Baseball fans and welcome the show brings you a matchup of division Rivals it's the San Diego Padres taking on the Los Angeles [Music] Dodgers joined by my partner Chris Singleton I'm John chambi well singy this is going to be special what's more exciting than a home opener how about a home opener for an undefeated Club I mean that's pretty special if you ask me they couldn't have asked for a better start to the year and now they're hoping the celebrations continue here in front of their home fans first pitch coming your way next just about set to go now the starting pitcher in this one Tyler glass now Chris have a Scouting Report last year kind of The League average in terms of RA and you know what that's why you have five different spots in the starting rotation You' got to have people round things out and not everyone's going to pitch like a number one or number two every outing or every season but last year he gave his team an opportunity and a chance to win every time he took them out on average and when you look at that kind of performance it has a place on every ballve Kim the next up for the Padre's two right back to him on the mound on the first quick start to this afternoon's action too let's take a look at the Padre's lineup and the key to victory for them here get their starter some run support early if they can get him that run support early it's likely the other team folds because they know how dominant he can be once he gets settled in so put pressure on that other team swings through that and it's a strike out and it's a three up three down inning Padre's down in order back here at Chavez Ravine and towing the slab in this one Michael ping Chris a sub three er for him a year ago when your numbers are coming in under three as a starting pitcher that's going out there every fourth or fifth day taking the ball competing against really good Big League hitters it's extremely impressive and you wonder what he figured out last year that he can carry into this season that can help him to maintain that number or even here's the Dodgers lineup now Chris this is a lineup offensively that could be really good for years to come they're deep first and foremost but the way that they can manipulate their personnel for matchups and everything else it's uh very intelligent the way that they use their team and I I think it creates a little bit of uh uncertainty for opposing team especially in a big game big series Freddy Freeman up to the dish frean swag and a line drive base hit out of to center field and that extends the inning for Chris Taylor seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there that's textbook is got his stride low out of the way early he stayed inside that ball and squared it up out front man that was like he was in the cage Hitting off a te and there's a foul ball [Applause] [Music] two outs cuts on it and misses that's a strike out had him way out front of the slur top of the second Fernando ta Jr to hit here fando and right back to the mound fires over to First and they take care of ta for the out Luis cusano digs in now one out base is empty and that is cut on and missed and it's one and two two now Fly ball to Right [Applause] Center what a play in right field two away look how far he had to go that time what an amazing catch he believes that he can get to everything and that attitude allows the speed to play in well enough for him to run down balls that guys would just play off the Hop two out space is empty Jake Cronin workor getting ready to hit swings through that one for strike two one ball two strikes swing and a ball hit out towards left center field and that is is that we'll go to the bottom of the second no score back here at Dodger Stadium Max M at the dish third B Max [Applause] m in the air right center this is matched way back and B that's worth the price of admission it's one nothing Chris he's hovered in backto back games now yep seeing the ball well and he's got his timing locked in he's looking pretty dangerous at the dish right [Applause] now anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the pl the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage even if it's a pretty good Sinker like that one nice piece of hitting there at the and to the plate is Will Smith bounce to the left side throw over to cronenworth and they get the out on Smith it's a good recovery though after giving up the Home Run not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one with that ripped towards third Machado throws the first in time and they get the out here's tasar Hernandez one run acrossing the frame so far bottom half of inning number [Applause] two and the pitch in the air pretty deep out to center field azocar drifts towards it he's there he's got it and that'll do it solo shot for the Dodgers this inning it's an early one nothing lead it's major league baseball and it's on the show and we're back on to the third inning now it's the switch hitting outfielder jerks and proar throws him with a back door slider oh man just locked him up at that slider even though caught a lot of the zone and I think that tells you all you need to know about what he was looking for in the box and it clearly was not that pitch and that one finds its way through so man aboard now with one away stepping in for San Diego Jose azukar the other way and it's stays fair lead Runner touches second headed for third oh he throws it away just a flare down that right field line and he got it to drop in fair I guarantee you he was yelling get down get down as he ran out of the box because Boo sometimes you just got to talk to him throws the first in time Bogart's retired so digging in now for San Diego Hung Kim pitch in the dirt two and one well he knows they don't want to give him anything to hit but when you've got opportunities to drive in runs you've got to expand the Zone he's capable of going out there and doing damage with it cuts and misses it's a strike out a lot of adrenaline we can see it right there and sometimes you just got to let it out that's an outstanding job of taking that executing and getting out of a tough [Music] [Applause] inning as we go to the last of the third here's Jason Hayward here's a 1-1 fouled off he was late he's dealing with a great two- strike hitter right here the strikeout is not [Applause] automatic left field and there's one away now batt Short Stop to the top of the lineup M bets now at the plate one down base is empty on the ground to third throw over to