Xavier Restrepo, Cam McCormick, Daryl Porter & Damari Brown on Fall Practice No. 4

Xavier Restrepo ask you guys are few practices in just how you feeling the offense is yelling and how you feel things G Plus far oh um exactly how I expected you know um we're a super explosive offense everyone is doing really well um when guys are you know down or whatever we have got we have death um like even our Walk-Ons um Nick Thomas uh Luna Marty I mean all those guys those guys are you know busting their tails every single day any opportunity they get they're taking advantage of X after the first practice on Wednesday cam Ward told us that the defense was up 1 and0 that they took the first day how do you feel the second and third practice gone in terms of the offense responding for sure I mean we're going back and forth you know um I mean it's like couple plays here and there that just you know ruin our entire offensive Moto for the day but then we jump right back on it you know we have short-term memory um I mean if we were whooping the defense every single day there' be something wrong you know so uh again there we have great guys all over the field um great guys on the sideline as well um including the coaches and stuff like that so I mean we have a big year loading and you know obviously you go up against secondary a lot of new bases there either guys who didn't play much the last couple years were transferred in or a freshman what have been your early impressions of them oh I mean everyone's just running around the field this is one of the best you know incoming groups I've ever seen um and yeah I mean I'm nothing more to say you know um guys are are flying around making plays on both sides of the ball um giving us really good competition really good looks and uh we'll be we'll be ready you been going against you going against deari a lot cuz I think uh coach said be in the nickel a lot so have you been Asing off against him yeah I mean they rotate guys every day you know I've going against everyone um dear is a great player and so is you know everyone that lines up in the nickel giving me great work every single day Sam Brown um talk about the dimension he adds and talk about how Sam you and Jobe maybe are different types of receivers than how you know that can help you that for sure I mean Sam just like jacobe just like Isaiah just like n chance all those guys JoJo they're all different types of receivers and they bring something to the game um they're every every single one of them is unique you know uh I mean every single one of them you know comes every single day to work is what I call work and you know just gives their all and that's what I love the most about them I respect those guys a lot and um can't can't wait to play next year those guys all season see him for those that hav seen him play like what are the strengths of his game would you say I mean he he's a full receiver you know he could uh make 50-50 catches he could burn the defense off he has great hands great routes um great great athlete for you last season uh just any extra sense of motivation for you to want to see this get over the hump after seeing things started Trend over the last couple years yeah I mean um not so much looking forward to you know the season so much we still have you know it's only a third day of camp you know so we're just ready for kan's fest tomorrow um it's going to be a great opportunity fans come out get to see us work and stuff like that um and but most importantly we get another day of work you know um we get again we get another day of work we don't have to come here um and I feel like that's everyone's mindset I feel like that's why we're such a good team right now and just for you uh just what advice you've been giving to incoming freshman just what's the biggest pie F you give to them and what's the biggest thing that pie F that you got when you to put on campus for sure um so our Leadership Council actually meets um with Dr Elco he is a great great great leadership guy he come he came from a whole bunch of you know prestigious colleges and he basically put this thing in and said match me you know so that's really what I'm bringing to the table every single day match me um I came out here a little excited today you know we had pads on um and said I'm going to be the thermostat you know everybody match me um and I mean our receivers kick butt today our offense kicked butt today defense kicked butt today I mean everyone is just super high intensity super high effort and I mean even in special teams period is you know that that's where you can tell a team being you know and um I mean I make sure I'm the first one in line you know leading by example basically and uh yeah just setting the tone and again being that thermostat about how many players are on the Leadership Council right now there's about like eight 8 to 10 um but again a lot of guys we want the whole team to be a leadership councel you know um because even um Nick Thomas one of the Walk-Ons is slots um today I have my helmet off during walk through he said hey your helmet on of course let's do it you know um and I have total respect for that guy because um coming in you know knowing that you know I'm the the guy at the slot um right now him to be able to tell me that is you know take some courage you know and I have unlimited respect for we know how special we are Cam McCormick just throughout this offseason we've connected really well um and we're putting all together now and and you know taking each day at a time and excited for what's what's to come for for the team a little different tight end's room now uh a new Elijah lton arrival Elijah Royo is healthy um how productive you know you guys all have so many different skills how productive can this group be now for the last year yeah the group can be really really productive um we all you know have different skill sets and to Brak something different to the table so um I'm excited to see what this room can do this year um just because like we're a very like unselfish room um and and we we like to celebrate the success of of others in the room and you know whenever someone in the room makes a big play that St ourselves you know we're all super excited cheering um getting loud for each other just because we know like the hard work that we put in in the