Kentucky vs. South Carolina Game Recap - College Football Week 2

Dion I think a direct quote from our preview uh as I was pitching you on South Carolina was uh so the cell is the quarterback was nervous and they have two good defensive linemen and they're going to win because of that well South Carolina 31 Kentucky six uh and the game was never really in doubt either South Carolina straight up whipped Kentucky up front to the point where Kentucky basically gave passing the ball they went 18 straight run plays at one point it's also shown by the fact that starting quarterback Brock Vander Griff had one total yard in the game he was three of 10 for 30 yards passing had nine carries for negative 29 rushing yards one total yard for ky's quarterback in this game as South Carolina dominated from start to finish really um I'm a South Carolina Lum Rock in the Marcus lore Jersey this is as excited of a of a win I've been after a win as I've been in a decade because I I was talking to some South Carina people the last time I think South Carolina physically whipped somebody and dominated a game like this in the trenches was when like dve Clowny Marcus uh Melvin Ingram were in school and now for it to to to happen now like this team is still young still raw but I think has a lot of upside what did you see in this game not much um I watch the game I I just thought Kentucky just lost it um Vander Griff is exactly who I said he was he's not it man he's not it he's not it I I think this definitely isn't a direct quote by the way we're recording this during the Colorado game I mean talk about another QB who's ex tune in that recap um but I this isn't a direct quote but I I think I I said on uh the the first Kentucky preview um why wasn't he playing at uh Georgia at some point right like if he was a festar QB and trust me I get it Carson Beck good quarterback potential number one pick like not trying to take anything away from him but at a certain point like there's portal QBs like cam Ward who prove themselves and it's like okay well I'm bigger than Washington State so I got to go and then there's a port of QB like Vandergriff where it's like I get it um I still think Kentucky did the right thing by getting him you take the flyer on him because you've never really seen what he did but um some of the questions behind him we sure as hell got the answers today so uh just bad quarterback um I thought Lenoris sers um when he went out the game uh that's when I I thought South Carol Carolina kind of took it over when he came back in the game I thought they they tried to hand it right back but Vander Griff said no we don't want it anymore and then it it was just it was a beat down in the second half it it was a genuine beat down in the second half yeah the seller situation was interesting for South Carina because he was rolling he was completing passes that he did not complete in the opener like he looked comfortable back there then he goes out for about a quarter to check on a hip injury fine comes back in the game his first drive back is essentially the two-minute drill and they're just having him throw the ball you know 20 yards downfield trying to make a drive which is fine you understand that but he's been out of rhythm now and I think Force things like the the interception he threw was high like I just don't think he was quite ready to be gunning it that way back second settles down like final s in this game 11 of 15 for 159 yards two touchdowns and that pick we we talked about how he was basically a runner with an arm that you didn't know was going to land he looked a lot more like a quarterback today now there were a couple times he was like oblivious to the rush absolutely oblivious to the rush and fumbled like three times South I think recovered all of those um but I I like the step there to your point with Kentucky like Vander Griff was bad but Gavin whims it wasn't good either he was 3-7 for 14 yards and another pick coming on in relief for Kentucky if you're Kentucky your defense is is Feist I think is good against the the run but you now are seeing that your quarterback is is just another guy he's nothing special your running backs are solid but you don't have anybody explosive and there's no receiver who can consistently get open and be like a legitimate playmaker on the outside so offensively I don't know where Kentucky goes from this like I think you kind of have to re-calibrate how we view the rest of Kentucky season because the ceiling of um trying to finish in even the top half of the league and try and crack like the second tier of the SEC that's long gone like I think now it's team that might be fighting for a bull bit yeah I mean I think they both are uh to be completely honest I mean like but we came into this game thinking more of Kentucky than we did of South Carolina sure like South car make a b game had to have this win and got it obviously South Carolina goes from a team that like probably won't make a bowl to now they're fighting for a bowl game Kentucky goes from a team that like they should Coast to one to now they're fighting um but yeah I mean I mean you said Gavin whims at 37 14 yards and a pick uh to be quite Frank that is better than uh Brock Vander I mean just because it wasn't good doesn't mean it wasn't better than Vander like it it was still better um and he looked a little Electric in the Run game six carries 44 yards like um I think he opened them up a little bit um I mean ultimately uh I thought the game was over uh when sers threw the pick and they settled for a field goal um that was the moment where it's like okay if Kentucky goes and gets seven they can step on their throat now in the second half but instead they got three and then it was kind of like oh well like we're South Carolina goes into halftime still believing a little bit um they didn't really put them away uh are you concerned um uh with the goggles that sellers wears I am not concerned although I did have the thought legitimately about two minutes ago during recording maybe that's why he didn't see anybody coming at him from the side also uh that was a terrible call by that ref but um also just just uh just so you know you you said last week uh or on our recap or the preview excuse me prw um and you know not quite a direct quote but pretty pretty direct you said that um you know he was nervous so he air mailed a lot of passes last week he just does that there's no nerves like he he just he just air mails a lot of passes that's just he aired everything week one though he aired and that was still I think some bad habits there but 11 of 15 passing for him is is is a a major step up didn't really have to use his legs I thought the game was over so throws the pick gets field goals 10- six still some kind of nervous hours I think because you didn't know if sers are going to settle back into the game the way he did the first half first drive of the game southa pun or first drive second half excuse me South Cara punts Kentucky gets it back goes 12 yards back in three plays