[Applause] the youth will get us started with the opening [Applause] kickoff you'll call for the fair catch here [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] offense getting set for first [Music] down 25 to the air it's drones it's complete to the right it can get pretty wild in the Big 12 some of these outposts are like snake pits when you have to go on the road got to get off to a quick start in conference play it is always wacky Reese like there's always something that happens in the Big 12 and somebody comes out of nowhere in the Big 12 every single year so starting in conference play Palmer these games start to really matter really add up and the pressure amplifies it's so true too when you think about the Big 12 Conference it just seems like teams get caught sleep bling so you've got to start fast the challenge I think for these coaches stats these two teams every week they've got to have their team ready to go and it starts today as college football involves guys and players have more rights and they capitalize on name image and likeness and teams are in different conferences maybe the biggest thing and the thing that keeps coaches up at night dealing with the transfer portal because they got to make sure that everybody in their locker room is happy and often times you're re recruiting your own players and trying to keep the Wolves at Bay and the phone calls that are coming in from other programs trying to steal your guys it is not easy probably as difficult as it's ever been David to be a head coach now with a transfer qut it is and think about players man if I'm not happy if I'm not getting the run I want like I can just leave I can go get some go somewhere else I can get paid by another opportunity so I think players always having their having their eyes to that portal looking at a better destination makes it miserable for coaches everybody on the same page there on Blitz pickup right offensive line everybody communicating understanding where they have to work to give their KV time to make an accurate throw and pick up the first he's got the tight end and he was able to get away from one tackle but plenty of help was on the way decent pick up on that play that last completion has him set up second and short quarterback will audible wants to throw it's drones takes it easy he went to the back and they knock him down but he got past The Line Game I just love quarterbacks that aren't really that aren't always trying to throw the Home Run ball right second down you're in your own end of the field the guy you want to throw to's not open just find the back he'll go do something positive with it this guy is a weapon and you got to find him in the pass and they'll bring him to the ground after a short gain yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the tempo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge after picking up a couple it's second and eight 42 SPID fast motion from the offense quarterback wants to throw on second down caught over the middle it's Lane makes that one pay off and they finally get him down at the 38 in the Le first down love that throw I'll tell you if he keeps making more of those Lane stadium in this incredible crowd is going to be going nuts we've called games here plenty times in the past this is one of the best venues in all of college football and this guy right now is heating up at the QB position watch out it's going to be a sonic boom in here he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple I love this linebacker because he's able to dissect what's happening in front of him and he reacts downhill uses his speed to get to the line of scrimmage and create the negative play trying play action and it'll be incomplete this is some physical pass defense well give the defense credit because they're forcing this quarterback to throw into very small Windows under duress ninth play of the drive coming up but they'll have to convert third and long to keep it going tuna tuna gorilla back to pass it's drones little too much juice on that one from the junor tell you what I don't know if the offense was expecting man coverage that time third and long in field goal range you're expecting it to be Zone instead they lock him up manto man everybody on an island everybody won they get the incompletion Now setting up fourth the hokes will send out the punt unit he ought to be able to use this first punt to pin him [Applause] deep fair catch was called for but there is a flag on the play and we'll have to sort it out so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty first down for this offense running back searching for a hole tackle is made at the 28 after a pick up of three really important for a ranked team going into a hostile environment like this one not to give the underdog reason to believe yes reason to believe and don't give the fans reason to get jacked up and excited come out early be in a business mode mindset you got to start fast you got to have a sense of urgency you cannot come sleepwalking into an environment like this because if you do and you make some mistakes this crowd will pounce on you and sees momentum he'll move it up to the 37 yd line and it'll be a first down I love when players understand situations and they understand where the first down marker is and they understand where I got to get to a lot of people you'll see run north south and try to bounce out wide and make big plays sometimes it's not about making big plays sometimes it's about getting that first down to make sure I get an extra set of downs instead of trying to make those big touchdown runs you want to make sure to maximize those types of runs and he gets it out to the 41 at the 41 bring up second [Applause] this crowd going to try to make life