and we had a back and forth conversation do you know he said I'm keeping Destiny banned cuz I hate that guy yes why not just admit he hates you I think twitch is destined for failure and that feature are getting preferential treatment so this wasn't all by chance this was a uh you know we're figuring things I did not know this is what I was signing up for when I agreed to come but that that's you know that's on purpose I'm Theo I'm a software Dev I used to work at twitch which is probably how I ended up here a lot of opinions about software Dev stuff technology social media make videos on YouTube too at that's that's a completely untenable framework to work with it's actually super tenable I'm right now no yes but if it's when you're correct it's like oh because I'm correct but when I'm wrong it's because hey [ __ ] you Dan this is fun that that uh that doesn't work for me it is working for me right now understand that but so we are going to go through some twitch oh my god it works related it's there topics we'll see how the uh we'll see how the uh audio catches up so I'm the fifth a lot on this one I did not realize I was just here to defend bad decisions Swit you didn't tell him okay well here's the question when you guys go to the Bob Ross stuff yeah did you happen to bring up that I was the innovator on that did my name come up at all for that not once [ __ ] you wouldn't blame them you've seen the direction ofic employees shouldn't like the COO they like the COO it means he's a pushover and bad for the company should always say the COO employees typically have options and they like the CEO when their net worth goes up not when it goes down no okay all right Dan on Dan violence Hanan discovers that the twitch CEO is a fan discovers by the way uh one year ago my God we really scraping the bottom of the barrel here hold on oh yeah make it Zoom it more okay let me know if you guys can hear audio CEO defend job cuts and plans to meet with creators uh apparently in this article he also says this which I thought was interesting not a gamer himself clany mostly watches musicians or talk shows on Twitch he particularly enjoys leftist political commentator Hassan [ __ ] who has 2.5 million followers on the platform I like the frankness and the bluntness clany said he's comfortable saying what he believes did you know that he's comfortable saying what he believes what do you guys think about that well unless you know yeah I will go a different angle with this I like that the current CEO of twitch watches twitch and talks about the people he watches on Twitch that is a huge like like exponential Improvement on the state of leadership at twitch prior where the leaders at twitch before seemed like they were ashamed of twitch and the people who were on it and like didn't want to be caught watching it at all and their goal was to change the types of content twitch had on it fundamentally so they could be able to brag about it to their fellow rich people at random like meetups not actually caring about twitch the platform as it existed and the people who were on it it genuinely felt like a lot of twitch's older leadership looked down on Twitch and its content creators and Dan feels like he really wants to be part of the scene and like understand people and feels much more real in that sense he feels like a [ __ ] scumbag to me personally um I think that I mean listen you can say that uh I emailed the dude and he gave me nothing but weasel answers um he's a guy that has one job and that job is to be consistent on the rules across the board and he has done zero effort despite his promises to do so uh on the platform is the most inconsistent enforcement of rules across the board there's pure favoritism going across certain streamers versus not there's rules where if you you know if twitch staff kind of doesn't like you and you happen to click on the wrong link and a dick comes up you're banned but if you're liked oh don't worry about it no big deal and uh these are people's livelihood it's not up to your [ __ ] uh politics of what happens so [ __ ] you Dan Clancy go [ __ ] yourself I just agree with yes hold on Steve you don't hold these opinions that Dan and be like oh stepen hold these opinions get them back on here well I don't know how much you're not getting back on there when he's there dude that's great I don't know how much personal input he has into like the yeah the okay so I like how you just gave the most UN business like like employee [ __ ] think like oh you're saying the CEO doesn't personally control every single aspect of the company yeah Dan I think I didn't say that I said he'd definitely do you think he'd I emailed him specifically about you and he responded where he misses entire lines of text he's [ __ ] or down syndrome or something along those lines or number three he knows that you're banned he knows you're not getting unbanned which of those things do you think is the most likely I think he probably just doesn't personally intervene in the community moderation stuff that' be my guess that's weird there I think what were you going to say very for him to do no no no no no no no no real real quick because it might be weird if he uh personally intervened on some people getting banned right or unbanned yeah that would that would be uh strange yeah unfortunately uh All That Remains of my tweet here okay but uh is is this he specifically hey this is what I said So based based moment Hey DJ Clancy 9999 it's not wholesome quirky or cute that you the CEO of twitch are personally stepping in to help streamers who got banned unfairly it's sad sad that this person has put in put in an appeal and was denied maybe focus on keeping that from happening in the future instead of interact with this tweet when you made it and now I'm being forced to sit next to it I love that I love it yeah I I I there's so many layers internally to unfurl here and I don't really want to unfurl most of them but see what happens let me help you understand Dan's mindset when a CEO of a company is at a press conference and they're like hey like what are you guys doing about employees being mistreated by staff