DTR - JAMARI THRASH & DEVIN BUSH IMPRESS IN BROWNS PRESEASON OPENER

pretty significant margin um this was not uh great theater in this preseason game it was not a very interesting a football game to watch and given that the men's gold medal game for basketball was on at the same time and you're getting a historic performance of Steph Curry I wonder how many people really actually tuned in to watch this game but don't worry I did I sacrific watching that gold medal game and seeing history so I could watch the Browns play preseason week one and tell you all about it so let's start and just talk about the game in general um the Browns offensively had some moments they showed some things on film that I like right they had a lot of like tight Bunch like a lot of different types of wide receiver alignment that you did not see last year they definitely had more variations it got more cre creative with how they use wide receivers and how they ran certain run plays and I like all of that stuff that we saw on the field schematically the issue is what the issue is going to be at this point of the preseason which is it looks sloppy it looks like they're still learning how to put this one down and this game didn't it really do much to convince me about how I feel about anything about the starting team really um because we have to put this game in context the Browns did not play but three starters in this game I believe on the offensive side of the ball maybe Ethan PK Wyatt teller and then anad I think two starters and then they played I think Grant delpit and Martin Emerson on the other end there weren't a lot of starters in this game there were some starters but not a lot of starters in this game so you got to take the result with the grain of Sal um but seeing where the offense is and the potential of it versus how sloppy it looked at times puts me more and more in the camp of wanting to see deshun Watson play in the preseason just so he can work some of this stuff out so it doesn't look like that versus Dallas um or so that it looks a lot crisper versus Dallas and that's the hope that you see progress throughout the preseason is that the Browns whether it's their second team or third team look a lot more crisp like look at the contrast to the defense outside of the first drive of the game first drive of the game um it's an unfortunate situation Ronnie Hickman gets left why like in man coverage uh one high on a slot fade and he just gets beat and he unfortunately hurts his back trying to run after this play um and it scores a touchdown 60 yard touchdown early on but after that when the Browns did have their I would call it their two and a half team right like it's not really their second teamers but it's kind of like they're two and a half team because you still see guys like Devin Bush out here running with the ones and we'll talk about Devon I thought he played well in this game really well actually uh but they looked crisp defensively when they had those guys out there now once we got to like the third fourth fifth string it looked like third four fifth string and like that's just going to be what it's going to be I'm not really worried about how the defense looked in the second half of this game um but when you had the guys who are going to be out there the defense looked Cris it looked like a defense in year two the offense had moments I think jamus had a a drive well his only drive where he moved the ball well but then stalled out in scoring range ended with a Kade York field goal who again Kade York looked pretty good in this game struggled a little bit with the kickoffs uh early on but fixed that and then made his extra points all one of them and his field goal so better than what he did last year right so good on K York for improving especially in the same uniform where it kind of all went to hell with you last year so that's really good Tyler Huntley was out there I think he had a couple of drives where he moved the ball really well was able to run the ball really dynamic as an athlete really good at playmaking on the run I would say of all the backups he's probably the best playmaker on the run as far as like being able to throw and run um DTR I think is a little bit better of an athlete than Tyler Huntley but I don't think DTR is as creative as Tyler Huntley can be there was a nice little pitch play that Tyler Huntley had um that was a big play for the Browns in this one um but also Tyler Huntley had moments where he couldn't get a good grip of the ball he couldn't consistently throw the football to the places where he wanted to when Tyler Huntley is accurate he's accurate but when he's not he's not like he's just a streaky kind of passer um and that's just what you deal with with him and you can live with that it's like PJ Walker plus that's how I'll describe Tyler Huntley and PJ Walker plus is pretty good for a backup quarterback or even especially a third string quarterback so I think that's where Tyler Huntley landed DTR definitely had the most impressive game you also have to ju suppose that with the fact that he played against the easiest part or the or or the lowest part of the death chart while he was out there and his best stuff did come at the part of the game where you're going to have the lowest people on the death chart out there so that you got to talk about it in that context it's not me trying to take anything away from DTR just trying to talk about it properly um you know when he was out there in the third quarter it was the same stuff that was happening with uh Tyler Huntley happened with jamus Winston where the Browns were able to move the ball fairly consistently they just couldn't finish drives the Browns went for it on fourth down a ton just didn't get a lot moving there in the fourth quarter he did get things moving and again it's against the worst people on the death chart so you expect him to be able to do this especially since he did this to those guys last year but what I did find impressive about this outing was that he made some throws more than once that you know he really struggled to make last year even in these situations in the preseason