Ohio State Football: Ryan Day And Captains Jack Sawyer And TreVeyon Henderson Ready For Action

Introduction and Opening Remarks all right folks lightning round Steve hellwagon back got some packets no nothing longterm uh there might be a couple that uh were evaluating towards the end of the week but as of right now nothing long term I mean TC cafy you know yeah Kellan Stitz Player Evaluations and Updates who oh gez um he's um been consistent he's U been very workmanlike since he's been here um he's he's you know played strong and physical in the Run game but uh you know he's shown to be a deep threat down the field um mature Beyond his uh years and uh he's he's embraced special teams when asked there so um excited to see you know how he looks on Saturday and and you know start his career Tony German I think he's an example of somebody who had an opportunity and really stepped into that opportunity and uh took it and ran uh it wasn't easy early on I think the first week as he made that transition being forced into a role with the ones and blocking Tai Hamilton and Ty leak and and some of our guys up front uh but he made that adjustment quickly and um you know he kind of got you know thrown into the fire and because of that he became a better player for it and that's that's an example for our entire staff that you know some of these guys we got to build depth we got to get them in the game and allow them to play Austin's an example of that Austin Ward right the podcast you talked about quarterback run game yeah how much do you at all I guess think Quarterback Strategies and Game Plans about the level of opponent or how early is in the year does it change the game plan at all do you scale it back early or do you just have to go well treat it like any other one at this time of year I mean I think if you remember what we did with Justin field is probably similar to that um there's always going to be part of the game that uh you know will can and all the quarterbacks can make an impact with their feet how we design that uh you know we'll we'll determine that on a week- toe basis based on our opponent schematics um situation in the game where we are uh down in distance you know red Zone there'll be a lot of things that come into play but you know the quarterbacks can have an effect with their feet even in the the you know the passing game scrambling those those type of things so um there's a lot that comes with that part of it but um you know on a week- toe basis you know we'll tailor it based on the opponent Andy Anders over to your left coach yeah Ryan tight ends where do you think stand is G expected to start Tight Ends and Special Teams on Saturday and is Joan gonna mix in pretty yeah we are going to try to roll the tight ends the best we can we think that they all deserve to play I think they've built some depth in that room excited to see how they they play on Saturday but um you know we accept expect those guys to play there'll be multiple groupings going in the game as well um so they'll all have their opportunity and it's just to start on Saturday but uh but again another group that has has come on in the preseason now it's time to go put it on the field Ryan do you decision uh yeah we did um you know JB uh is going to um you know take the first kickoff return and and Carell is also going to be right there those are our two guys there um we're a little bit by Committee in the back U Back In on punt returning Brandon Andis is there Mecca's there um you know we have a few guys back there we can use um you know I think you'll see a couple of them there but in terms of kickoff return Jaden Ballard we do the first um the first kickoff we'll go from there ran this is the first time I think Team Standards and Expectations in your 10 that you not playing Marquee non-confidence opponent um you got three games we put with favorites you got a I see a very talented team is there partner you would like to maybe have them be challenged more early but how you going to manage this because real well again you know it's coach speak for a reason but it's true uh it's it's about our standard and what is our standard we want everybody to grade out over 80% you've heard us talk about that Champions and and that's that's a big part of it and then be the hardest playing team in the country so um if if it's truly not about our opponent and we really Embrace that then it shouldn't matter um you know we have to respect everybody we play against it we have to respect the game we have to respect the fact that we only have 12 Saturdays in the regular season every year I mean the these are precious opportunities for all the work that goes in you know uh to think that you know u a game would be under value I mean that that that's not even on anybody's radar right now you know we have a certain standard that we have to play with we want to come into this game and and you know set the tone for the season you that that's our goal and then we come in on Sunday and figure out what's right but um every season is different you know this this season is what it is and um but that doesn't change our approach into the first game um other than you know you just have a different group of guys out there and I think with this group we do have some experience guys that have played a lot of football we also have some guys we're excited to see on the field you know you got guys like will Howard and Caleb DS and um you know quinan junkins and you know some guys that we haven't seen will casmer um so I think we're all excited to see what those guys look like in a game and see how they Jael with the team specifically the guy got here I'm not sure he expecting to be here more than three years but now he's taking over room he's clearly the old guy in the room how have you seen him grow as a Leadership and Player Development leader in way that's made him a captain how