Michigan vs. Texas Game Recap - College Football Week 2

wow that was kind of what I think we expected but I don't think Michigan fans expected that 31 to2 and I don't think that final score was indicative of how dominant and one-sided this performance was from the Texas long horns they look every part of a national championship Contender right now Michigan looks every part of a rebuilding team I'm Greg wadell Bobby Howard's here to help me break this down uh Bobby seven nothing at the end of the first and I think the signs were there that this could get ugly but you know it's still a one possession game you're not sure where it's headed early on in this game could you tell that this was GNA turn into what it turned into well to me it was one of those things where it's like well Michigan's offense needs needs to show a pulse you need something out of Davis Warren need something out of Donovan Edwards and they just never showed up um because it was clear that Texas's offense was just completely rolling um the strength of this Michigan team is the defense uh and they looked completely hapless in that first half um quers and that Texas offense I mean y that from from the jump we're driving uh even though the Longhorns weren't able to convert on that field goal from Burt Auburn um it just it it looked like it was going to be Texas's day yeah yeah I think um the first drive was really important that's why I wanted to start with like our initial Impressions because you know I I think any reasonable Michigan fan I think would have come into this game saying they knew they had a disadvantage offensively given what they watched in week one and there was a lot of turnover and just unproven pieces on the offensive line and at quarterback and frankly the skill positions everywhere it's new and and just not as talented as it was a year ago that's not necessarily true on defense I mean this is supposed to be the best defense in the country or one of them and I I don't think Michigan's defense failed them but I did think the first Drive of this game was really critical to where this was headed because Texas converted I think three third Downs I mean they sustained a drive with Quin stepping up in the pocket and making plays to extend that drive now they end up missing a field goal but you're looking up it's z00 at the end of the first or not the end of the first the end of the first drive it's halfway through the first quarter and I think in that moment Michigan fans were probably looking at each other like okay we got to stop this is good but at the same time you're also like well we can't really play the the field management just quiet game if Texas is going to be able to control the ball like that Michigan very quickly went three and out Texas came down their second drive six plays 56 yards there were just the feeling I got this watching I wasn't in the stadium but watching it through my television it just felt like things were on the verge very early of getting ugly and I think ultimately it played out that way I was so impressed with Quinn ERS um and and I think it would be a disservice to what actually happened and the the realities of these rosters to make this a quarterback conversation because obviously Quinn yers is one of the best quarterbacks in the sport obviously Davis Warren is not this game was about a lot more than the quarterbacks but I did find myself wondering what would happen if we just traded quarterbacks for each other here because Quinn was so good I think he would give damn near any team with a decent defense a chance to win every single game that they're in this year he did this at Alabama on the road last year like you are well familiar with watching Quin but but I feel like I've seen a maturation from him from last year to what we saw in this game right no no doubt I mean he had absolute command of this offense it was sharp it was you know zero like zero pressure you know obviously Ann Arbor is one of the best environments in in the sport but he looked like he was playing in practice you know that that uh Stadium atmosphere was you know it was popping but him nothing and I think that's that's one of the biggest advantages you can have in college football as a quarterback who just is super cool under pressure and uh was able to utilize all of his uh receiving assets very very well um he was excellent he was really really good yeah he's got the edge to him too like I I I don't know if I missed this in his career up until now but I feel like we saw just an an extra exaggerated leadership cocky Confidence from him when they got a couple scores up on the sideline in this one and I kind of like that man I'm not going to lie I'm I'm looking at this like this team could go really far um Texas offensively the the running back injuries are what they are I think um against worse defenses they'll be fine with their run game in this game this really came down to Quinn and his receivers he had a lot of guys looking maybe better than they are in this game to me or maybe maybe the receiving threats are underrated at this point and we need to start giving them more credit cuz Gunner Helm was phenomenal seven receptions 98 yards and a touchdown Matthew golden jayon blue both had touchdowns Isaiah Bond's a name you're going to hear a lot from 51 yards in this game but I I came away from this game feeling like you know in the post Xavier worthy