S5 W10 Lions vs Redskins

we are just the Shadows starting to get a bit longer week 10 of the NFL season is here and we're underway on EA Sports this will be fielded at the six and not a bad return here he gets it out to the 25 yd line so here are the Lions now coming out for their opening drive and a glance here at the man calling the plays under Center there 6-4 quarterback [Applause] we they'll come out throwing here to start the drive finding his safety valve here that's complete and he gets this up just shy of the 30 to the 29 before he's out of bounds and this o line it is the lifeblood of the offense they establish the tone mean nasty physical they can't wait to get after people that allows the rest of the offense to feel confident completed pass play now let's see if they go back to the air or to the ground they're going to look to throw and the Redskins do get to him he goes down for a sack week ago they dominated in the trenches they got in the back field for five sacks setting the tone there of opening drive and it sets a tone for the opposing team doesn't it remember when you were a kid you went to the theater and saw that horror movie and it stuck with you for a while and you were a little bit jumpy but if you saw five sacks the previous week and you're the quarterback he might be a little jumpy as well might throw off his timing yeah be jumpy but sorry Bob and Linda wouldn't let me see a PG movie until I was 17 well that's just good parenting and this opening drive not going to plan this is now third and 13 and they can't get the long connection as it falls incomplete looked like he had his hands on it for a moment but let's face it that was going to be a tough catch all the way because of the presence of the defense right there as he was trying to haul it in yeah nice job to force the incompletion here comes the Lions p now he'll kick it away after a three and out on the opening drive of the game that's going to go in the books as a 55 yd punt well done and it'll be Redskins football now with a first and 10 so out comes the Redskins offense now onto the field and out will come the leader of this offense and that of course is their signal [Applause] calling on first down he'll drop to throw and some room to maneuver and they're able to get this one across the 35 give him 11 yards that time and a new set of downs [Music] [Applause] now the offense lining up first and 10 they'll run it now out of the gun and he'll get this up to about the 38 yd Line Credit him with a one yd gain there to make it second and nine and the big boys up front in the trenches what do you think of the o line Charles I love them because this is a group that's so cohesive they know what the man next to them is going to do at all times and they operate as a terrific unit second down following the [Applause] Run going to give this time to the tail back trying to find Lane but instead he'll get back to the line of scrimmage and no more officially no gain on the play and they're left with a third and eight and the big meet on the D line we'll see how they do today and I'd hate to be an offensive lineman having to deal with these guys they come in hungry mean and confident they think that no one can block them and the Lions going with an extra DB here on third down here we go they'll look to throw nowhere to escape and he goes down they were able to win last week despite him being sacked four times they might need to tighten the reins a little bit or this one may not end in another Victory you're right about that they can't count on just winning the game no matter what happens they can't let the accumulation of hits and harassment in the pocket get to their quarterback got to stop that give him clean Lanes to throw the football in order to have a better chance to win again this week the Redskins send out their punter as he's on to punt for the first time [Applause] tonight that'll be put in the books as a 53 yd Punt and the lions will take over and Detroit getting set to go now and you know certainly a lot of football left to be played we're not into December yet but right now where we stand they're first place in their division looking good looking to be a threat come January and let's think about what every team has in their goals all right number one goal is what make the playoffs number two goal is win your division number three goal and the biggest goal I think is to be the highest seed possible that you can be heading into the playoffs so you can have as many home games as possible to try and get you to the Super Bowl and right now fighting for everyone possible to try at least secure home field for the Wild Card Andor divisional round such a solid defensive effort a week ago and they'll be looking to carry that forward into this one and confidence grows every time you have a great performance you think the next one's going to be even better that's where this defense is today we and some space here takes this to the 27 give him four yards [Applause] baby and this defense looks for one more stop here on third after the run and he will have a first down as they get him to the ground at the 37 it's a 10yd pick up but it moves the chains [Applause] they'll look to throw now on first down throwing the slant pattern here complete and able to get this one across the 45 before he's brought down it's another 10 yds on that one and another first down and boy they had high praise for this rookie receiver when we asked the coaches about him didn't they they