USC vs GA Southern

[Music] [Music] [Music] the Los Angeles colosia once home to the Olympic Games and many of the most memorable moments Sports and also home to the USC Trojans who are prepared to fight on once again today there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the Sunbelt the Georgia Southern Eagles taking on the fifth ranked team in the land the USC Trojan for EA Sports college football ree Davis with you alongside David poan Jesse Palmer time to get this game started and the Trojans will get us started with the opening kickoff and he takes this from inside the five and the coverage team able to make the tackle so the Georgia Southern Eagles return team didn't help matters out much there and there he is a man who makes an entire Stadium hold its breath every time he touches the ball Jesse this defense better have a lot of breath in this game too cuz he gets better as the game goes on he's the kind of guy David who can wear a defense down and he is the primary focus that's what this defense's Focus can keyed in on we got to stop him if we're going to have success today works his way into the traffic and picks up three to the 17 so guys over the last few years there have been seismic changes to college football realignment name image of lightness but one of the biggest changes the transfer portal yeah and now guys that are unhappy are in a situation where they see something that they'd rather be in now you can leave and there is no penalty so a lot of recruiting Jesse on other people's teams that go on throughout a season yeah it's 365 and it's a lot of pressure on coaches to re-recruit their own players as well to try to keep those rosters intact but the transfer portal completely flips rosters upside down one team that struggles this year if they get one key addition it's a team potentially competing for a national championship next season they'll run it out of the shotgun they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one this crowd going to try to make life miserable for these guys they'll run it from the gun and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop Georgia Southern brings on the punt team he'll bring it back it's branch makes a move man oh man did that coverage team have its hands full well well not full because they didn't get a hand on him for quite a while great return [Applause] [Music] there the Trojans offense will have its first position session of the game here are our impact players for this game and it goes beyond executing an assignment to make an impact in the game yeah obviously we were talking to both coaching staffs this week and we asked them who needs to step up and play while they immediately pointed to these guys right here they are the key for their respective teams yeah and they don't always show up in the Box Score but these are the guys of the leaders these are the guys getting everybody organized and have to play well for their team to succeed top physical hard no running gets it to the 34 they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three from the gun running back gets to give brought down just outside the Red Zone he moves the chain at at the 22 they move the chains on the ground now another first down dropping back it's Moss a shot toward the end zone and he's got it touchdown Southern cow and what a nice start for this offense the throw game getting working getting the touchdown pass this quarterback getting a little bit of confidence this passing game getting in a rhythm nice start for this offense almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown here he comes from inside his own five and the coverage team gets the returner On The Ground Georgia Southern has it back and here comes the offense Again David the punter got some work last time they'd like to keep him on the sidelines in this drive yeah it's not something you want to say very often you don't want the punter out there this offense needs to get back lathered up and get a little bit more of a rhy best way to do that identify where your best players are and just get them the football give these guys some touches to Kickstart this offense they'll go to the ground navigates that massive bodies and gets four out to the 17 Georgia Southern in a hurry out of the gun they'll run it inside nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry Georgia Southern brings on the punt team this will be the second time they've had to kick it away he only needs a sliver of daylight and the returner will be brought down this Trojan offense is ready to go back to work Jesse a very productive Drive last time wound up with a touchdown yeah mixing and matching play calling really well nice balance on that last one day we'll see what they can do here in this next Drive yeah and I don't expect anything different when you put together a drive like that I would do more of the same keep the pace keep it going they'll pick up four second and Six coming that's a really nice play it's impressive R it's first down the defense thinks you might be running the football you still can line up you can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little crease for your running tackle was made after the first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs they'll throw it on first down grabbed in the back field it's Robinson they get him on the ground and with that we'll head to the second quarter as we head to the quarter break it is USC holding the lead we've played one before we move on let's have a look at the [Applause] stats starting off this quarter close enough to smell the goal [Applause] line now the quarterback changing the original play call some early movement along the offensive line and they'll walk it back false start off so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty the Trojans trying to get a touchdown on first and goal looking to throw it's Moss that's a fly it's incomplete he was shooting for the end zone right there defense rolls up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he's looking to throw he's got it on the Move That completion will take it inside the four and the offense is threatening how many chances can you afford to waste in the Red Zone they've already been stopped twice can they come through this time it's third and goal the aerial assault continues he got it and he will score touchdown USC one thing this team has shown early this year it does not take them long to find their footing they get off to fast starts that was critical for them