in darl K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium where the horns are up and this burnt orange crowd is ready to help Texas hooker we have a ranked versus unranked battle coming up here and you know how chaos can ensue if they start smelling an upset as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West the Colorado State Rams taking on the third rank team in the land the Texas Longhorn for EA Sports college football I'm Rees Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me guys it's time to get it going and the Rams will get us started with the opening [Applause] kickoff coming out with it it's golden not nearly as much as he'd hoped when he brought it out in the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 the Longhorns return team certainly didn't do the offense any favors there and as this star running back comes onto the field everybody in the stadium knows he's going to get it the defense knows it doing something about it is quite a different thing it's hard to stop him he's hard to handle because he can do it in so many ways he can run by you he can run through you he really has the whole package and that's why he's a superstar and that's why they'll feed him early and [Applause] often good good spot after that seven yd pickup on first down it's second and three from the gun running back gets to give he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and a great job by the linebacker you can tell starting to crowd the line of scrimmage get up there in the line of scrimmage see it diagnose it get in the back field get the running back on the ground for the tackle for the loss this is the type of play that can give the offense momentum third and short from inside the 20 out of the gun the inside G and he'll pick up the first down after a tough run there and I think on that last run play on third down here early in the game they're making a statement that we believe we're the more physical team and we're going to run the football even if you know it's coming at you nice job they' got the ball at Midfield I expect to see more run plays coming the run from the shotgun after the pick up of nine it's second and one coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that the big pick up on first down leaves them with second and one looking for room it's maxter and they'll spot it at the 45 that's good enough for a first down I think it's really important for this offense they get this guy going early in the game and they're doing a nice job of that right now remember he's the kind of running back who gets better as the game goes on that's a really good omen for this offense considering his success now early and the Longhorns are rolling down the field oh and they'll try to catch him with a pass grabb behind be the line it's blue and the defense settled in to stop that one for a short gain again this is a running back that can hurt you running it between the tackles and he's dangerous out in space they like to throw it to him out on the perimeter as he picks up a couple yards there they'll line up for a second down [Applause] play out of the gun the running back has it a strong tackle and wrap up from the Junior I'll tell you this is a running back who's very very dangerous and the defense did a good job getting him down there but they got to do a great job gang tackling because this is a guy that can break tackles and turn those types of plays into home runs here comes the seventh play of this opening drive they've moved it well but now facing third [Applause] down now the play fake and there was nowhere to go for this quarterback and down he goes man you talk all week about setting the tone quieting this crowd don't let him get involved you know how you do that get a sack and force a punt on the first possession of the football game that's a heck of a start for this defense number signals for the fair Catch and makes it at the 20 defense has dominated the early part of this game and the stats point that out [Music] emphatically both sides trying to find a little rhythm and efficiency and move the ball some here as we start the second quarter from the shotgun the inside Ki defense there to stop him after a gain of one to the 22 man that detac as a freak athlete did you see him come out of the stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness the Rams are in the hurry up [Applause] breaks the tackle just searching and working for the Running Room as he gets it out to the 26 well this guy's a weapon throwing it and running it and you know he's going to try to hurt this defense with his legs it puts so much stress on the defensive line to chase him and the fact that the play is extended so long yeah if they've got a spy defensively if someone's athletic enough to run with this guy that's going to be maybe a a sound move moving forward schematically tackle is made after the first down I love when players understand situations and they understand where the first down marker is and they understand where I got to get to a lot of people you'll see run north south and try to bounce out wide and make big plays sometimes it's not about making big plays sometimes it's about getting that first down to make sure I get an extra set of downs instead of trying to make those big touchdown runs quarterback Quick Pass to the receiver finds his way for three out to the [Applause] [Applause] 33 here comes the hurry [Applause] up moving the running back forcing the defense to adjust back to pass it's Fowler niosi and that's going to be incomplete a lot of contact on the play but no Flags it'll be third down not many receivers like to get hit they just don't okay they're Pradas that's what they are that's who they are nice job by the defender you could tell he was catching the football he was going to put a hit on him to make sure he had to think about something later and you could see the ball pop out and fall to the ground on third down drops to throw looking to the big tight ends it in he's got first down yardage as they move it to the 44 when you're a QB and you have enough time to take out a sandwich and finish the sandwich before you have to make a pass down the field that's a good day at the offense and the Rams have it with a first and 10 moving the running back trying to get the D to tip its hand the defense wouldn't let him lose there and it was a completion but they lost yardage got to give the defense credit