certainly did and obviously they liked his measurables otherwise they wouldn't have brought him on to the team height weight speed all of that but how about what they really said competitiveness that's what they really liked about him the way he goes after the football competes for it and decides when it's in the air it's his and only [Applause] his firing quickly here and that's complete 15 more there and they're on a roll it's another first first down [Music] [Applause] they'll run it now out of the gun and the play goes nowhere losing yardage back near the 40 at the 39 that's going to go as a loss of a yard and it'll be second down so the Lions go backwards there and unfortunately that's something they saw a lot in 2015 they had the fewest rushing yards of any team in the NFL as one of those dubious titles that no one really wants to claim even teams who say well I don't worry about running it cuz we throw it all the time being able to run it when you want to is a key to success in the NFL and Detroit struggled doing that they run a draw here on second down and he'll take this one down to the 36 give him three yds on the run there that still leaves him with a difficult third and eight coming up seventh play of the drive fourth coming on Third and eight Go 39 a quick throw here that's complete the completion there winds up a wash and it'll bring up fourth down that goes into the category of a play that the defense is going to cherish and excites him a completion you give up the pass but no gain I mean that's exactly what you want on defense and sets up the fourth down and this will depend on the spot as it sails out of bounds and they'll say it's sailed out at the 10 yd line a look at Washington as they come onto the field and still a lot of football to be played in this season we're only in November a lot can happen between now and January but if it ended today they would just be on the outside of the playoff picture looking in so a lot to fight for yeah and wasn't it interesting in our meeting with with the coaching staff that they all made sure to let us know we know where we are right now but the playoffs don't start tomorrow we still got some time and they plan on putting it together formulating a streak get the whole month of December still left to play they think they can get in and they made it very obvious to us that there's no playoff talk in the locker room right now it's win this game and look to next week excellent Focus hurry up here we go oh he's got a man Wide Open complete 20 10 touchdown Washington a big play there an even 90 yards and the Redskins have taken a first quarter lead so from back deep deep in their home territory all the way into the end zone you think they expected to score on that one I'm not sure they expected to score but they also show that they're not averse to taking a little bit of a risk there right taking a chance because the normal call is take care of the football run it be safe instead they put it in the air and took a Gamble and it paid off in a big way that wasn't an analytics call that wasn't a fantasy guys call that was like a video game call right there it was a little bit of a video game call but it worked Dustin Hopkins on now to add the extra the point it's good and the Redskins take a seven nothing lead set now to kick this one away and off it goes this is Tak it at the three and he'll get it up to about the 26 yd line just across the 25 and Detroit getting set to go now and this is their third drive maybe the Focus right now not so much on points but getting their first first down and when you start off a game you don't even think that's an issue do you but you go a drive a second Drive no first down that becomes an issue now you got to think about okay what type of play calling do I have to do to get us in a spot to pick that first one up on first down they'll run it on the draw play and he Powers his way up past the 30 calling a game to four on First and that'll make it second down well they certainly got dented with that first down run so now they've got to be back on their heels a little bit as a [Applause] defense they run a draw here on second down and tough going there as he'll only get it up to about the 31 just a gain of a yard there and now it'll be third down the Lions on third down just one for three thus far this will be third and five throwing for his running back and he's got him complete a gain of four on the play and that's going to make it fourth down so many times you hear today's NFL described as a space game get your best players into space with the football in their hands that's why sometimes just swing it out to your Runner get him out in the flat and let him have a chance to make people miss an open field here comes the Lions punter now as he'll come on to kick this one [Applause] away and he's getting a workout here in this first quarter as he gets it away and that hits at the six and Carries into the end zone for a [Applause] Touchback they'll come up now with a clock showing three seconds to go here in the first we 39 here's a play fake as they set up to throw and that will be incomplete they couldn't hook it up on what's going to be the final play of this first quarter so we played one quarter here on a Monday night 7 nothing is our score we'll head back to FedEx Field after this [Music] timeout back live Charles Davis to my right I'm Brandon Garden it's football to begin quarter number two they've got it second and 10 to start things out right right now