality pitches out of them right here here got to do his best to keep the score right where it is so the Nets lineup turns over and the batter now Alex [Applause] call and the rander deals this might be a steal situation but that's not your average catcher behind the dish you have to be careful here and a pitch St Him Out Swinging some high cheese for strike three with that kind of velocity and elevated fast even if it's still in the strike zone can be tough for hitters to get on top of CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals check on the runner and he's back in safely [Applause] two outs run around the move swing in a Miss save at second and that was not close well they picked over once just before the pitch to check on him but that didn't seem to slow of his jump on the pitch at all I think that guy's been studying some video awesome job to be prepared got the timing down and he gets in the score position [Applause] right-handed reliever that's inside Andres chaparo would be next if they can extend the inning and he's homered already so I'm sure he'd love a chance to do some more damage here man on second two down got him working he battled for a long time but it finishes with a strikeout you can't be mad at yourself after an bat like that one the Braves pen comes through in fine fashion last half of the fifth coming up it's the Nationals three and the Braves one back now to start the bottom of the fifth and taking over on the mound Mitchell Parker he doesn't get a lot of strikeouts compared to other relievers soti on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him they'll have to be in their toes with him on the bump here's gior shelling up for the bra the third baseman J the pitch that one down the the line and foul ball and a ball in two strikes and another ball well he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here two two he's already seen the curveball couple of times in this at bat so might have it timed up and ready for it foul ball another two- two upcoming [Applause] got him and now one away here's the second baseman Whit marafield B is empty one away last half of inning number five next offering is in for a strike well in this one the offense has sputtered somebody's got to find a way to get on keep the line moving and manufacture at least one run then maybe you get two or three the wine of the pitch swing and a miss and that's strike out number 100 on the year very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he's faced at this one getting straight to work it's talked about a lot but relievers are just so electric these days he's aren't fun at bats if you're a hitter I'm so glad I'm retired so two down now and here is Michael Harris comes up empty that's strike two two left-and hitter Waits knocks that one away and will do it again two down dolman on just misses with that one got him swinging impeccable command in that one three batters three strikeouts that's electric stuff out there on the [Applause] mound and we're back now Andre chaparo Andre chaparo the one to one there's a strike at the knees and a swing to miss down on strikes looks like he's picked up right where he left off James Wood digging in for the Nationals having a lot more success on the road this season Bas is empty one away and we're the top half of the sixth and a swinging a miss one ball two [Applause] strikes that one misses it's two and two got him looking and he did not like the call well just couldn't pull the trigger on the fast right there and I don't think he was taking it thinking it might be a called ball or anything I just think he was flat out frozen did not expect that location in my opinion the wind of the pitch upstairs two out bace is empty [Applause] swing and a miss struck him out and it's a one two three inning nothing doing for the offense that time 23 four do up in the home half of the six it's the Nationals three and the Braves one well we go bottom six stepping in Ramone luran and now the Lefty towards first and he handles it himself for the out good slider inside right there batter fighting to get there just rolled over Marcelo Zuna the next to hit singing you can't ask for anything more this guy checks all the boxes offense he is the ultimate professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepares and gets ready for the ball game I tell you what his teammates feed off of the leadership that he shows on and off the field got it by him for the K and now it's Matt Olsen's turn to hit on L out toward Center makes the grab on the run and that's the inning Braves are set down one two three and they still Trail it here 3 to [Music] one back here in Atlanta and here is Luis Garcia Garcia [Applause] the wind in the pitch now and there's one away oh tough night at the dish punching out for the third time right there he just hasn't looked very comfortable with the pl a little unsure of his timing right now not picking up the spin and location of these pitches they'll have some adjustments to make and it's the catcher for the Nationals Riley Adams and he's already left his mark on this game he certainly has boo a two-run shot in the second inning and that made an early impact on this game in a big way one out base is empty just off the outside edge and that's ball two late that time and it's strike two when those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that he's got to get a better pitch to hit swings and misses seven in a row by way of the K Boi just ran out of patience there he took a couple of pitches to even that count up at two balls and two strikes but that time chased outside the zone two outs Bas is empty and now up for Washington Jose tenna this one ripped but foul to the right it's been a solid inning so far in relief getting them through this inning only down two could give their lineup a real opportunity to just grind their way back oh that got him he had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch two outs runner at first here's the center fielder you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the [Applause] list that front there as he swings through yeah we go beyond not just the you Fielding percentage and you know what it looks like but the ability to have a range and you and that'll do it so one left for Washington they still lead at [Applause] 3-1 we're back in new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seven Jacob Barnes well the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect the tight lead late in the ball game some of them are just wired different so we'll see what he's got here here's Shawn Murphy the break hog and the one thing about that is speed never goes in a slot and defense shouldn't either hitting wise you can struggle you can lose your mechanics but the thing that you can do consistently every single game is play play great defense if you're talented in that way and this is what this guy does next pitch is [Applause] outside and a good eye there that one called just inside I think and on the mound he's trying to get a little bit of an exclamation doesn't seem to be too bothered by it though but he clearly thought it clicked the corner in the air out towards Right Center in position and there's one [Applause] down the left number 24 jar now in for the Braves Jared [Applause] kelman the Nationals up by two here the bottom of the seven that's a la base hit the batter number 11 so down to the plate for Atlanta Orlando [Applause] Aria on the ground two ball to Second Abrams double play they can't seem to break through inning over well the second Bas made that one look easy great feed to the short stop Short Stop completes the play they get out of a jam and they end the inning we go to the eighth and now here's the Nationals leadoff man Alex call here's a one-1 swings through that one for strike two he can live up in the zone all game and hits