Michigan State vs. FAU Game Recap - College Football Week 1

the Jonathan Smith era the Aiden Charles era the big bad horny man himself Mel Tucker has left my program and we have embarked on a New Journey here and that Journey accumulated in a 16-10 barn burner Victory uh over Florida Atlantic I do want to point this out I said Victory okay uh my football team the Michigan State Spartans are one and 0 that's the most important thing out of this if we would have lost game there would not have been a recap straight up um there almost wasn't a recap for this game even in the 1610 I'm joking only we will have previews and Recaps from Michigan State football all year long I'm here with my good friend Dion Hil Dion um obviously you were tapped into this game uh as an honorary Spartan whether you want to be or not I have I have thrusted that upon you and you have to accept that what what what are your if I had to ask one sentence about this game to describe it where would you go with that uh I don't even need a sentence I just a word underwhelming it was it was very under it was very underwhelming um I I think the underwhelming part about it came with like there's so much excitement when you're able to kind of move on from like these quote unquote Dreadful times like for all the moments that Mel Tucker had when like he got us that win over Michigan at the crib and he got kenth w Walker into the fold and Jaden Reed and Keon Coleman and all these guys are incredible and everything was fun and then everything came crashing down and it was hell on Earth on the field off the field um and you you find yourself at a point where like all right fresh start here we go let's see what this era is about and you left it like you said underwhelming uh what what do you think was the main underwhelming point of this game or what what was I guess what was what made this game tough for Michigan State in the game they were favored by 14 points uh Aiden child like I I like to be honest with you I I came on this channel very high on Aiden child like you know any time I've had a conversation about Michigan State very high on him very high on Jonathan Smith like I kind of thought that was the doo like worst case scenario you're going to score 40 behind those two and that did not happen wasn't even close to happening so I think you know it was just it was underwhelming like and they kind of the two of them also like they don't not talk you know what I mean like they you know they might not be like shadur Sanders Dion Sanders Travis Hunter level of talk but like you know they definitely like let it be known like we're here but they were not they were not here they were not no you can't have it both ways you can't and and look just keep you know things clear and in perspective here I'm an Aiden child's fan I'm an Aiden child's believer too like I obviously he played I mean let's let's not mince words here he played awful in this game he and and he said himself after the game that he played awful and he knows he's better than that um which you know I'm not going to touch on it too much I do like to see that from him I also don't like playing like this whole like oh this leadership was so incredible card when he went 10 for 24 with two interceptions and was the reason that Florida Atlantic was in the game they were in the game because Aiden Childs played bad and I think he knows that and I'm glad he acknowledged that I'm still glad that he's my team's quarterback I think this is going to be his worst game he's gonna be he's gonna be good moving forward right now with that said there were some things in this game where you're looking like you know man I found myself he threw that comeback around I was like dog Aiden child has a rocket arm and then he's and then he threw these fade routes I'm like dog relax with the rocket arm like he needs to be able to put a little bit of touch on theall maybe he talked that up to being like Oh you know maybe a little bit like hyped up in his first game first start uh but you know I thought maybe he would settle in in the second half um and he kind of was doing the same thing there's a lot of off throws in this game obviously we said he was 10 for 24 only threw for 114 yards two interceptions no passing touchdowns in this game did have one rushing um what do you think Aiden child's biggest issue was in this game I I I think it's just he's he's 18 years old right like he's very young yeah like I think it's just that like he just he just looked young he looked like he had you know he had 35 attempts at Oregon State last year like that showed you know what I mean like but unfortunately as we saw you know both positively and negatively with Mel Tucker at Michigan State you don't get a lot of time right like Mel Tucker got a 10-year extension like eight weeks in he got fired very shortly after right like you don't on both ends of the spectrum you don't get a lot of time at Michigan s to kind of figure it out and speaking of that next week they got a Maryland team that looked very good and then we kind of discussed this off camera um in October you go Ohio State Oregon Iowa Michigan and like my question for you cart like you you're the voice of the Spartan Community when you look at this schedule and you look at the way child played on Saturday is this a bow Team no no no no no they're not and and and that's based off what I saw in week one um obviously even coming into the season I knew it was going to be a t like an uphill battle for Michigan State just given that stretch of game I don't even want to speak about that stretch of games but that stretch of games where it's like four weeks with one bye mixed in where we're just in murderer Row the Big 10 uh I knew that was going to be tough uh but now we're at a point where you know you're not even Overlook we saw Maryland was able to dog walk a Yukon team like 50 to7 like Maryland's got some Talent on that team we're going to Maryland uh that's you know it I came into the season I was like in this like first four game stretch we need to find a way to at minimum go like two and two on on the in best case scenario three and one right I I don't feel as good about that after this first game um but hopefully you know I I think Aiden Charles is going to be a better you know a better quarterback moving forward um now now I do want to touch on some more positive things in this case I I did I thought that you know the transfer running back KRON Lynch Adams was incredible in this game nine rushy attempts 101 yards one touchdown he looked he looked a lot better than Nate Carter did Nate Carter was only able to manage 48 yards on 19 carries I I see those carries maybe being a little bit more split moving forward maybe you know the thing is Jonathan Smith made a comment about kind of riding the hot hand uh he didn't ride the hot hand in this game uh so so so I hope he does that moving forward what did you see from this this Michigan State rushing attack in this game like the offensive line is pretty good I would say like R Rush game wise you know I mean definitely better than last season I'll tell you that I know it's a low bar but they they were better than last season but I thought Kon was uh decisive you know what I mean one cut we're up the field north south right U very electric you didn't really see that from Nick Carter like when I was watching the game I was kind of like all right you got this 18year old quarterback you're making him drop back 24 times you're making him do Aiden Charles himself was electric with his legs a little bit and he didn't really get the opportunity to showcase that um I don't