MLB New York Mets vs San Diego Padres FULL GAME - 25.08.2024

well if you're a young fan and you come to a game and you want to Salute Your Hero you bring a sign and you never know what might happen if you bring your sign to the game you might actually get to meet your hero how cool is that [Music] wow all he's doing is making people happy that's what happens when you miss your smile on and off the field that's lineup brought to you by Acura pet Alonzo hits third for just the first time since April 30th JD Martinez drops to the six hole for just the second time this season as the Mets will have eight right-hand hitters in the lineup today against the veteran left-hander Martin Perez well we talked about it before the Padres are 4 and0 uh in his four starts um pitched against the Mets earlier this year in a loss gave up three runs and five and 2/3 when he was a a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the FanDuel defense uh some changes capano behind the plate Donovan Solano playing Third Base big miscue from Machado yesterday McCoy Bogarts and konorth in there arise has got the day off profar Merill and Bryce Johnson complete the Outfield in their L Lefty hitting against Lefty lineup Manny Machado is dhing today so his Bat will be there if not his glove Francisco Lindor coming off a two home run five RBI performance last night the Mets top spot in the batting order now has 90 RBI this year a lot of that was nmo early in the year before Lindor took it over but the 90 RBI out of the leadoff spot are the most in a season ever for the Mets and it's only August 25th and we have a fifth of the season to go door always nods uh to the opposing manager before he starts his game and that bat first pitch of the day by Perez is on the outside corner of strike and we're underway the DOR got good career numbers against Perez seven for 17 and you see there 23 game on base streak which matches the longest active streak in the game and he fouls off the curveball and it's 0 and2 yeah tied with Nolan aado who has picked it up a little bit for St Lewis there is quickly ahead o and two and he comes inside and Lindor lines it over the head of Solano into left field for a lead off hit and so Lindor just keeps on raking got an 02 pitch inside and pulled it Forward leadoff single fast ball paint away change up paint away decided to surprise him inside can't surprise Lindor right now the target is middle of the plate not sorry inside corner inside Hits the Target and he pulls those hands in still strong enough for a base hit to left maybe not up quite as much as he had hoped and Lindor is aboard and now Mark Vientos oh for his last eight but he Skies one to center field Jackson Merill waits for it to come down and that's the first out of the day so the entos swinging at the first pitch flies out one out and one on bravs lost today the Diamondbacks won again at six straight they complete a sweep at Fenway Park Arizona was down 4 nothing today AIO Suarez had a three-run home R in the six to put him in front and they won s to five Mets will be in Arizona on Tuesday night here's pet Alonzo hitting third for the first time since April Lindor a big lead but moving back to the bag as Perez threw that ball home and it misses for ball one I think he takes that big lead against the lefties to try to induce the throw over there to take a Peak at the move of Martin Perez he is not obliged so far Pete's never had a hit against Perez 0 for 12 in his career and he takes one just inside couple of close pitches two and0 Andy Fletcher the crew chiefs is the home plate umpire today Harris is very hard to run against only three steals against him all year and he misses high with the curveball and now he's behind on Alonzo 3 and0 Randon nmo hitting cleanup is on Deck opposing base dealers are three for seven with Perez on the mound this year no pickoffs but he does have nine in his career Pete swings and skies one to Center didn't get it and Merill waits for it to come down so Lonzo swinging 3 and0 had a base h on a three-oh pitch earlier in this series but this time comes up empty Wild Card Standings brought to you by cor light Diamond Backs won today Braves lost vs can not only pull within a game and a half of the Braves but they can pull within three and a half of the Padres if they can win this game today as we mentioned in the open the Padres have not lost a series since before the All-Star break when they lost two out of three to Atlanta there's the snap throw by Perez and Lindor gets back so one M way move for Lindor big move but he was leaning towards first base the reason it's hard to run on peras he's got a slide step to the plate nmo still trying to fight his way out of what has been a big second half slump he's the only Lefty in the lineup today today against Perez since the allstar break 30 games for Brandon he's hitting 159 with a 542 Ops one for eight so far in this series and Perez comes inside capisan with a snap throw and Lindor able to get back ball on a strike to nmo osan's got a great arm he does an accurate throw here to cronenworth L cabasan A Atlanta area kid there's a second throw over by Perez D had to get a a chest full of dirt to get back in time one and one to NEOS darling Mars would be next and nmo pulls one on the ground right at the second base with Bogarts and that retires aside a lead off hit but Lindor never moves no score in the middle of the first it's the Lefty Jake cronenworth who sat against the Lefty yesterday is in there today against kintana and Machado dhing Pro far has been very good when he's let off this year for San Diego see katana's numbers on the season 4 and A2 ER that's risen because of the last four starts opponent's batting average 247 is high and the home runs allow really has been the issue for Jose jerkson profar in 14 games leading off this year is sitting 382 he having a great season overall leading the national league and on base percentage now with 385 and canan's first pitch is fouled off on a first pitch fast ball nothing in one canana pitched one of his best games of the year against the Padres back in June when the Met swept the series at City Field six Innings one run two hits and a 5 to1 win and trying to get back to that kind of form having trouble hearing the pitch comom and we have our first malfunction of the day after one pitch I think they need to find a battery that holds this charge a little bit yeah hello hello please 25 that's that's funny I know does anybody carry quarters anymore cue the uh cu the Jim cochi music operator all right well that's all straightened out now Canan can throw his second Pitch Pro for a switch hitter hitting much better right-handed this year 326 from this side and he takes the fast ball inside a ball on a strike so you've watched Kint now for a year and a half Ronnie what do you see different now compared to the way he was pitching in July I think he just got away from his strength scary you know he went through a period of time where his curveball was probably his best pitch when he made that stretch of eight starts where his ER was six and one the curveball has not been as sharp and I think his strength is always down in the strike zone down in the way to the right-handed hitters and the ball has been up just like that pitch right there I mean to Terren is calling for that pitch to be on the knees on the outside corner and it was middle up so it's the misses have been what you don't usually get from canana I mean he had a stretch like this in May when he has struggled it's been a lot of walks and a lot of home runs curveball misses L away I guess they called the clock violation when his pitch C was not working so they've got the count at three and two they give you a pass when your pitch comom is the problem and profar fouls off a high fast ball Donovan Solano on deck and then Xander Bogarts for the [Music] Padres again the 3-2 and proar fouls back another high fast ball you know there two ways to go Gary if you're a pitcher is the is to add or subtract and kintana is at a place in his career where wherever he is in between what he wants to throw subtracting taking a little off is the best option not adding and he went to the change up and gets the soft ground ball Vientos with the quick throw not nearly in time to get profile so canana made a good pitch went off speed but soft contact prod loses an infield hit for profile that's just bad luck there defense brought to you Mets defense brought to you by Genesis boy Lindor and gasius when they're up the middle magic usually happens as did in game one Lis Toren is behind the play today Alvarez has got the day off well not the whole day off he could play at some point nmo Bader and Marte Bader had a home run uh yesterday's ball game there's Donovan Solano with the leadoff man profar board and he takes it back back door curveball first a strike Solano 0 for three last night getting his second straight start with the Mets throwing leanders and why not he's been the best Padre hitter against lefties this is a team that has struggled in general against left-handed pitching 275 team batting average against righties just 243 against lefties for far seven Steel Stills in nine tries and Solano fouls back a fast ball and it's one and two well when Arizona and San Diego seemingly were winning every single day you first thought well they can't stay that hot well San Diego has not stayed that hot but Arizona has Arizona is now 24 and six in their last 30 games and that's with three of their best everyday players on the sidelines curveball hits slowly canana gets to this one he'll go to second and gets the force there he thought about not throwing to second but then he saw that profar was still far away and he went to a glacius to get the first out veteran move there he's under control the entire time he just took a peak and he knew he had time to go get him that's not going to be not great base running by profile as slowly as that ball was hit there should not have been a play at second base yeah not a great secondary lead so Solano who does not have nearly as much speed as a board and here's Xander Bogarts who's 3 for2 in this series so watch profar steps back to first base and then not the greatest hustle for profar in getting the second base good fast ball for a strike and its own one to Bogarts I do have to say he's had a bulky knee he's been playing with for most of the year so but he ran hard on that base hit well when they smell hits as a double play ball Lindor to glacius and on to first to double up Bogarts and that gets canana through the opening inning 15 ground ball double plays behind canana this yearz with the Pirates but s getting injected into a pennant race he has responded well of course the Pirates were in it for a good portion of the year but have fallen off the charts over the last month or so another former pirate at the plate Starling Marte Marte has had a hit in all five games since coming off the injured list Perez misses up with the fast ball and it's one and one Marte then JD Martinez and Jose glacius against the 3 three-year-old Perez team Perez was an All-Star two years ago he's had a couple of different stints with the Texas Rangers he's bounced around a bunch but he's had himself a nice career 88 career wins and the breaking ball hit to short one hopper grabbed by McCoy and he thide Mars they one [Applause] away step up to the plate with Mets connect the New York Mets loyalty program join now for free at Mets connect.com to earn points and enjoy exclusive benefits Pirates at a high point today a walk-off win two- run Homer by yasmani grandal in the bottom of the night they beat the Reds 4 to three the Reds like the Pirates have been fading with JD swinging and missing in a curveball and it's nothing in one it's been a rough go for Martinez the last 18 games just 9 for 60 it's a 150 average and a 567 Ops and dropped to sixth in the order today