“An UTTER Scandal” | Keir Starmer Warns About More ‘Pain’ Ahead

gentlemen um let's let's start oh hold on Ryan's very excited don't go anywh we've got a we've got a voice note first one of the day for Uncle Ryan uh Peter go just wondering about uh starmer's attack on the pensioners and their winter fuel payment probably expecting a number of those at the next election not to still be alive well I wonder how many of those are going to spike the hell out of him and make sure they are alive in the next four stroke five years so they can vote him out great show keep it up let's start with that Mike Buckley um let's not talk about what was left a 22 billion pound black hole allegedly cuz he spent another 11 million on giving unions pay Rises can you explain to people listening many of whom are pensioners to be honest who are very concerned I just read a an email for a woman who said usand has cancer that winter fuel payment paid for logs they won't have it this winter um does the government understand the Optics of screwing pensioners who have paid their stamp for years it's not about being mean to pension is all about being mean to anybody it's simply about the fact that as you just mentioned there's a lot of money been left uh just spent by the previous government there's a black hole there's spending that needs to happen across the so across Society across the economy across government there isn't enough coming in the government needs to fix that it needs to make choices to make that happen the winter fuel payment did go to all pensioners most of that money of course when people who just frankly didn't need it uh and will be absolutely fine be able to put the heating on without the poorest pensioners those who are on benefits can of course they would they don't need to apply they will just get it automatically um so I don't know where all your questions have come from because they'll just get it because they get it same as they always did and that's why they've drew the line where they did so they don't have to do means testing they don't have to have people fill in application forms because they already know who these people are so they can just give them the payment there is of course and as we've discovered in the last few days and I thought this would happen when the policy announced would to be honest there is of course a coort of people who are just above that benefit threshold or indeed some way above it who will be in very very difficult circumstances that's been made worse by the fact that the price cap has now gone up and indeed I think there was another payment that pension has got because of the cost of living crisis under the previous government that was there in previous days that is is the is that isn't there anymore so it's not just this the winter fuel payment they've lost they've lost his other payment as well I I mean currently the government is saying they're not going to do anything to change the policy that they've announced I do Wonder uh if by the time we get to the winter there will be some measures put in place to ensure that people who are in a different baned uh do do get the payment I mean my other thought on all of this if there's about as everybody keeps saying there's about 900,000 people who are eligible to be on the benefits that would trigger the winter fuel payment that haven't applied for it and they need to apply I do wonder whether that could just be done automatically I mean if it is not it's interesting to hear but I have to say um there are over 11 million pensioners in uh in England and we are getting Reams Mike of people saying it is a 243 Quest 22 page 243 p and what I like if I can bring Matt in what I do like what Mike admitted to is I'm not talking about the people on benefits and I'm absolutely with you that there are many pensioners who shouldn't be getting it okay but there is a large s in the middle who have never had a benefit who have paid their bleeding stamp who have never broken the law and whether we like this or not they are going to go right so I've done my bit all my life and I'm being screwed at a moment when I need help that's that's a reality is it not Matthew yeah and the whole thing with this is no one promised this no one put this up to an election and the labor party were actually trying to stitch up the conservatives before asking if the conservatives we're going to scrap the winter fuel allowance you're completely right there are pensioners who don't need this and there are many many pensioners who are going to get it automatically but there's a huge sway who as we've already heard can't be bothered to fill out a 20page 243 questionnaire it's ridiculous and this winter is going to be bad services are already stretched over winter so this isn't going to save money for the government it's going to cause KnockOn effects in the n h s in Social care and elsewhere in our country this is a bad decision they made the decision they have to face up to the consequences Mike I don't want you to come on here and think that everybody's battering there's lots to talk about but can I just bring in something from two days ago which I I I'm completely Gob smacked I remember talking to you incessantly about the Optics of some appalling decisions the Optics of looking like you're a man of the people I thought Kia starm and opposition did a fantastic job