Ball State vs Kansas St big 12 championship!!!

welcome everybody to what should be a memorable experience for everybody here in the building the Big 12 championship game has a history of wild dramatic finishes and based on this matchup today we could be in for another one there's a lot more at stake than a championship trophy here today there's playoff positioning and potentially just getting into the playoff on the line as well so the stakes have never been hired as we'll see the number 12 team in the country the Kansas State Wildcats taking on the fifth rank team The Ball State Cardinals 3A sports college football I'm Chris fower here in the booth with Kirk herb Street and I think we've talked long enough Kirk let's get this game [Applause] going kickoff team out there getting ready and this is it the battle for for the conference championship trophy Fields it just outside the goal line tackled at the 22 good job by the coverage team Ball State Cardinals offense will be the first up today we'll see if this quarterback can get off to a great start Kirk so much for this offense and this whole team really orbits around him yes sir the deao Mr center of the universe it's his world when he's out there and it's up to him to create and orchestrate the details on the field his team his way can't wait to see what he does [Applause] today offense will keep it on the ground here a try the middle but gain nothing on that play they're just trying to establish the Run there's not much there but give credit to that defensive line and those linebackers attacking the line of scrimmage to negate any chance at all second down play coming up thrown quickly caught in the right flat and a big game before he goes out of bounds the offense Heats churning gets a fresh set of downs well the receiver does all the work here man that is easy living for this quarterback really good footwork by the receiver gets the separation and at that point it's just pitch and catch for the quarterback and they'll keep it on the ground running back has the hand off they bring him down to the the 45 and a solid gain to keep this drive going nothing better than an offense on first down to be able to pick up big positive yards like that you can either keep giving it to the back or it can set up play action and get the defense to come up to the line of scrimmage and you can throw it over top of him they stop him after a 6yd gain so second and four great job by the offensive line here opening up some holes and giving the running back room to run on first down plays like this can open up the playbook for the play caller allow him to make that defense think are they going to run maybe play action maybe throw the ball down field and they'll stop him short of the line to game important third down play coming up quarterback PR snap adjustments now for this defense on third down it's a handoff they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one well there's that excellent linebacker with a clear path just run and down he quickly you know I think one of the great things about watching this guy play all year is his vision he just has great instincts that time the defensive line ate up all the linemen freed up the linebacker to get into the back field and the result is a tackle for a loss for the backer moves the football to the 30 good enough for a first down Chris if I'm not mistaken this guy's already over 30 yards on the opening drive of this game another nice play right here this defense can't stop him just keep feeding him the football that run produces a decent game just love watching this back run Gets behind that offensive line lowers his pass against a nice solid game now this is the eighth play on this drive looking to pass this time makes a quick catch heads out of bounds after a solid game more than enough pick up a first down I really like the throw here Chris but the fake off the play action was just as effective you saw the second level Defender trees for a split second and that helps open those passing Windows one back in the back field and he'll get the car the defense able to stop him at the two this defensive coordinator makes some adjustments this back is on fire to start this game you better start committing those safeties down overloading that line of scrimmage CU this is physical he's got speed and he is tough to bring and he takes it in for the score touchdown Ball State you've got a conference Championship on the line here what a start for the offense man I just want to give a lot of credit to the quarterback and the offensive line they really set the tone here on this drive allowing this offense to be able to make the plays that they needed to to give them this lead here early [Music] so they'll try to add to the lead now with the p and the P makes it s nothing here's the kickoff team let's see if they give the return an opportunity to bring this back he's going to bring it out of the End Zone from a couple yards deep solid coverage there they get him at the 15 that's where the defense will take over so Kansas State's offense takes the field the first chance we had to see them today right kir let's take a quick look at the impact players for today's game and how they're going to affect the outcome these are your leaders on the field and in the lock room these are your go-to guys not only when you need a play to be made but also when you need somebody to Rally your team first down play call coming up how aggressive will it be they'll try and run it here's the running back they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one I think we all kind of get caught up in third down what what's an offense doing on third down but I think what's also important is how well you defend first down if you can hold your opponents to a short gain or a tackle for a loss you throw the offense out of whack and their game plan gets much more challenging