Conan's HUGE Thrall Changes! | Living Settlements Explained

Intro Conan's latest update the age of Heroes chapter 1 is finally now out on the public beta client I gave my initial Impressions back on Wednesday but today we're going to Deep dive on living settlements no time to waste let's head to our testing ground so what exactly Synopsis has changed well the short of it is this crafting THS and now World THS meaning they are placed into the world like Fighters and can be dressed up ordered to follow Etc additionally Crafters will now emulate life they eat sleep drink rest and work but they don't actually need any of these things they're basically acting they'll wander between their need resources places where they can satiate the desire for food rest Etc and basically develop their own routines bear in mind the system only affects crafter throlls archers Fighters and entertainers are unaffected by the needs system so let's get into the gritty detail but first self-promo patreon for all the news early link is in the pin comment you get weekly previews of what's coming selfpromo over let's get into it when you load this Breaking & Conversion update for the first time any of your previously placed crafting throlls will be itemized in the benches you left them in for me the thrs were stuck in a static position where they weren't technically there nor were they occupying space on the bench but it's sort of like their ghost was remaining behind very spooky I fixed that by just replacing the crafting stations however I have heard from other sources that if you just log out and log back in or probably on a server restart to that will also fix it from there you take the itemized Stoll out of your bench and place them in the world but if you leave them itemise in the bench or another container they will not count towards your thr limit but also won't work as a thrw they're now placed like fighters in that you place them into the world and there they are you cannot re itemize them again just like Fighters the same is true for when you break thrs on a wheel of pain that whole process is exact ly the same as it used to be aside from the step of actually placing them in the world I have seen people reporting that thrs have been disappearing after breaking them on the wheel this appears to be occurring on the smallest wheel of pain I tested 20 on the greater wheel and it was fine alongside testing about 10 on the Lesser wheel and I didn't have any issues however this is a small sample size and it is in single player so the issue May crop up in other tests I'll keep an eye on it as the beta progresses and I'll update this if necessary because the thrs remain itemized after breaking you can still swap and trade them with other people so now that we know how to put THS into the world let's look at how they maneuver wandering THS will wander Wandering in a 50 m radius which is roughly 19 and 1 half foundations so slightly wider than displayed here they can also wander up to 50 m vertically too but only if there's an available path for example a thr could easily wander up and down here as the entire path is within their wander radius however even though this bridge is well within their radius the full path and the entrance to the bridge is outside of it so therefore they cannot get up also throlls will only wonder if they have a reason to do so they will not just aimlessly walk around they only move when they have their next task queued up they're able to open doors but they will also close set doors behind them almost immediately they can also open Gates but from my understanding they can't interact with elevators hatches or Draw Bridges most people myself included were a bit worried about their pathing and I'm happy to say it's surprisingly decent they don't tend to get jammed up on doors or on each other so far I've seen one instance of a thr getting stuck on another but to be honest that was kind of my fault I really didn't lay the crafting stations out well and that caused the jam aside from that a lot less friction than I expected so we've covered how they wander let's address the cause of their wandering Crafters Needs will only move around and do tasks to fulfill their needs from what I can tell their core needs are this work sleep rest food and drink pretty self-explanatory they don't actually take any resources in this process they'll just do animations to look like they're eating sleeping Etc Additionally you might be worried about a thr sleeping in your bed apart from the marked displeasure of finding a thr fully decked out in armor sleeping in your clean bed the thr does not affect your spawn point at all so there's no worries there the needs of this system are fulfilled at need resources placeables or stations where the th can act out their needs this includes beds for sleeping workstations appropriate to the crafter's profession for working for food they like to congregate around campfires and ovens but they will eat if they can find a seat anywhere even if no fires are around and drinking is a bit of a weird one I actually haven't seen THS drink yet but if you have a weld they will stand around it for a bit hang out at the watering hole I guess if a need resource station is not available that need is basically invalidated your thr will not attempt to fulfill a need they don't have a valid station for so for example if a thr only has access to a bed and a workstation all they'll do is work and sleep as of right now there is currently no downside to THS not being able to meet their needs the dev said in a recent Q&A that could change in the future but as of the Chapter One beta you will make no gain or loss from having THS unable to fulfill their needs the needs system can seem a little complicated at first but really you don't need to think about it too much given that there's no negative consequence and THS don't pester you to build them a bar you can pretty much just let them go on with it the other Crafting Changes side of the coin with this system are the changes to how crafting works if THS are going to rander around they won't always be at the bench you want them at so what happens to your crafting bonuses well crafting benches now have a