welcome to Amhurst Massachusetts and mcer Alumni Stadium home to the Minutemen of UMass just a stone throw W from Where the Heart of the American Revolution was fought and we are anxious to see a fight on the grid iron in this one we've got a terrific matchup for you today rich in pageantry and tradition and it ought to be a fantastic clash as we'll see a squad from the ma the Toledo Rockets taking on the UMass Minutemen for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis David Pollock and Jesse Palmer with me guys it's time to get it going and the rockets will get us underway with the opening [Applause] kickoff here he comes from inside his own five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 the Minuteman offense takes the field and they'll go to work first when this guy comes onto the field David he seems to bring the it factor with him so much fun as a play caller to have a guy you depend on you trust you know Palmer you're going to get the best out of this young man he's also one of those guys David who just elevates everybody else around him right all 10 guys in that huddle offensively just seem to play better knowing they've got confidence in this guy throwing the comeback looks like such a simple throw but the timing is so important and as a quarterback man this is all about trusting your guy you know exactly where he's going to sit it down you anticipate it you throw it you know he's going to come back and make that play for you he'll do it himself and he has a solid gain before the defense bottles him up this defense really has their hands full guys they got to play with great eye discipline because they don't know who's going to be keeping the football in the Run game and that time you saw the QB he was able to kind of skirt his way to get some positive yards running game worked on first down let's see if they go back to it on second down looking for a physical attack from the gun that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there I'll tell you this is a running back who's very very dangerous and the defense did a good job getting him down there but they got to do a great job gang tackling because this is a guy that can break tackles and turn those those types of plays into home runs on Third and short they'll try to pick it up on the ground here and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land really nice job by the defense there expecting run on that play making the tackle and now giving yourself a chance to get off the field UMass will line up to punt it away getting our first look of the afternoon at the punter a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work so Toledo's offense taking the field first chance we have to see them today here are our impact players for this game and it goes beyond executing an assignment to make an impact in the game yeah obviously we were talking to both coaching staffs this week and we asked them who needs to step up and play well they immediately pointed to these guys right here they are the key for their respective teams yeah and they don't always show up in the Box Score but these are the guys of the leaders these are the guys getting everybody organized and have to play well for their team to succeed six- yd pickup on first down leaves him with second and four looking to throw it's gleon and here's a fumble way behind the line and the defense has got it and they're bringing it back touchdown Minutemen don't just get the ball score with the ball and the defense did and the defense comes with the blitz nice job getting to the quarterback and don't just get there try to strip that football out they get the QB to the ground the ball's out they scoop it up take it all the way back to the house for six ready to try the point after and the extra point is good and it's seven nothing that is a defensive player's dream ball sitting there chance to scoop it up run with it and they don't stop you until the band starts playing they're just about to kick it off after that scoop and score [Applause] six and and he takes this from inside the five he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 the Rockets offense is back on the field takes a hand off it's Stewart nice move to stay on his feet and they drag him down but not before he picks up the first down all right well look I know the defense was feeling real good about their rund de coming into this one and how they've been playing up to this point but finally David the offense breaks through and they finally generate something positive on the ground and I can't tell you how easy it is when you're going to throw the ball consistently and I know it I'm going to pin my ears back and I'm going to get to the quarterback it makes life really easy on a defensive line but when you can have balance now the defense doesn't know what's coming they need more of this if they're going to be successful on offense nice job there good timing between the QB and the wide receiver executing that out route the offense setting up shop at the 46 first and [Applause] 10 looking to move it through the air fires to the wide out got his man downfield and this defense was flailing as he weaved his way and got down to the 26 and I really like when offenses attack over the middle of the field between the linebackers and the safeties there's usually a soft area that you can usually have some success and really nice job by this offense taking advant into those [Applause] areas he'll keep it himself he has the first and still on his feet and a really nice run and pick up there before the defense avoided disaster and stopped the really big play there's an example of the offense taking advantage of all the attention the defense is giving this outstanding running back remember he's one of the best in the game they're expecting him to get the football so the quarterback says you know what I'll just keep it no one's keying on me I'm going to get up field and find an explosive play they're looking to pass from the Red Zone almost intercepted they took a shot on first down and just about turned the thing over and that is a huge missed opportunity for the quarterback