W to Arlington Texas at AT&T Stadium sight of this year's Goodyear cotton Bol part of course of the college football playoff we've reached the semifinal stage one last hurdle to clear before that national championship game and today we're going to find out who's got the toughness and the depth to continue their drive and keep Championship dreams alive as we'll see the number 12 seed in this playoff the Texas State Bobcats taking on the top seated team in the playoff the Alabama crimin and tied for EA Sports college football I'm Chris Fowler joined by Kirk herb Street and here we go a college football playoff semifinal which team will keep their National Championship hopes alive [Applause] today golf team out there we are back about to get cranked up for this semifinal collision and it's fielded return to trying to make something happened and the return will be brought down so Alabama's offense begins backed up here thanks to that poor return course the home of the cotton B in modern times has become at T&T Stadium a massive yet somehow intimate setting in C this of course is where the first championship game of the playoff era was played well who could forget that when Ohio State took Care of Oregon to win the national championship for Urban Meyer and this game like you said I think it just seems to get bigger and bigger in this setting the pressure these players feel let's see who can handle that the best today here comes the Jet Sweep trying to run it to the edge and they tackle him but not before he picks up the first a running play gives the offense fresh set of downs they're going to run it here they bring him down at the 45 at a solid gain to keep this drive going Alabama getting set with a first and 10 now looking to pass it's milro there's a shot toward the end zone tried to press the ball deep but it's incomplete offense getting set second down play here from the shotgun it's a handoff they test the middle there but get nothing they're backed up here trying to make something happen on Third and long dropping back we going to throw for the first down he's moving out of the pocket now quarterback gets down to avoid the big hit first down play call how aggressive will it be ball handed off they've got him after a seven ydd gain so second and three offense lines up this is the seventh play now in this drive that's the wide receiver coming in motion now handoff here from the shotgun powering through in the scor able to make the stop after a short game the eighth play of this opening drive it's third and short try and muscle for the first down game moves it to the 24 that's a fresh set of downs fresh set of downs for the offense first down off the play fake looking to throw quick completion to the tight end and a big game before he goes out of bounds the offense keeps churning gets a fresh set of downs Alabama has now moved into the Red Zone movement here from the tight end takes the handoff on the counter play Runner finally brought down at the 5 yd line defense getting pushed back here so down here in the Red Zone every yard tough to find here is a crucial play coming up out of the shotgun he hands it off and he's tackled down at the four yd line defense getting pushed back an important third down conversion coming here in the Red Zone looking to pick up the first down through the air and it's in complete very near the goal line so their first drive of the game they're going to go for it on fourth down aggressive start from the shotgun here's an inside give doesn't quite get in but it sets up a first and goal for this offense the defense backed up against their own End Zone dropping back it's milro makes the catch can he get in and he will score touchdown Alabama you come out in the playoff game Kirk no signs of rust for the the offense immediately yeah no Jitters at all after the layoff I wondered how they might be able to come out and communicate and the actually just the the Rhythm to the offense but they did not hesitate they set the tone early now they got themselves a lead extra point try coming now p is good so it's seven nothing kickoff team on the field getting set now and here's the return from inside the five they'll be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team the Bobcats offense comes out for their first possession today all right Kirk let's take a quick look at the impact players for today's game and how they're going to affect the outcome these are your leaders on the field and in the lock room these are your go-to guys not only when you need a play to be made but also when you need somebody to Rally your team goes backwards losing three yards there so behind the six second and long from their 14 he'll hand it off tackle finally made that's a very solid gain but not close to first down yardage yet on third down he drops to throw makes a quick grab and he's tackled just short of that first down marker good job by the defense the punt team making their way on the field he's on to boot it away now the fair catch made at the 30yd line Alabama's offense coming back onto the field in the last possession the defense just had no answer for this powerful ground game let's see what they can do this time and the defense able to hold him there to a short gain now it's second down here they go with the ground game here running back takes the hand off stopped at the 43 but that's enough to make a first down a running play gives the offense fresh set of downs On The Run it's young he's found some room with the 45 that's a big gain finally brought down near the the 37 Alabama comes up to the line quickly I know people want to talk about the spread and Alabama's offense has changed over the years but at the end of the day with this coaching staff it still comes down to the line of scrimmage and the ability to Pound The Rock think about the backs they've had in