and punts it right back at that point I think it was it was clear to me and I think it was clear to Kentucky that they were not moving the ball they were not going to move the ball again South Carolina and then South Carolina goes down in scores at that point to me it was it was ball game it you know so like honestly like there was two points in the game where I thought it was over and you know I watched the second half uh because we were obviously we're doing the recap we wouldn't be informed but like I wasn't watching the second half and assuming Kentucky had a shot um even after the punt the they their first field goal Drive they did not throw a single pass and it was third and five and they ran the ball and my first instinct was is Vandergriff hurt like is some is something wrong and then you know they kick the field goal very next Drive is a pick I'm like well even though that last drive like that was a joke I don't know who called those plays but that was a clown show of a drive like South Carolina doesn't want to win this game as much as Kentucky doesn't want to win this game at the moment so maybe they can fix it and then again like they didn't throw a pass yeah um and like isn't that the whole point of bringing this kid in like did you not like at some point this offseason did we not realize that like hey maybe he stinks oh there I I do think there is a difference when live bullets are flying against equal talented teams I think we I think you can still say that Kentucky should be better than South Carolina on the season there fair to question whether that's going to happen but I I still think it's fair to say that like Kentucky should be better but it's only because South Carolina's Talent is Young right like I I think South Carolina is top half of the SEC in terms of talent it's probably you know more towards the middle but I would put them at eight or seven as opposed to like 10 or 11 with the young talent that this team has they're at least able to challenge Kentucky and make them work for what they need him and be on their game right it's very real that van Griff could be awesome in practice he did pretty well in their open right against a much lesser opponent comes into this game and looks like he hasn't played quarterback before in his life yeah he stinks yeah and like like that's a it's a different thing when when you see quarterbacks who struggle in power conferences transfer down to lower levels G5 and suddenly play pretty well right just some guys can't handle this level now not many guys could handle what the pressure soft CL was getting because we we talked about Kyle Canard and Dylan seart in the preview might be the best offensive and duo in the in the SEC in the entire sec I'm willing to entertain that thought now very few quarterbacks going to be successful going against that every time at the same time he looked he looked shocked he looked shocked is he the quarterback for Kentucky moving forward no um no you think you think they make you think they make the switch Yeah so their next four games um because when you mentioned that Kentucky should be better than South Carolina I was curious what the schedule looks like for both teams because obviously like talent wise like I definitely see where you're coming from but like in the SEC yeah it the schedule's crazy yeah oh yeah their next four games are Georgia Ohio Old Miss Vanderbilt they're losing three of those um and I don't know necessarily if they beat Ohio I think they obviously they should but with the way Vandergriff played today I don't know if they can I I don't you start him against Georgia because um I'm sure they paid him nil money right like even if it's not the cam Ward bag or the uh will Howard bag like he got some money from some booster that is expecting him to play next week I don't think he plays against Ohio I don't think he plays against old myth I don't think he plays against Ville I think I think Georgia is when it ends um you know I said the same thing about Michigan right if the whole idea behind playing one quarterback instead of the other is the one you're playing can throw and the other one just a runner well when the one that can't throw can't throw why not just play the runner if if it's GNA be incomplete at least have there be a threat of him doing something else yeah I I I think stups has to make the switch it'll probably honestly be halftime of the Georgia game considering vandagriff came from Georgia I think you put him out there and give him that chance and then inevitably you're going to make the switch because you're going to be down to Georgia South Carolina has LSU coming to Columbia up next I think the next stretch for South Carolina is very interesting you have LSU then you have acan then you have ol miss and miss starts a stretch of Miss Oklahoma Alabama like that's that's a lot this is an LSU team that as we're recording this um they've they've poured it on now in the third quarter but struggling with Nichols and could be a hangover effect from the USC game and playing in Vegas and doing all that stuff but LSU with a a leaky secondary going to Williams Bryce against a South Carina team that I think has some belief now yeah L is gonna be favored probably favored by about what Kentucky was in this game I you know somewhere between the seven and nine range I think that game got a lot more interesting to me yeah I don't I don't I'm hopeful I am hopeful South Carolina hopeful that's not even a shot of South Carolina like what I said L LSU should be so much I'm I'm I'm looking at it this way right LSU's running backs have not been Stellar if South cona pressures nus Meer the same way that they pressured Vander Griff in this game I think that opens the door for a couple of turnovers that could potentially change things I I I just I mean I watched uh LSU USC obviously um and then I watched a little bit of this Nichols game um in my opinion nus Meyer is like top three quarterback in the country I I think he's awesome what happened against LSU or excuse me what happened against USC was just like sometimes it's not your day like I I think I think if LSU and USC play 10 times I genuinely think that LSU team was better than USC by like multiple touch Downs um more often than not and I I bet usfc money line so like I was a very happy camper but the whole game I was like Wow am I lucky like as a better to be in this like this should be a blowout and I I just think I mean even when you look at this next game like the kid is very accurate he gets through his reads he's a prole type quarterback in my opinion I don't know if I see him playing pro ball um just because he lacked some of the athleticism but like up here I think he had has a lot of that and um I mean sers is going to give you a couple yeah he is he is I I I think Kentucky wishes they had a quarterback like nus Meer I think most most colleges do um things don't get any easier though from Kentucky as mentioned Georgia up next Mark sup has to find some answers and find some answers pretty
