“People Need To Go To Jail” Over Grenfell Tower Fire, Says Relative Of Victim

let's talk about another Scandal uh the greenfi uh Tower Inferno 72 people died when that Tower Block in West London went up in Flames at frightening speed in 2017 in the middle of the night uh and uh you know the number of people to blame uh are just endless uh the inquiry the 7year inquiry came to an end today uh and uh the catalog of failures of those responsible for the safy of people in that Tower uh just goes on and on and on right down to the fire brigade and not exactly uh cloting themselves in glory either so uh we need to talk about this now one of the uh more uh worrying aspects of all of this is after seven years there have still been you know there should be manslaughter charges here people the uh chairman of the inquiry uh you know he says oh you know the these people have been terribly terribly failed uh and has talked about the builders the uh local Council uh The Architects the people who put the cladding on everybody uh was found wanting all taking their share of the blame uh but who's been punished for this so far because of the inquiry no one not a single charge criminal charge against anyone uh just a sort of chairman of the inquiry said oh you're all really bad well the people who lost loved ones in that awful fire uh say that this has not brought them Justice this has denied them Justice delayed Justice only now Can the police start to get together a criminal file and start to work out who might deserve to be charged possibly with manslaughter uh and uh that might take until 202 then they may have to wait until 2028 for convictions if there are going to be any as well so that will be 11 years after the Blaze and why is it taken so long because of this damned inquiry uh well look Let's uh talk to uh one of the uh people who uh sadly lost a loved one uh he's the vice chair of the bereaved families and survivors group Greenfield United and his uncle Hashem Ramen died in the fire a warm welcome to Kareem MOS uh thank you for joining us Kareem thanks for having me on appreciate it uh well you you you got the thrust of what I was saying and now I mean I suppose it's good that finally we've got to the point where uh fingers of blame are being pointed at people who should have done their jobs better who should have uh secured the safety of the people who lived in gfel toown okay so now we've got some people in the frame if you like but seven years best part of 200 million quid in effect what it's done has meant that the police haven't been able to pursue anyone nobody's been charged and we're now hearing that if there are to be any convictions it might not be until 20128 uh and also there there's a Spectre of the idea that the com the charges that may be handed down will be Public Safety uh that kind of thing as opposed to what I think people like you calling for there should be manslaughter charges and they should be brought pretty damn quickly shouldn't they yeah I mean look I'm not I um I I I I pretty much agree with with everything you've said I think that seven years on and and having no accountability no charges it for me is ridiculous I you know the police will tell you they got football pitches worth of evidence and and all of this type of stuff I mean even with the public inquiry you know when when it was announced this was something that was just sort of thrown on right we're going to have a public inquiry we're going to get to the truth we're going to we didn't know what any of it meant it it it and and we obviously didn't have any influence on it and weren't sort of consulted on or anything like that but look the public inquiry I think has done some good stuff in terms of giving us the information of how we got to where we got to and as you said earlier you know this wasn't just the lfb or the corporations this was a failure across the whole board and I believe now that what we what we've learned and what we know yeah we shouldn't be waiting for 26 27 or even 28 for for criminal prosecutions surely you must have enough by now to go to go for these people um and and and and and it goes a little bit deeper than that you know we we're allowing these corporations to have Coy relationship with with uh with with the government I mean I don't know if you've seen this today literally as K stama was about to give his presentation about uh the report this whole flood of politicians just left the house of they just left they don't care there's no interest to them you know and this is the culture that we're up against this is what we're facing and it's just it's just m it's just it blows my mind how thing how corrupt and fraudulent uh uh uh these entities and these organizations and individuals behaved but yet no one's been charged and no one's no one's been held accountable I just want to tell a story I told it earlier I read a story in the stand of the London paper yesterday about a guy in he had seven of his relatives of his loved ones died uh in The Inferno and it's just such a tragic story and when they were found of these relatives three were kids and the adults the four adults uh were found they'd formed a kind of human tent around these kids on the basis that they were hoping that if they burned to death it would somehow save the kids I mean that is one story from what was going on in this Tower just to make sure that people understand just what a horror this was tell us a little bit about your uncle uh what what what um hasham what floor did he live on uh Karim lived on the top floor of of grand was he right at the top was he yeah he was right at the top um I remember visiting him when he first got it you know he liked being at the top because it brought him closer to God and I questioned Uncle especially someone who had mobility and disability issues he couldn't walk by himself why did they place you at the top they knew of your condition why were you now it's okay AK him I'm closer to God I'm happy I've got my place I can make it my own and uncle called four or five times on the night saying I'm in my flat I can't walk I can't get out by myself there's smoke everywhere don't worry we know where you are we're coming to get you and ultimately he was he lost his life in his flat and that's how that's how we found him so he F he called you when the tower was on fire no he didn't he didn't call me he called the fire brigades he spoke to the the people out there yeah let's talk about that I mean the fire brigade went round telling everybody your uncle included not to leave their homes I mean I mean I suppose you can understand that but in retrospect uh that was pretty fatal advice wasn't it it was yeah absolutely I mean you know stay put well they they changed their um their policy on stay's put uh halfway through or sort of I think two or three o'clock in the morning where they started telling people we can't get to you you need to get out run run for and and I think that was the last sort of conversation my uncle had with him and he was like but I I told you guys I can't leave I I can't I can't get out you know and and but I mean like you see the thing is like with with this situation it's just there's so many people to blame you know and we can we can talk about