and the CEO goes oh we're looking into that Dan thinks that the CEO is actually going to the store and like looking around at that that's what he thinks so when Dan CL like oh you know maybe we'll take a look at that guy being banned or whatever he thinks that like you know Tom Clan's got the database open he's like okay well what was the band reason on this guy and let me go that's what Dan thinks um he's acting like he thinks that I will give some benefit of the doubt here in that the thing that's that Dan Clans is doing unique that I think is really good is he's actually on the ground floor having conversations with creators which is a very different thing normally like the previous twitch CEO was like what you're describing where he was like layers removed from literally every single thing I would just see the dude walking around the office with his iPad playing Hearthstone all day like he was fully checked out for the entire time I was at twitch yeah okay yeah he I streamed more in a week than he streamed in this like the five years I was there okay he just doesn't didn't use twitch it seemed like he didn't care anymore at that point he did at a point when twitch was still a Starcraft platform which is why he made it in the [ __ ] first place he was real deep on it but from that point forward he seemed like he just stopped caring wow H you're a hater oh sorry I was just I was just reading an unrelated article that has nothing to do with what we're talking about right now um but yeah I agree the CEO probably would never like step oh wait wait what did that say why why didn't you read it oh no no cuz I agree the CEO would never like address why someone was banned and never oh now we're just saying personally intervening yeah let's do that yeah go ahead so yeah uh one thing I will say is I feel like we're conflating the idea of a band being an accident or a mistake versus a ban being a strategic decision that was made by the business and we're just pretending these are the same thing he has stepped in for people getting banned incorrectly not for people being banned because of business decisions well hold on when it say steps in here so he he he went in and he you want to keep going no no read the article let's read it what does it say what does it say read it scroll down scroll SC scroll scoll scoll I am am the gatekeeper of the mouse always go of scrolling yes I I will scroll in a second he probably thinks the button to unban is something you have to step on he probably thinks it's literally like a game t peran for playing piano why are we so nice to thisy this is simpler than that like significantly simpler uh oh they're racist no okay twitch is very clearly a click at this point like more so than any other media platform like the top creators on Twitch are all a friend group there are finally some exceptions people like Kai just showing up out of nowhere and building his own thing and I love that it's really cool to see but other than him twitch's top like 15 or so streamers are just like the same friend group all hanging out together in LA and in Texas it's just like one cohesive group and when you go against the group you stop being included in things you stop performing on Twitch for the most part damn I've also seen people who were like streaming for years and doing okay and as soon as they even start interacting with those people they blow up it's it's very clear the best way to be successful on Twitch is to be part of like one of the three big groups within the click absolutely facts and in order for twitch to achieve its current goal of winning back Creator trust specifically with the top creators they have to win back Trust of that particular friend group and for reasons that I don't feel like going into it seems like that particular friend group doesn't like this dude too much wrong that friend group loves me the only people that the Pres does like me Assan there's a couple others in there who who name names cutie okay they're not part of the group anymore no one likes those people okay they're still part of the group barely streamer Awards I uh no one cares about streamer Awards the streamer gam is the thing they just did I'm not saying that I'm not defending the content or anything like that I'm just saying it's the state of twitch there's nothing to defend it's a it's nothing more than an Uber Eats okay or a Postmates service okay this is a platform that allows people to make a living and right now they are keeping someone off of it because of personally personal traits that they cannot change I I'm happy that the entire world of like social dynamics doesn't exist in your head Dan but in the rest of the world it does and because of that the twitch business needs to fix a lot of the bad sentiment issues they have with creators I agree and step one unbanning sneo you agree or disagree Stephen yeah that him a decent bit how the hell you manag to think about him more than me when you never worked there or have any involvement on it Beyond him being banned from it is very amusing to me I am a twitch I'm disappointed in y'all Yik it's okay all right it's actually going to probably work cuz like the most hardcore fans are the ones who would have bothered watch your five stream to sub in the first place and the here too like if they're willing to deal with you in the first place they're probably willing to watch this to probably most of those people are here first off you have me confused with a streamer that wears a [ __ ] hoodie over his face okay five viewers is something why even bother streaming at that point okay I don't know i' ask you honestly oh my God why don't give five viewers I can't answer that question play something else with audio so I can see it echos again okay it is going to okay uh Dan Clancy shows off his twitch stream this must have been something that was very awkward for him to do here we go Echo time pretty much ago oh yeah this one and now you have a clip feed okay MH um suppose you want to check out the stories to see you click there yeah and now you're in your story okay yep so so I will be clear I don't think this a recommendation I don't think