welcome to kenck Stadium in Iowa City a black in Gold M pit where the Hawkeyes are ready to swarm little gets the blood boiling quite like a rivalry game barbs shots trash talk things that go on throughout the week will now all be settled on this field taking on a team from the Big 10 the Iowa hawkey glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to tee it up the Cyclones will get us started with the opening kickoff looking for daylight from inside is 20 guys just enough space to cross the 25 let's mark it at the 27 yd line so the Iowa Hawkeyes offense takes the field to start this game off while these two might have struggled to stay prominent on the national stage the siw trophy always carries Paramount importance and it means so much to the fans B of these games a lot of times the energy is through the roof and they both want to destroy each other and what's interesting about this rivalry game is it sets the tone for both programs they generally play early in the year and for the winner it can really catapult you the losers got to pick up the pieces I like this guy as a running back because he can run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all halfway there on first down it's second and [Applause] five they run the reverse hard running there he'll be stopped at the 41 but give him 10 on that play [Music] the offense lines up at the 41 with a first and 10 out of the gun they give to the back and I think they'll give him two on that one second and eight coming up last time these two met Iowa did Iowa things and won a close one man they they do that so often in this series they just find a way even if they're trailing to win the ball game and Iowa State's got to figure that puzzle out Iowa doing Iowa things defensively they made the plays they needed to make in that game and they're going to have to do that again in this one oh dropped it and what a missed opportunity early in this football game this rivalry is so important to the people of this state and it dates back to 1894 guys yeah it goes back a long way when you watch the product on the field every year it's usually low scoring but it's a lot of physical tough people on the field yeah and you know people in Iowa they just love football and this is a rivalry game that really hit the express way is wide open the ultimate grab and go for the score they can use this first score to sort of set the tone guys in this rivalry matchup man doesn't this feel good to come out score early get the crowd involved get the nerves out of the way Palmer when you're playing in a big rivalry game yeah and I feel like momentum is always a big in any game but in rivalry games it's that much more important because everybody is going to feed off that first score now they'll try to add another to their [Applause] lead and he's got the extra point and it's 7 nothing to start this one a very efficient five play scoring drive and they they finish it in style with a 57 yd toss for six about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown here he comes from inside his own five he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 so Iowa State's offense has its first opportunity of the day and the spotlight in this game will will undoubtedly be on these star wide receivers David I mean they're featured Reese like these guys are going to touch the football a lot these offenses are built to get them the football to make plays we're in for a few catches today Paul you sure are when you can get open like these guys can when you have the speed to take the top off of a defense you know you're going to see a lot of explosive plays today really nice job to squirt his way up to the 31 yd line well it's plays like that that'll help this offense stay in Rhythm all game long if you can have that kind of success on first down running the football it just opens up your entire Playbook moving forward this crowd full throat splitting the eard drums and letting them know it's going to be a long day give to the running back he'll move it up to the 37 yd line and it'll be a first down and that's all you want right you want that first down understand the situation understand I got to get North and South sou get a first down get a new set of downs they've got it at the 37 it's first and 10 used the play fake now to throw fires to the tight end he's there to make the stop but the damage has been done as they pick up the first down on the throw and catch ever since they invented the forward pass the tight ends have been running the drag and getting the first down I I think it's because the tight ends so much versatility you know they can block and stay in the formation or they can release and come out but either way if the quarterback's patient most of the time that drag route's going to come over not much working there it'll be second and nine yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the tempo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge didn't get much on first down second and nine looking to throw it's Beck setting up the screen still running at the 40 finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down one of the things I love about this offense is they're very versatile in their passing attack they throw to receivers and tight ends and the screen game is big as well this guy is a weapon you're seeing that here early and the Cyclones have it with a first and 10 the inside hand off he is going nowhere stop but all that matters is keeping him off the scoreboard yeah it's that Ben don't break mentality you're seeing right now and this is the point where this defense has just got to lock in on second down looking to throw got it set