do you think this offense with Chip Kelly being a put it maybe helps maybe accuate what he is I don't think anybody forgot about what a great player Mecha buuk is but seeing him out there healthy is just so exciting and it's so energetic for our entire offense it it just is I mean he's a warrior he's a great player and and so um not only do people feel his play out there but they also feel his maturity he's been like that since he's got here though you know this is not one of those things where he just matured over the last couple years he came in the grown man and he's continued to have an impact on the entire team and nobody was more frustrated than him last year not being able to be 100% so um it was great to see him elected a captain especially you know we had a lot of guys that could have been Captain but but great to see him um elected Captain by his peers and I know he's excited to be 100% going on on Saturday and um you know start the season off the right way it's three days till the opener just you've heard fires remor I'm wonder if you're having hce Chip Kelly you know what I mean it's three days he's gonna be call what I'm saying yeah right are you still getting used to that in your brain how different is that going to be for you I'm excited I excited it's um I'm I'm you know again we got a long way to go and there's a lot of storms coming and you know nothing's going to be easy it just isn't that's just the way the game of football is but I do like the way the offensive staff has come together I like the way they're working Coaching Staff and Team Chemistry together uh chipa has been great with the staff you know he's he's got ideas he's got a different perspective you know things are going to look a little different but he's also embraced who we are as an offense and what we do I think Brian Hartline has been unbelievable just in the day-to-day and what he brings and and Justin fry and um you know he and Tim drno they've done a nice job working together Keenan Bailey Carlos llan I mean I think it's a good group together I think we all worked well together um but you know it's going to be a long road so that chemistry is going to be very important but um on the defensive side again I I feel that same chemistry I think you know the staff is strong right now and it has to be because you know we're in for a long road here last question Cameron te Robinson as um it does allow you to step back and and just perceive things differently you just notice things different you're able to put your arm around some players and have a conversation with them uh much more involved in special teams which has been exciting and that allows me to coach some of the guys on defense I think the guys feel that part of it um being able to sit in on other meetings has been good even if you know I don't have a lot of input just to be in the room and and um give a little feedback here and there even on the defensive side to say you know here's how the offense is approaching this this is this is that perspective so that's been great um a little bit more time to myself where I can get my thoughts together on how I want to message the team and areas that I want to make sure I'm challenging the staff with and the staff meetings um so I think all that's allowed me to to to do that which um you know and you know and I think it's it's helped the team out I think it's helped the culture out I think the coaches um you know feel good about that part of it but um but but chip is has been great and you know there's there's a lot of input from everybody on that staff together I think that's what makes great chip a great coach is you know he he he trusts his staff and the guys that are around him but he also is firm when he believes in something great coach thank you very much thanks guys yep no problem see you guys folks we have a meca abuka on the Player doing good man good I just had one one question for you yeah in the spring before after before lck came Ryan was in the running back yes what was that like and and how how different was that seeing him as a position coach instead of head coach oh that was no that was really good I ain't going to lie he got some coach J he had some stuff in his bag some drills and and everything man and just uh man no it was amazing man he taught us so much during that small period of time you know just about the running back position about shoot the offense offensively and so no it was good do you have in that time do you get a different relationship with him when's in the room you do maybe when he's just overseeing everything um kind of yeah pretty much the same thing for real man coach dve such a great Coach man such a um players coach you know it's bigger than it's bigger than football you know with him you know does a good good job of just establishing relationship with his players and just checking on them outside of football and um off the field so I don't know we'll see man we'll see you know you just don't want to say no I don't know they really hav come with some guys n no sir all right well up to as As game all that it's been great man you know he's he's a hard worker man he he comes in you know trying to get better each and every day we pushing each other encouraging each other man and so yeah I'm I'm thankful that he's here man and just to be um playing alongside of him man such a such a great player in in a person you said ma it's been so good man just with Coach lock having coach lock in the room man he does a good job just um keeping us close together man so no it's it's been amazing man our bond you know God has brought us so so closely together man did you I think we we did huddle we did huddle yeah um with this with this offense uh helps me catch my breath so that's a good thing about it yeah catching my breath so yeah days yeah in the man um will has been great man s such an um good person