miserable for these guys power football with the Run nowhere to run on that when he loses four on the carry and there was no space nowhere to go that play went absolutely nowhere sometimes you just need a dude to show up and make a play and he did sometimes you just need to block that dude decb Rising as the crowd Gets behind this defense on third down to the air it's rising unloads to the wide out and a missed opportunity on third down as the defense knocks it free and fourth down is coming up and the yous line up to punt it away let's see if he can help the coverage team out with this one not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair Catch [Music] [Applause] and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field that last one looked like a back breaking Drive David but they ended up hting yeah they put some plays together put some yards together but the most important stat is putting points on the board and this offense has to finish Jesse when they get across that 50 yd line and start getting in scoring territory yeah there there was some good execution no doubt about it but I think it's the critical down in distances third down in particular they've got to be better moving forward the give to the back still running at the 40 oh look out there he goes at the 20 touchdown Virginia T and once he got loose it was all open and with that first touchdown the old hokey stones are trembling playing in this great stadium and such great fans in Lane Stadium early in the game has a reason to be rocking they get on the scoreboard first everybody going bananas and the extra point is good and it's 7 nothing that drive took no time at all couple of plays and finished it with the long run for the touchdown the kickoff team takes the field to boot this one away [Applause] and the ball will make it into the end zone no return on that one for a [Music] Touchback Utah has it back in the offense coming onto the field David the punter got some work last time they'd like to keep him on the sideline in this drive yeah it's not something you want to say very often you don't want the pun right there this offense need to get back lathered up and get a little bit more of a r best way to do that identify where your best players are and just get them the football give these guys some touches to Kickstart this offense let me tell you this senior quarterback can flat fit it in a tight window this is a tight end that not only is going to play with his hand in the ground but he can line up in the slot as well and attack the defense vertically he's too fast for linebackers to cover and he's too big for DBS to cover he's a real weapon in this offense shakes off the defender they can rely on this guy to pick up solid yardage when they need it and he's out to the 43 well it's plays like that that'll help this offense stay in Rhythm all game long if you can have that kind of success on first down running the football it just opens up your entire Playbook moving forward caught near the sticks it's Alfred a quick tackle may but he's got plenty for the first down first for the the UTS come to the line with a fresh set of downs easy that's the end of the first quarter Utah [Applause] Z back at it to open the quarter with this first down play a little pre- snap eye candy for the defense they're bringing heat catch in the middle it's keii tackled immediately after the catch very few programs have navigated the Waters of realignment as well as Utah they became a power in the Pack 12 we'd expect the same here in the Big 12 I I admire their program so much over the last several years because of what they're built on they've got so much much physicality and substance and just I love the way they carry themselves and look forward to seeing them fitting in the Big 12 the crazy Big 12 high scoring and you got Utah Jesse who traditionally great defense and physical kind of the opposite of the confence yeah they're tough you're exactly right David they built on good defense running the football offensively and their expectation based on what they did in the Pack 12 is to compete for championships and go to Big Time bowl games no doubt that's the same standard that they're looking to achieve here in the Big 12 the give to the tail back he showed it all there a little elusiveness a little power and he's got the first down you got to feel good for this kid too he worked so hard this past offseason to put himself in position to be the starting running back and he's got a lot of skill guys he's got speed open field running ability I think he's going to be a big part of the offense this season might as well give it to him again running it in the Red Zone imposing their will and picking up five down to the 15 hey five to six yds a pop I don't know if you guys are really good at math but that usually equals a first down every couple carries so don't forget about the Run game keep them honest pound that R halfway there on first down down it's second and five using his legs it's glover tackled but he has a first down and this offense has got it all working right it's just been tough this this defense is on heals can't figure it out a bunch of plays in a row now bunch of success this offense is doing what they want to do how they want to do it defense is going to need to do something different to try to mix up this Rhythm by is a little tie zings it complete to the right they get it down to the seven on that pass play in Prime position for a score man one of the reasons this guy's dangerous is cuz if things get off schedule he can still hurt you there was no Panic right he's not just going to take off and go running he kept his Focus downfield spotted an open guy and man delivered a strike defense rolls up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming