The Next Star Edge Rusher For Georgia? | Georgia Bulldogs Football 2024

welcome back to another episode of rock boys football deal a talking point that we have hammered home over the last couple of weeks and months heading into the 2024 season for this Georgia program you know where is that Elite pass rush GNA come from in 2024 where you look back at this Georgia team in 2023 there were not many parts of this Georgia program that weren't Elite this is coming from two Michigan fans if there was a team we didn't want to see in the college football playoffs it would have been them Georgia bu bulog d one of the things that kind of separated Georgia in 2023 specifically the defense from what we saw in 2022 and 2021 was kind of that Elite pass rush I mean it was a good pass rush but you take a look at the numbers only a 6.6% sack rate that was 57th in the country me tell me the last time Georgia was 57th in the country in sack rate and I know that's not an end all be all stat but I think it does highlight and Kirby smarts talked about this extensively we got to impact the quarterback a little bit more specifically on those third and long situations which makes you think all right who are going to be the guys heading in 2024 where it is third and long and we're saying hey we got to pin our ears back get after the quarterback you know who's G to do that now the Georgia fans who've been rocking with the fellas the last couple weeks and months know we've talked extensively about jayen Walker being one of the better pure Edge rushers on this Georgia program Dilly guy that I don't think anybody's higher on than you are heading into 2024 is Damon Wilson Jr who was a freak Show in terms of rushing the passer as a true freshman again limited sample size but a 29% pass rush win rate is an absolute ludicrous number D he's up to 255 pounds which I think makes him a better overall player specifically against the run and we're going to talk about that a little later on I think we're buying all the stock we can and Damon Wilson Jr heading into 2024 really excited to get into the film a little bit talk about what we saw from him as a freshman before doing as always just want to say thank you to you guys and to the Georgia fans it's been a blast whether we're talking recruiting whether we're taking film deep dies preview in 2024 the amount of support y'all have shown the boys over the last couple weeks and months it means the world if you guys do enjoy the content consider subscribing to the channel and without further Ado I will give you the T boox here Damon Wilson what's he bring to this Georgia program and I think when you kind of talk about who are going to be those Elite pass rushers to me Damon Wilson might be the most proven Ed Rush on this team at least in terms like not proven but like with that high upset I mean you saw from him last year were just incredible and obviously when you hear Glenn Schuman talk and Kirby Smart Talk they don't like scheming around their players so they obviously expect everyone to be able to do everything and you saw some moments where Damon Wilson playing more around that 235 pound range last year was a bit of a problem in that run game so they really didn't feel comfortable using him a whole lot but I think this year again with what you said put that weight on kind of probably looks more the part if you will I think to me should be the most natural great great pass rusher coming through this Georgia program you talk about high upside I mean the most proven pass rusher on this team Mel Williams a guy that we expect to be a top 15 overall draft pick D Mel Williams is a certain type of pass rusher right a little bit more speed to power a little bit more physically imposing I think what George is looking for here is where are those Ferraris coming from think a guy like Nolan Smith a guy that is going to test tackles athletically on that outside shoulder it was Jaylen Walker and Damon Wilson now I think the two fatal flaws for both of those players in the 2023 season was they were not very good against the run I saw a lot of Georgia fans whether it's on Twitter whether it's on the message boards getting frustrated with Chaz chamblas playing as much as he did why did Chaz chamblas play that much because he is Elite against the run but with the emergence of Damon Wilson and Jaylen Walker as being a little bit more well-rounded football players going into year three and year two respectively I think they're going to be able to get on the football field a little bit more consistently and you start having that conversation of what the best version of this Georgia defense is not a shot at my guy CH Chamas a guy that's gonna play a lot I love Chaz chamblas the best version of this Georgia program is with Damon Wilson being an all down Defender for this Georgia program in the 2024 year and that's exactly where I see it again he just needed to round out his game but as we get into the film I mean there is no doubt he he has everything you kind of want and what a premier and I think when you look at the film for Damon Wilson and when he played meaningful snaps it was exclusively on these third and long situations where you're going to see him working right at the bottom your scream against this left tackle and Austin Barber D the first thing you love about Damon Wilson is what he can I mean Elite First Step devastating First Step but his ability to dip and rip and attack that outside shoulder there's just not many tackles that can deal with that level of juice that Damon Wilson brings and again that was kind of an element of Georgia pass rush last year that you just kind of felt like was missing and you look at Damon Wilson Jr his ability to win and run that Arc it's kind of Next Level stuff and again this is all as a true freshman once he gets a little bit better play strength I think it's only going to get better deal you take a look at another rep against missoury again another third and long situation this is Meaningful snaps right you're only up by three late second quarter at home against Missouri working against the right tackle armad meu hill we think is going to be a legitimate highquality offensive tackle for Missouri was last year certainly is goingon to be this year very similar situation I mean armad membu just not having a chance with Damon willson violent first step and again attacking that outside shoulder just kind of some Next Level stuff from Damon Wilson here and you just see him with more of an attacking mindset I feel like then a lot of guys who a lot of guys like to get their hands on I mean the way he's able to get guys hands off of him and then have that functional flexibility and fluidity around the edge where he looks really strong I