this is because that's what he watches so much as that is literally the only things that get any clickthrough with these new features the idea of a feed suggests that the content can appear interesting in a short amount of time and most live streams aren't interesting in a 5-second interval a stream is interesting is you have a reason to be there you already chose to go there and you want to watch it live content isn't discoverable for that particular reason and that's why something like Tik Tok is doing so well because each short that you're scrolling through as you scroll through the feed was made to be digestible as quickly as possible I'm sorry I might just be Tech [ __ ] I'm not wait what do you do technologically wise so I do like any software development stuff yes okay so my guess would be that on any sufficiently complex system you can broadly categorize content I don't know why booby content wouldn't broadly be categorized in a bucket that wouldn't be fed to somebody unless they've like explicitly made for rays into that realm does that make sense yes the metrics that tend to be looked at when doing recommendation systems especially modern ones are are two things it's viewership overlap rather than just like strict buckets like this is the bucket with boobs this is the bucket with fortnite it's YouTube watched four of the same videos I watched three of those four videos now YouTube is spamming me with the fourth video because it wants to bridge the gap between viewership but what I'm saying is like I feel like it would be like arbitrarily difficult like trivially difficult to categorize some stuff as like I don't want to say adult cuz makes it like porn but like you'd have an adult bucket and it's like these types of things don't get bridged unless you've intentionally already clicked off into it and then they'll bridging that typ of cont and twitch almost certainly should have started introducing these things but the way they did that is with the 18 plus button and with the new categories like the the beach and pools whatever one that they did for all the hot but it shouldn't be an 18 it shouldn't be a button that a streamer sets they should all be automatically CU I'm sure they have the information in the the reason that this hasn't happened is twitch's recommendations were so bad anyways that they just didn't bother investing in these types of things further they couldn't if they can't find something that you want to watch they shouldn't put effort into not showing these other things too cuz first they have to figure out what you want to watch and that's been their focus is how do we get you something you'll actually click on and chances are all of this content even if they were pretty good at filtering it if one thing snuck through and it's clickthrough rate was as much higher as it would be cuz when you're looking at a bunch of stream thumbnails most of them are somebody playing a game in a moment that you don't know anything about if one of them is an attractive a person that you're attracted to and the other seven are just screenshots of games that's the only one that's clickable all for you defend this feature defend it this feature uh is this stories or is this um is it stories or St yeah this is Twitch stories I can defend not on web it's a weird experience there the this is actually one of the few features twitch I shipped recently that I kind of liked I did a whole thread defending it a while back the reason I think this is a good idea is that twitch doesn't have a way for you to engage when you're offline so if you have portions of your audience that aren't live when you're live like I stream at a weird time I stream from 1:00 p.m. to around 7:00 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesdays and only then which means a lot of the EU audience just can't catch me or they have to bail early if I can after Stream post some things on my story they can still like when they're browsing twitch have some amount of Engagement with me which is actually a cool thing how they ship this day one with no video support on a video platform is something that absolutely [ __ ] baffles me and I'm ashamed that they like people I worked with there would allow that to ship without video on a video site other than that this like the concept was good I think you're blinded by your by your continued relationship with the people there just understand that they're all [ __ ] basically there is no explanation for having a product as bad as what twitch is I worked on this feature when I first got announced it was one of the only features twitch has shipped in the last four years that I've said anything positive about it's want to talk about the feed so you could hear me get full unhinged because that is one of the stupidest decisions twitch has ever made I made a video called the twitch Doom spiral that I posted on my second Channel last week because I think twitch is destined for fa and that feature is the golden example of how they are the feed when you scroll through twitch now or when you open the Twitch app it no longer goes to the following tab the following tab no longer exists it goes to I can even show you whatever you're saying that makes sense though right everything is heading in this direction and it's probably a good idea unfortunately right that it used to be that um that you would chronologically be served content based upon who you follow and when was posted but I'm pretty sure every major social the way that twitch worked was very different because live content is fundamentally different like asynchronous content where like I post it and then you see it hours later where you're describing absolutely the like order of like Facebook and Twitter it it shows you it was just showing like in order of when you posted that was not great and algorithms significantly better okay when it comes to live viewership people don't go to Twitch to find something to watch they go to Twitch because they're somebody they want to watch on Twitch and they have a feeling they should be live around then or they saw it on another platform or they know their schedule well people don't