Michigan vs. Fresno State Game Recap - College Football Week 1

the reigning National Champs uh with no asri I'm not GNA do that I'm gonna put my Michigan State uh bias aside here uh but the reigning National Champs get a win in their first game in the Chiron Moore era in the Davis Warren era they have a 30-10 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs in a game that you know despite you know depending on who you ask they might say it was closer than it was but I feel pretty good saying like this game the 30 to1 score line I don't think really shows how kind of close this game was now obviously Michigan was able to like eventually be like oh we're Michigan we're better than Fresno State and they had Playmakers and NFL level guys on the defensive side of the ball making plays while Fresno State had Fresno State guys on the other side of of the line but there was some really good moments in this game from Michigan on the defensive side of the ball this game was obviously a little bit closer than folks probably would have wanted even given the 30 to1 score line the a lot to talk about in this game with Shon Mo's first game with Davis Warren coming out and being the quarterback of the Michigan Wolverines uh let's let's get started with the quarterback conversation because obviously Michigan coming off despite I mean depending on who you ask like besides Tom Brady people probably would come out here and say like JJ McCarthy's probably the next greatest Michigan quarterback of all time in recent memory uh what where were you at with Michigan's quarterback situation because it's been a huge discussion this offseason obviously coming off of fall Camp uh the conversation was that all five quarterbacks on the roster are going to get a shot based on seniority which was crazy at the time and it's still very crazy uh where were you at with the quarterback decision and Davis warden's play in this game so this is I'll be the first like this what what makes someone special is owning up when you have a bad take so I'm willing to own up and say this is a bad take if a quarterback doesn't start before his senior year I don't want him as my quarterback that's my thought process that's just how you feel about it like why wasn't he able to start before that yeah what happened the first three years with the especially with the transfer portal because why didn't he Le if he's so good I I get he sat behind JJ like he definitely wasn't as good as JJ but if he's that good why didn't he go somewhere else yeah I mean it's a fair point and look some of the stuff I'm going to say here is very like just cut and dry like I'm not going to dive deep into it and here were the kind of the main takeaways that I had written down after this game um about the quarterback situation one how is a reigning National Champion are these your quarterback options like with all due respect like because the one thing about Davis Warren is like I don't think you can deny like his story is like pretty cool like he had the health issues in high school he was able to overcome that he walks on at Michigan earns a scholarship there becomes the number two quarterback um at Michigan and then obviously gets to take over this year as a starter like story-wise I don't think you can deny it's a cool story I think people get behind that with that said you are the reigning national champions you're coming off back-to-back college football playoff appearances like obviously they weren't able to get it done the year before that but like in the last two seasons you have been one of the final four best four teams in the country and I think you could get any quarterback that like there was plenty of quarterbacks to choose from in the transfer portal and your options end up being Davis Warren and Alex orgy and obviously they got a fivestar and Jen DAV but who knows if he's going to even get in this season uh but like I I just don't know how you're put in the situation where these are your quarterback options am I am I wrong for thinking that Deon no you're completely right and Davis Warren's story is super cool if he went to Illinois like you know what I mean like like it's a super cool story and like I wish him nothing but success you know what I mean but like you're Michigan a former walk-on shouldn't be your starting quarterback more specifically when you have a five star on the roster like I feel like that's like kind of like where I'm I'm a little lost you know what I mean like Davis Warren again like if he went to Illinois that's a phenomenal story you say it on college game day before they play like Michigan or Ohio State and then you kind of don't really watch him play again you know what I mean but like yeah it's not as cool of a story when you're on the reigning National Champion right and and you know what in this game like even outside I guess this will tie into where I'm going to go next here but I do want to get this last point about the quarterback obviously jayen Davis is a festar true freshman um I think the ability is there obviously I can see why maybe they'll have some some reserves about throwing him out there and like letting them play uh I don't know if I'd have those reserves after watching the other quarterbacks go at it but here's where I'm at in the in the discussion of the quarterbacks on this team even if Alex orgy isn't the option at quarterback obviously given maybe what he has passing liability wise to me this goes to like honestly I'm I'm going to relate this to Michigan State and I and this this is my first time saying this and it might not work out here uh but here's where I'm coming from at on it last season Michigan State's basketball center rotation the options were slim right and I was out there like put Xavier Booker at Center da da da do this do that and they're like what he can't defend he can't rebound he can't do all I'm like well all the other centers can't do that either but Xavier Booker can do one thing well he can shoot better them he can be better offensively that's where I'm at with orgy like I feel like even his I guess limitations passing wise having the threat of him running having the threat of him being out there makes it worth it to be out there when Davis Warren is not just some passing afficionado like he's not like he he's not just some guy who's gonna come out there and light it up passing wise you're like oh I got to go with that guy his passing ability gives us chances to win that's not the case in this right I mean that's kind of why I don't understand why why Jaden Davis isn't playing like or am I saying his name yeah jayen Davis yeah yeah uh 15 and 25 118 one touchdown one pit I mean come on man like it's not like you say if you say Alex orgy has like