now on the option now the toss that might have been a bad read as the defense just swarms all over the pitch man it's looking like they're going to have to try to throw this one into the end zone here on third down David quarterback's got to be careful can't get greedy cuz you know these windows they close fast extremely tight Windows find your big body guys that you know can win in contested situations here on third down it's still third and goal oh looking downfield it's ryy can't make the connection on third down thanks to that tough hard noos pass defense and now it's Fourth Down nice job by the defense they're mixing up their look they're third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on their quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion now looks as if they'll settle for the field goal try and this one splits the [Applause] upright they'll kick it away after putting up a field goal on that last drive fair catch called for and me and we're about to get another look at this hooki offense that last Drive really productive David wound up with a touchdown they'll try to do it again yeah so I don't expect this offense to change too much Reese they had a great Drive they got the touchdown everything working I would expect them to keep pushing this ball down here and just imagine if they could put another touchdown on the board right here they could capture so much momentum in this game with backto back TDS looking to go up top on first down he makes the connection he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down and a really nice job by the wide receiver you run a drag route find Space they're in zone coverage they're not covering manto man find a little hole look at that QB y'all get on the same page could tell they were and that's why they got the first [Applause] down Qui completion to the right he's Off to the Races he's at the 10 and he takes it all the way they couldn't stop him touchdown hokei when that receiver got free it was all over and it's so nice to have a receiver like this as a quarterback cuz you have my stats I like those long touchdown passes where I just threw it really short and he did the rest of the work and the extra point is good and they have an 11-point lead quick strike offense on that three-play scoring drive and the scoring play coming on a 56 yd touchdown [Applause] pass he almost kicked that thing out of bounds but it made it into the end zone and it'll will be a [Applause] Touchback Utah offense returns ready to go back on the attack always good to get points on a drive David but Chip Shot field goals can leave you a little empty and I think it's great to get points but the great teams get touchdowns in the red area you got to get out there this time and execute a little better on this drive you're absolutely right David generally the best Red Zone offenses are the ones that run the ball the best let's see if they can be a little bit more physical on this drive we've made our way to the two-minute warning and now they'll try to at least cut a little something off of this lead before the break after the first down completion at second and short on the ground it's Bernard still on his feet at the 45 he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pickup and moving the sticks for a first down what a run man I tell you what it's hard to pop runs it's hard to get three four five six yards a lot of times but when you got backs like this who can make huge plays with the speed getting out in the open field can take it the distance on every play defenses are scared out of their mind grab behind the line it's Alfred find crease at the 20 he was working his way toward that goal line they'll stop him at the two after the big play up top how nice as it as a quarterback when you don't have to throw post routes to get great stats no I can just throw it quickly to one of the fastest players in the entire nation and let him burn this defense first and goal and a great opportunity to slice into this lead blue blue DB's lock up tight on the receivers they're going to run it he works his way ever closer all the way down to the one yd line man that D tackle is a freak athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness looking for just one more yard it's second and goal 42 spider 42 spider and this one will be stopped for No Gain well he gets tackled down at the one yd line so offensively do you feel confident enough on third here trying to hand it off again yeah and I'm taking both these downs and I'm coming down here I'm running the football trying to get this in the end zone I only got a yard to go I got to be physical touch pass on the Jet Sweep and into the end zone he goes touchdown Utah UT and I tell you what that passing touchdown man that should spark this whole team like The Comeback is more than on now like they got the touchdown they cut into the lead you want to get a stop and go into the half get all the juices all the excitement and be like listen the passing game's rolling we got this The Comebacks in full effect and the Pat will draw them one point closer so that scoring Drive took only six plays was capped off by a one ydd touchdown pass they're lining up to boot it [Applause] away and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive at their own 25 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field they've got time they've got the lead and David is sort of like a doctor first Do no harm Do no harm but also momentum is hard to create and sometimes hard to stop you have it so Jesse don't do anything stupid to create some momentum for the other side I think a lot of this comes down to your quarterback and whether or not he's making good decisions in this game if yes be aggressive if not let's