Oregon vs. Idaho Game Recap - College Football Week 1

all right what's up it's Max mingon here with Bobby Howard for the recap of Oregon Idaho Oregon pulled out the win 24-4 and despite all the um comments that we got on the preview saying that Oregon uh or excuse me Idaho could not cover the 46 and a half spread that's exactly what they did um as I figured what happened I didn't think that the score would be like this close and Oregon dis having um an amazing passing yards and completion percentage effort from Dylan Gabriel who threw 49 passes by the way for 380 yards you would I would have been shocked if you told me that the score end up being 24 to4 but um so to start off with if you're idahoan give yourselves a pat on the back for and if you're on the idah Vandal give yourselves a pat on the back for the effort that that team put out today that was an amazing amazing effort your FCS team you have a lot of hopes in in that in that you know world in the FCS world of football you expect yourselves to do well but to come into awson Stadium week one and you know be in the game with Oregon up until the final few minutes of the game what an effort by the vandals that was a great I know she be proud of themselves oh absolutely um they just completely gutted this game out I I think we one of the things we said in our preview is if Idaho wants to be successful you just have to kind of grind it down keep it close and then have your moments matter and you know for a while there that that was working you know um it was one of those games where you kept like kind of watching it be like man how is Oregon only up 14 this makes no sense boom couple big plays go your way for Idaho you have yourself a ball game it was a a three-point game you know pretty deep into this one um so a lot of credit to Idaho they fought really hard really scrapped and were genuinely the more disciplined consistent unit um and I I think when you look at the numbers you know that's why Idaho is in this game is they didn't make mistakes Oregon made a ton of them um and they don't show up on the box score like you don't you're not going to see a bunch of picks from Gabriel um but you know it's it's the it's the turnover on Downs it's the fumble it's uh penalties in the wrong spot you know the or Oregon did not do themselves any favor for um you know to really you know separate themselves in this one yeah it it's like the box score versus what actually happened is so weird like again Dylan Gabriel 49 he threw 49 passes completed 41 of them for 380 yards and you you know I was watching the game at at the same time as the Notre Dame A&M game so I would kind I it was hard for me to exactly figure out what was going on um but I was also kind of like I saw some Oregon fans and former players tweeting about the game and it seems like a lot of what was happening was Dylan Gabriel was just throwing short yardage passes checkdowns things of that nature they didn't really throw deep at all they didn't really do too much offensively that you know you're used to seeing Oregon in the bonick era do um now that could be on purpose because you don't want to show Too Much especially when you know you're gonna face tougher opponents in the future namely Boise State coming in uh next week who they're they're going to be a tough out as well but yeah it was just like a a lot of you know check Downs short passes and really making a lot of easy throws I think what Idaho really did well was one of the keys of the game keys keys of the game that we mentioned in the preview was they were able to really um show up at the line of scrimmage I won't say they control the line line of scrimmage I think Oregon did do a good job at the line of scrimmage as well but I think Idaho did H held their own and and they made sure that the game was not fastpaced it was a slow burn and you take the you take the crowd out of the game like 14-0 at halftime the crowd's bored you know they're not really gonna be into it they're not going to be really loud so uh shout out to Jason um EK and that coaching staff I mean they came prepared to play and um I mean hats off to them organs got some soul searching to do I think they'll be fine but you know you got to figure out how to clean things up before uh next week I think a lot of the problems that Oregon had in this game are solvable there are a lot of things you can do to tighten this up um I mentioned the penalty yardage uh they had eight penalties for 60 like 60 yards of penalty penalties with eight pins they that's that's not good um and they especially when they come at bad opportunities when they're trying to extend drives that's that's horrible um I do want to address something you said earlier about uh Gabriel uh about the short yard passage or passing all of that that's a valid concern he has had this issue at Oklahoma he had it at UCF uh we don't call him dump down Dylan for nothing uh because that's that's just kind of that's what he does he when when he does try to air it out you know his arm strength just kind of isn't there he doesn't have a big arm um so so you know and not only that but when he's looking for reads