[Applause] is J the Rocky Mountains provide the backdrop in Boulder Colorado and if you're looking for the buffalos they ain't hard to find and boy do we have a fun one ahead top 10 team Target on their back going on their Road and right into the snake pit as we'll see the number eight team in the country the West Virginia Mountaineers taking on the 22nd ranked team in the land the Colorado Buffalo for EA Sports college football I'm Rees Davis joined here in the booth as always by David Pollock and Jesse Palmer guys let's tee this one up [Music] and the Buffalo will kick it away first fielded In The End Zone it's farmer pull down at the 18 and the decision to bring it out of the end zone was not a good one so West Virginia's offense will get the first swing of the game and there's a man who believes he is always open he carries that swag in that aura of a big time playmaker guys he's got to catch the football if you're the quarterback coming into this one you are looking for this guy early and David you're looking for him often and this offense better find ways to feature him find him like you said Jesse early often deep shallow get this man the football they think they can create space here with the run to the right he's Dro behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three and that play shows you really what this defense is about it's a difficult one to attack they're really good one of the best in the country they come at you from all angles so I I'm interested to watch how do you mix up the play calling how do you keep the defense off balance cuz they are a good one here's the handoff and he goes out of bounds after coming up with positive yardage there looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out third and six and they'll need a big play here on this opening drive looking for a man it's Krell unloads to the Wi out oh they really could have used that catch their physical pass defense it brings up a fourth down this is a point where you just got to be able to focus the critical down and distances in this game like that third down right there when it's a good throw you got to make the catch you got to be able to make that play fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way and this punt will be down just inside the 30 yd lines so the Colorado Buffalo offense has its first opportunity of the day and they seem to believe that they can take big plays away and man coverage by just locking him up in this matchup David yeah and it's hard to lock down a great wide receiver but a great defensive back versus a great wide receiver we got a showdown yeah let's be honest David most defenses don't have a dude like that at cornerback that could do that in a game like this but this matchup is unique and it's going to really determine the outcome of the game nice pitch and catch there and they'll have enough for the first down [Applause] he's looking to throw it and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second down coming love seeing these early season top 25 matchups you can get a really good feel of how good these teams are guys and the intensity is going to be big too David because the players you know on these teams they've been thinking about this game for a long time they knew they'd have a national stage and they got a chance to prove just how good they are oh man make that statement make that early State we always look at the end of the season and and what does the committee say oh they beat top 25 so and so here's your chance to put that on your resume that'll pay off big timeing late in the season he'll do it himself and they needed an inch and they didn't get it this defense gives up nothing and you'll like it the buffalos will bring the punt team onto the field he ought to be able to use this first punt to pin him deep and the punt hits ground in the two and goes into the end zone he just missed pinning them right in the shadow of the goal post it'll come out to the 20 first down here for the offense hands it off a knock him down after a gain of three to the 23 the deeper into the season we get the more they win the greater their confidence that they can finish strong here in the Big 12 heck yeah Reese the bigger the expectations get the bigger the consequences get for every single game so you know this league is tough you know there's always a lot of points scored you know there's playoff implications possibly down the road so this team's got to continue to stay on course and continue to do what they've been doing no doubt about it all their goals still out ahead of them right now and play the thing they've been really good at doing outside of just being a talented football team and showing up is that they've got their head where it needs to be every single week doesn't matter who they're playing they're playing at an extremely high level just taking it one game at a time they got to do it again today the Mountaineers will line it up on First and 10 back to pass it's K trell safe completion on the screen they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some range for their running back and the Mountaineers look to keep this drive humming the give to the running back from the shotgun you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six it's just so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down after the productive first down play it's second and six it'll be a draw and he's swallowed up at the line of scrimmage by the big defensive tackle they've got the ball Midfield but they're facing a third and long from the gun wants to pass and that's incomplete a Defender all over and knock the ball to the ground fourth down coming up this is an area of the field where it's really advantageous to just go for it on fourth down they'll throw for it complete out of the back field looking for the sticks he's not going