College Football 25 UL Monroe Dynasty - Close game against Arkansas State - Ep. 12

hello and welcome back to another episode of the coaching Journey Series going to update on recruiting here before we get into our final weeks of the first season here with Louisiana Monroe we're close to sealing the deal on this athlete Kendall bage who has been listed as a tight end so he looks a little more athletic than our current crop of tight ends which if you've watched that Bailey has been insanely slow to say the least we're getting close on sealing the or maintaining the lead here on the strong safety only only one with much influence so but obviously as I've said before big schools are in the mix so just trying to keep investing um I already have some I've already signed to safety but I figure worst case scenario they can be they can switch positions or one can be free safety one one can be strong maybe even play at cornerback if needed depending on the um depending on the uh flexibility of players only have five points in this guy I don't see us getting into the mix but this is another athlete SL tight end only one with much influence so continuing to push on him this is another guy we jumped into the mix on because we're the only one that's made him an offer um so I have some points into him hopefully we can close a deal on at least one player and have some more hours to work with and invest on him and be nice to end the season and get the few three stars into our um recruiting class for the season we remain in in the lead on this right tackle just continuing to put points into him as well same with his fullback Louisiana is uh Dan on us but we still have a lead and then this outside linebacker just tried to put some points into him see if we could jump into the mix as well since uh we missed out on a fourstar recruit so but yeah that's the recruiting for week 13 and we will head into our game against Arkansas state which is a team I was thinking about starting a dynasty with but ultimately win this route for this first series glad to have you with us in Jonesboro Arkansas sentennial Bank Stadium home to the red wolves of Arkansas state and fans have been fired up for this one all day today a couple of sun Bel Rivals ready to square off as we'll see the UL Monroe warhawks taking on a squad hoping to prevent another L this week the Arkansas state red wol glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis David Po and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to Tee It [Applause] Up got it [Applause] out of the gun the inside K and that's the way they'll start and they hope he gets better no game stopping the run is about physicality it's about I'm bigger than you I'm stronger than you up front really nice job by the defense showing the strength Bo up stuffing the Run looking for a man it's Harry he makes the connection still on his feet at the 45 open Runway ahead big big gain on that one as he steps out of bounds with a first down I know it's early in the game but defensively after that play you know you have to tackle the catch when this guy gets the ball in his hands he is so dangerous after the fact so it's okay for him to make catches just got to get him to the ground quickly running back searching for a hole they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one listen guys this is one of the top 10 passing offenses in the entire country maybe they're trying to catch the defense napping by going goal line and running the football not a lot of success on that last play hey bud get back to doing what you do best throw the ball kind of commentary is that saying I'm going in goal line I'm in shotgun quarterback wants to throw on second down and it'll be incomplete this defense is physical and pass deep picker from here but they'd love to take it off of his foot and convert the first down from the gun wants to [Applause] pass can't quite make the connection there might have let him a little too much and they'll send out the kicker to try a field goal he splits to uppr and puts three on the board and after the three spot [Applause] ready [Applause] Crick the give is to Smith finding a way to put that foot in the ground and get it up to the 37 yd line eight yd pickup on first down leaves him with second and short leaves it with the back that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there third down after the [Applause] run looking to move the chain they throw it complete to the left works his way to the 41 and that is plenty to give him a first down well look that wasn't a touchdown that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting and this will be incomplete a big hit there fores second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they'd throw it again the receivers often will run their route based on the side adjustment back to throw it's Harry and it's intercepted a turnover for the defense bringing it back Jesus Aras [Applause] stay sometimes I just outthink myself they'll start this drive with a pass fires to the tight end and that corner came in hot despite knowing that he was giving up some SI I'll tell you I love the play call on first down here you're just trying to find an easy completion in the short and the ball comes out what a disastrous play bounced right back to them well ball security doesn't just apply to running backs and receivers QB's got to keep two hands on the ball as well they're very lucky after that fumble that the offense jumped on let's see what call they have on Third and long from the 28 at the 40 there he goes he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down and there you go you see you don't have to throw bombs to get big plays in