you've got your guy wide open in the end zone you're not under pressure you just got to hit him that ball got away and that's one he'd like to have back operating in the Red Zone here on second down they'll throw again after the incompletion he's got it and still on his feet that completion gets them inside the 10 and the defense is running out of room to defend a nice job by the QB there timing out that drag throw it's Zone coverage so he's got to make sure he gets it to his receiver in a window to allow him to catch the ball and then turn it up field as they get set to snap just about to reach the end of the quarter unleashes to the end zone and it's caught touchdown rockets and it's so underrated the the relationship between a QB and a wide receiver the timing the ability to know where he's going to be and be accurate with the football that's what leads to nice touchdowns Jesse well the chemistry between these two guys has to be great when you're throwing into the end zone because coverage is going to be tight the throw might not be perfect but this is something these two guys have been repping in practice over and over and over and it's paying dividends now on game day now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic splits the uprights they March 78 yards down the field and they cap things off with a niney touchdown pass and we're all square as he's set to kick it [Applause] away he'll bring it out it's brown I imagine he's going to get an earful on the sideline after bringing it out of the endzone and being knocked down at the 11 off the play fake on first down and the quarterback goes down all the way back at his four yd line absolutely nothing settled deadlocked after one period of play as we have a look at the stats after that tight first quarter this second period ought to be a lot of fun now the offense has to overcome the negative play after the defense comes up with a sack he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and just nowhere to go for that Runner he had no choice that defense they were bringing it up front everybody winning their one-on ones and they completely had him surrounded not exactly the ideal situation for this offense third and long long backed up inside their 20 right back to the well and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop UMass will line up to punt it away he just wanted to get it out of there from his end zone now a fair catch is called for and may just shy of Midfield too has the ball here comes the offense how big is this drive scored a touchdown the last time they had it defense gets a stop and now it's up to them in a tie game all right so if you're the offensive coordinator here let's dial it in who are your best matchups and best Playmakers to take advantage of this golden opportunity yeah and I'm interested to see this defense too like the momentum is clearly not in your face how do you get it back how do you make a big play do you be more aggressive here to try to get the football back to your offense they'll leave it with him really nice stop there from this senior leader and the running back didn't get much there nice job by the defense you can tell they're focused in on this running back on this run game being physical getting knockbacks and limiting his carries offense breaks the Huddle on third down they'll try to run for it he gets the job done on third down they move the chains it's at the 37 well the defense knew coming into this one it was going to be a physical game guys are going to have to be great at the point of attack and get off blocks and make tackles they couldn't stop the offense from picking up that first down on that run play the Rockets have it with a first and 10 used the play fake now to throw quickly to the tight end and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one and that's why they got to keep running the football man because play action is going to be a big part of this game plan you've got to get this tight end over the middle of the field vertically and give him an opportunity because you just saw how dangerous he is after the catch after the first down completion it's second and short single back formation and they give it to him slammed to the ground but not before he gets the first down you know you start day one of training camp running your base runs you need a few yards you run these plays you need a first down you run these plays you rep them over and over and over again they're not sexy they're not pretty but in the end they're effective and they get you that new set of downs when you need them moving the running back trying to get the D to tip its hand throws toward the end zone almost intercepted they took a shot on first down down and just about turned the thing over well the offense trying to take a shot and get aggressive downfield that's when the defense just has to come up with an opportunity to make the interception in the end zone not going to get a lot of chances like that second down here and maybe they've got time to get one more snap off before the two-minute warning misfired on the last play they'll go back to the air under pressure and down he goes at the 33 seventh play of the drive coming up but a long way to go on third down wants to throw it's gleon throwing right wide open downfield defense is there to make the stop but he's got the first down and they'll have it first and goal at the six and listen the defense knew coming into this one they were going to Target him early and often he is a weapon and there's no mystery where the quarterback's going to be looking on critical down and distances let's see how they are able to cover him throughout the rest of this game and the rockets are threatening on first and goal here's the snap looking to throw holds it in in the end zone touchdown Toledo and I just love the execution by this offense late in the half man you want to take the lead you want to get that momentum on your side and they do it they finish it with the passing game and I tell you what heat that that passing game up you can keep this lead keep the momentum and keep putting up numbers P unit on the field and the P