I've got feelings about the first eight weeks none of this by the way supports anything the Tory party did in its entirety mate you should know that but to stand in that Rose Garden in a suit and a pair of glasses provided by a donor who was given a free pass that he only gave back on Saturday night when the Sunday Times outed him Lord Ali I just want to ask you as a labor supporter what the hell do you think pensioners thought of that you were forever telling me about the Tores and how much money the prime minister of this country who own 400 ,000 as Chief prosecutor who lives in a London townhouse are you telling me that he's a man of the people and he can't buy his own suits I thought that was one of the most shocking things strangely the first eight weeks surely you agree with me on that no I'm actually genuinely surprised to hear you say that I mean I can't I don't really mind who by K stas clothes to be really to be really honest I mean there were lots of political donations that happen uh to all political parties I do think it's something that probably could and should be cleaned up so that we we as the public have a clearer understanding of where the money is coming from and to who mid is going obviously people have to declare donations in Parliament but most of us can't see that information or we could if we went on you know the right Government website but he's got but what I'm saying is how do you think pensioners feel that a knight of the realm and Her Majesty's prime minister is taking suits and glasses from a man who's given a past to Downey Street I think that's an appalling look I mean my Hest response to that is I think is a bit of a sid show if somebody said to me look I think you can look better in a new in a new suit and some decent glasses then that's going to help you present yourself to the country I think that's that's just how politics Works Matt if it Matt if it is a sideshow it it was out there and that doesn't make him and all we heard about was hypocrisy and cronyism and jobs for the boys it's exactly the BL the same compare somebody buying k s suit with everything that was going on to Boris Johnson for example I mean I am not I am not defending Boris Johnson Mike but that is 20,000 and you can't go on about what they did it's now on you starma and that is surely Matthew an awful look that is exactly the point the hypocrisy if it were a Tory this would be everywhere they'd be calling for resignations be calling for inquiries be calling for this and the other I am sorry but the Optics were wrong it's been an utter Scandal and an utter SAS and it just shows you cannot trust a thing that this labor government is going to say because they said so little during the election campaign now they've got an incredibly wide majority which is incredibly thin they can do what they want and we are going to be in for five years of chaos Michael we're not going to be in for five years of chaos and I I don't already have there is no hint of corruption at all they've been perfectly upfront about the who bought his suit and who bought his glasses there's no nobody's broken the law nobody's nobody has broken any parliamentary R Rees has been reported perfectly above board um you know it's fine I mean there have been political appointments uh but the one that went into the treasury he decided himself that he was going to make himself a volunteer rather than a paid employee which was the right thing to do by the way so I'm glad that that happened every government makes mistakes that probably was a mistake but it's been rectified and that's a good thing I think we all need to give new governments of any of any shape or form you know time to to to bed themselves in and this government to a degree is still beding itself in which is why they've still got a lot of big decisions to make but they're very upfront about that but I don't I don't think there's a sense of peronism or corruption or rule break rule breaking as there was for much of not quite all the last 14 years but certainly a good trunk of the last 14 but the thing is in my opinion I'm going to go to a break you're not go I get it Mike I understand it's been eight weeks I understand governments make mistakes but if you we said the other day you win elections in this country by telling a disenfranchised disillusion bunch of people this is what's wrong with your life and this is who's to blame for it you don't tell them how you're going to make it better now I believe the incompetence of the Tory party underlined 15 times allowed this to happen because I didn't hear anybody in the Tory party during that election campaign saying how do you think this is all going to be paid for I'm not decrying that they will make mistakes but you know what I said it to you before Mike the view from the cheap suits is easy the view from the cheap seats opposition is always easy and now the finger is pointed at him and so this criticism will happen I'm going to go to a break just very quickly a couple of things if you are concerned by the way listening about that winter fuel allance you want to know more we've got a a feedback system email feedback at talk. TV feedback at .tv we'll give you more information about how maybe you can get that form and any help that you want with it which I think is a great great thing and men get your thinking hats on coming back e