watching film anticipating they knew that this offense had this play in their back pocket they knew about the speed of this wide receiver in different ways they were going to try to get him involved everybody on defense on the same page playing together I love it after losing a couple of yards is now second and 12 as they try to keep this drive moving off play action and that's just a flat misfire not even close to his receiver and how loud is it in this building this is crazy this these fans are going absolutely nuts and I used to love when the fans got involved and I'm on defense because it messes with the snap count it messes with the communication and it can really rattle on offense on third down he'll try to pick it up through the air fires into traffic picked off and they'll close in on him after a good return on the interception timing has to be so good you're throwing at his zone defense over the middle of the field Ball's got to come out specifically on time cuz these windows close really quickly ball there thrown a little bit late as a result it's an INT the longhorn sending the offense back onto the field that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to do a better job this time around erasing the mental mistakes and just trying to solve the defensive riddle understanding what they're trying to do to you and attack them I like this tight end he does a really nice job on his route running he's been beating man coverage he can find the soft spots and zones you got to get him involved now on First and 10 from the 35 wants to throw it's ERS makes the grab down the middle all the way down to the 25 yd line they move the sticks first down and a really good job by the quarterback being very decisive he saw his match up he went for it he attacked it got the positive game I would say he's going to find that guy a few more times today they're down to the 25 on First and 10 he's looking to throw it fires to the right it's caught downfield and tight coverage right there but he makes the grab and they've got it on the 11 and a red zone chance nice job by the quarterback and receiver working the curl route receiver got his depth and he fought back to the football helping make that completion a whole lot easier been tough to find the end zone here in the first half but the ball's in plus territory first and 10 under a minute to go into the end zone and he wanted to get the scrore right there but it falls incomplete and listen as a quarterback you're trying to find the match up trying to find who's open I don't know if anybody was open but that was not a greatly thrown football I don't know if it was miscommunication but the ball thrown out of bounds and just on to the next down going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone he CAU it that completion will take it inside the four and the offense is threatening quick timeout from the offense to save precious seconds not a lot of ground to cover and not much to defend a big third down in the Red Zone off the play fake and he was hit just as he was releasing the pass and it falls to the ground incomplete coming up well on Third and short in field goal range they dial up the pass play quarterback was trying to get through his progression there was just simply nobody open couldn't make an accurate enough throw ball Falls incomplete Now setting up a big decision here on fourth down they'll have to settle for a field goal attempt oh oh now the kicker's going to throw it it's a fake shades of little giants the Mad Hatter is loose and it's a touchdown just textbook execution on the fake field goal and trickeration equals touchdown we saw them practicing this throughout the week but when are you going to call it are you going to call it because you got to have the onions to call it in a big moment they call it they convert what a call by the offense P unit on the field and with the extra point they get the first seven of the game that last Drive covered 52 yds on their way to the score and they after the drive with a four ydd touchdown pass the kickoff team out there set to boed [Applause] away looking for an alley from inside his own 10 didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 guys will have another peek at this Rams offense now they're backed up here Jesse wonder how aggressive they're willing to be I think it's going to come down to how much confidence they have in this quarterback and his decision making because you cannot throw an interception at this part of the field with this little timeline and I think that's conversations you've had with a young fell on the sideline be like what are you comfortable with right here that we can run maybe stay aggressive but make sure I don't make that mistake that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with the halftime update thanks guys looks like we've got a superb matchup in Austin today and it's been said football is a game of Ines and guess what based on the comparison between third down conversion rate today and the average yard per play how can you argue that I mean the low-lying fruit is to look at some of the explosive plays we've seen in panic but really this game is going to come down to which team is more efficient when they have the ball and how they play when it matters most and with that let's get it back to our fellas at DKR and the long horns will boot it away to start the second [Applause] half on the move from inside is five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 we will see what this Colorado State offense can get done this time and in a low-scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just gets frustrating and you got to that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful caller now use it against yeah David I think for a play caller this is tough right it's like you have to get the perfect play on just to get a first down in these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play and it breaks this trend they able to get him stopped just shy of the first down Mark man the defense you hold your breath when this receiver has the football out in space you have got to make sure you're playing with outstanding Pursuit nice job there but as this game goes on they've got to keep an eye on this guy and make sure they know where he is at all times on Third and short they'll try to pick it up on the ground here the Rams are stock but not before getting the first down