to get there stopped short on fourth down and the Colorado offense is coming back onto the field looking for a productive play on first down he wants to throw grabbed behind the line it's bustle and a good job in coverage there as they stop it after just a few and the buffalos want to pick up the tempo takes a hand off it's p smashes through they finally make the stop at the big run is plenty to move those sticks for the first down all right well look I know the defense was feeling good about their Runde coming into this one and how they've been playing up to this point but finally David the offense breaks through and they finally generate something positive on the ground and I can't tell you how easy it is when you're going to throw the ball consistently and I know it I'm going to pin my ears back and I'm going to get to the quarterback it makes life really easy on a defensive line but when you can have balance now the defense doesn't know what's coming they need more of this if they're going to be successful on offense wants to throw on second down oh walked up field too soon and dropped the football and it'll be thir looked like the offense had a chance for a big play there but the running back just could not reel that ball in they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one on Third and long hoping to throw beyond the sticks always a welcome play for the defense as they get a sack at the 47 third and long situation we're bringing an extra DB on the field and we're telling our front guys to pin your ears back and go get the QB and they get the job done fourth down punt team sends it the other way and the punt hits ground in the two and goes into the end zone he just missed pinning them right in the shadow of the goal post it'll come out to the 20 here's this offense with a fresh set of downs the give to the back crosses the 30 got away this is an offense that really sees their identity as being able to run the football nice job there picking up the first down it's been a defensive battle through the first period and the stats tell that Tale sh they'll break the seal on this quarter here on first down power football with the run and they'll shove him out of bounds after the short gain and those physical runs take a toll it might not be a big game now but down the road third fourth quarter late in the ball games they tend to turn into bigger runs got three on first down it's second and seven the receivers often will run their route based on a side adjustment to the air it's Krell and the pressure gets to him down goes the quarterback this quarterback has to know he's got to get rid of the football this defense has already shown on film that they'll Rush this outside linebacker off the edge and make the count five on their pass rush but with his speed his flexibility he's too much for a lot of these offensive linemen to handle on Third and long you'll have to turn it loose deep and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down the Mountaineers will try to pin them back with the punt that's why it's so important for this defense to win first and second down you set up third and Longs like that you can show your exotic looks you can get the pass rush going everybody in the back end expecting throw that's how you force incompletions to force for Colorado has the ball back and the Buffalo hoping to put their team in Prime position on offense they just didn't quite find the Rhythm on that last Drive Jesse they had to punt it I think they got to be more physical David I think up front they got to do a better job getting blocks and establishing this running game and how easy does football become if you're a more physical if you can threaten the run and then then run play action it opens up the whole offense at your disposed right back to it they've got it to the 49 yd line and they'll move the chain we got to have short are quickness that running back there doing what it takes to make sure he got that first down it'll be a first down from the 49 yd line from the gun the ground game really nice stop there from this the senior leader and the buffalo's headed quickly to the [Applause] line looking to pass on second down quarterback just flat missed it incomplete this guy is very proud about his accuracy that's why he's one of the better quarterbacks in Olive College football and that time ball just got away from him a little bit it's going to set up their down they'll try to move the chains on this third and long from the 50 he's looking to throw just threw that one away to avoid disaster and this is why you don't want to get in these situations third and long defense knows its pass they're playing pass playing deep QB has nowhere to go with the football so he just throws it away a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work West Virginia has it in the offense ready to go to work David the punter got some work last time they'd like to keep him on the sidelines in this drive yeah it's not something you want to say very often you don't want the punter out there this offense needs to get back lathered up and get a little bit more of a rhythm best way to do that identify where your best players are and just get them the football give these guys some touches to Kickstart this offense they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and how about the timing of the linebacker on the blitz to get in the back Back Field and get the tackle for loss is there anything better for a linebacker than to run on a blitz and nobody's home except the back such a great feeling when when the Moses Parts the Red Sea and the hole opens up and you go fill it they're setting up the screen still running at the 40 and there was lots of space as he gets it to the 39 yd line and what a play call you could feel maybe a little bit of aggressiveness this def mind flying up