man good quarterback man he's gonna be really good for this team and a good leader too and um he's he's been doing a good job man it's just communicating making plays you know on the field and you know pushing us each and every day to get better man so know will is going to be great here Sean stepping what's kind of stood out about the way he's kind of had a voice in the room because he's an experienced guy he's class but he's you know new guy at Ohio State so what kind of voice do you think he's had kind of in the locker room and in running backs room uh I think the guys man respect Quin Sean a lot man I think the biggest thing about him is they see how he came in and bought into the Brotherhood man so that's that's the biggest thing and just like being here you know we welcome him with open arms man so that's the thing right there I feel like the guys when he speaks you know they listen they show him a lot of respect you talk about you noticing pretty early on the way he was able to buy in I guess what what stood out early on like how did you how could you tell that he was buying into what Ohio State you know stands for Sho you know he wanted he wanted to learn you know came in asking questions trying to get trying to get things right you know just seeing the way we do things and you know he did it so obviously last year it seemed like you few things on the table you know I meanu what's your take right here before the jump on what this off is going to be all about shoot we we'll see man um we just we we come in each and every day um like like coach D said you know trying to stack those bricks and um climb up that mountain man so and I think that's right you know just coming in you know with the right mindset trying to put in work each and every day and get better as um as a team so but compliment one another like some things that you may not be able to do as well as him and vice versa uh shoot I don't know we'll see where has James stepped up pramp it seems like he's emerged that thir running back yeah man James has been so good man he's man he's a uh he's a really good person man good player and he comes in every day you know just trying to get better you know he kind of reminds me a lot about myself in some way man just his hunger and everything just coming in he's he's going to be a great player here man he's continuing to buy in you know to what we're doing here and you know where we're trying to go and you know he's he's going to be a huge part of this offense and yeah you said good person too what stood out about his character off the field uh man he he just brings so much joy man he's a he's a funny dude and uh man yeah I just I just love him man as a brother man I got you know just just a chance you know I knew James when he was recruited and so we talked a little bit and just like being here man just being able to um you know help him and serve him you know as the Lord calls me to do it's it's been good man the conversations that we had you know just off the field and so just being able to um be there for you know when he when he needs me you know I'm just thankful for that CBS everybody sees him as AER how does the impact affect the running game running game yeah how does how does a guy like Caleb Downs affect what you guys want to do on the how do he know oh man Caleb DS he's a good player man I'm so glad you know he's here man he's he's been really good for the defense man and um yeah man he's he's he's all around the field you know making plays in the rank Game Pass game everywhere man he shows up everywhere as a captain um Jesus teaches greatness is serving and so I just you know I think for me you know I just want to be you know the Lord's humble servant and just be able to serve others you know the players on my team you know however I can do so and be the captain that the Lord wants me to be and so you know it's a um big responsibility you know the biggest thing is just like um that I pray on and that the Lord helps me to remember is that you know I'm trying to please him and not others and so you know just keeping my eyes on the Lord and um continue to allow him to work on my heart to be a better um teammate Captain for my team I think that's it's it's it's G to be really good manal for you got here to be a leader captain of his team uh shoot not really man it just yeah not really man I'm just so thankful you know that uh God has placed me in this position and that my teammates you know they they pick me to to be in this position and um yeah I'm I'm just so thankful man and just being in this position like I just want to be able to bring glory to the lord's name and so like I said man just leaning on him you know it's tough man it's tough uh being a captain because every day you know you got to come in and people are looking at you to um do things right and so um there's been days where I struggled and um just got in a secret place with the Lord and just asking the Lord to for help you know and um he he he bought me through man and he's continuing to make me a better person a better teammate in his first Saturday uh I don't even think we talked much about that yet yeah I don't know how much we talked about that we so locked in there right now man it's just when that time comes it comes man but yeah what would you tell him about you know the atmosphere of what is going on on Saturday com uh it's exciting man it's exciting especially first game being back in the shoe um the walk and seeing the fans and everything you know it's it's a huge environment so yeah I'm man I know he's going to be so excited yeah shoot man um you know it's it's a long season and so I think the biggest thing is that uh we're trying to do as a team you know this year it's not looking too far ahead and just take it one game at a time you know I think that's the biggest thing right there man let's like let's just focus on akan