he has passing deficiencies well so does Davis Warren you know what I mean and at least the other one can run and Al I get the hesitation with playing a true freshman but I mean watched Dylan rayola play yesterday I watched Nico I'm not going to say your last name at Tennessee play yesterday like I I don't know if I buy that like true freshman I mean even arch in you know a quarter and a half like I don't buy that these younger quarterbacks can't play better than some of the older guys right and I I I agree with you on that case and when I was looking at this the one thing I did take a step back and I was like oh maybe why aren't they playing him why aren't they playing him um you know why aren't they the younger guy why they're playing Jay Davis I I got a reason for you it's because there's no weapons on this team like the who is he throwing to Coulson Loveland is incredible that dude is a dog that guy might be the one offensive weapon that this Michigan offense has right like obviously you know Donovan Edwards was on the cover of NCA football like people were expecting him to have a good season he was second on carries on this game he was out carried by khil mullings who I believe was a former a former linebacker maybe like a I don't even know if he was a running back but uh he was out carried out gained by him in this game Donovan Edwards only rushed for 27 yards on 11 attempts while c m was actually pretty successful 15 carries 92 yards uh but what the thing that for me and I go back to this the reigning National champ kind of conversation how is your wide receiver core what it is because outside of Co lelin this is this is what you got Tyler Morris three catches 15 yards Kendrick Bell one catch 11 yards samj Morgan two catches for eight yards Donovan Edwards two catches zero yards like how does that end up being your attack in the situation um and how do you how do you constitute throwing a freshman quarterback out there with no weapons and maybe that's kind of what they're thinking about but also like why don't you have weapons yeah I think the bigger question is why don't they have weapons because if you're Jadon Davis right like you're not there to uh I mean with all due respect right like JJ McCarthy won a national title and went first round but if we're being completely honest the goal is going first round if the national title comes along with that for a five-star quarterback that's great but a Five Star Quarterback didn't pull up to Michigan without like oh I want to play on Sunday and um like I guess my question is if they don't have the weapons now and he's a true freshman and he's trying to be out of there you know in three years are they going to have them anytime soon like like where are they coming from yeah I don't know if it's going to be from the portal or like they're just going out there and getting five star freshman like to come play wide receiver but I don't know like you got to be you got to surround with more weapons and obviously cson leveling himself at the tight end position that dude's just that dude's nasty like he's he's an NFL tight end maybe could make a conversation he's maybe the first tight end taken uh in the in the NFL draft he's he's incredible but like you watch this game if I'm another team watching this game I'm like all right let's let's put two on Colson Loveland and God forbid Tyler Morris and Kendrick Bell beat us like let's see it or David like Davis Warren that's throw to somebody else like let them beat us I just I I come away from this game and I'm just like man like and I get like there's change over hard ball left and all this is all this is like there's going to be change involved with this but God damn this it in even in the first game it just looks completely different the offensive line is just not as good there wasn't the greatest protection outside of mullings obviously they weren't really able to run the ball like you want to have Donovan Edwards being able to hold his own and have a really good year rushing he did not um where I know it's one game but as far as Michigan offensively scale of one to 10 where are you putting the Panic meter uh do we think Conor stallions is gonna be back on Sidelines this year he was in the stands I saw a picture he he was watching the game after after Mumford took a Mumford High School in Detroit took a 47 to6 loss if he can if he can put a mustache on and go back on some of the central Michigan Sidelines I don't have a panic in the world but because he can't I think they're in a lot of trouble also like the Donovan Edwards thing last year 109 carries 382 yards for three and a half yards per you know what I mean he's on the cover of NCAA football um he had a very very good sophomore year but like are we like I still think we're up in the air on if that if he can handle being rb1 um and I mean quite frankly bro like Conor stallion ain't walking through that door and I do think whe whether Michigan fans want to say it or not like I do think that plays A Part yeah and it's just it's I mean and even to give Donovan Edwards a little bit of Grace or a breaker like this they lost their whole offens of line and they're replacing it with guys that like just maybe frankly aren't as good at the offensive line position and one of the things last year that Michigan fans I I don't even think gave enough credit to they had a starting line that had played together they also had a bunch of 23 and 24 year olds playing on the offensive line like and they had Blake corm at running back and JJ McCarthy at quarterback and they had Ronnie Bell and Roman Wilson and still Colston Loveland they just had like all these weapons and like this is just this just is not that offensive team um it really is it really isn't I I will say this like in college football unless you're Georgia or Alabama right like you kind of you kind of build up for years to get that one shot right and that was last year for Michigan they slowly built up that was their year you capitalize on it and everybody goes to the NFL and then you unfortunately you have to take a step back and you kind of rebuild it back up so I mean it's it's clearly going to be a tough year for them I don't know how anyone can deny that like they are not going to the playoff yeah the the one thing and now this is more of the positive switch of this uh the one thing that Michigan does have going for him is that defense is not yeah like the the you're not able to run the ball against this team because Mason Graham and Grant are just they they basically shut down that offensive line uh they have really good pass rushing like Specialists I think I would I I would uh put them at they have some Playmakers on the secondary uh mcari pagee looked really