Detroit Lions Film Review: Jameson Williams

what is up do lions fans welcome back this is another all grit video short now we have some things in store today as I said I was going to be doing a little bit of a player Spotlight and of course you know the man that I'm going to highlight is J baby wayo if there was any question about who the first player Spotlight would be you know don't know me too well you don't know me very well so we're going to do things a little bit different most people when they do a film review they show the film things of this nature I'm not going to show the film exactly I'm going to point out things on still shots because I really want you guys to see what I am talking about um when it comes to some of these plays I'm going to talk about things that they were doing against J Mo things that they were trying to do to neutralize him and some opportunities that we have uh to do different things off of the play action and whatever plays that we call because of the way that they're going to cover J Mo and I'm pretty sure that Ben Johnson saw the same things that I did when he looked at the tape so without further Ado let's go ahead and dive into some things right now the first thing that I want you to take a look at here's J Mo okay so J MO is here and you can see the coverage for J Mo all right and then we've got the Deep safety all the way out here who is ultimately going to be patrolling this area of the field if J Mo were to run a post okay boom he would have that post if J Mo to were to run a go straight past these guys he would be the one over there okay so ultimately that's not what happens you look over here this receiver is here look at how much cushion they are giving him okay this is some of the the stuff that I guess we were frustrated with when we were talking about Aaron Glenn running zone coverage um I just felt like we just gave him too much cushion but I do understand the concept I understand why Aaron Glenn was running so much Zone because he wanted to keep everything in front of the defense and to a a large extent it worked uh because we did not get burn over the top we did not get beat deep the longest run that we had was a result of some missed tackles uh that was a a pass that was probably caught at about the five yard Mark right it was a 5 yard pass and then it was turned into a 61 yard game because of broken tackles so anyway the point is that there's so much space here and ultimately what is going to happen if we remove these here all right need to find like a clearer button but anyway ultimately what happens with this right so you can see this now J of course is here so we've got our two our corner here safety here again safety over the top okay J Mo's not doing anything if he goes here he's going over here if he hits a post he's already here okay so J's not really doing of anything in this situation but what I believe to be open is this one right here okay we had the running back out in the flat he's got the ability to kind of turn up and run some okay unfortunately GF locks in on Aman R st Brown Aman R st Brown catches it and he goes pretty much that way for not too much gain after that all right I think I found the clear button boom all right there we go there we go so that was that play want to highlight that play now this next play here okay let's highlight this J Mo's down here okay and this is going to wind up being man coverage I think this play was a big missed opportunity because what's going to happen here is J MO is going to go in motion right J is going to go in motion so you you see him going into motion here and the re the cornerback is going to follow him so that tells Jered goof that J Mo has man coverage against this guy here now understanding where your safety help is does anybody really think that Jameson Williams is going to be locked down by this safety the only way that this safety is going to be able to get over the top of J MO is if he takes an extreme uh angle like this to get over the top of him but what's going to happen is when he takes this extreme angle to get over the top of him J's going to run by this guy in short order and guess what you see that area of the field that's wide open right there okay hindsight is 2020 But ultimately what happened with this play was a big fat nothing okay that that was the result of that play the result of that play was a sack so I feel like once again if you go back over here you see Jameson Williams manned up you see the safety is already too far inside and this is this is the speed of Jameson Williams that safety is already too far inside he's too far away to prevent a large game hey he may be able to prevent a touchdown but like I said if you get that ball to Jameson Williams at about the 50 cuz I believe that's pretty much where he's going to uh beat his man if not before that you get to him in that little area and the safety is taking an extremely deep angle just trying to get over the top of Jameson Williams you pick up a big game here but you see in this situation Jer go is signaling signaling to J to come in motion right so you see him turn he's about to start going in motion I would have Jared obviously I'm not saying that I'm B I'm not saying anything about anybody okay I'm just saying in my opinion I would have Jared just bring him in motion to see if he's in man coverage and as as he sees him follow him okay send him back in motion check check you know whatever the call is check check okay hit him with the signal you know whatever the signal is and let him know he's got it he's got to go okay so we prevent we prevent that okay we prevent this that's what we don't want to have okay that's just something to think about and I'm sure Ben Johnson when he looked at the tape he saw that and he said okay boom so next time we have that situation next time the Rams or not the Rams but any team maybe even the Bucks lose their mind and decide to put uh a corner in now that wasn't press man okay I I press man is crazy I don't I've never seen well I can't say never in this game I did not see any press man coverage okay because press man coverage is