rosters do expand for all 30 Big League clubs with a calendar turning to September on Sunday the Red Sox do not seem likely and it doesn't seem like they're going to promote any of their top prospects so I'm not patting myself on the back but there were two things I was thinking about over the last 24 hours really since Thursday when I saw that schoolo was going to be pushed back an extra day he got six full days of rest for the Tigers and they had said in recent weeks that they were going to push him back and give him a little extra rest as well well he was terrific on Saturday but this is what I originally thought school starting in the series against the Red Sox maybe it could have been like Cor Burns a couple of weeks ago in Baltimore where they tag a potential Al sa Young Award winner got a run in the first inning that turned about turned out to be just that the other thought I had earlier in the day on Saturday was this the Red Sox have made some pitchers really since the All-Star break look like number one legit acees a pitching staffs you know some of the names but scoble is certainly the mix for the AL sa Young Award and he pitched like that on Saturday so the Red Sox have made four five starters in rotations look like one or twos and scoo is a legit Ace if you wanna if you want to go in the trade market this offseason I don't think the tigers are trading T scoble I think they try to approach his representation representatives and I don't know who they are I don't know if it's Scott Boris but I say hey we're trying to build something here you're our Ace because if the tigers are ever going to compete in the next couple of years what are they going to need to sort of get to that point they're going to need an ace you have one in the fold but his name the only reason I bring it up is his name was out there prior to the trade deadline scoble eight Innings Tyler O'Neal hadit a two-out home run of the first inning you thought okay get to him early get a run in the first pavetta scoreless bottom the first inning and then Schoo just settled in after that seven scoreless after giving up the home run to Tyler O'Neal in the first inning and Tyler O'Neal now has 25 home runs and 50 runs batted in on the season a healthier Tyler O'Neal missed a lot of time in August Miss time early stages of the regular season and even a more consistent Tyler O'Neal and you're talking about a guy with more than 30 home runs and more than 75 RB 25 home runs 50 runs banded in that RBI total seems a little low but as expected and as I touched on in the open Nick pavetta deserved a victory on Saturday night didn't get it we are scoreboard watching and this might be a real loss night this this may turn out a frustrating loss for the Red Sox it may turn even more frustrating last check Blue Jays seven runs in the first inning against the Twins and led seven nothing after a half inning check again because we are scoreboard watching 11 nothing that game is in the fifth inning so it could have been two and a half for the Red Sox and a frustrating Saturday night for the Red Sox is going to be even more frustrating when that game goes final because it could have been two and a half can't give them up I again I know you're facing an ace but one run over eight innings O'Neal runs into one in the first nothing really after that at bat of the night is a tough one but I have one for you give you that in the second segment but the Red Sox just not a whole heck of a lot going on rafy Des um he's got to get going and it's not just on Des it's not and yes facing a tough left-hander on Saturday but Des 0 for five and returning in the lineup on Friday after missing three games 0 for four and an opportunity in the ninth inning O'Neal extended the game against Holton who picked up the save he walked with two outs de's at the plate can he run into one didn't happen ground ball up the middle they got the force out at second ball game over two hours and two minutes two hours and two minutes School B terrific as expected really and the ace got him yes but Nick pavetta was solid he gave up two runs in the second gave up three straight base hits ball misplayed in the Outfield and left field by Rob ref Snider he makes the catch the runner scores it's a one-1 ball game but instead two run score on the ball off the bat of uh Trey Sweeny it's a two- one ball game at that point in time not only does ref Snider not make the catch raphaela takes a throw doesn't realize hey I've got a play at the plate they could have cut down that go-ahead run at the plate instead two- run score 2-1 turns out to be your final and first nesson reference and I think I said Dave O'Brien Kevin ukis on Friday I apologize correcting myself on the Saturday e lenux it was Will Middlebrooks for this weekend series I'm not sure who the analyst will be Monday Tuesday Wednesday New York for the Mets series but anyway they talked about it there was an error tonight the red sucks I think what three or four straight games without an error going into Saturday but there are plays that just weren't made but the revolving door that is the second base position for the Red Sox you're putting Gasper out there you're starting Conor Wong at second base yes he's had some Innings at second base but it's his first career start at the big league level at second base a revolving door at second again you've got soard to me SOG guard's in the lineup play him at second or third instead you put Romy Gonzalez at third base sogard should be in the lineup why not but again that's that's it's it's second guessing to a a certain degree and I I don't think that's it holds water it carries weight in this situation