the pressure stay on schedule and stay turnover three the three big keys for Elon in this [Applause] game play fake Downing wrapped up from behind and sacked at the 10 behind that's a loss of five yeah once again you know watch watch him skin the corner here right now and and and you know those are shots that create turnovers and we just you know got to do a better job on the edge those are tough blocks on those tackles these guys are athletic but they you know now now now we keep moving backwards not a lot of good calls on second and 25 no surprise that a Manny Diaz team is coming out sharp on defense pressure off the edge again look out Michael Reese getting home this time is gets sacked again this time a loss of eight and he barely stays out of the end zone yeah you're going to see this in the replay right here gives him a little stutter and he skins him on the edge puts the quarterback down I think Elon really has to start considering some screens some draws and a few more runs and uh try not to get them uh themselves pushed back like this now you're punting from the back of your end zone you know uh I if they can't get many yards here and so this this third down you got to watch out here on third down that you know you don't spit it to Duke so I mean these are these are tough calls play it safe on Third and 33 Thomas Straight Ahead some Breathing Room away from that go line the 12 yd line you know the biggest concern defensively for a lot of folks that are Blue Devils fans was up front they lost all four starters on the defensive line RJ Oben transferred to Notre Dame Dwayne Carter in the NFL uh but so far the D line looking very sharp three sacks already they're dominant and and that's something times where you see the mismatches um in these games it's the uh you know the D line against the o line ran Brown back pedaling from the 40 inside the 30 he's got it red Shir freshman from Winston Salem will dive back just short of the 35 yd line and that's where Duke will have it for their second offensive series leading 3 nothing how about the defense early on under the new coordinator Jonathan py looking very sharp getting to the [Applause] quarterback no easy on a t fansville by Dr Pepper holy smoke State on first down Jordan Moore with another catch give eight on first down you know they went in motion and got Elon to check the coverage to one high and ran a little slant speed post and and really hurt him with it trips to the near side going to go with an inside hand out ja W Moore nice duck around to get away from the pursuit and gets across the 45 Y Line of three yd pickup they'll move the chains you can tell that he's got a real strong legs and good leg Drive he's got power for a smaller backup Jack W trying to BU the void left by Jordan Waters who is now playing for NC State this time he's going to be tripped up that's Jonathan Robinson the corner shooting in no game and they tried to run a uh wide Zone play a stretch play and uh he was able to knife that and uh keep it for no gain right there so um it's first time they really ran to an attached tight end Duke Jack wesmore is going to come off Payton Jones sophomore out of norfol Virginia comes in on second down at 10 4 20 to go here in the opening quarter three nothing D home opener Malik Murphy first pressure he's really felt somehow got the way to Jordan Moore on the comeback route makes the catch at the 48 yd line of Elon and it's going to be third down yeah Malik is a really nice got good catch Malik is such a big guy the Blitzer came free and had him like kind of around the ankles and it kind of like was you know just not affecting him he's so big and strong and his height and allows for such good Vision coaches were talking as l about that this week now he's going to go up top that big arm showing it off Samir ha can't make the and Caleb curtain the fcsl amican from a year ago was in the coverage and disrupted that and it'll beat fourth down Caleb did a really nice job they came with a six-man pressure Malik saw it he went to his one-on-one route and uh really threw a pretty decent ball it hung up there just a little bit probably a little too much and uh Caleb curtain went in there strong and and separated uh separated him from the ball so good defensive effort good recognition by Malik Murphy as well and on the blitz curtain led the conference with four interceptions last year to pick six at Wake Forest in last year season opener as Kate reynoldson punts it into the end zone and Elon will have it at the 20 when we come back we're getting to know this edition of the 2024 Blue Devils trishan in his sixth year as head coach at Elon coming up three straight winning seasons took him to the FCS playoffs a couple of years ago I think he's got to feel pretty good about his team's defense right now Duke had a 14-play opening drive held him to three points and then got off the field after five plays on Duke's second series it's got to protect this their quarterback here right now Hing the offense finds some traction looking at four yds so far for Elan on offense Shan Baker in the back field they'll get their hand off nice move up the middle across the 30 and darts to the 43 yd line best run of the night for Elon and it's a 13 yd pickup for Baker yeah this is a really good job here the back he does a nice job of of finding that crease and getting in it but this is what I'm talking about you know run the ball a little bit right at Duke right now