gives him a 14-7 lead that touchdown Drive covered 61 yds and they get it into the end zone with a 6-yard touchdown pass the kickoff team out there set to boot it away on the move from inside is five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 the UMass offense returns to the field last time David was one two three kick yeah last drive that three and out sometimes that puts your defense in a bad spot and you got to get a drive together here so you don't wear the defense out I just think David too predictable that last Drive they got to do something here to get this defense on their heels and they'll line up from the 31 on first down looking downfield it's kumachan snags it over over the middle turns it on at Midfield and they don't drag him down until he gets all the way to the 46 yd line there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer comes out throwing on first down can't hang on and he'll tell you he really should have made that catch and he had an opportunity right in the middle it'll be second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again he's looking for an open man on second down he's got his man and he'll run across the sidelines after the good gain this is a very tough slot receiver to cover if you're a linebacker because of how quick and how Shifty he is you never seem to know which way he's going and he always seems to create an open space for his QB third down coming up after the completion they'll try to get it through the air gets it out quickly he steps out of bounds but he's got enough for a first down really nice job there by the quarterback understanding that it's Zone coverage on third down you've going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done UMass getting set to snap it on First and 10 used the play fake now to throw gets it out fast at the 20 he's got space he will step out of bounds but not before the big pickup and a first down for this offense after giving up a few extra yards after a hitch throw I wonder if this defense is going to want to give this guy this much access moving forward they might be thinking about more press coverage or playing some Zone coverage where the corner is right up on them from the Red Zone looking for a receiver and he's got it touchdown yass yeah and the passing game comes through man and we need more of that in the second half an extra point away from tying this football game you trailed a little bit in the first half stayed calm if this passing game can continue to heat up look out in the second half on to attempt the try and it's up and good so it's an 80 yd drive and the score comes on a 17 yd throw for the touchdown all tied up and just about set to kick it away [Applause] away he'll bring it back from inside is five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 guys let's see what Toledo can get done on offense this time the way this game started you feel as if you have to score a touchdown every time you have it and now we'll see if they can respond yeah and I wonder how much pressure that puts on the offense Jesse like you know this is back and forth and I got to score and every possession matters so much what does that do to you as a quarterback well it puts a lot more pressure on you for sure to feel like I got to make every third down throw if guys are open vertically down the field I got to hit them too we can't let our serve get broken back to throw it's gleon quick completion on the out route finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connor in our halftime update gentlemen what else is new a spirited environment there in Amherst an entertaining first half and we've got a multi-p possession lead to break down thanks to the surgical Precision of this offense might honestly take more time to talk about what didn't work than what did the running game the passing game Gadget plays have worked now it's just a matter of finishing the job and with that let's head back to our team in inside Alumni Stadium we've got a good one going here in the third quarter all tied up as he's set to kick it away on the run from inside his own five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 the Rockets offense is back on the field first drive of the second half always fun to watch you see what type of tweaks were made at the half especially when you're locked up in a ball game like this one yeah and it's been a good game I mean it's been a little bit of back and forth and a feeling out process and now once you get in the second half who's going to get aggressive Palmer who's going to take some shots try to make some plays and really go for it yeah it's interesting I think as play callers right now you learn a lot about these coaching staffs with respect to who does make the best adjustments there's a lot of coaches that believe we're just going to he lobs one high down the left side makes the grab inside the 30 touchdown Rockets and that one will give him the lead quarterbacks love receivers that can get separation but that amount of Separation uh is a little excessive I agree Ree and I think the defense needs to have a little powwow on the sidelines and talk about what just happened because that was an absolute busted coverage on the back end defense can't keep playing like that [Applause] lining up to tack one more onto that lead and the extra point is true and they're on top by seven aggressive play calling on that drive just two plays they get the long touchdown pass to pay it off the kickoff unit about to go to [Applause] work fielded In The End Zone it's brown didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the minute man going back to work on offense how about that last drive just carved him up in the air David yeah and how about that quarterback you gave him the ball and he delivered the goods great job taking apart the defense Jesse on that last drive he really did David I mean that was a master class in just reading coverage and being accurate after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven looking for room it's John brought down at the 31 after a pickup of 10 yards on that one and listen the offensive line has to do their