Oklahoma vs. Houston Game Recap - College Football Week 2

hello again it's Max and Bobby with another recap of Oklahoma this time uh it's Houston who held him to a close game uh in week two uh this game was pretty interesting because if you watched our preview um these two teams were coming from completely different places U had just dominated Temple and and Houston got dominated by UNLV and we saw this Clash we said Houston might come out with a little bit you know more focused more ready to play you know it's hard for teams that are good and well coached to get embarrassed um two weeks in a row and so Houston had held up um they're under the bargain U um not a lot of offense but let's get into that Bobby like you were there what did you see from the Sooners what happened uh I mean it was it was atrocious I'm I'm going to I'm I'm GNA level with you um this was one of the worst offensive performances I've ever seen um in Oklahoma offense put out this was abysmal um and there have to be some conversations going on just in general about the ceiling of this team the defense did their did their job without them we U should have lost this game in fact Brent vbl after the game said that the sooner should have lost and I fully agree with him this was putrid disastrous the play calling was bad Jackson Arnold was bad the it just I my brain is still kind of broken from last night um just how it how it went uh Gavin Sauk uh not good at all you know running the ball uh give Taylor Tatum some more uh burn because he was great but he only had one carry um I just I I don't know where to start um Seth latrell's offense is is not appealing whatsoever um the receivers we have we have an issue there you know just in general outside of Dion Burks who got hurt by the way it's a it's a black hole it's there there's just the names just are not are not there with all due respect to Zion Reagan CD lamb no we maxw we used to have it all like this is this is the definition of like be careful what you wish for when when you're sitting there watching OU Texas Tech 50 to 60 to 50 blah blah blah no one can stop anyone you're like I just want a defense this is what happens because you stuck with 16 to 12 and just it was so bad Max I I I'm glad that I I just it was so painful and U fans who are already kind of nervous about the SEC play coming are this is are slamming the pan button and I think rightfully so this was really brutal well you mentioned a few different factors quarterback play play calling um Talent or lack thereof on the perimeter what which of those things do you think is the most fixable moving forward like I I also would be remiss to mention the biggest issue of all which is the offensive line and and if you're watching this by the way you're slaming that too what's most fixable um I feel like there's more help coming on the receiving end Nick Anderson hasn't been healthy hasn't hasn't played yet uh same with andrel Anthony um so getting those guys healthy getting them back in the rotation that that will help um offensive line has not been healthy um and you know the center position specifically Branson Hickman um being injured like that that kills that uh especially when the offense Is So based off the inside Zone um so really like the biggest thing you can do what the most fixable units receiving by the way um they you just have to help Hope for everyone to heal up and get healthy and stay healthy once you hit conference play um because this the unit as is these units just will not work the offensive unit is not working right now um so I would say I would say receiving will get a boost down the line but it's just it's just really bad right now yeah um and looking at some of the just overall team stats one of the thing that one of the things that stands out to me excuse me is Houston dominating time of possession they had the ball for 35 minutes you Oklahoma only had the ball for 24 or about 25 minutes um a little under 25 minutes um in the game so Houston kind of was able to stay on the field Houston also had more yards 318 to 249 um we just talked about in USC Utah State how you know gave credit to USC's defense for holding Utah State to 190 yards 249 a't ain't much better um and credit to Utah I mean Houston's defense excuse me for being being able to hold um a team to two 249 yards especially Oklahoma but that's not necessarily what you want to you know see if you're a sis fan I'm sure um and uh yeah Houston was able to get more first downs um total plays though interesting so Houston had the ball for longer but um total plays were almost the same Houston ran 63 Oklahoma ran 61 so um that's that's pretty interesting to me but uh on the Houston side of things Donovan Smith had a better game than he did against you LV that's definitely encouraging if you're a cougars fan um he played really well kept kept them in the game made some nice throws um when it when it counted and uh but if if you're Oklahoma like holding a team holding a team to 12 points like still a great defensive every effort but I think you know they got to figure out what to do uh you we talked about the play call like what's and and I haven't had a chance you know just being honest I haven't had a chance to watch a full Oklahoma game yet I've just seen you know highlights him and reading you know stuff just in preparation for these conversations Bobby but like what about the play calling is now working um what specifically Seth Latrell is not doing a very good job of getting Jackson Arnold in makeable third down positions um it's very lateral it's not it just it's it's just really really not good too many jet sweeps it's um it's choppy I I I think is the best way to put it it's uh I I'm just trying to put it into words it's um it's it's just it's really lateral it's really short but not just just not good it's I I I know I'm I'm sounding like a [ __ ] here not being able to use my word words but it's it's it's it's really just it's bad I'm sorry um I I feel like it's it's really it's bad that it's making me miss Jeff leby honestly um but you know I I think some of that's Jackson Arnold under thrwing things you know any deep shots just have not worked at all um I feel like it lacks creativity um much like this uh description of uh how bad his offense is but um it's just it's it's really it's really really dull yeah and I think um that's that sometimes I think you know hopefully you'd like to see more variation moving forward uh maybe more reps more work uh down the down the line would help getting Talent back on the receiving end would should help um what you're going to do about the running game what what what are you guys G to do about that because it's you're not GNA face opponents that if you I mean if you can can't get like you're you're you know Javonte Barnes Jack well yeah Jackson Arnold's your second leading rusher with 28 yards your your starter had 40 yards on 12 carries like and it's Houston like how do you fix that by the time you face like these tough for SEC defenses I mean it's just thinking of this unit going against the the Tennessee defensive line scares the hell out of you um because it's it's I think primarily on the offensive Line's end um but also Gavin Sauk has completely disappeared what um like much like he did last year uh to start the season um it's got the the line just has to the line has to figure itself out open up the uh inside Zone a little bit and you know honestly come up with schemes that aren't inside Zone you know because just ramming them right into the middle right into the nose tackle is not going to work stop doing that please um so I mean I I I think a lot of it's you know a little bit more creativity on the in the running game um because or just you know get everyone healthy because inside Zone unlocks everything so we'll see how it goes all right well there you have it Oklahoma looking to they got they're two and 0 I mean that's a good thing you you didn't lose the game you you were able to um you know you you avoided playing bad and losing which is always good you're gonna be able to at least go into next week against Tain try to figure some things out before you face Tennessee and even that game you have it home so uh first four games I think when we look back and even after the Opera game and we go into the body we can figure out and talk about where Oklahoma's at I think it'll be interesting to see the progression from week to week and again like also so speaking of week to week like so weird like I mean we're talking about how well they performed against Temple put put up 50 points you know did it seemingly did everything right and of course we know it's Temple Houston is better but you know not by a wide margin but you know still a pretty good team and we're like oh my God this offense is horrible they only put up 16 points but you know two lane should be interesting um before you get in an SEC play and um that's that's I think I think right now I'll say it the same thing I said last week I think you can um definitely hang your hat on your defense and be you know glad for that but I think um it remains to be seen what this team actually is especially after a performance like this and you know I'm excited you know for the next couple weeks to see like kind of what unfolds for the cers yeah next week you know I I think entering this season not a lot of people and we're not we're obviously going to preview to Lane um that looked that that did not not look like much of a t test or a challenge but you know the Green Wave narrow almost beat Kansas State yesterday uh so that'll be a very very big final challenge before SEC play so excited to talk about that um and look if you're a sooner fan you got
