Oklahoma vs. Temple Game Recap - College Football Week 1

what's up this Max mington here with Bobby Howard here to recap Oklahoma and Temple that was a blood bath of a game to say the least 51-3 in favor of the Sooners uh Bobby is literally uh just coming home from the game how was it in Norman man uh yeah no quite literally fresh out of the car from this one um no it was a good time in Norman uh the energy was off the charts all day long uh tailgate even though it was a Frid a rare like honestly I actually think this was the first non-black Friday Friday game home game in U history um but you know the U fans showed up they were loud they were packed and um the energy was great uh it's it's interesting because even though it was a 51-3 win I feel like um U fans and folks overall have a have a couple question about this team and you know um shoot people were people were actually grilling Jackson Arnold this is coming out um you know on Twitter post game about the game he's like dude we won 51 to3 like why are you grilling me about throwing the ball deep here like we we destroyed him yeah well let's let's dig into that because I mean first of all going back to the preview I have to Pat myself on the back for saying first of all take the under on the the game total which I believe when we recorded the preview was 59 and a half it went down to 57 and a half and uh you still got the under um either way and then I said take the under on whatever Jackson Arnold's passing yarts prop was which I believe was like 268 and a half um and it was like way under under that so if you're just looking at the Box SC it's like okay yeah you know huge win by Oklahoma but it's like all right uh Jackson arold you know 1725 not bad four touchdowns great 141 yards okay that's interesting and then even like going just to just a team offense like take the you know attention away from the quarterback for a second like you only rush for about you know 220 yards as a team um on top of the the passing so it's a a little little weird it seems like you know the yards don't match up with the points scored and I know there were a couple of um I think there was like at least one or two defensive touchdowns so obviously that that plays into it you had a few field goals as well to you know help that score but it's just kind of very interesting um but yeah from your perspective um as somebody who you know watch the whole thing because you know we're not here at sleepers we're not box Court Watchers we're ball Watchers so yeah let's let's add some context to that like what what what did the offense look like in person it was so it's interesting you know growing up an OU fan in the 2000s I mean you're you're so used to these high octane sharp offenses with I mean you know the names I don't even have to Rattle off the Heisman winners that use had um so it was a little weird seeing the offense a little clunky now they definitely did go vanilla and you know actually I wouldn't even call it vanilla it's just like if there was an ice cream Flame that was just like ice like shaved ice with no flavoring that was the offense um you know you you'd be in you know third o you would be in third and long like third and 12 and they throw a little five yard like dump down like intentional like just the weirdest offensive play calling um at times in this game um weird stat oh you was one for third down it was awful like on third down they were horrible um that's like the weirdest thing of it is they looked like they they are they put up 51 points I have no idea how they got to 51 it it's shockingly good um and I I I think like some of that is Temple was that bad like offensively the temple ow couldn't do much and I think that carried over a lot um and I think there's a lot of work that U Can Do offensively um and if you just look at the stats too like that's the thing is we we talk about the stats a lot of that was actually the second unit uh Taylor Tatum Sam Franklin uh and then Michael Hawkins Jr the backup um you know quarterback did a lot of damage uh when they came in so a lot of those flashy numbers are kind of from them um it Al Als oh go ahead sorry I didn't mean I mean overall it was just very a milk toast offensive performance um and it's weird because Oklahoma has always been about flashy offense this is a defensive team though I I think that's the biggest takeaway this is a defensive team and frankly it's Temple whatever this might be one of the better def like it it's hard to like judge defense when you're playing Temple uh and you know they're not very good they turn the ball over I believe six times in this game uh a lot of them were forced but it's just um it's a different Oklahoma than you are you and I have been used to ever you know it's never been this slanted in favor of defense and um yeah I think it showed very big today uh the offense little bit choppy a little bit weird that defense is unbelievable yeah I mean you you hit it on the head right six turnovers couple of those were like some weird like tip tril type turnovers but um I I think that's part of the context to it of like the the the yardage right you get turnovers that you know shorten the field so now you don't have to go as far to score and you can just put up points with short Fields because you're getting turnovers and and so you know obviously you get six turnovers that's a great effort by the defense and you know you can score 51 points and you know you and thankfully it is Temple right so you have this game to sort of figure out okay what do we need to do a little bit better um against next week against Houston because that's another game you would expect to win pretty handily but you know that's a different that's a upgrade from what T is and we know that um so that's gonna be interesting to see what it's gonna be interesting to see and I I haven't seen um I haven't watched any of the post game press conferences yet I don't know if you have but I'm interested to see kind of like what the messaging is um after this game and during the week just to about like how to you know get the offense going a little bit more even though like like we said in the beginning like nothing you can really complain about like after after a 51 to3 effort like it's really good for both the offense and the defense you really can't complain uh for sure and I will say this Maxwell to the uninitiated in Oklahoma football there's always something to complain about and they will find a way to nitpick you know I I haven't heard a lot of um you know the pressors or anything like we we packed up the tailgate and headed out and I I just just uh hopped on the computer here after that drive um but just listening to fans and they're always unreasonable with ou I and anyone in the comments saying that we're not get over yourself you know we are we you know we are I'm one of you come on uh people like complain about the lack of like uh downfield throwing the lack of this that it was a very very vanilla offense I was frustrated at times but um um I think the messing is we won by we won 51 to three we covered the 43 point spread you know U fans shouldn't be upset uh they'll find a way to be uh because the anxieties are high but you know that's just it's OE football for you real quick before we wrap this up Temple if you're a temple fan watching this I don't know why you would be but there were a couple there are a couple Temple fans at the game that traveled to Norman and I felt so bad for yeah I mean good good on you for travel and and sorry what you about what you had to watch but I think if you're the takea away from Temple perspective is like man you got to figure out the quarterback situation because it did not look good out there I think they did they did some things like they look like they have some some um you know good skill players I think you have to be encouraged a little bit by um what you were able to do on defense especially on third down like you know you're able to stop a team Oklahoma on third down and um you know the way you did tonight and so you you got some hope for what maybe what you can do defensively and you know they some of their um receivers and um made plays and you know you look you know as good as you can considering the circumstances but I think the biggest question for them moving forward is like quarterback because that didn't that was not a a good outing uh for from forest Brock who has a very like strong quarterback name like that's a that's a that's a that's too good of a name to be to put up 1225 uh two picks and 128 yards even against Oklahoma so gotta figure that part out if you're if you're the alls Max I I I I can't verify this because this was just a stat that was told to me at the tailgate but uh I believe Temple had negative -2 passing yards at halftime I I that was the stat that someone threw out to me and I I cannot verify it but it sounds about right given the state of that Temple Al's offense uh and I mean just looking just looking at the rushing Yarns just looking at everything about Temple there was not much going for him um and you know the AL like they're in a really tough spot they had a lot of uh issues with the portal um and I mean the program's gone really downhill since uh Matt rule left uh several years ago it's it when when this game was scheduled this was supposed to be a very very different Temple team I mean you remember that uh that game where they were like both them and Notre Dame were ranked like it was a big deal that feels like a billion years ago it was only like what six some odd years ago so um I don't know Temple got to do a lot of soul soul searching here uh to get this program in the right uh going back in the right direction um but not not a solid performance on defense uh some of that might be 's conservativeness but um I don't know this is definitely one you um got to got to review the tape and try to be better next time all