offseason um is going to lead us to you know when we get out there on Saturday that those big plays are going to find us and we'll be right there to celebrate with all the guys You' been around for a year or two is Lofton a guy who sort of plays Beyond his years in coming back yeah he's definitely ahead of the game for sure um you can just tell guys come in um and his his work ethic how hard he works and just like how competitive he is to be out on the field I it's impressive for a guy so young to to I guess learn the game this easy so quick cuz High School to college is a big level a big jump so for him to come in and I guess get accumulated so fast I give him his prop he's doing a great job being able to work with Camp W now going back to the spring uh what what makes him special and and what's different about just his ability to bring the guy together um he when he talks everyone listens he you know he's a leader and when when he does say something all the guys listen and and do what he says um I think outside of football he does a great job of just bringing everybody together getting guys together hanging out um just building that Camari with each other off the field cuz then that's important so when we get on the field it's it's all trust when we get out there he says something it's like Hey listen to him and let's do it let's get done for you is someone who's been around the block a few times just with a lot of younger guys whether it's Lon or JoJo or Nik or whoever maybe just what's some advice you're giving to the Freshman who are coming in as they get ready for their first collegey yeah um just work hard compete um days are going to get hard but there's going to be adversity that's going to come your way about how you can handle that adversity and move forward you know every day is not going to be a great day um and how are you going to be able to move on from that process that and you know next we have another practice tomorrow so it's like how are you going to be able to adjust your mindset to you know hey we can have PR tomor we got to go do it all over again can you keep the same level of consistency throughout the week someone's gone against the defense what do you think is said that about them so far those guys like to fly around like to have fun they fly around um they're smart and they're physical so you know it's a challenge every day going against the defense and I'm glad that I'm going against them every day it's going to only make myself better but the whole offense better every day you mentioned that you know the tight end room very a lot of guys with different skills very versatile room have you talked to uh coach Dawson coach little about what your your rol is going to be this year how much going to be blocking versus going out uh passes and stuff no I haven't really talked to them about that I I trust those guys um they trust me and and whatever whatever role they need me to play is the role I'm going to play um I I I leave that up to that those guys and I come out here every day I work hard work my butt off and wh wherever that is that's what it is you been on some pretty good teams um incling at Oregon obviously uh do you have a sense yet for overall how this team maybe Stacks out just some of the better Oregon teams you're a part of yeah this team Stacks up you know really well to some of those teams that I've been on um you know we're uh I think that we've done a really good job of I guess tuning the little things we focus a lot on that this this offseason and and I think it's paid off for us so I can't wait to see you know all the you know to re those those rewards darl now that you know you've worked with Coach Daryl Porter Jackson now for second Camp what what have you noticed about him what's made the biggest impression on you about him um I would say the way he coaches uh brings the confidence out you uh make sure that you're playing Fun uh doing whatever you got to do to make plays uh I feel like he's going to be a really good coach for the guys uh that's younger than me and and last year you guys had a real veteran secondary with you know Cam and James and Jaden and TC and all those guys now it's a mix of guys you know a lot of them haven't played much and were younger how does it feel and what do you have to do as like kind of a veteran leader in the in the secondary I feel like I have to uh turn into a coach sometimes and telling them what uh everything that I know um from experience on and off the field I feel like uh I have to do more um outside of football what's your biggest piece of advice to some of those young Ro work on um just play with confidence be relaxed uh don't worry about you making mistakes um you're still young you have a long way to go um and I feel like they're going to be F deari Brown specifically how's he been doing um he's really going to be really good uh it's not a first rounder um I feel like he has all the tools attributes to be uh all World corner um allamerican so I feel like uh he's going to be fun you've known him since he's a little on the way back in high school ages how much growth have SE from in from guys face back know I remember when he was about 511 about 160 lb bro he he was he was a young one but uh he's doing well now I feel like I'm taking him under my wing and I feel like he's going to have a breakout season next year how are you a different player than you were last year how are you a different than you were last year um I feel like I'm learning more little things um that I didn't really see last year um last year I feel like I was just out there playing uh focus on uh who who we had each week but I feel like more I'm learning the game even more but for you specifically you know obviously had a great season last year may we didn't get some recognition what you deserve is that sort of that sort of chip on your shoulder now for the season man I with a chip on my shoulder every morning man um I feel like I should be an all American I feel like I should be on these draft wars high but you know things happen but I feel like things have changed after this year on the flip side of the field how do you see uh the offense improving and who are some of the receivers that you like taking reps against in practice um I like taking reps against Isaiah hor he came a long way from last year he