recent Years Mark Ingram and Josh Jacobs Derk Henry jir Gibbs most recently this is an offense that still wants to control things up front and beat you down didn't quite get the playoff in time it'll be delay of game delay of game penalty will cost the offense five penalty makes it first and long he'll hand it off that run produces a decent gain second down after that run on the previous play dropping back it's milro looks toward the sideline finds the running back and he's tackled for a loss after the catch the defense all over that one looking to throw it on Third and very long breaks free and a senior making a disruptive impact play that is outstanding defense to be able to Leverage this quarterback that is a tough thing to do this guy is as Fleet footed as any quarterback in the country and to be able to bring him down for a loss like that is a major accomplishment and the punt team makes its way outto the field he's on to boot it away now and it's a solid punt headed toward the Seline and the punt lands out of bounds let's see exactly where they'll spot it here here comes the Bobcats offense back out there they were held to a quick three and out last time looking to put together a positive drive here using the ground game here tailback has the handoff he moves the ball across the 20 to the 22 second down play coming up for this offense and the ball is handed off out of the shotgun and they try the middle but stuck for No Gain it's third down for the offense they'll run it handed off to the running back tackle but first down a running play gives the offense fresh set of downs a good job here by this offensive line in the running back listen these guys have really had a lot to do with why they're in this playoff game right so give it to the offensive line in the back get the first down on this third and short see what you can do from here here comes the uptempo [Music] [Applause] offense from the shotgun now here's a handoff inside tackle but not before he gets into enemy territory at the 45 first down play call coming up how aggressive will it be they'll keep it on the ground running back has the handoff he's taken down but that's a nice gain they'll spot the ball now at the 35 big guys up front lined up it's first down bringing pressure caught in the back field it's Wilson the defense drops him for a loss he went backwards there a second down behind the sticks now and the back now goes in motion quarterback looking to pass here on second down makes the catch downfield they bring him down but a big chunk of yardage on the play new set of downs for the offense first and [Applause] 10 looking to throw it from the Red Zone finds an open Target on the left side and he'll run out of bounds after picking up a few yards on the play so Alabama will take the lead into the quarter break here and the first quarter is in the book books what is a huge opportunity for both these programs to get a step closer to a national championship through one period these teams are finding out that playoff games just feel different who can handle the nerves better as we head to the second an inside give now from the shotgun they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one and they convert here on third down in the Red Zone this is a four-point type of play touchdown or field goal looking to throw it's McLoud has no one to throw to there on third down and now it's a fourth down coming up so now on fourth down out comes the field goal unit the kick is good offense collects three points on the drive I was watching this guy in pregame he has got a strong leg not surprised here he's able to put three points up here for the [Music] offense following the field goal the kickoff team is out there now return starts from inside the five to be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team so here comes the Alabama offense back onto the field they're looking to build on the lead they had to punt the football in their last possession open Play of the drive quick throw to the left they bring him down but a solid gain there on first down looks to be just inches short of the marker they'll try to pick up the yardage on the ground and he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage that running play gives the offense fresh set of downs Back In Motion now first down looking to throw the ball and he dumps it off to the tight end a huge hit by the linebacker a collision of big bodies there here's the handoff nice run he's brought down to the 44 offense looking to keep the drive going here third and short now from the 44 they'll try to move the chains here on the ground stopped at the 43 this offense picks up another first down this Alabama offense is moving quickly down the field and they'll give it to the back the gain is three now it's second down and seven offense set for the sixth play in this drive change of pace now looking to throw the football grab down the middle it's LW good enough for first down yardage a new set of downs after after that completion out of the shotgun he'll hand it off defense able to stop the ball carrier there here's the second down play to throw it's milro incomplete very lucky to avoid an interception there offense been in Reverse here now a long way to go to convert this third down running back has it on the screen now may WRA him up but the gain is good enough for a first down a new set of downs after that completion play action here on first down pressure is coming it's incomplete he was hit as he threw good pass rush there on first down split backfield here off play action he's looking to throw caught behind the line it's Miller made the catch but he was surrounded for not much room to run they did a really good job that time of leveraging him out in space I I thought he might have a chance to be able to shake loose because he is so and he's going to fling it