crazy if you're going to if you're going to press Jameson Williams you better Jam him at the line and you better knock him off of his route because if you do not uh you are in for a long long day all right uh is this the next one that I want to see okay so here in this one we've got travius white okay on J Mo okay now is that a 10 yard cushion it is not but travius white is backing up okay travius white is not going to stay there okay now you can see right he's backed up now he's got a 10 yard cushion okay um so is this that play it's the same play right yeah this is the same play all right so ultimately um where did golf go with this one where did gol go with this one uh I think he went to St Brown I don't remember exactly where he went with this one but I just wanted to show you that the type of coverage that is happening with J I didn't really want to show you the result of that play that's not what I wanted to talk about this this is what's happening okay this is this man is here this man is here all right now this safety obviously um his responsibility is not J but if J were to break free of this then you better believe that that safety is the one that's going to be uh covering him so I like I said I forget what what the result of this was did he go to St Brown was it incomplete um so I don't remember but that's what I wanted to show you for that play like I said we've just selected some plays I'm not going to show you all the plays because that would take far far too long okay now this is just me wanting to show you some of the things that J Mo does I mean this is a linebacker okay J Mo drives him back off of his feet he drives him back about three or four yards with one hit okay he gets into him pushes him a little bit so remember how whenever Monty would break off a long run last season he was being he he got some sort of uh big block by J okay this is why and now J MO is stronger now J MO is in the weight room as we know and if you watch this play at full speed live action you can see J Mo just get into this guy he didn't pancake him he didn't knock him on the ground but like like I said he knocked him back three or four yards so that was just something that I wanted to show you uh Jameson Williams contribution in the Run game all right so let's get to the next play here okay again we see J Mo okay here's J all this cushion okay all this cushion now if you wanted to throw a smoke screen here then that's where I wanted that's where I would have thrown a smoke screen they had a a smoke screen on Jameson Williams I think second touch of the game or something like that uh or maybe it was his first touch right didn't go for any yards am and Rod St Brown ran motion uh his man came with him it was really just it just wasn't a well executed play right um I hate smoke screens don't like them at all but in this situation you have so much space over here um you've got Bryant Young here who's going to be crashing down right so if you were to check to a smoke screen here I wouldn't have any issue with it I think you could actually pick up some yards because am R st Bron is going to be able to get up block his man and it's just going to be man on man with J Mo and his guy uh so what ultimately happens with this play is okay nothing I just wanted to show you the oh no here it is okay so I'm and R st Brown is coming in motion okay J Mo's man is back here now okay so St Brown's coming in motion J Mo's man is back here now all right okay now this was a good play I liked it when I saw it live this is the one where uh I'm in Ross St Brown is going to come back this way and then uh gof is going to get it out to LEAP Porter out right in here in this area uh so let's see what happens with that now why am i showing you this play again like I said we're just profiling J Mo what he did and what were some of the opportunities that we had okay this man is playing with fire he is playing with fire he is much too close to J Mo but you already know this dude is helping over the top okay this is not something that you will see too much this year at all without this guy back here okay you're not going to see too many too many um DBS man covering J Mo press man anything of that nature and he doesn't have safety help Over the Top This is not Jeff okuda and Justin Jefferson Justin Jefferson probably a can I say three times better I don't want to say three times better he's a much better receiver than I'm not gonna say it that way I'm not GNA diminish J Mo right because J's my guy Justin Jefferson is probably the best receiver in the game right now he doesn't have the speed that Jameson Williams has okay and Jeff okuda had safety help over the top the entire time I'm not not saying anything okay I'm not saying that Jeff Auda lock down Justin Jefferson because he did not and all of you Lions fans that think that that happened please go back and watch the tap so much safety help over the top entire game okay so let's look at how this play unfolds and I like I said I think this is the Sam Porter play okay again this is the same play I think no it's not the same play uh so this is the next play so what what I was showing you with that play was just the opportunity that we had that's I remember now okay so the opportunity we had you check okay you check into J Mo running the fade that way okay still not going to be enough time for him to get over here here to the fade that's going to be a good game but like I said Lea did go out here and get this it was a nice game it was a nice play nicely designed so I'm not complaining about this play I'm just saying that this is an option to check into you know that's the common theme whenever you see Jameson Williams with a man right up on him looking like he's going to play press man because he's clearly he's not going to play press man but it looks like he's he's going to try to bump him Jam him off the line you can check into something um you know because that's a couple steps and he's beat we already know that all right good now the next play We already looked at a little bit okay again okay we see where J MO is right we see that we see this okay