how does the portal does it work differently in April than it does in December I mean is It sped up is it slowed down is it is it not quite as chaotic you know it's a you know experience is really unique to itself and um you know when you it was it was probably chaotic there in December just the the number the pure numbers of of guys that were in you know the evaluation process obviously you know you have Signing Day you've got you know school starting there in January so I mean it was a it was an accelerated process that you worked through it was important for us to get you know if if there were guys that were going to be coming you know through the portal we wanted to try to have an emphasis of getting them there in Spring um you know just to be able to to be a part of the off-season workouts you know being able to uh um you know kind of get a true sense and build those relationships with the guys that are here but you know just like last year um you know we had a couple players that joined in the summer and you know it was uh you know we had great success with that as well so you know we look at the the needs if there's anything that we think we can help you know help our program with whether it's you know guys that will be able to to come in and contribute and bring the dynamic you know to our team that we feel like will make us better and uh you know so it's just been kind of working through that that process but uh you know it definitely is it doesn't seem as chaotic because you know we're we're really very selective right now but with that said so after spring practice I don't know the numbers and we're not going to talk about individual players but seven or eight guys have left the program since since spring practice that's kind of the price of doing business in college football in 2023 like you know the roster won't be the same for the cheese at Bowl as it will be for spring practice and then it won't be the same on August 1st that it is on May 1st right I mean it is it is part of you're part of the opportunity for guys to really evaluate where they are you know for us to evaluate where they are to have you know real conversations is that part of the exit interviews that you do with the players too it is and I mean and players know too I mean they they go through they go through Spring ball they get to see you know you know where they are um you know every player has has a has a desire you know and they want to they want the uh to be in put themselves in the best position to achieve that and you know we're very transparent and honest with our guys of you know where we see them at the at that time and then you know for for guys that are a part of our program I don't care if they start in the summer you know if they've been here for six years you know whatever that that story is um you know it's about making the most of the opportunity you have to compete and you you know we try to lay out the the best plan of improvement to go be their best and yes some guys it is it is you know a good option for them to to go and explore other places and you know maybe situations that might uh you know help them get on the field quicker or or you know just you know different situations that could arise so it is I mean it is a different age in college athletics that you know transfers going in transfers going out I mean it's it's something that um it's kind of an a new way of operating but it's still it's still about trying to help these guys you know achieve all that they can and put themselves in the best position because whether we have players that leave the program and there still are guys there's still guys that I care about you know deeply and seeing them be successful and um you know they invested a lot of work into our program and so it's you know I'm definitely rooting for them as they take that next step is it kind of like I don't know if it's the draft or when you're when you're getting your recruiting schedules lined up for the high school kids like we needs we have needs here here and here and then after spring practice let's just say for example you lose a couple kids at one position does all of a sudden that need go to the front of the list did it go to the front of the list do you did did it change the last week and a half for you guys as far as we we do need some debt that is a couple certain positions that maybe be we didn't think we needed two weeks ago those are those are all possibilities and there's guys like you know I was I was really pleased you in the spring to you have some early freshmen that enrolled I mean you look at uh you know KJ Kirkland you know quindarius Jones I mean those guys in the defensive backfield were guys that we were really excited that they signed we're really excited about them coming in but you know they've shown some some traits that I think are gonna be able to help our football team you know why don't they continue to improve and grow and um so it's it's twofold yes there might be some people that leave the program that could open a need but there's also guys that entered the program that you know we feel bring bring quality depth but we're still going to always evaluate to see if there if there is you know the the right person or the right the right situation that we could bring and add you know a playmaker to our offense defense special teams wherever that that role might be but as long as they fit you know what we're what we're looking to continue to build upon so you know it is always evaluated but yes it could it could add in some situations you know from at times but uh you know we we're pretty confident in where we are and what happened within our within our roster was it a relief though at like I don't know 1201 on May 1st that it's over like no good how does it work as a coach now where there is this deadline of like okay nobody can go in the portal anymore it's done is there a relief of something like that that next day or I mean you you have a pretty good sense of I think you're not going to be surprised by anyone yeah I mean you but there was there was nothing that really happened you know that late in the process that was a surprise anyway I mean you have you have conversations and there's um you know I've got a pretty good pulse of work where things are and um yeah there's some like I said there's some real conversations and um and just understanding you know you exactly you know how we evaluated you know guys coming out of spring what that was going to look like in the fall and um you know sometimes choices are made you know by players or by families or you know all the things that surround student athletes nowadays and that uh um you know guys might look for a different a different uh you know place and so um you know there wasn't weren't a whole lot of shocking things that happened um but you know we wish guys all the best whether you know some guys graduated and are going to finish their eligibility other you know other places or there's some guys that you know they chose it was it was might be a better situation out there and you're helping them in any way we can