he looks like he's gotten physically bigger he looks like he is having a little bit more command over his deep ball still not great at it but a little bit more command it looks like there's been some progression the question is is the amount of progression he has had so far going to be enough to allow him to be less limited if he has to play because I think that's the determination on whether he gets that roster spot with Tyler Huntley you're not worried about being so limited that teams feel like they can just cheat and crash down on every pass that you throw and put like 10 people in the Box because they're not afraid of you throwing the ball downfield that's not the case with Tyler Hunley with DTR it was can he get to the point to where that can't be a valid strategy against him if he can't get past that this preseason then he's going to end up in the same spot he was last year if he can then there's a chance for him to elevate past where he was last year um and I did think that we saw some signs from this game that would encourage me about what we could hopefully see going forward not going to move him up the death chart yet still want to see what he does in the joint practice week and in the game versus Minnesota but today was a positive step for DTR um running backs wise I wasn't impressed with what Jon Ford did uh Pierre strong my complaints are the same as always with him absolutely no contact balance he did have a couple of runs where he did exhibit above not above average but average contact balance and it's that's what's the most frustrating thing in the world with Pierre strong if he just had better contact balance I could really make an argument for him getting more snaps but that lack of contact balance I I mean like it's abysmal I I I I can't push for it like hopefully he fixes that hopefully he shows more of what he showed on that one drive where he was putting his shoulder into people's chest but history tells me or his history tells me that that's not really something you want to bet on uh John Kelly you know he's a hard Runner still has the fumble issues uh you know I don't think we really learned anything new about any of the running backs Aiden Robbins you know the kind of knock coming out of him coming out of BYU is he's as big as like a b Scarboro or as big as a Derk Henry but he's not nearly as athletic as those two guys coming out of college so you know if somebody like a b Scarboro couldn't work out like what are the odds that you know Aiden Robbins is going to be athletic enough to work out at the next level and I saw those concerns when I saw him run um even in the fourth quarter of preseason game it seemed like he was a little bit Limited by his lack of I don't know if his quickness but he just did not seem like he was able to accelerate um fast enough to be able to get to where he wanted to get to consistently uh I got to do a study on the film to really nail down what my critiques are of somebody like Aiden Robbins but it was somewhere in that ballpark so I'll just leave that there wide receiver wise I thought Cedric Tilman had himself a nice day I thought Jamari thrash had himself a nice showing I like Jamari thrash I like where Jamari thrash could fit in with the team in the future he just seems like one of those nice utility wide receivers right he's never going to be the headliner he's never going to be first on the batting order or hitting cleanup or or fifth or fourth he's always going to be that guy batting second or ninth but he's going to be useful and I think that's what Jamari thrash's future is is just being a nice utility wide receiver I think him and David Bell are battling it out for that utility spot thought David Bale had a nice moment in this game but unfortunately he got injured in this game and that's kind of been the story with David Bale getting a little knick knacked and then not being able to compete for the spots that are available and then that kind of derailing where he is I mean his whole career started off being derailed because of an injury that he had in Camp in his rookie year and it seems like that's something that's been haunting him throughout his career thought zier Mitchell pyton had a nice game as well he had a really nice catch and run Jordan Atkins showed us a little something I really hope that Jordan Atkins can be more of what we hoped he would be uh coming into last year I know there was some hope that he could be like a 400 500 yard guy I would just be happy with 385 yards from Jordan Atkins um like that's what I would be happy with given that David the joku is going to take so much of the attention away but you still want somebody to be serviceable that's not David and joku um in that tight end room and I liked what I saw from Mitchell Peyton I liked what I saw from Jordan Atkins I I I like both of those players too the offensive line was a mess but the offensive line was probably the team that was playing with the most mismatched parts and I imagine that would affect you if you're on the offensive line where that chemistry is important um the Browns I think they played a little bit of wi teller I think they played uh Ethan Pok I know they played Ethan Pok out there um lean Jones played and then there was what James Hudson at left tackle and and what Javin koven and koven was at guard which shocked me right that koven was starting at guard over somebody like a like a Zach zenter um and maybe it's just they they dead set on having Zach zenter play one side of the line line and that side's going to be on the right side of the offensive line maybe that's the plan for Zack center right he's going to be the Right Guard so they don't want to move him to left guard to play when Joe bonio is out but jvin koven playing as a rookie guard I mean good for him for getting that spot but it it was surprising to me but again the Browns didn't even want to play Michael Dunn in this game so maybe that had more to do with it than anything else um the Browns did lose a center now again I do think Michael Dunn plays backup center for the Browns in the regular season when he's out there um so Luke whiper did go