field what do you do throw a screen right behind it get it to your running back let him do the rest chew up some yardage and make the big play for the offense fighting off the defender man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out didn't get much on first down it's second and nine from the shotgun they'll run it nice move to keep running he got a bunch and look close to getting a lot more but he's got the first down offensive coordinators just spend all offseason in a lab and they just draw up stuff over and over again how many times can I use misdirection how many times can I use speed against the linebackers who flow so fast to the football really nice play design a little misdirection the defense didn't know what hit him big game for the offense right on target with that last pass now it's second and medium quarterback checking off back to pass it's Krell fires into traffic it's picked off taking it the other way the 40 he's out of bounds showing off the hands on the pick and then the Nifty moves on a terrific return what an interception he's dangerous because not only can he catch the ball and pluck it out of the air but he's hard to bring down too this is a guy that I think could play offense for a lot of programs around the country and he showed you his open field running there going down field for the big play and they won't make the connection looking to make a big play there you know if you're going to complete these dagger throws you've got to have great anticipation as a quarterback you almost got to it before the receiver comes out of the break you need better timing on that after the quarterback and receiver failed to hook up they'll try it again on second down he's looking to throw fires to the wide out this senior quarterback a little too bold there and he's lucky he didn't get picked off throwing into double coverage now facing a third and long off play action coming after it and the heat gets home they knock him down back at the 45 timeout call by the defense it's their first of the half as they'll make some adjustments the buffalos will line up to punt it away doesn't say much for your drive when you're looking forward to the punt punt goes out of bounds and a really nice job as they stick them deep in their own and they'll mark it around the 10 West Virginia has it back ready to dive into Playbook that last Drive was promising for a while but you just can't mess it up at the end with the pick Jesse no you've got to be able to finish drives especially in this game if you're going to win in David they've got to be able to eliminate the mental mistakes yeah and I don't think you get conserve it or play it safe you can trust your guy I think you put the ball right back in his hands and let him do his thing after getting knocked back to open this drive it's second and 12 looking to throw it's Krell makes the grab down the middle excellent job working through the air there finding a hole in that defense and picking up a first down new set of downs after that completion quarterback will audible going up top on first down quick strike complete and and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pickup we know this defense loves to play a lot of Zone coverage so you're seeing this offense now attacking that they're letting the receivers find the soft spots in the zones so they can advance the football this first half of offense won't go on the Highlight Reel so far but starting to get things moving it's first and oh what a grab by the defense and the senior just snatched the ball out of the air and gave it back to his offense this is obviously not great start for this quarterback here two interceptions already in this game he's got to do a much better job with his decision and the Colorado offense is coming back onto the field based on this field position Jesse they need to get something on the board before the half and they got to be aggressive two re they've got the weapons to attack and try to steal a field goal you practice these situations all during the week you know you got to be fast taking advantage of the clock it's stopping making sure you're throwing the football down the field to try to get some point this one's complete the offense will have to use its first timeout of the half well you can tell those two have been practicing the out route all off season long they look like they could have completed that in their sleep wants to throw on third oh they really could have used that catch their physical pass defense it brings up a fourth down third and short in college football today you see so much more pass than you used to the off defense stays aggressive and I think they stay aggressive because they know they're in field goal range they got that three in their back po they stop him short of the marker and they'll turn it over on down I like it this defense plays aggressive on Fourth and short and they are rewarded figured they would run the football they did nice job getting some penetration and stopping that fourth down play Here Comes the offense on first down quarterback reacting to what the D is showing they're going to open this drive with a pass catch in the middle it's Gallagher found a bunch of room and got it to the 44 yd line the offense calls timeout it's the second one they've used this half just a few seconds remaining here as they try to put something up before halftime back to throw it's Krell unleashing is one deep he can't find his man and the clock stopped with 6 seconds left well I like this quarterback being aggressive and taking a shot there's a better play there by the defense right back up top on second and 10 finds a tight end down the gut quick timeout called by the offense after the play waning seconds of the first half and they'll try to tack on a three before they head to the locker room what a disappointment