the firefighters and we can talk about the council and stuff like that but ultimately you know the government have known since 1991 the dangers of cladding fires these corporations like ionic kingspan and teletex system ically manipulated and lied about how safe their products was knowing the the the dangers of of them if they caught fire and still pushed not only continued to push uh but continue to do this in up until sort of 2020 so even when grand for happened the inquiry started they were still pushing for the dangerous materials um to to be all over all over high-rise buildings and this is an an issue like grenfall was no freak accident and I think this was this is probably the hardest part of today is knowing that Uncle Isam and all of the other family members we lost 18 kids 54 adults have could have been here with us today 18 you know today is the first day of school some of the kids had they have been alive would have been starting their new schools today and going back to school and they and they don't get to do that yeah exactly now uh just allow me to run through some of the uh conclusions of the uh inquiry chair so Martin moit I mean to be fair he didn't hold back he he slung it at them uh uh it's uh so he he said that unscrupulous manufacturers uh involved in renovations showed a systematic dishonesty uh they misled customers Architects he said demonstrated a Cavalier attitude to Fire and safety uh regulations uh the choice of combustible materials uh resulted from a series of Errors caused by incompetence of the organizations and individuals involved in the refurbishment uh the British board uh of agreement failed to carry out proper checks successive governments showed at times complacent and defensive attitudes uh the response from Theresa May and Kensington Chelsea Council was muddled slow indecisive and peace meal uh and Council and tenant management organization showed a persistent indifference to fire safety I mean it's shocking isn't it uh Kareem that such there should be such a catalog of appalling mistakes and you know the people that he's talking about you know I'm sure you're you're joining the chorus of course I mean they don't deserve to be just sort of maybe criticized for not being too good about fire and safety they should be in the dock they should be facing criminal charges shouldn't they 100% I totally agree with you there these people should not just be you know removed from their roles or fired from the company or establishment that they're part of these people these people need to be going to jail it's that simple like people died in the most public and horrific way and it's clear like the list goes on Kevin like as you've just been saying and I'm sure there's a lot more that you could be reading off that list of the failures individuals and I mean we could talk about it all day I I I agree with you like we shouldn't and even when it comes to sort of like local Authority the thing that windes me up the most is if they get slapped with a fine um whatever the number is it's ultimately us the taxpayer that pays for it so what you're telling me that we've paid for the deaths of our families you know it's it's just ridiculous we we have a system and I've said this before this this system it's not broken it's been built this way they built it specifically like this so that they Prosper people people die and they're able to get away with it do you know that I read somewhere today that um this is an article from 2021 since since grenfall kingspan arconic and sangoan have pocketed 4.9 billion not million billion in profits since the since the tire the fire at grfl and that was 2021 they've the system allows them to continue to prosper while we suffer trying to pick what does that company do kareim what do they actually do sorry say that again what does that company do that you just mentioned what uh so aronica is the company that manufactured the clading the clading company right yeah so so but this is a mix of not just the cladding company you have ionic which did the cladic cladding kingspan and celotex and saying goodby did the insulation now there's I could talk to you all day about these guys kingspan since 2005 up until 2020 knowingly sold and marketed a dangerous product and continued to do so after grandf ionic didn't even send people to the public inquiry to answer questions they have no interest in public safety here in the UK but are happy to pocket the profits every single day K stama today said in in Parliament that he's going to be removing them from any procurement work here in the UK okay that's good to hear but we should go further than that some of these organizations are on advisory boards advising our government and World governments about building safer and Greener homes you got to be joking let me ask you this kareim uh this is something I thought was really strange uh obviously your focus is on greenell but after greenfell there was this great natural human cry saying oh my God we've got all these other sky scrapers all these other tower blocks that people are living in all over the country country we've got to get that cladding off and we've got to get it off now and there was this frenzy of removal I live quite near prim's Hill there's four big uh tower blocks there they took the cladding down there double quick uh and so on and so forth uh but they then they stopped they just took the cladding off some tower blocks and apparently there are more than half a million people still living in tower blocks with exactly the same type of cladding that proved to be a death trap at gemfield but that's Madness isn't it it's crazy but not only that I'll tell you something that's even worse than that is that they're being asked to pay the bill to remove the cladin so imagine you've been then forked with a bill for 250 some of which are even 700 Cades after you've put everything into you know getting yourself a home and start a family whatever it is people have lost their livelihood people have taken their lives because of the situation they've been put in and you got to ask yourself why have we let this happen why has it got to this maybe because of the lobbying that these corporations have been able to have and the Ki relationships that they have with government they've been filling their pockets for decades and now that's the problem where when they're coming asking them to pay the bill to get the cladding off and remove these dangerous materials they're telling well we've paid you handsomely you've got to take care of it and nobody wants to Fork it well Kareem I just you haven't got Justice yet and let's hope that the police get their act together and uh they get some people in the dock quickly because people should pay for this uh you've been denied justice as that you know what they say justice delayed is justce is denied and you haven't got it yet uh and I want to say also I'm very sorry for your loss and thank you very much for for joining us and come on again soon eh uh that was uh Kareem mile I mean he's the vice chair of the bed family and survivors group they're called Grell United I think you uh can work out exactly uh what he was saying there I mean it really is a scandal isn't it let me know what you think for
