[Music] welcome everyone to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and gorgeous PNC Park the national Spotlight is on MLB The shows game of the week it's the Minnesota Twins going up against the Pittsburgh Pirates along with Chris Singleton I'm John chambi so the Pittsburgh Pirates have taken the first two games of this series and today they'll go for the sweep they played well Chris and they're looking for more the same in this one yeah they've been the side shaking hands on the field after each game so far played solid baseball to earn those wins as you said but every game offers up its own unique challenges so we'll see what those are today but there's always a little extra motivation when you have an opportunity to sweep a series all right we'll be back to get this one started after this so just about set now and today's starting pitcher Domingo Hermon well he's been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it's the release point maybe it's the motion but just some way somehow they've got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side now it's going to be edir Julien and that's outside and this one is off and running swinging a miss and the count one and one let's see if he's willing to use the whole field right here definitely pounding him away righty delivers swings through that one for strike two theast right by him slightly elevated that's a confidence boost for this guy out there on the mound see if he continues to climb the ladder the onew and it's skips [Applause] in oh can't pick it up cleanly and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score lead off Man Bo on the air and that puts your pitcher in a little bit of a tough spot right away to start the inning not where you want to be so we'll see if he's able to work around it and pick the defense up and here comes Carlos kareah three for seven in the series so far pickoff move to First Julien Dives back in safely this is a great Dynamic right here Speedy runner at first thinking about taking second catcher with the pop time that leaves Jaws on the floor this might get interesting boo late on that fast kareah measures 6' 4 in 220 lb and he's a former Rookie of the Year that seene there and that's strike two the pitch and that one hit to first there's one goes to Second safe [Applause] there now the lot for the twins as constructed by rockol baldelli this is a ball club that can really slug lots of homers lots of extra base hits and Chris that of course a huge part of sucess in the standings for this group well if you're going to be successful in today's game you've got to be able to hit the ball over the fence just they power is such a big part of the success that we see with the good teams in the league right now and even in the postseason Max Kepler at the plate Big Time power he's third in the a in home runs sharp grounder that's through for a base hit fires it to the plate it's off the mark and he scores well done drives in the not much to this one other than just a willing to go the other way and put the ball in play that's a team to fat right there nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep runner at first with two away here's Byron buckon collected three hits in the loss yesterday throw to first oh he safe [Applause] that misses the Zone one and0 clobber to right field way back G he sends it out of here that's his third home run of the series and they add a couple more it's three nothing Chris he's homered in backto back games now yep seeing the ball well and he's got his timing locked in he's looking pretty dangerous at the dish right now elevated fast balls especially away are like putting the ball on a te hitters do a lot of cage work they're comfortable Hitting off the t's he was comfortable right there hitting that ball opposite field for a home run two outs nobody on here's the veteran first baseman Carlos Santana foul ball and a pitch Santana swing and a drive this one deep got it bangs against the wall but holds on oh man amazing catch to end the inning as a former outfielder I'm feeling proud right now saw the wall didn't get afraid held on to the ball back here in Pittsburgh and towing the slab Pablo Lopez singy he's kind of a road warrior yeah I definitely say so you know some guys shrink a little bit on the road they're so used to just know having the Comforts of being at home and having the fans behind them but this guy seems to thrive in adversity and being in some hostile environment so when you have a player like this on your team that goes out there and competes you definitely like your chances away from your home ballar number 19 the leadoff batter as he swings through it for strike [Music] one bounce to Santana steps on first for the out batting here's a Pirates lineup now and one of the most exciting young stars in the sport O'Neal Cruz Tops on the team in batting average boo a guy who's showing off some excellent batto ball ability when he digs in at the plate you know that's useful if your team needs to get an inning going get a leadoff man on but it's also incredible to have a guy like that in the lineup because he's a run producer who can drive in runs if you got guys on base already so he's a huge piece in this lineup the twins leading by three here in the third and final game of the series gets a piece and stays alive man he'd like to have that pitch [Applause] back next offering misses now one and two