go to twitch.tv the homepage they go to tv/ the person that they're there for over 70% of twitch sessions start on a channel page not the homepage people don't go to Twitch to look for Content they go to Twitch to watch specific content they discover content on platforms that have more discoverability features wait do you think do you still think this is true yes absolutely this is true because um all I know is I got a level five hype train going on right now so uh good job um so I understand what you're saying in the past this was definitely true where um I don't know wait how old are you do you say your age 29 um do you know what team liquid is oh yes yeah okay so way back in the day wait how long have you known about me I didn't know of you beyond like being a Starcraft player at some point okay fine don't worry I'm just so way back in the day um being found on like Justin TV or TW like none of the streaming sites had any discoverability whatsoever you had to be indexed in other sites so like Team Liquid would be the site yeah that was the major one back of the day um and then later on I think there might have been a league site that did uh indexing for a while but I feel like it's moved more and more to where the discoverability is on Twitch itself where you say 70% start on a viewer page but I feel like like where are you being discovered if you're on Twitch isn't it with collabs with other streamers and stuff like no it's other platforms like what other platforms are you big Tik Tok Twitter YouTube all of these places the same reason your streams blew up it's CU you were posting YouTube videos of them well no it was cuz I was indexed on Team Liquid okay but but I understand what you're saying like you went from like a streamer that could make a living to a streamer that can run multiple businesses sure because of your content on other platforms hm wow I super disagree with I'm so curious what the numbers look like because I feel like when I look August by the way the one who actually made this all happen yeah when I look at um when I when I look at like carryover from YouTube to Twitch um like I'm trying to think didn't PewDiePie was it was like 15 or 20,000 ask chat sure can you pull up chat uh yeah hey dgg chat uh yeah it's the F projector here I no it's if you want to talk to them I was just going to tell what do you want what do you want to ask them that's a great view that's really them I was going to ask them how many of y'all showed up because you saw Destiny on a different platform I want ones in chat if you found him somewhere else how it works hold on wait wait well I I agree with you now but I'm going to be a bad example here because um because I'm banned from twitch right so of course they found me a lot of these people found me on other platforms right but you found okay so you found him through something that wasn't live content you found him through a video not through a stream I want yeses if you did and no if you found him live why do you think so many YouTubers have so much trouble transitioning into like live content and having like huge viewer bases doing doing it cuz I feel like a lot of people making good live content is hard too it's not a like either or it's a yes and like you have to be good at doing live content and you have to be good at building audience on places that they can engage without having to commit to a video or without having to commit to a stream the issue with a stream is when I go to a stream the first time any given moment it's almost certainly not going to be a moment where I can have a reason to keep watching it's just going to be confusion if you show up in the middle of somebody like in the middle of a game you don't have the context of the beginning of the round or even what's going on if you showed up in this stre right now you might not even know who the I am and why I'm here most of you you guys probably don't anyways but all of this makes live content much harder to drop into the benefit of having Asing content is you can see the start always and when you're now competing with something like Tik Tok where people are obsessing over the editing process to make the intro to make the first 5 Seconds as compelling as possible a live stream where you're just going off for hours can never be as good an intro for somebody as a Tik Tok that they're scrolling through their feed on top of that the number of pieces of content and the number of creators you engage with on those platforms is like 10 to 100 times different like when I scroll through Twitter I'm seeing hundreds of posts tens of like hundreds of people that I've possibly never even seen before or followed if I open up my Twitter right now and scroll like one page down I'll see at least two accounts that I'm not following and one I've probably never seen before if I go to something like YouTube and I scroll through I'll see a lot of videos from my people I'm sub to but some that I'm not if I scroll through Tik Tok I'm engaging with and consuming the content of people who have never watched before and they know that and they've structured their content to be as comp telling as possible from that first half second and you can't do that on Twitch yeah I definitely agree with that twitch okay um hug twitch for Discovery but my hot take is that twitch isn't competing with YouTube It's competing with only fans it is the bottom of the funnel nobody goes to only fans to find a new Creator they go to only fans because they saw a Creator somewhere else and they want to pay them and like see their content in a different format that's what twitch is Twitch is an only fans competitor now since both of you guys are going to I don't know why especially you would do the sweeping here the you saw the Dan Clancy joking uh with the doct disrespect being banned thing now Doc was banned according to his own words for having inappropriate conversations with a minor and I think it is absolutely the case that Mr Clancy knows if not the the the contents of those messages the reasoning why now let me ask was was Dr D B before or after Clancy came on uh way before way before way before Oh it wouldn't