North Carolina vs. UNC-Charlotte Game Preview and Prediction - College Football Week 2

welcome back sleepers football preview and recap series it is your favorite sleepers resident UNC fans Jacob carabis and Riley Davis here to preview a not as exciting week one not as exciting as the week one matchup UNC Chapel Hill versus UNCC Charlotte not really a a a barn burner here um kind of hard to get excited for it but at the end of the day we should be seeing UNCC improve to 2 and 0 so Riley quick thoughts here yeah like you said shouldn't be much of a contest not as entertaining from a matchup perspective however I'm hopeful that we'll see maybe a little more offense in week two this is the type of game I mean James Madison just put 30 points on Charlotte you want to see Connor Harold start to look a little bit more comfortable start to look like someone who I know he wasn't a big time recruit but had a little bit of pedigree coming out of high school maybe shows off the athleticism more and and gets more comfortable going against a team that's clearly going to be overmatched this is what you this is kind of what this game is here for um the the coaching staff had a week to prepare for Harold as the Undisputed starter hopefully they take advantage of his legs would love to see a little more involvement from the tight ends maybe take a couple shots downfield yeah that that's what I'm looking for like how can the offense look against a team it's clearly better than uh what adjustments are made with with Harold as the the go-to guy and then we'll get into it a little bit more but of course there's some some like onfield storylines that are sort of off the field too just with the the history of some of these Charlotte players and coaches but yeah that's all what I'm looking forward to yeah I mean I think it's I said this on the recap I think chip Lindsay and Connor Harold were put into an unfortunate situation last week a little bit like the prep the play calling everything was clearly for Max Johnson I mean I know Matt came out and said it was going to be a two quarterback thing but I think it was pretty evident that it wasn't going to be up until he got hurt so extra rest time since they played on Thursday get a couple extra days that's always nice um the offense should look way better I mean the beauty here is you get three quote unquote buy games in a row for Harold to kind of get settled in get locked in I I think this is really just these are confidence Builders like this is literally get Herold some easy completions yes Omarion is probably inevitably going to score like five to six touchdowns in this stretch but this just has to be about easy completions Harold's confidence get nesbit's confidence back up get get pce hour involved assuming that his health is is there um continue to get JJ involved like it's just all continue to get McCullum involved like it's just all confidence building at this point and I mean this is a great spot to do that like going one and0 against the power five Big 10 team in their house this is the reward like the reward is you get three three weeks in a row of figuring yourself out before you get into conference play and you have to go 30 minutes down the road to Durham so I'm I'm pretty excited to see what they do differently how things look how they use Harold's legs throwing in some of these read options you know I think there's a lot of avenues they can take here I mean I'm not going to make any judgment on Harold yet uh the only real full game we've seen him play was the bowl game and it it just we didn't care about that game it was pretty obvious yeah even that I mean there's so many guys missing it was tough to put much stock into that this will truly be his I mean his first chance to make a statement which hopefully he capitalizes on I mean he has to be the guy if you like there's really no other choice and again you just want to comfort is the word I keep going back to um because you just want to see him get better like better chemistry with any number of these receivers we want to see maybe this is the week where we see the Nate McCollum who showed up against Minnesota last year and had like 14 catches and then was essentially never heard from again like we've seen we've seen mcum D against Power for competition he should be able to sort of emerge as that as a role as one of the maybe the best receiver I'm not going to say best pass catcher I still give that title to to nzb but he has a chance and this is when you want to start to see some of that emerge yeah 100% agree like you know I I don't even think discussing the defense is necessary because you would assume that a defense who just did what they did against Minnesota is probably going to absolutely dominate the line of scrimmage against a team like UNCC um you know we'll see like like we said the in the recap for Minnesota like defense looked good in week one against South Carolina last year these three games aren't going to tell us much about the defense we really won't know until conference play but you know I I'm pretty confident in their ability in these next three for sure um you kind of you kind of foreshadowed this earlier but outside of this being a pretty boring matchup when you just look at it on paper there are some uh some UNC connections going on here if you will Riley uh inform the audience here about these connections first you have Tim Brewster Dre blle and Tim cross on Biff poi's staff it's funny we've already talked about not not gonna keep rehashing the whole like let's see what the offense