up on the outside he's right out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down well they pick up the first down there on the screen I love the offensive line there allowing the pass rush to get way up the field they completely baited their guys made them think that they got beaten that they were going to get the sack and then they sneak the running back scen right in behind them and pick up the first fires to the tight end he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down a nice job by the defense there tackling the catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do they'll go to the ground tackle is made but not until he gets the first down we' reached the end of one and as is tradition here in Iowa City we take a moment to say hi to the children of the University of Iowa stad family Children's Hospital hello [Music] kids always a treat to be here at Iowa and take part in a special moment hope these kids enjoy the rest of the game as we play on into the second quarter back at it to open the quarter with this first down [Applause] play they'll give it to him again not much Running Room he's got one down to the 12 the big defensive tackles in the middle they're not always the best pass rushers but they are strong and I say country they put their hands on you you feel it they lock people out on the line of scrimmage they create separation to wrap running backs up and usually they don't get out of the midst of those big boys leaves it with the back he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense man those are so hard to defend you know the quarterback obviously he's doing the Run pass option and creating some indecision in my head and look at that he hands it off and the back gets a quick 10 easy you know like just chews up yardage just really really tough to stop those kind of plays they'll try to blast their way in and he is just engulfed at the line by this giant defensive tackle boy there wasn't much room to wiggle for that running back there none at all great job by the defense getting the Back Field quickly closing up all the holes nowhere to run and the D deny them on second and goal trying to bully their way in Into The End Zone he goes touchdown Iowa State you know what methusa lived 969 years he was born and died in the amount of time it took them to walk it down the field and score that touchdown that's just so frustrating play after play after play you line up you try to do your assignment and you fail and they cap it off with a touchdown oh methus P unit on the field and it's up and good precise Relentless execution on that 13pl scoring drive and it was closed out by the short yardage touchdown and we're all square as he's set to kick it away on the run from inside is 25 maybe if he could have eluded just one or two more guys it would have been a big return but they'll mark it at the 30 Iowa has it back on offense hoping to ride the wave to the end zone now they need to put something together to answer that last score there's a lot of pressure too on this offense to have to execute at a high level they've got to score points D but they can't go too fast cuz their defense right now now is tied and I think that's the difficulty being a play call like I have to balance all of those things my defense is a little bit tired I can't get on the field but I got to be aggressive because this is a back and forth type game so a lot to process and think about solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six from the shotgun the hand off to the back really nice stop there from this senior leader all right well the offense here they're trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this point offense breaks the Huddle it's third down back to pass it's mnea looking down the middle finds a tight end down the guts they'll get him down but not before he crosses the 50 he's down to the 49 [Applause] he'll come out throwing on first down short hands it's brown and how about that catch and run so dangerous this guy and I love the quarterback's accac hit him in St hit him where he can catch the football and continue to run and do more damage after the catch like he did right there go hand off to the lone back and how about that interior defense stuffing the run for nothing it's hard to run on a defense that comes off the ball like that and runs to the football like that good luck no holes anyway second down here and maybe they've got time to get one more snap off before the two-minute warning the clock has stopped and we've reached the two-minute warning before halftime let's see what they've got on second down oh threw it right into the teeth of double coverage he'll try to take it back he's at the 10 and he's going to run it all the way back touchdown [Applause] cyclon what a play by this defense with the pick six and how about the defender exactly what you're supposed to do breaks on the football makes the interception everybody on defense we turn to offense go lay some blocks so my guy can get it and take it back to the house lining up to tack one more onto that lead and the extra point is true and they're on top by seven that makes the score Iowa they're about to kick it away and the defense probably can't wait to get back out there after the pick six catches it inside his 20 chance to really gain some CR he's just enough space to cross the 25 let's mark it at the 27 yd line Iowa has the ball back on offense that last pick six after a drive like that David can swing the momentum of a game the defense is still celebrating I mean such a big play I mean they they gave up some yards but did what they're supposed to do now Jesse this offense has to