"We're On A Slippery Slope" Labour's 'Nanny State' Pub Smoking Ban SLAMMED

today starma outed in the Sun newspaper the exent Jack elam's column we had him on just now no cigarettes and alcohol obviously the Oasis angle there but basically secret government plans to ban any of us from having a in a Beer Garden in an outside restaurant in open air spaces at clubs or maybe next to a football stadium are in their infancy but apparently the government believed that by telling you that you can't do that anymore that's going to save the NHS not dealing with obese people or maybe a knife Epic no you're not allowed to smoke you're not allowed to write anything on Twitter or X or you're not allowed to we allowed to protest the world's gone nuts we're delighted our next guest uh Deputy commment editor of the Daily Telegraph Annabelle denim has been a while good afternoon how are you good afternoon Jeremy I'm very well thanks how are you I'm all right I'm not sure I'm enjoying my life in starmageddon Nanny State um I mean extraordinarly good article from Jack elom in the sun today what what do you make of this Annabelle I'm I'm really I'm really strong on this I believe that we're going to get to a point where you're gonna have absolutely no choice this is this is interventionist Nanny stated it's most obvious isn't it it is indeed look I don't think we should be altogether surprised that labor are picking up the tobacco and Vapes bill after the Tories were forced to shove it when rishy sunak pulled off that political Master choke of calling an early general election that most of his MPS weren't prepared for this is a government that's run by a self-proclaimed socialist um starma has definitely got an authoritarian streak we saw that during the riots uh earlier this month uh and of course we've seen it with things like the decision to lift the higher education freedom of speech act said that's been uh repealed um you know and so on and so forth so iide it's altogether surprising but like you Joy I feel very strongly about it I think we're on a slippery slope now at the bottom of which is a very existence indeed where our lives are dictated by the public health establishment by nanny statists who seem to believe that they're able to make decisions better for us than we are ourselves who seem to believe that we need to be protected from the mistakes that we might make um and seem to believe that we're not capable of making informed adult decisions based on the you know as I say the information that we have we make tradeoffs we decide to have that extra glass of wine and we decide to have a cigarette in a big Garden or have the extra donut because it gives us pleasure and ultimately what's wrong with that and you talked about obesity earlier Jeremy I Jeremy I think there's a slight problem we have in this country and it's because we have an NHS a nationalized socialist healthc care system where which is funded through General taxation where when the NHS is in trouble our immediate response is always to change our own behaviors people can't get too fat lest it place too much pressure on the NHS people can't can't smoke they can't drink they can't enjoy their lives because to do so might put too much pleasure on the NHS and of course we saw that during the lockdowns it was all about saving the NHS regardless of the cost of the economy or the infringement our civil liberties um but no I think you know it's difficult to see a future may 50 100 years from now where cigarettes tobacco hasn't been banned outright the Tories had their gradual ban now labor want to toughen up that legislation and I imagine they'll do so with very little opposition indeed it's interesting isn't it an infringement of our rights as human beings to make our own decisions or you know we're going to be told what's right for us because we don't know but I think there's another issue here and I thought Nigel farage was spot on I love the clip because he didn't let Julia Harley Brewer say anything but he pointed out that this is an absolute massive kick in the teeth for the hospitality industry that suffered so much during Co covid and many landlords heard later today have have spent thousands of pounds decking the The Gardens of their pubs out with screens and netting and Tents and all so people can sit out there and eat and and I just worry as you quite rightly said that that we're going to get to a point where we are told what is good for us we are told what is bad for us we are told what we can do and what we can't do I'm not sure that to me sounds like a democracy Annabelle no well it's governing by experts isn't it by by the health establishment by the K Joys um and our freedoms are ciled with every Nanny State measure that's introduced however much it may have been introduced with the best of intentions you're right that this is another blow to the hospitality industry it's a blow to pubs that are responsible for the employment of around 900,000 people billions of pounds of gross value added to the UK economy and you know pubs have had a very difficult time of it uh recently thousands of pubs closing every year knocked sideways by lockdown restrictions and you know wasn't just the fact that we were forced into our homes it wasn't just the fact that PS were forced to close it was actually the fact that they were closed then they were open then they were closed again and they were bringing in food and alcohol and so on because they thought that the government was pursuing one course of action only for it to change its mind almost overnight and then they'd have to throw all of the food and the drink away it was that uncertainty that compounded the problems that they were facing during lockdown really we ought to be you know celebrating the hospitality and Industry and doing all that we can to support it um not least when it's hard to see what public