WST Weekly: Blue Bombers win Banjo Bowl, Goldeyes advance, Jets Young Stars

Intro, Bombers win Banjo Bowl [Music] hello everyone and welcome into another edition of wst weekly my name is Conor rabak we've got a ton to break down this week the Blue Bombers won the banjo bowl over the Ruff Riders the Winnipeg gold eyes advanced in the American Association playoffs and the Winnipeg Jets their season is right around the corner there's a lot of news around the team the young star roster was released we're going to cover it all let's start with the bombers sweeping the Labor Day and banjo bow back to back on Saturday afternoon the Blue Bombers got the win and remained first in the cfl's west division now the banjo Bulls of years past have been bombers blowouts the games haven't even been close and this game was far from that a defensive battle from start to finish and the bombers defense came out on top 26- 21 was the final score the net yards were in Saskatchewan's favor 332 to 280 the first downs the bombers got that 17 to13 that's a low number of total first downs in the game two sacks for the Rough Riders but then the two turnover as well I'm going to talk later about Tyrell Ford but he got both of those interceptions one to start the game in the first quarter and then one to seal the game on the last drive as the Rough Riders were going for the win but like I said a defensive battle and the bombers over the past couple weeks they've established that they have one of the if not the best defense in the CFL Zack colos had just over 200 yards and a passing touchdown Kenny Lawler six catches 60 or so yards and a touchdown a decent game from the offense they moved the ball well and were able to convert when they got into the Red Zone with that Kenny Lawler touchdown the big concern offensively is Chris strer he took a late hit from Miles Brown throwing the ball in a short yardage situation and he had to be helped off the field and did not return there was no update after the game from Mich o Shay on Chris strer status but a lower leg injury like that you hate to see it and strer has been so dynamic in the Run game this year in short yardage and they were just throwing the ball with him which I know a lot of fans were hoping he would start to throw the ball in those short yardage situations a little bit more on a throwing play he got hurt really tough scene for the bombers hopefully he's healthy and ready to go after the bye and I'm sure the bombers are glad to be on a bye as well not only for the Chris rer injury that I just mentioned but also because in years pass after the high emotion of the Labor Day and the banjo Bowl there's usually a let down the week after from the bombers they usually lose that game so having a byee to recuperate maybe get healthier with Chris strer maybe he'll be ready to go after the B and then hit the ground running once again for the stretch run as they look to defend first place in the west going forward one last note on this game I just have to mention the atmosphere at Princess Auto Stadium this game sold out a while ago and driving to the stadium you could tell tailgating was happening all the way up and down buys and drive you go to the Princess Auto tailgate Zone that was packed and then inside the stadium yes there were some Rider fans there as there were bomber fans at the lior day classic but predominantly blue and it was an incredible atmosphere from start to finish as the bombers got the win they're seven- six on the season and they remain a top the cfl's west division the Winnipeg gold eyes played Winnipeg Goldeyes advance to West Division Final their first round of the American Association Series this week and they are advancing to the second round they chose the sou Falls canaries in round one who were actually the number two seed in the American association's West Division and after the first game that choice looked like the wrong one they lost 5 nothing they only had two hits as a team and the starting pitcher for the canaries just had the gold eyes guessing at the plate all night long but then they returned home and maybe that's exactly what they needed was a packed crowd at Blue Cross Park a 73 win on the Friday night and then the big Winnipeg double header right after the banjo Bowl they played a Do or Die game three and they won that one 10 to3 over the canaries and they're moving on taking on the Fargo Morehead Red Hawks in the west division finals that series gets started Monday night and then the gold eyes will return home on Wednesday night and then if necessary if this series needs a game three like round one did that'll be Thursday night as the bombers are on by and the Jet season hasn't gotten going yet if you want to see some playoff Baseball hit a gold eyes.com tickets you can get your tickets for that round now it was a great atmosphere I was in the building Friday night for that 73 win and the gold eyes came up with some clutch hits in that one and the building was awesome I'm going to talk more about the individual performances that powered the gold eyes