for just the second time this year the alarming thing for JD is that uh his Chase percentage has gone up he's chasing a lot of breaking balls and changeups off the plate Martin Perez even though he doesn't have good numbers against him he should be a good Mark for JD who likes the ball down and change up off the plate and it's two and one Martin against Martinez the curve ball stays outside it's three and one Jose glaus the on Deck batter the Cubs had a chance to go over 500 today for the first time since May but they're down 7 to2 to Miami in the ninth that is Adam Aller pitching for Miami today pitched well and JD puts the a in Martinez and has a base hit and the Mets have a one- out base runner in the second and JD snaps an 0 for 11 stretch yeah it's a good matchup for Martinez gets ahead in the count that fast ball drifted over the inside corner and that patented Inside Out swing produces a base hit to the left of Bogarts so one out and one on now Jose glacius who's hitting 3 90 against lefties this year the first pitch change up has a flailing nothing in one glacius has the most played appearances against Martin Perez among the Mets in the lineup today he's five for 21 with a home run against him it's been remarkable to me about a glacius you know it's one thing to come to a new team and provide a spark but he hasn't relented no yeah you know I mean Luis Terren is batting behind him in the order he provided a spark when he first arrived but you know his numbers have come back to earth but not a glacius he's still in the stratosphere reminded me a little bit of 2006 Jose Valentine you didn't know what you're going to get from him and the next thing you know he put together six great months of a season boy he was so valuable to that team Martinez at first with one out onew coming and he rolls one over down to third salano goes to Second for one no way they're going to double up eaus so they get the five4 fielders choice for the second out do you remember in 2006 who the Mets opening day second basement was young kid right yep Anderson herandez very good I'm getting better at this Mets trivia I've been working hard on it well you know you th those are out of your dark era you were you were there then I was emerging you were with us you were uh you were like um the pupa coming out of the Cocoon that's right here's Luis Terren who began his big league career here in San Diego Toren played for the Padres in 2017 and 2019 a total of 70 games did not produce much for them and they moved him along but the Mets have gotten the best of teren this year although he has cool down in August just 3 for 22 glacius at first with two out and Terren chases a change up and it's 0 and2 is Terren a rule five draft e off the Yankees I think he was it makes sense he played a lot of games that year for the Padres then went to the miners the following year [Music] parz ahead of him o and two and Tren again chases a change up and so Perez has his first strike out and an end to the top of the second no score in San [Music] Diego there terrible news for Brett batty who was probably going to be the September call up for the Mets on the position side but he's got a broken index finger got hurt on the check swing didn't even look like it bothered him when it first happened but 3 days later now after it struck him on Thursday they have diagnosed him with a broken index finger and going to take him out for most of the rest of the season Andy Machado dhing today leading off in the home second and then that sparked speculation about who will be the Mets September call up they've got DJ Stewart still in AAA so he's certainly a Poss possibility but there are some intriguing choices involving some of the younger players it's driven to the Gap and left center field machado's got himself an extra base hit and Manny cruises into second base with a lead off double 24th double of the year for Machado boy this is a beautiful swing from Machado who loves the ball middle of the plate in and up if you're going to go inside you got to come inside off the plate so canana just missed and Machado did [Music] not so a leadoff base runner for the second straight inning for the Padre's and here's Jake cronenworth he's sitting just 203 against left-handed pitching this year sat yesterday against David Peterson in there today against kintana and he shows bunt that's an interesting call there pitches a strike you see his splits Stark difference in his Effectiveness against lefties and righties this year Borth one for nine in this series and he hits a comebacker canana checks Machado and throws out cworth one away so who might the position player be that it's called up the guy I have my eye on is Drew Gilbert yeah that's a that's a good call Gary you know the thing is is what do you need on the bench the Mets have a pretty good bench now because of that cycle of outfielders that they have so they got a lot of good bats coming off the bench I always like September call of some speed some defense to help you and Gilbert's hit three home runs in his last five games so he might be bringing that as well now granted that's um in St Lucy on rehab cuz he's missed half the season because of injury but if he has another good week going into September you have to think he'll be on the radar Jackson Merill two for2 in this series he's hitting just 216 against lefties and he chases the fast ball away and it's one and [Applause] one the other piece for the Mets is that Paul Blackburn went on the injured list today not surprising after he hit that got that comebacker off his hand on Friday night ground ball down to First and Alonzo will make the play no toss the shoted the third two out no contemplation um so the Mets have brought wascar bronzo Bond back for the bullpen at the moment but then the question is what they do with their rotation and they have the off day on Monday the big question is the last game in Arizona right you got manah and srino each lined up on an extra day rest Tuesday Wednesday do you bring back David Peterson on regular rest for a Day game Thursday in Arizona or do you save you push him back and give him the extra day and plug Tyler McGill into that start against Arizona it's a it's a intriguing question because uh you know Peterson is going so good right now you don't really want to alter too many things I mean in a in the best of all possible worlds right now you'd like to have Peterson against the more potent team in Arizona agreed and then let McGill come back into the rotation and Pitch against the white size on Sunday September 1st right when you can make the call up so or you can plug him in on Friday and then everybody else gets an extra day rest would be just Peterson pitching on regular rest so we'll see what they decide to do they've got a few days to try and figure that out it looks as though it's going to be mcil though I I don't think there really any other candidates right now to take that start you know when I have a hot pitcher I don't want to change what he's been doing three and 0 to compano and he takes a strike now that being said anybody would like to pitch against the white sock right now well I I think that the fact that it's a day game on Thursday I think has has an impact and that Peterson just came off his two longest starts of the season so I think they might be inclined to give him the extra day but from a strategic penet race standpoint you'd certainly like to have Peterson who's been arguably your best starter over the last couple of months to go up against the Diamondbacks who are the highest scoring team in the National League 3 and2 to campasano after canana fell behind him 3 and0 and the curveball fouled off I think sometimes Gary we overthink this you know I mean the way we think about pitchers starting pitchers now there always a reason that you can find for giving him an extra day you know he's uh over 85 Innings you know the limit his is always a reason you can find just keep it simple he's pitching great now now put him out there every fifth day gasan almost low bridges Machado so sharply eluded the ball girl well the Yankees got two more home runs from Aaron judge today he now has 51 for the season Mar thump the Rockies 10 to3 judge his first home run came in the first inning he's at 18 home runs in the first inning tapaso pops it up and that ties the Major League record that A-Rod set when he was in Texas laaus scatches the popup and Canan able to work around the lead off double by Machado keeping scoreless after two ticket purchases to any remaining Mets home game this is a limited time offer that ends Tuesday September 3rd so go now to mets.com fees restrictions apply Harrison Bader homered yesterday snapped an 0 for 20 stretch with that long ball in the eighth inning last night now facing Martin Perez leading off in the third and swings it high fast ball and misses it's one onone biggy's got the sunglasses on it's bright day no Marine layer no got to keep Iggy's eyes sharp I mean four perfect days here but every day is perfect here maybe if you show up in December you might get a great day but they don't play baseball in December yet swinging a miss and it's two and two to biter this is the Home Run we were talking about before just launched off Gillespie by Bader and he Skies this one to left this one will stay in the ballpark profar started back now comes in and retires Bader one away Martin Perez like Michael King who we saw last night with the Padres is a guy who has always relied on his Sinker a lot and has been a big ground ball pitcher but not so much yeah we saw the king's ground ball rate had gone down and so has Perez's the Padres when they traded for Martin Perez wanted him to throw his breaking ball more so that has played into the mix where before he was really Sinker change up pitcher he's got a good change up today first time through Francisco Lindor single to left his first time up now 8 for 18 against Perez and 6 for 14 in this series BS back a high curve ball and it's two and one you know the one thing a four game series gives you as you and I sit here in this booth you really get a good feel uh for the opposition and the padr are a solid club they're starting pitching and relief pitching buttoned up let's say that their defense is good not great and their offense offensive players they don't have the depth of the lineup of some clubs but well they'll be a little deeper if they ever get Fernando tatis back in there that's a big big loss I mean they're covering for him with the likes of David caralon and Bryce Johnson who were nice players but they're not Fernando ta yeah and he took some batting practice in this series you darish threw 54 pitches off the mound today yeah when he's ready to go their pitching becomes really really good Cho toward third tough play for Solano coming in the GL and toss that in time to get Lindor nice play by Solano against the speed of door two down that was very similar to the base hit that profar had profar got out of the box a little better than Lindor and that's why Lindor was out at first Francisco has a little bigger swing than proar so it keeps him in the Box just for second longer it's always hard for those right-and batters when they take the big swing to then get launched toward first base martos flly out the center his first time up and he bounces one toward third off the change up and it's nothing and two remember we c talk a couple of days ago about Cleveland and their lead shrinking CU their offense had gone away they have found the answer big Christmas yeah John keny Noel homered again today and they beat the Rangers 4-2 Noel has 12 home runs he's averaging a home run every 9.3 at bats which is second in the majors behind Aaron judge it's Maguire like in his Heyday John keny Noel big Christmas what a great nickname and he's big it's like 63 250 Guardians with their win today stretch their lead Kansas City getting