to try to come up with that first down play action here on first down running out of time in the pocket and it's the senior getting home with the sack I like the call here but you can't run long developing playaction passes like that if the offensive line is not going to give the quarterback time to throw that sack makes it second down and [Applause] forever from the shotgun it's a handoff not much on that play brought down short Christino has spread eror over the years has always grown offensively but what I've been always impressed with the defenses that really build their defense to play in space still have an ability to be sound at the line of scrimmage and defend a running game it's exactly what we saw right there well KK ball state has the lead here and at the end of the first quarter let's check out the stats so far theyve flipped ends of the field we're ready now for the second period a big play here after the brave offense trying to convert here on third [Applause] down there's the snap he's looking to throw has no one to throw to there on third down and now it's a fourth down coming up wild cats will line up to pun it away he's on to boot it away now and here's the return and the returner is brought down here comes the Cardinals offense back on the field the last Drive the ground game was so successful ended in a touchdown we'll see if the defense can respond to it this time look come out throwing here to start the drive CAU quick to get him down quickly not much of a gain on that completion quarterback looks down field make this throw he wants to be able to get the ball to be able to pick up enough yards for a first down but instead gets the ball at least underneath to the drag route and get some positive yards a hand off to the back stop at the 36 that's good enough to move the sticks Chris it's the consistency of this back is giving this defense fits they've got to come up with some changes up front this guy's already over 50 yards and if he keeps running the way he is not only is he having a great day but it's going to give this quarterback a chance to hit some big plays down field off play action first down looking to throw the ball it's an out route the catch made heads out of bounds is a short gain on play Chris I think you got to give all the credit to the wide receiver here manto man coverage on an out route that is a TP ass good inside move on the stem to separate from the defender and a great throw by the quarterback near the sideline that's a big game before he goes out of bounds and a move the sticks more than enough for a first down the defense has got to do a much better job here adjusting to the pre- snap motion they just kind of stayed in place and it gave the receiver plenty of room there to make a nice play it's a strong run keeps the drive going first down now here's the snap looking to throw caught over the middle it's SW and a nice first down game there they get him down but very close to the first down marker CHR how about the offensive balance these last couple plays we're seeing from these guys not only are they balanced but the explosiveness a big run followed up by a big play through the air and puts a lot of pressure on this defense he's moving out of the pocket nobody open downfield he just throws it away man I like this play I not only is it the right play throwing it away like that but giving that he had no other option he just did what he's supposed to do to survive and get ready for this next down try and muscle for the first down some room with the 25 game moves the ball to the 21 and a fresh set of downs was a nice job up front by the offensive line but give the running back an assist for setting those blocks up before he's able to get down field for the first [Applause] down looks right for a quick completion he's tackled but down at the 9yd line defense getting pushed around this defense has got to do a better job in coverage if they want to get off the field anytime soon you keep defending like that and this offense could have 50 on you by the end of this game your offense sets up in scoring position with a new set of downs off the play fake looking to throw catch made on the left side brought down at the seven the completion moves him closer to the goal line Chris it's so easy to get excited about the receivers on the outside and their ability to make big plays but the slop receivers are just as exciting especially with their mess quickness and ability to make guys miss in the middle of that field here's a handoff testing the middle The Freshman brings him down quickly it's a nice play by this defense and now you're thinking about third down and goal from around the five yard line you got a real shot to come up with a stop here whether they run it or throw it you get a stop here maybe holding to three points the after a long drive it's a third down is it a touchdown or a field goal this is a four-point [Applause] play one man at the back field and he'll get the football they stop him for a 2yd gain which will bring up fourth down timeout is called to tuck strategy late in this poose game with halftime approaching and the field goal unit coming on the field now now the offense will spend a time out here wanting to come up with the perfect call on this the important play coming up so instead of a Chip Shot attempt for a two-score lead they keep the offense on the field to go for it on fourth down receivers now getting some new assignments before the snap from the shotgun he's probing the secondary and they've got him it's a sack as they come up empty on Fourth and goal and the Kansas State offense is back out on the field they want to cut into this leag before halftime they have to work quickly now so here we go first play of the drive under two minutes for halftime first down looking to throw the football nice grab it's Rios and he will make the first down tackled at