let's go green 39 green 39 and they'll give it here to his running back and able to break one tackle but then quickly brought down but a nice little gain second down a little more productive than first seven yds on the gain it gets him to Third and three now here we go they'll drop to throw and the Lions pressure too strong down he goes and I guess partner you call that a coverage sack oh without a doubt because where did he have to go with the football I know everybody wants to get on him about hey get rid of the football you had too much time in the pocket but he's scanning the field nowhere to go and that allowed the pressure to ultimately get to him the Redskins send out their putter on for his second punt he'd take a repeat of his [Applause] first and this is away it's a high kick and he got all of it this is taken around the 12 they'll call that a 61 yd punt he got all of that one and possession will switch hands first and 10 a look at the running back the man out of the back field as he gears up to go again they haven't been able to get him on track they haven't been able to get this offense on track no points so far maybe it's time to start doing a few different things throwing the ball a little bit maybe featuring other people touching it for a while and then you got a chance to come back to him when things have changed a little bit they have to make an adjustment still time for him here as we sit in the second quarter looking for his running back and he's got him it's a Los of a yard there and now second down a pass for negative yardage obviously no good maybe he shouldn't have thrown it or maybe he shouldn't have caught it I think we were seeing it at the same time weren't we maybe you let that one go right because you can see the Lost yardage about to develop but that goes against every Instinct of a receiver they're taught to catch everything so it's really hard to be mad at him and yell at him for trying to make that play We green 39 from the shotgun he'll look to throw and he's taken down back at his own seven well it was second long now it's third and even longer they're going in the wrong direction here cuz they're moving exactly the way they want to but you're exactly right definitely going in the wrong direction for the offensive guys need something from deep in the bag of tricks here after first and second down went backwards it's third and very [Applause] long back to throw and able to catch it on the left sideline but they're going to rule him out of bounds so it'll be incom complet certainly one they'd like to have back as it brings up fourth down an absolutely zero surprise that that one was incomplete huh I mean truthfully how many OC's have we seen with third and 20 on their play you can go oh I've got the exact play to dial up now that's just a head scratching down when you're facing a third and 20 tried to complete it couldn't get it done so possession goes over here on the punt and the offense will take over with a new set of downs getting set to go again as we look at the back heading on to the field again and the good news his team's winning the bad news he hasn't had the game that he's hoped to at least to this point here in the second quarter and a lot of that is pride because these types of backs want to be in the center of all the action and leading their team to Victory they'll take the win right now hoping to jump his game up as this one moves on he probably wants a little bit more of the spotlight going forward he's a rookie and you don't want to get hung up on the word potential but when you see him make catches like that you keep thinking to your no escaping this time as he'll go down they got him for a [Applause] sack and no matter what the situation the o line just hates that because they feel like they didn't protect little brother back there right yeah and that's just so difficult for them because just think about every single play when you decide to throw the football you're dealing with some of the best athletes on the planet you talk about guys that they weren't playing football they'd be starring in the NBA at power forward it's really difficult task here we go [Applause] now they run a draw here on second down and he's going to take this one up only to about the 44 yd line and they only get a yard back there they'll be left with a third down and long after watching that play and result I go back to when we sat with the offensive coordinator Brandon before the game and said how are you going to move the ball running it against the number one defense he gave us no indication didn't tip his hand at all so we have to see how this unfolds as this game moves along everything about that play tells you about today's NFL offenses and what they're asking out of running backs you can't just be a guy who can run the football you have to be able to catch it as well and he didn't get that done on that play the Redskins send out their putter as he's on here to putt it [Applause] away he steps into this one and this is a rocket and that'll hit in the end zone too much leg there that'll be a Touchback so here come the Lions now now if you're a fan of punting and I know that not many people are but this game kind of turning into one for you well it's okay if it's a skills contest right we're really into it then but not during the course of an actual game this has turned into a field position game though sometimes a better punter may actually determine the outcome now a handoff here to his running back