doing all of that he will usually opt out or opt out of throwing a long ball into a safer shorter pass so that's just kind of you saw that there that is a valid concern he will do that uh from time to time this was definitely one of those times one of the things I mean this is just and that's I think that's GNA be something to watch in the future let's let's you know put a pen on that put a pen on that and and see kind of where we're at I think Oregon fans that might take some getting used to but I mean yeah it's just like insane like I'm looking at the total plays organ ran 88 plays to Audi 47 and like like th this was just a really really insane uh game but I I think you know moving forward um if you're on the Idaho side you definitely feel good about okay now we can go through the rest of our season and we know that's not going to be easy ride in the FCS but you know we can go and compete and hang our hat off a good a good performance um against Oregon it doesn't mean everything you have to move on and play the games but uh this is a a it's it's good for them and they're gonna they can really build some momentum off this and um again uh well coached team I think they can they can really take this one and and be proud I mean they had it until the literally until the last few minutes but um yeah I think you know if you're Oregon fan you're scratching your head a bit if you're Idaho fan you're you're like oh well we we hung in there for for 55 minutes pretty much like it was it was a good a good game for them yeah this this week one has led me to watch a lot of FCS uh games FCS versus FBS teams um was at one of those games today with the South Dakota jack rabbits in Oklahoma State so I will say and then of course you know the massive North Dakota State Colorado game on Thursday so I've seen a lot of like the the contenders in the FCS Idaho impressed me just as much as any of them uh so you know given the competition I think they were the most impressive of of um of the bunch you know even though this one wasn't quite as down to the wies Colorado won or Oregon is a significantly tougher opponent by far um so Idaho hats off to y'all great great performance they ranked they ranked seventh in the FCS coming into this week I think they're G to get a bump up in those rankings I think Oregon might the AP is kind of weird like they I don't think they're gonna penalize Oregon too bad because they did win the game but uh that you might see a little bit of a drop um um I I think the interesting thing about these some of these F FCS opponents really having good games against the FBS teams is is might be a thing that's just unique to week week one because you have so much time to prepare and that can be great for you know a Plucky Underdog and really bad for a team that's overlooking you know the team so it might just be a week one thing I mean we'll see if there are closer FCS FBS games down the line but having you know a whole offseason pretty much to prepare for a big opponent I mean that can that that can pay dividends uh for some of these FCS teams I think it's interesting that we're all that we're seeing these close games um in in week one yeah and there there was a point you made about um in the preview about these Idaho players having a lot of ties to Oregon yeah the the quarterback who scored that uh Second touchdown for the vandals uh you like grew up going to Ducks games like there was definitely an emotional tie there at least for some of those players uh with Oregon and Idaho so you know I think that was a big part of it because you know you you think of the big the North Dakota schools or the you know North Dakota South Dakota State all of that you never see the vandals coming you never think of Idaho coming in and causing problems and here they are so um if you're a Ducks fan I'd be frustrated I I'm not I'm not going to try to candy coat this and tell you to move on and you know act like this is some sort of you know Valiant win it's not it would be frustrating the board your message boards are going to be on fire uh pretty much until you play Boise um but that being said I I there's no need to panic just yet just uh hopefully have a better performance next week against Boise State yeah I mean and I don't want to Har too much on the the the comments from the preview but I think it kind of goes to show that maybe there's there might be some either some grain pains or just a mentality shift with this Oregon team because a lot of the comments were like oh yeah organ's gonna easily put up 70 80 you know all these points and I'm like well you know we're going to see but this might be what we're looking at with Oregon you know moving forward they're going to be tough they're going to play good defense and might score they might have a lot of games under 35 and you know that just might be what the what Oregon is you know with with the quarterback that they have and the players that they have now nothing wrong with that you the goal is to win all your games you know no matter if you score 10 points or 100 but yeah it's it'll be interesting to see what this team looks like this forward moving forward