lambasted by the Phillies today that was Seth lugo's start he gave up five runs in just five innings and the Phillies are up 113 in the ninth the entos drives one to right and that's down for a base hit so Vientos taking the curveball the other way and the Mets have their third hit against Perez and that snaps an 0 for n for Vientos the approach against Martin Perez from right-handed hitter should be the other way most of the pitches you're going to get from him as a right-handed hitter are going to be away in the strike zone whether it's the Sinker or the change so now here's Alonzo flly out to Center on a 3-oh pitch his first time up it was only the third time this year that Pete had put a three-oh pitch into play twice in this series base it up the middle earlier in the series on a 3-oh pitch and hits the curve ball off the end of the bat to Bogarts plays that spinner throws out Alonzo to retire the side a hit in one left still no score in San [Applause] Diego moving out lot of Navy personnel out the game today and Naval band play the national anthem at the naval parachute team jump into the stadium it's big Navy town you know my ship has sailed on this road trip Gary I'm GNA let you take it to Arizona well we're not selling any ships into the desert Bryce Johnson will lead off in the home third in a scoreless game Johnson the switch hitting outfielder drops down a bun canana pounces onto quickly low throw but Alonzo Scoops it out in time one out it's two times now batters have attempted to bunt against kintana and despite this slow throw he would be one of the pitchers I would not bunt against he's a really good Fielder quick feet gets picked up by Pete there on the short hop so Johnson retired one out now Mason McCoy he's made a nice impression in this series his first four starts in the big leagues have come in this series quite four for 11 to start his major leag League career or at least his San Diego career he played briefly last year for Toronto I think he had won it bat but never started a game for the Blue Jays but now pressed into service with the injury to Hung Kim who's been out this entire series with a shoulder injury good high fast ball by canana to get out on McCoy one and two lot of soft contact on both sides against these crafty lefties Sunday afternoon ronning no night game the night before just seems as though the offense just don't get rolling until a little later on after that third cup of coffee kicks in that's right two2 to McCoy in the Curve ball hit foul down the right side and McCoy lifts this one to right should be easy for Marte has to side sadle though with the sun and he makes the catch so it did not end up being easy for Marte who battled the sun all the way but wrestled it to a draw two out well it was difficult in right field in yesterday's game the 540 start but looks worse here today as Marte makes the play sun sets behind the third base stands here so right field is very much the sunfield two out of nobody on now jerx in profar who had an infield hit leading off the first and he hits a two Hopper to Short stop lindor's got it and for far is thrown out to end the inning so canana has his first one two three inning of the day keeps it scoreless after [Applause] three Alvarez's walkoff home run against the Orioles that's have had plenty of OMG to celebrate during this week Jesse Winker provided the heroics on Wednesday in the final game of the home with his first home run as a met Lis srino pitching a shut out Francisco Lindor right in the middle of everything OMG gred nmo leads off as we go to the fourth in a scoreless game nmo grounded out to second base his first time up Marte and Martinez to follow against Martin Perez who's given up a single in each of the first three Innings but nothing more and he misses away with a cutter and it's a ball on a strike Martine Perez making his fifth start since coming over from the Pirates and a deal for a minor league left-hander and so far it's been a good deal for San Diego they needed the Boost in their starting pitching with u darish away from the team for personal reasons but darish is now back just like profar AJ PR seems to covet guys that he's known before he knew Martin Perez when he was over there with [Applause] Texas Martin spent some time with the Red Sox where he was teammates with Xander Bogarts it's been around the block inside and nmo just barely avoided getting hit two balls two strikes Bron has far better numbers against lefties this year than he does against righties he lifts that one fouled down the left side chasing after it Solano but it's in the crowd and Nimo will get another life Starling Marte Waits on Deck seventh pitch of the atat Nemo and the curveball misses down and he held the swing three and two when the Mets faced Perez as a pirate back in April in New York they got three runs against him in five and 2/3 including home runs by Lindor and Marte and Marte Waits on Deck it's great overhead shot curve ball drilled to right field but it stays up for Bryce Johnson who makes the grab that's a nice looking at back from nmo but sometimes you can't legislate where you hit it week night Shirley Chan and Cory Chambers get you updated on all the latest news the Moose Mark maloes covers the local sports scene and of course Mr G has the weather it's the Pix 11 News at 10 so here's Marte grounded out his first time up and he hits another ground ball that spins toward McCoy who handles it and quickly there are two [Applause] out Mason McCoy reminds me of that throw with that little three4 throw to first base with Billy Alman and Bill was the short stop for this Padre's organization in the 80s it's a little like Nick Ahmed there you go that's a good call too by the way I think it's still out on the the open market after the Dodgers let him go JD Martinez who had a base hit to Right Center his first time up JD snapped an 0 for 11 stretch with that base hit perz misses just outside with the change up ball on the strike that's what we're seeing this afternoon there's still a place in the game for guys like Martin Perez and Jose canana who can't chase velocity do it with intelligence and precision now look at the game David Peterson had last night he only struck out two in seven to the third had a great game Martinez drives one deep to Center back goes Merill looking up and it's out of here JD Martinez puts the Mets in front his 15th home run of the year and Martinez breaks the ice it's one- nothing New York so JD dropped to sixth in the order for just the second time this year had a base at his first time up and now he drives one over the 396 mark for a home run that puts the Mets in front you know Gary we said before his first that bat that this should be a good pitcher for him to face even though he's 11 one for 11 coming into this game Martin Perez throws a lot of pitches down and Martinez covers down that's in three home runs last night and now Martinez puts him on the board with a long ball that ball thigh high and just a shot out to Center deep virtually every every home run JD Martinez hits is to the right of center field it's just uncanny I mean we've seen some great opposite field home run hitters over the year like theas certainly was one of those but not somebody who does it as consistently as JD Martinez does I mean he just really doesn't even consider pulling the ball one of the things he that ball is hit at 111 one of the things he tries to work on and he's really pushing this down to taught this to Mark Vientos as well in batting practice they just work on staying inside the ball the entire time and that keeps you in center field or in right center field well it's something the entos has certainly taken to heart and it's something that Francisco Alvarez needs to work on more not everybody can beat Pete Alonzo 3-2 coming and gasius whacks it foul if you decide to become a pull hitter it opens your game up to a lot of holes for a pitcher to be able to go after if you are a guy that hits to all Fields less holes and gasius takes it high ball four and the Mets have a two two out base runner first walk given up by Perez who had walked a total of only four batters in his first four starts for San Diego by the way for JD Martinez that's his first bases empty home run in more than two months last six home runs he had 19 RBI on those six including a couple of grand slams but this one two out and nobody on got the Mets in front in this game and both these teams have excelled when getting the early lead particularly lately for the bats they had struggles early in the season holding on to early leads but not over the last 3 months so acius at first with two out and now Luis teren who struck out his first time up it's the only strike out for Perez so far today as he got teren to chase a couple of change UPS out of the strike zone and he drills that one down the left field line but it'll hook and go foul I think maybe Luis gets a little over anxious playing in this ballp part I think sometimes when you go to the plate as a hitter you just decide you're going to swing first pitch and that's what it was there for Lis C Ball misses down a ball on a strike Martine Perez threw only 45 pitches to get through the first three Innings 22 pitches already in this inning started with nmo who had a long at bat before lining out this time tren's able to lay off the change up out of the strike zone two balls in a strike can see has getting underneath that change up this inning eaus very short lead at first against that Perez slide step doesn't use it this time and eaus goes and the throw by Capas was high now how did he know that Perez wasn't going to use the slide step that time it's called the uh oh how did he know he wasn't going to use the slide step I don't know I mean I think he just decided he was going to go or at least when he picked his leg up and didn't slide step it maybe that's what made him go maybe it's his third stolen base of the year didn't have a big lead but picked the right time to go now it's two and two to Terren trying to pick up the runner from second and he takes the curveball in the dirt compano swats it down and it's three and two last 3-2 pitch he threw a fast ball inside to walk a glaz yes I think with the base empty you're going to see another change up here to torren Harrison Bader would be next and Terren rolls over that change up and bounces it foul three and two this change up has been hit hard this year again the 3-2 and Tren fights off that cutter and they are really making Martin Perez work in this inning an 8 pitch at bat for nmo seven pitch ADV bat for glacius and Toren is going to see an eighth pitch in this ADV bad as well 27 pitches deep into this fourth inning glacius at second with two out and Terren takes the walk 3-2 change up Miss so a very different kind of ADV bat for Terren after Chasing incessantly in his first at bat he coaxes a second straight walk now from Perez and a chance for Harrison Vader with two men on sometimes your best at bat is just keep the line moving don't swing it in anything out of the strike zone and that's what teren did then Ruben nebla now coming up to speak to his veteran left-hander and Reuben walking as slowly as he is able this is about giving his veteran pitcher a break these days with the pitch clock you can get so sped up and as a veteran pitcher sometimes that can catch up to youate late in these Innings looks like Hing is getting up a for the Padres the Padre's added another pitcher today Lake Bacher what a name I don't know where on the globe Lake Bacher is located it's not near Coronado but now he's in the Padres bulpin there's beautiful sand very colic lot of bikes pedicab no business right now Brian hoing throwing in the bullpen he was very impressive in the first game of the series former Marlin now Bader who flyed out to left his first time up after homering last night eaus at second Terren at first with two down Bader