surprise me if Clancy knew nothing about that actually the number of people who knew that information was actually hilariously small you think that the CEO of twitch I'm not saying he couldn't get the information I'm saying he probably didn't care to get it actually yeah wow I don't know if he would have been able to get it I bet there would have you would have it would have been like a I don't want to say need to know like security clearance but if he would have started like knocking at legal stone like I need to see this like if there was a speech or a presentation or wouldn't have been restricted enough that if like he said hey I want to see this that they would have kept it from him unless there was like an ongoing legal case you guys think this is like the government like uh sorry sir uh that's uh only need to know information according to our department head you can't get that he's a CEO he's the president he's has top secret clearance for all [ __ ] at [ __ ] uh at twitch there there's no way he didn't know also one of the biggest stars don't you think that's something you would need to know to effectively represent your company as a COO so just a quick like rough idea of a overview of how like the twitch band system works the people in like the general safety space can absolutely see reasons for why people were banned possibly too permissively I believe they actually put a lot of work into changing that recently they also did an overhaul of the permission system we finally after like how long ever long T have been around you can ban staff from your chat finally you weren't able to because they were using a single permission system where staff was also a role for people on the safety org trying to make sure things were safe on the platform so they couldn't allow that they changed that s so on one hand if you're banned and that's in the report that can be seen by a decent number of people on unless they override the reason in the report and say like legal off you skated or something like that and then they just don't leave any notes and I know for a fact the doc report had that on it it's there are not many that like have the info on the report itself off you skate in that way but it was one of them so like random employees who said they knew are probably lying this was very much on a need to know basis at the time and I honestly believe just cuz it's not a thing people talked about a lot that is a thing that clany would have even bothered looking into it's just not within his Focus Focus area at all there's a lot of dumb drama twitch is involved in his Focus isn't that his focus is working with creators to the relationship and bad vibes that twitch has had with creators for a long time now and thinking about the creators that have created some of the worst Vibes on the platform is not something I could I I would understand why he wouldn't want to spend a lot of his time thinking about that so like I bet if you were to ask I bet he wouldn't know what unless he just happen to follow the news he would know what iceid was ban for next to him at the streamer Awards and he would regularly like nudge be like yo uh who are that who's that or like what's going on here when they were playing like the old like the overviews of the history of twitch stuff like he he's very tuned in to the last three years or so of twitch everything before then is like like he doesn't know what happened there which is understandable he's only recently become this involved in the platform and went from like just helping run product engineering stuff to running the company what I'm surprised about is that I thought he was going to lean more on like the engineering and Tech side that's also what the old CEO did he was very much an engineer but he seems genuinely invested in making creators or in being involved with creat understanding them and making them feel heard and like understood by twitch again it's like a tangible difference one of the things that I don't like that I feel like is happening in the software world and I understand I think it's plugged into what you were saying before about how you have to show exponential growth you got to grow grow grow is I don't like that it's no longer acceptable for a a service to exist that does a product really well if you can offer any other like product you have to have like as many [ __ ] vertical as possible and I feel like that Obsession has weakened so much in terms of branding like when Twitter uh was was before Elon Musk bought it everything about Twitter like the blue check mark stuff that was like some serious [ __ ] that was like if you got one it was like a really big deal it was cool like when Elon first talked about expanding it or like expanding like the Tweet messaging all of that initially was such an insanely cool crazy idea because it was such a restricted feature set on that product but now like if Twitter were announced a new feature I don't know if anybody would give a [ __ ] I wouldn't give a [ __ ] and I feel like twitch has a similar issue where it's like what is your what you what what product are you trying to deliver on because if you look at like the streaming service that product I don't know if that's been approved upon it like 8 years it was it about 7 years ago silly enough but uh yeah whated when they went from 15 seconds of latency down to about two oh they brought from the yes that's true well they brought it back to what it was before but the way it was before was not even close to scalable and that only worked in like local it would at all yeah and they couldn't do the encoder the different qualities so the fact they got it down to like you can watch a 360p stream on the other side of the world and get it in under two seconds was like actually unbelievable that was yeah it was a big deal and that was and I agree that was a big deal but yeah 7 years ago that was it and and that wasn't even like a new feature I it was just like improving the current product which is good that was really good but they have they've done nothing like IVs my understanding is IVs does support that DVR feature right now but it's not implemented on