the 26 and the Wildcats hustle to the line to run the hurry up here comes a first down pass attempt here's a throw underneath to the tight end and he's out of bounds after gaining decent yardage now complete it's second down now and he drops back in the gun grab down the middle it's Jennings he'll be taken down but he does have first down yardage the Wilds come to the line to set a fresh set of downs on First and 10 here looking to throw the ball caught in the back field it's Rios the running back time just kind of sneaks out of the back field and shows his hands on that nice catch short completion there second down coming up looking to throw again pressure is coming Junior steps up and makes an impact play they crank up the temple here for this important third down play and he'll set up to throw receiver looks it in it's complete the reception hits him about seven yds with a fourth down coming up here defense spends their second timeout to try to recr and the wild CS will send the pun team onto the field look going to kick it away for the second time and that sets up the return and the returner will be brought down ball State's offense back out on the field now they've got to be pleased with their performance here in the first half let's see if they just play it cautious and get to the break in front receiver in motion now looking to throw it on first down catch play on the out route and a big game before he goes out of bounds the offense keeps churning gets a fresh set of downs one play moves the ball to the 44 it'll be first [Applause] down verac drops back from the shotgun he's got it for a big game they'll go down after a nice pick up on the play it'll be a first down what about changing the play now at the line on First and 10 they'll look to throw it and he's looking to make a big play downfield touchdown Cardinals this quarterback on fire today this guy can do it all we've seen him go behind coverage and make plays down field we can see him catch the ball underneath just like this when he catches a football he is so dangerous after the catch this one leads him into the end zone for the six points so they'll try to add to the lead lead now with the pat with the extra point the lead is 14 so after the touchdown here's the kickoff and we'll see if the opposing offense has time to answer before halftime and the return starts just inside the end zone tackled at the 14 not very good field position to start here okay the K State offense is back out on the field now we'd expect a prudent decision here backed up near their own End Zone just run the clock out and get to halftime pulls it in it's Jennings well the defense didn't have any time at all to get pressure on a quarterback he gets the ball out of his hands pretty quickly on the hitch to the receiver no press here the defense backing away quick throw catch made they make the tackle As Time expires that'll do it for the first half M's going to WRA up the first half here let's kick it down to Kevin Connor with our halftime update Chris a first half that gave us some riveting moments not to mention the dramatic and the unexpected in other words a dynamite start to the Big 12 Championship talk about a first half from that dude out of the back field he's been a total Game Changer and how many top playe moments have we seen on Miss tackles Alone video game moves from one of the shiftiest players in all of college football and they'll kick it away now to get this third quarter underway and he'll leave the kickoff right there they'll start from the 25 and the Wildcats offense back out on the field it's line getting set up it's a first down play and they'll start the third quarter here on the ground Nowhere to Run no coring for no game well they keep trying to run the football and they keep getting dominated at the line of scrimmage that has been a theme throughout this entire game we've talked about it earlier in the game it's not changing at all they become one dimensional and I think it's allowed this defense to really lock in on that quarterback and the junior quarterback shows his toughness keeps this drive moving the wild cats will come to the line to crank up the tempo these are the kind of players to keep defensive coordinators up at night you spend so much time putting your plan together to stop the pass and then nobody accounts for the quarterback on a run solid gain moves the ball to a 43 second down after that run on the previous play now they'll switch it up looking to throw the ball [Applause] here makes the catch he can't stop him and the ball to the ground bble recover by the defense going the other way how about this defense flying in there trying to get their hat on the ball they do and they're able to pounce on it for a big turnover and the Cardinals offense is back out on the field now remember last scored a touchdown can they keep clicking here over the defense come up with a stop and here's the handoff they make the stop but not before a solid gain that time look I realize on any play call when it's properly executed it can go to the house for a touchdown but the runs that really make a game plan work are the ones where you get just what you need and he barely got the first down but he got it and just a short gain this time they're able to get him down see that's how you limit what an offense wants to do this time the defense just won the battle up front at the line of scrimmage not giving up any big plays everybody's Gap sound it's really solid defense on that play quarterback wants to throw it on second down he finds the running back in the flat over to Juke gets three now tackle is finally made but not before a big game they'll spot it at the 20 defense kind of lost the running back here makes a nice catch and gets the first down in the [Applause] process the offense is clicking and the defense just searching for answers now on First and 10 looking