takes first pitch fast ball outside for ball one what I'm surprised that is that we were told before that Perez was throwing a lot more balls he is not in this game Throw to Second and back easily is a glacius although the slide was a little awkward compano flashing signs to his infield well if they were to take off he'd throw to second base with Tren the runner at first this will be the 30th pitch of the inning coming up for Martin Perez and Bader spits on the change up and it's two and0 got Francisco Lindor standing on Deck so if you're Bader you have to have a pretty good sense that you're going to get some to hit yeah this is just a simple case of that his change up was dialed in the first three Innings and he's lost to touch for it or the field for it in this inning this a big pitch for Perez and Bader takes curveball for a strike and it's two and one so just to get me over curveball to get back in the count he might throw it again laus at second teren at first with two down and Vader lays off the Sinker and now it's three and one you don't want to face Lindor I'll tell you that Martine Perez had walked four batters and four starts with the Padres but now he's walked the seven and eight hitters and he's behind the number nine hitter three and one and Bader swings and misses it a sinker and it's three and two like he was expecting something else I think he was swinging for the down base hit here is a back breaker for the Padres and Perez the glacius and Tren will be taking off 34th pitch of the inning for Perez 3 and2 to Bader and it's outside ball four and Lindor will come up with the bases loaded so Martin Perez walks the seven8 and nine hitters in succession and Mike schil is on his way out to the mound and that's it's going to be all for Martin Perez who was sailing through the first three and 2/3 retired the first two in this inning but then Martinez took him deep and he walked the next three and now Perez is out after three and 2/3 called to the bullpen brought to you by the New York Lottery Brian hoing coming in up coming in this game that's up one nothing in the fourth and Lindor coming up with the bases loaded that worked for him last night well bad breaking ball maybe one of the few ones that Michael King threw in last night's ball game and then off the left Tanner Matt sui with a line drive out of the [Applause] ballpark R slam was lindor's seventh of his career now he's got a chance for another and he turns away from Brian hing's first pitch ball one hoing was terrific in the first game of this series and he's been terrific since coming over from Miami seven of his eight appearances have been scoreless you're going to see a sinker half the time he's got a good slider he throws a quarter of the time and then the other pitch ya pitch is the splitter left Tander is hitting 130 off hoing B is low to two down and Lindor shoots one foul ball on a strike that happened all of a sudden for Martin Perez two out and nobody on in this inning Martinez took him deep deep three straight walks and now Perez out of the game and hoing trying to get a crucial out against one of the hottest hitters in the game and Lor fouls it off and it's one and two Francisco at a base hit to left field his first time up that was his a right hand battle then he had a slow ground ball to Third and solo threw him out in the third onew coming and he swings and misses got him with a splutter and hoing gets a king-sized out for the Padres to end the top of the four one nothing New [Applause] York Killers Mets are off tomorrow they open their Series in Phoenix against the Raging hot Diamondbacks Tuesday night three in Arizona then three against the white socks before they get home to play the Red Sox and the Reds on the next home stand the white sock B the way lost to the Tigers today 9 to4 their 100th loss of the Season Donovan Solano takes offside the 1962 Mets lost their 100th game on August the 29th they had 34 wins at the time the White Soxs lost their 100th on August 25th they have just 31 win so they're three games ahead of the pace of the 62 Mets how many wins did the Mets have 34 so they only won six more games the rest of the year that's correct they went 40 and 120 ouch well the B Soxs have only won four games since the allstar break that's lifted to left and Nemo is right there and he's got it one out I mean it's funny because you know the 62 Ms are the epitome the the standard Bearer for baseball futility since the 1999 Cleveland Spiders who went 20 and 134 but that's before the modern era so it doesn't get calculated into the uh the legends of futility Ander Bogarts takes a stke well the thing about the 62 season it puts the 69 season into perspective how quickly and fast they wred the ship well it does now yeah yeah no it didn't and of course popped up in the shallow Center and Bader comes on to retire bards two out I mean you have to remember the Mets lost 110 or more games it was four of their first five seasons so it was not wasn't just 120 losses in 62 they were terrible for every year that they played before 69 they finished ninth or 10th every season hey you loved them when they were a terrible course wasn't all about the wins and losses that Jane Jarvis on the Thomas Oregon there you go there's Manny Machado doubled left Center his first time up and Katana misses away with a change up for ball one I mean this the 2003 Tigers came awfully close they lost 119 and they had to go on a winning streak the last week to avoid getting to 120 the White Soxs who knows maybe they get a spark and they avoid the ignominy as well canana working with the lead for the first time has retired the first two here in the fourth behind Machado 2-0 and now 3 and0 Phillies blew out the Royals today 11 to3 after JT El Muto at seven RB's last night he sat today and his backup Garrett stubs went four for four that's a four pitch walk to Machado first walk of the day issued by canana that puts the tying run on and that felt like a pitch around with the leftand batting cronenworth coming up next yeah with Cronin Worth's numbers uh against left handed pitching Corona worth is having a very similar year to nmo as far as home runs and RBIs and Ops difference is that Nimo hit better against lefties than he has against righties Ren worth at a comebacker his first time up and they went darts at the knees for a strike and it's one and one pulled foul one and two to cronenworth the three-game series the Mets will play in Arizona they will miss Zack Gallen I guess you'd have to consider the Diamond Backs Ace although certainly their starting pitching is stronger now than it was a few weeks ago even though Merill Kelly has strong struggled his last couple struggled again today against the Red Sox but they got Eduardo Perez back and the Mets will see him in the first game of the series Tuesday and then young Brandon fought will go on Wednesday Ryan Nelson on Thursday there are the Hond of probs for the series now Thursday for the Mets it might be Peterson on regular rest it might be Tyler or McGill the Mets need to figure that out with Paul Blackburn now on the injured list run worth takes up an in two and two either way it certainly appears as though McGill is going to come up and take Blackburn's spot in the rotation the question is when the Mets decide to slot him in two two coming to Cronin worth there goes Machado with swung and grounded to Second eaus has it and throws out corworth to end the inning a walk and one left after four one nothing New York [Music] we go to the fifth inning Mar ventos leads off for New York and leading off for us Steve GS you saw in the last AR Vientos that he singled the opposite way as really has been his custom for this this you know last three months or so that he's always trying to go the opposite way and Ron you mentioned it that if you watch him during batting practice that is something that he works on every single today this was yesterday we have some footage of him from BP and you can see once we show you this footage that he is just constantly working to right field center field and that is something that is a change this season we talked about how Carlos beltron was the one who told him start working on center field right field and so Vientos does this for all rounds of batting practice you see a lot of guys that maybe they'll do that first round of batting practice trying to go the other way Vientos works on it the entire time and and he said the biggest benefit from doing that is he feels like he's much better on breaking pitches now because it forced him to stay back you know U Steve one of the best hitters in our game is Freddy Freeman who spends an entire batting practice trying to hit line drives over the short Stop's head that's all he does and with Vientos I think it's organizationally I think with guys like his kind of power and Alvarez's kind of power they're trying to make him the best version of a hitter that they can be and then the power will come I think Vientos has bought into that more than Alvarez splutter by hoing to strike out viento so hoing has faced two batters coming on and struck them both out I don't remember hoing pitching too much uh when he was in Miami but this young man's got good stuff yeah his splitter is a new pitch for him this year and it has been a big difference maker and to an already strong San Diego Bullpen the Mets have not seen the two biggest cogs in the San Diego pen in this series their closer Robert Suarez and the former Miami closer Tanner Scott fast ball for a strike to pet Alonzo he's 0 for two today flyed out and ground it out Mets have not used Edwin Diaz in this series with an off day tomorrow well as Mendoza was asked is this a day that Diaz might go more than an inning as Pete dumps one in the right field for a base head off the end of the bat and in front of Bryce Johnson in the Mets of a one out base runner and Mindy said absolutely this is the kind of day that you would anticipate Diaz getting more than three outs he hasn't pitched since Wednesday no game tomorrow Mets have a slim lead late especially with Nunes having gone five outs last night every chance we'd see Diaz in the e it's a long way to go to from here to there though as nmo steps in Brandon hit the ball hard as last time up lined out to right field but he's 0 for two 1 for 10 in the series seems like in 2022 there were always a place in the eighth or ninth inning that you can insert Diaz it's been harder this year well it's funny cuz we were talking about it was it the last time that he pitched oh no when he didn't pitch on Thursday right because they had the heart of the batting over coming up in the eighth and Mendy chose not to use Diaz in that spot and then they broke it open in the ninth and they didn't use him at all because that's a situation where certainly with buck shalter he would put Diaz in for the eighth if the big hitters were coming up sometimes leave him in for the ninth but sometimes go to somebody else for the night two and one to Nemo and he dribbles one up the line tough play for hoing he's going to pick it up and throw and he hits the runner and safe at first is is Nemo well hoing could have let that ball roll and it might have gone foul but he chose to pick it up and Nemo's AB board was definitely going to go foul he should have let it go foul um and nice call by Andy Fletcher who got right on the line the home plate umpire to make sure that nmo was in the runner box and he was perfectly down line if you are outside of that Runner box they could call you out for interfering with the throw no he was right in the right spot remember now you have the entirety of the lane plus the distance between the inside Lane and the grass that you're allowed to run that's a new rule this year so two aboard with one out for Marte and he takes a strike so Nemo gets a base hit on that I just don't know what hoing was thinking cuz had no angle to throw