because it's a two- one ball game you don't second guess something like that but again put sogard in the lineup put him in there instead you you got Connor Wong and I understand Wong okay right-handed bad he can run into one he ran into one had a couple of base hits on Friday night but pavetta gave up the two runs in that inning went six weisser now it's a 2-1 ball game Weiser comes on for the seventh gives up two hits gets two outs Rich Hill another inning in a third and H another strikeout threw one pitch in that seventh inning and then got the runner caught off first base for the final out then worked to score this eighth inning and you're thinking a couple different things eighth inning ninth inning all right Peta is going to be done after six the bullpen has to hold it well the bullpen did hold it they kept it a one-run ball game but the bats could not come alive and scoble I've got his numbers I I mean he just he was terrific and with each inning that schoolo worked one two three fourth inning 70 pitches through six and at that point you're thinking he's going eight and he might go nine worked a one23 7th worked a one two three eth inning 98 pitches struck out raphaela for the final out in the eighth inning had a little emotion coming off the mound knowing that his night was probably over they weren't going to give him the ninth and he worked 3-12 three Innings after that I mean even in that first inning you give up a solo home run got the next batter no big deal but really there weren't a whole heck of a lot fifth inning Wong single casus hits into a double play Jansen struck out and again that's my thought was can you beat up scoble the way you got Burns a few weeks ago if you look at the competition for the Sai Young just look at two the two starts in the month of August for Burns and scoo burns roughed up ubble eight Innings of one-run baseball and his 16th win on the year Peta deserved better 5- 10 record now ra just over four and a half pavetta deserved better just like Tanner ha deserved a win on Friday and again win loss record all those different things I understand that ah you don't have to put any thought into the win loss record anymore ask a starting pitcher at the big league level if the win loss record is important it is and when you're five- 10 it looks ugly when you're five- 10 with an erra over four and a half it does look ugly hey if you're with us on the lock on Sports days it has to start tomorrow after a loss you have to win the series you have to leave Detroit on the plane Sunday night with a victory and taking the series you have to uh what else does Andrew the goat have they're in trouble yeah but again right now Blue Jays beat the Twins and that's the only team I'm looking at right now Minnesota and that number three wild card spot twins laying an egg tonight at home against the T against the Blue Jays giving up seven runs in the first inning again it's a lopsided ball game in the middle Innings as we scoreboard watch in segment number one of our latest lock on Red Sox postcast uh Luca come on bring bring back the 2018 lineup uh yeah luuka you might be right there Andrew the goat I don't I don't agree Andrew says his latest comment socks are not a good enough team this year for the playoffs I don't I don't agree with that I don't we started this in June we started this when they had the Phillies and the Yankees on the homand and they won two of three from Philadelphia when the Phillies at that point were playing terrific baseball and then they took two out of three from the Yankees this could be a playoff team but they're losing at the wrong time every team in baseball first place look where the Astros came from they haven't been in first place all season long the Orioles have scuffled over the last six weeks or so the Yankees went into a funk and have sort of rided their ship it's one of the worst stretches of the season for the Red Sox since the All-Star break but talent wise when you have a guy who's top three in consideration for the MVP and jiren Duran why why why can't you be a playoff team and the way it is now Andrew the goat again Red Sox really need more speed on offense well Andrew the go I think you bring up a great POS a great uh point there sixth inning Duran reaches with one out and Duran has really picked his spots to run and I thought and again you got a lefty on the mound so a little bit more difficult but if I'm the hitter at the plate I'm giving him an opportunity there to get into scoring position and run you can't steal for a space Duran was on tying run aboard in that sixth inning I thought give him an opportunity right here 32 stolen bases on the season let him run not a lot not a lot of attempts for jiren Durant in the second F that might be the possibility of saving his legs but right now in that situation that's where you run I think take a pitch or two let him see let him take the first pitch let him see if he can take off on school bow on Pitch number two of the IAT didn't happen and I thought hey okay he's on let's see if he runs here there are base dealers and there are base dealers true base dealers are taking off in that situation that's personal opinion I may not be right about it but that's how I feel and in that situation down a run against an ace you need to put something together will midbrook said it a against a guy like scoble and we're going long here in segment number one against a guy like scoble you've got to get to him early you get the one run on the two home run by O'Neal in the first inning then you understand you're not going to Bunch two and three and four hits together in an inning against a guy like scoo so when