job but a really good job by the running back understanding where his hole is is go hit it get the first down don't mess around nice job following his hole getting positive yards you Mass quickly back to the line he'll come out throwing on first down using the quick game sometimes it's easy for the receiver to get lost running a drag through all that traffic Jesse Yeah and this is a receiver to Reese who's dangerous once he has the football in his hand so I like the idea on offense of trying to get this guy the ball quickly to see what he can do once he has it got some of the work done on first now let's see what they have on second down pulls it and fires to the left he is stopped behind the line of scrimmage they'll lose yards on that one yeah nice job by the defense staying glued to him getting him on the ground as soon as he catches the football knowing he's a threat I'm not going to let this guy get out of my sights nice job by the D third down conversions are a huge that and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off dropping back it's puman he uncorks one deep and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge gain if he could have squeezed it this is a point where you just got to be able to focus and the critical down and distances in this game like that third down right there when it's a good throw you got to make the catch you've got to be able to make that play UMass will line up to punt it away let's see if he can help the coverage team out with this one catches it at the 30 it's guy is a daring punt return man he's not going to settle for the fair catch a solid return gets a little bit of ground for the offense from the shotgun now here's an inside give and how about that play by that giant that mountain of a man on the defensive front awesome job up front by this defensive line being so good at the point of attack and eating blocks eating some double teams that allows these linebackers to run free unencumbered and get to the football on second down wants to throw grabbed over the middle it's Torres and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down well you hear all the time that the tight ends the QB's best friend you saw a perfect example of it on that last play right second down you need to pick up some positive yards to keep this third down manageable really nice job of executing there here on third down for this offense trying to pick it up on the ground that'll be enough for the first down as they stop him at the 43 yd line just a great job by the quarterback the running back the offensive line sneaky little Devils what do they do make it look like pass sneak in the Run catch you off guard great play call by the offense the Rockets getting set on First and 10 they're going to ride this running back I think one of the hardest things to do is stick to the run when it's not working but it's Those runs right there that are the reason why you have to do it right you can't get to one dimensional keep slipping Those runs in there keep getting a little bit of positive yards next thing you know you look up and you might break one of those after you got them a little bit tired after the productive first down play it's second and six caught in the back field it's Newton and he delivers the blow and he's still running and the first guy couldn't get him but the second one does but not until he picks up the first down what a weapon these wide receiver screens can be not only do you get a convoy blocking you get Dynamic running when you do this and you show me the threat of throwing this wide receiver screen it makes me play defense differently it makes me have more guys out wide which opens the Box inside so I think it's really smart for coordinators and offenses to continually throw these screens to Playmakers they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one no question they wanted to get the ball to their Playmakers and both receivers have come up big through [Music] three when you're dealing with a deficit like this it's all about about somebody stepping up to make a play and you might as well start here in the fourth quarter he'll try it again nice move there and not much doing there as that defense runs him out of bounds and there's a coachable moment for that young man right there it's a nice run your team's got the lead late but because of that you cannot go out of bounds before you get to 2 minutes if you go out the clock's going to stop and that's a coachable moment something he'll learn from moving forward dropping back it's gleon he caught it so close to that end zone he could almost taste it but it'll be first and goal for this offense boy the defense really needed to get off the field there and they just couldn't do it and it's a fresh set of downs man that hurts when you're trailing late in the ball game you need those stops and you get them to third down you get them to those critical points now they get the first down you don't have many left you better get aggressive a first down run in the red zone and maybe he'll get back to the line of scrimmage but no more than that and stopping the run is about physicality it's about I'm bigger than you I'm stronger than you up front really nice job by the defense showing their strength Bo up stuffing the Run can the D deny them on second and goal tries again to get it in going right back to the well and this time he finds water gets it into the end zone for the touchdown Precision blocking up front created the open Lane in the running back followed it beautifully yeah it's pretty easy to follow an offensive line that makes those holes and just gives you a caravan all the way to the end zone what an unbelievable job blocking up front [Applause] getting set for the point after and the extra point is true and they have a TW touchdown lead up 14 in the fourth the kickoff team out there and ready to go he'll start the return in side is five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the UMass offense returns to the field he's looking to throw it get it out on the screen not able to break the big one on that screen to the running back but he found enough and a solid