that ball and I'm pretty certain that ball would have gone foul Marte has been up twice grounded to short both times and he grounds that one foul whenever I had that play and Keith was at first we had an agreement that I would take it on the Run get into foul territory and Keith would be waiting for me in foul territory and we'd make the play over there that way you take the runner out of play yeah I didn't see what cronenworth was doing as far as making that kind of an adjustment and Marte chases for strike three three pitches and ho gets him with the splitter for the second out so the Mets with a couple of soft hits in this inning but hoing has struck out the other two batters and now facing JD Martinez who had himself a nice time against Martin Perez a single and a home run for the only run of this game batting here with two out and two on slider way out of the strike zone for ball one so this is the play on on the Nimo soft grounder here up the line first baseman's already committed completely to inside the field to play so he wouldn't have been able to make that adjustment or he would have had to make the adjustment earlier yeah I mean that's that's obviously hard for cronenworth to understand where the pitcher is going to end up but there's just no way that hoing could have hit him with the Target that he presented unless uh you know nmo had the invisibility cloak on that's right another good splitter by hoing that's been a nasty pitch for him and it's one and two also Keith and I had the benefit of a thousand Innings you know playing with each other on the field now Hing with a chance to get through this inning unscathed and he Strikes Out Martinez went right back to the splitter Hing fans three in the inning to work around a couple of hits gives it a one- nothing game two hits against Jose quintano who's had a resurging performance so far today but working with the slimmest of margin that's with a one- nothing lead as we go to the bottom of the fifth Jackson Merill will lead off another ball in right field Marte is getting to it one of the things you have to do when you're a pitcher before you throw that first pitch look around make sure everyone is in their positions well there was a point in his life where [Applause] Merill taking outside ball one the Met reliever would wave to his center fielder before he' throw a pitch really yeah ground ball snagged by kintana like it was nothing one out he's good Fielder he's got quick hands if you're a pitcher who lives down in the strike zone and you give up some ground balls you better learn how to field your position ball hit right on the nose one hopper oh style points flipped it into his throwing hand yeah Turk Wendell when he was younger used to have a whole bunch of habits like he wouldn't throw a pitch unless he waved to the center fielder and he waved back by the way his center fielder growing up was Jim duette really yeah Northern Mass in western Mass wow he would uh eat licorice on on the bench between Innings and then brush his teeth he he would um well he he stayed with the uh the whole taking the Rosen bag and slamming it down on the back of the mound before he threw a pitch I mean that's so many things to have to remember right so he dropped a few of them along the way but the the the spiking the Rosen bag that not only survived his amateur days into the professional ranks but it really fired the crowd up at did oh when he slammed that rosin bag down got everybody revved up we were just talking about Turk the other day with Carlos Mendoza and commenting about you know how careful they are with relievers now how they you know monitor them if they pitch two days in a row or three days out a four Turk in a pened race once pitched nine games in a row what nine in a row I think it was 99 coming down the stretch that year nine straight games two and two to Luis campasano with one out and that just missed outside three and two be a litigious act in today's game he wanted the ball and Bobby was happy to give it to him and he' just go out there throw slider after slider campasano tops one to short charging as Lindor glove and Fire On The Run in time Lor just keeps making every conceivable leg knew he had a slow runner in cisano so he didn't Panic yeah Steve addressed this last night that he is throwing that sidearm throw on the run to make that play a little quicker beautiful it's like a little kid another out above average for Mr smile two out of nobody on here's Bryce Johnson who tried to bun his way on his first time and canana threw him out and a big curve ball drops in for a strike nothing in one that's pulled just fouled one thing about Lindor even early in the season when he wasn't hitting and really was seven weeks the end of the season before he got started offensively his defense was impeccable from day one defense uh leadership he was still smiling um you know Wednesday very rarely on the team planes anymore and on Wednesday when I got on the plane he was kind of slumped into his seat I was like finally he's he's [Applause] human onew coming to Johnson and another Sinker that just misses off the corner two balls two strikes Tana out of his 14 outs has gotten 10 of them on the ground and he gets another ground ball Lindor backs off to play this one against the speed of Johnson gets the quick toss away to throw him out 11 ground ball outs for canana and a one- nothing lead yes he is back JD Martinez dropped to sixth in the order and he responded with a home run for the only run of this game it came against Martin Perez in the fourth the power of the Grimace compels you that's a nice mashup between McDonald's and The Exorcist that's right perfect Jeremiah Estrada is on to pitch for San Diego Jose glacius leads off in the sixth inning fouls the first fast ball back nothing one str's got a fast ball slider and a chitter chitter change/ splitter there there you go I took my time with it no as long as you don't take us down the chitter we're okay okay swinging a Miss at the slider and it's nothing in two well EST strata earlier this season set a Major League record by striking out 13 consecutive batters nobody had ever done that before but the Mets got to him in his appearance at City Field early this season see how he gets that grip early and he has it so deep into his palm and a swing of a Miss there's that splitter chitter whatever you call it and GL is down on strikes for the first out he just buries that and it comes off of his middle finger and his ring finger which is very unusual I mean how do you possibly control that I don't know he just grips it and rips it here's Luis Terren who has a home run against Estrada in his only career at bat against him and he takes that first pitch slider for a strike now Brian ho was really good for his inning and a third in relief struck out four and now Estrada has struck out his first batter meanwhile canana has not struck out anybody but he's thrown five scoreless innings getting 11 ground ball outs David Peterson was similar yesterday he only struck out two and gave up just one run teren fouls back to fast ball one and two strata has struck out 79 batters coming into the day in 47 in the third Innings that's 15 strikeouts per nine it's like up there with the Oakland A's closer right Miller ason Miller and it's kind of like uh well not quite the year that Diaz had two years ago he was around 17 strikeouts per nine almost 50% of the hitters he faced he struck out and Terren lifts one to Center Merl with plenty of room here two out so two up and two set aside now Harrison Bader who flyed out walked over for one fast ball in for a strike nothing and one 98 milph boy there's some big arms in the game now everybody seems to have a couple of them [Applause] [Applause] right Estrada ahead 0 and2 on Bader and he struck him out with heat 99 up in the zone impressive inning for Jeremiah Estrada 1 two three with a couple of strikeouts still one nothing [Applause] [Music] your Optimum Power report or in this case the antithesis of power Jose Kitana finesse the limiting of the San Diego power is what he's done that's nice nicely interpreted there Mason McCoy will lead off McCoy hit a Fly ball to right that Marte one of battle with the sun to Corral that was in the third inning and the curveball hit to right a base hit so Mason McCoy waited on the curveball nicely and he continues to have an impressive series he's got the third hit of the day against kintana can't do any better than this not a bad breaking ball doesn't try to pull it and roll it over goes the other way gets the inning started for the padr tying run is the board and now jerks and profar who had an infield hit in the first then grounded to short in the third Sayo is on call in the men Bullpen and a pickoff toss and that came awfully close boy got back in kintana has 29 pickoffs in his career but none since joining the Mets and he came awfully close to his first does he get him on the hip nah I think late too late on the body will not challenge well you don't know where this is going to go from here but you'd have to say that it has been an impressive bounceback for Jose kintana after four really difficult starts this month tying run at first with nobody [Applause] out and Brar takes a change up off the plate two and0 I think Kitana became a little curveball heavy uh in the last four starts he's thrown less of them more change UPS in this afternoon's King and he bends this curveball down and it's 3 and0 saw Jose B up in the bullpen and the Mets will waste no time getting him in he was up in the Bull Pen last night before the Mets eventually went to Nunes in the eighth but he hasn't pitched in this series and so B is a guy that Mets will lean on heavily [Applause] today and profer takes strike three and one well just like Shield had honing up early to anticipate having to go to him the same with Carlos Mendoza with B up now Donovan Solano on Deck three and one to profar and he takes a kneehigh strike Perfect Pitch by kintana three and two not the first time today that canana has worked his way back from 3 and0 to 3-2 he's walked only one the qu at first with nobody out and canana will make a second pickoff [Applause] try boy runs Pro for a lines one one hop elus stepped on the bag he tries to roll into first but what an incredible play by elus who was covering the bag had to reach back to snag it and then somehow kick out his leg to get it to the base in time for the force play he just continues to provide the acrobatics OMG this one of the best plays I've ever seen Gary called it he was on his way to cover second he makes the play reaches back with his left leg and then tosses sideways a ground ball over to Alonzo what a play all he and Lindor could do after that his laugh look like he was uh he was trying to back heal the ball into the goal that was something I mean he made a great play to start a double play the other night but this this is one that you just can't script he's laughing at the toss wow well fana's now gotten 12 outs on the ground today but none more spectacular than that one the Mets have had an incredible defensive series here in San Diego one and one to to Donovan Solana who's 0 for two profar starts and stops throw back to first by teren and profar able to get back safely oh far it took about three running strides towards second base and then stopped and Terren with a good throw might have gotten him it's like he wanted to go and he didn't like his jump so he went back to the bag goer has seven steals this year two and one now to Solano and he takes a fast ball for a strike and all of a sudden canana able to spot that fast ball where he needs to remember he fell behind Pro for a 3 and0 before he got back in the count now it's two and two to Solano with Bogarts on [Applause] deck and it's popped up a glacius trailing out two out use that glove as a shield for the the sun all the way and never wavered two away