deep going for it all here catch Made In The End Zone touchdown tied that kind of execution in a long drive that's why this team made it for the college football playoff that's exactly right being able to mix in the rung with the pass picking up first downs and eventually coming up with the touchdown that is a tough thing to do they made it look easy and now the try here for the extra point and the kick is up and good they tack on a point to their lead here's the kickoff team let's see if they give the returner an opportunity to bring this back he'll return it from inside the five the be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team the Texas state offense back on the field now they moved it last time but settled for a Chip Shot looking to find the end zone this time you know in the era that we live in right now everybody wants to spread the field around try to create space try to create one-on-one matchups and the defense has countered over the years by trying to play out wide but here's a great example of a defense they trap him and Sack him back at the 10 I like the call here but you can't run long long developing playaction passes like that if the offensive line is not going to give the quarterback time to throw well a serious challenge for this offense you don't want to be in third and long inside your own 20 how much of a risk will they take to try to pick up this first down quick throw to his receiver but they don't connect it's incomplete and it brings up fourth down and the punt team now on to kick it away looking to flip the field here oh he's got some space here and the coverage team makes the stop on this return here comes the Alabama offense onto the field the last possession was a passing game Clinic they moved it right down for a touchdown and they keep it going he's moving out of the pocket on the move but can't find a receiver and he's brought down well the the offense tries to go with a play action to slow this defense down but they weren't buying it they applied the pressure and came up with the sack so this offense faces a second and 15 the o line needs to regroup here comes a handoff they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one crucial third down play right here to the air it's milro on the run here lets it go that one is incomplete the defender was right there and it brings up fourth down now pun team ready to boot it away and the punt heads out of bounds that will spot this about the 35 here comes the Texas state offense back out there last time was a quick three and out can they get a drive going this time he's got it for a big game breaks into the clear it's a Sprint they finally get him down at the 10 yd line sets up a first and goal what a play this offense has gotten going at long last it's another first and 10 he hands it off from the gun they finally bring him down at the five offense really threatening now so here comes second down now every play important down here in the Red Zone there's the snap they'll set up to throw they trap him and Sack him back at the 10 crucial third down coming up in the Red Zone can they keep the drive going or will they have to settle for three and he'll drop back here on third down pressure coming and they've got him again man that is how you prevent an offense from punching it in when they get inside the 10 yd line that is backto back sacks for this defense near the goal line and the field goal unit coming on the field now he was on target with his first try see if he can keep it going from 34 yds away the kick is good he knocked it right down the middle oh Chris it's a nice kick here to polish off that drive with at least three points up on the [Music] board They Come Away with three points on the drive and now the kickoff team will boot it away he's going to return it from near the goal line he be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team here comes the Crimson tied offense onto the field now coming off a three and out looking to produce a positive drive [Applause] here Towers through they'll tackle him right at the 25 yd line getting set here's second down to the air it's milro defense is coming after him and the junior gets home making a sack there you know a lot of times we get caught up Chris in the one-on-one battles with the receivers and the DBS here's a great example of up front the offensive line and the defensive line who wins that battle this time the defense wins it and they get the [Music] S we brings the two-minute warning we have to see if the offense can build on this lead before the break drops back looking to throw for it on third down running out of time in the pocket gets the ball up as he's hit but it's incomplete and here comes the punter onto the field he's on to boot it away now and The Return Man decides to Signal fair catch here comes the Bobcats offense back out there if they want to cut into this lead before halftime they have to work quickly now first play of the drive they'll come out throwing and that pass is hauled in over the middle tackle made after the completion they'll have to hurry now second down with the clock ticking there's the snap quarterback setting up to throw's here's a fumble way behind the line of scrimmage offense keeps possession recovers the fumble timeout called by the defense will go to the sideline and try to adjust that's their first timeout he stopped short of the marker so it's fourth down now and now the defense will call a timeout here to make an adjustment on their side before this crucial play and at Fourth Down they'll punt it away here the returner brought down sets up the next Drive first down here for this offense they'll come out throwing here to start the drive it's caught downfield another positive gain for this offense and this quarterback continues to show how dangerous he is when he has time to throw the