just take the lead into halftime and get ready for the second half they got nothing on the last play it's second and [Applause] 10 slide 22 slide 22 wide out in motion but Jet Sweep pass he's got enough for the first down they'll spot it at the 37 we've got a timeout in the waning seconds of the half maybe a chance to get off a couple more plays just a few seconds remaining here as they try to put something up before halftime off the play fake on first down to throw wide open downfield just gashing this defense a big Gainer to the 40 y line quick timeout called by the offense after the [Applause] [Music] [Applause] play they'll have just enough time to get one more snap before the half easy to the air on first down buys a little time with his feet pass is incomplete and that's going to do it for the first half we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connors in our halftime [Applause] update and the hokes will line up to kick offense start the second [Applause] half he'll start the return inside is five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Utah has it back and the offense coming onto the field tight game as we start the third quarter and we'll see what type of adjustments they made at halftime and getting the ball first here I think is such a big deal like I get the first chance to make a statement to make the adjustments to create some momentum for my squad right here in the third quarter yeah I think it's so important for this offense to set the tone here early in the second half to get a nice drive going build that confidence and and get your defense ready to come on out get a stop and change the complexity of this game they'll snap this one from the 32 it's first down looking for a crease it's Bernard and maybe he'll get back to the line of scrimmage but no more than that on the play that back had absolutely nowhere to run the football actually is he counting I think he's counting to make sure there's only 11 guys on defense got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 dropping back it's ryy throws for the tight end and that pass intercepted taking it the other way he'll finally go out of bounds but he was showing off all the skills after that interception a lot of quarterbacks have so much confidence they can fit the ball in tight Windows how about the defensive player right here making an unbelievable interception forcing the turnover big play Big momentum SC working his way and keeping those legs moving picks up five down to the 14 I like it just frustrate the defense get that five to six yards make him onor the Run make him know that you're willing to run the football and run it effectively going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone the give to the back and you can forget running in the middle against this defense if you're going to stop the run game you better be physical up front on the defensive line they've got some MERS they've got some dudes with bad intentions nice play there got it boy they'd love to move the sticks here and take a shot at it on first and goal oh it's a reverse got some room headed to the goal line touchdown Virginia T and they add six more to the mor of Anette trip to the house the offense flexes its muscle a bit and widens the Gap take a little exhale you know you did your job you got points now you put your defense in a position where hey go out and get another stop we're in great shape so the offense definitely taking care of their business and the extra point is good and they have an 11-point lead quick strike offense on that three-play scoring drive and they finished it off with a 14 yd run from the score about to kick it off after punch get in for the [Applause] touchdown he wisely lets that one bounce through the back of the end zone and they'll take over at the [Applause] 25 the Utah offense turns ready to go back on the attack after that last pick David they really need to take care of the ball this time no doubt and Palmer I want to know what spur said to you on the sideline after a pick do that again and you'll be right here beside me for the rest of the game just flying through the air like a superhero to make the grab man I I love those guys that are willing to put their body on the line and he does it right here man just lays out that Ball's coming in you can see it from several yards out making that play laying out keeping the football from touching the turf great concentration great effort by the receiver he wants to throw got it in the middle it's Alfred and that's a very productive first down play and bringing up second and three and quarterback receiver on the same page nice job seeing the Zone understanding the drag route concept easy pitch easy catch now on second and short after the first down completion the give to the running back from the shotgun and maybe they want to try somewhere else because there is nothing doing in the middle of this defense great team defense on that one play everybody doing their job people winning their one-on ons D lineman staying in their gaps linebackers and DBS filling you just can't do it they turn to the passing game on Third and short oh picked off trying to take it back he's at the 40 he Steeps out of bounds after a huge play but hang on just a second defense might get bailed out here by a flag and the UTS come to the line with a new set of downs going to run it it's Bernard One Step WRA Two Step squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground small game I know but again the defense knows he's going to run the football he's willing to run the football not just drop back and pass make him on to the Run game you got to do a lot of this after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven dropping back it's ryy now he's going to