cronenworth And Betts is gone now it's the second baseman Gavin Lux two down nobody on and strike two one ball two [Applause] strikes out to short Kim with the throw to first and that is the third out of the and welcome back to the ball out to the fourth now the third base Manny Mach fast ball for a strike M Glass now ready to VI cut a Miss st came out Machado is gone there's one well that's always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead the count and as a pitcher really allows you to start expanding The Zone hitters become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and that's what leads to the strikeout Freeman steps on the bag and that quickly two away the catcher L comp and here's the catcher Luis cusano so now one and two through that fast right by him slightly elevated that's a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound see if he continues to climb the ladder fights that one away still one and two two down nobody on top half of inning number four swings through that one it's a strike out no runs no hits no errors we Midway in the fourth it's the Dodgers one back here in La John chy and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the Freddy freemanan the one-1 chopped to the right side Bogart's with the throw to first and a quick out number one here comes Chris Taylor and he deals swing and a ground ball out to short over to First and a couple of quick outs two outs Bas is empty Max Muny steps to the plate for the Dodgers on the ground right side tosses to First and it's a one two three inning back here at Chavez Ravine all set for the start of the inning stepping in for San Diego Jake Cronin up the middle fires to first on the Run that takes care of pronin word first of all that's just a nice job to even get to that ball and then even more impressive was the throw off balance had to try to in the air get his shoulders turned and make a strong throw does show off the strength of the arm we're usually used to seeing that kind of arm strength from the short stop one down base is empty picks up strike out number seven well he's on a great run of strikeouts and showing excellent controller Comm in not walking opposing batters you know this offense they've got to find a way to break his rhythm put the bat on the ball maybe try to BU for a base hit get him off the mound moving around step out something to interrupt his timing because he's coming right after these guys and here is to Capo Maro and it falls and that keeps the inning alive couple of hits in a row for him here you know what they say he couldn't have thrown it out there any better than that and certainly the case that time just flared it back behind the second base they take the force out and that is that he continues to roll on the mound as five shutout innings are in the books it's the bottom of the inning inning all over that one right there absolutely smoked that baseball what a swing sent it out way faster than it came in of course 113 off the bat and no matter where you hit it at that speed it's and there's two down [Applause] now it's the right fielder Jason Hayward comeb backer to the mound tosses to First gets him easily ends the inning and we're back all set for the top of the six here's the second Bas s Bogarts next offering in there for a strike and next strike two and misses it's a strike out oh I'm not sure what he was waiting on right there he got the change up and still late on it you rarely see that it almost makes you think that he was trying to set the pitcher up I mean if you can't catch up to the off speed stuff there's no way you're going to touch a fast ball and now it's going to be hung Kim on the ground to the left and that's just [Applause] foul foul ball still a war one and two count that one off the bad part of the bat just a Lazy Fly ball Hernandez pulls it in on the Run just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to left got it by him for the K so and go back to the ballpark bottom of the sixth inning and at the plate for the Dodgers Mookie Betts the pitch right side hard hit gathers and throws to first and that's one out as they get the lead off hitter in the six now the number two hitter Gavin Lux check swing he went too far and it's a strike one ball [Applause] St that's hard hit in the line and there's two [Applause] down two outs face is empty Here Comes Freddy Freeman up to hit two outs grab ball up the middle throw over to Cron worth and Freeman is retired three up three top of inning number seven and now the right fielder Fernando ta Jr spoils that one and it remains two and two looking to get the tying run on base and a swing to miss down on strikes and one away a big first down here in the seventh of the punch out yeah it just does so much to change the Outlook of an important inning like this get the lead off h so critical in setting the table when you got a now this one's crushed down the line hooking foul ball oh man that stay Fair we got a new ball game great swing just couldn't keep it between the lines he's got to try to bottle that do it again he's got to be frustrated with that call well definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn't look too convinced as he headed back to the Dugout you know those are tough ones to let go as a hitter but with the human ire calling balls in strikes it's always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes next for the Padres Jake Cronin work changing speeds has this lineup completely off balance in this one we've seen a lot of mistime swings and it's been a challenge for these hitters to get their Rhythm right trying to hold a one-run lead here in the top half of inning number seven swing and a pop off in foul ground m makes the catch and that's the third [Applause] out back here at Dodger Stadium bottom of the seventh now it's the Dodger cleanup hitter Chris Taylor flyball down the line and it falls that's a ball that a lot of times you'll see the short stop or left be able to get to if it hangs up in the air long enough but right there it just died and found a way to drop in on the green stuff but base hit great swing and solid contact just a little too quick he's got to stay back a little [Applause] longer right Ander kick deals swing and a miss struck him out now and now the catcher comes up to him Will Smith one run game one out one [Applause] on good eye right [Applause] there out to Center he's got got it two away down here's the center fielder James [Music] out two outs run around the goal next