defensive coordinator's got to change up his looks maybe bring in the blitz anything they can do to get this quarterback out of this Rhythm it's second down after that completion back to pass it's milro looking for his big tight end that one Falls incomplete looking for a flag doesn't get it brings up third down looking to pick up the first down through the air and he's got his man open downfield no stopping and takes it all the way touchdown Bama oh what a play man this defense they better watch out for this tight end today it's proven right there how easily he can slip behind and get lost in coverage and if that happens this quarterback's going to find him and make you pay so they'll try to add to the lead now with the pat when after makes it a 15-point game so the offense gets momentum scoring before halftime now the kick up we'll see if the defense can get his top and preserve that momentum and he takes this from inside the five solid job by the coverage team they bring him down at the 16 the Texas state offense back on the field now let's see what they do here in the final minute of the half try to get aggressive and cut into this lead or play it Junior steps up and makes an impact play timeout is called to talk strategy late in this close game with halftime approaching his pass rush has been a problem another sack sets up second and long offense looking to throw the ball has incomplete very nearly intercepted that time so a tricky situation here third and very long inside your own 20 how much of risk do you take you know this defense could be very aggressive at this moment and now the defense will call a timeout before this critical down just to get everybody on the same page they bring the puns are onto the field now bar catch sh it at the 50 this line getting set up it's a first down play scanning the field it's milro looking for the wide out but they can't make the connection balls incomplete offense getting set up here's second down and he's back for throw again after that incompletion on first down pass not complete so the offense getting set this is not where you want to be against this defense third and long dropping back he going to throw for the first down oh that's just a throwaway there on third down and now a fourth down play coming up special teams on the field now here comes a punt punt lands at the six but heads into the end zone for a Touchback so the offense takes the field in the final seconds to the half chance for just a couple more plays they bring him down but he reaches the 30 yd line timeout is called to talk strategy time for just one or two plays here before halftime on First and 10 look at a throw and it's incomplete just 5 seconds left on the clock now this will likely be the last play of the half quarterback wants to throw it on second down and that pass rush has tra him it's a sack m is going to wrap up the first half here let's kick it now to Kevin Connors with our halftime update thanks Chris the magnitude and intensity of these playoff matchups s is always something special to be a part of and we'd be remiss if we didn't start this halftime report by acknowledging the sparkling play of this tight end the guy's like an aircraft carrier out there as a blocker and then when he releases and shows off that speed and Route running he's almost unguardable got to believe he won't be able to go anywhere in this second half without someone attached to his hip that's going to do it for us here at the half time time to see how this incredible playoff drama plays out and for that it's back to Chris and Kirk Fields it just outside the goal line makes it to the 16 that's good coverage there here comes the Texas state offense back out there first play of the second half is a handoff goes backwards losing three yards there so it's second down and long here from the 13 running back with the football nowhere to run up the middle the punter has been very busy so far can they finally convert here on third down well they keep trying to run the football and they keep getting dominated at the line of scrimmage that has been a theme throughout this entire game we've talked about it earlier in the game it's not changing at all they become onedimensional I think it's allowed this defense to really lock in on that quarterback bringing it back it's Adams and the returner brought down by the coverage team and out comes the offense set to take over here off the play fake looking to throw on first down lets it Go quickly and he's got it he's tackled immediately but not before a game that moves the ball to the 25 Alabama comes up with the line quickly a nice throw and a great catch by another Alabama wide receivers that's really where we are anymore with Alabama you just come to expect great re receivers like this you think back in recent years to Amari Cooper and Jerry Judy Jaylen wad Devonte Smith the list goes on and on boy they've got some great looking receivers on this squat to throw it's milro pass walls incomplete there was a lot of contact no penalty brings up third down they come to the line a long way to go for the first down but needing this crucial conversion right now doesn't hold on good hit by the DB now it brings up 14 down coach elects a try for three points and sends out the field goal unit and the field goal is good and they add to their lead snap the hold the kick everything there perfect to put three points up here for the offense [Music] so after adding to this big lead they'll set to kick it away fielded In The End Zone it's Anderson tackled at the 14 not very good field position to start here here comes the Bobcats offense back out there this group is coming off a quick three and out can they put something together in this drive stop after a small gain now looking at second and nine offense cranking up the tempo now no huddle second down they're going