look like he looks like a new dude um Sam Brown um I know I've been going against him since West Virginia that was my first roommate so I already knew how he's going to come in um and then going to play at nichel with Xavier stle it's it's new to me but I feel like he's getting me better you got a role in Sam coming here I mean did you guys stay in touch since that first year yeah we've been we've been talking the whole since back uh for the past 2 three years but I didn't even know he was going to come down here it was crazy what was your reaction when you found like was coming I was excited man uh he actually we actually live in the same uh apartment complex now so get to see him see whenever I want to we just hang out chill touched on with a lot of new lot between the younger guys and transfers coming in and in the secondary just how you feel the chemistry is starting to come along with you guys about three and a half weeks away from things starting up um chemistry is everything's uh going well I feel like we're getting tighter um from Robert Stafford to OJ those guys are playing really really well um getting them some reps with the ones uh to get them prepared even more and I feel like they're going to be really good too we'll do a couple more for darl then darl I mean you mentioned you know he originally red with Sam at West Virginia he goes to Houston he's here by way of Houston you know Devonte Brown you know went to UCF came here he goes to FSU it's like reuniting and you know seeing guys again guys new from high school with the state of college football these days what's that like as someone who's been through the transfer process and seeing guys you've known come and go and all this stuff just what what's that like how do you guys handle that it's pretty cool it's like pre- agency honestly like you never know who's going to be on your team a years from now and I feel like once uh this is all said and done I go to the NFL uh it could happen again we when I get there how how much do you balance like I mean obviously like it's cool like if your friends come and rejoin the team I mean how difficult is it make it to just you know to stay meshed and stuff with with your teammates um I don't think it's difficult at all um I feel like now that they come down here we can go out hang out like we used to um before like what you you know you mentioned that uh you feel like you should get more attention whatever it might be interceptions for you is that a fot Point obviously the big stat is that been something you've been focusing on of course you know I really want interceptions like everyone does but I feel like last year I didn't get as many chances um hopefully I get some more chances this year to make plays on the ballar deari just as you get ready for Damari Brown year two just what did you learn the most last season that you're hoping to improve hondy uh just always stay ready um see the moment opportunity was there for me last year uh he's here for me now so I'm just going to take advantage and uh moving forward get better day by day look like you you've added some size even since spring um were you did you add some weight about what are you now uh few few body drop uh about 197 in that 200 range go up now how you felt about the first few practices so far here they been smooth uh defense is coming together offense is Prett nights uh we're all competing and stuff feel like we have a good season this got reps against X and at nickel you know how how's everything going in terms of playing that position and you can stop X you can pretty much stop anybody I guess so is it back and forth how do you feel you're doing in that in that battle uh he's good work um best of the best I go against him uh I make sure uh my p's and q's are are on Everything is Everything is one-onone game game time game time reps with him so uh the more the more I go against him the more he shocking me out what is uh Daryl Porter sort of meant secondary as maybe a leader in somebody who's had a lot of better experience uh darl that's that's my guy um he has a lot of knowledge to him he's been doing this for few years so hopefully this being his last year he can go lead Le go out with a bang and leave the secondary you guys go back to your high school days just how much has your guys relationship grown since your time of Heritage to now being back up together yeah with this second year being on the FI it's grown uh even though he's older than me I act like the little brother I try try not to act like the big brother but he's cool be around off the what have you seen from um like the Freshman who com in you know guys like Ryan OJ um what have you seen from them you know through the first uh few days of practice those guys are talented uh OJ kindor reminds me of myself from last year came in uh competed early at the gate doesn't shy away from anything uh the same with Ryan just got to stay healthy but uh when those guys are good they're out there they compete and what advice you you have for them like you went through the same thing being freshman new to camp and everything about a year ago uh just learn from your mistakes try not to make the same on over and over just get better every day and don't shy with competition and I guess what's your what's your mentality going the year cuz last year I mean it was a very veteran secondary this year you know you're a lot more being asked from me just what what are your what's your mindset like how we get to the year um it's kind of take over uh a lot expected from me this year so uh not not a baby anymore got to take on this this year 2 campaign Road going to start cor our defensive back um just got to perform at a high level set the bar for I guess kind of dominating the interview now but um uh with Devonte transferring to FSU obviously I'm sure it was nice having him here for your firstman and everything but what's it like you know now you guys are stayed apart uh obviously I miss him uh it was cool having a brother on the team sometimes on the other side of me but uh things happen for the better he's in a better place for himself now uh I just wish all the best for how much trash talk do you expect the week of the the FSU game I'm not going to get in his head too much but definitely definitely that Saturday night it's going to be some some noise