to Victory later on when I hand out my three stars of the week but one thing I won't mention is the pitching that has been the strength of the gold eyes all season season long and that wasn't really their strength in this series but they kept it at a manageable level and the bats really backed them up at home with the seven and 10 runs to advance to the second round of the American Association playoffs now just real quick we're going to get into the Winnipeg Jets news of the week first the young Stars roster Winnipeg Jets news of the week was released the goenda chentes Elias salamonson is on defense and then up front we're going to get to see Braden joerger for the first time in a Winnipeg Jets uniform since being acquired in the Rut mordi trade we're going to get to see Brad Lambert Chaz Lucas who's now healthy after ankle surgery back in January kobby Barlo another first round pick and a lot more names than that I'm super fired up to finally watch some Winnipeg Jets hockey that all gets going Friday September 13th at the Young Stars tournament number two and number three kind of go hand inand first off the single game tickets were released this past week and with that came the promotional schedule for the Winnipeg Jets a lot of fun new promotional nights will be happening in side Canada Life Center my favorite that I'm looking forward to is Ukrainian Heritage night on January 2nd against the Anaheim Ducks that's just one of a few new promotional nights so go check that out single game tickets and maybe pick your favorite promotional night on the schedule number four the Cole profet news train did not slow down whatsoever this week as Darren Dreger of TSN was reporting that despite being unsigned an ongoing contract negotiations Peretti is in Winnipeg to train and skate with his teammates and he also intends on representing the Winnipeg Jets at next week's NHL player media tour in Las Vegas obviously Jets fans shouldn't have much to worry about as Peretti is an RFA but these are obviously great signs that he's in Winnipeg practicing with his teammates and plans on representing the Jets at a media tour maybe he'll have a contract before then maybe not but a contract before training camp seems likely at this point as Cole Peretti finds himself in Winnipeg and representing the Jets at the media for this video let's get into the three stars of the week my third star of the week is gold eyes outfielder my simmington and in the smaller sample size his batting average and on base percentage came down a little bit from the regular season but I talked earlier about the clutch hits that the gold eyes were receiving my Simington has been a few of them he had the massive home run at Blue Cross Park that really got the gold eyes going in that moment and he is going to be a huge part of this upcoming Series against the Fargo Morehead RedHawks both offensively and defensively where he takes away a ton of runs in the Outfield as a center fielder my Simington my third star of the week on W US Weekly my second St of the week is gold eyes infielder DH Edwin aoro he is having an absolutely monster playoff run so far 636 batting average two home runs seven RBI 667 on base percentage and seven hits I've mentioned it a ton of times in this video the clutch hits a Royo hit a massive three-run home run in game two in game one the gold eyes had only two hits that got shut out going into game two they only had one run through the first five innings the crowd was starting to get Restless there at Blue Cross Park and Edwin a Royo answered the bell with a three-run shot an absolutely massive turn of momentum and his numbers have ballooned big time in the playoffs here he's my second star of the week my first star of the week is bombers DB Tyrell Ford who had the two interceptions off of Trevor Harris in the banjo Bowl faran LGI didn't an interview with hus a few weeks ago on Winnipeg sports talk and he mentioned how Tyrell Ford would be an Allstar if he had to make his votes today and he more than solidified that case on Saturday with two more interceptions he's now got six on the season 35 tackles and he did it in a massive moment the first game of the season on CTV for the CFL a massive audience and Tyrell Ford stepped up in a massive massive way for that bombers defense he's my first star of the week here it is the upcoming sports schedule Upcoming Schedule here in Winnipeg over the next week like I mentioned before the bombers are on their buy Stanley Bryant Chris Sher Adam big hill all battling injuries this this is a very good time for our bye never mind the high emotion that comes with the Labor Day classic and the banjo Bowl the bombers will get a week to regroup get a little bit healthier and then play again the week after the gold eyes are going to continue their playoff run they're in the Western Division finals against the Fargo Morehead RedHawks their Series starts on the road Monday night September 9th and then returning home Wednesday September 11th is the first playoff game at Blue Cross Park and if necessary Thursday