Durant reached in that sixth inning I thought run you got to try something you've got to make something work here make him throw you out I would have been you know okay got thrown out worth the risk would have been a tough one um at bat of the night that was a tough one for me Nick deserved better we've Bullpen should be sharp and it may be a full Bullpen day it was supposed to be Cooper chrisell we'll see if that happens and I say you give chriswell the opportunity 100% but this lineup right now you're looking at it Duran one for four ref Snider 0 for four O'Neal one for three with the Home Run also walked once struck out twice Red Sox again just four hits total two hits couple of nights ago against the Blue Jays de 0 for four hitless and nine of P it's missing three in a row Romy Gonzalez the magic seems to be out of his battle a little bit although he did have a base hit Wong a base hit bottom three in the lineup casus Jansen raphaela combining to go 0 for nine there is ever a time the Red Sox need a right-handed bat it's now Tyler O'Neal has to have a terrific month of September the bats have to wake up you need to get back into a stretch for this team where you're going to go out and win seven of eight seven of nine you win seven of nine over the LA next week plus and you're within a game and a half two games no more half game twins have played one less game right now on the schedule than the Red Sox have but you need to get there you need to be within a game or two at most when the twins come to town in September you absolutely have to be there scoble again terrific six days of rest tigers are now 19-8 in his starts this season and he is 16-4 and an erra right around two and a half first start of the Season against the Red Sox and you know I love lowc scoring the games two hours and two minutes you're back in Boston you're in New England tonight you're disappointed the Red Sox lost it's not even nine o'clock we're doing our lockdown Red Sox postcast you've got the entire night in front of you and yeah you're going to Stew a little bit later on when the Blue Jays and twins go final and it should be two and a half right now you're going to Stew but you'll get over it but wow lost opportunity but I'm thinking right now you know the The rosters do expand they don't expand the way they used to you could bring anyone up on the 40 man roster some teams would have you know full dugouts 38 39 guys you'd have pinch Runners you've had you'd have nine 10 pitchers in a game you had all sorts of options now in the last CBA they agreed to position player and you can expand the roster with a position player and a reliever there were reports on Saturday Saturday that Emmanuel Valdez was on his way to Detroit to join the team for Sunday I've said it and the guy for me and I think the guy for everybody figure it out and get Christian Campbell to the big leaks do it do it I want to say he's deserving I think it's better to say he's deserving of an opportunity why not find out let him come up let him be brighte eyed and ready to go and it's the big leagues put him there at second base every day for a week and see what he does maybe he provides a huge spark for you what's it going to hurt you start his clock so what he's going to be in the big leagues next year anyway bring them up and say what's it going to hurt right-handed bat shows the power right now at the Triple A level with woster bring them up the other guys I can understand but this is a guy who's got experience on his side bring him up that should be the guy right now you don't want to bring Kyle teal up okay that's fine but you're going to go all September and leave Campbell a AAA this isn't this isn't like the days when I was in minor league baseball there wasn't a video you're chronicling you're getting accounts of what Christian Campbell is doing and the prospects that are now double A and triaa for the Red Sox and these guys are close but bring Campbell up you're driving a fan base absolutely crazy as they watches at bats on milb.tv or whatever they're calling it these days but those games are streaming you're seeing him with the power just up from double A and hitting why waste those home runs let him run into a couple he may strike out a lot but he may run into one every once in a while and you might provide a big base hit in a situation but you're going to let him sit at Triple A for the rest of 2024 when you need offense when you need a right-handed bat let him be that guy see if it works can it really be any worse than what you're running out there right now and what you've been running out there over the course of this entire season these guys have you in the situation where you could play October baseball and oh what does it matter they're a wild card they'll be out in the first round no these are still young guys casus Durant give them some at bats in a playoff series that way if you're competing next October in 2025 they've got some aats and I do believe in that experience get them some aats in October this year I'd bring Campbell up and and Manuel Valdez we know what he is we know what he is there's there's no surprises can you make an argument that n Manuel Valdez is going to come up to the big league level and go on a tear over a 7 to 10 day period I'd put my money on Christian Campbell doing that over and and Manuel Valdez or anyone else I would I haven't clamored for it out loud but I'd bring dob back up and if you had the ability to bring five six guys up maybe he does get an opportunity but there's a guy's got some Pap but yeah then again he's going to strike out in a big situation too that's never right it itself so you expand by two