winning their first game and you've seen it here in this one too they show up ready to go there's no sleepwalking I think you got to give this coaching staff a ton of credit for putting their players in good positions to have success nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Georgia Southern has it back ready to go to work on off offense now we'll get a chance to see if they can answer that last score trailing by 14 Jesse Yeah and at this point of the game I feel like offensively you should go back to what's been working for you in this game don't be afraid to dial up plays that you've already had success with running it throwing it it's okay to repeat plays down 14 at this point and I would also say Palmer kind of understanding that my defense is not playing great so I know offensively I got to put some good possessions together here make something happen on this side of the football and he's not going to make it the defense denying in the first down Georgia Southern brings on the punt team he'll bring it back it's branch touchdown Trojans the special teams with a special moment the at unit on the field and the extra point is true and the lead balloons to 21 let's go to the studio now and check in with Kevin Connor Kevin what do you got all right philis here's a final update on a top 15 cled Michigan came through with a lunch paale hard hat performance and the end result is an eye opening Road Victory and it's not so much that they won it's more how they won and the fact this wasn't ever really in question iron sharpens iron and you just know a top 15 matchup like this is going to go a long way in telling the story of each of these team Seasons yeah how about that sounds as if they had a good ball game there Kevin thanks for the update re snap in quarterback trying to get a read pass the first down marker and still running ball is free oh the offense very fortunate to fall in that football it's so hard to force fumbles and when you do you so badly want to get him you're crawling you're doing whatever you can to get there as a Defender but the offense fortunate enough to cover it back up he'll do it himself and the defense stops him just short of the first down maybe needed a few more chain links to move the sticks man when I can run the football like that on first down and create second and inches and and stay way ahead of the sticks and and be in a position now where I can throw the football or run I will have a lot of success on the offensive side of the well they only needed one yard so no mystery there turn around hand it off and he finds a way to get it on the off they're going to go right back to him on first down well man there's some big hitting going on in the trenches right now this defense they take a lot of pride in stopping the Run let's keep our eye on them throughout the course of the game and see if they can contain this running attack we've made our way to the two-minute warning and now they'll try to at least cut a little something off of this lead before the break dropping back it's French works the middle of the field wow the quarterback knew he had to get that one to his receiver quickly on the end rout did you see the velocity on that throw he's looking to throw on Third and short he LOF one down the sideline intercepted and they capitalize not only on the pick but the great return to give the offense tremendous field position line gets set first down he's going to pass fires the pass intercepted looking for more room the 20 and it's going to be a pick six touchdown Eagles and linebackers are so athletic nowadays in college football they can play man on running backs and tight ends and all over the field and how about the linebacker making the athletic interception and then showing you he could be a running back taking it all the way back to the house for a touchdown from inside the 10 here he comes nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 and guys USC has the ball back and sending the offense onto the field the big thing now don't get rattled by that last pick six David N it it was a big mistake uh obviously the defense took advantage of it but you got to put it behind you Jesse I'm sure you know a thing or two about throwing a pick six and and how to rebound I believe I've only thrown one in my life but yes I do because of that singular instance I'll say this oh what a grab by the defense taking it the other way and he was trying to chart a course on that pick for a pick six but he'll be stopped at the 31 the offense starts with a short field looking to move it through the air they're trying to get to it a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half that is the last thing you want on first down as an offensive sack now it's second down caught over the middle it's Walton they bring him down but a solid pick up to put them in position to pick up a first down better find the earplugged here comes the noise backing this defense on third down escapes the sack trying to make magic on the scramble they finally get him on the ground but not before he rips off enough for a first down we got a timeout here late in the first half and they'll try to get more points on the board before the break corners right up on that line of scrimmage fires to the wide out and it's picked off bringing it back he's inside the 40 the 20 the 10 and he's going to run it all the way back touchdown Trojans look a lot of time left there's a little bit of distance right now being put on the scoreboard there is but it's so awesome when you're a defense and you study all week about what coming and what routes to be ready for and then you jump the route and you make the plays and you just go get in that End Zone it is so beautiful on the move from inside is five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Georgia Southern has it back and here comes the offense again now they're backed up here Jesse wonder how aggressive they're willing to be I think it's going to come down to how much confidence they have in this quarterback and his decision making because you cannot throw an interception at this part of the field with this little time left and I think that's conversations you've had with a young fell on the sidelines being like what are you comfortable with right here that we can run maybe stay aggressive but make sure I don't make that mistake Georgia Southern in [Applause] hurry looking to pass it's French throws to the wide out and here's the third interception of the night got some room to run