no good kicker tried to tack a few more on the scoreboard guys couldn't do it at the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin in our halftime update fellas yman work so far today in Boulder and welcome in to the halime update and a really competitive game so far I'm talking razor thin margins in the big statistical categories and while it may be a broken record turnovers are the name of the game the team that limits them the ones that win that turnover margin generally speaking are the ones that have the best chance to get that done and the Mountaineers will kick it away to start the second half here he comes from inside his own five nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 Colorado has the ball back and the Buffalo hoping to put their team in Prime position on offense there's certainly room for improvement after that scoreless first half stale make yeah we've set offense back 30 years and that oh all kinds of Running Room at the 30 inside the 10 touchdown Buffalo and that one will put him up here in the second half and finally somebody gets on the scoreboard a first half of no points Z to zero now in the third quarter sometimes when you get that Rhythm and that offense rolling sometimes it's hard to stop so let's see if this is a trend set let's see if this starts the offensive momentum we check in with Kevin con what's going on Kevin Hey guys let's take a look at what's happening in a great top 25 matchup Washington has opened up a can right now and based on what we've seen I'm not sure anything is going to change they're up by 18 over Oregon he'll Circle back if anything big happens you should know about oh and how about that I know Kevin and those guys will be keeping an eye on it for us he'll try the left side runs through the tackle he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three well he did everything he could to try to avoid all those Defenders but at the end it's still a negative play tackle for loss one Defender then the next one the blitzing guy got a shot at him everybody had a shot it took a while to get him down yeah great effort by that def he lets one fly deep and the incomplete pass taking a shot on second down and they'll be left with a third down if they he can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long no secret what he needs here brings it down on the right side ripped off a huge chunk play on that one as he gets the first down before he steps out of bounds it's a beautiful pass and catch I love the job the quarterback does manipulating the defense with his eyes he Froze that safety and that a shot toward the end zone and it was going for a chunk play but the long pass is incomplete couldn't make the connection on first down now here on second quarterback changing the plays at the line they're going to throw it again he's not afraid to go deep and it's in complete going for the massive explosive play instead they're looking at a third down and that was good defense again and unfortunately we've been saying that all game long really really good defense or listen you can spit on the other side this offense has really been bad third and long and he'll try to throw for it complete downfield he goes to the ground but not before a big pick up and a first down the Mountaineers want to move quickly they're in the red zone and they'll pass it got his man quickly and he'll step out of bounds after a very productive play I want to get my running backs the ball in space as much as possible and sometimes it doesn't work in the running game but I can throw it to him I can try to create some space out wide dump him the football let him make some catches and see if I can't get some big plays out of the lone backs got it got enough space gets it into the end zone but wait a minute we'll have to check out the laundry on the field holding penalties the ultimate Drive killer we'll see if it cost this offense here now on second down the give to the tail back and he runs it in for the score touchdown Mountaineers and this is now we'll hang on here the coach has called a timeout he wants the officials to take another look thinks he's got a good shot at getting this one overturn might have to give that coach a flag and a whistle he was right on in his view of the way the officials agree and overturn the call and the Mountaineers will try to put one on the board on first and goal they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one I think coming into this season they thought in order to have success we have got to be able to run the ball and get this guy going he hasn't scored yet this year but a golden opportunity right now to finally break the seed looking for a path to the end zone to the right he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a l of three listen the defense won that play as an offense here the key David you can't go backto back negative plays you got to be smart with the football here looks like you're going to have to throw it you just can't force it you got to make sure you're he Sprints to the end zone touchdown MERS I tell you when this drive started the defense thought they had them in a hole not anymore what a performance and I really like the play calling by the offensive coordinator on that last drive that was a nice mixture of running and throwing and getting different players involved really nice job very poised in that play calling and it showed up with a touchdown and The Return Man has no place to run no place to hide and a place to be tackled and the Colorado offense is coming back onto the field and in a lowc scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just gets frustrating and you got to put that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful caller now use it against them yeah David I think for a play caller this is tough right it's like you have to have