put a job again yeah they have to recapture some momentum here what they can't do is go three and out and give the ball right back yeah and a really good job by the defender understanding the ball coming I got to break on it and go and not try to intercept it and make a bad play he swats it down to make sure that's an incompletion snagged in the middle it's Anderson he's brought down quickly minimal gain there still a bit short of the first down from the gun he'll try to throw for it on third down he's got it on the left defense on skates that time they finally drag him down at the 42 a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half the Hawkeyes will line it up on First and 10 the aerial assault continues strong pass rush gets to the quarterback and they get him at the 46 the hurry up now second down caught ticking looking for a man it's MN got his Man Down field let me tell you this senior quarterback can flat fit it in a tight window they're going to sit back in zone I'm going to make sure I know exactly what they're doing find those holes find those Crossing patterns and take advantage of that zone coverage he wants to throw fires to the right a strike downfield they make the stop but there is a flag on the field we'll see what that's all about so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty and the Hawkeyes are in the Red Zone trying play action looking to the big tight end makes the grab and he's brought to the ground but not before he gets it up for the first down I know it's something we take for granted guys but the Q did a great job there with the play action fake he really took his time and sold it and that's what froze the linebackers in the second level of the defense to help make that completion a whole lot easier the big tight end tries to make a catch and you can tell extends for the ball but great job by the defender getting in there making the hit dislodging the football out as the same time as he's going to catch it and the big tight end couldn't hold on to it going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone grabbed behind the line it's Le we got a timeout here late in the first half and they'll try to get more points on the board before the break look as an offense you're always going to take comps over incompletions and interceptions so the offense they're able to make that third down a little bit more manageable honestly not that much really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal into the end zone and he's got it touchdown Iowa yeah and the passing game comes through man and we need more of that in the second half an extra point away from tying this football game you Trail a little bit in the first half stayed calm if this passing game can continue to heat up look out in the second half up to add another splits the uprights so it's a 77 yd touchdown drive and the score comes on a 12yd touchdown pass all tied up from just about to kick it away he'll bring it back from inside is five he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 Iowa State setting the offense back out these two defenses have had their headp spinning here in the first half and now we might even see a little more scoring with this drive it's going back and forth this is like two heavyweights just trading blows David what does this defense got to do to get a stop here I I tell you what man when you're giving up points like this and you've got no momentum you got to find somebody that can make a play to create something and listen if you're if they're scoring anyways let's be aggressive let's Blitz more let's let's make sure we're making them feel discomfort in some way shape or form that's the type of explosive play you love to start a drive with first down from the 42 dropping back it's Beck unloads it left makes a connection got room to work touchdown Iowa State hauled it in and just kept right on running to the Hallelujah land man how hard is it to defend when you have a weapon like this and running back that can play wide receiver you can design ways to get the football in his hand Palmer you get in his hands he'll do the rest yeah no doubt I mean and often times those are easier throws for quarterbacks and these running backs they're just naturally so good when they have the football out in space their Vision their creativity their ability to make people miss and this guy showed you right there a difficult difficult guy to stop now if you're this defense moving forward getting set for the point after and with the extra point the score is now 21-4 aggressive play calling on that drive just two plays they get the long touchdown pass to pay it off they're just about ready to kick it away looking for an alley from inside his own 20 able to find enough room to get it out across the 25 he's brought down at the 26 just a few seconds remaining here as they try to put something up before halftime the give to the back banging slithering whatever it takes to get that ball up to the 32 they'll use a timeout right before halftime maybe time for one or two more plays got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four to the air it's mamera good job to toss that ball out of bounds and avoid the loss they'll have just enough enough time to get one more snap before the half they'll go to the air he LS it high and deep down the left side he can haul it in incomplete they took a shot but that's how we'll wrap up the half we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connors in our halftime update fellas it's one thing to have a rivalry game but when you have two longtime foes operated by roughly 100 miles duking it out for the shawk trophy you know emotions