the passing game just screen it to your running back as soon as he catches it he gets up field and how about the downfield blocking by these linemen and the wide receivers as they rip off that explosive play running backs are not just running backs anymore you're going to be a wide receiver in today's football and a great job sneaking out of the back field the football let them get some positive yardage quarterback flips in head quickly to the receiver really putting together a threat now they get the first hits at the 37 it's so hard for a defense to have to stop plays like that because it really forces you to play with great eye discipline you see the pre- snap motion defense doesn't know if he's just running across the field and is's going to run a route if he's going to block or if he has the football that time he was able to outflank the def and hurt them to get that first down guys out the back field now it's not just run the ball downhill anymore you got to be first I got to be able to tust you in the pass game and I got to be able to throw you the football you can do that right there I know you're going to catch it and I can defend on from the shotgun the inside k at the 20 he's got space he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense I'll tell you what a few more runs like that and defensively you start thinking more guys in the Box more big guys I better stop this guy cuz he's unbelievable just great job breaking off the big run and the OC is going to give him the ball some quarterback empties his back field quarterback will audible looking to throw it's Harry this time on Target and he'll make his way out of bounds after the solid pick up ready both teams made no secret they wanted to Target their big play receivers and they've done just that in the [Applause] first just about ready to get things started here in the second we'll see if they continue to flex that [Applause] muscle we've got this third down play to open the quarter here we go they'll try to get the first through the air and they knock him down but he got past the line to gain perfect timing to call that pass PL third and short down here in the Red Zone everybody in the stadium expecting you to run the football and if you don't get it maybe you kick a field goal maybe you go for it on Fourth you don't have to worry about that now because of the pass the end zone he goes touchdown warhawks you just simply can't say enough about this guy and what he has meant to this offense Big Time Players made big plays in big games on here we go trying to find his man on first down they'll run the screen and he goes out of bounds after a nice pick up on that one I'll tell you what if you want to be overzealous and you want to be a bler all the time I like running the screen right behind him did a great job throwing the screen almost broke this one for a long long game but it just keeps the defense a little bit more honest if you want to start bringing a lot of pressure brought to the ground but not before getting enough for the first down this slot receiver is a guy the defense has to be careful of he runs good routes he's got some speed and if you're not careful this guy can gash you the offense getting set for a first down from the [Applause] 45 Smith takes the hand off he is delivering the blow while running the ball and he gets to the 39 you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second down really really manageable that's a great job by the offense back to throw it's Harry makes the grab down the middle and the defense makes the immediate tackle but he has enough for the first down you got to give the o line a lot of credit there because it gave the receiver time to work all the way across the field on the drag route against Zone coverage back gets it to him he's able to turn it up and get a first down to the air on first down here he goes breaking the pocket just couldn't find an open man he'll get rid of it and it'll be second down like the job by the defense there in coverage they took every option away from the quarterback he was outside of the pocket nowhere to go with it so they forced the incompletion throw away incompletion on first down now they face a second and 10 from the 31 get quarterback checking the play on second down he's looking down field got his man quickly running toward the T he goes out of bounds after the big play but there is a penalty marker on the field let's see what that one's about the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty and the warhawks have it in scoring position on first and goal here we go power football with the run and he takes it to the house touchdown you El Monroe this defense is going to have [Applause] to they'll the running back and leave it with him and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up man who says you can't run up the middle anymore right everybody thinks I got to make big plays I got to go way out to the left way out to the right way out in space nope right down the middle nice blocking how about the running back you could tell the speed the wheels does a great job getting down the field making a huge rushing play and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball ready after the misfire now on second down looking to throw a tering just too much of a rush and down goes the quarterback just behind the Midfield stri at the 49 I'm not positive but that first down marker might be in the next [Applause] County on Third and long he's going to have to turn one loose down field working that left side and this defense was flailing as he weaved his way and got down to the 26 wow and what a great job by that quarterback finding his open receiver on