Texas era they're going to be fine with the skill position stuff around Quinn do you think those guys are underrated what's your read on that room yeah it's really interesting because it's it's less of a star I mean there are stars but there's nobody on the level of worthy or you know Adonai Mitchell you know in that room but he balances it out so well you know nobody has you know jaw-dropping eye popping numbers which is crazy when you look at a 3112 you know Rob um but he's so good at just balancing it out finding guys where they're open and it's really just a very hard puzzle to solve for that Texas offense uh gunar Helm very much not a big name that anyone talks about uh yeah you know the long hords lost a stud in jatavian Sanders last year so Helm is just kind of like he he him having 98 G 98 yards is is pretty shocking but it's just that offense is just really tricky to figure out and credit to Steve sarkeesian for getting his Guys open and uh good spots yeah and the burnt orange Shades Sark was uh looking the part in this one and obviously Matthew mccan in the house there was a whole lot of good vibes for Texas in the big house in this one um I I want to ask you one more Texas question then we'll flip to the Michigan side of things quickly but uh you are an Oklahoma fan for those that don't know and uh I think you've done a great job breaking down your rival without showing too much hate here but uh this was my preseason National Championship Bobby I I I am picking this team to win it all I stand by it I feel better about it after this one they obviously made the playoff last year they were close but um what do you think Texas's chances are at this point because we saw a team like Alabama similar spot ranked in the top five they struggle with South Florida we we saw Ohio State look really really good yesterday but I don't know there's still some questions with teams like Oregon even Georgia hasn't necessarily looked the way I thought they would do you think it's crazy to consider Texas at the very top of this list as maybe the team to beat I don't think it's crazy um I still don't have him at the top of the top you know I feel like their two best wins um in the Quinn ERS era have come against kind of fading dynasties you know Alabama even though they made the playoff didn't look like that traditional Alabama team and this Michigan team is clearly not the one that we've seen over the past couple Seasons um so I think they've gotten the right teams and the right moments let's see what happens when they play a Georgia let's see what happens when they play some of those tougher teams on their schedule um and it's it's a very accessible schedule like Texas should make the college football playoff um I would be shocked it would take a couple big upsets uh something we've seen Texas definitely do in the past um but the way that SEC schedule specifically shakes out for them they can afford a couple losses like they can lose to Georgia and Oklahoma so make the playoff they just gotta take care of business from here on out yep yeah yeah they're in a good spot shout out to the schedule makers at uh for Texas football maybe they're the real MVP right now all right to the Michigan side of things quickly um let's start with the quarterback spot Davis Warren the numbers end up looking I think better than the performance did as crazy as that sounds he finishes 22 for 33 204 yards the big issue is two interceptions and a touchdown I tweeted out Midway through the second half I think he's gonna get someone killed and I obviously that's a little bit of an exaggeration but man they're kind of throwing this kid to the wolves and look his story is great but this offensive line has nothing nothing here like they they lost everybody and the guys they're bringing in do not look the part right now uh he he doesn't have weapons at receiver I know Coulson loveland's good but he had a game-changing negative play in this one and the wide outs are are non-existent other than samage Morgan and even samage Morgan I think is not nearly as as ready as people want him to be here so I I don't know what the answer is I mean I don't think there's a quarterback in that locker room that's going to magically snap their fingers and change things but from what I've seen from Davis Warren they're asking him to kind of make a lot of plays under pressure and I think they want a lot of checkdowns but that inherently leads to Third and Longs and then on Third and long man this guy is just throwing his receivers into death traps repeatedly I I genuinely think they're somewhat lucky there wasn't a serious injury with the way he was leading these receivers into Texas secondary big hits uh what can they do at quarterback I mean what was your read of Davis Warren after this game um my read of Davis Warren is that they should have hit the portal uh honestly uh with all due respect um it Michigan just they're Sealing is completely capped here uh given the quarterbacks aren't everything but to me if you don't have someone who can lead the offense against tough defenses like you know you're in the Big 10 Texas's defense is solid don't get me wrong you're G to run into some tough tough defenses I I mean I I I don't think I think he's a huge liability um for Michigan but they don't have any other options I I did not like what I saw out of Alex orgy um yeah no this is a this is for me just being