he's dealing with a great two- strike hitter right here the strikeout is not automatic that one way inside the pitch Cs and misses it's a strike out thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we're seeing more fast balls in that location hits especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger ran here right through there for a strike and a foul [Applause] ball two outs spoils the two- strike pitch and he'll see another here's the 02 and ball one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and down on strikes and good work there as he gets a one two three nothing doing here for Pittsburgh they Trail in this one three nothing new inning getting started now the left fielder Matt Walmer line in the pitch gets him to chase after that one filling up the strike zone hasn't been the problem so far it's the quality of the strikes that's been the real issue and you look at the first inning that's what we saw too many pitches out over the [Music] plate the pitch oh one [Applause] foul ball still a one and two count gets a piece there we'll do it [Music] again the one two and he grounds one to the right side throw over to tles one up one down Brian Jeffers at the plate definitely scuffling at the dish lately only two hits over the last five games that one [Applause] missed now Fly ball to Right Center McCutchen has it sized up nabs it and there's two down two outs face is empty this is Willie Castro outside low and it's one and0 two out Bas is empty rolled to rowy he takes it himself to the bag and that'll do it back here at PNC park now at the plate O'Neal Cruz Lopez back to work swinging a Miss as he was late so O'Neal Cruz is named after Paul O'Neal that was his father's Idol in baseball so he named his son O'Neal in 2022 they finally met each other when the Pirates played the Yankees in New York and I'm sure that was a moment that O'Neal Cruz will never forget Lewis pulls it down one away so next to the plate for Pittsburgh Michael a Taylor and first offering is fouled off Lopez he gets a lot of swing and miss and he keeps the ball in the yard not to mention the fact not too many hits either late on that fast ball even some of the best guys in the sport are going to give up home runs from time to time and he's an exception yeah and even with those home runs if you're throwing strikes and keeping base runners off the paths then those home runs are Solo shots but to this point he hasn't had to worry about [Applause] it swing and a miss struck him out had him way out front of the slur off to a strong start singy as he's punched out three of the first five he's faced well he's definitely minimizing contact he can get the swing and miss when he needs it but he'll also keep the defense fresh behind him allowing some balls in play as well comes up empty that's strike two you look at what the elite pitchers do they strike hitters out they limit walks and they limit the ball going out of the park shots missed yeah all you want is a guy like that take the ball every fifth day go out there hand it over to the bullpen perhaps in the seventh inning or later next pitch is [Applause] outside Lopez gets the swing of the Miss and it's a one two three inning bucks go down quietly they Trail it here three on to the third inning here's the second baseman edir Julien and that's a base hit man aboard on the leadoff single well that'll make you feel good as a hitter right there just a cookie down the middle I mean those are the ones you dream about ones in the cage you're just hoping you get in the ball game right down the middle not a whole lot of velocity right on top of it that one is absolutely belted this one's got a chance great K retired and there's one away now here's Royce Lewis o for one with a fly out to [Applause] Center ball one no it's a pitch out nothing doing and that's ball one this might be a steel situation but that's not your average catcher behind the dish you have to be careful here kicks and fires missed with a change up two and0 Chris with that distraction and the Speedy guy at first he's did a favorable hitters count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in and that's a base hit they get it in quickly so first and second now one out seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there anytime you rip a line drive the other way you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that's great work right there and the batter now Max [Applause] Kepler little Chopper rolls [Applause] foul not even close there and the count one and two Julien at second Lewis at first one gone [Applause] that misses two and two two St [Applause] and there's a [Applause] ball and that'll load the bases it wasn't easy but he earned that walk after a long at back well that's a nice job of grinding out that at bat saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the walk very gritty and now Byron buckon he's already homered here in this one thought off foul in for a strike and it's 0 and two action in the pen down there Marco Gonzalez the left-handed relever appears to be getting loose catas warming up as well all loaded up dangerous hitter at the plate ouch that one drilled him whips it to first on the run to first and he beats it every once sa a run comes in on the play definitely some concern here that ball came back and got him right on the pitching arm as you can see him trying to shake it off and if nothing else you