radius of sorts remember that 50 m radius from earlier in the video well that applies to crafting benches too any viable thr within 50 m of the crafting bench will be displayed on the new UI elements at the top of the bench this gives a detailed breakdown on the perks they provide and the exact numerical bonuses that entails and allows you to select which th you would like to use if you have a shield R and a temper R within 50 m of the bench for example you can choose which perk you would like for the craft you're about to initiate as long as your thr remains in that 50 m sphere you'll be able to use them on their relevant benches now say for example you have seven blacksmiths you won't actually be able to see them all on the bench UI instead the bench will display your three highest level Crafters however it will ignore multiple THS of the same type for example I've got four skate rides here yet only one will display on the bench because they're all functionally the same however if I then spawn a shield right and a temper right they will be on the bench alongside the Scout right the dev said they did this because the three thrs was the maximum amount of variation they could find and they thought it would work the best additionally I do recall Dennis saying on the reveal stream that the 50 m radius of the benches could be pulled in or pushed out depending on player feedback aside from that three thrall limit there are no other restrictions on the benches additionally a single crafter can spread their bonus across basically as many benches as possible with seemingly no limit for example this single Shield right spreads its bonus across all of these Armory benches making life a fair bit easier for us but probably quite a bit more busier for him overall I think the crafting changes are really valuable they make life a lot easier and it's a big improvement over the prior system in my opinion finally Smaller Topics let's tackle some of these smaller topics for the living settlement system crafter THS at the moment have kind of buggy following Behavior they will technically follow you but will constantly try and run back to their need resource until they're out of the acceptable distance to reach them you can use crafter THS as followers and move them between bases but it's going to look very strange until you get them away from your need resource this issue is doubly buggy because it seems quite inconsistent sometimes Crafters will just behave themselves and follow you like normal so at best again inconsistent additionally Crafters can't really use any thr emotes they're not disabled but the need Behavior overrides any emotes you choose so it effectively doesn't work Fighters archers and entertainers are unaffected by this change crafter THS are now able to fight back against attackers though there is also a chance they'll attempt to flee or cower in fear instead they're definitely not a replacement for Fighters by any means that being said of course you can give them weapons and armor and allo pots so they're not necessarily easy targets but they're nowhere near as good as Fighters Crafters are also now affected by the down but not out system so if they get down you can pull them back up with the same dbno rules as Fighters there is currently no way to forbid workers from entering certain areas opening specific doors Etc that might come in the future but for now keep need resources near the crafters and they won't have need to wander off into other areas of your base you could theoretically put them in an area with no doors to keep them there a recent Q&A said that there is a chance they could end up teleporting through walls but that does seem like unintentional Behavior based on the wording you also currently cannot constrain a worker to a cage or other restraints that might change in the future but for now you can't do it finally as of right now the thr cap is currently unchanged that might change in the future it depends on the testing the devs are doing and also likely on beta feedback it will be announced ahead of time if it changes and of course I'll report it here also I've not heard much on the server performance front yet I know if server performance was really bad I would have heard about it so hopefully it's not disastrous I know there are people testing this system on the beta servers I will be keeping an eye on that and maybe making a dedicated video about server performance with this feature in the future it really depends on how severe the effect is if there even is an effect and on Gathering as many data points as possible that being said I think the official launch on consoles and of course on PC is going to be the real test of the servers for living settlements so the final question of Is Living Settlements Good? this deep dive is living settlements good I'm going to be brutally honest I expected living settlements to be a mess I've wanted this feature for a long time but I expected performance and pathing and everything else to just be a wreck given I have been testing this on single player but so far I've been pleasantly surprised things are working smoother than I thought they would it is still a bit rough around the edges and I have had some crashes in the beta client especially when I'm using the slow-mo command but to be fair I've also had plenty of crashes in the beta client in Prior updates too this form of living settlements is honestly a lot better than I expected definitely still needs some work and some tweaking and looking into the reports of THS disappearing and server performance are probably going to be my two high priority aspects that I want the devs to really look into and eyeon out but so far it actually seems really good all that being said it is still early days if there are suddenly any big problems that are found or serve performance just crashes then I will make a separate video about it additionally if there are any developments about server performance that indicate it's an issue worth reporting on and assuming there is enough data on it then I will also report on that as well additionally I'll also be working on a video about how to build and decorate with this system in mind to avoid as many issues as