the perfect play on just to get a first down and these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play and it breaks this trend and the Buffalo is moving quickly to the line and David how demoralizing does it have to be for a defense when you know they're going to run it everyone in the stadium knows they're going to run it and still you cannot stop it there's nothing more demoralizing as defensive line because it just it ticks you off it gets in your head you know that guy's going to come off and smack you and you got to do something about it I think the defense maybe time to start committing more guys to stopping that run not worrying about the pass as much2 he'll throw on third down throws to the wide out he makes a catch and he was Off to the Races finally tripped up at the 36 and the Buffalo are flying down the field was to throw on first down well I think on that play you saw why this guy's such a big weapon in this offense that receiver he does such a nice job with his routes he's patient and he's consistent and he's got good hands you don't see him put a lot of balls on the ground nice job there picking up the first down out of the gun they give to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one this is the type of play that decides games are you tough enough to convert third and short from the 30 from the gun wants to pass pressure coming didn't have much of a choice just had to throw that one away it'll be fourth down he'll have to settle for a field goal attempt he's going to have to get into this one a little bit from 47 yds away he's got it showing off that big leg from 47 yds out so after the last Drive ended with a field goal the kickoff team out there to send it away on the move from inside is five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 West Virginia has it in the offense ready to go to work the sledding has been tough scores have been at a premium Jesse in every possession seems like it could switch the momentum of the game yeah Reese for this offense just feels like they just haven't been as physical and for this offensive coordinator David he's having to go deep into the Playbook just to try to generate a first down well and the good thing is there's not a ton of game pressure cuz the other side's not scoring either but if you can find that one thing that get that one positive play and then maybe you get those juices going and something can start to build out of the shotgun they go to the ground stuffed almost in his tracks but strong enough to pick up one to the 35 guys Colorado has the lead here they've done the work to build a nice cushion now to bring it home as we check out the stats after three quarters will start the quarter offense about to snap it on second down trying to impose their will with the run at the 45 on it way he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense you know they Pride themselves on being physical at the point of attack dominated at the line of scrimmage nice job there picking up the first down to throw it's Kell looking for the end zone and it was worth the gamble but the long pass is incomplete another incompletion and I've said that a lot and these teams are just struggling I mean the offense just doesn't know game it's kind of been a rock fight on both sides on second down he'll let it fly looking down the middle makes a connection and this defense his head is spinning he gets it down to the 27 that wide receiver on the outside's dangerous when you're playing Zone coverage it's really hard because you're not chasing him you can't really get hands on him you got to make sure you send more guys his Direction maybe slide those linebackers toward that wide receiver so you got a little more help on the outside they'll throw it on first first down deep shot for the end zone and they won't make the connection going for the big play you know it's a good decision by the QB because his intended target wasn't open so throw it out of bounds and you can live to play another day here on this drive they'll line up for a second down play easy after the incompletion they go back up top using the back as a receiver on the screen they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some lanes for their running back hey man sometimes you get the perfect play call at the perfect time that time the defense blitzing offensive line allowed everybody to run up field and they slip in the running back screen and behind it there was nobody there to make a tackle and this offense generates a massive Play It's draw are you going fuing up front executing those blocks there's too many one on where they got beat and as a result they suffer a negative play they'll throw it to the back on the screen not a whole lot of room there on that screen pass it just never develop I tell you what if you want to be overzealous you want to be a Blitzer all the time I like running screen right behind him did a great job throwing the screen almost broke this one for a long game but it just keeps the defense a little bit more honest the is the flag now bro out of so theen will not be enforced he has stands on the result of the play and here we go down to score they'll go for it on fourth [Applause] down he'll try to throw and pick up the first down touchdown West Virginia they move on top here in the fourth man I love this offense being able to run the football late in the game when it matters and punching in for the touchdown and more importantly Take the Lead let's go to the studio now and check in with Kevin Connor Kevin what do you got all right guys want to update you on a game that went final moments ago Memphis went into hostile territory and came away with a convincing Victory the Tigers always seem to get everyone's best punch but today they were the ones who delivered The Knockout it's one game you don't want to react too