good yesterday obviously will Johnson is going to be one of the top corners taken in the NFL draft they have three certified Bonafide first round draft picks maybe like three guy three guys that are taking in the first like 20 picks in the draft um and their defense kind of kept them in this game now you know in a game that things aren't going right you're gonna give up some yards like you look at the receivers on Fresno State Jaylen Moss had six catches 97 yards uh mag Delena had six catches for 67 yards Mikey Keane also threw 36 times like they were dropping back and like they're an air raid team they're going to try to throw the ball and you know some of the defensive deficiencies came where Michigan's staff was doing this thing where they're like rotating their best cornerback out of the game and I'm just like like what's going on there but what did you see from this Michigan defense uh and what I would call pretty dominant performance oh no this this defense is up there like when we start talking about the best defenses in the country it's very up there like my only fear is like like I said you kind of build a roster build a roster to get to that Peak moment this defense is peing when the offense is going down you know what I mean and it's like how do you find that middle ground to where they're both peing at the same time right and uh you know they had the playmaker they were able to get the interceptions in this game Mikey Keane threw two interceptions will Johnson returned one of those interceptions for an 86 yard pick six that like Mikey Keane just threw a screen pass that will Johnson saw com in two plays in advance and he just like steep right in front of like okay thank you I'm going go ahead and score this for 86 yards uh there was a pick early in the game that was kind of a drop by Fresno State receiver but they were able to turn the ball over uh obviously with how great Michigan's defense is here's my biggest concern I think and it's not just the offense kind of being lack aasal I guess is the word it's that like sometimes in the football Dynamic there's a there's issues where like the defense starts looking at the offense like all right come on yeah like I've been on the FI you y'all got me on the field I'm getting these interceptions I'm making plays and you're rewarding me with like nothing like I'm right I'm going three and out I'm right back on the field uh do you think that could be a case because I you know I'm not going to come on here and been like I played high level football or something like that but like I definitely have heard cases or even see like NFL teams or any level where like sometimes the defense starts looking at the offense and will Johnson is gonna be like damn like I'm making all these plays over here and like you know Davis Warren throwing Ducks into the stands like do you think that could be an issue moving forward or what does Michigan have to do I guess what what's the answer offensively run the ball just run it just like 34 attempts isn't enough no like you you got to take the like bro remember when JJ didn't throw a pass in the second half like we got to get back to that and and and the difference is JJ could have thrown if they needed him to not this time like you just need to not throw the ball because you don't need to throw the ball and I think that's honestly honestly that's any sport man like you know Haven played basketball if you have a good like five minute stretch and you're like yo I need to sit on the wing for a second here and you just watch your team turn it over you're like damn bro I don't want to run back on defense honestly it's a lot I mean it's a toxic trade in sports but like there is definitely some portion of that that goes on and like you know especially with like a lot of these these guys coming back from like hard ball team like man we have to deal with this one coach hard ball is a coach like we didn't have to do all this when he was at the helm and now you you know what I'm saying like there's it obviously you're one to know things things are going good but I would just be cautious like at the first sight of adversity like do guys start turning on each other do guys start looking at each other um I I you know obviously that's something to watch out for but I do agree with you Michigan's going to have to be an incredible rushing team the only thing is like I don't know if the offensive line is good enough like for the rushing attack to be that great because they definitely are going to be going up against better defensive scenarios defensive lines and defenses in general than the Fresno a bulldog so if I had to ask you to make a prediction right now um do you think Michigan's offense gets it together and I mean and I'm not even saying like be like a a dynamic or do they do enough to do they do enough to make themselves uh a a contender for the college football playoff no no it's not all their fault like I don't know the Big 10 is like when I look at these big 10 schedules it's like how do you get through this Gauntlet bro like how how do you not have two or three losses they could beat everybody they're supposed to beat and I still think they lose to to Oregon and Ohio State you know what I mean and it's like if you lose to those two teams and you got to play UFC who you who might like we'll find out later like how good they are like you might have three losses while being a very good team and then it's not even your fault you miss the playoff you know what I mean you're just in a tough conference but I also kind of think I mean you mentioned the adversity aspect people turning on each other every defensive player we named is either a senior or a junior we know is going to the draft how many of those guys are gonna if they go on a two or three game losing streak will Johnson's looking at the defensive coordinate like hey bro I'm a top 10 pick dog yeah I'm not I'm not about to be out here doing this I'm going to shut it down and honestly probably probably a good decision for him to be honest with you don't don't cost yourself a couple I grinding it out when you don't have to um this is going to be clipped and I'm okay with it but I'm going to say it right now my biggest biggest biggest takeaway of this game is congrats to Ryan day in Ohio State you're gonna do it like you you are going to beat Michigan this year and if they don't I know this is g to come back up but like that I got to the end of this game and I was like yeah Ohio State's gonna beat Michigan this year and if they play their cars right they might be beating Michigan for the next couple years unless Michigan changes some things they're GNA dog walk Michigan this year yeah it's get it's gonna be bad it's it's gonna be