and take the pressure off this quarterback so that's a that's a nice first play to start the drive they got to be happy to see Baker out there running around transfer from Bucknell has been dinged up during Camp pretty healthy there first and 10 stay on the ground so they went to 12 Personnel they were going with two tight ends right now trying to extend the gaps on Duke right now and create a little bit of a run game so that was uh you know that was Personnel change they said they were going to run some too tight end you saw it right there Elan went six and2 in the coastal athletic last year couple of top five upsets in the FCS they were not picked in the preseason FCS top 25 felt a little slighted by that Chandler brayboy goes in motion number four is their top Target he's going to get it on the receiver screen slips away and rolls out short of the 40 yd line Terry Moore Alex Howard combining on the stop that's a four ydd gain so here's another third down for this Duke defense coach another critical third down but he did a nice job on second down with that quick touch and the ball's out of his hands right now he's not going to get affected by the rush they got it in the hands of their best player I think those are all really good things that throw it down the [Applause] field Phoenix hav converted on thir down they need six yds here to keep this drive alive but not going to happen as Downing is sacked but there are two penalty flags on the field Vincent Anthony dropping the quarterback for a loss of seven this might be [Applause] Holden number 70 offense penalty decline down boy that's the second penalty on a Shark Feeding Frenzy here Jeff JK the red shirt Jor punter for Elon has been the offensive MVP so far twice flipping the field there another good kick this is going to take a roll in inside the 25 inside the 20 and dead inside the 15 yd line the pit transfer Jeff JK with another boomer this one 57 yds Blue Devils go to work from their own 14 yd line Malik Murphy in his debut hands off to Thomas and he lost the football but it looks like Duke has recovered kazim Moore at the defensive end their best guy up got in and stripped that ball for the Phoenix yeah I mean he got in at that mesh point line for Duke completely revamped through the portal I mean they didn't even have enough bodies up front to have a traditional spring game they had to go seven on seven until they got reinforcements up front one of them Caleb crings who was a starter at Elon last year and now we got a timeout here timeout Duke that's their first charge timeout seconds go here in the first quarter Duke taking their first charge timeout here comes the third down when we come back first 15 minutes in the books and SE and there's number four getting the first down that's a creative way to get Bray boy involved yeah I mean it's going to affect the coverage you know they're coming off a Jet Sweep action and they're making sure that Duke has eye discipline and then they they run the quarterback and they come downhill and they get some really good plus yards that's those were two really nice plays you just saw good job one of the most explosive players in the FCS an All-American Return Man a year ago averaged almost 20 yds per catch as well Downing back in he'll hand off to Thomas not much that time you know Duke has loading the box right now they're playing one high one free safety High putting an extra hat in there I think you know Manny obviously knows they're trying to run the ball a little bit right now so they're going to try to outat him at the point of attack so there's a little bit of cat and mouse going on right now and as any good defensive coordinator offensive coordinator is going to do of course Manny Diaz hired Jonathan paty to run the defense we asked Manny that you know is it hard to keep your hands off the defense and he said yeah but you know I'm the head coach and I truly trust Jonathan paty I'm sure he does is a heck of a football coach but you know Manny's Elite as a coordinator so on the draw not much Cameron berson getting in to take down Thomas berson one of the veteran linebackers for Duke expected to see the most playing time of his career this season he was really terrific at the bow game and so far off to a good start here tonight well that's a great example of how Duke wants to play they want to be downhill at the linebackers and vertical up the field with the defensive line so that was uh you know that's a that's a negative yardage play right now and puts him in a third and extra [Applause] long see if py dials up the pressure a rush five and they're going to run right by it TJ Thomas pass that run blitz picks up 14 into Duke territory and it's a big third down conversion so now you saw a draw right so we saw the quick touch the Jet Sweep QB run on Third and short now you saw the draw on Third and extra long avoid letting the quarterback have to sit back there really well done well done by Elon bigest play of the night for the Phoenix looks like they're trying to maybe bring F pressure here Duke from the 41 Downing heated up and Spilled at the 50 yd line there's berson again Aaron Hall also getting dirty on the play sack number five for the Devils yeah so they brought that star pressure and ran right through the back and uh you know that's the kind of stuff they they've got to you know try to avoid the other thing I think is they they sit at the line of scrimmage for a long time sometimes and I know