pickup on first down I think if you're the head coach at this point you're telling your offense doesn't matter what's happened up to this point of the game obviously things haven't gone our way but we have a chance to execute an two-minute situation and give ourselves a chance to win let's go do it one play at a time looking downfield it's puman moves away as he feels pressure and they get to the quarterback and knock him down back at the 16 and the defense loves being in this type of situation right you've got a big lead it's in the fourth quarter you know the opponent's going to be throwing the football so you get your best pass rushers coming off the edge using that speed dipping and ripping getting to the quarterback for another big play on Third and long he's going to have to throw for it finds his big tight end and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down coming into this one I thought this guy was going to be a monster he was going to put up huge numbers we know this is a big part of the offense week in week out the defense has done a great job clamping down on him that is only his second catch so far in this game he'll try to throw and pick up the first down finds him out of the back field and not much of a fourth down gamble when it's that much of a sure thing an easy conversion for this offense that's a great example of the receiver knowing exactly where the first down marker is he got the depth he needed to get so once he was able to make the catch he already knew he had it now a fresh set set of downs UMass getting set to snap it on First and 10 he wants to throw pocket starts to collapse caught over the middle it's [Applause] John little bit more to go after that last completion they'll try to pick it up on second down they're going to throw it again he'll pull it down this senior quarterback never afraid to run it when he has to pick up a first down the offense gets a quick timeout at this point every second is precious looking to throw it's puman swings it out to his running back and that defense pushing him out of bounds after a short gain you know sometimes when you're throwing against Zone coverage you need time for the routes to develop so nice job by the quarterback there being patient allowing his receivers to work themselves open offense walks to the line for play number seven of the drive looking to throw on second down excellent coverage and good use of the hands to knock it away listen a lot of time tips and deflections are because you got great eyes and vision on the quarterback you see him release the football you break on it you tip that thing and make sure the receiver can't get it couldn't find his man last time and that leaves him with a third and six from the gun wants to pass and it's incomplete on third down well on Third and short in field goal range they dial up the pass play quarterback was trying to get through progressions there was just simply nobody open couldn't make an accurate enough throw ball Falls incomplete Now setting up a big decision here on fourth down down by multiple possessions they can't come up empty on this drive in the fourth quarter they'll go for it on fourth down the completion well past the sticks turns out to be an easy conversion for this offense as they move the chains on fourth down sometimes we don't give enough credit to a receiver knowing exactly where he needs to be on the field and they pick up the first down there yeah and you got to give the receiver credit obviously knowing where that is but the defender needs to know where it is too where is he trying to get that Ball's going to come out quick he didn't really understand where the sticks were and because of that he gives up the first down need to just be a little bit more a shot toward the end zone this is caught for the late touchdown so let's not put this one to bed just yet yeah and and that's step step one great job by this offense getting in the end zone now you got to go get the stop you got to get the football back you got to find a way to do something to create a turnover get an onside to get the football back to get back in this football game lining up for the Pat and the P will draw them one point closer trailing by a touchdown here in the fourth they'll try to get it back with the onside kick that's why they call them the hands team they're able to secure the onside kick too has the ball here comes the offense one possession game getting late first order of business just take care of the football so they call this situation 4minute offense where you're trying to run the football and throw high percentage passes to maintain possession and bleed the clock this is a very difficult point of the game to execute at a high level David yeah and listen what you understand as an offense is if I get one or two first downs this ball game's over and that's your sole objective not scoring take care of the football get a few first downs walk out with the w timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here they'll run it trying to drain time off the clock picked his way through the traffic for six but it'll be fourth down and three yards to [Applause] go so here we are on fourth down and this field goal kicker is going to face all the pressure in the world splits the uprights it's good and that lead grows even bigger well that kid just showed off his hammer for a leg 50 plus and he did it with ease first order of business here don't give up a big return then the defense just has to keep them out of the end zone here he comes from inside his own five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 the offense lining up for a first down play he's going to pass and it's incomplete it was wild high and wide on that one they'll line up for a second down play looking to pass it's puman good job to avoid the negative play and just get rid of that thing one more play to pad the stats trying to move the sticks on third down through the air he's taking a deep shot it's caught and they fight him to The Bitter End all the way down to putting some more numbers in the stat column but they'll come up a little short as time expires for