running inside the 20 and the defender is tackled and that's how we'll run out the first [Music] [Applause] half we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connors in our halftime update man we've been looking forward to this one all week a fun start to things in LA and it' be easy to say these two offenses are glad we've hit halftime based on their respective performances it would also be accurate turnovers and sacks have told the story so far and you got to believe the play calling has been the issue right time to shred those game plans and just get back to basics and with that let's send it back to our men inside the world famous LA Coliseum and they'll bring him down to get the offense started on the next Drive okay so here comes the offense returning to the field pushes ahead for two they'll mark it at the 17 and a lot of times you want those big plays you want those Splash plays but sometimes you're going to take some losses you're not going to run the football overly well but if you continue to run it you can at least create some balance you at least have the threat of it otherwise you're just going to abandon it and now it's just going to be a passing game after the strong run on second down third third down coming do they do it again motion from the offense little over anxious out of the stance early and it's a false start false start the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty you make up the game plan and not a lot on the play sheet for this third and long from inside their own 20 back to pass it's m [Applause] and a missed opportunity on third down as the defense knocks it free and fourth down is coming up and the Trojans will call on their punt team first time today we've seen a punter go to work excellent coverage that time didn't give him any room to set up a big return a first down for the offense leaves it with the back not much room to run let's give him one to the 33 didn't get much on first down it's second and nine hand off to the single bat at the 20 he's got space and he's brought down after a nice game Georgia Southern in a hurry [Applause] he'll pull it on the re got enough space he Sprints to the end zone touchdown Georgia SN man what a luxury to be able to call a design run to your quarterback and basically let him be a tail and let him run it in for you it makes the offense and everything else around him stronger these QB is just got some good Wheels On The Run from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 this Trojan offense is ready to go back to work they still have the lead here Jesse but this would be a good time to put together a drive you're right ree you can't rest easy right now you just watch the opponent drive down the field to score a touchdown of their own so you got to answer that here your Playmakers better step up and I don't know what it is about momentum in all the locker rooms in all the years coaching everything you can't quantify you can't and it's picked off again his night vision hasn't been on par and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the pick offense getting set for first down secondary walks up on the line showing press coverage to the ground with the back nowhere to run on on that one he loses four on the carry a negative play to open the Drive let's see what they've got on second and 14 from the gun give on the inside he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and the running game has been going in the wrong direction they'll try to get their first positive play of the drive here on third down they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one Georgia Southern bring on the punt team three and out and not much choice but to get rid of the ball and they'll get him on the ground as the offense comes out to start the next drive all right guys so here's the offense back on the field again he wants to throw unloads to the wide out all kinds of room to throw that one in there and and chunk plays are the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes the stop dropping back it's Moss pocket starts to collapse and that pressure just engulfed him a sacked for this defense time winding down in the quarter as they come to the line they go to the ground the spin still in his feet there to make the tackle and with that we'll head to the fourth quarter as we head to the quarter break it is USC holding the lead they're sitting in a strong position here with the lead let's take a look at our game summary back on the field after the break and we'll start the quarter here on third down they'll try to pick up the first through the air gets the toe down but didn't go forward at all maybe this will breathe a little life into this offense which has been flatlined in the second half here's first and 10 he's looking to throw it complete they stop him almost immediately short gain there and still a little ground to cover to pick up the first now here on second down see if they keep tossing it [Applause] around he's looking to throw they're bringing heat and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the tur couldn't find his man last time and that leaves him with a third and six from the gun wants to pass can't make the connection on third down thanks to that tough hard-nosed pass defense and now it's fourth down no hesitation at all the offense stays on the field they'll go for it wide receiver shows motion on fourth down going to the air fires to the wide out makes the grab well past the sticks turns out to be an easy conversion for this offense as they move the chains on fourth [Applause] down leaves it with the running back good pick up on that play it'll bring up second and four think you have to like what you see if you're the coaching staff here your offense is on the field and it looks like you got a pretty good drive going and you're just going to try and keep this thing marching keep the clock ticking you've got a really nice lead here late just want to find ways to keep the chains moving they're doing that the receivers often will run their route based on a side adjustment back to pass it's Moss going deep this will be picked off maybe just the turning point they needed and he's brought down and this defense gets the ball back for its own they are pinned deep and this crowd is letting them have it wasting no time throwing on this drive got it in the middle it's Walton excellent job working through the air there finding a hole in that defense and picking up a first down good start to this drive and