tend to run high and it's been said football is a game of inches and guess what based on the comparison between third down conversion rate today and the average yard per of plays we've seen in panic but really this game is going to come down to which team is more efficient when they have the ball and how they play when it matters most the Hawkeyes will kick it away to start the second half on the run from inside his own five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 Iowa state has the ball back the Cyclones ready to go on offense they had this lead to start the third quarter because of the passing game didn't get a lot done on the ground they didn't but the quarterback is in a rhythm that was obvious in the first half and so this first drive you want to continue that you want to see good decision making you want to see him playing on time and as always delivering the football I I mean I don't know how I don't give him the football it's the reason I built the lead he's the guy that I can trust this offense is built around him so I expect more of the same here in the second half 8yd pick up on first down leaves him with second and short out of the gun they'll run it inside he maybe gets a yard they'll Mark him at the 29 I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physical you hear a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run Here Comes This Home crowd as the defense tries to get off the field on third down to the ground to try to move the he'll make a play on third down he's got enough for the first as they mark it at the 32 that is how it's done on third down and short and no doubt about it an easy hole to get through and clearly get the first down if you really want to simplify football the low man wins that time the offense got the better of the D easily picked that up the Cyclones come to the line with a fresh set of downs they'll give it to the back what a Nifty one there to pick up the first down this is going to be a big key for him David with the lead here in the second half running the football right staying on the field and bleeding the clock yeah run the football you're ahead you can be a little bit more conservative but again this opens up the pass this keeps everything in balance for this offense and the Cyclones are on the move coming out on first down with the play fake at the 40 there he goes he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down he can throw it he can buy time he can run it what what can't he do this guy's so talented when he does stuff like this there's no way to stop it there's no way to coach a defense up against us he's just really fast and I can't catch him no big secret what they're trying to do here they've kept it on the ground it's first and 10 they'll run it from the gun he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple we're trying to run the ball on first down guys but just nothing doing up front their offensive line got blown up on that play there was nowhere for that guy to go the negative play leaves him with second and 12 the give to the back not a lot going on there picked up [Music] [Applause] [Applause] a third and long from the 30 yd line in this defense hoping to knock them out of field goal range scanning the field it's Beck he put some heat on that one down the middle almost intercepted and what a momentum swing that could have been but they still force a fourth down nice job by the defense they're mixing up their look there third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on the quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the in now on fourth down they'll send out the field goal unit and there is a degree of difficulty with this one at 47 y from the right hch thought he had it and couldn't get it through the upright he missed it and the margin remains at seven after the [Music] Miss it's hoping to ride the wave to The End [Music] Zone after the Miss on the 47 yd field goal attempt they'll put in play from Their Own 30yd Line the give is to Williams and the defense holds firm no pick up at all on that play and the Hawkeyes are in the hurry up on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage really good defense you know you're trying to stay as close as you can to all these targets and most importantly those open field tackles and getting them on the ground as soon as they catch it that's a major for defenses that was a good example there of it on Third and long trying to have a big completion here oh they really could have used that catch their physical pass defense it brings up a fourth down this is a point where you just got to be able to focus and the critical down and distances in this game like that third down right there when it's a good throw you got to make the catch you've got to be able to make that play fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way looks it all the way in and now turns attention up field they'll get down and put a stop to the return at about the 28 yd line Iowa State sending the offense back out we talk about settling for points but sometimes when you have to settle for nothing David it can be demoralizing yeah it can definitely be frustrating and I think it leads you to say maybe I go for it more but Jesse I think this off just needs to put another drive together and just finish Stronger Yeah and and be a little bit less predictable too especially as they get closer and closer down to the end zone when your best is demanded on a big stage like this against a rival he has delivered cracking the 150 yard Mark no doubt about it what do we say big time players make big plays in big games the games don't get bigger than this for