well that with the sun in the eyes of Marte he didn't want any part of that so that was really only a glaus could have made that play and he's not wearing sunglasses so he had to use the glove to Shield his eyes from the Sun and he did it effectively as he backpedal two out now Bogarts who's go for two today and he takes a fast ball for a strike and canana with more and more confidence in that fast ball to throw it for a quality strike when he needs to poked the other way by Bogarts and it goes foul nothing and [Music] two Toren just threw the ball in Center past kintana one thing time was out one thing you've noticed Gary is that kintana has not been messing with up in the strike zone he has just relied on keeping that ball down and away from the right-handed hitters and as a result 12 of his 17 outs have come on ground [Applause] balls L and two to Bogarts and he goes away with a change up one ball two strikes this is the guy canana needs to get Manny Machado is on deck and Machado had a rope double against him and then canana pitched around him as second at B he does not want to face Manning and I'll tell you what if he doesn't get Barts out he may not face Manny because they probably bring B in for that rooll that's the that's the play the Chad's got seems like he's got his hit and shoes on today right UT's ready to go Katana though trying to put this inning to bed as he faces Barts with proar at first and two out two and two and Bogart sits a ground ball for Lindor goes the short way side retired six scoreless innings for Jose kintana thanks to the Wizardry of eaus one nothing New York Braves lost for just the second time in their last eight games so the me have a chance to pick up a game on the Braves Diamondbacks though keep winning six straight wins and they solidify their hold on the first wild card spot Mets will be in Phoenix for three games starting on Tuesday night Giants are down 3 to2 to the Mariners in the sixth time of backs are one win away from 20 games over 500 whoa Jason Adam on for the second time in this series he's only been perfect since the trade coming over here from Tampa Bay has had him no runs allowed struck out the side in his Inning on Friday night and the first pitch is pulled foul by Lindor Francisco is one for three today at a base hit as a left hand as a right hand batter in the first since then he's grounded out and struck out Andre's Bullpen has been terrific behind Martin Perez who went just three and 2/3 perz gave up a home run to Martinez walked the next three batters and was pulled Ryan hoing went an inning of the third struck out four Jeremiah EST Strada a one two 3 six he struck out two and now Adam and his change up misses away two balls in a strike Mark Vientos on deck and then Pete Alonzo against Adam he was not allowed to run in his first 10 appearances for the Padres 16 strikeouts in 10 innings there a nasty slider and it's two and two to Lindor just has an unusual emotion just short arms it up there throws hard with that hard biting slider so that PS heart emblem on the uniform in memory of the late owner of the Padre's Peter Sidler changa popped up behind third Solano should have room right along the line catches it in Fair territory to retire l 4 one out our next Picks 11 T cast will be for the windy city on Friday night when the Mets take on the white socks pregame cage will begin at 7:30 first pitch scheduled for 810 that's the opener of the three games at Guaranteed Rate field where the hour points downward one out here's Mark fantos who's one for three what a mess swinging a miss good slider by Adam to start off the entos nothing in one white sock have already made a managerial change Brady seore took over I think he has a win deos slams one to deep Right Center Merrill goes back and it's out of here Mark Vientos in just the same spot where Martinez hit his the big guys keep going to right center 21 home run for Mark Vientos and the Mets now lead it two [Applause] nothing Well Steve told you that he's been working on just staying inside the baseball he has such tremendous power to straight away Center and right center field big hit for the Mets so two nothing New York and now Alonzo takes inside ball one Pete poked a base set to right field his last time up Vientos just went over 300 at bats today in three under three at bats he has 20 doubles and 21 home runs you know the Mets are the only team in the majors that came into the day with three players with 20 doubles and 20 homers theor Alonzo and Vientos Mark keeps adding to it and Alonzo takes slider down two balls in a strike Mets hit three home runs last night two home runs today by Martinez and Vientos and that's been enough for kintana who's been on his game uto has stopped throwing in the Mets Bullpen inan is at 86 pitches through six Innings so perhaps he will start the seventh even with Machado due to lead off although it looks like B may be getting back up now we'll wait to see and Lonzo down on strikes as Adam gets him with that slower slider and there are two out Machado coming up with at least a two-run deficit is different than one nothing well you see the bullpen is quiet so it looks like kintana is going to start the seventh have been pushing their starters a little bit more lately here's Nemo is one for three remember behind Machado is cronenworth and Merill two lefties mhm Nimo rolled one up the first Baseline and hoing hit him in the back with his throw that was his hit his last Tom up and he takes slatter down ball on a strike five of Vientos his last six home runs have been to the right of center field JD's been his mentor and his Guiding Light and the two of them are driving the ball out to right center with regularity 432 ft by the way on that home run oh yeah it was a bomb and nmo swings off the change up and it's two and two Adam that's the first run he is allowed as a San Diego Padre and the fifth home run is allowed this year overall 22 to Nemo and he hits one past the mound up the middle is Barts on the backand the throw is in time to beat Nemo nice play again on the backand by bards to end the inning but bios's home run gives the Mets a little breathing room as canana takes them for the sevening Dan Smith Line Drive center field there it is number 3,000 for Tony Gwyn at Olympic Stadium Tony Glenn has done it and all of Tony's teammates streaming out of the Dugout to congratulated Mr Padre it was inevitable once he got started in his career that 3,000 hits would ensue that was him H hugging his mom who was in attendance I didn't know who the pitcher was till right there that little piece Dan Smith um I didn't know how to get him out hit about 450 maybe higher against me just he had had no hold well Jose canana is still out there getting ready for the seventh now with a two nothing lead canana has not struck out a batter over six Innings other way the official number 441 441 441 kept him under 450 great job by me 26 of his 3,141 hits 26 hits wow they saybo will stay ready in the bullpen but canana who came into the day lugging an August ER of 8.27 has given Carlos Mendoza a huge lift my last memory on the field of Tony Gwyn we had a laugh after he' got another base hit cuz I threw him a splitter that bounced and like a cricketeer he hit it for a base hit up the middle he got the first he was laughing I was laughing on the M trying to knock out the Wicket Manny Machado leads off in the home seventh and takes Sinker well outside for ball one Machado has been the only stumbling block for canana today a double in a walk in his two PL appearances and kintana keeping it away from him two and0 as Ronnie noted you got the two lefties behind Machado and Corin worth and Merill both of whom have struggled so far today they've hit four ground balls between them and a curveball drilled to left nmo started in now going back it's over his head and off the base of the wall but Machado is only going to get one base out of this nmo misplayed that ball he started in but once it hit off the base of the fence he played the caram well and Machado doesn't get past first base well Machado got caught watching this ball as he hit it right on the nose tried to speed up by that time it was too late too much Top Spin on that ball for him to think that was going to go out of the ballpark good play by nmo so Machado now two for two and the tying run at bat with cronenworth who's h two ground balls already today and canana would like to roll another one he's already gotten one ground ball double play today and 13 of his 18 outs have come on the ground another ball gets loose out on the Outfield and Harrison Bader will have to run it down my only question is that did the Umpire call timeout before that pitch was delivered and do we have a no count here it's a really good [Applause] question W says one and0 and we're not getting any correction from Andy Fletcher corworth with a check swing foul one ball one strike rwth came into the day hitting just 203 against lefties grounded one back to canana and grounded one to acius two nothing New York's seventh inning and Cronin worth takes the curve ball just off the plate two and one the ren try to hold that extra beat for Fletcher but clearly outside Jackson Merill another leftand hitter on Deck Muto staying ready in the bullpen [Applause] that was probably canana buying some time for himself exactly wasn't ready to make the pitch so throw one over to First Ren sets up inside and he got it in there flyball out to left Center Bader back in the Gap he'll get there and he makes the catch and Machado back to First Gana coming inside to cronenworth got it in enough to get the Fly ball for the first out [Music] so one out and one on now Jackson Merrill he's been up twice and grounded out both times Merrill came into the day hitting just 216 against lefties in what it's otherwise been a fabulous rookie season and a first pitch curveball fouled off nothing in one when they were seemingly winning every single day R's got so many big hits from Merill during that [Applause] time let's try to beat the Padres three out of four and Merl takes fast ball upstairs one ball one Strike last time the Padre's lost a home series it was before the allstar break when they dropped two of three to Atlanta one-1 coming that's too high so canana who's been keeping his fast ball down for the most part missing upstairs twice in a row and perhaps that is an indication that he's losing a little bit of steam yep 93 pitches on the day right hand head Luis capano on Deck 2-1 coming and the curveball outside now he's falling behind Merill three and one I have a feeling this is going to be his last pass keep in mind though they've got a pretty hefty left-handed bench with a rise and Peralta both available from that side if B comes in 3-1 on the way and the curveball outside ball four so now the Padres of the tying runs on base second walk of the day for kintana and that's going to be the end of the line for him donos Mendo on his way to the mound he's got Jose B ready to come in kintana with a great bounceback start today will leave with a two- nothing lead gold to the bullpen brought to you by the New York Lottery and things going his way but today with 13 ground ball outs six and a third he's held the Padres off the scoreboard but now it gets dicey Jose B comes in and that enables Mike schil to go to his left-handed bench and today that means Luis arrives to bat for Luis capano and then David Peralta on Deck to back for Bryce Johnson yeah two real good hitters are now brought to the plate against B who is in the fire now B had a rocky outing the last time out against Baltimore he walked his first two hitters but then worked his way out of it comes in here with two men on base carrying the tying runs and the first pitch to arise is outside for ball one arise took an 0 for last night went 0 for four after five hits in the first two games of the series including a home run