worry about him getting some dead arm and losing some feeling but from what I can tell I think they're going to let him continue and that's a really good sign so the bases are loaded here one man gone and here's the first baseman Carlos Santana foul ball [Applause] there lifted in the air right field Taylor under this one and he makes the catch all three Runners tagging up the tag gets him and it's a double play to end the inning base runner decided to test him and it was a bad decision outstanding throw on a frozen rope at home that'll end the inning with the bay and we're back bottom of the inning here's the Pirates catcher now Andy Rodriguez that one misses is ball [Applause] one the wi to kick the pitch swings through that one out in front that time two [Music] stength tapped Softly on the ground kareah on the Run throw to first not in time he legs it out a nice job getting there good throw but very difficult to get anybody on that one as far as you had to go and throw you know yeah no [Applause] question and Pablo Lopez will deliver swing in a Miss as he was out front that time that one down the line and it goes just foul the Pirates down by four here in the last half of the [Applause] third and that's off the Inside Edge ball [Applause] one swing and a miss for the strike out he notches strikeout number 150 this season well he's got great strikeout stuff on the M doesn't he I mean double digit strikeouts in his last start and he's just racking him up again in this one this guy can really dominate a game out there not a fun assignment for any lineup man it first and now it's Andrew McCutchen that one catches The Zone it's O and [Applause] one and a big swing in a Miss oh that's that slurp right there he threw it extremely well talk about just a ton of break so tough to get that Barrel [Music] to the one two just missed it's a good [Applause] take Lopez gets the swing of the Miss out number two interesting he's looking very comfortable out of the stretch after giving up the lead off single back to back strikeout so they haven't been able to move that runner up get him in scoring position and try to have a better chance of scoring I tell you good job so far on the mound he just needs one more out to the right side tosses to First that ends the frame Pirates leave one they're on the short end of a 4 nothing score as we go to the top of the fourth and now for the twins Matt Walmer and he deals swings through that one for strike one measures 6' 4 in 26 years old a former first round pick back in 2019 well he hasn't quite settled in out there four runs and three Innings he's going to have to have some quick one two three Innings to pitch deep into this ball game and that one hammered way back there and out of [Applause] here his 12th of the season it's five zip he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that's what he expects of himself at bat after it bat he's that confident Cruz out of first one away that ground ball may have him back on track after the Home Run it's a good recovery though after giving up the home run not allowing it to stay in the head but going to work at the next hitter and a tough one at that throws the first in time now it's the second baseman eduard Julien and a foul [Music] [Applause] ball and he hits a ground ball right side throw over to tles and that'll do it twins get one on this Homer and the lead is now 5 nothing you're watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show ready to go for the last half of the inning and now the DH Conor Joe and that one is lifted in the air huls it in for the out and a quick out number one digging in is the switch inning outfielder Brian Reynolds and first off ring is fouled off little Tardy on that fast ball is going to have to get it going a little quicker get that front foot down there's a swinging a Miss man he really sells the change up with that arm action right back to him on the mound tosses to First and they take care of Reynolds for the out two outs B is empty here's O'Neal Cruz [Applause] just off the outside edge and that's ball one two down nobody on we're here in the bottom of the fourth the bit behind with that swing it's strike one man he was really Tardy on that fast ball great job of setting him up by throwing the curveball add some velocity to it on the next pitch can't catch [Applause] up and another ball [Applause] and that's in the dirt and now three and two two down nobody on into Center and a base hit Michael a Taylor the next pirate to hit and first off ring is fouled [Music] kicks sandium and a swing in a miss and that's that so one left for Pitts we're back and there's a new arm on the mound to start the fifth Marco Gonzalez he's averaging more than one hit allowed per inning pitch this season that's not you want to be at all oh now this one's high and deep way back there on its way gone an absolute smash to left his ninth hom R of the year it's six nothing that's their third home run of the game they're having a lot of fun at the plate in this one they've got the long ball working for them on [Applause] autopilot welcome to the game first pitch out of the bullpen a tough one and you know he's just trying to get one in there for a strike and on the other side as a hitter it's a great time to be aggressive and Let It Fly it's not what they were looking for when they turned to him but now he's got to find a way to reset Roy Lewis the next twin