this team right here and this guy David has shown up today and it's so nice as a coach to have that d that you know you can count on he'll put up big numbers and he's been carrying this offense you know it's so important for offenses to want to keep third Downs manageable the way you do that is by having success like that running the football on first down got three on first down it's second and seven now the quarterback changing the original play call they'll run this one off right tackle he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three [Music] [Applause] third that's the end of the period and Iowa state has the lead they've built a cushion they've got a nice lead now the task is finish the deal as you take a look at the third quarter steps one more period to go to see who can make the winning plays and come home with the victory back on the field after the break and we'll start the quarter here on third down looking to throw it's Beck throws to the wide out he's got an open man and they are pushing the ball down the field a big pick up on that one and the tackle is finally made this dude is just exceptional in every facet so fluid such a great route Runner and a big play there and money down third down find him I mean you want to find that match up because he's going to win and gets a good release gets down the field you see his that's your playmaker that's your guy get it to him get the first down quick handoff he get him down Tough Run picks up four they'll mark it at the 19 y up after the productive first down play it's second and six to give to the back and they drag him down but not before he picks up the first down and you know big chunks like this don't happen unless you commit to the Run game you got to get those big boys up front into the game understanding I want to knock people off the football create some holes like you do here from my running back make the game easy and this defense has to step forward not only do they have to get a stop they've got to do it quickly to keep that time from running down keeping it on the ground on first and goal they get him on the ground at the three yd line but this defense is taking some punches you got to give the coaching staff credit because they really do Focus all season long on situational football with the lead late in the game if we're on offense we're trying to stay in bounds trying to bleed the clock and after ripping off a really nice run that guy knew I've got to get down I cannot get pushed out of bounds cannot get tackled out of bounds really really nice job barrels ahead and he takes it in for the score touchdown Cyclones the Cyclones keep gaining strength and Iowa State stretches out its lead man gaining strength gaining momentum gaining belief right like gaining belief that you can get this done such a big rivalry game with so much emotion yeah Iowa feels like they're in a natural disaster right now they feel like they're in a cyclone they don't know which way is up or down they are lost he'll try to tack on one more and the extra point is true and they have a two touchdown lead up 14 in the fourth they marched 72 yds and close the deal with a three- yd touchdown run the kickoff team out there and ready to go from inside the 20 chance for great field position probably needed to pick up an extra block or two but as it is he'll be stopped at the 28 Iowa has the ball back on offense boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really click no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here P yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit on this yeah and I I don't know what happened he didn't look open as it is and the QB's trying to make a play trying to force the ball but at least he threw it where his guy can catch it or nobody could catch it and the incompletion brings up a second down for this offense to the air it's mamra fires to the big fella this offense has their work cut out for him man because the coverage has been so tight and if you're not throwing to the sideline or you're not getting past the sticks this defense is going to tackle you in bounds like they just did on that last play and bleed the clock and they wanted it all on third down but now dealing with fourth down and the defense is playing with a sense of urgency right now obviously they're playing with the lead they know this offense needs to find a way to generate points expecting a shot on that last play so nice job in coverage down by multiple possessions they can't come up empty on this drive in the fourth quarter they'll go for it on fourth down the completion well past the sticks and he's knocked down but not before moving the chains the Hawkeyes racing to the line in the hurry up he's looking to throw it got him down field lots of green grass as he gets it to the 31 this offense absolutely humming as they come to the line again well how about the offense setting that play up we've seen earlier in the game a couple shorter throws just trying to suck those safeties closer the line of scrimmage anticipating that they would get an opportunity to take a shot they called the perfect play at the perfect time right there back to the air one more time and he really need needed to hold on to that one but it was not loose and third down is coming trying to pick up a first [Applause] down looking to throw on third he's got it on the Run gets out of bounds after the big game but they've got it first and goal they absolutely had to have that third down to keep any glimmer of hope alive and defensively that's exactly what I want make you get to third down the clock is your enemy multiple possession lead that is right where I want