can do let's see who steps up however UNC fans got to be dying to see a quarterback go against a Dre blight coach secondary after after a couple I know he's a Carolina Legend that's not meant any shot at him but after how many years has he been on staff with Mac was it four years of just seeing it felt like defensive backs were always in the wrong position it seemed like they were always a step slow it seemed like they never turned their head around uh to make a play on the ball when it was coming toward them plenty of times guys made business decisions and avoided tackles and physicality now it's it's our guys time to see if they'll step up and eat a little bit same thing with Tim cross who was the maligned defensive line coach and again it's it's tough to discern where exact ly what's the root of these issues where we'll find well I shouldn't say we'll find out because it's still like Carolina has more Talent it should win regardless but it could provide a little bit of insight to see who was the real issue of the defense the past few years is this does this go higher up Beyond Jean chisik does it go to the top to Mack was it the these coaches in their shortcomings um they got a couple familiar faces as well like jakus Conley he didn't play last week but uh one time had a ton of Promise as a safety I was so excited for him thought he was going to really I mean end up in the NFL uh Dante Balor is another one Justin Olsen remember him the wide receiver feels like he's been in college for forever all those dudes are playing at Charlotte now um so yeah should be interesting to to see how that shakes out yeah it's gonna be it's gonna be a treat man listen if Dre blah was getting torched against ACCC competition with four and five star Corners I could only imagine it's probably going to be more of the same with the the level of recruit that UNCC is getting um I I don't know man there's there's genuinely just no excuse for this not to be an absolute route that's just all it comes down to that being said score prediction and best bet what do you got here I mean Carolina's only favored by 22 to where we're talking about how it shouldn't be a contest but then again let's let's do the I'll do the contrarian side Carolina threw for 105 yards in the opening week and they went downfield once and it was that triple option pass to I think it was JJ Jones from Conor Harrell um that being said I keep going back to James Madison team that basically lost everyone wasn't even a contest for UNC Charlotte that UNC should be able to to match should cover um I don't know is there any prop bets you like I'm not haven't really T taken a peak I haven't really taken a peek at that so unfortunately because this is such a crappy matchup they haven't updated a lot of individual prop yets but I do have two that I definitely am going to sprinkle in no matter what the odds are the first one Omari on Hampton to score twice I'm sure it'll be like plus 300 or something like that but he didn't score last week even though he was the offense he was the Workhorse but it was just tough like he didn't really have any opportunities and the one time he did Max Johnson made a great play scrambled scored a rushing touchdown so I like Omarion to score twice here kind of like a he's going to run it down their throats and it's going to be a 28 to7 game early he punches two in I like that I also like I I don't know what the odds will be here either they will be plus odds don't know what they will be but Conor Herold anytime touchdown and I go back to like the Campbell game that he played in last year where it was like a similar roster structure not a very good roster and he had like two carries for 60 yards and a touchdown I think we could see a little bit more of that as well so either of those prop bets I absolutely love and what's your what would be your final score prediction oh man um at home against UNCC they only scored seven against the James Madison team that you mentioned lost everybody I think people are kind of still caught up on like the name of James Madison from last year completely different roster I promise you they shouldn't be able to score they might score in the fourth quarter when our scrubs are in I'm going to say like 41 to7 you're still more optimistic than I am I I need to see Conor Harold shine as a passer a little bit before I say 40 I'll go I go 31 to10 that's fair I believe I want to believe into this defense I want to believe that Javari ritzy is finally having that breakout year um that Carolina fans have expected but it wouldn't be the first time a a G5 team um kind of gave Carolina fits and made its offense look a little bit fraudulent I go back to you can pick app state two years ago you could go Georgia state two years ago uh you go to fam uh Florida A&M two years ago an FCS team that gave Carolina some fits on defense I just need to see it sustained a little bit before I'm ready to say they'll hold them to just a touchdown I I'll give Charlotte a field goal on top of that that's fair I'm trusting in uh Jeff Collins Ministry to minister some serious Mayhem against a team like UNCC but yeah I mean I say 41 just because I genuinely think that they're not going to be able to stop am Marion like if Minnesota couldn't there's no way UNCC can but all in all like terrible matchup nothing too exciting but it's exciting for us because we get to watch UNC play football again and hopefully we'll be back later in the week to recap a dominant UNCC win if not the energy levels could be way off here we'll see see you guys next time