frank Michigan fans this is a Sim to end of season uh situation I think I you just don't have a quarterback I'm sorry it's just not I don't think you can go that far um with Davis Warren I I was not impressed no I think coming into the season there was like well if we just have a game manager at quarterback like even if org's not the guy maybe the defense is good enough you sneak into the 12 team playoffs somehow but that's that's not happening like this for for lack of a better way to describe it it feels like you're watching a poor man's version of Iowa because at least with Iowa you have the elite defense but you also have a running game you know you can just grind out four yards of carry on I don't think we know Michigan can do that like I really don't I think Donovan Edwards was better than mullings in this game but he he does not look like the cover athlete we expected um and I I do think it comes back to the line more than anything for me clearly this offensive line is in over their heads and it's going to make it harder on the the guys behind them and if Warren or Edwards were ready to be Superstars maybe they could freelance their way through it but they're not they need some help and they're not going to get help from their line at least not early in the season but I don't know man I I think the best path to me would genuinely be to try Alex orgy not for any quarterback related things but just lean into a run heavy system run some read option maybe it seems like they're completely out on that and my read on orgy I thought his confidence was clearly sapped after after week one I mean this is a guy who in the offseason thought he was going to be the starting quarterback was praised for his leadership and then the last week before the season it's ah uh oh we think it's Davis Warren and if that were me and I'm not saying he deserves it but if that were me I would be cooked too I would just be like yeah they don't think I'm good enough so here we go um and he's not good enough and neither is Davis Warren but it's just a sad State of Affairs for for Michigan here uh the receiver threats though to me Holston leveland he eight receptions 70 yards I think he may be the best tight end in football he also had a huge negative play though in this game I mean this was still a two-score game shortly before the first half and then coulston leveland just fumbles completely unforced he he was running after the catch and drops the ball it's a seven-point swing maybe more because Michigan could have gone down and kicked three but Texas gets another seven before the half um I I think the the point for me with that is that Michigan has such few reliable options offensively the ones they do have can't make those mistakes like you cannot have Colston Loveland of all people swing a game in the negative for you and win the football game it's not going to happen this year even against lesser opponents and that was kind of poting it for me when that happened it's like well if their Stars aren't even gonna star there's nowhere to go from here right it's just that's that's just unfortunate you know um because that that was kind of Michigan's plan is you you just kind of move the ball down the field you know keep keep your offense on the field Be steady and hope for a big play from one of your stars and and just mediocrity across the board um also kind of funny note here both tight ends led the LED uh Texas and Michigan in receiving so yeah kind of funny there very interesting uh Chiron Moore I mean this is the first I want to say the first big task because he won games as the head coach last year without Jim Harbaugh but of his own program this was a first big test and he failed with flying colors if you can do that um if you're a Michigan fan are you willing to give chirome more time or or I mean it's his to meet to me it's his fault they didn't get a transfer quarterback like who else are we going to point fingers at here for the roster building so I guess if you're a Michigan fan are you willing to give him like a six in six year here or are you demanding more than that I I think he'd give him time I think he's earned that at least um and to be fair you know quarterback wise yeah you should have got a transfer quarterback but you know across the board you know the cupboard is a bit bare from last year's championship team we've mentioned the offensive line several times uh it's it's a it's a reset across the board um so you can't he he didn't have the keys to a Ferrari like he had when he was taking over for Jim Harbaugh this is like a you know used 2008 Honda Civic so you know you can only do the best with what you can with with with what you have um and yeah this was an unfortunate loss but Texas is I mean that's that's one of the best teams in the country um I don't know there there there's still a lot more to be seen as uh the Wolverines progress here okay uh gun to your head Bobby one question you can only pick one of these two sides was the result of this game in the fashion that it happened was that more about how good Texas is or was that more about the limitations Michigan has this season Michigan limitations honestly I I think Texas was good don't get me wrong but I I feel like run this back with last year's Michigan team it's a way different ball game yeah I think that's a fair answer all right uh there you have it folks we will be back Bobby and