looking for a cut back Lane but nothing there as he's met at the line of scrimmage officially no gain on the play and it's second down so nothing there but maybe you blame that on the blocking yeah some point you've got a win at the point of attack and on that play that was all the defense they made it [Applause] happen now he'll look to throw here on second and 10 Roberts with it over the middle six yds is the pickup and that'll lead to a third down the Lions on third down just one for five to this point this is third and [Applause] four 39 back to throw here and this is going to be incomplete defending an out route is awfully difficult because the best receivers try and sell an inside move before they break to the out and you have to respect that as a defensive guy because if you you let them when they say cross your face or get across you in the middle of the field usually you're beaten on a route and that's an easier throw for the quarterback so you ordinarily take a step over to make sure you seal that off in this case he was able to not only do that but react back to the sideline and B the ball down here comes the field General leading his offense back out there for the next possession and maybe he's starting to wave the White Flag a little bit he's playing pretty well but the pressure it's got to him has to find a way to step around it step through it or just handle it because as you mentioned he's having a pretty good day overall just the hits keep coming and taking those sacks that's not the way that they want to finish a ball game with their quarterback on the ground so much he'd like to stay upright when he's been upright he's been pretty good and seeing no options he just tosses this one away incomplete now that'll bring up second down so incomplete on first let's see what second down has in store [Applause] right here we go they'll set up to throw he's going to flip one out here to his running back and they'll take him down at the 31 yd line it's a gain of five on the play and that's going to bring up a third down I know it was a gain but you have to sense probably a little bit of disappointment there because when it's out there an open space I think they expect to get more out of a play don't you especially when you're getting it to your guy out of the Back Field you're expecting him to be able to create something be a little more Shifty yeah no doubt about it good open field tackling held it to an okay game the Redskins on third down oh for three to this point they could use a conversion this will be third and five got his man complete over the middle that's Roth and he's got the first before he's brought down at the 39 yd line eight yds on the pickup there and it moves the sticks and Brandon from our time in college football where receivers weren't running the traditional NFL route TR one thing they did learn find open areas find soft spots and set up and catch the ball and I think we just saw that there yeah we saw that indeed picking up the first Lacy hit he lost the football it's out and this is scooped up by the Lions and his guys are going to take over at the 39 yd line with no running backs in the back field to help pass protect all the receivers in their patterns is going to be hot routes if they sense a blitz or pressure on the quarterback they've got to be prepared to break routes off early and get the football in this case ah never even had a chance they po the ball free in the back field now the Lions offense they get ready to head back out there and right now these guys they're shuffling a little bit maybe doubting because three straight drives have ended with the football away yeah so you start pointing fingers at each other a little bit asking a lot of questions what are you seeing what are you getting maybe trying to narrow down your playbook a little bit and maybe get simpler rather than more complex in order to try and fashion together a drive and this one's going to go the wrong way losing yardage back at the 42 wow that play got shut down in a hurry as soon as the snap came you can see defensively they were just closing in that was going nowhere yeah you count on your offensive line to give you a little bit of space a little bit of time so you can make a move there was none there for him under four to go now as the clock runs and they come up on second [Applause] down going to give this time to the tail back and very little there he might have gotten a yard yeah I think he got a yard to the 41 and Counting the defense here the Redskins have six defensive backs out [Applause] there he can't avoid the pressure Redskins get there I'm starting to feel for that quarterback back there I mean you know me normally don't have a lot of empathy for the QB right in this case definit he's been on constant dur entire game I don't know how he surviv him back there and to think there's still a long way to go in this football game here comes the Lions punter now as he'll come on to kick for a six time [Applause] tonight he's averaging just under 50 yds a pun as gets this away and this is going to hit the goal line and continue on into the end zone for a Touchback there he is the man taking the snaps under Center heading out for the next possession he's played a pretty clean first half a touchdown no interceptions frankly that's what they expect out of it they want to see the ball thrown and thrown well and he's able to do that and put it in the end zone they'd love to see more of that before this game finishes but