to throw it the pass rush closing in just gets the pass away but took a shot that time third down the offense desperately needs a conversion here trailing in the third quarter dropping back looking to throw for the first down it's intercepted tried to fire it into a tight window big takeaway now looking for a big turn touchdown Crimson tie wow what a play of defensive score well the takeaway and the touchdown that is just a dream play for any Defender Kirk well let's start with the interception I just love the fact that he got his eyes turned around found the football and then has the athletic ability to be able to secure it then he goes back to high school running back days and shows you what he can do with the ball in his hands and takes it all the way back for a touchdown beautiful thing [Applause] so they'll try to add to the lead now with the [Applause] pat extra point is good and they stretch the lead a little bit more getting set to kick the ball off now Fields it inside the 5 yd line and he stopped at the 20 tried to make something happen but that's good coverage there the Texas state offense back on the field now it'll be interesting to see if this quarterback can bounce back he threw a pick six in the last possession went it up the middle but stuff for no game what's the play call here on second down for this offense dropping back it's McLoud oh and he dropped it over the middle in some traffic there now brings up third down not going to be easy here backed up a long way to go for a first down he's running out of time here down goes the quarterback it's a sack and just like that you squeeze the life out of this offense that's another sack by this defense they have been in that back field the entire game and a big reason why these guys are enjoying a lead the punt team making their way on the field forced to kick it away for the sixth time [Applause] [Music] this one will be fair caught Alabama's offense coming back onto the field they're trying to build this lead here had to settle for three last time out off the play fake on first down with the catch it's hail they bring him down but the gain moves the ball into enemy territory at the 43 pass complete for a first down the offense gets a fresh set of downs looking for his big tight end physical defending that one Falls incomplete brings up second down trying to flex the ground game here running back takes the hand off that gain sets up a third down play send the back in motion drops back needing a third down completion here pass is caught right near the sideline What A Catch does get the foot down this Alabama offense is moving quickly down the field looking for a gap it's hes tackled behind the line it's a loss of two second down play coming up single back takes the handoff that's a nice tackle there by the senior they're backed up here trying to make something happen on Third and long dropping back look going to throw for the first down it's picked off he tried to fire the ball into a tight window wow a risky call by the offensive coordinator playing with the lead in the playoff in the second half throwing the football I don't disagree with it but now you give this defense a chance to create a turnover and they capitalize here with the pick [Music] here comes the Texas state offense back out there they're coming off a quick three and out so looking to put something together on this drive with a little more urgency offt Target with the throw incomplete second down after that previous play tight end goes in motion before the snap play action fake looking to throw oh they've got him for a sack a big play made by the junior well that takes the wind right out of your Sails this offense is trying to find a way to get back into this game and another pressure and a sack against their [Applause] quarterback well a serious challenge for this offense you don't want to be in third and long inside your own 20 how much of a risk will they take to try to pick up this first down the pocket breaking down and the protection breaks down yet again another sack if this team can hold on today and win this pass rush deserves all the credit in the world they have gotten after this quarterback so many times really every time the opposing offense does something positive it feels like a sack just stops any progress and the punt team makes its way onto the [Applause] field he's got some daylight turning up on the speed they finally get him down but that's a solid return good work by The Return Man so here comes the Alabama offense back on of the field the last possession ended in a dreaded Red Zone interception let's see if they can bounce back from that costly error one thing I love about this back is how he gets involved in the passing game nice catch [Applause] here thrown Qui they caught in the right flat and he'll get the first down yards before they finally bring him down that running play gives the offense a fresh set of downs and they'll run it out of the shotgun just a small gain look at at second and nine looking to pass it's [Applause] milro receiver makes the grab they bring him down quickly a short pitch and catch to get a little bit closer to the marker Al Alabama now operating in the Red [Applause] Zone it's an RPO the quarterback gets it out quickly they get him but what a spin move that's one for the Highlight re and that run is good for first down yardage a new set of downs for this offense from the shotgun now here's an inside give and they'll stop him after a short gain coming to the line on second down this is important they want to avoid a third and long quarterback sets up looking for an open Man On The Run here lets him go the pass is caught and they stop him just short but defense really backed up now it's first and [Music] goal they'll try to run this one in couldn't quite get in but they're knocking on the door at the