and Marshall then the next game then the next game and then um eventually like we'll get there man we'll get there but just every day just trying to focus on one day at a time putting in the work and um preparing for the opponent you know we have each week all right thank you appreciate y'all Final Thoughts and Closing walk and talk she's got to get out here Lally toid it was funny was last for you to get so uh it meant everything to me uh you know it's one of the one of the most special moments my life you know something that you know I dream dreamt of since I committed here so um you know for it to you know to happen the way it happened it was awesome and uh definitely one of the one of my favorite moments in my life so yeah you know I just think that uh you know coach Mick always says leaders have to be heard seen and felt um so I think that this whole offseason you know um with the team we got I know that you know with great leadership that we can go we can go as far as we want you know so uh you know I just try to take that leadership role you know in the weight room and off the field and outside of the Woody so uh you know it's been great you I think a lot of guys done a great job as well back yeah you know I think I think yeah I think we feel really good I think we're in a really good spot and you know we're all just choing out the bit to get on the field this Saturday and you know we can't wait to put our product on the field um you know it feels like a long time coming like you said you know when we we all decided to come back and then we got you know the big pieces we added and um you know the offseason we've had you know it feels like a long time coming you know building to this point so you know we just can't wait to put on the field Saturday handling the expectations you know I think we're handling really well I think we got a lot of a lot of mature guys you know we know the expectations you know you know we're the Buckey and even more so this year they're when who came back and the guys we got in a portal and guys we've had a freshman that we've had it uh you know when you have expectation that means you know people expect things from you so um you know we know it's a you know it's a blessed position for us to be in anybody in the country want to be in our position uh so you know we're taking it day by day and we're really excited for this season uh yeah you know I think that uh you know ending the season the way it did you know it sucked losing but uh you know obviously like you said you know playing pretty well definitely gives you a little boost going an offseason you know I think that you know my confidence grew uh the whole second half of the season I think I've played my best football since I've been here so I'm just really excited to you know after a long offseason a lot of hard work we all put in um you know we're all in a really great spot and I think that you know it's gonna you know you guys will be able to tell you know very very very early on on this game come Saturday yeah I mean he's he's a guy who the minute he came here you know he's just so mature for his age and uh you know super hard worker always in the Woody always studying something super smart you know I feel like he diagnosed his play so quick from the saintes position so I think he just brought another you know it's it's he's only a sophomore but he's such a veteran guy already um so he just brings more you know that that veteran Savvy that we need for this defense so I think he's been great you just team yeah I mean will he's a you know he's a big dude uh 64 235 240 uh can run and uh you know he's a great he's a great guy off the field you know he jailed really well in this locker room from the minut he step foot on campus so that was no problem for him at all and I'm really excited to see what he brings this Saturday and you know he's put in a lot of hard work uh you know super team first guy and uh an excellent player from what I've seen so I'm really excited for him to him to get on the field Saturday yeah I think it gives me a lot of confidence um I think for a lot of guys that we we started playing you know our best ball especially on the defensive side of the ball um that's second half of the season and uh so we're just all excited like I said you know uh you know just chomping out the bit to get to Saturday you know we can't wait to put the pads on being in the shoe with the you know 100 plus thousand fans and you know put on a good performance said that three def you're chasing Perfection what does that look like on Saturday yeah um you know we've talked a lot about shutouts and I'm not going to say that you know that's an expectation but you know we think that our defense is good enough to go out there and you know and and win the game for us you know and there's nothing wrong with saying that because that's why we came back came back to be the best defense in the country and I think that uh you know the expectations got to be super high for us we got to hold each other high standard which we have and uh you know I'm just really excited to see you know it all come together in a in a game format against somebody else other than our offense shut out of that something you guys yeah and that pissed us off too they getting them three points up but uh you know we're really excited for the opportunity to you know hopefully get one of those this year you really yeah you see GR just been the last several months what do you see about him from a desire standpoint you know as I was asking the other day it's kind of impossible ask you got to have a pen State game every yeah I'd say so where's he primed I me where's he primed differently I guess going into this season yeah I mean he's just you know JT's just you know he's taking that next step uh he's super focused in you know this all this whole offseason we've been really doubed