well no real mystery there and I think this coaching staff has a lot of confidence in their offensive line to get the push needed to give that back just a big enough crease to fall forward and get the first and it's so hard my room for error is so small when I'm the defensive line like I got to get off the ball as fast as I can and and try to get some form of penetration just stop that ball from going north south they don't do it there and they give up the first [Applause] down and the Rams racing to the line in the hurry up to throw it's fower niosi l one deep down the right side and the incomplete pass taking a shot on second down and they'll be left with a third down and that was good defense again and unfortunately we've been saying that all game long really really good defense or listen you can spin on the other side this offense has really been bad here comes this home crowd as the defense tries to get off the field on third down he's got it found a bunch of room and got it to the 44 yd line these two guys just on the same wavelength they make crutch connections all the time and that's practice man that's all summer that's all spring just so many hundreds and hundreds and thousands of balls where you know exactly when that guy's going to break you know he's a stud you're going to feed him especially on these third down situations trying to find his man on first down whips it out to the back and just a short safe pass away they pick up a few and just no hesitation there by the quarterback right primary target not open so find your check down where's my running back yeah I know I'm under pressure I know I'm going to get hit but I'm not taking a sack I'm going to find a way for us to get a few extra yards here that last completion sets him up on second down [Applause] they'll go to the ground and he's brought down after a nice gain well it just seems like everything is working for the offense on this drive another nice gain this time on the ground this offense hasn't found the end zone yet starting to move it's first and 10 he wants to throw and the ball is picked off couldn't find much breathing room to return it but the interception has this offense in business at the 27 who says defensive backs don't have hands nice job breaking the football and making the catch a lot of times you see guys SWAT it down or you see them trying to catch it looks like they have two left hands defensive packs don't catch real well nice job breaking up the football nice job securing the int actually catching here comes the Texas offense man oh man these offenses just haven't been able to find any room to get things going David and to quote the great philosopher reys Davis this is very UNG good just nothing working for this offense Palmer they got to find something well the plays look good against the scout team during the week in practice but they have just not been able to find the Rhythm against this defense today here comes the offense on second down hand off to the single back turns it on in Midfield and they get him down at the 43 but this is the kind of explosive play you want to build on one of the things I love about these misdirection type plays is that you can pull offensive linemen and get extra bodies at the point of attack so you're setting yourself up with good angles if you execute it properly David and you saw it right there and saying the word angles means a lot because that's exactly what you do now I can block down and I can leave somebody unblocked pull around kick him out use misdirection in the back field really just get your eyes as a defense on something else and then go the other direction nice misdirection play call by this offense well and on these little push passes timing is so important you're trying to snap it right as he getting a full head of steam when he gets the ball he's hitting the outside David it puts the defense in such a difficult spot you immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion so everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over that's why offenses love to run it just it makes the defense communicate and see if you can just get them out of the spot guys it is Texas who holds the lead they're sitting in a strong position here with the lead let's take a look at our game [Music] summary one qu to go and might we have the makings of a classic fourth quarter finish third down coming up after the completion they'll try to pick it up on the ground and I don't think he got it the defense Stands Tall on Third and inches defense is about firing off hitting the offensive guys and staying in your gaps everybody knowing where they're supposed to be you could tell the defense everyone was right where they're supposed to be nowhere to run so here we are on fourth down and this field goal kicker is it's a fake he's looking to pass and the quarterback will be slung down back at the 43 boy you look smart when it works out but when it goes a you are left to second guess [Applause] yourself Colorado State takes over the ram offense returns to the field the sledding has been tough scores have been at a premium Jesse in every possession seems like it could switch the momentum of the game yeah ree for this offense just feels like they just haven't been as physical and for this offensive coordinator David he's having to go deep into the Playbook just to try to generate a first down well and the good thing is there's not a ton of game pressure because the other side's not scoring either but if you can find that one thing that get that one positive play and then maybe you get those ju is going and something can start to build the Rams headed quickly to the line it's a draw nowhere to run on that when he loses four on the carry yeah and this offense has to find a way to run the football they got to get more creative or whatever that looks like for this offense something to jump start there because nothing really going on the ground yeah defensively though you got to give them credit too because they knew that physically going to try to be challenged up front that was a big M Mo for this offense coming into it but the defense they've risen to the occasion their front seven has dominated this entire game they make the stop trying to pick up just a little bit at a time to get to that first down marker this offense has their work cut out for him man because the coverage has been so tight and if you're not throwing to the