to throw a sack in the pl could not escape the pass rush nothing is more gratifying for a defense to be able to sit back and play zone and still get pressure on the quarterback with your defensive [Music] front single back takes the hand off able to fight for a decent gain here in that running play I know this defense worked very hard at halftime to come up with answers on how to try to slow down this running back after the big first first half and he's already at it [Applause] again now in third and very long looking to throw but they don't connect it's incomplete and it brings up fourth down hey it's an incompletion but it's a nice job by the quarterback I know it didn't pan out but the most important thing is he didn't turn the football over and he didn't take a sack it'll give your kicker a chance to put some points on the board if they opt for the field goal ball here on fourth [Applause] down he missed it field goal no good lead remains at 14 after the Miss oh off the upright there boy he hit it clean it was end over end I thought it had a real chance and the ball just kind of kept moving on him and then d right off the [Music] UPR and the Kansas State offense is back out on the field the fumble the last time out symbolizing their struggles here today it's why they're in a big hole now begin with a quick throw to the left defense surrounds him just a short gain on that completion second down after that run on the previous play Al aler ball hand it off they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one they don't the defensive end who shows some quickness KK getting around the edge that time yeah this guy's usually getting around the edge to put pressure on the quarterback but he reminds everybody here that this guy's a complete package not only can he fresher the quarterback but also he is very very talented and shows the physicality he has against the run as well the pass is offt Target he got hit as he threw as the third down Pressure Works they'll kick it away here and the returner bro down by that coverage team Here Comes The Ball State offense back out there they need something out of this possession the last time they settled for a field goal attempt but then they missed it solid gain moves the ball to the 37 a tell you to be able to pick up a nice gain like that those offensive linemen have to sustain their blocks gave him a chance at a really nice game offense getting set up here's second [Music] down9 phly they flip it to him on the Jet Sweep they bring him down but that's a solid gain on the [Music] play Ready first down and 10 offense looking to throw the ball caught over the middle it's Morrison they tackle him but the game moves the ball with 36 quarterback sees that this defense is dropping way back in zone coverage so he does the right thing gets it underneath to that drag route and picks up a first down hand off to the single back and he's able to find some Running Room nice pick [Music] up well Kirk ball state has the lead here they got to be feeling pretty good about things as we wrap up the third quarter let's review how we got here now entering the final period of play is there an epic comeback in store we're going to find out offense getting set for a second down here to begin the quarter someone on the line there moved a bit early offense gets a 5y penalty false start off pretty easy call for the head coach he will accept that penalty of [Applause] course important second down play coming up there's the snap looking to throw the ball he pulls it in for a big game heads out of bounds after a solid game more than enough to pick up a first down so hang on here we got a timeout as the coach wants the officials to take another look he thinks he might have a shot at getting this [Applause] overturned not the news the coach was hoping to hear he took a chance calling a timeout to get the replay we'll see if that proves to be crucial a new set of downs after that completion and looking to throw now on first down pass complete on a Crossing route stop made at the five offense that have first and goal now I just continue to be in a this offense even with the lead these guys are going to play for 60 minutes they do not let up here they are typically you want to run the football here to work the clock but these guys stick to the game plan and keep throwing the football trying to get more yards second down and goal upcoming we back to throw again defense is coming after him they trap him and Sack him back at the 10 a really good job by this defense the quarterback looked to be trying to work through his progress aggressions to find his open receiver but before he knew it he's on his back urgency here got to cut into this lead it's third down and goal pre- snap motion from the [Applause] offense third and goal looking to throw the ball incomplete and that shot to the end zone Chris you get this deep into an opponent's side of the field and Come Away with three instead of six and man it is a let down that's certainly not what they're looking for here on thir third and long from inside the Red Zone knocks that one right down the middle and they add to their lead and that one my gosh I mean it's almost too easy nice kick after adding three more points to the lead they're set to kick it off well he thought about coming out but instead takes a knee and they bring the footb to the 25 yd line okay the kstate offense is back out on the field now last time was a quick three and out can they get a drive going this time finds an open Target on the left side runter scoots out of bounds after gaining decent yards that completion makes it second and [Applause] short from the shotgun drops back looking for an open man they get to completion and the gain just good enough for a first down a new set of downs after that completion first down looking to throw the ball it's incomplete he was hit as he threw good