they'll need much much more if they're going to give him a finish they need a ton more of this but you got to start the drives great the first play needs to be really good that was a good start now we got to keep building on it and we got to do it in a Hur he'll come out throwing on first down getting some heat and the pressure gets to him down goes the quarterback Georgia Southern in a hurry and nice answer by this defense you give up a big play you go take a big play sometimes you get down on yourselves and one play turns to two nice job by this defense getting the sack creating some momentum and he has a solid gain on the play before sliding deals Rising as the crowd Gets behind this defense on third down from the gun wants to pass oh he's going to take a shot at the DB he's got it on the left touch down Eagles and here they come almost all the way back well how about that and after that touchdown we might have a finish after all Jesse I love it reys and this team is not quitting yeah they're down on the scoreboard right now but they are clawing and they are scratching their way back in this game they're going to keep going hard until this clock leads all zero nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 and guys USC has the ball back and sending the offense onto the field so we've got a tight spot here David that love to run out the clock but all those timeouts staring at them Lofts one high and deep makes the grab on the right and they'll do more than move the chains they'll move that thing more than 30 yds down the field before he's finally stopped just inside the 30 at the 29 it's first and [Applause] 10 he's going to pass blasted as he lets it go he's got his man across the middle defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense picked up some yardage with that completion now second down they'll try to keep this clock moving on the ground and they'll bring him down but not before he picks up the first down timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible finally some signs of life from this offense which has done nothing in the second half it's first and 10 Let's It Go to The End Zone can't make the grab as he was looking for his man right at the goal line you simply don't see that very often a quarterback at this guy's caliber missing a guy wide open in the end zone he makes those throws in his [Applause] sleep going to work in the Red Zone they can't pick up the first down without getting it into the end [Applause] zone it's a draw and a good solid pick up before the defense Cuts him down quick timeout call by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense High quarters deep in the Red Zone but they can pick up a first down without scoring third [Applause] down quarterback making adjustments with his receivers scanning the field it's moss and this one will be stopped for no gain so on fourth down here comes the field goal kicker in a huge spot on field QBs do a really good job of feeling pressure and trying to get away from and you can see he wants to but there's nowhere to go great job by the defense getting him to the ground for no game you know it's funny in an age where there's so many college football analytics and everybody wants to go for it on fourth down at the end of the day it still comes down to managing good decision by the head coach here in the fourth quarter by kicking that field goal you've now made it a two- possession game your chances of winning this thing have now gone way and the quarterback caught up two and sacked at the 12 trying to get everybody set with the clock still [Applause] running on second down looking to throw find face on the right he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down new set of downs after that completion to the air on first down and the quarterback is snowed under they'll try to kick it into overdrive clock's running second down coming he's looking to throw trying to get to him trying to make magic with his feet and the defense drags him down they're at their fastest Tempo trying to get off this third down play looking to throw and he needs a bunch for the fourth time tonight it's an interception just broke the tackle and still on his feet and they capitalized not only on the pick but on the great return to improve this field position that should be the nail in the cin what a great break on the football getting the big turnover you got the lead now just go out there be smart on offense and run that clock they'll crank up this drive with the pass he's got it touchdown Southern cow and what he got loose it was all over I got to say the mental toughness that this team is showing early this season is real impressive and going down the field and scoring on that last possession putting themselves in position here to go two and0 they're answering the Bell this team has leadership on both sides of the ball very very impressive he'll bring it back from inside to spot nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Georgia Southern has it back ready to go to work on offense to the air it's French pressure coming and that defense gets to him and down he goes at the nine they've got him PN deep in their own end In This Crowd trying to help keep them there time out called by the defense 13 seconds to go negative play on first down that's what a defense always wants just had to get rid of that one good job to fight another play here Comes This Home crowd as the defense tries to get off the field on third down he's looking downfield to throw didn't have anything working and just had to throw it away on third down and now such a tough situation late in this game you're trailing but now it's Fourth and long like it's one thing if it's Fourth and short this makes it even more difficult you got to have lost one deep down the right side and his fifth interception of the game a miracle they have imp pulled him yet and he's going to go down as time has run [Applause] out they won the game today that's two in a row if they win the next one it's called a winning streak it's been done before and we're seeing the identity of this team coming to fruition just get the sense they're finding out who they are what they're about what they're going to do schematically and who their big Playmakers are which is tough to do right it's tough to grow throughout a season and understand who you are but when you stack wins week after week on top of each other and start to have success you start to grow as an identity and you start to understand who you are