will chase it that's just too much veloc hitters got to look down in the zone got him SL ugly cut on the slider for strike three third time and struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush he just hasn't looked very comfortable up there just one of those days but when you're still winning the ball game at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W that one ran inside almost got him way out front for strike two a tough day at the plate three strike outs already it's hard not to think negative but you got to find a way to somehow Center up the baseball and put it in play that's down and [Applause] in foul we'll see another payoff pitch face is empty one away and we're in the top of the eighth there's a swing and a drive and that's a fair ball now he'll turn for second and he'll pull in there with a stand up double well he's been having a hard time just putting the ball in play in this one so that should help soften the blow solid double down the line and that was a pretty decent pitch that he just turned on not really out over the plate it was inside but he was more than ready to get that bat through the Zone man it's second with one away andrees chaparo digging in for the Nationals swings through that one out in front that time Abrams the runner at second with one [Applause] away the punch out there two away the wood now at the plate man it's second runner takes off for third pitch in for a strike throw to third save very risky right there to try to steal third with two outs and a left-hander at the plate and there's an open Lane for that catcher to throw down but he gambl now he's at third 90 ft closer perhaps a ball in the dirt that gets away from The Catcher And they pick up run and another ball two outs with a runner of third Chopper right side he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it so no runs here in a base hit no errors and one left last half of the eighth coming up it's the Nationals three and the Braves [Applause] [Music] won back now new picture on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the eighth Tanner rainy and compared to a lot of other strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year so the defense should be active gior shella steps the third baseman [Applause] right through there for his strike just a really nice slider down and in there he wants to get the hitter Thinking Fast Ball speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement right Ander kicks Steals and it's even up meanwhile activity in the bullpen Kyle finnan the closer of the staff is thrown ferer also throwing [Music] [Applause] the pitch spoils that one and it remains two and two k sandio swing and a highfly ball down the right field line call drifts towards it and he can't quite get there it's a foul ball next pitch misses three and two now swings through that one it's a strike out you know you often think a slider more for that horizontal movement but most of the on have both vertical depth and that horizontal movement and that's what we saw right there good drop on the break and got him to swing over the top here's a one one and a foul ball the Braves trailing by two here the bottom half of the eighth inning and [Applause] downstairs that one misses and the Count's [Applause] full gets a piece it's stays [Applause] alive and the pitch foul off again and it remains three and two ninth pitch of the atat do next foul ball and it remains a full cow and he deals foul we'll see another payoff pitch and down on strikes he goes he didn't make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strike out this is exactly what you're looking for from your Bullen arm when you roll them out there to start a new inning hold on to a small lead just such a stabilizing effect and not only get the first two hitters but to strike them out that gives everyone on defense a big boost of confidence Michael Harris next up for the Braves looking very settled on the mount here in the eighth one more out they'll probably hand it off to their closer for the ninth with at least a two-run lead back foot slider ties him up struck him out down in order go the Braves and it remains a 3-1 ball game we're back it's the top of the night and there's a new pitcher on the M Pierce Johnson he last pitch two days ago and now it's Juan YZ the first Juan [Applause] YZ swag at a popup foul out of play off to the right side that'll find the stands kicks and fires fouls it off still one and [Applause] two on and Miss dropped him out and a strike out for the first out here in the nin Luis Garcia will hit next [Applause] one down base is empty and that one's a little bit low Full Count three and two really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed probably doesn't agree but it appears he's ready to move on to the next pitch here's Johnson fires swinging a drive deep right field that's back there and out of here a gigantic blast home run number 15 on the year and they add a run it's 4-1 that's their third home run of the game they're having a lot of fun at the plate in this one they've got the long ball working for them on autopilot a breaking ball on the inside part of the play requires a hitter to stay really square with his mechanics if you fly open with the crush shoulder there's no way you keep that ball fair and outstanding job mechanically he deserves that home run Riley Adams digging in for the Nationals a strike one ball two stri [Applause] Johnson fires two two one run acrossing the frame so far here in the top of the ninth sliced to right no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's two down the third Bas number eight Jose two out Bas is empty Jose tenna digs in now [Applause] ball to strike late on that fast I think he was sitting on speed there sit down on strikes a controversial called strike three to end the inning Nationals able to add on thanks to the long ball it's now a 4-1 ball game we're back and on the mound is the closer Kyle finnan should be a good first matchup for him here he's been doing a great job against right-handed bats so far this season they've had a lot of trouble squaring him up laurano comes up the hit for theak the right field Robo Lor righty delivers outside low and the count two and one two ball one strike the pitch and that's in the dirt three and two now and they'll do it [Applause] again cracks his Bat and Pops him off moving over as YZ to make the grab and there's one down boy that was a hanging breaking ball right there I think he tried to do a little bit too much sometimes those eyes can get really big I think his swing broke down as well and that's what caused him to pop it up two outs away and now Marcelo Zuna the one-1 and a foul ball Third Base [Music] side swing and a miss at the splitter and it's a strike out Bo if you can set up a good two strike splitter with the fast B on the previous pitch it's going to be so tough to recognize in adjust your swing to get a clearly had him reaching for it right there the Braves trailing by three we're in the last half of the ninth inning and that one fouled off one strike away good plate appearance there able to take the walk they're not ready to go home quite yet now P so two down and next for Atlanta Shawn Murphy Murphy this is a guy who is very highly regarded defensively fun to watch him control stuff behind the plate Good Game caller good at framing but it's that big arm that really stands out Olen leads off first with two down to the inning yeah and because he's got the big arm he pays attention to the running game and is sure to manage it righty to the plate and a swing in a miss and that is the ball game sometimes road trips can be tough you're away from your family but when you can win silence that opposing crowd it makes things just a little bit better makes the road trip just a little bit short 4-1 the final here today for Chris