right now he's got his team in a good spot a good spot be looking for touchdown pass number two here in the second quarter and he's going to get this one across the 30 yd line that one goes for 13 yds and it moves the sticks so here we go first and 10 now two minutes to play here in the first half chains I know exactly what's going to be said about that play from the defensive perspective what's that that's why I tell all you guys we need more than one tackler to the ball he broke the first tackle luckily enough there were more people there to get him down hurry up here we go Blue Landing [Applause] they'll look to throw here it's a short one here complete to his tight end and he'll get up near the 45 they'll spot it at the 44 go green 39 green 39 throwing over the middle but it's incomplete the Redskins on third down they've only converted once in four tries this is third and nine finding his safety valve here that's complete and he'll be brought down at the 48 yd line it's an 8yd pickup and it'll be fourth down a short gain that doesn't get him the first down brings up a fourth down situation really nice job defensively they knew where the sticks were they got the stop before it and this one will not be returnable as it sails out of bounds and Detroit getting set to go now and the ball backed way up so thinking with this amount of time on the clock probably just sit on it and we'll see these two teams go to the lockers yeah I don't think you want to overthink it in this situation either side of the ball just go ahead and finish up the half and get on out and talk about it and he'll give it here to his running back and he'll be taken down at the 18 eight yds on the pickup and now they'll have some options on second and short even though they gave up more than they wanted to on that play it actually illustrates how well they bottled him up throughout the game because that was his longest run of this contest so we've reached halftime here in DC in our nation's capital with a home team the Redskins on top as we'll send you down the coast to Orlando where we check in with our friend Larry Ridley and the EA Sports halime report Larry all right here we go let's take a look at some of the highlights from the first half now third and eight defense will win the battle and get the sack this will go as a loss of 10 took the ball end of the first wide open Catch will be made on the Deep pass Eon as he Sprints to the The End Zone as they take a seven nothing lead now following the fumble defense will get to the QB here this ends up as a huge loss in yardage so that's it for us we'll go back now under the lights for the second half of this Monday night matchup this will be taken in at the one and not a bad return here he gets it out to the 25 yd [Applause] line and here come the Redskins now they have the lead now they'll be looking to extend that lead and this is where I enjoy talking about one of my favorite subjects tendency Breakers or counters as I also like to call them you've done things in a certain way in the first half and they've had ability to see what you've done they're going to make their adjustments so guess what you adjust yourself and try and stay ahead of the pace cuz you are looking for some separation in this ball game the adjustment to the adjustment without a doubt show him one thing hit him with something else they run a draw here on second down and not a whole lot doing there as he'll get it up to about the 28 yd line it's a gain of about three but it's going to leave him with third and still seven yds to go you know that old expression it's not my night it has hasn't been his so far I don't know if the legs are a little bit heavy sometimes having to hang out all day and play doesn't exactly play to your advantage but it's been a tough go for him every time he looks up somebody's there defensively that was the same case on that play and he couldn't hang on to it through the contact incomplete that's a first down if he holds on but you saw the contact able to jar it free from him and force a fourth down great play defensively there as you said just to knock it free cuz if he had caught that that pass the sticks first down the Redskins send out their putter he's been terrific so [Applause] far he gets this one away and boy it's another [Applause] Boomer 47 yd punt a return of four and out will come the offense as they take over so we get to look at the Lions offense as they get ready for their first possession of the second half they were able to get the stopped defensively now a chance really to set the tone here in quarter three they can really take charge can't they and this is probably how it was drawn up at the half I think we can go inside locker room right and I think we would see up on the grease boards stop them defensively get the ball back from the offense and let's go down field and score seems simple right the last part we have to find out if that's going to happen but the first part worked the Perfection did exactly what they wanted and now their offense has to pay it off see if they can get the ladder 50% [Applause] they'll run it now out of the gun and this has been a recurring theme tonight for sure nowhere to run back to the line of scrimmage that's all no gain that time and it leaves him with third and 11 coming up the Lions on third down it's been a problem just one for seven thus far this is third and 11 for his running back and he's got him complete and they'll take him down at the 31 yd line give him six