they're trying to get the perfect call The Perfect Defense but I just feel like that puts a lot of pressure on everybody up front when they're in their stance that long I you I didn't I get worried about that Shan Baker checking back in in the back field here's Downing this time he has time to throw to the near sideline receiver went down that was D AK look like he got tangled up there a little bit with Chandler Rivers no penalty flag incomplete second down check that third down it came with a little pressure that time looked like a single dog fire and it looked like they had an add-on uh addon to that you know they call the green dog when with a bunch up they try to run through the pressure again and Baker gets inside the 45 yd line it's going to be fourth down and long to sha Stone the guy they call day day starting for jayen Stinson at the Rover St Duke here in the first half as Stinson is serving a suspension in the first half for a targeting call in the second half of the blll game right he's such a fantastic player but uh you know uh those calls carry over even even after a season's completed so J here pass the track after the ball can't get it off and it's turned over at the 40 5 yd line jurk was scrambling and Wesley Williams gets to it and Duke will have a short field boy jurk has been fantastic tonight he just fumbled the [Applause] snap and it was a bad one Brock Wilkins the punch Snapper he's not happy with himself [Music] this going to be the best starting field position for Duke tonight after the bad snap on the punt Blue Devils take over at the Elon 45 yd line leading three to nothing Samir Haggins goes in motion for Mal Murphy making his deep debut tonight he's going deep looking for more and it's incomplete well covered again in the secondary that was khil Baker the free safety the transfer from NC Central getting the pawn great protection up front watch the protection here by the Duke offensive line Malik's got all day to throw the ball he puts it up there uh just you know maybe just a little bit more lead out there with that throw GL about the arm Talent Malik Murphy big cannon of an off and what a catch by Mo just went up staged it out of midair takes it to the 30 yd line a gain of 13 in a first down that was a fantastic play by by by Malik I mean they ran a little jailbreak screen and he had a bunch of pressure in his face he threw it off his back foot with touch beautifully done we back to the ground game yeah this is not the same style of quarterback that Duke fans have seen the last couple of years Riley Leonard I mean Riley Leonard in a lot of ways was more of a runner before he was a a passing quarterback I think it's reversed now yeah was used to be a basketball player I think he's pretty darn athletic and but I think um you know they're just a different style right now so instead of the Q runs they've got the Q relief throws that that last run I thought maybe he might have missed that upcut right there ground going in motion Murphy up P of time he's going to throw and more is not down I think they're going to say incidental contact Duke FS want py flag that's Caleb kurton the third down and 10 D two for five on third down this run for scar Thomas is not going to get him to first down yardage as Hamilton makes another stop Dylan Tucker the corner also in on the play that's going to be a four yd gain fourth down with seven minutes to go they left a uh unblocked defender in the hole there uh somebody had a missed assignment on that play um did a nice job running the ball though and making that a four- yd run so they're going to go for it here yeah well they're in the red zone and uh you know they're they want to score touchdowns I like [Applause] it Murphy airing it out to the endone incomplete wow that looked like a little bit of an offensive Pi he looked like he pushed off there and they he got away with it but uh you know um now was Jeremiah hazley the tight end in the corner of the end zone you make the call at home ishmail Atkins in coverage it doesn't matter it's incomplete he wants ball ran that inside Phoenix have also stood t on defense as the Phoenix get it back this going to be a 2yd loss both of the teams looking for their true identity on offense here so far tonight they are um you know I think right now both teams would say their identity's been playing physical hard and fast on defense but on offense you know they're they're missing some opportunities Duke's missing some long shot balls right now and they'll get him they'll connect on them that last play right there was a lot of penetration On The Run game seven tackle for loss for Duke sets up second down at 12 550 to go here before halftime now P false start number seven still second down that's Carlos more the new right tackle so that's the third penalty at that position tonight for elar well you know this is classically what happens right they're getting beat on the edge the speed of the defensive end from duke is intimidating them and they're anticipating the the TR the count trying to get out of their snap and that's that's you know they got to screw their cleats into the ground I used to tell them grab grass with your up toe grab grass lock the field under slam Dow hits Bray boy and that's what Bray boy can do Chandler Bray [Music] boy the call love the call Little slip screen out here love the call off of a counteraction nicely done again put it in that quick touch category the ball's out it's in