twitch's uh haven't looked into IVs supporting that it wouldn't surprise me I yeah I'm surprised they haven't bothered with the DVR stuff and the ability to like rewind when somebody's live like they probably should have gotten on that by now the thing with twitch is like the way that the product is built the vaud player and the live player are are entirely different with almost nothing overlapping or shared between the two so they would have to like fundamentally rethink the product and not just on the website but on the mobile apps too and the mobile apps they problem that EMT had where they just didn't give a [ __ ] about twitch like when I worked with other Engineers on chat on safety on Creator tools and all these other places most of them cared some amount about twitch like they would watch it on a second monitor when they were working they would have conversation about the streamers that they liked but when it came to the mobile app in particular the people who were on the iOS or Android teams they didn't like twitch they liked iOS or they liked Android and this happened all the time we like I was fighting to try and get a ban button added on the mobile chat mhm and we even gave them headcount and let them hire Engineers that should have been for safety on mobile instead because I said they didn't have enough people to build these features and they took those people and had them build [ __ ] watch parties with a crappy like Amazon collaboration like Prime streaming thing and we didn't get the band features until years later they even were uh the the one that really rubbed me the wrong way you're an ioner now are you familiar with widgets the idea of like having a little part of an app on your homepage that got added I think it was iOS 14 or 15 iOS didn't have those for a long time even though had it forever and twitch got a widget what like 6 months or something no twitch got a widget day negative one they actually had the engineer from the twitch team present at WWDC to reveal the feature and then he quit twitch and worked at Apple a month and a half later he never gave a [ __ ] about making twitch a better platform he just wanted to work at Apple and twitch was away there sure and this very common that was a much different vibe than I remember the really early I don't know if these were they might have been mlg's but I remember hanging out with it was like uh it was emit cheer Kevin Lynn um Justin is the best and Justin's great too yeah wait which Justin uh I'm specifically thinking of gunun yes that one gun is one my best friends okay yeah yeah yeah yeah and these guys were especially the gun I don't know what he does now but like yeah that guy was like really passionate about all the time get really good shot of that vodka bottle on the camera now Dan thanks nice good job thank you yeah yeah they were all all of these guys were like really passionate and really excited about like everything I don't even know if they were C Level at that point I don't know if they even had like that structure but yeah they were like all like the founder and they were super hyped about all the streaming Tech yeah and it definitely feels very corporate now in the yeah that's so the one thing I'll give EMT a lot of credit for is he did a phenomenal job of keeping Amazon out of twitch after the acquisition there's like like a dumb story I tell but I think it does really show like where his priorities were when Amazon came in for like the financial audit to figure out like where the cost were and how they were going to do Amazon's whole frugality thing with the Amazon values like the famous Amazon stories they would instead of buying desks it was slightly cheaper to buy more doors for the building and they would buy the doors and make every engineer take the door and four 2x4s and turn that into a desk themselves there way this this was actually true for the first like eight years of Amazon yes oh wait when we say first eight years like when it was found out like in 1994 or when eight years of them having the like main office it was this was a very well-known Amazon story like it's the the point is that like this might this might be true but this is like this is before it was like a multi-trillion not trilon but like huge amazon.com the store that people were using for buying a lot of things EX for like like this had only recently stopped when I was an intern in 2016 okay like people like we still had those desks but they were made by an employee instead of being made by you okay yeah but like the desk I had at Amazon in 20 it was 15 or 16 whichever year Windows 10 came out that was the whole thing whichever year that was my desk was still a is centered around helping the mobile team find new jobs not around making a decent mobile app oh the twitch mobile app is a tragedy of software design and usability it's actually unbelievable it feels like they don't actually use it I mostly watch video on my phone I just use my computer for work or my desktop for video games and my phone for watching video and watching streams I went from using twitch like once a week to check it on my friends to never checking it ever at all because I got into the new mobile app and like the feed stuff about a year in advance cuz they were letting people who like knew people and could get Early Access like twitchcon and stuff see it early and I gave a ton of feedback as many did that this was an unusable experience it takes like the one good thing about twitch which is finding the person you want to watch and hanging out with them throws it away in favor of the worst discoverability feed okay wait hold on what okay we never actually got what was the feed what is the feed so the feed is the twitch homepage now immediately full screen plays with audio blasting a random stream it thinks you will like or a clip from a random streamer thinks you will like and you scroll through those until you find something you want to watch okay like streamers that you follow that are like no just series of things you'll like oh is there a following thing at all anymore or you have to so you have to go to search and it shows you categories