Machado at second Merill with excellent speed at first and arise takes fast ball down and it's two and0 well one thing you do get with a rise though a guy who does not hit the ball in the air or tries not to as a double play comes into play for B and the Mets he has grounded into 18 double plays this year but he wouldn't Chase and now it's three and0 this is what happened to BTO when he faced the Orioles his last time out on Wednesday just could not throw strikes when he first came in the game hard to do that though in a two- nothing game with two men on and there's a strike three and one strikes me that that's what happened to Paul Blackburn couple of nights ago fell behind in The Count On The Rise threw it right down the middle and gave up a home run 3-1 coming and there's a strike g a change up and it's three and two so just as canana did on a couple of occasions today B fell behind 3 and0 and comes right back to get full course arise is the best two- strike hitter around Machado with second Merill at first with one out 3-2 coming Fly ball center field should be easy for Bader Machado will tag at second Bader back pedals to grab it Machado will go to third Merill will hold it first and it's just a long second [Applause] out and now David Peralta will bat for Bryce Johnson that was a good job by Bader who got behind that ball and got enough on the throw Merill has great speed and was really thinking of tagging up and getting into scoring position but it was Bader's play that stopped him at first Ral has been a hot hitter four for seven in this series pinched last night and made the final out of the game against Daniel Nunes and now B trying to keep the Mets on top with the tying runs aboard Machado at third Merill at first with two out and peralto watches upstairs for ball one question is what do the Mets do here if Nill takes off well they've shown you that they have not defensed it uh of late but I would defense it now especially with Machado on third not a lot of speed and with Terren behind the plate yeah on the inside corner with a change up and it's one and one and if I were the padr as I would certainly think about sending Merill in this spot he's got 13 Steals on the year Lindor is close enough with his defensive positioning the cover second but a very short lead and that's hit over the bag just foul oh that barely missed being a fair Ball third base onire Mike molinski had it foul all the way carala broke his Bat and barely missed and Machado is giv it to molinski who says nope it was foul [Applause] it was it was foul good call it was foul what I think Machado saw is that ball hit the line early but then peeled foul I think it was an excellent call by molinski shadoow trying to do some amateur umpiring but molinsky got it right so Balta goes back for new bat and will come back up with a one and two [Applause] count onew from B and it just missed outside with the change up two and [Applause] two s canana six and a third brilliant Innings today four hits two walks no strikeouts with 13 ground ball outs two- two to Peralta pull and that's foul so he's gone Line to Line and barely missed an extra base hit each time that time Austin Jones the rookie first base umpire made the call I think some fans were waiting for that call foul but Austin Jones was had to avoid the ball before he could make the call watch hanging so he's avoiding and then by the time he gets on his feet again that's when he called it foul and again it was the right call yeah easily foul that [Applause] one oh was shult is out there screaming at him is he saying that it should be the home plate umpire's call no no no once it goes past the base it's the base umpire's call two two coming and Merill runs the throw by ter and he is out he's out Lindor kept the tag on as Merill came off the base Jackson Merill thrown out trying to steal and the inning is over the Mets who have not been throwing through on those first and third steals do so this time and Lindor gets the tag down and keeps it down as m came off the bag and that's how this inning comes to an end Shel is [Music] hot the rest well it ends up being almost a pitch out to Teran and that Lindor stayed with him and applied the tag after Merill went past as one of those game-winning plays and Machado never broke for the plate as Lor was reaching for Merill and got him on the hand right there oh my goodness what a play Tanner Scott now on to pitch in the eighth inning and gets it over to Marte one and one kashio is now doing the catching after compano left for a pinch hitter and David Peralta who pinch hit stays in the game in right field Mart's 0 for three today and swings and misses at the Scott fast ball one and two Jason Adam work the seventh gave up the home run to Mark Vientos that stretched the Mets lead to two nothing and now Scott Scott has had a brilliant year but he hasn't been that good for the Padres picked up at the deadline from the Marlins and shot the other way and there is cworth to snag the liner off the bat of Marte for the first [Applause] out we'll say canana today went six and a third did not allow a run did not have a strikeout it's only the fourth time in Mets history that a pitcher has gone at least six Innings and given up no runs and had no strikeouts and the last time it happened was 1991 what Tony Castillo had a game like that the two others Gil and Cisco in 1963 but that was in relief and the only other time Ed Lynch lych 1984 wow and now kintana today six and a third no runs no strikeouts o and two to Martinez who gave the Mets the lead with his fourth inning home run two solo shots have been enough for the Mets today ball and two strikes to JD well this is the Home Run on the fast ball it looked like from Martin Perez lot of OMG today for the Mets this has been a guy who JD has hit well he's three for six with a home run against Tanner Scott Marlins shipped off basically their entire Bullpen at the trading [Applause] deadline JD fouls off that fast ball Scott made 44 appearances for the Marlins this is now his 11th appearance for San [Applause] Diego one two coming and it's away two and two to Martinez with Jose glacius on Deck what's the big difference for Scott to me just his control uh he would get in trouble against the match just from walks seemed to his cured that this season and he strikes that JD back door slider got him for the second out so two away that slider almost acted like a backup slider and never broke into the strike zone to Martinez so now glacius is 0 for two in a walk at the plate made a brilliant defensive play at second base one that uh I'm sure will be replayed a thousand times that's Middle infielders have had quite a day with the gloves and let's not leave out Luis Tren who has now thrown out 10 of 17 potential base Steelers I mean and we were talking about it going into that situation with first and third what do the Mets do if Merill takes off and for so much of the season the option has been to hang on to the ball not when torren is playing no one gets out of the shoot quicker than Terren no he reminds me a little of is um Patrick belly with the Giants gu who really gets forward so well ni fast ball fouled off by glaus one and two well what he was helped by watch where this pitch ends up it ends up in the other batter's box so almost like a pitch out for him but he had to go out and get it and one motion close up and make an accurate throw I mean the way elius and Lindor have thrown their bodies around today to make spectacular plays is just a thing to behold two two from Scott to acius and he bounces one off his foot a foul ball well Mike Schultz somehow is still in this game after really giving it to the umpires think more about that foul ball call than anything else GL is able to stay in the advat by fouling off that slider I mean I don't know what angle the Padres might have seen on the iPad or in the clubhouse but it certainly appeared from here as though Mike molinsky got the call right yeah on the ball hit by David caralon two two coming and glacius goes down on strikes the time Scott finishes off a one two three inning with a couple of strikeouts at the bottom of the eth still two nothing New York Met's baseball was brought to you by Nissan save big before summer ends at the Nissan end of summer Sales Event by Mattress Firm it's their best sale of the year the Labor Day sale and by stoop and Shop feed the moment last to the eighth two nothing New York Jose B stays in to face David Peralta who is back at the plate it's been a lot of drama in Peralta at bat already and it's not done Tyrone tellor comes in the game to play right field for New York wal to hit a bow ball that was controversial down the left the Third Base Line and then one that was not quite as controversial down the first Baseline and then was at the plate when Jackson Merill was thrown out trying to steal now he gets a fresh turn it bat and B falls behind him 3 and0 this is what happened when B came in to face a rise as he fell behind 3 and0 it's first batter in the seventh and now behind on Peralta Mason McCoy on deck and that's in for a call strike three and [Applause] one mentioned at the outset today this might be the kind of day where Edwin Diaz might be available for more than three outs but he's not up at least not yet here's a call strike and again b gets back in the count it's three and two no need to be fancy you got a two-run lead throw the good Power Sinker get Peralta to hit the ball on the ground 32 coming and he hits it on the ground and eaus is there to play the short hop down on a knee and that's the first out sayu has been a revelation since being moved to the bullpen he was doing well as a starter before before they moved him but he's made the adjustment about as well as anybody can and making the adjustment in season is really hard thing to do well Edwin Diaz is standing that's the latest update there's Mason McCoy and he takes a strike nothing and what it's kind of like when they say um you Jacob theg grum's throwing from 90 ft yeah edin Diaz is standing and now he's tossed to baseball COI checks the swing and he went around and it's nothing in two Diaz has pitched more than one inning three times this year but if B can make quick work of the Padres here in the eighth there'll be no need for Diaz to be ready before the ninth Mets have had only one save in August they've been playing a lot of games that have not required saves slider off the plate and it's one and two very similar to the first game in the series where it was really a good game three to one after eight but then the Mets of course had seven hits I mean Diaz got two wins this week against the Orioles when he pitched in a tie game and then the Mets had walkoff home runs so it's been that kind of stretch Mets at 11 saves in July but only one in August and it's already the 25th and they've won seven of their last 11 games it's a go figure McCoy had a base hit to right field his last time and B just missed inside two and two Jon Pro far the on Deck batter let say canana six in the third Innings no runs four hits two walks no strikeouts low to Z to 4.36 a terrific bounceback start for [Music] kintana change of Misses down and a Full Count to McCoy they do not want to be walking Mason McCoy but it seems like we said that quite a number of times in this series he's had a couple of walks already in this series third batter for BAU third Full Count and McCoy draws the walk and that'll get the tying run to the plate with Jer and profile so the question if you're Carlos Mendoza is when is the right time for Diaz is it after profar no matter what happens with the right hand hitters coming up I don't think so I think Bogarts Machado is what he'll be coming in for R far one for three last time up with a runner going he hit a ball just to the right of second base and acius made a play that's just a little hard to describe reached back for it somehow