the hands of the receiver in space beautiful first down for Eline that's a gain of 21 biggest play tonight for the Phoenix still just 48 yds of offense maybe that'll jump start something here for Elon on first down back to the ground and Baker tough sleding here right now well Duke is you know playing a seven-man box one high so they're plus him with an extra half and they're saying to him hey you know you really can't drop back and throw the ball and Elon wants to run the ball so they got outnumbered at the point of attack and then there was penetration up front by the defensive line of Duke so not a great play tell you this defensive line for Duke they suffered in the spring as well because of the offensive line having a lack of depth they couldn't go with full scrimmages full practices during the Spring but the D line has looked sharp here first game of the Fall there's Bray Boy again that's could bring up third down in about seven as rivers and Anthony get to the ball carrier four minutes to go in the half another quick touch puts him in third down here getting in BR boy be interesting to see how many touches we'll tally those touches up at halftime and we'll have that number for you but uh third and seven here third and long uh just in that long range and uh these are tough Downs in distance got to protect this quarterback here maybe they move the pock maybe we'll CH fourman rush for Duke Dow gets rid of it wide open at the near sideline it's and he's going to step out 40 escorted to the sideline by Stone I mean he was wide open that allowed for that great throw and completion right now and got a beautiful first down here Elon with a little bit of tempo a little bit of momentum Mak the catch the 48 yd line Duke ter TJ Thomas good run that's going to be a first down carry for Thomas three time All State running back at Norwood High School in Thomasville Georgia getting loose well they brought that fire from the field again it looked like that star came and the running back what a job he did if we see that on replay here it is right here I mean he just gets his foot in the ground Bo Boop and he escapes one of those tacklers cuz they weren't all blocked and he made a play six carries 30 yds for Thomas they'll stay with him this time Duke is ready that's going to be a loss of a couple how about this 2 and2 minutes to go here in the first half Elon not only in this game but they're driving potentially for the go-ahead score and you know we've seen early on in this season these FCS teams hanging right around with the FBS you know what it does is it Brees a little confidence you know and and goes into half with the with the concept hey we can do this you know we're in this game this is a big call though here second and long right now I'd be careful with this call I wouldn't be in a drop back here right now and that's going to bring us to the two-minute timeout that's new in college football this year among the many changes here's Downing scrambling Pro toward the sideline and it's incomplete to another third down and long here for there is a penalty marker now far side of the field and it's going to be against the Phoenix they've also added tablets clay this year so each team has 18 tablets to be able to show replays on the sideline refor third down you got a lineman down field you know and right now I I I'd say to myself let me try to get five six yards kick a field goal here in the Downing getting heated up by Rivers Got Away has to throw it to the sideline and now we'll see what they do here fourth and 11 is this going to be Jack burkowitz territory he is their field goal kicker FCS freshman allame a year ago we'll see if they Walts him out you know again why why drop back and pass there move the pocket run a draw another screen try to just pick up five well run the ball pick up five yards and try to kick the field goal get points on the board now they're going to kick the field goal but it's just you know get another five yards closer you know what I mean um and and don't lose yards and he did a nice job of getting the ball out of his hand in the end but he took another shot this will be a 50yd attempt his long last year was 44 yds so this is he going to be real test and not Elon decides to time out second charge time out will McCoy to snap no wind kick is up on its way and it is off the cross off the CR just not enough BR with a smile on his face he knew he was right on the screws but didn't have enough gas on it came of inches couple more inches it clears the crossbar not quite enough inches a little bit of penetration inside on this thing you see that with the high hand in the middle of the field right there that uh you know that that that might have just threw the timing of that kickoff just a little bit I believe that was uh Howard so he did a nice job of creating penetration inside I was a little concerned about that cuz they you know they got they're bigger a little bit more uh powerful than than these guys from Elon Jonathan py the defensive coordinator for Dukes in yep that shut out still intact here tonight couple of timeouts remaining for Duke 144 to go here in the half Malik Murphy and is Duke dbut gets it in the hands of Jordan Moore who's been his favorite Target here tonight that's catch number six for more give him a gain of seven he's well over 60 yards receiving here tonight for a former quarterback he's got a little shake you see that right there he made that guy Miss nice job