you have to scroll down a little bit and then manually click the people on following button and then you can kind of see the old following view don't they have [ __ ] ton of data around how users engage with these Pages wouldn't they see the analytics on the mobile app are not really present they have very very surprisingly little insight on how people actually use the app and their goal wasn't to embrace the patterns people had it was discover all of these users who just aren't using it yet is going to spawn how do you uh I know with developer mode you can make this thing uh go to mobile mode oh so the mobile site and mobile app have literally nothing to do with each other at all oh from the browser right I quit twitch because I wanted to build better tools for creators and the Creator team was a bit of a [ __ ] here comes the Shilling okay what's the site just get it out right now what's the site upload thing.com ping. is it's Zoom for streamers make it easier to do live collabs I built it because train Rex's podcast was scuffed as [ __ ] as he so calls it he said he would paid literally any amount of money for a tool that didn't suck the way the Discord did for doing like live collaborations so I hacked something together in a few days showed it to him showed it to gun run gunun said I need this for my vtuber [ __ ] right now and I quit my job to work on that full-time and it went pretty well we went through my combinator did great the reason I bring it up is I'm very familiar with the idea of live video content collaborations and when I had quit and built this and got VC money and was getting a lot of attention and and like VC hype and [ __ ] twitch got a little bit scared of that and they decided to go all in on a project they had specked out a long time ago which was meant to be the equivalent of like clubhouses audio product which is like what Twitter spaces cloned hey what happened to clubhouse I have no idea what happened to clubhous it probably got eaten because Twitter spaces was the same experience except you actually had interesting things to look at when you were inside of the space people just posting and complaining about stuff there's nothing to scroll on CL houseo it obviously died the thing that was interesting here is they had the spec for an audio only I want to quickly shout things on your stream with you kind of like what you do with the drop-ins with like Discord as a twitch core feature then they saw me make this Sor hold on can I when you say twitch core feature on your stream and have a little button I could click to join your stream and Shout at asking you like is this like an OBS integration or how are they getting how is this working the way that this was going to work was it would either be an OBS plugin that would run on your computer or an actual piece of software you install this was all a proposal at the time okay okay but it was entirely scrapped because Twitter or twitch had just stopped building tools for creators so I quit and built something similar not even knowing that spec existed because I wanted to help people like train Rex do live video collaborations and the spec was just for an audio product for a random viewer to join your stream temporarily to say something it's for it was like for viewer Collins effectively was the goal okay so when I put out my product wait wait spec was that the name of the product twitch spec was the the term for when you're planning out a project so the spec for I think it was I forg the name of what it was called it was something some reference to clubhouse that they had made okay so just to summarize sry um train want to build a video collt ising like this you you work on a project like this twitch had already spec out a project like this and that's the project they spec out was just audio and viewer Collins mine was creators planning ahead of time to do so they they were very different but then they saw mine getting success they actually went as far as having some product managers and people at twitch claimed they wanted to use ping for some of their like twitch Rivals events so they came to my service they took calls with me they were trying it out I gave them in like an everything unlocked room and then they announced 5ish months later that they were shipping a product called guest star and from what I had heard from people this was meant to be the final version of that original like audio only product that was very clearly inspired by what we had built down to like the names of features and buttons and things like the the big thing that we had done different with ping is if you wanted to bring a guest into the stream it wasn't like crazy screen capture [ __ ] like all the ndi things you were just dealing with you would hover over them in ping click a little copy button add a browser Source in OBS and paste the URL and now they're just in your stream as a layer you can transform and do whatever you want with it was a really convenient way to like orchestrate your stream in OBS okay and the other person is sending video to that browser window with OBS themselves or yeah so it's you're in a little video call just like Google meet or Discord inow so I just I send the link for my call you join it and now I have a custom URL for you to embed an OBS and the video call if I just want to hang in that to like chat with you okay yeah it was meant to make it way easier to send a link to is that I remember when that came out is that still a thing on Twitch or did they dump that I think they rebranded it a couple times I don't know I don't know if the core product still called guest star but the infro has been repurposed for a new thing they just introduced called dropin which is trying to go back to that original Vision because they went too far down the path I went down two and a half three years ago okay realize it sucks which I had already realized by the time they were shipping it which was really funny they had went down the exact same path with like 20 Engineers over a year and a half pushed it disgustingly hard like it was annoying how much they were pushing guest star everywhere and like paying streamers to