up to [Applause] hit that's down and in part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning they're definitely looking to do some more damage he swings and fouls one [Applause] off the 1-1 and that one sliced foul the pitch and the one two misses to even the [Applause] count this one in the air drivs towards it he's there he's got it one down now and next for Minnesota Max [Applause] Kepler smok to right center and this one's going to go out of here a gigantic blast it's their second home run of the inning and they add a run it's seven nothing that's their fourth home run of the game they can't stop and they won't stop hitting home runs in this one boo they're clearly feeding off of each other at the [Applause] dish Byron buckon the next twin up to hit first pitch misses [Music] is one out base is empty and now the Lefty the punch out there two down now that high for seam f balls become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off they're trying to stay back with two strikes make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate good rotation through the Zone elevated a little bit get a lot of swings and misses and that's a really nice job right there and that one is lifted in the air pulls it down and he makes the cat and that is that but two round Trippers in this inning the long ball was working it's now 7 nothing Major League Baseball is on the show we head to the bottom of the fifth now Ry tles the first B Ry the right hander back to work that one ripped and it's off the [Applause] wall he needed that one it's been a tough stretch at the plate lately and anytime you smoke a ball off the wall you kind of think about what it could have been but obviously you have to be happy with that result you know these Pirates need to bring up the quality of their bats and specifically their swings they're trying to find ways to drive the ball with some Authority but it's just not happening for him so far zero extra base hits in the game so it's been tough for him to get anything going sit down on strikes Frozen with the heater at the knees now B at the plate for Pittsburgh Sergio alant and the first offering is not close sometimes you have to keep chipping away until you break through but it's a lot easier to put runs on the board when you have guys in scoring position because they put themselves there and a base hit and they'll have Runners at the corners after a one- out single just a solid swing right there caught it out front and into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game tles on third alcantra over at first with one away swings through it and that's a strike out well I think he was waiting on the change up right there and he got it and just drifted too far in on him I think that pitch is just a little more out over the plate probably squares it up but instead he's going to have to go take a seat number 19 stands now and watches strike one out to short K throws the first and that is that pirates strand a couple they continue to Trail 7 [Applause] nothing back here in Pittsburgh all set for the top of the six and now Matt Walmer first pitch not [Music] close wouldn't chase that time swing and a pop off in foul gra Al Contra drifts towards it makes the grab one down Ryan Jeffers digs in now smoked into left base hit so they get a man aboard with a one out single didn't take long to get a result for that at bat solid swing from start to end on time with everything really good balance nice extension and he made it out front for the line drive knock and here is Willie Castro and first off ring is fouled off [Applause] the pitch and a curve is down and [Applause] in on the ground two ball quickly to Second for one on to Tes and the double play ends the inning no runs one hit no errors and no one left two three4 do up in the home half of the six it's the twins seven and the Pirates nothing well we go bottom six now it's the DH Conor Joe that one out to right Kepler sizing this one up no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's one down here's the left fielder Brian Reynolds just [Applause] missed and it's foul away one down base is empty so a foul ball makes it one and two and that one off the out side edge really good take especially with two strikes and another ball 32 on the way keeps the Imp going with a foul [Music] ball swings and misses struck him out Chris third time through the order and a couple of quick outs for the starter yeah he's been very fral today economical with the pitch count next to bat will be the Pittsburgh cleanup hitter O'Neal Cruz and a good eye [Applause] there well struck right field that's back there and it hits the fence proves into second and he's got a double multi-hit game for him now and and with the lack of results he's been having lately I'm sure he's feeling some relief he hit that ball really well to deep right field right there got a pitch to drive and just stay through it nicely didn't quite have the trajectory to clear the fence but you're always happy with an extra base [Applause] hit misses inside two balls in a strike [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] on the ground and that's just foul runner at second two down here in the bottom of the six on the ground to third Lewis throws to First and that is that pirates leave one not go welcome back we're in the seventh we have a new pitcher on the mound roansy contras he's pitching on two days rest