down but I think that won't really affect the Browns because Michael Dunn is usually the backup uh Center or the guy who shifts over if there's not already an injury at guard um so I think offensive line wise you'd be fine wasn't super impressed with what I saw but I wasn't terrified either I know a lot of people are freaking out about James Hudson but they said in the broadcast that Jed Wills is going to be back soon so that's a load off right and James Hudson isn't the worst out there I know a lot of people kind of like make a meme of James Hudson at this point but he's not the worst out there and when it comes to the Browns tackle def honestly I'll take it they have Jed Wills they have James Hudson who can flip both sides they have Jack Conlin they have Dewan Jones and then you can keep either jera Fetti or uh hakea denji probably jera Fetti I'm fine with that fiveman rotation um and I think that if Jet's back they'll be all right on the offensive line there so I'm not too concerned about what I saw on the offensive line I'm let's switch gears to the defense thought the Browns defensive line was probably the most underwhelming thing in this game again they didn't play many starters but they did play enough guys where I thought they would create a little bit more pressure didn't think that the natural or or the usual juice was there on the defensive line seemed like they came out pretty flat didn't really get a ton of pressure saw some one-on-one opportunities with Maurice her that he didn't win saw a oneon-one opportunity with OBO okano that he didn't win got to see your guys win those situations early in the game it cost them a touchdown because they left uh Ronnie Hickman on the island on the slot f uh mad coverage no help because the idea was that they were going to be able to get home they can't get home you know people have touted Quinton Jefferson for his pass rush win rate they have touted Maurice Hurst for the pass rush win rate same thing with OBO okaro and all those guys did play and it didn't feel like they were hurrying up the quarterback enough now I don't think this is because they're bad players they have put together good work in the NFL I just think this was a bad performance by those players and I want to see that be tuned up um in the next appearance that we get of those guys in the preseason whether that be this week or the week after um so that's really my note on the defense other than that I thought the linebackers played well mmud diabete I thought he was running to the ball tackling well early on Devin Bush played well I I I hate to say impressed with Devin Bush and not that I hate to say it but didn't go into this thinking that I'd be impressed with de Bush given what we saw from him in his last two stays where he was bad um but he had a couple of Great Moments um early in the game when the Browns got a stop on a third and short and in a fourth and short really did a good job of not just fitting his run well getting to his run fit but also mirroring the running back and following him to get into another run fit uh like that is a Devon Bush that I can work with that I saw today now there was a time where he kind of went rogue and shot the wrong Gap and caus like a nine yard run play and that's the stuff where you're like all right he can't be out there but I saw a Devin Bush out there that I believe could be worked with to be more than a special teamer and that might be something worth looking at if you were the Cleveland Browns um but I thought the linebackers had a pretty good showing in this game uh especially in the first half right after that touchdown things start to really settle down I thought the first half they they really did a good job especially when they had the the one and a halfs or the two and a halfs out there um I thought they did a good job of kind of slowing down the Green Bay Packers Pace there uh the secondary again they played a little bit of Martin Emerson Martin Emerson looked good um Grant delpit played a little bit he looked good he got a tackle for loss in this game um you know all The Usual Suspects you would expect to look good look good all The Usual Suspects that you would expect to struggle kifi all these guys you know they struggled so nothing really surprising there on the defensive front and I'm not really too concerned about anything that happened on the Browns defensive front but that's my overall view of this game I'm not really too concerned about the result of it I'm never too concerned about the result of a preseason game I thought you saw some nice stuff from some of your young receivers some of the young players on offense what DTR showed was encourag in what I would like to see for the next preseason game is more jamus Winston I think giving him one drive doesn't make very much sense I don't understand that decision by Kevin stefansky to start jamus but only have him out there for one one drive when he is is going to be the backup all year it's not like DeShawn Watson starting the year suspended like 20212 when you had to do the same thing with Jacobi brette it just makes no sense in this kind of situation that you would do it like that and I don't think anybody is being served when that happens I think this offense would have been much better served if jamus was able to go out there for three drives or four drives and really get a rhythm with the offense going I think they would have got better quality reps and then you can go to Tyler Huntley in DTR but only getting jamus one rep I mean one drive just didn't make much sense to to me um didn't love that strategic decision I understand you want to make sure guys stay healthy but you can't play that scared if that was the case like if you're you made that decision out of fear I don't love that decision um other than that I think that this is a game that they can build on especially on the defensive line and I want to see the defensive line kind of take this performance which I thought was pretty lackluster for them even if we're not talking about the starters uh and take it personal and really show that they're better than that in the next game but