third down you know guys one of the most telling stats at the end of the game is third down conversion percentage if you're a great third down team it's invaluable to your offensive success and that's why teams drill third down so much in practice they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some lanes for their running back that was just a perfectly choreographed screen the line got out on time the running back had a wall in front of it and I think the quarterback did a really good job of selling pass and kind of dodging the pass rush getting it to the running back and then let him do the rest you got him in space he'll pick up yards in a hurry the warhawks have it with a first and 10 [Applause] they're in the red zone and they'll pass it the short hands it's Hill they make the stop trying to pick up just a little bit at a time to get to that first down marker this quarterback right now is in Groove he's doing a nice job preset he's reading the coverage and he's getting an idea of where he wants to go with the football that's why the ball's coming out of his hands so quickly that's why he seems like he's in a great mad man that's a big opportunity for the running back I'm trying to find ways to feature this guy and get him the football in space and not just hand it to him all the time and tell you what I'm a lot less likely to find those plays if he can't re in those catches and this junior quarterback shows you why the scouts love that big arm of his he might have expected to see this DB up in his receiver's kitchen instead nice little Zone and they pick up the first man offenses are getting so good ree at seeing the holes in Zone and he takes it in for the score touchdown warhawks man oh man what a day his third touchdown rushing showing you he's got a little bit of everything and ping those stats got [Applause] it he'll throw it on first down getting some heat and the quarterback bought some time but not enough down he goes for the sa that Defender is a matchup nightmare for any offensive line he's got athleticism he's got length he's got flexibility to put it all in display on that side dropping back it's Harry and it'll be incomplete this is some physical pass defense they line up and it is a long Long Way to the sticks from here on Third and long hoping to throw beyond the sticks caught over the middle it's Smith and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down and the warhawks decide to punt it away first time we've seen their punt team this afternoon no return coming he'll call [Applause] [Applause] up wide receiver shows motion they're going to throw it to start the drive makes the grab it's Davis these guys are call the match up guys they're not the biggest guys on the field but they're going to win short and they're going to catch the ball and they make yards after the catch you can tell those are the type of guys in college football that are starting to get maximized and used a lot more than they were in theast that pass is incomplete and they might be fortunate it wasn't knock free for a fumble it'll be third down trying to pick up a first down quarterback making adjustments with his receivers they'll throw on Third and shoulder and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the tur the warhawks send out the punt unit this will be the second time they' to K [Applause] away and the coverage Team all over [Applause] it going to the run to start this second half they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one they're trying to run the ball on first down guys but just nothing doing up front their offensive line got blown up that play there was nowhere for that guy to go didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 scanning the field it's Harry he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down and that last completion left them short of the sticks it's third down nice Patience by the quarterback here working against Zone coverage he was allowing his receiver an opportunity to find that open space in the defense before pulling the trigger how about this running back's ability to get into a pass pattern and get into one down field yeah I like it and I like the offensive coordinator continuing to work the running back in the passing game do more lost one deep down the right side and they dialed up a shot CL but they couldn't make the connection how about this defense really answering the challenge so far today this offense you seen like last week they can throw for touchdowns and big and big chunk plays defense has answered the call played the Deep ball well played disciplin making this offense really earn everything they get tackled almost immediately they're well short of the first down a third and long coming up here he'll just keep slinging it trying to get to it and they got him for the sack I'm the offensive coordinator I'm thinking about shipping this defensive end with running backs I'm leaving my tight ends help this tackle because we cannot block him he's already got two sacks fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way not going to risk a return [Applause] y y off the play fake on first down to throw makes the grab it's Smith they stop him almost immediately short gain there still a little ground to cover to pick up the first this defense is going to have to be careful not only do they have to worry about this guy running the football but they got to keep their eye on him when he runs routes to he is a versatile back safe completion on the screen still running at the 40 they make the stop but not before the screen has hit him for a first down and much more really good execution by this offense a new set of downs after the [Applause] completion they'll leave it with him and he does a really nice job finding open space and making a good gain before the stop is made I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points he's brought down at the 41 yd line it's a pick up of five and enough for a first down and the warhawks are on the Move wants to throw it's Harry feeling some heat he gets rid of it but I don't think think they're going to let him get away with that nope here comes the flag so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty let's see what they've got on second [Applause] down he's looking to throw what can't make the connection the pressure there to miss why was it throwing backwards you've seen this formula work at all levels of football you pressure the quarterback is number start to drop he's not as off that's not where I was if every Journey begins with a step this offense needs to step into a third down convert and the defense gets to the quarterback the warhawks will send out the punt unit fourth time tonight we've seen this guy come on to [Applause] punt he'll bring it back it's Bryant they'll get down okay [Applause] ready wide receiver now comes in motion with Jet Sweep pass finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with the first downs on [Applause] the from the gun running back on the Move coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and you can run with that efficiency on first down man you are doing just that good spot after that seven yd pickup on first down it's second and three back to the ground with the running back and he was able to run through one tackle but still only a modest game and the warhawks come to the line in the hurry [Applause] up quick pass to the left trying to get it to the marker and this def is feeling it as they rip off a big chunk of yardage and they've got it on the 22 yeah and he's been throwing it all over the yard and he's now over 300 yard on the day so been a successful day now 300 yards I don't know Palmer 300 nowadays that's like what back in the day for you that would have been 500 I would have won the Heisman maybe it's a big deal today in college football no doubt listen he's in a rhythm right now he's in a Groove we've seen good decision making he's been playing on time and he's been deadly ACC throwing it and guess what this game is far from he now has 74 yd on the ground and he is well within Striking Distance of a 1200 yd rush in season he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple so an offense youve got to find a way to put six up on the board you know that in this game field goals may not get it done so big time players make big plays in big games who can you rely on right now to get you a touchdown as they get set to snap it just about the the end of the quarter [Applause] we that's the end of the quarter and Arkansas state is on top let's take a quick look at the national rankings to see how this playoff race is shaping [Applause] up one more period to go to see who can make the winning plays and come home with the victory they'd love to pick up this third down and get a fresh set with first and goal looking downfield it's Harry snags it right there I think you need a better play call you got to help your quarterback out a little bit because the throw has got to at least make a cple sticks on that last play You're basically trusting the guy to make a few dudes Miss in order to go pick up that first down I think you need to start being a bit more aggressive here when these third Downs present themselves coach has no choice here the offense has to stay on the field down m M possessions this late fourth down attempt coming touchdown you El Monroe and here they come almost all the way back before that score considering last rights now all of a sudden they're not dead yet up [Applause] l l they'll crank up this drive with the pass that's reeled in it's Griffin really nice pick up there as they have it out to the 44 with a first down the defense needs to have a plan for this guy they weren't ready for that one drag route running all the way across the field the DP just can't stay with them because of his speed and as a result they give up a big one quickly out to the tight end and that defense is there to guide him out of bounds after a short gain right on target with that last pass now it's second and medium I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form tackle the warhawks moving quickly to the line and that's why if you're the offensive coordinator you've got to find as many ways as possible to get this and the quarterback will be slung down back at the 4 three I tell you what if I'm this QB I am ill as a hornet at my offensive line are you kidding me that's the sixth time they put me on the ground dudes will y'all protect me a little bit better please to the air it's [Applause] Harry he looks that one in nicely and they're able to get him on the ground and that was a nice throw by the QB when you see that drag route coming across the field how about the B right on his numbers not high not low where he has to stop his momentum right on the numbers where he can catch it keep running and chew up some yards after the catch gets it out fast he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down great job by the running back on this play it's a big third down and his ability to catch the ball turn around get North make a guy Miss and go move the sticks awesome individual effort touch pass on the Jet Sweep touchdown warhawks they looked finished but they wer still fighting and we're locked up man find your weapons nice job by the quarterback finding the running back out of the back field he catches it and does the