could be Duke's first 1,000 yd receiver deade and now it's Eli panko making a catch good run after the catch inside the 10 down to the 6 yd line dragging a tackler started with great protection great throw really good catch and great run after catch all the things you'll like to see that's going to make him happy here going down here 55 yd gain and now Duke knocking on the door with just over a minute left CH has Mo going for the end zone and he's going to make it touchdown first touchdown of the season for the Blue Devils and it's jaquez Moore he bounced that run outside and he really outran the whole Elon front right there know they didn't have much Pursuit but he did a really great job extra point to Pino with the extra point and it's 10 to nothing Duke the big pass play that sets it up Eli pankl his first game in 61 days the 24y old looking like his old self takes it down to the 6yd line and that sets up the touchdown for Jack wesmore looked like on the throw they had quarters coverage he split the two quarter safeties and a really great throw by J Thomas wiggling his way ahead and the clock will move inside of 50 seconds as Alex Howard and Kendy Charles combined on the St Charles the Brad Cher from Liberty and there's pankl who made that big catch man is he happy to be back on the field for Duke Elon playing it very conservative as well and that's likely going to be the last play of the first half so the offense for Duke kind as to get a big play to pkle and the touchdown from ja quz Mo Malik murf so Duke beat him up a little bit find some protection see if Elon can get back in this ball game but Duke is going to have it first here to start the second out line kick off the foot of Maran and Duke is going to start at the 25 yd line so Malik Murphy the Texas transfer this is the first time that kick he's a starting quarterback of a program so you know I think we saw some nerves a little bit early on Steve but those kids have played tough It's a credit to their program and to their coaching staff I'm very uh excited about them I think they're going to have a heck of a year here seven starters back on that defense couple of All-American safeties that played well in the first half more the running back ja quz more the catch out of the back field that's going to be a gain of five Atkins gets there to make the first tackle of the second half great great play by Atkins I mean defeating that perimeter block out there by the white out making that play still a gain of four Mor's first pass and mat is overthrown intended for Jordan Moore kind of dangerous there couple of Defenders in the vicinity including one of those aforementioned allame who's trying to hit Jordan Moore six catches 65 yds in the first half Murphy quick out and it's caught by Samir Hagen 30 catches last year the number two returning receiver for Duke and he gets eight in the first down ran a little pick route out there really well executed they're going trip back 3 by trip the boundary here trying to get a numbers advantage and they got it yeah receiver screen at pkle nearly got enough for a first down he's going to get eight on first down that was a quick touch great job by Malik great job by the receiver good blocking out there well designed Malik Murphy the captain one of the four captains for Duke as he won the starting job about two weeks ago he was named the starter for the Blue Devils finds haens again inside the 40 and now this offense moving with Precision moving with some speed that's a g of a do that play that protection was outstanding he had great ball and uh you know great one after catch right there so nice job goes to pkle again he steer wrestled to the sideline by squex also Brooks gain of a about four they brought a weak safety Blitz that time and and and uh Malik saw that and and and threw the ball out there on an adjustment route Murphy o time Higgins is wide open boy they are using him a lot on this opening drive of the second half and that's a first [Applause] down ha out of Philadelphia that was rough at the end of that play uh he got the back of his knees rolled up on there at the very end end of that play watch this catch great catch gets his feet in there he's kind of out of bounds and then boom he gets the back of his legs taken out right there I'm surprised they didn't throw a flag it wasn't intentional but still was dangerous it's Jonathan Robinson the cornerback from Jacksonville Florida Elon had the third best passing defense in the coastal athletic last year and the nearly pick one off there that's Caleb curtain getting his hands on it Ethan Grace the defensive B with a ton of pressure on Murphy I don't know if he forced the throw a little bit because of that pressure a he didn't see it coming yeah no Fina Fina got beat on the left side right there and uh he took a pretty good shot Malik did he he hung on that throw a little bit too long but uh still there was pressure there and he might have felt that but uh you know that wasn't that wasn't greatly executed deep hand off Thomas try to pick his way ahead be third down and long here for Duke pretty good penetration there up front U you know by I think it's Smiley very good job by him he got underneath the pads on the left guard and and and cause that running back to have to redirect really fast so nice job on defense by El Elon comes up with some real nice plays now third down at nine in the first half Duke was three of seven on third down Murphy and that