snagged it and then kicked the base going in the other direction and again B is behind in the count it's two and0 to profar and teren is going to walk it out to the mound Robert Suarez who has not pitched in this series is up in the Padre's Bullpen they're closer so I think it's getting more and more likely that Diaz will be in to face Solano yeah I don't know if it's the work or or being in the bullpen or you know early when we saw B when he was at his best coming out of the bullpen he had a different arm angle and his change up was dropping straight down now it's kind of fading out of the strike zone cuz his arm angle has dropped a bit you think that's fatigue I don't know if it's fatigue I just know that it's been different the last three or four times sometimes you just get into bad habits the mechanics were a bit [Applause] off so far has 20 home runs this year 12 of the 20 have come as a leftand batter tying run at the plate and he takes a strike two and one they've taken a lot of fast balls ahead in the count the Padre's the last three [Applause] Innings 2-1 from B and profar Yanks one foul on the change up and it's two and two say kintana went back and looked it's only the second time in his career he went more than three innings in a game and had no strikeouts first time came 12 years ago July of 2012 for the white socks in the shadow of the light stanions just encroaching across the Third Base [Applause] Line 2 two coming and profar Yanks that one foul and another change up [Music] [Applause] lecoy at first with one out two two coming to profar and he Yanks one to deep right field back goes Taylor and it's out of here jerx and profar the game with a two run Homer signed as an afterthought what a year proar has had for the Padre's his 21st home run and it's included so many big hits as Padre's team is specialized in coming from behind late and after being styed for seven in the third Innings today profar got a pitch to handle and made no mistake ball up in the strike zone flat that certainly was a mistake but the walk to Mason McCoy was a mistake as well and so we start even again Donovan Solano the batter in a 2-2 game and he takes a fast ball up and in from B for ball one well this will almost certainly be bhau's last batter as you got Bogarts and Machado to follow there's a call strike and it's one-onone but the equation has changed now you don't want to bring Diaz in in the eighth inning that's why maton is throwing right now mhm and that one bounces two balls in a strike Diaz is sitting Mah is tossing and the Mets need to flip the script meanwhile the Padres have their Ace reliever Robert Suarez getting ready to pitch the top of the ninth either in a tie game or they hope with the [Applause] lead Suarez brothers are having themselves quite a season aren't they Albert with the Orioles and Roberts with the Padres 22 to Solano struck him out got him with a change up and that's the second out of the inning so do you leave B in to face Bogarts I do I do May Tano be brought in to face Machado if Barts gets on that is the first strike out from Med pitching today he T it didn't strike out anybody and is six and a third now B registers a strike out two out and nobody on Bogarts fouls off a first pitch fast ball nothing in one Bogarts 0 for three today three for 15 in this [Applause] series the Mets two runs seven hits the Padres two runs five hits all the runs in this game coming on a trio of home runs grounded down toward the hole backhanded by Lindor the jump throw to first not in time and Barts has an infield hit that prolongs the inning and it brings Carlos Mendoza out of the Dugout and he'll bring on Phil maton to face Manny machata with the go-ahead Run aboard so a rough go for buo who was behind everybody walked the number nine hitter and gave up a searing two- on Homer to jxon Pro far to tie the game now with the go-ahead run on base BAU exits and M time comes on 22 in the [Applause] eighth now Jose BOS had a couple of rough Tings lately today giving up the two- run Homer to jxon profar that tied the game and now Phil maton will come in and try and put this inning to bed facing Manny Machado the stoic Phil maton in he pitched in game one clean inning got Machado the ground out in that inning in fact Manny is now 0 for five in his career against mton Barts at first with two down and Manny takes up an in with a cutter ball one Machado has not been retired today doubled to left Center in the second walked in the fourth and then hit one off the wall and left that he stopped to admire and got only a single out of leading off the seven man he being Manning it's hit hard but right at fento he'll go to First with it to get the jogging Machado who never dropped his Bat that retires the side with the two- run home by proar ties it going to the [Applause] night bur didn't get to the big leags till he was 31 years old but boy has he become a star they just keep bringing arm after arm out of that bull Fen for the for the Padres as far as 29 saves this year and Jesse Winker is going to bat for Luis teren leading off in the top of the ninth it'll be Winker then Harrison Bader and Francisco Lindor looking to get to the Padre closer after jerks and crar is two1 Homer tied the game in the bottom of the eighth Winker made a great catch in left field yesterday it's two for six at the plate in this series after his walk-off her works on Wednesday and he HS the first pitch on the ground to Short Stop McCoy had him played perfectly and clad Winker one pitch and one out for Suarez well I don't know if I've ever seen this number before but Mr Suarez throws his fast ball 74 4% of the time there used to be a day when that happened but not recently his strikeouts are not overwhelming though struck out less than a batter per inning which is shocking for a guy who throw his 98 and that's 98 on the Block 99 even nothing in one de biter Diaz getting ready for the bottom of the [Applause] ninth hoping the Mets can get him a lead to work with and Bader takes another one right on the corner and it's nothing in two Andre's Bullpen was put into service early in this game Martine Perez went just three and 2/3 Mets have gotten just one run against the bullpen that was vos's home run in the seventh and Vader fouls back a high fast ball well out of the strike [Applause] zone well for Mike Schult this is kind of the last Ace to play in the deck out of the bullpen O2 coming to Bader and he hits one on the ground to the right side Bogarts is there two out Suarez has gotten a couple of ground ball outs and now the power of Robert Suarez against the red hot heat of Francisco Lindor Lindor is one for four today at a base sit back in the first inning they'll be facing Suarez for the first time in a regular season game when the Mets faced the Padres in the postseason in 2022 Suarez was working as a setup man and had a great series pitched two perfect Innings against the Mets in that series and a knee high fast ball on the outside corner perfectly placed nothing in one I can see why he's able to throw just fast ball that's right seems to be able to throw them wherever he wants to Ben is well in right-hander gets ready for the 01 and Lindor swings over the top of 100 mph fast ball and it's 0 and two and D hit two home runs last night but he goes down swinging on the high cheese by Suarez who has himself a one two three top of the nin that sends us to the bottom with the Mets and Padre's [Applause] [Music] tie to the 10th and you have to think that part of the calculation here is that he's able to pitch the ninth and 10th if necessary yeah if he has an easy n th inning hopefully you won't need that in here to face cronenworth Merill and aosa was caros could have left bon in the game after he got one out and threw just two pitches in the eighth but he goes to Diaz here to try and blow the Padres away and get it to Extra Innings Jak cronenworth is 0 for three today he'll face a right-hand pitcher for the first time today he's 1 for 12 in this series 0 for two in his career against Diaz and we have another pitch comish earlier today M kintana threw one pitch and then had a pitch comom issue this time Edwin Diaz throws zero pitches and has a pitch comom issue now canana got called for a pitch clock violation when he had his problem don't know if Andy Fletcher is going to charge one here well I was thinking to myself in between Innings Met's got to dig deep can't let this game get away but that really is every game for the rest of the season it's presented with an opportunity today when the Braves finally lost a game to Washington to get within a game and a half of Atlanta so now cronenworth and he takes Diaz's first fast ball outside for ball one got the two left-and hitters corworth and Merrill and then higashioka due up in the ninth and konorth fouls one and it's one1 say B wi an inning on a third in relief allowed two runs two hits they mton came on to the final out of the eighth and now Diaz trying to get it to the 10th and Corner worth requests [Applause] time fast balls from Diaz and he's aead one and two he's got his good heat today through a 9899 with the Outfield defense playing so deep for the Mets got to be careful any ground ball that would get into the Outfield past the infielders croner worth will be looking for two one two slider fouled off [Music] [Applause] [Applause] again the onew and he just got a piece of that slider to stay on the [Music] inat rwth has 15 home runs this [Music] year two Tom Allstar hanging in there against Diaz leading off in the bottom of the [Applause] nin and he lays off the slider two balls two [Applause] strikes yes has not pitched since Wednesday when he was the winning pitcher against the Orioles he worked to one two 39th and then got the victory when Jesse Winker hit the walkoff Home Run he had the same circum cumstance Monday against the Orioles not the win when Alvarez hit the walkoff 22 and lifted foul in corner worth giving him a battle here and as we noted what you hope for for Diaz is a relatively easy night so he can pitch the 10th but here he is about to throw his eighth pitch of the opening at bat against Cronin worth in the ninth and he struck him out got him with a slider so there's the first out for Diaz and just the second strike out for met pitchers today it's interesting the slider of Diaz's so far this year is served more as a change up because it's not really breaking but after 99 mph it eludes the bat of crony worth Jackson Merrill Merill is over for two he walked in the seventh inning but then was thrown out trying to steal to end that bottom of the seven Merl's got 18 home runs in his rookie season Diaz misses badly to the arms side it's two [Music] and0 barrol facing Diaz for the first time and he launches one to deep right on the Padres have won this ball game Jackson Merill with his 19th home run of the year after profar ties it in the eighth Merill wins it in the ninth and a crushing loss for the Mets as the Padre's get a split of the four game series well to me this kid has become the front runner for the Rookie of the Year he has had so many big hits for this team and another one this afternoon the Mets got an inspiring performance from Jose kintana today they played some spectacular defense behind him they got home runs from JD Martinez and Mark Vientos but Jose buo allowed a home run to proar in the eighth and Diaz surrenders a walk-off home run to Merill in the ninth and it's the Padre with their eighth walk-off win of the year will get a split of the four game series as they win it 3 to2 and so the Mets miss a chance to gain ground on the Braves who lost today they say two and a half games back with 31 games left to play [Applause] so these teams split four that'ss W five out of seven in the season series but a very disappointing loss today as their Bullpen lets them down and lets a two- nothing lead get away late and the Padre's win this one 3 to2