rest walks into the end zone okay here we motion from the offense he'll start this drive firing finds his man it's Griffin that's the kind of play that can really get you going as they get it out to the 36 quarterback by himself in the back field looking to move it through the air pocket starts to collapse trying to make magic on the scramble and and the defense holds firm no pick up at all on that play second down coming up he's looking to throw grabbed over the middle it's Smith they make the stop after the catch and still some work to do to pick up that first down third and short from the 44 and we might know if they plan to go for it on fourth down by what they call here they'll try to get it through the air no the ball on third down thanks to that tough hard noos pass defense and now it's Fourth Down they'll leave the offense out there to try to get it past the marker and pick up the first they throwing for it on fourth down he makes the grab and the warhawks get the first down sometimes we don't give enough credit to a receiver knowing exactly where he needs to be on the field and they pick up the first down there yeah and you got to give the receiver credit obviously knowing where that is but the defender needs to know where it is too where is he trying to get that Ball's going to come out quick he didn't really understand where the sticks were and because of that he gives up the first down need to just be a little bit more aware as a defensive game and he's tripped up but not before picking up the first down the warhawks come to the line with a new set of downs easy he wants to throw it again and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second down coming well the quarterback knew he wanted to go to his tight end on that plays a big physical Target but it was the hit on the play that forced the incompletion no gain on first down after the incompletion now second and 10 from the [Applause] 40 to the air it's Harry coming after it he's going to take off just a Oney gain leaves him with third and nine well great job there by the defense because they weren't able to get him sacked right away but you saw the coverage in the back end nor the quarterback to throw the football didn't get the sack obviously you don't get the negative play but you also don't give up a big one you're feeling pretty good about where you are right now in this dri and the defense able to drag him down but not before they'll recycle that down marker this quarterback is such a playmaker and his arm is what makes him so special could this be the game that sends him to New York City for the Heisman Trophy he's now got over 450 passing Ys now on First and 10 from the 29 he's looking to throw it quarterback moving just gets rid of the football nobody to throw it to it'll be second down well it's the fourth quarter and you got to be so careful as a quarterback when you're thrown it over the middle field right now because these windows are really small he's very lucky that last one was not picked off he'll try to do it himself he is brought down but man what a job to find some Running Room and move the chains man these are these are killers right late in the game in the fourth quarter you're getting to the quarterback but he does such a great job scrambling around when you do this you get extra first downs you start to wear those defensive linemen out so late in the game this could pay off great job getting the first down able to get just a few before course sliding to avoid the hit nice job by the QBs s back in the pocket you can tell he wants to throw the football go through his progressions nothing home take off and slide I love the slide at the end don't take a big shot and he's brought to the ground but not before he gets up for the first down well the offense knew what they needed to get that first down so they dial up the running play and they get just enough to keep the drive alive and a touchdown here would not only give them the lead but in the fourth quarter that ramps up the pressure he bullies his way all the way down to the 5 yd line they're strong and they're strong defensive tackles they're strong they're such big jokers in the Middle where they just lock out those offensive linemen and running backs listen they don't have much of a chance when you got that 300 plus pound guy grabbing you around the shoulder pad you touchdown to El Monro and inside a minute to go and they've got the lead yeah good news bad news scenario I guess good news is you're going to score this offense looks like they can be explosive and they can light up the scoreboard bad news though David they' got a lot to clean up on the defensive side of the ball yeah and welcome to college football nowadays right this is how it works a ton of points defens so they got the game-winning field goal I guess that's annoying scored with 46 seconds left and still defense couldn't get a stop that's rough Aon had three touchdowns one pick 459 yards did a little better on the drown game 80 yards for Smith three touchdowns Smith had another big receiving Dame 177 two touchdowns Brit had a touchdown 65 yards Davis had 107 that's yeah that's rough I don't I don't know what to say but we get Kendall blage so keen and Jerome is in the top three he's reached top five and this right tackle is also reached top five and we're first on that right end yeah Hunter Smith gets offensive player of the week again in the Sun Belt oh he got National too well we're 4 and seven heading into the final week really rough string of uh three games here ended up being kind of winnable couldn't pull through but that'll do it for this episode thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one