hey I like the old days I liked when guys were able to come up from the minors from double A from single a if they were on the 40 man and you know teams would put them on the active roster you could you could have your entire 40-man roster some teams it would be 38 guys active on any given night compared to 28 29 on the other side they change it with the CBA maybe they change it again in the future I think Tom Karen and maybe it was Lenny dinardo in studio prior to the game on the Ness and pregame show talking about it maybe the number in the future Peter Abraham was on there he was the guest from Detroit and they were talking you know this doesn't get done until the next CBA but maybe the number is 30 give those guys the opportunity to come up be around it and Campbell to me right now what's the difference if he hits 325 with more home runs in September at Triple A if he comes up to the big league level and hits you a couple maybe maybe in big spots I'd give him the opportunity I really would because you're running you know just like the bullpen for weeks and weeks and weeks you're running the same guys out there now you're just running the same guys out there in the lineup game in game out and just over the last couple of games you know Gasper's sitting there so you can put Jansen and Wong in the lineup together I I I don't think that's the answer as well you need you need more trusted bats that could possibly come off Off the Bench or even in the starting lineup as well numbers of the night look ahead to the pitch put on your radar uh Again The rosters do expect on Sunday one position player one pitcher and muel Valdez I touched on it in segment number two reportedly on his way to Detroit cam Boozer on the injured list since mid August um Pitch Thursday did not really respond well dealing with elbow inflammation looks like he'll have at least one more appearance on his rehab assignment they'll see how he rebounds after that and uh could be active during the Met series or perhaps on the upcoming home stand as well that starts next week against the white socks Liam Hendrick pitch Saturday his fifth outing next outing expected to come on Tuesday still sounds like he's going to be active for the Red Sox white sock series which gets underway next Friday in Boston um do have some numbers of the night ah the Red Sox had an opportunity to go 13 games above 500 on the road with a victory Saturday night that did not happen for the socks um also had a a chance to clinch their 22nd Series win of the Season that did not happen and the socks now 13-4 with Saturday's loss in their last 17 against the Detroit Tigers and the socks finish the month of August with a losing record at 13 and 15 needed a victory on uh on Saturday to finish at 500 for the month of August and I would have taken that I think you would have taken that as well um the way things have been up and down volatile stock the socks in the month of August Tyler O'Neal mentioned 25th home run of the season now 25 RBI at home run in the first inning with two outs against ter scoo who picked up the victory breaking an 0 for just on this home stand alone how and Peta how six scoreless left the left the ball game on Friday night with an opportunity to pick up a victory the Red Sox right now could be on one two in this series and taking the field on Sunday looking to avoid a sweep instead it'll be the rubber game of the three game set but you know Crawford last time out six and two third Innings beo eight innings in the win that on the 28th earlier this week at home against Toronto best outing really for beo and his career you want him to repeat that next time out that should be during the Met Series so the Red Sox have gotten gotten the starters to go you know Bale goes eight Crawford worked into the seventh all of a sudden you know they're getting some starting pitching and think about this this one of my final points that I'm going to make as we wrap up here but think about this your rotation is shortened in the postseason and Andrew the goat I was going to bring this up earlier and lost my train of thought you're saying that they're right now they're they're not set up to be a playoff team I don't agree with that what are you going to go with your three starting pitchers for the postseason imagine if it's Hal beo Crawford three right-handers put Peta in the bullpen for a series all of a sudden you're really shortening the game Peta is a guy who can go give you two innings you can certainly extend them so you think about that for October just get there just get there I don't care if they were swept in a series and they're out in the first you know they're done just get there that's all that's all I ask then you go from there because I do believe this team when it if it writes itself use the speed get the hits going put three four hits together together you don't only have to rely on the Home Run ball I think they can be dangerous but at this point in time huh this point in time they've just got to get there they've just got to get there 140 first pitch Sunday Cooper chriswell was on the probable list for Sunday's start it's TBA Tigers were TBA now they've gone back to rookie Tai Madden pitched at the University of Texas the warmer Longhorn uh right now slated to make the start in the in the series finale after the series wraps in Detroit against the Tigers on Sunday then to New York against the Mets and Mets and uh Mets and Mets and the Red Sox are similar situations they're looking up at that third wild card team so they're going to be scratching and cl as well live within minutes of the last out of Sunday's finale against the Tigers hopefully we're