one second down and goal it's a quarterback draw here they're able to get him down positive yards that's all you want to see as an offense as long as you're moving the ball forward it's going to give you a chance to continue to get first downs what are they looking at now third and touchdown Alabama stretching the lead this one is getting ugly so the offense flexing Kirk and stretching the lead here now in the second half well you can catch your breath here a little bit if you're this offense that touchdown can help you out but now your own defense can help you preserve the lead so you can go back out and continue to build upon that to the Finish kicking team on now for the extra point and the kick is up and good they tack on a point to their lead there's the kickoff team Now set to boot this one away he thought about returning it but instead takes a knee it'll be a Touchback and they'll start at the 25 from the shotgun it's a handoff that's a solid gain moves the ball to the 29 important second down play coming up hand off here from the shotgun there's the tackle but first down yardage a running play gives the offense fresh set of downs back to throw it's McLoud a short completion of the tight end and the defense swarms not much of a gain on that completion pass complete it's second down now out of the shotgun he hands it off that R moves the ball across the 40 offense facing a third and short from the 41 can they make the first down and avoid a tricky fourth down decision from the gun he looks for an open man incomplete he with his hit as he threw the ball that's a big third down defensive play and the punt team now on to kick it away the coverage team able to bring the returner to the ground here comes the Alabama offense onto the field on the ground it's hnes they'll tackle him about the 23 yd line offense getting set it's second down quarterback drops back from the shotgun looking for a receiver and he pulls in the catch they bring him down but he makes the 40 yd line that's a solid gain offense comes up to the line they might have a chance for a couple more plays before the quarter expires and the ball is handed off out of the shotgun throws a stiff arm so Alabama will take the lead into the quarter break here this has been thorough domination three three quarters a real statement confirming their status as a national championship Contender let's check out the stats so far so let's get back to the action one quarter away what would be an impressive cfp statement and from the shotgun an inside handoff take it down but not before he makes the first down this Alabama offense is moving quickly down the [Music] field and at first down they go right back to him great job by the offensive line here opening up some holes and giving the running back room to run on first down plays like this can open up the playbook for the play caller allow him to make that defense think are they going to run maybe play action maybe throw the ball down field and he's brought down but he does have enough for the first down [Applause] out of the shotgun he'll hand it off and he's able to find some Running Room nice pickup second down after that run on the previous play bakes the hand off looking to throw grab behind the line it's haes and he heads out of bounds with be backwards on that play didn't want to take the hit third down out of the shotgun bringing pressure receiver makes the catch game moves it to the 24 that's a fresh set of downs Alabama getting set with a first and 10 coming [Music] up catch made on the out route that's a big game before he goes out of bounds it'll move the sticks more than enough for a first down the offense locking on the door here with a first and goal looking downfield it's milro and the pass is incomplete just across the goal line that's a second and goal play for the offense looking to score they'll run it to the left side it's a short game but look at that defense swarmed to the football offense moving backwards here a long way from the goal line now going to throw for it on Third and goal he's got it near the end zone so they'll settle for a field goal attempt here he was on target with his first attempt this one just a Chip Shot from 20 yds away that kick right down the middle can't hit it any better than that and that will extend their lead even further well they almost put a touchdown on the board but instead they come away with three [Music] points so after adding to this big lead they are set to kick it away and here's the return from inside the five they'll be tackled at the 17 strong job by the coverage team here comes the Bobcats offense back out there the last time they were forced to punt it away can they get points out of this possession quick throw testing the middle he's got an open man downfield and it's caught it'll be enough for a first down brought down at the 43 finally good for them they come up with a big play like this let's face it offense has been at a premium for these guys you wonder where plays like this have been all game long pressure is coming he's going to be brought down by that ferocious pass rush nice sack nothing is more gratifying for a defense to be able to sit back in Play Zone and still get pressure on the quarterback with your defensive front second and long for this offense after the sack there's the snap he's looking to throw again he's just trapped and sacked in the pocket well this is what happens when you get behind the chains Chris is people like to say this is an obvious passing situation it's really hard to vary things up and confuse the defense this time the defensive line just came right in expecting the pass and blew up the play so two losses in a row puts him in a tough spot third and very long and the quarterback dropping back let's it fly out of the wide out and the pass is dropped would have been a big game but he