this offense and he can't quite make the connection as he was trying to pay off this Red Zone opportunity and that's just a huge Miss opportunity on offense QB missed his guy wide open in the end zone you might not get another clean look like that in the rest of this game defense rolls up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long [Applause] coming he's got it and he wanted the score badly but the defense wrestles him down at the two it's third down now and they ought to be able to get off one more play before the two-minute warning we reached the two-minute warning and we see miracles in college football all of the time and they could use one here okay and they'll come to the line and try to draw a little bit closer on Third and goal SP dropping back it's mnea can't makes the grab as he was going for six right there one third and short in field goal range they dial up the pass play quarterback was trying to get through his progressions there was just simply nobody open couldn't make an accurate enough throw ball Falls incomplete Now setting up a big decision here on fourth down now the play F they got him the pressure got home and the defense makes sure this Drive comes up empty after being stopped there on fourth down this game's pretty much over they were going to have to go down in a two-minute situation and put at least seven up on the board they couldn't get it done things just haven't gone their way it's been that type of day today they're going to leave the stadium with the loss they'll keep it on the ground to keep this clock moving defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense and these defensive tackles just eat people they swallow human beings when you get near them they're so big so strong those guys those running backs coming they just need a m they put one mid on a running back and he usually falls to the ground just because of their sheer mass and strength power football with the Run they needed that extra space as he bangs his way to the 14 timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible the they've got them P deep in their own end and this crowd trying to help keep them there from the gun he leaves it with the back and they're able to get a third down stop here see if they go for it on Fourth quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense the cycl will putt this one away they'll have to punt for the first time this afternoon a lowline drive and short kick not able to pop the big return but they've got the ball back and ready to go with a fresh possession Iowa has it back on offense hoping to ride the wave to The End Zone on that last Drive fourth and goal didn't exactly work out they really need to pay it off this time Jesse they were so anxious and eager to get back on the field they know they left points on the board they let that one get away from them they look like they are pumped up and ready to go here D And listen it was a good DFT so you got to remember that but they got to realize I got to get points when I get in those areas I got to capitalize and they wanted a touchdown last time this drive they can go make it happen wide open down field there to make the tackle but the big throw is good enough to give them a first down trying to C drive with the pass it's incomplete he was shooting for the end zone right there and that is a huge missed opportunity for the quarterback you've got your guy wide open in the end zone you're not under pressure you just got to hit him that ball got away that's one he'd like to have back operating in the Red Zone here on second down looking downfield it's mamera b a little time lets it Go got the back over the middle that complet it will take it close to the 5 yd line they'll mark it at the six looking to throw for it lets it go to the end zone and it's grab for the late touchdown and how about this it's not over yet if we had any chance to make this happen we had to score was a little bit of time on the clock now we need a miracle now now we need to kick the onside get inside kick and somehow someway make a big play and it looks as if they buzzed down replay wants to have another peek at that last play after taking another look just to confirm everything the officials on the field got it right way will stand [Music] they'll try to attack one more on their score and the extra point cuts the lead to seven 2821 a very efficient five play scoring drive and they get it into the end zone with a 6yd touchdown pass just over 50 seconds to go they're trying to pull off a comeback and they'll need to get get this onside kick to do it cool as a cucumber as the hands team makes a sure catch and this is why you put your hands team on the field most of the time when you know it's coming and you put those guys that are great catchers of the football the first guys what do they do they go blocked they go blow somebody up and next guys catch the football secure it get your butt on the ground and most of the time when you do this the ball game is over no matter how much college football changes realignment all of that kind of stuff rivalries are consistent and winning rivalry games well that's just the best because they hate each other so much so you take the field against your rival you're able to put forth a performance like that that is worth its weight and goal David unbelievable effort here by the winning team and bragging rights now for a while bragging rights for a while it's it's a fun thing to be able to accomplish now we also got to take in the next couple games cuz this is always there's a let down that naturally happens after these big rivalry wins we feel like our chest is poked out we got