Glide away from pressure and he'll just get rid of that me and that goes down as incompletion but that's a smart play and the QB coach and the OC would be very happy with the decision of the quarterback he got outside the pocket he obviously so he's outside The Tackle Box he a newe can throw it away as long as he got it past the line of scrimmage nothing there nothing open Live to fight another day and this offense can ill forward to come up empty on this drive already trailing by multiple possessions leaves it with the running back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one great job by the defense everybody fired off the ball H their guys holding their gaps running to the football nowhere to go the yous will bring the punt team onto the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it away [Applause] and we're about to get another look at this hokey offense David they love to do what they did last time and put this one in the end zone you ain't lying they did a great job the offense was clicking everything went well Palmer they executed and got the touchdown and they really were in a nice Rhythm as well and I'd love to see that here on the next drive too just keep doing what you're doing everything seems to be working and you seem to have this defense on their heels didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 that pass is incomplete and they're probably fortunate that it wasn't not free for a fumble and finally the defense is able to get some pressure on this quarterback they've been trying all game long different ways to affect him weren't able to get there but on that play because of the pressure it affected his accuracy and that's why the ball Falls incomplete got it in the middle it's toon that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk explosive plays the defense finally able to make the stop with the first down they'll put it in play from the 3 three takes the hand off it's toon you want to make sure to maximize those types of runs and he gets it out to the 41 he's up to 94 yds on the day and the defense has been getting a steady di to this dude on opening [Applause] day from the gun the ground game and they try the middle of this Stout defense and they rise to the challenge on the play that's a big stop for the defense that running back has had so much success you're down in the football game you need to get the ball back to your offense you create a play like this this will get the fires going get the juices going now we got to go get a few more lining up trying to convert this third and short from the 40s poing to throw for it and he was hit just as he was releasing the pass and it fall to the ground incomplete that's how you blow up the screen pass up here on defense you got to hit the quarterback fast Force the incompletion fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way he'll bring it back it's Bernard really explosive when he gets his hands on the ball and he found a couple of crevices and made a nice game before being run out of bounds first down here for the [Applause] [Music] offense trying to start the drive with a pass catch in the middle it's Bernard excellent job working through the air there finding a hole in that defense and picking up a first down that's the end of the third quarter with the score Virginia 21 Utah 10 here's this offense with a fresh set of [Applause] downs motion by the back forces the defense to [Applause] adjust outside the pocket let's go makes the grab good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch this defense better not blink I know they've got a lead here in the fourth quarter but just look at who they're going against this quarterback is one of the best in the nation they cannot rest on their Laurels someone's going to have to make a play coming out on first down with the play fate makes the catch it's Alfred this offense has their work cut out for him man because the coverage has been so so tight and if you're not throwing to the sideline or you're not getting past the sticks this defense is going to tackle you inbounds like they just did on that last play and bleed the clock offense gets set for second down carrier here we go on the run it's Randle at the 20 he's got space and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pickup yeah and this offense listen we're in forp speed right we got we got to score a bunch of points here we're down we're trailing we got to go fast but we also got to get first downs and that's a nice job sneaking in the Run getting the first down and now we crank the tempo back up from the gun the running back has it he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple they're trying to run the football there's just nowhere to go for the ball carrier inside he tried to bounce it to the outside that linebacker way too fast he met him there and forced the tfl after losing yardage is second and 12 looking downfield it's rising that pass is incomplete and they might be fortunate it was a knock free for a fumble it'll be third down this pass rush is serious man when you watch them on film they do a nice job in the back end taking away all the throws downfield he's trying to get to his check down but that pressure gets to him and they hit forc the incomplete on Third and long trying to have a big completion here nice defensive play to get a hand in there and knock it away and the offense got themselves in a tough situation third and long so hard to execute especially when the field starts to shrink but the good news is they got a field goal in their back pocket and for the second time tonight they'll Trot out the field goal kicker not a chance missed it my goodness you need those field goals guys to cut into that deficit you're still at 11 