on the play and that'll bring up fourth down here comes the Lions pter now as he's on to kick it away and no one there to stop it hits at the eight but it carries all the way into the end zone for a Touchback the Redskins offense now they get set to take over here and they're coming off a three and out my friend I think they've got to look at that play sheet and go to a spot that they haven't gone before time to shake things up a little bit to try and get this offense moving okay so how do you do that how do you shake things up you look at what youve called before realize it hasn't work something else and maybe you try and find one of those special plays for one of your better players and maybe try and hit something big and get things going in the excitement area 10 y on the pick up there and it'll be second down nothing clashy there the slant to the slot oh the frustration for the defensive guys cuz it's a quick play and you know it's going to be a bang bang play in terms of the throw in the catch and then he's able to absorb the contact and complete it and on the outside they're playing press [Applause] coverage quick hitter here it's complete they get six on the pick up there as the Drive will [Applause] continue they'll look to throw here on first down over the middle complete it's rth and able to get this one across the 45 before he's brought down a nice pick up there of 11 yds and it'll move the sticks he'll look to throw firing quickly here and that's complete five yds on the catch there brings up second [Applause] down Green 39 looking to throw he's going to flip one out here to his running back four yds on the pickup and that's going to make it third down and less than a yard the offense on third down tonight they've had their troubles just one for six they're looking at third and a few [Applause] inches now a hand off here to his running back and he will have first down yardage as he's brought down at the 41 only three there on the pickup but that's enough to move the chains I know the game's changed a lot of people would say it's evolved look I'm a little bit in the andth thought okay I love this exotic formations no misdirection just line up and run the D ball pick up the first down I love it yeah third and short that's what you're supposed to do like you said old school Smashmouth football they go play action here on first down he's got his man on the crossing route and he gets this one all the way down inside the 20 yd line a nice gain of 21 yds offense walks to the line for play number seven of the drive they'll run it now out of the gun and he'll get this down only to the 18 just a yard on the pickup there and it'll bring up a second and nine well they certainly had success throwing the ball on this drive and not as much running it as we just saw once again on that last play stopped after a very short game but I wouldn't abandon the Run totally because otherwise pass rushers just tee off on the quarterback makes it very very difficult for him in that situation and he'll get this down out only to the 18 back to- back one yd runs here so that leaves him with a third down and eight and as we've seen throughout this season it's no picnic trying to score touchdowns against this unit they're ranked number one against the run but it's also difficult because it's not easy to throw the ball against him either on third down he'll drop to throw and probably the wise decision there no one open he just throws it away and that keeps the field goal on the table as it's Fourth Down down well that was excellent coverage right there and he definitely did the right thing showing that discretion is definitely the better part of valor threw it away preserve the opportunity to kick for a field goal and excellent coverage and right now the human is controlling the defense so good job human and Hopkins kick is good and the lead moves to 10 Zim so the drive stalls out but they are able to put three points on the board yeah just a yard or two shorter than an extra point but no problems converting there [Applause] the kickoff unit is out on the field and they will send this one away this is taken at his four oh he's got some breathing room and it'll be a terrific return here as he gets it down all the way inside the 30 it's a third quarter and they're down on the scoreboard no one wants to hit the panic button just yet points are a necessity on this drive what a great way to get set up and they'll start this drive with very good field position they'll run it now out of the gun and this has been a recurring theme tonight for sure nowhere to run back to the line of scrimmage that's all now I think we're going to get a timeout here yes timeout here as it looks like we've got a lion that's shaken up while the training staff takes a peak we'll take a break offense looking to avoid a third and long it's second and 10 here we go and that is caught touchdown [Applause] Detroit and he's a little bit on the shorter side as a receiver maybe sometimes for the defense tough to find the little guys right yeah sometimes they get lost in the traffic but usually what it means is that rather than just winning with height or even speed they use their quickness to find a way to get open well tall short wide skinny whatever there it results in a touchdown Now Matt Prader for the point after [Applause] and they're back within a field goal it's 107 now they had the short field and they made quick work of it just two plays to get into the end zone out is the kickoff