health impact a ban on smoking and beer gardens will really have you know I I just think it's all part of this I'm going to appeal to several parts of whatever person supports him in the early days I have no idea but I have to say I mean I wanted you view briefly um I look at the last two months I said to everybody this week um I'm I'm astounded that so many people text an email and they say Ann this is shocking this is absolutely shocking what do you mean it's shocking socialism you admit to a 22 billion black hole and within three weeks you've given your your Chums in several unions 15 and 20% pay Rises which sends a great whacka all here we go who else wants one you come along we'll deal with that and there comes another one you know we're going to release prisoners we've screwed the pensioners already there's going to be a hike in fuel Duty which will be incredibly painful and difficult Asylum is running a mock and is no better off and and whether it's closer ties to the European Union or I don't know my my big thing about him was the free trousers and suits and glasses because don't tell me lectured us all about cronyism for for weeks and months I'm not not not because I'm not a starma supporter because I believe he needed a chance I don't think it's been a particularly auspicious start do you no I don't and you know there's only so long that the labor government can blame the previous conservative administr for the problems that this country is facing now it's certainly true that no government has balanced the books in the last 20 years it's certainly true that uh the public sector grew enormously over uh the last 14 years that the tax burden under the Tories was set to hit a 70-year half they cre a vast number of problems um that much is true but you know how much labor we going to be able to ride on that not least as you say Jeremy when they are Shoring up support from their core base aren't they they are um bunging billions towards public sector workers and you know people are all too aware of it the productive side of our economy can only be clobbered so much before the country is in real deep trouble um and that's before you get to the nanny state ISM that's before you get to the infringements on freedom of expression and you know the various other other policies that labor are pursuing Ed Milan's approach to Net Zero I think very damaging indeed and setting up a g GB energy a state owned Energy company for absolutely no reason at all as far as I can tell they're like they're like a committee and a body in a quango don't they can I just ask you briefly I mean it's interesting his approval rating is at the lowest I always keep saying this every day the view from the cheap seats is is is massively different than when you're in power and he will and you made the point brilliantly he will for a long time I don't know how long say well I've been 14 years of mess and there was no money I I I remember during the election campaign you know this because you're in the same business yeah we're in perder we can't show uh you know you should vote here we have to be very straight down the middle just remember every day Annabelle thinking to myself you cannot promise everybody everything to make their lives better unless you give an idea of how you're going to pay for that and all the people who got Jew but let's make the point they got less votes than they did under Corbin so you know if 34% of the country vote for you that means two-thirds of this country didn't want you that says something about our electoral system but it's just stuff being sneaked in that wasn't in the manifesto cronyism pay Rises to his mates all of that I mean listen to this from Mandy is there nothing anyone can do about this starma fell before he causes yet more outrage we see him in two months to be sinking as a country and I and I you know just I I I want to scream to people and go what did you expect there's no money tree there's no there's no perfect answer and I am not in any way in any way sticking up for the shambles that the Tory government was at the end and actually it makes me even more mad because their incompetence right their total incompetence has allowed this to be foed upon the British public no that's right I think in the end the British electorate had just had enough of the Tories they had enough of the they had enough of the uh incompetence the fact that they appeared completely rudderless the fact that they had abandoned conservative principles almost all together and people just simply wanted change and they thought how bad can K be and you know the labor leader the prime minister's mvar strategy ultimately worked he said very little deliberately during the election campaign and I think many people were lulled into a full sense of security that really all aor would do would continue with the Tory strategy of managed Decline and unfortunately you know it's turned out not to be the case and that they are pursuing a much more socialist agenda than anybody was really prepared for and unfortunately it's going to get worse now you know you can argue that K St is trying to get the unpopular things out of the way as soon as possible painful budget uh but you know the problem of Jeremy Jeremy as far as I'm concerned is that actually some of the measures that are popular when you poll the public things wealth tax that may come later that would actually be even more more damaging to our economy that could lead to even more wealth and capital flight and you know all sorts of problems that you know those are going to come later so anyone who's hoping that this is the AAR that uh things will only go up from the October budget I you know I think might be in for a nasty shock couldn't agree Mar it's lovely and I mean that to have on Deputy commentator comment editor I should say the daily Annabelle Denham thank you so much to for