mean you see he's not getting stuck he's not getting caught up and and that's okay like okay you can be a little bit disruptive if you're the type of guy who doesn't maybe have that extra gear if you will that extra flexibility and fluidity on the edge but if you're gonna be a guy who puts up big sack numbers you need to have that ability it separates guys like Von Miller in those real Premier Edge rushers again you see the moments of him really having it and there's just not a lot guys whether it's on Georgia whether it's on Alabama any team in the country there's just not many guys who are built that way who have the explosiveness the flexibility the functionality all that those kind of players are so meaningful for an elite defense I think you look at Elite defense as a lot of times you see that kind of play or that kind of edge rushia that again I think at times Georgia lacked last year I think the second and the point out about Damon Wilson when you're going to see on the film is just a polished pass rusher I mean you see a lot of true freshman just rely on just their raw athleticism sometimes one thing right whether it's power whether it's speed whether it's a certain move it's just like the bag of tricks isn't that deep they probably just had run things that they could kill guys in in high school and then you got to develop it out a little bit more I think you're kind of right Damon Wilson kind of already had this kid would his bag was deep as a true freshman which I think was just as impressive as the athletic specimen Damon Wilson was his man that he know what he was doing in terms of attack and tackles in that pass rushian Dill kind of what makes him a special pass rusher hey I don't only have to win with with speed in attacking the outside Str there if you want to heavy set me I mean I I can go right through tackles as well Richie George a guy that just struggled all year but look at Damon willson Get Low pads kind of blow up that pocket you run this play back we got Jaylen Walker coming on the edge on the other side D you talk about some of the best pass first units Georgia might be able to put out I wonder if they play around with maybe kicking Mel Williams at that three Tech on these third and long having Damon Wilson and Jaylen Walker coming off the edge because hey Damon Wilson's doing his job going speed the power take a look at Jaylen Walker on the bottom of your screen you knew I was gonna throw in a little Jaylen Walker too just a ton of juice attacking the outside shoulder as well now D we talked a lot about positives I think we have to talk about what prevented Damon Wilson from play quite frankly the same conversation with Jaylen Walker what preent these kids are so good at at Rushing the passer why weren't they playing more for this Kirby Smart Glenn Schuman defense in 2023 well this is kind of the answer here top of your screen working kind of head up maybe on the outside shoulder of this left tackle here D what does Chast chamblas a lead at winning at the point of attack Damon Wilson struggled here like there's no secret about it right he's just getting moved off the ball with this double team you said it best at the top Georgia and Glenn Schuman they're not going to play Edge rushers that aren't complete players and if you are a liability in the Run game which not a shot of Damon Wilson it's not to see freshman struggle with this he was a little bit of a liability stopping the Run that's kind of what prevented Damon Wilson from getting on the field now that was Damon Wilson at 235 pounds what does Damon Wilson look like at 250 pounds heading into 2024 I think that's the big question because if he takes a step in terms of that run defense and eating up some double teams and winning at the point of attack I think this kid's Off to the Races in 2024 and that's what's got to excite you again because a lot of the like real Talent it felt like to an extent from Georgia was coming from some of those young guys whether that's on the inside you look at guys like Jordan Hall obviously Christen Miller or you get on to the outside with Jaylen Walker Damon Wilson Jr again some of those younger players they did have not saying like brinson's really good Ingram Dawkins when he's healthy has been really good but those guys who have that sort of like they'll be firstr round draft picks in their junior year kind of vibe to them frankly a lot of them were the younger guys so I'm that's just generically Damon Wilson's probably my most excited guy I am for this Georgia balog team but there's a whole lot of young guys who I think Georgia fans should be really excited about because I think they need more eliteness and talking about like how you want to get Damon Wilson Incorporated in this defense which I think from the film and from just watching him play as a freshman you kind of want to see I'm not opposed for having Chaz chamblas on the field on first and second down I want to see Damon Wilson more on the field on those third and long situations but if Georgia can just I mean hey that's the luxury when you're Kirby Smart the Georgia Bulldogs Glenn Schuman you got a ton of guys that you can use in different situations not other teams can do this Georgia can I mean what if CH Chamas mcau Williams are kind of your starting guys on the edge stopping the run and then when you get into those second and third and Longs those obvious passing Downs that's when I want to see more Jaylen Walker and Damon Wilson hey if Damon Wilson is not completely ready to stop the run as a true sophomore that's okay okay that's okay to an extent but I think at the end of the day you want him on the field just more and what to do that it can't just be like well if they call a run play we're we're in real trouble like you obviously there needs to be that fundamental Baseline that when they call a run play he'll do his job he doesn't necessarily need to excel at that and that's why you have when you're Georgia you have packages and you have different guys who excel at different areas but you can't be a liability as you kind of said on the outside so I and we we kind of EX yeah we expect Damon Wilson to probably take that step again I don't think it's all too rare to see freshman struggle at the point of attack especially in the SEC but I think what you want to focus on if you're Georgia is he we had question marks about having an Elite pass rush in 2024 there are some answers on this Georgia roster specifically guys like Damon Wilson and jayen Walker again Mel Williams gets the attention he deserves the boys want to shout out a couple other guys that we think are just sleeping Giants for this Georgia program heading into 202 for we'll cut it there again appreciate you guys rocking with