now is he coming in here or is he backing out all right so we already know what happens if he's coming in here you know J Mo J Mo should be watching him and going all right boom if he's coming in there uh it is what it is I think I know which play this is so let me um run to the next slide and see if this is the play that I'm thinking about all right yeah okay so that's the play that I'm thinking about that was J Mo's big um his first big game of the game now there is a criticism that I have about this play criticism that I have about this play is that Alan ra St Brown kind of takes his man into J okay he gets kind of deep with his um with his route now I know it was it was a Crossing route it was like a rub route type of situation I feel like again not a criticism I'm just talking about things that could be done right I feel like in this situation if Aman R st Brown flattens out his route okay so if he takes him here and J Mo keeps drifting over here all right now you've got TR davius white out of the play you see what I'm saying so travius white is going this way with Aman R st Brown he's out of the play but because he takes him up now he's squarely in the play with Jameson Williams and the result of that was a lack of a cutback lane okay so it was a lack of a cutback lane now travius white is right here okay travius white is right there imagine if he was still over here off the screen and J had this Lane to and do that with so these are just you know some hindsight things and the and these are the types of things that they're going to look at when they're when they're reviewing the film some things that they can do to get better obviously you know everything wasn't perfect Ben Johnson's not perfect um and again I'm not criticizing anything I'm just correcting I don't want people saying oh the chef said he was better Coach than Ben Johnson and he could have called a better G no I'm not saying that I'm just looking at the film and seeing some things that we could have got we could have done better okay so next time yeah let's run that route but let's make sure that I'm and Rod doesn't take his man into the play uh to cut that off cuz now if if J Mo has a cutback lane that doesn't mean that he's going to take it and he's going to score but it just means he has the possibility of doing so all right um this one again your man is backing up here okay he's not going to be here on the snap all right okay you see how you see how far he got back okay you see how far he got back because he's playing with fire now he's playing with fire all right so that's just what I showed you now this is the same play GF I really believe should have waited on this one okay because if we see golf has a rather clean pocket right so I feel like he should have waited for J Mo to clear all right uh and and I think that that would have had an opportunity but of course what happened on that play is that it just kind of fell incomplete In The End Zone if you remember that play all right let's see um now this is that play this is the last play that I want to show you this is the play of the game this is the situation Richard davius white was on the sidelines looking up and praying asking God what is it that I have to do please give me some guidance just let me know Lord what do I have to do if I had man coverage on this man okay and he realized that I'm going tell you exactly when he realized that okay he realized that right there at this moment he real realized he had messed up at that moment he realized that was it that was it any cornerback that finds himself in this situation I would say 99% of the quarterbacks in the league to find themselves in this situation even with James and Williams as they are trying to turn and run most of them will end up like this most of them will end up like this so I hope I did a good enough job kind of displaying to you some of the things that we can do with j and and some of the things that I believe that we will do with J going through the season uh I definitely believe that Goff should be paying attention to the alignments and it I don't care what the route is if J has man coverage if the safety is not in the right position if the safety is too far inside they need to check to a go route and and let that happen and let that develop uh it doesn't have to be every single time but the more that you do it um the more that you open up the middle of the field because I'm and R st Brown and Sam La pora weren't eating in the middle of the field like they usually do um and obviously we won and Jameson Williams had his first 100 plus yard game and that's all that mattered right but going forward as Ben Johnson and Dan Campbell and jerk go look at the tape they will evaluate the things that they can do better um things that they can build off of things that they can set up we know that Ben Johnson likes to set things up three four weeks in advance so someone like the Seahawks could be seeing similar looks to this game yet they go and do something else off of it because Ben Johnson has the wherewithal to okay I understand what film is out there I understand we ran this play three four five times now the defense the defense is going to be looking for that okay this is that look we saw it on film they're going to do this and then Ben Johnson does something else off of it so guys let me know what you think um this is my first time kind of doing this live so um hopefully it'll get better hopefully we'll be able to get some video in I'm not sure I just want to make sure I'm just here so I don't get fined okay so I want to make sure that nothing gets flagged um or anything of that nature this is all 22 the you know the coach's film it hasn't aired on television there is no audio none of that stuff so it shouldn't get flagged uh but just to take precautions just using pictures this time and also I think a mixture of both right a mixture of both would help so okay well it's not a picture but it's a a freeze frame you know you can see what I'm seeing and then will'll let the tape run and things of this nature so yeah hope it was fun hope you enjoyed it as always you know