unit as they run up and send this one away fielded about a yard deep and he'll be brought down at the 23 make it the 24 yd [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] line green 39 they'll try and start this drive in the air and he's got roome and they're able to get this one across the 35 12 yds there as they move the chains all right here we go green 39 and to give this time to the tail back and unable to get downhill there as he'll take this up to about the 37 just a yard on the first down carry so it's second and nine when the 43 defense is functioning really well you know who stays what we call clean and no one gets to him the guy playing the middle linebacker position the guy we call Mike that means the defensive front is eating up all the blocks and just let him go to the football and make a play and hard running is going to get him over the 40 to the 42 call it a gain of five that time and they'll be left with a third and about four the Redskins on third down they've struggled to the tune of two for eight so far this is third and [Applause] four and he's unable to haul it in so it falls incomplete over the middle third of the field and that brings up fourth I wonder Brandon I just wonder you think maybe he was worried about where he was on the field was he far enough was he close enough to the first down sticks absolutely he was right there by him and I think he was thinking first down before he caught that football yeah got to catch it first because if you don't catch it there's no chance of picking up a extra man in the secondary here on third green 39 39 and incomplete the contact made the ball roam free and brings up fourth down here comes the Lions punter now as he'll come on to kick this one away 46 yds on the boot the coverage holds him to just three on the return and it'll be Redskins football now with a first and 10 now here's the signal caller getting ready to lead this offense again and the passing game I mean look at the numbers it's falling off when a team is struggling sometimes you look at a quarterback when the quarterback starts to struggle who goes over and picks him up yeah that's always a big one isn't it usually there's a quarterback Whisperer somewhere and what I mean by that is whether it's an assistant coach whether it's one of his best friends on the team someone that can get in his ear get with him and say all right man what do you need what's going on here there always one person he can lean on he have to lean on that guy right now so how do you beat man coverage first of all you want to be a superior receiver but you know something that guy is covering you he's usually pretty good too so the corner route is usually a great spot to get it done from the Midfield strike they'll look to throw he's going to flip one out here to his running back and he's going to be out of bounds but able to take it inside the 40 yd line they give him 13 yds there on the play and a fresh set of downs back to throw now on first down and no escaping this time as he'll go down they got him for a sack the amount of sacks that they've absorbed in this game is absolutely extraordinary let's just face it this offensive line flat out cannot handle this pass rush it's been demonstrated time and time again they'll run it now out of the gun and he'll get three down to the 34 yd line the Redskins on third down not so hot two for n to this point this is third and eight up here we go 39 and that is incomplete in the early days of the NFL you could easily blame these drops on maybe some uneven or uncertain Lighting in a stadium not anymore the lights are pretty good yeah they're great here at night but his second drop indeed not a good look and this will be out of Bounds at the what here the 12 yard line and Detroit getting set to go now he guys had to punt their last possession and that's become too familiar of a refrain too many of these drives just wound up going nowhere well you know how in baseball when the pitcher gets a base hit and he's on base they bring his jacket out to him to keep him warm a lot of times the punter goes to the Seline puts on sweatpants or a wrap over his leg to keep it warm he might need a massage from the trainer right now from all the work he's getting and he's got some space here and he'll be taken down but not it's complete and he's finally taken down but not before getting AC cross Midfield and across the 45 yd [Applause] line oh a ball batted in the air and now it's intercepted picked off at the 22 and he will return this one to the 30 yd Line This interception will go on the record of the quarterback but as a receiver you've got to understand where you are in the field middle portion you know it's going to come in hot Square your body to the quarterback and be ready to make the catch a look at Washington as they come onto the field they've got the lead last time had to punt it though what's the key to this drive I think it's leverage the big guys up front you know the motivational speech on the sideline is guys give us an opportunity protect the passer create space for our Runners and let's go ahead and get these guys low man wins let's go do it on this drive we'll watch that leverage on this drive and they get him down but not before he takes it across the 40 yd line it's a gain of 11 yds that time and it produces a new set of downs got a figure now after getting that turnover they're just going to be happy to keep the ball on the ground right this is where covering the football taking