should have been caught hazley coming back for the tight end can't make the grab and so now we'll see Todd poo come out really good mix of plays um but they sputtered a little bit there at the end poo for 42 oh yeah that's good field goal tonight for Todd Pino and that makes it 13 to nothing Duke I love watching my child grow through football the conference champions all [Applause] bid elon's going to go back to work on offense Bray boy has stopped short of the 20 yeah that was one of the things that were missing with the 14 te playoff you know for a lot of years we didn't didn't have a playoff we had the old BCS style format you know the playoff was was a welcomed addition it's a defense that lost a lot of players only four starters back from that number one scoring defense last year in the ACC and look at this they swarm again Trey Freeman the outside linebacker wraps up Downing that's going to be a loss of five I mean again a lot of starters gone but don't forget Manny D Diaz is the head coach [Applause] here Freeman team best 106 tackles last year you and I had a chance to talk to him this week an impressive young man sure was uh all about football really great play by him spying that quarterback hand off Thomas bucked into by Freeman again gritty Hometown hero from Northern High School right here in Durham Trey Freeman he tries to get to a as many high school football games as he can during the season but tonight they're playing on Friday night so it a happening tonight not not tonight hopefully people are watching him boy Eli is really struggled coach on on third down as duke looks ready to pin their ears back again Phoenix three of eight on third down tonight they're in that radar all up package late hand a slow developing play and the Phoenix are going to have to punt yeah they ran a draw there and penetration and the violence at which they came up the field on defense really disrupted their play it just was out of syn and uh you know obviously wasn't wasn't very well executed Michael ree big defensive end out of Nashville getting home there's Jonathan py the new defensive coordinator Jeff jurk pit transfer doing a good job flipping the field in the first half had one of his punts blocked after a bad snap but put two inside the 20 that one's going to roll out near the 35 about the 40 yd line actually is where they're going to spot it so Malik Murphy wearing blue devil blue for the first time here tonight great fit I is wonderful he's in an offense that's going to feature his ability to throw the football and he's showing off that arm right here really nice deep ball he threw right there man laid out for that thing maybe but that was uh they took a shot you know that's what you got to do on first down took a shot here's the replay y Jordan Moore has been his favorite Target tonight just about had his seventh catch of the evening and it would have been a big play sure would have you know those first down strikes that's what they want in this offense they they you know they want player El Jonathan Brewer talked about the vertical passing game and we're seeing those vertical shots right here and uh that's what they want to get done and they're going to keep hammering away at it and the timing will get better one thing that's interesting is Dylan Tucker is up and heading over to the Elon sideline is you've got to a a Duke defense that has played really well here tonight in spite of the fact that this Duke offense plays with a very fast tempo and sometimes has given the ball back donon fairly quickly uh it's called complimentary football who they want to be and they're going to get better at it as they go a run it here on second down and 10 and jaquez Moore went almost 1200 career rushing yards coming into the night it's dropped no gain Moore had a couple of 100 yd games last year against Florida State and Virginia Jordan Waters as we said earlier goes to NC State that's certainly a big loss was their leading rusher the last couple of Seasons but they really feel that jaquez Moore is more than capable third and 10 and a big long shot and down Mo and the tight end can't hang on to that yeah another deep ball another pretty good pass just a little bit off and uh they're they're taking their shots and they're going to that's that's the that's the style of this offense and and they're going after them so I think you're going to continue to see that Nikki Dell Mullen for tight end Jonathan Brew say he's as good of a route running tight end as he's had and he thinks he has intervi potential just out of his reach so this will set up the third punt of the night for Kate reynoldson the kick fair catch called for inside the 15 yd line by brayo opening night here in Durham Duke leading by 13 but elon's still hanging around inside the stadium we can get back to Justin tell us more about it just a little bit but the one thing I do know about it steo is they have unlimited food so if you you have a ticket inside that Devil's Deck get all you can eat I know that that's right up your tree yeah I mean you know I could do a little bit of damage it's a good thing I'm stuck up here in this booth with you and not within Striking Distance you know what I mean especially if they had like a little Italian section over there that' be the end of me you like your Italian food I know that know how you think they got a DJ up there some yard games all kinds of thickness length and uh it's very impressive second and four he's