pass rush there on first down so second down after the [Applause] incompletion and the quarterback drops back looking for an open man short pass finds the tight end he is a load to bring down finally EX Tackle by the cornerback gets him offense facing a third and short from the 41 can they make the first down and avoid a tricky fourth down decision and it's incomplete as he just overthrew his receiver that time it's a good job by the defense here on this third down and now it's going to bring up a big fourth down play and a decision here for the head coach SPID needs a completion here on fourth down makes a grab he's not going to get there the defense Rises up and makes a huge fourth down stop here comes the Cardinals offense back on the field big guys up front lined up it's first down looks like the QB is changing the play at the [Music] line he'll keep it on the ground trying to run some clock defense stops him but that's a solid game hey it's a great job of running the football it's the right idea but the backs got to stay in bounds because remember with the new rule college football the clock still stops momentarily until the referee sets the play clock for the next play and then it'll start again so stay in bounds and work that clock it's a first and 10 play coming up for the offense [Applause] quarterback drops back we going to test the secondary and it's incomplete the defender arrived the same time as the football and now it's second down they'll run this play from the pistol formation and they'll try to pick it up on the ground just a four ydd gain so it sets up third and six ready fight 55 and that's the two-minute warning this offense looking to run out the clock and secure an impressive win here today now it's third and short in the 24 one of those line of scrimmage battles that could help decide this game dropping back they're going to throw for the first down a bullet but it's incomplete brings up fourth down interesting call here Christ to throw the ball on Third and short unable to come up with the first down now here at fourth down you got a big decision to make do you kick the field goal just to add to the lead or maybe go for this here chance to drop the hammer and he's throwing forward on fourth down makes the catch and that is enough for a first down tackle made but a strong arm throw by the senior quarterback well Chris here's an example of what we always talk about on fourth down the receivers got to run a route beyond the sticks great awareness to know exactly where he is quarterback makes the throw receiver gets hit but he's beyond the sticks for the first down here comes a throw from the Red Zone oh the pass is picked off not much room in that return tackled at the 16 but an important takeaway from this defense that's just important decision by the offensive coordinator and the quarterback working with the lead run the football here and work the clock instead throws it into coverage now they got a chance to get right back in the game [Music] and the Wildcats offense back out on the field well this has been a disappointment they've had their doors blown off here just playing for pride at this point first down looking to throw the football receiver makes the catch and he's shoved out of bounds by the defense short of the first down marker that completion makes it second in [Applause] [Music] medium and the quarterback looking to make a play through the air trying to create here on the move and it's complete downfield oh tremendous toughness here tackle made quickly but a big chunk play for this offense through the air and the offense will wisely spend a timeout after the play clock Management's going to be very important here in the final minutes here comes a first down pass attempt it's a short completion at the big tight end he's brought down after a big first down gain it's second and short maybe an opportunity Kirk to take a shot here looking to throw yet again fires it to the wide out and he pulls it in the catch a quick Tackle Spot the ball at the 11 and a red zone opportunity now they come up and quickly spike it stopping the clock coming to the line on second down this is important they want to avoid a third and long here's the snap quarterback looking to throw he's got it near the end zone brought down at the five after the completion defense gave push back now they've got to hustle to the line and get set shotgun formation here on third down intercepted In The End Zone not much on the return but they create the turnover boy with this quarterback love to have this one back they're trying to work themselves back into this game here in the second half and the defense comes up with a big turnover that could be the nail in the cofin [Music] ball States offense back out on the field now they had some good things going on the last drive but it ended suddenly with the pick Let's see what they can do here quick pass here comes a Jet Sweep that'll pick up the first down he's brought down to the 21 a running play gives the offense fresh set of downs a pop pass on the Jet Sweep crossing the 35 breaks into the clear it's a Sprint inside the 20 finally brought down to the 12 an explosive play puts it in Great scoring position I really love the way more and more offenses are using the receiver in motion pre- snap give him a chance to get the football with a couple blockers in front of him he's got all that speed built up you get the ball in his hands and you better look out he could be aw after the races they'll stop him behind the line for a loss of one what an amazing run these guys have had and now they can call themselves champions of the Big 12 to become a piece of the history of that great conference and now with the playoff spot locked up we get to see what they can do against the 11 other best teams in the nation and that is going to wrap it up we enjoyed this one here for K herb street I'm