offering is foul [Applause] back here's a one two and another ball he's really working him away this bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield and the righty deals that one lace to Center in a base hit lead Runner makes the turn at second and that'll put Runners at the corners with two [Music] away here comes the and we're going to see a pitching change in this spot Michael King is done and as he heads off we'll step aside for a minute back with the new pitcher after this bre Johnny burrito comes on now just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game next to hit teoscar Hernandez next offering misses and now three balls and a strike laser could be extra bases one runs in headed for the plate the Run scores from first extending their lead three nothing show some really nice patience in that at B worked himself into a good count great Hands On That Swing took the barrel right to the baseball caught it off lied it into the gap that point thought be no question in his mind that he was going for two that's just a great feeling so runner at second two Down Jason Hayward steps to the plate for the Dodgers Tapper back to the mound sends it to first they limit the damage here but they'll pick up a couple of runs here both coming on this two-run double it's now 3 nothing it's Major League Baseball on the [Music] show we're at the top of the eighth profar climbs in on that left side and a swing to miss well after SCS this is where you're looking for that shut down inning get that hot team back in there to swing the bats connect on the curve ball struck him out pretty good break from the curveball right there maybe not as down in this Z as he would have liked but deceptive enough to get that swing and miss and if you don't catch that pitch out front on the barrel it bears in on you pretty hard to capita marcoo the next up for the Padres that's to third slings it across two up two down this pitcher has done a good job of disrupting The Hitter timing with the mix of pitches and changing speeds you want to keep that front foot inconsistent for the batter their swings are hesitant and that's exactly what you want on the [Music] mount Hammer face hit so now back to the top of the order he was all over that one just a cookie down the middle I mean those are the ones you dream about ones in the cage you're just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle not a whole lot of velocity right on top of it and here comes sander Bogarts and that one is lifted in the air outman under this one he's got it and that is that back here in LA out of the eight now at the plate mie [Applause] bets drilled out toward up center field that's well struck back there tattooed and gone a gigantic blast and they add to the lead it's four nothing that one just sounded different yeah it might have been the loudest moment yet man my ears are ringing I can feel that swing from the booth [Music] power versus Power right there like two locomotives colliding who's going to win a really good job there by The Hitter getting the Top Hand working how is that fast out of here and next for La Gavin Lu and another ball oh you just got to delete it you give up that lead off home run go back to work focus on this next [Applause] better gets to it with a slide gathers and throws and they get the out well Bo as an infielder you have to be ready for anything in that spoted going to the ground a little dirty and making a strong for the out great play that missed by a lot and it's two and one one out base is empty and a run in here the bottom half of the eigh [Applause] inning L drive base hit right center field so they get a man of board with a one out single well singy he is locked in there well he's really slowed the game down and it's like he's moving in full speed and everybody is a step or two behind the way that he squared up that b baseball tells me that he is seeing it like a beach ball Here Comes Chris Taylor headed down the line tatis snags it on the Run third number Ma and now it's Max M the one-1 smok to right center and this one's going to go out of here a massive home run his second home run of the game it's six nothing that was blasted absolutely no doubt off the [Applause] bat just an excellent swing all the way around and it has that sound coming off the back that gets everyone's attention got a pitch to drive short to the baseball squared it up and the Back Spin carried it is so the Padres with a new arm of the mound Tom cosbro he's into the game with the bases end here's the catcher to hit Will Smith next offering in there for a strike and the count one and two two [Applause] [Music] and the pitch and down on strikes he goes That's the third out but two round triers in this inning the long ball was working last chance we're back it's the top of the nine and there's a new pitcher on the M JP fire eyes and he's got a nice lead to work with so he should come in throwing strikes attacking these hits and a swinging a Miss there one ball clearly was sitting on a fast ball right there it just ended up out in front of the the slider hey you can't fault him for his commitment now he's just going to have to battle for two strikes oh nothing too fancy on the strikeout pitch right there just a low 9s fast ball and I'm not sure he was trying to challenge him but that's pretty much what happened very hitable location he found a way to just get it by him one ball had a tough day at the plate three strikeouts already it's hard not to think negative but you got to find a way to somehow Center up the baseball and put it in play got him looking that's a strike out so it's their last chance in this one now it's Fernando ta Jr offer in there for a strike one and two fire Rising is just one strike away knocks that one away and we'll do it again two down dolman on to the right side and it's through for a hit [Applause] just a simple ground ball the other way they had eyes on it man sometimes that's all you need to do just let the ball travel put the ball in play and just hope it finds a hole here's a two- two sends it to Center and that's going to do it he'll squeeze it for the final out and the Dodgers use two pitchers to combine for the shutout so many festivities and excitement around opening day it's great to come out and get that first one out of the way you carry that momentum into the second game of the year and you hope that it extends for a good period of time six nothing is how this one ends Dave Roberts and Company celebrate in The