and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field here's another opportunity Jesse to stretch out this lead after punting last time I think it goes back to your Playmakers reys I think it's finding the guys that have been working for you earlier on in this game and getting them the football yeah and there's obviously no need to painting I mean think about it you got the lead you got the football you got to be smart with the football make your plays put a good drive together [Applause] here up trying to convert this second and short rer cricket from the shotgun now here's an inside GI a run up the middle is stuck for no game as an offense you've got the lead you've had success running the football you hope that this play is just a blit because you know you're going to have to lean on your bcow running back to ice this game and close it out fairly manageable distance here on third down from the 27 looking for a man it's drones he finds a soft spot in the middle boy did he look as if he was going to go gets it down to the 37 I don't know if they're trying to get this guy Heisman consideration but the fact that they're still throwing the ball at this point of the game with a lead like they have is surprising I got to be honest 42 SPID they'll keep it on the ground they want this clock to move he just broke the century mark 100 yd rushing in this offense wanted to establish the ground game and man have they started the season right in that regard got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four go quarterback checking off on second down looking again to throw and it'll be incomplete this defense is physical and pass deep big tight end tries to make a catch and you can tell extends for the ball but great job by the defender getting in there making the hit dislodging the football out as the same time as he's going to catch it and the big tight end couldn't hold on to it find his man last time now they'll have to convert third and four 29 Philly 29 Philly movement here from the tight [Applause] end from the gun the G looking for room and the defense knew exactly where that first down line was and they stopped him short well they're going with the Run pass option look there trying to get that first down they hand it off just not able to get it it was a nice effort by the back but ultimately now forcing fourth and short and if I'm on offense I think I'm staying on the field and going for this again on fourth down flexing that muscle in the Run game he didn't make it they'll have to give up the football and hope is still alive I think that might be the very definition of just trying to rub salt in the wound right you got the lead um multiple possessions you're looking really really good you late in the ball game and and you go for it again so you're just trying to listen it's their job to stock you I like the offense doing what they do forget you defense get a stop that's your job and you did it linebackers trying to create some confusion he'll start this drive firing and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second down coming it's it seemed like there may have been a miscommunication there between the QB and receiver just not on the same page line getting set on second down looking for a man it's rising finds a spot in the middle he's close to the first down but they're going to Mark him just a little short and I love when you understand when I'm supposed to put some RPMs on that football you can tell he's thrown over the middle of the field he knows he's got Defenders there I got to throw this thing in there quick fast in a hurry nice job by the quarterback he's going to look for a man on Third and short grabbed in the middle it's Bernard and he was just a couple of steps away from taking that one even further after the catch and the youth in the hurry up they absolutely had to have that third down to keep any glimmer of hope alive and defensively that's exactly what I want make you get to third down the clock is your enemy multiple possession lead that is right where I want this offense brought down at the 25 yd line give him 15 yds on the pickup and this offense is threatening the UTS getting set on First and 10 they want to just keep throwing it and the pass is intercepted they didn't give him much of a chance to make that play even bigger but the turnover has him set up at the 16 that should be the nail in the C what a great break on the football getting the big turnover you got the lead now just go out there be smart on offense and run that clock looking for a gap it's toon and the defense doing a great job committing to the run when you commit to the run like this obviously you can give up some plays in the passing game but you got to stop the run first they'll be perfectly tends to go right back to the ground here on second and eight 22 22 they'll run it trying to drain time off the clock at the 35 he's loose running toward the tape he was off to the racism maybe another step or two and he would have scored but they get him at the 21 yd line man this is where the defense knows they have to make a play You're ripping at the football trying to force a fumble doing whatever you can late in this football game to try to give your offense a chance with the football because otherwise that clock's just going to continue to tick and this one's going to be over running out the clock seems to be a mere four it here as they are ready to snap it in Victory [Applause] formation here comes the offense on second down happy with the situation the quarterback will take a [Applause] knee got it with the clock running this should be the final play we waited so long to start the season and just the way you want to start getting that first Victory and the first games are so much fun you've been practicing