think Jonathan Smith put this team in the best position to succeed on Saturday and I think I think they got away with one yeah we're we're we're gonna touch on some coaching decisions once I once I speak a little bit more about the actual players themselves but let the my the best part about me for KRON lycha Adams and I mean this in the most endearing way possible when he runs he runs like a psycho like like I think he's got a screw loose and I think that makes him a better football player like he just like even when he had like the short runs he's just getting up he's screaming throwing the ball I'm like dog you just rushed for four yards I'm like this dude might just love football and I kind of just I love that out of my running back it was good to see um Michigan State's defense on the flip side of this they were able to have a pretty good game the penalties were killing them in this game whether and I know there's a lot of conversation about Cam faner and those late slides which by the way they need to fix that because one cam Venter is gonna one kill himself by getting hurt with these L slides or two other teams just can't tackle him because he's going to be just just so aggressive in this matter uh but you know the besides the penalties Michigan State's defense was able to keep faner at Bay they were able to be pretty good against the rush even though there was a lot of like cam faner getting loose and kind of making things happen but all in all I thought that you know the defense was really good I thought the secondary was good they're able to get two picks in this game uh though it was kind of a bad FAU offensive performance and cam fer is not necessarily a world beater did you see anything from this Michigan State Defense that gives you you know a good feeling I mean I think you know only giving up 10 points is obviously really good right but um when I look at it like you would have expected maybe fa to get 10 points but Michigan State to have 40 or 50 this Michigan team didn't move the ball well like when you look at um time of possession was almost split 50/50 those are two areas that you would expect Michigan State to dominate in um and they didn't so this defense had to play a little tired maybe you know they had to play with some shorter fields and they still didn't get points up so if there's one takeaway from this game this defense might be pretty good yeah yeah they had like I said they had Playmakers they had guys you know getting after the quarterback the penalties were just absolutely killing them in this game and also I don't know if Michigan state is necessarily putting their best linebacker core out there but that might be something that changes during the season but I I do think that you know obviously with the new defensive coordinator coming over from Minnesota and Rossi I thought that his game plan and execution was pretty good at that level now it's time to shift to our good friend John Jonathan Smith right uh I'm a Jonathan Smith fan I I do think that he is going to be able to get Michigan State football back to where we want to be with that that set I had nasty flashbacks of coaching decisions that cost teams games why in God's green earth in Spartan's Green Earth was I stressing on the last Drive of FAU when you could have just kicked a field goal with a kicker by the way who I just want to make it known is one of the better kickers in the country all right we actually do have a really good kicker Jonathan Kim last year was one of the better kickers in the country has deep range and we are going for it instead of going up two scores Dion I know I'm biased and I know sometimes I don't see things clearly that's a flaw of mine please tell me why there wasn't a field goal kick in that situation I have no idea I I don't really know like like I can't I got trashed by Michigan State fans because I said Jonathan Smith might go to Georgia one day that's how high on Jonathan Smith I I was like he might go to Georgia or Alabama and everyone killed me but like I think this coach is I think he's really good but like what was he doing like why didn't he kick you say put the game away if you give the ball to KRON the game goes away in the first quarter right yeah like you're not even in the position to where you have to go for it that that dude was killing the whole game and he only got nine touches yeah it didn't it didn't make much sense and you know I I hate to give Oregon State fans credit but they were trying to tell us early in the off season like hey y'all are getting all hype about having lingren as your uh as your offensive coordinator just wait just wait and I was like ah this is what you're talking about okay this is this is fun better than Jay Johnson but oh man this is this is going to be fun but all in all you know uh actually before we get to wrapping this up does this change your outlook on Michigan State's season as a whole or is kind of everything in front of them and this was just like a a bad performance that you were able to still find a win it it doesn't change my Outlook on Michigan State the program I think I would I think I jumped the gun though I think I was a little too quick a little too early to Crown Smith and Charles um like I thought they were going to ease their way to a bowl game I I now I don't even see them getting there so I think it it was more so me I think I was wrong more so than their Outlook just changing right and I and everything's in front of them I'll say that I the one thing that does give me a pretty good feeling is that even with a child's like having this accuracy problem decision making problems as well that that pick at the when we were at the seven yard line that's an inexcusable throw you cannot throw that pass right there you cannot throw late to the outside on the seven yard line also once again maybe give a couple ke carries to Lynch Adams down there since no one can stop him instead of throwing an out route at the seven yard line with a quarterback who has struggled all game and threw it right to the other team uh that was an inexcusable error um but with that said 18y old quarterback I think he's going to have these moments I just hope that with these moments we also get the moments where it's like wow look at that like you know look at the arm talent look at what he can do look at how he can run this offense and you know I hope that does come because I think that Michigan state in order to beat good teams ACH is going to have to play well that's that's that's kind of what the see we can dive into like what you know the nuances are the play calling whatever it is if Aiden Charles is a dynamic enough quarterback he will at least get Michigan State to like a bowl game or where we want to go despite what other people are doing and I believe he will do that uh with that said I've never felt a win that felt more like a loss than Friday night I was in shambles Dion absolute shambles I don't want to have that feeling again and now I got a week to stress about playing Maryland God do you think was it worse because it was on Friday because I feel like that to me was kind of like the the icing on the cake like new coach Friday night game all eyes are on y'all and this is what happens right and then I just gotta get belittled by all my peers and everyone around me but hey like I said check the schedule there's a w on there he's one and0 Aiden Charles is gonna be better even if he's not better he might be a generational leader which I don't know if that gets you wins but I think he but he but he is a generational we can always have that that that uh that flag in our cap but we'll