care of the ball all the ball security terms that have ever been used they come into play for the guys on offense right now just take care of it and they've got a good chance of ending up def they're okay with that short little route tackle them inbounds okay all right cliche alert it's time for someone to make a play cuz they've got have something the bigger down field they can't just take what they give them they've got to force it and make something big happen for them looking to jam the receivers at the line here press coverage look defensively we throws a quick hitter on the slant that's complete and he gets this inside the 35 yd line 15 more there and they're on a roll it's another first down these guys are running offense like you drive the pedal is down stomp down how about that backto back completions they are rolling so much for being conservative and running that football and he'll work it inside the 30 to the 29 yd line give him three on the play and that'll make it a second [Applause] down time is starting to run out really becoming a factor we'll see if the defense can get the stop they need to get the ball back to the offense we they'll run it now out I'm thinking I've got to be careful with that well it's a two-score game you're inside of two minutes I think you can breathe relatively easily now yeah you can but still you got to stay vigilant can't give up anything cheap and easy that could put you in some Jeopardy still an important piece of business to take care of the extra point it's good to make it 177 the kickoff team on the field now as they will send this one away that'll be taken in The End Zone and he'll elect not to return this one so they'll bring it out to the 25 on the Touchback so out now come the Lions and there are parts of their last Drive they'd like to emulate of course they'd like to forget the ending the interception but they did put together Charles a nice sustained drive to get him down the field yeah and unfortunately for them the only thing that matters is part two right because once they threw the interception and finish off the drive that does him no good to go back and say well you know we had a good one going finish things that's the only way you can get it done and it pops free the Collision there Jarred the ball loose and brings up second [Applause] down and he fires one incomplete the sideline there good route good catch first down and he gets out of bound yeah you have to like the play calling because you have to run some guys down the middle of the field to draw some of the Defenders away they can't just let them guard the sideline exclusively that's how it's going to work Sidelines and incompletions to use the [Applause] clock the prev play is under r all right here we [Applause] goal and this is caught now for a late touchdown so hold everything here this one's not over yet I'm not sure win-win is the proper term here but it certainly felt like it they got a touchdown they needed but if I'm on the defensive side of the ball okay you got the touchdown but it sure took you a long time yeah cuz offensively there you're probably hoping for a one to five play drive that one ate up a little more time than they were hoping you're exactly right and if you have that one to five play drive you actually build up momentum and even more hope when they had to slog their way down field they got the touchdown but it's almost like ah yeah you know feel right [Applause] exactly Prader on to add the extra [Applause] point and this is up and good to make it a 1714 game game so the drive goes 75 yds 10 plays and the end result a Detroit touchdown so still a small chance here with a little over 30 seconds to go but they're definitely going to need this one to bounce their way and this is going to be recovered by the hand seene and that should just about put a Capper on this one well fourth quarter they felt like they needed the football back unfortunately they couldn't get it and I know we brought analytics into the game and someone has said here that the data says that when a team's expecting an onside kick 80% of the time the team expecting it they do actually recover the ball which is what we saw here I just wonder if that number is much more of a anecdotal type of a number kind of like when the coaches tell us well when you score on special teams 93% of the time you win the game I'm still waiting to see that number as empirical the Redskins they can smell Victory now they take a knee now the defense will burn their third and final timeout and as the two teams talk it over on their respective Sidelines we take a [Applause] break down to a knee one more time and that should just about do [Applause] it the Redskins on third down they've had a lot of chances but not much success converting only three times this is going to be third and 13 and Charles I think when the schedule comes out all teams no matter where they're predicted to finish talk about protecting your home turf they were able to do that here in this one similar to a tennis match right not letting them break your serve that way you hold on to it they got it done and they feel very good about that Victory so for Washington the win gets him back over 500 at 5 and four on the year and they'll get to stay home again next week as the Seattle Seahawks come to town meanwhile for Detroit the loss will drop them to six and three now on the year and they'll try to rebound next week as they had two Glendale to take on on the [Music] Cardinals so that'll