going up top for more again and again just off the fingertips of Jordan Moore that is third the third time here in this ball game that he has just been a little bit too long with the Deep ball just a little bit right you know and uh you're going to see it again here just a little bit too much air on that right there but I give I give cred for they just keep going after that same vertical route you know and it's third and medium this is a manageable makeable down in distance for the offense to try to pick it up on the ground and the ground for a couple but Murphy it's a quiet 272 coach he does have an interception tonight one touchdown he's had some big balls that were near misses he has and um and as they clean that up and he connects on those this this would be a different game right now and and I suspect will be as they move forward you see the e-line Defenders right now you got guys with their hands on their hips right now I think they're really starting to feel the effects of not as much depth against this Tempo offense right now they're getting tired and Duke isn't nearly running at the tempo that they were earlier in this game they kind of taking their foot off the gas as the game is worn on as P Jones gets the hand out there third down yeah well you know maybe their their mindset right now is take a little more time off the clock you know job that's going to be penalty flag that didn't look right on the field it's going to be offside on Elon is my guess you know usually that's that free if it is out of the out of the uh hands of the back and he he hit the slant route outside think about these receivers haens Jordan Moore Eli pkle Nikki Del Mo at the tight end ran Brown who's very quick this is a deep deep position group of pass catchers that Jonathan Brewer has in his stable he does wrapped up it'll be second down and goal there's I I like their skill and uh and I think their scheme matches their skill and I tell you what I do like I like the fact that John Brewer he's in this offense though he's got some some 12 Personnel he's got some tight end Wing formations that they want to run the ball behind so I think it's a it's a nice mix of of vertical passing game and uh and some hard hard downhill runs as well there's Jonathan Brewer he's got a little M he's got a little Lashley he's got a little Sunny D start Thomas hops to the outside he's wrapped up it'll be third down and goal to go for Dukas they try to punch another one in here late Ethan Grace Dylan Tucker combining on the stop meanwhile Elon they're going to be back here in the city of Durham next week they've got another game in this town at NC Central the game's going to be on ESPN plus and I I Tony trani they're not going to win this game but got some offensive weapons obviously Bray boy he's Talent I think their quarterback's tough and gritty I think their team's tough and gritty tou that was a strike the and Eli makes the so Murphy just throws a to the blue paint and dke good protection here you know good throw good catch and good confidence Builder here for Murphy um building building that first game in 611 days and that touchdowns got to feel good for the man from Pendleton in Indiana season off to a good start here for Duke in the Manny Diaz era Manny 50 years old second time as a head coach in the ACC of course had those three years at Miami there were some good moments there were some bad moments you I think it there are a lot of people that would say maybe they could have stuck with him another year or so because yeah he's a good coach no doubt about it especially a defensive mind and the way the defense has played here tonight outstanding 15 tackles for loss the most for Duke since 2007 he's a heck of a football coach he did a great job at Miami and yes they probably should have gave him a little more time but he's got another chance here and he is going to do great things here at Duke I really believe that so you've been a head coach you had stops in Temple Boston College Colorado State after the first game of the season any season what's what's the most important thing that you have to do when you go in to talk to your players we'll have time next to watch the film and we'll we'll keep growing on the things we have to improve on but you want them to feel good about the work they got through preseason camp and be honest just just be positive honest is what I would say like one of my takeaways I think they need to run the ball just a little bit more consistently at the end they got some good runs but through the B Belly of the game they could do a little better there but I like like I like the makings of this offense and I really like what he's doing right now with this football program new quarterback in for Elon Matthew Downing is out Jack salapek transfer from Western Michigan in there at the controls now this is ran Baker gets away gets into plus territory across the 50 yd line yeah and Malik Murphy you know a lot of hype around this guy coming in the Durham no doubt a big arm Talent wants to work a little bit on the accuracy no doubt I think so you know I think just a little bit more on on the touch and the tempo of his throws but you can see he has a big arm but again he hasn't played a lot of football and so this is every every game every week is is going to he's going to grow and and and what you'll see in the next 3 weeks hopefully is tremendous development out of out of your quarterback in the leag Murphy I'm sure