use it for events and stuff like unbelievable that they thought this was going to change the way people made content on Twitch I concluded it wouldn't long before so they just changed guest star now to not work the same way I did with like you have a call with multiple people and you're copy pasting them into OBS directly now you have a persistent window in your OBS which is for the like Drop in if somebody wants to drop into your stream and now when you're live on Twitch unless you manually turn this feature off in like four [ __ ] places and even then it's only off for the stream you're on right now any streamer that is live when they go to the twitch homepage will see a little button next to every person who is live that hasn't bothered to turn this off where I can join your stream with my stream okay so you know the classic like you're talking to somebody on Twitch you go to their stream to see them but you're on Discord call with them so the audio is all laggy like relative to the video and [ __ ] sure they tried to make that a core feature on Twitch okay the issue with this is that when you click the button they assume you're doing this the old school guest star Callin way so the first thing they do is activate your webcam which is dumb for a lot of reasons as I'm sure you know when from a tech point of view I'm sorry so hold on because I'm just trying to understand how this integrates into like turning a webcam on so you would click the button this is assuming OBS is already open or it's assuming not so there's two bad assumptions here the first one is the way the product was originally built was we would all get in the equivalent of a video call in the browser together while you also had OBS running and you would embed the people individually inside of OBS I'm just trying to imagine how could How could a camera ever be accident turned on when you join that link the first time it immediately activates the camera with assuming OBS is open or does it just activate in the browser in the browser okay that makes more sense okay got you like it would like a Google meet thing okay got exactly then they choose made this drop in feature where I am connecting our streams together effectively but since it's using the same page the same infro the same everything it would start by activating your webcam and using the old webcam like the default webcam on your device gotcha okay makes sense which is annoying for a bunch of reasons the biggest one isn't even potential security issue for vtubers it's that if you using your webcam for OBS and then your browser tries to access it Windows does not like when you use the same video device in two places and it will break in both okay so you might just have your stream go down because you click the wrong link sure okay yeah really really dumb implementation they should not have used the old guest star anything when building drop in and uh I haven't seen anyone actually using the feature yet so they're desperately trying to justify the investment they made having a lot of Engineers working on this for a lot of time by trying to find some new content type that can come out of it and has just been a failure okay okay what what we few seconds of this okay and now uh so what do you want to do this if you want to go to extensively not fun like I can explain in detail why I think twitch's layoff the right decision nope definitely don't want to do that how many plays does twitch have now uh they were out around 2,000 when I left they're down to way under a th000 now it's it's about a 2/3 cut from right now okay I'm just going really good never own me on anything I'm unable does that mean you're like in a lot of debt or no if I was in a lot of debt then you could own me you're all over the place Theo you need to go back to shifted to streaming on Kick a notable Nazi site which is known for its relatively LAX moderation policy in uh combination with rumble.com in the post made by Steven on X on June 15 2024 he seemingly referred to sneo who has recently had his channel reinstated by twe twitch twitch [ __ ] both of you stepen said that he is converting to Islam BRB which some fans speculate is alluding to sneo in his ban being lifted normally I would accuse a blog post like this of being or written by AI but it wouldn't make it this bad and boring you thought what we were doing was hard to care about this is this is fun Destiny shares twitch's email response rejecting his ban appeal hey Destiny your account was recently suspended for hateful conduct y a member of our team that hates you and watches us on all day and wishes that you would die has reviewed your appeal just kidding we haven't and after taking a look just kidding we didn't into the details of your case we have determined that you can go yourself and I really enjoyed writing this email signed just kidding this is anous yeah cuz somebody definitely wrote this email didn't just click the button that does it obviously I like it more my way I know you do be your thing Dan might have actually written that email Dan Clancy the CEO he probably personally oversees every single B appeal he could have he could have that would been know Stephen is known for his outspoken racism and opinions on transgender issues happening around the world however his behavior and remarks have often led him to be the subject of controversy and subsequently incur bans from twitch how many have you had over the years total I have no idea probably five or 10 I don't know five five what the article says five very well written AI generated they were going to work on implementing that future four years ago it's coming yeah I was really excited when they said that that was happening right around when I left and I was excited for them to do I even said that at one of the yeah yeah yeah that that has been promised many times I was on the team when they promised and it just never got made I hope theyd fix that wait so what team did you work on again I so I was on Creative which was the non gaming like original team I moved to VOD for like 3 weeks then I landed on safety for like three and a half four years and then I did creator for