much either way but I think both teams will leave this one with some things to work on moving forward and Kevin Conor is keeping an eye on everything all over the country sounds like they had a good one there they'll come out on this drive and let it rip and that pass picked off going the other way and he's got room and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the pick and that just kind of caps off this day it's been a day with not a lot of Rhythm not a lot of timing not a lot of guys on the same page and they weren't right there and the quarterback throws an INT and this one is not looking good moving the running back forcing the defense to adjust got some room enter to the goal line and he'll step into the end zone touchdown Mountaineers that'll give them a little more breathing room as they try to push this winning streak to five and the extra point is up and good and they have an 11-point fourth quarter lead anytime you've got a successful Run play on the ground you've got to have great blocking up front the offensive line receivers everybody doing their job and that helped lead to the Home Run and the returner runs out of real estate as he goes down Colorado has the ball back and the Buffalo hoping to put their team in Prime position on offense well let's see if this drive goes better than in the last one they were in and out quickly after the quick pick David yeah first play big mistake man now let's get this offense in a little bit of a rhythm maybe before you open it up again Palmer or do you trust him right away uh he seems to me like the guy maybe that just needs to kind of get into the flow of the game so maybe you get the running game going here just give him some easy looks to let him get lathered up he's looking for a man on second down he tosses one high and deep down the left side and a coverage and they made him pay it's intercepted and the offense makes the tackle in frustration after the interception Drive comes up empty and it's a turnover look at it this way the field position is awful but opportunity to pile up a lot of stats because there are a lot of yards in front of them a solid run there as he'll be marked down at the 15 yd line got eight on first down now looking at a second and two we reached a two-minute warning and this offense will be quite content just to drain the rest of the time away the hand off keep working on that clock he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three time out called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible to the air it's K trell and he got smacked just as he released the pass it's incomplete the m will send out the punt unit from Midfield looking for room he's brought down but a really solid effort to pick up every bit of yardage he could on the P return and the Colorado offense is coming back onto the field after throwing the pick on the last drive need to take care of the ball this time Jesse we're going to find out a lot about this quarterback right here too how does he fight through adversity after that last Drive yeah clear the me a move on that's a part of it right if you're going to be a great player you got to learn how to handle these mistakes and move on hey you know the defense here in this situation with the huge lead they've got to anticipate that this offense is going to be trying to throw their work different coverages to try to force the quarterback to go over the middle of the field with the football and he'll make his way out of bounds after the solid pick up well this offense has a ton of work left ahead of them here in this two-minute situation late in the game but the drive off to a good start get the first down get out of bounds work in the perimeter of the field that is exactly what you want to do setting up the screen he's all the way down to the two yd line just spectacular execution there clock is still running and they have to get everybody lined up he wants to pass it on second down and it's hard for the late touchdown so how about this maybe we are set up for a and that's step one great job by this off getting in the end zone now you got to go get the stop you got to get the football back you got to find a way to do something to create a turnover get an onside to get the football back to get back in this football game wide receiver coming across in motion looking to throw and the quarterback goes down but there is a penalty flag down and I think the offense is going to pick up the first first down the defense was offs side they got one of the touchdowns they needed and they'll try to get the ball back right now with the onside kick cool as a cucumber as the hands team makes a sure catch nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook so that defense keeps the lead right where it is and a chance to to build on it David yeah the defense did a great job now the offense you know what you're going to get from this defense they have to be aggressive they're trying to get the football back later in the game Jesse because they're going to be so aggressive too David you know on offense now you have a chance to break one maybe in the Run game we're finding a one-on-one match up in the passing game to really pad the lead after getting knocked back to open this drive it's second and 12 hand off from the shot and he was able to run through one tackle but still only a modest game defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense a third and long coming up here making adjustments with his receivers on Third and long trying to have a big completion here hits him inside the 20 still going touchdown Mountaineers made the snag and strolled his way into the end zone they build this fourth quarter lead and they are just minutes away from going 5 and0 and you know late in the games offenses sometimes get conservative when they got the lead and they got