in and trying to pinpoint stuff that we can get better at you know and specifically attacking and and really trying to you know focus in and get better on those things I think that he has uh he looks great you know this whole fall camp and leading up to this game uh so far this game prep week so uh he's definitely taken you know huge strides and uh you know it I think a lot of people would give him unfair criticism too because they do all expect him to have a pen State game every game which is you know that's one of the best defensive games anyone's ever played uh so it's unfair to say that but he's been consistently one of the best defensive ends in college football if you turn on the tape so I'm really excited to get out there with him this year and uh you know wreak some Havoc off that edge yeah you feel like this is year comes to fruition from the standpoint right dominance I don't know I put that word what's your what's your sense of that yeah I mean no that's the that's something we talk about I think that's something all four of us and you know really eight of us on the D line talk about is you know being dominant uh you know there's no ceiling to how good we can be this year and we know that it's all about us going out there and doing it um you know we can talk about it all day but until we go out there and do it uh you know it doesn't mean a damn thing so you know we're all excited to get out there man we're hungry and uh you know I've seen us a different level of determination you know the chase greatness than I've seen since I've been here so uh you know like I said we're just you know we just can't wait for sat to never underestimate yeah team you got a couple other non-conference games you're not playing Notre Dame this year you're not playing like that what's the challenge when you when you're probably not going to be tested the way team what's the challenge know I think the challenge that uh you know we're playing a an opponent's coming into our house in the shoe this week we only get eight shots left in the shoe and we got to make every one of them count and aran's a good football team um you know uh good good head coach I believe he was the offensive coordinator for Oregon when they beat us here my freshman here uh you know so they're going to be well coach are going to run their offense well and you know play good defense so uh to us you know and Coach Day always says it's never about our opponent it's always about us um you know if we're execu at a high level and playing fast and physical then you know things will take care of itself so uh we got a good opponent acur and you know we're excited playing this Saturday B plays even on defense BL you guys playing a little more sound I guess sort of thing this year Jim just talked about opening up opening up again running more blitzes does that bleed into how you are playing along the defensive line is there more of an emphasis on attacking the line of scrimmage playing aggressive down yeah I know I think that uh I think that uh you know huge emphasis this fall camp and leading up to this season is to you know kind of let us play more downhill more free with less thinking so I think that's been great honestly the last few weeks and um you know in in the camp as well and so you know I think that we are going to you guys are going to see a more downhill team and uh you know more of Us coming off the edge and wreaking half like you guys all want to see so um I think that you know we're really excited to go out there and you know and and and roll it out there and play so you know we're really excited for that watch on no I haven't watched it yet I got no comment on that um I think that this offseason was big for me and and uh you know getting my body right um I think that you know I don't really like to talk about myself but I think that I'm a little more exposive than I was maybe in years past and uh you know I'm just really excited um for the work that we put in I think all of us have grown in so many different areas with our hands and hips across the defensive line so um you know like I said just just super excited for Saturday I just I just want to get a little more leaner uh you know really work on that and and just work on my technique you know my stance my get off and stuff like that of that nature uh for the defensive line so I think that I have and I'm you know I'm excited to put on put on the field Saturday yeah I think that when you come in here and you know you're an 18-year-old kid just leaving high school that there's a ton of things you can learn you know just as becoming a man and and on the field in the Woody as well and you that's why I tell these young kids now is that you know you got to make the main thing the main thing make football the main thing and uh you know and everything else will take care of itself so I think that uh you know coming in as we were all highly recruited too you know didn't help uh with our expectations and how it really how it really goes when you first get here so I think that uh you know when you get you're used to starting and playing 80 snaps of game since you were five years old when you first get here and uh you know you don't really see the field much as a freshman kind of just kind of takes you back a little bit um but you know the growth that we've all had you know we all just laughing about that actually it's a great question because me and Ty and JT were watching film us our freshman year we're like holy we came a long way you know what I mean so uh you know it's been good uh being able to you know grow up with those guys and you know see the maturity level that we've all grown to from our freshman on the football field and off the football field has been great and uh you know it's it's funny it comes full circle so uh it's been awesome it's been phenomenal all right thank you guys have a good one