now now a screamer into the Outfield Taylor pulls that one down and there's one down here's Carlos kareah clearly ready to hit right there first pitch of the inning hits a bullet and it just is one of those bad luck abs and that one is lifted in the air calls it in two away now the third baseman Royce Lewis got it started a little too early strike one meanwhile activity in the bullpen Ryan barui the left-hander up and throwing Fleming getting cranked up as well and there's a foul [Applause] ball and here it comes that's to third throw over to tles and the inning is over and welcome back to the ballpark set for the last half of the seven at the plate for Pittsburgh Rowdy tles and he takes a strike I really like how he's been attacking hitters early in at bats he's thrown strikes on the first pitch to over 70% of the guys he's faced in this one and a foul ball righty to the plate goes down looking for the strike out fast at the letters Frozen for strike three well I think that's a case of overthinking right there you got three straight fast balls looking in the O2 count just to pour it back that one back up the middle and it gets through so man of Bo now with one away waste no time there just kept it simple plague Pepper with the middle of the field and took it back where it came from and there's just no one there to knock it down out contr batting with one down takes a [Music] [Applause] strike and a pitch got it by him for the K he had him out in front which isn't easy to do against a hitter like this known for using the entire field just couldn't sit back long enough on that swung on popped up on the infield Santana settles underneath it brings it in and that is the third out of the inning back here at PNC Park ready to begin the eighth now the Minnesota cleanup hitter Max keer cras back to work swinging a foul straight back [Applause] there's a swing and a try that one's carrying and out of here another Homer his second home run of the game it's 8 nothing that's their fifth Homer of the game man they're all getting into the action it's starting to feel like a home run derby up here it's like he's playing whiffle ball up there and that's typically not the easiest way to hit a home run the slight opposite field into the Gap man making it look easy that's for sure and that one ripped into right Taylor makes the catch one away man he smoked that fast ball he's all over it it's just frustrating when you can't get it to fall maybe next time I'll heill find a hole Sant the next to hit takes outside ripped to the right center base [Applause] hit so man aboard Matt Walmer the next twin up to hit that one ripped right center field that's back there [Applause] G he'll Circle to Bases he's done it again his second Homer of the game and they add on it's 10 nothing that one was a hanger and pitchers typically don't get away with making a mistake like that and Ryan barup into the game he's got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard just doesn't have the same intensity to it but he's got to find a way because these batters count the same for a stats obviously regardless of the score swing in a Miss no balls two strikes it might be time to choke up a little bit get that front foot down early maybe even just spread out he's really late right now he's got it and there's two away Willie Castro the next twin up to hit Willie Castro that to right and no one can get to it it's a foul ball two outs now a bullet to second base but he's got it to end the inning but two round Trippers in this inning the long ball was working it's now 10 zip back after this on the show and we're back and now number 19 the second they go with one of their more experienced arms in this spot Steven o and you know Bullpen guys can struggle sometimes when they're called upon with big leads because it just doesn't have the same intensity as a tight game so we'll see how sharp he is your mental toughness matters in situations like this as well and the pitch and a foul [Applause] ball late with the swing there I think he was sitting off speed there ball two strike and one and two his understanding the strike zone very impressive that was a very close O2 fast ball I just don't know how you take that and another ball two ball two strik that one misses and the Count's full that's a good at bat right there he was down early in that plate appearance works the walk man at first to the plate now for Pittsburgh is the DH Conor Joe the twins up big in this one here the bottom half of the eighth inning well the late off man gets on you want to minimize the threat by playing sound defense hopefully the pitcher can get a ball on the ground and they can roll him up for two fast ball for a strike swings through that and it's a strike out now one away now the left fielder Brian Reynolds that Clips the [Applause] corner fought off foul here comes a pitch just misses with that one the pirates with a lot of ground to make up here in the third and final game of the [Applause] series that one misses two balls two strikes just missed [Applause] on the ground to the left and foul ball at the belt and fins bouns it back with two strikes eighth pitch of the at back coming up fights it off you'll see [Applause] another foul ball left side he'll see [Applause] another the pitch foul ball and it remains a Full [Applause] Count outside and that is ball four that's a great at bat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk you go that deep into a bat The Hitter usually comes out on top one down and next will be the cleanup hitter O'Neal Cruz drove it Off the Wall last time just missed out on a home run splits the plate and it's O and one and that's in there at the knees well he didn't like those first two pitches now in an 02 hole he's going to have to battle hope he gets a mistake pitch misses and it's one and two Runners at first and second with one gone that one just misses sometimes you got to fight to get back into an advat take some tough pitches even out the count ground ball left side on a second they get one double play and that'll do it for the inning this one pretty well decided at this point ninth inning coming up it's the twins 10 and the Pirates [Applause] nothing we go to the N here's the second baseman Edward Julien the wine of the pitch ball one low [Applause] a swing and a miss and that's strike one this gu got such a good Sinker as a hitter you got to look up in the zone if you look down you're going to be chasing stuff in the dirt strike two that pitch started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track oh and that liner got him can't pick it up with the bare hand safe at first no play we'll see how they score this that one got him pretty good but perhaps the Silver Lining is that it got him in his non throwing on Chris yeah assuming there's nothing broken in there I think he should be able to shake this one off but man that can't feel good it's going to have a pretty nice bruise at the very least that's for sure now kareah up to hit he's already homered in this game up the middle feeds to Second out there double play that was some defensive Wizardry sometimes double plays get turned so quickly that you don't really get to appreciate all of the finer details and how these guys execute them right there really nice footwork and a good feed to Second was the key to pulling it [Applause] off two down nobody on would chase that [Applause] time and another [Applause] ball slider for a Strike wow just a beautiful back door slider right there you got any chance of hitting that pitch you have to wait till the absolutely last millisecond just a t to hit and not an easy one to throw either the throw in in there [Applause] safely with a pitch away that's exactly what you want to do with it drive it the other way and right there just barely able to keep it fair down the line for the double and next will be the cleanup hitter Max Kepler he's provided a couple of memorable moments already today yeah boo two impactful home runs and the second one game of the eighth inning this guy's swinging a red hot bat in this [Applause] one that one fouled off Yan foul ball and the pitch that one not close one and two the count two outs and one in scoring [Applause] position swung on beled that's back there gone and he's gone yard again that's his third home run of the game and they tack on to their lead it's 12 nothing singing he's been red hot yeah another big swing of the bat for him man he is really seeing the ball well in this one he's putting on quite the show at the dish here in this one and he's just so locked in with this swing and he's just not missing right now a three Homer game man it's so special and I tell you what it's a lot of fun watching him pull it off as [Applause] well now here is Byron buckon Outfield blink very deep not wanting anything over their heads swing in a Miss as he was late oh and [Applause] one swings through that one it's a strike out but two come across to score in the inning courtesy of this two-run Homer we head now to the bottom of the ninth you're dialed into the show back here in Pittsburgh and now the right fielder Michael a Taylor coming out of the bullpen for the twins Cole Sands compared to some days this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him so he should be fairly free and easy out there still have to keep yourself sharp and attack the strike zone pitches in there that's strike one [Applause] swings through that one quickly in an 02 count you got to figure out a way to shorten your path to the baseball put it in play somewhere then you got a chance one ball two strikes count and a ball and two strikes swings and misses and one out now well we saw a solid effort out of their starter and the bullpen is following suit just a good day as a manager or as a pitching coach when you can hand the ball off to multiple arms and get stability from all of their performances one down base is empty foul back ourway and that's out of [Applause] play foul ball still o and two very dominant with that fast ball inside hitters going to be conscious of that now you have the outer half of the plate to work with out there on the mound hit in the air right field Kepler settles underneath it makes the grab for the second out maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit couldn't quite Barrel it up enough to really drive it last chance now for the Pirates so next to the plate for Pittsburgh Andy Rodriguez two down nobody on we're in the last half of the ninth inning right through there for a strike no two count both pitches on the inside part of the pl hitter is thinking I don't want to get beat here this is a good time for something off speed the Pirates down to their final strike and a swing and a miss and that is the ball game well I don't know if they did in the cage today or on the field for