sideline or you're not getting past the sticks this defense is going to tackle you in bounds like they just did on that last play and bleed the clock to the air it's Fowler nikosi and they got him for the sack this offense is going to have to come up with a plan to block this guy he is an absolute monster and he showed you all his tools on that sack trailing by a possession they need to keep the ball they'll try to convert on fourth down we reached the two-minute warning and the defense needs to come up with a stop to close this thing [Applause] out trailing by a touchdown getting late in the fourth and this is a huge perhaps a defining moment in this game he's taking the Deep shot and makes the grab in the end zone touchdown Colorado State great job with the score and listen right here at this point in the game there's still going to be time less my defense is going to have to make a stand regardless I'm going to kick the extra point because the field goal still beats me if I go for a two-point conversion [Applause] we've got a timeout here as this coach is challenging the call he wants to give the replay Booth a chance to have another look the coach still thinks he was right the officials say he was not the challenges denied and the timeout is gone and no problem on that extra point and we have a tie ball game here in the fourth a very efficient five playay scoring drive and they finished the drive with a big play through the air scoring from 51 yds out we've got a Dandy going here all tied up in the fourth quarter and about to kick it away the returner will field it and try to do some business couldn't find a way to create that broken field as he stopped at the 25 and here comes the Texas offense back on the field scanning the field it's yers and this will be picked off a crossly turnover in a tie game touchdown Rams a great return for the touchdown any return for a touchdown is a great one to a defense what a play by this defense the offense going in to take the lead no no no flip the script the big pick six now you're leading in this ball game what a play by the D now for the extra point try late in the game the extra point is good and now in the fourth they're up by a touchdown and an extra point score they're lining up to kick it off after the pick six and that defense will come out feeling it he'll bring it back from inside to spot he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 and here come the horns they've got it again on offense he wants to start this drive with a pass finds his man it's B and he goes down after making the grab picks up a few but still short of the first down and I love when my quarterback see Zone and knows exactly where to go with the football sees the wide receiver running the drag route knows when to throw it the trigger for the easy completion trying to get everybody set with the clock still running dialing up a second down pass play fires to the tight end he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down he knew exactly what they needed there made the play and got out of bounds to stop the clock and you got to keep this turbo mode on right we got to keep going fast the clock's running down fourth quart need a score great execution to get the first down we need a lot more of this on this drive looking to throw it's yers he makes a catch and he gets out of bounds to stop the clock they've got a first down they're in plus territory and they've got a chance to win the game the Longhorns come to the line with a new set of downs the aerial assault continues tight end finds a soft spot the offense gets a quick timeout at this point every second is precious in search of that tying touchdown they've moved the chains a couple of times it's first and 10 again looking to move it through the air fires to the right makes a connection works his way to the four yd line and they'll have it first down and goal he is dealing on this drive completed all five throws and now they have first and goal yeah and who needs balance when you got a guy like this you trust him getting the ball back in the pocket the ball's coming out spreading it around the field nice decision making this drive has been surgical for this QB they're trying to get to it and he can't get it off taken down what a huge play this late in the game that's a play the defense needed right it's been a battle all game long here we are it's late everybody's tired they've given up a few yards on this drive but they come away with a huge sack at a big moment the hurry up now second down clock ticking double time hustling to the line they spike it to stop the clock it's now third down third and goal coming up here looking to throw and he needs a bunch and that's incompleted Defender all over him knocked the ball to the ground fourth down coming up what a fantastic job by the defense that time forcing the incompletion they've got the lead late setting up fourth down can they come up with one more stop if they get it they might win this game down in the final period in a tight game and they will go for it on Fourth and goal fires into the end zone and the pass is caught for a touchdown and it looks as if we could be headed overtime man this place is going nuts your offense com through in the clutch when you need it great job now baby free football let's kick the extra point and go to [Applause] overtime and they're going to go for two and try to decide it right now Powers forward he is in and they roll the dice won't seven for the tie they take the lead with the two-point conversion about to kick it away after scoring the [Applause] touchdown from inside the 10 yd line he'll bring it back able to find enough room to get it out across the 25 he's brought down at the 26 got to get everybody lined up quickly time winding away and they've got to push the ball down the field he's taking a deep shot late in the game the pass is incomplete and there are two ticks remaining on the clock one of the reasons this defense is so hard to move the football on they've got a safety back there he's just reading the QB's eyes and he so a so fast he's able to break passes up and right now it's like he's just toying with the quarterback he's inviting him to try and take some shots knowing that he's going to get there to disrupt the ball a deep throw as the clock winds down and the pass is incomplete and the ball game is over and this will be a game of what might have been [Music]
