SEE SOME FROST UP AHEAD WITH MY FULL FORECAST. >> LEAH. OKAY, BRIAN. THANK YOU. NOW OUR TOP STORY TODAY. IT IS THE GRAND OPENING OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA'S NEW OFF CAMPUS SAFETY CENTER. THIS IS LOCATED IN THE DINKYTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD, WHERE CRIME HAS BECOME A MAJOR CONCERN OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. KELSEY CHRISTENSEN LIVE RIGHT NOW OUTSIDE THIS NEW CENTER WITH UNIVERSITY UNI CITY'S EFFORTS TO KEEP STUDENTS SAFE, KELSEY. >> YEAH, THE MAIN GOAL HERE IS OUTREACH IN DINKYTOWN AND THE UNIVERSITY SAYS THIS IS THE MOST THAT THEY HAVE INVESTED EVER IN PUBLIC SAFETY. WE HAVE SEEN A LOT OF CONSTRUCTION OUT HERE IN RECENT WEEKS LEADING UP TO THIS GRAND OPENING. THIS WEEK, RIGHT HERE TODAY. IT WILL BE ON 14TH AND UNIVERSITY, WHERE THE FORMER KITTY CAT CLUB WAS EVEN KEEPING SOME OF THE HISTORIC PIECES INSIDE ON DISPLAY. SO THIS NEW CENTER COMES AS CRIME HAS INCREASED OVER RECENT YEARS. IN FACT, JUST A FEW MONTHS AGO, IN APRIL, THERE WERE THREE ROBBERIES REPORTED IN JUST 25 HOURS IN THE AREA. THE SCHOOL SAYS THE NEW SAFETY CENTER WILL BE A CENTRAL SPACE FOR UNIVERSITY OFFICERS WHO HAVE STEPPED UP PATROLS ALONG SIDE PARTNERING AGENCIES. IT WILL ALSO SERVE AS A COMMUNITY SPACE FOR THINGS LIKE SAFE STUDYING, SELF-DEFENSE CLASSES AND SOMALI YOUTH. LINK AMBASSADORS. >> IF WE CAN EDUCATE THE STUDENTS ON HOW TO BE SAFE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, HOW TO PREPARE FOR AN ACTIVE THREAT SITUATION, HOW TO HANDLE CERTAIN STRESSFUL SITUATIONS IF THEY'RE DEALING WITH SOMETHING, UM, TO HAVE ENOUGH RESOURCES AVAILABLE FOR THEM, BUT ALSO TO HAVE THAT OPEN COMMUNICATION CHAIN WITH THE BUSINESSES DOWN HERE, WITH OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS. SO IF THINGS DOES HAPPEN IN THE AREA, WE CAN RESPOND QUICKLY. >> AND THERE ARE CREWS INSIDE RIGHT NOW WORKING ON THOSE FINISHING TOUCHES.
